Life and Lifetime remain ‘UnREAL’ for series stars in Season 2

Shiri Appleby stars in the Season 2 premiere of “UnREAL” Monday on Lifetime. By Jay Bobbin For two familiar television faces, what’s happened with their current series since its debut last summer seems unreal. A Peabody Award, an American Film Institute Award and – for Constance Zimmer – a Critics’ Choice Award weren’t in her mind, nor fellow star Shiri Appleby’s, when they started their roles as producers of a fictional dating show on the Lifetime drama ‘’UnREAL.“ That’s what happened, though, and it’s given the actresses extra energy and enthusiasm for the show’s second season that begins Monday, June 6. “I’m still so pleasantly surprised at how it has affected so many people from so many different walks of life,” says Zimmer, who got added confirmation when she attended the recent White House Correspondents’ Dinner. “Especially when you’re in D.C., you think they’re only going to want to focus on political shows, so I was superexcited to talk to people about ‘UnREAL’ there.” Named best supporting actress in a drama series at January’s Critics’ Choice honors, “Entourage” and “House of Cards” veteran Zimmer (also seen last season on ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) returns as Quinn King, the tough-minded executive producer of “Everlasting” – the reality show within the show – with “Roswell” and “Life Unexpected” alum Appleby (who recurred on CBS’ “Code Black”) back as emotionally invested producer Rachel Goldberg. “You want to live up to what you achieved the first time around,” notes Appleby, who also takes a turn behind the cameras as director of the sixth new “UnREAL” episode. “When we made the first season, there were no expectations of us. Nobody paid any attention to us, but I definitely feel the pressure this year ... not that it’s coming from anyone other than myself.” Much of the first-year drama of “UnREAL,” created by executive producers Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, hinged on the arc of Rachel as she wrestled with her loyalties and values. Appleby says her alter ego is still on “an emotional roller coaster, for sure, but it’s really a season about watching her be a survivor – how she gets knocked down and picks herself back up and, as

Pictured: Shiri Appleby

things really start to fall apart, how she holds on to some semblance of control of her life. “Rachel and Quinn are really at odds,” adds Appleby. “They start out on the same team, but circumstances pull them apart. Rachel is really standing up to Quinn and saying, ‘I am my own person. I don’t need you. I can do these things on my own.’ She starts to see that she’s not successful because of Quinn, she’s successful because of who she is.” While some Season 2 challenges faced by the “UnREAL” characters are familiar, others are new, the latter generated in part by the fact that “Everlasting” has its first African American bachelor, played by B.J. Britt (and channeling, directly or indirectly, concerns about diversity that some followers of ABC’s “Bachelor” franchise have voiced). Whether the effect will be as big as the one Season 1 had, the cast and crew surely have reason to hope for that now. “Good reviews are one thing, but winning awards for making groundbreaking television has sent us into the wildest-dream category,” Zimmer reflects while admitting her interest in watching actual reality shows is the same as when “UnREAL” began. “I prefer coming at it from the perspective that ‘Everlasting’ is the only show I know, as far as playing Quinn goes. It hasn’t drawn me to (the genre) any less or any more than I was drawn to it before.” The ethnic aspect of “UnREAL’s” new round shows the series still takes its own approach while acknowledging what’s happening – or not – with the actual unscripted programs it mirrors. “It’s kind of comical that it even needs to be a conversation,” Zimmer reasons. “but I think it’s why the producers and writers felt so strongly about making that a choice for our second season. We should be the show that’s shining a light on (related) issues that shouldn’t be issues.”

CELEBRITY John Crook’s Q&A

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of ‘Game of Thrones’ Sunday on HBO

