about

Christiaan Diedericks Dance Macabre – Cellular Memory I Two colour stone lithograph on 300gsm The work is currently for sale at Diedericks/ Faber Fine Art

about the front page The front page of this edition of the Palms Chronicle is taken from a portion of a stone lithograph, ‘Dance Macabre – Cellular Memory I’, by well-known South African artist/printmaker Christiaan Diedericks, one of the two owners of Diedericks/Faber Fine Art at the Palms. Christiaan completed eight new stone lithographs at The Atelier Le Grand Village in Limoges, France during a two month artist’s residency (AIR) in July/August 2014. Dance Macabre celebrates the popular notion of cellular memory (a variation of body memory, the pseudoscientific hypothesis that memories can be stored in individual cells in the human body) and the life of a special friend. The collective/gallery promotes the work of local and international artists, often in association with galleries, at local and international art fairs and art shows. The gallery currently focuses on artists working on paper. Diedericks/Faber Fine Art also offers international artist residencies to local and international artists and printmakers. What came first? the bunny or the egg? At Rococoa we’re not fussed about the answer – we’re happy to offer you both. In fact, you could even have your bunny balancing on an egg! Those who are interested in the answer, may also wonder why the Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs have become the most commercially recognised symbols of Easter. It’s thought that that the word ‘Easter’ comes from a pagan figure called ‘Eostre’, who was celebrated as the Goddess of Spring in Northern Europe. Eostre’s earthly symbol was a rabbit – a common symbol of fertility given that rabbits give birth to large litters, especially in spring. Similarly, eggs are an ancient symbol of fertility, symbolising birth and new life. The Orthodox Churches had a custom of abstaining from eating eggs during the fast of Lent, in the run up to Easter. To prevent the eggs from being wasted they were roasted or boiled with foliage, for added flavour. This may well have given the shells a pretty colour. When these church goers broke their fast they would have done so with those colourful boiled eggs. The legend of the Easter Bunny bringing baskets of colourful decorated eggs appears to have surfaced in America in the early 1800s with the arrival of German settlers. Come and have a look at Rococoa’s selection of Easter Bunnies and Easter Eggs, and once you’ve made your purchase place your till slip into their lucky jar to stand the chance of winning a 3.5kg chocolate Easter Egg. ISLAND HOPPING IN GREECE

10 Interesting and Random facts about Cocoa and Chocolate • Chocolate comes from the Cocoa Bean – which is pronounced as Ka-Kaw • Cocoa Pods grow on the tree trunk – not on the branches • There are 20 to 50 cocoa seeds in one cocoa pod • You need about 100 cocoa beans to make a 100g chocolate slab • Raw cocoa seeds look a bit like a small Litchi and taste a bit like it too • The Aztec’s used to use the dried cocoa beans as currency – 20 beans would by you a rabbit for dinner and 100 beans could get you a slave • West Africa produces 71% of the worlds Cocoa and the Ivory Coast is the country that produces the most in the world

Think of the Greek Islands, and the image likely to spring to mind is that of the Cyclades, a group of picture-perfect islands which provide the ideal venue for island hopping. The most evocative of these images is of white-washed, cuboid houses on a hillside above an azure bay; houses dashed with splashes of bright blue, with the odd windmill or domed church mixed in. The northern Cyclades are within easy reach of Athens with regular inter-island ferries. Mykonos, Santorini and Ios form the touristic heart of these islands. Naxos, Paros and Milos also offer all that is expected, but are perhaps better seen out of the high season. There are a host of smaller, lesser-known islands that tend to compete for the most fashionable, destination of the moment. Folegandros, to the south, once remote behind its tall cliffs, is becoming increasingly trendy; whereas nearby Sikinos, with its tiny population of under 300, is still little-visited. Everyone who has been to Greece will have their own favourite island. However a visit to one of the Cyclades islands will surely count as one of the most authentic experiences. Locals carry on with their daily tasks as they have done for hundreds of years, with local men sitting outside cafés drinking ouzo or beer and playing draughts. Whether you want to party, have an active holiday or just relax in a private villa, Rufaro can arrange the perfect holiday to suit your needs. Soak in the longer warm days and balmy nights and indulge in the incomparable Visitdelicacies www.inhousefurniture.co. food and that is so typical of Greece.