A great deal of “Game of Thrones” is about politics. Do you follow news about world politics yourself these days? Yes, in fact, I follow your politics every day, because they have a lot of consequences to us (here in Denmark). I remember in 1979, my mom took me to a demonstration against nuclear warheads in Germany. This was a kind of small, local thing and I don’t know how much if any coverage it got in America. But when one of your presidential candidates said recently that he couldn’t make any promises about whether he would use nuclear weapons, it felt like a terrifying throwback to a time we don’t ever want to go back to. The very idea that anyone would even bring that into the conversation is just very scary. A lot of us fondly remember your shortlived 2008 Fox fantasy series “New Amsterdam.” Did you enjoy working on it? I loved it, too. First of all, I love history, so (it’s great) if I can do anything where you can bring in history, particularly with New York, which is such a crazy city with such a rich history. Every week you’d go back in time and I saw places in New York that I never imagined existed. It was just so much fun, but that’s just the nature of this business. We had OK ratings. In fact, if we had the ratings today that we had back then, we’d be the biggest thing on network TV, but things have changed. It was a fun show to do. Would you ever be interested in working on another U.S.-based TV series? Yes. There are so many great TV shows happening right now. I am actually in the process finally of getting a green card, so it’s definitely on my mind.... There’s a lot of crazy things in your country, but I love it every time I go there. I would love to spend more time there.

CELEBRITY Jay Bobbin’s Q&A

MichaelaWatkins of ‘Casual’ Tuesday on Hulu As “Casual” begins its second season Tuesday (June 7), what is the status of your character Valerie’s relationship with Alex played by Tommy Dewey), the brother she now lives with? We have a dysfunctional family, and our closeness – our casual closeness, the way we are with each other – it’s such an intimate brother/sister relationship, the likes I’ve seen of friends, and it’s always been so interesting to me to explore that kind of relationship with a sibling. We don’t come from good role models in any way, shape, or form (as the characters), and so like a lot of siblings, I went this way and he went that way. I’ve been fighting for control of my life, or of something, and can’t get it. And conversely for him, he’s been seemingly OK with that. What I love about the show is, our arcs go like that because of our relationship with each other, because of what he teaches me and because of what I bring to his world by now being in his immediate life, living with him. What would you say about the relationship Valerie has with her daughter, Laura (played by Tara Lynne Barr)? With these two, it’s hard. (They’re) at a point where now they have to navigate: “OK. I’m still your mother. You’re still going to make crappy decisions, but we’re friends. I have to pull rank on you, and I also need you. I mean, you’re my primary partner also.” So, it holds all those things.

Do you like Hulu being the outlet for “Casual”? What’s crazy – in this sort of golden age that we’re in with television – is that things I like, the audiences find. I think that digital platforms like this are perfect, where the audiences that will dig (a show) can find it and support it. These more niche-type shows, which are the ones that I personally really find fulfilling, have more opportunity for actors like me, I guess, who are sort of not super-mainstream. CELEBRITY George Dickie’s Q&A

B rya n Cranston of ‘All the Way’ Sunday on HBO How much do you think LBJ wanted to be president?

Oh, he desperately wanted to be president. He definitely wanted to be and the rookie senator from Massachusetts cleaned his clock in some of the early primaries and he saw the writing on the wall. He realized that he can’t compete with this golden boy with the beautiful wife, the model wife, and it was too perfect. So that’s why he accepted the vice presidency because he knew that it’s better to get on board, do what I can ... for eight years and then get the endorsement from this golden boy and then become president. That was his thought patterns, I believe, behind it. So if he plays the good soldier behind Kennedy, he’s going to get the endorsement. And if he gets the endorsement, he’s in.

How was driving the Amphicar in “All the Way”?

It was so much fun. One of the great things about going from stage to film is that you have to open it up and that was one of the things I was really looking forward to and I lobbied for that. I didn’t have to lobby hard because they knew they wanted that image. And it’s true, it’s true. He did do that. He did often take people out and pretend that he couldn’t find the brakes and go right into the water. It was much more fun than just saying, “Hey, this is an amphibious car. I’m gonna take it in the water.” So what we showed with (Hubert) Humphrey was exactly what he did.

FOOD George Dickie’s What's for Dinner

Just like regular folks, c e l e b s are taking to the grape Ask any wine lover what got them into wine and you’ll likely get an interesting answer – and probably an interesting story to go along with it. Celebrity oenophiles are no different. They got started any number of ways – through a family member, in college or maybe from dinners with wine-loving friends. For Kathie Lee Gifford, co-host of the third hour of NBC’s “Today,” wine calls to mind happy times with family while growing up in Europe and Maryland. Today, it’s a source of income and fun for her as an owner of Gifft wines. “You know what they do in Europe – and people get crazy about it here,” Gifford says. “My parents never said, ‘What would you like, merlot tonight?’ No, they’d let me have a little, teeny sip and they’d put it on their finger. Or when we lived in Germany, my daddy would let us have a tiny, little sip of his beer – suds. And I equate such lovely, wonderful memories with being a happy family. Nobody was ever drunk but we were celebrating all the time.

And a good friend of mine in the business who was handling our PR at the time was into wine, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about doing your own wine?’ And he kind of talked me into doing it and so we’ve been doing it since 2003-2004 and have enjoyed.” For Gordon, blends are where it’s at.

“I like a really good blend with a cabernet sauvignon base and maybe a little merlot/syrah blend in there,” he says. “But some of the best wines in the world are blends even though we don’t always know it and they don’t always say that on the bottle, even some of the top bourdeaus. Rebecca Wisocky Last August’s Season 3 finale of “Devious Maids” ended on a literally explosive note, when the mansion of Adrian and Evelyn Powell (Tom Irwin, Rebecca Wisocky) turned into a fireball, just moments after Adrian had rushed back inside.

As the hit Lifetime series returns for Season 4 on Monday, June 6, the characters are dealing with the aftermath of that horrible incident, and the oncehaughty Evelyn struggles literally to put the fragments of her once-privileged life back together, Wisocky explains. “It’s a great metaphor, because their world as (the Powells) that we have come to know blows up,” she says. “Whether or not Adrian Powell survives, he will be a large presence moving forward. Because the world explodes for Evelyn she is untethered. She is left utterly without the things that once defined her, so that’s a brand-new journey that you will see her go on. “Evelyn is forced to redefine who she is and, in true Evelyn fashion, she makes a lot of missteps along the way. You’ll see her in some situations that you would never have expected. She spends a night in jail, and she gets taken to church in many forms.” The actress says she fell in love with theater as a shy child, when her mother enrolled her in the kind of summer community arts program for which Wisocky remains a tireless advocate to this day. “I got over my shyness enough to try (doing a play), and I was hooked,” she says. “Theater was my team sport growing up. Soon I was pretty focused on trying to have some sort of life in the arts and I’ve been very lucky with that. It’s a source of great pleasure and curiosity to be able to find ways to empathize with creatures that have nothing to do with my own life. ... We all hope to find our own personal band of freaks along the way, and I found mine in theater.”

STORY

Two guys with baggage open a restaurant in AMC’s ‘Feed the Beast’ David Schwimmer stars in “Feed the Beast,” premiering Sunday on AMC By George Dickie Dion Patras’ life is a mess. The product of a painful childhood, this Bronx boy and talented chef played by Jim Sturgess (“21,” “Cloud Atlas”) has just been released from prison for arson, a charge he earned when he burned down the uninsured restaurant owned by his boss, brutal mobster Patrick Woichik, aka the Tooth Fairy (Michael Gladis, “Mad Men”). And now he owes the thug big time. On top of that, the jobless Dion can’t pay his bills and he has a deep and abiding love of cocaine. Before he went away, Dion was co-workers at the Woichik eatery with his best friend, Tommy Moran (David Schwimmer, “Friends,” “Band of Brothers”), a sommelier with a drinking problem, who has been unable to stop mourning his wife since she was killed in a hit-and-run accident years earlier. What keeps him going – barely – is caring for their young son, who hasn’t spoken since her death. Both men clearly have baggage, and in the new AMC drama series “Feed the Beast,” premiering Sunday, June 5, opening their own high-end restaurant appears to be their salvation. But can these two damaged souls make a go of it? “It’s a dream that they’ve had forever,” Sturgess explains. “It was always a dream with Tommy and his late wife, Rie. The three made plans. It was the reason to keep living. Like any dream is, it’s a powerful thing. And I think Dion sees an opportunity and sees that Tommy needs some injection of life, something to care about, something to kind of drive him forward, something to kind of get him

out of his slump. And at the same time, he sees it as an opportunity to get out of his own s... like the problems he’s created by getting in trouble with the mob. So yeah, it becomes a very necessary thing in both of their lives for different reasons.” Sturgess, a 38-year-old Brit who’s been primarily a movie actor throughout his career, had been reluctant in the past to take on a series and commit to one character for possibly years. But the script and the chance to live in Dion’s skin and world proved too enticing. “I love Dion. I think he’s a great character,” Sturgess says. “He’s really fun to play and I like who he is and I love the world of cooking and I’m enjoying learning to cook and spending time in kitchens with chefs and I’m learning a bunch of things and that’s really exciting. “Growing up in the U.K., we fantasized about New York mobs and gangs and we all watched ‘Goodfellas,’ ” he continues. “New York is a really special place for me and I was always completely kind of seduced by the romance of all the music that came out of New York and all the hip-hop music and all the movies I would watch and books that I would read. So for me ... it sort of blended so many of the things that I love in one show and so there was no way I could say no, really.”

‘O.J.: Made in America’ weaves a tale of race and celebrity

The five-part “30 for 30” documentary “O.J.: Made in America” premieres Saturday on ABC By George Dickie The O.J. Simpson murder trial was a story that resonated with just about anyone who lived through it and one that probably best defined American culture in the 1990s. Handsome, black football hero is accused of the brutal murder of his pretty, white ex-wife, a crime for which he is subsequently acquitted following a spectacular, high-profile trial. It’s a story that has elements of race and celebrity, two American obsessions. It’s also at the heart of the five-part “30 for 30” documentary “O.J.: Made in America,” premiering Saturday, June 11, on ABC, and continuing June 14-18 on ESPN. The miniseries from Peabody- and Emmy-winning director Ezra Edelman (“Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush,” “Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals”) uses archival footage and interviews with some of the principles to tell the tale of the personal journey of Orenthal James Simpson, from his childhood in the projects of San Francisco in the 1950s to football stardom in Los Angeles and Buffalo, N.Y., and media stardom in New York City and Hollywood to ultimately the murder trial and acquittal and subsequent conviction on an unrelated robbery charge years later. That’s set against the backdrop of the racial climate in Los Angeles, a city long torn by racial tensions from the Watts riots of 1965 and the Rodney King case of the early ‘90s. “I think that ... what’s lost 20 years later,” Edelman explained to a recent gathering of TV critics in Pasadena, Calif., “is we sort of think there’s this story that took place during this 15-month period, and there was this huge story that took place decades leading up to that that made it that story. I think not understanding that perspective is where I think people retelling the story sort of go wrong. “There was a history that sort of led up to, in terms of who O.J. was from (not only) a celebrity standpoint but as a

black man in America : O.J. Pictured as well as what was happening in the city of Los Angeles that is necessary, fascinating history. And so I think if nothing else, whether there might not be (anything) absolutely new uncovered, I didn’t find some new piece of evidence, because everything was sort of combed over and picked over ad nauseam, I do think that what is hopefully different about this is a total engagement of a narrative that takes place over the course of 40 years and not one.” n Simpso

Those interviewed include former Los Angeles County prosecutors Marcia Clark and Gil Garcetti, former LAPD detective Mark Fuhrman and Simpson friends Al Cowlings and Joe Bell. The documentary marks the first time Clark and Garcetti have agreed to be interviewed about the case since Simpson’s acquittal in 1995. But getting them to participate took some persuading. “Most people have the philosophy, ‘I lived through this. I want it to go away,’ ” Edelman says. “I think that in some ways we really had to sort of convince her through the fact that we did know what we were talking about. We have done our homework. We don’t have an agenda, that I’m just trying to get the story right and that this is something that is sort of we’re taking a big swing in this, and it’s going to be a real story. And I think she was convinced at the way that we approached the story for her to sit down and talk ... .”

t’s never easy for a pageant winner to give up her crown, as the latest Miss USA is now finding out.

Olivia Jordan is the first Oklahoman to hold the title, adding to the significance she’s felt in carrying out her duties for the past year. That job will go to someone else as she crowns her successor in the 65th annual edition of the competition, which Fox will televise from the T-Mobile Arena at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on Sunday, June 5. Not only will the 50 states and the District of Columbia be represented, there’s a 52nd entrant for the first time, voted in by the public through a contest conducted via Twitter. “It has been an incredible year,” lively Tulsa native Jordan reflects. “It has been crazy, and there definitely have been ups and downs and challenges and obstacles, as is always true in life … but if I had the chance to do it again, I would. To represent the place where I grew up was surreal. I got to go home and speak at my high school and stand on the field where I used to be a cheerleader. I had no idea then what my future would hold, or how huge the opportunities were that were ahead of me. I hope I encouraged all those kids to think big and dream big.” Jordan is gratified that the reactions to her as Miss USA signal the ongoing relevance of the pageant, staged by the Miss Universe Organization (and formerly coproduced by Donald Trump). “My experience has been that these competitions are still very much a part of our culture,” she says. “It’s an opportunity to empower young women to set goals to become the greatest versions of themselves – to work on their public-speaking skills, their interview skills, skills that are relevant across the board in life. “All across the world, I’ve seen how relevant this is,” Jordan notes. “Even when I was in New York, people from Brazil would come up and ask for a photo and tell me they’d grown up watching the Miss Universe Pageant as we watch the Super Bowl. It’s a family activity, and for other countries, it really is a huge thing. And even in the U.S., it’s still very relevant.” The personal relevance for aspiring actress Jordan (who appeared in “Hot Tub Time Machine 2”) extends to having made health-care issues her Miss USA platform, her having a bachelor’s degree in health science from Boston University. “I’ve never had any political aspirations,” she maintains, ”but this year, I’ve had the opportunity to lobby for (organizations concerned with) ovarian cancer as well Page 16 YOUR TV LINK Courtesy of Gracenote June 5 - 11, 2016

as the Alzheimer’s Association, and I learned that you can truly make a difference. If you speak to your senators and write to your congressmen, you can really have a voice.” Jordan’s literal voice was in question – as was that of everyone else present – as a contestant in last December’s Miss Universe Pageant, when host Steve Harvey now-famously made an incorrect announcement of the winner and had to dial that back. “It just didn’t feel real,” Jordan recalls. “it was a very bizarre moment, and I think all our hearts immediately sank for Miss Colombia. But I was standing next to Miss Philippines, who is now Miss Universe, and there was excitement for me. I had just gone through that same feeling of, ‘You didn’t get there, your dream isn’t coming true, move on.’ Then I was so joyful for her because to hear in the next second, ‘You know what? It’s not over, it is you, you are the winner,’ is amazing. “The moment was horrible, all in all, but I think both women have gotten great press out of it. I hope that it won’t define either of their lives, and that it opens doors for each of them.” As she ends her Miss USA reign, Jordan allows that “it’s definitely bittersweet. I do get to move on and follow my passion and take my experiences with me, I’m still going to work with the causes I believe in, and I’m excited for what’s next. But it going to be difficult to leave the family I’ve made here.

Things go to the dogs on TBS’ ‘Angie Tribeca’

Hayes MacArthur and Rashida Jones star in “Angie Tribeca,” which returns for Season 2 Monday on TBS. By George Dickie W.C. Fields once said, “Never work with children or animals.” The performance of Jagger on TBS’ “Angie Tribeca” likely wouldn’t have changed his stance. Indeed, the driving, typing and bubble-blowing 5-year-old Belgian Malinois who co-stars as Officer David Hoffman opposite Rashida Jones, Jere Burns, Andree Vermeulen, Hayes MacArthur and Deon Cole on the broad comedy that returns for its second season Monday, June 6, is a bonafide scene-stealer. Only in this case, his cast mates don’t seem to mind. “I have to say Jagger has also grown so much as an actor,” says Jones, tongue firmly in cheek, to a recent gathering of TV critics in Pasadena, Calif. “I truly mean that. He’s great. He’s better than me at taking direction now.” But on a more serious note, series co-creator and executive producer Steve Carell acknowledges there are problems with working with a dog. “It’s always sort of you never know, because the dog doesn’t know that he’s an actor,” Carell explains. “... When I was directing the pilot, there was one scene, and all he has to do is run around the desk and get up into a chair. And it was on that particular day he didn’t feel like doing that. So ... it can make for a long day, but when it works and when Jagger is on the phone and you see him in the background

with his paw up and his head on a phone, you know, it’s totally worth it.” As Season 2 gets going, Angie and the detectives of the LAPD are hard at work investigating more difficult cases, including the murder of a sushi chef, the decapitation by T-shirt cannon of a bad boy member of a boy band and a gang of drug-dealing lifeguards. Guest stars this season include Alfred Molina, James Franco, Heather Graham, Mary McCormack, Noah Wyle, Maya Rudolph, Eriq La Salle and Kevin Pollak. Of course, the tone is the same – characters saying ridiculous things with straight faces, a deadpan approach in the style of such time-honored productions as “Get Smart,” “Police Squad!” and movies by the Zucker Brothers. “I think all of those guys are definitely influential in this sort of tone,” Carell says. “It’s tricky, you know? And it’s incredibly silly. But at the same time, an enormous amount of thought goes into it. And you know, what works and what doesn’t, we’ll see. You just have to use yourself as a barometer, and the cast and the writers, we use our own taste levels and our own voices as barometers in terms of what’s going to work and what’s not. But it’s all subjective. You never know.”

By Dan Ladd Lord Stanley’s Cup, which is awarded annually to the NHL champion, may be the most storied championship trophy in all of the sports. The quest for its next temporary owner continues this week as the Stanley Cup Finals continue with Game 4, Monday, June 6, on NBC. This date is obviously D-Day and ironically the Finals could end should one team be fortunate enough to sweep this best of seven series in four games. If not, Game 5 airs Thursday, June 9, also on NBC. While at press time it’s anyone’s guess who will represent the East and West Conferences of the NHL in the Finals what is known is that there will not be a repeat champion. The Chicago Blackhawks, the 2015 victors, were eliminated in seven games by the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, ensuring that another team will hoist the trophy at season’s end. The Stanley Cup dates back to 1892 when then–Governor General Lord Stanley of Preston, Ont., Canada began awarding the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup to amateur teams. It didn’t become the NHL championship trophy until 1924. The winning team holds the cup until they are dethroned and there has not been a repeat champion since the 1996-97 and 199798 Detroit Red Wings. While the Montreal Canadiens have won the most titles (24), recent dynasties date back to the 1980s when the New York Islanders won four straight from 1981-83. Then, Wayne Gretzky (the Great One) and the Edmonton Oilers dominated the NHL, winning five titles from 1984 through 1989. June 5 - 11, 2016 YOUR TV LINK Courtesy of Gracenote Page 19

It’s ‘Civil War’

as Captain America and comrades divide Our Take

F

irst this year, it was Batman vs. Superman. Now, more superheroes choose sides against other superheroes. “Captain America: Civil War” is all about the Marvel Comics heroes having to decide whose philosophy to back: Captain America or Iron Man, played once again by Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. Recent mayhem involving the Avengers has persuaded the United Nations that it needs them under its wing. If this sounds familiar ... well, it is. The Man of Steel stood similar dissecting in his most recent movie, so the phrase “political correctness” has had a lot of meaning lately when it comes to people who wear costumes and have superpowers. Iron Man decides to play along with the U.N.’s concerns and go by tat governing body’s new rules, but Captain America? Not so much – and that forces Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and all the others to decide who to side with. Of course, it doesn’t take long for a new villain to put the situation to the test, and that naturally adds another layer to things here. Will some of the Avengers hold back on Page 20 YOUR TV LINK Courtesy of Gracenote June 5 - 11, 2016

what they normally do to vanquish evil, knowing Big Brother is watching, or will they ultimately proceed with doing what they do best – thus risking more collateral damage that won’t make the U.N. happy? It’s an interesting dilemma, and thank goodness it makes for a good story. We certainly know by now that the special-effects team can handle the visual marvels, but it takes more than all that fury to make a truly satisfying chapter of the franchise. What’s also commendable is that every principal cast member gets his or her fair share of time – you’d think that wouldn’t be tough with almost 2-1/2 hours to play with, but that hasn’t always happened – and it encompasses a Marvel character newly introduced to the screen as Chadwick Boseman arrives as Black Panther. We also get a look at the newest Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland. (With the way that role keeps being reinvented and recast, every living male soon will have a chance to play it.) So, even though “Civil War” has Captain America’s name on it, it really belongs to all the Avengers –- and the good news is that they haven’t run out of screen steam yet.
