Thomas Morey

THOMAS MOREY Thomas Morey belongs to the tenth generation of this Chassagne family. He grew up familiar with his grand-parents’ holding and then worked for 12 years on that of his parents. Then, in 2006, he decided to set up his own

Claude Morey, a native of Paris l’Hôpital, a small commune of Saône-et-Loire lying some ten kilometres from Chassagne-Montrachet, arrived in the village in 1643.

BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY Our cuvée of Bourgogne Chardonnay comes from two equalsized plots of vines in the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet.

H I S T O RY A N D T E R R O I R The first plot was planted in 1989 with material selected from the most robust old vines of the domaine and grows on level ground and brown, clayey soils, shallow in places.

The second, planted in 2004, derives from select clones now growing on stony and gently sloping ground in the climat called “Pierres”.

TA S T I N G There is a considerable difference in the style of Chardonnay grown from these two plots. Blended, they yield a seductive wine that is a worthy representative of its appellation.

Very aromatic, with notes of white flowers and ripe white fruits. The mouth is both rounded and mineral, set off by a vivacity that signals lightness and youth.

A Bourgogne Chardonnay should be drunk within two or three years of its being bottled.

CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1 ER CRU LES BAUDINES Lying in the southern part of the Chassagne appellation, it rubs shoulders with the 1er cru Santenay plots “La Comme” and “Les Gravières”. This 1er cru plot occupies one of our most elevated situations.

H I S T O RY Brought back under cultivation in the early sixties, this climat was totally abandoned after the phylloxera crisis due to its distance from the village. The truffle-bearing oaks which had grown up there had diameters of 40-50 cm, testimony to a long period of disuse.

TERROIR The slightly-sloping ground is banked, the soil not very stony and, up-slope, fairly deep and compact, resembling white clay.

TA S T I N G Two parcels, equal in area, planted in 1973 and 2002 respectively, yield this wine which generally offers great delicacy, elegance and minerality. In youth in can be a touch acidic but this is a guarantee of its keeping qualities.

CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1 ER CRU MORGEOT 2011 The Morgeot climat totals 58 hectares, bigger even than Clos Vougeot, and the largest 1er cru of the wine-growing “côte”.

H I S T O RY Our firm’s Morgeot derives from two named plots: “Les Brussonnes” and “Les Fairendes”. The first of these was planted in 1986 and is a recent acquisition which first was included in our cuvée of Morgeot in 2005. Half of the vines in “Les Fairendes” were planted in 1964 and the remainder in 1974. This property has been in our family for a long time and was owned by my great-grandfather at the beginning of the last century.

TERROIR “Les Brussonnes” is on a slight slope, the soil porous, shallow and with small stones overlying bedrock. “Les Fairendes” lies above “La Boudriotte” on deeper soil where rocks break the surface.

TA S T I N G This handsome portion of the Morgeot appellation produces excellent white wines - meaty, opulent, rich, unctuous and less mineral than those from “Ruchottes” or “Caillerets”. These wines have real complexity. They are rich and well-balanced and need at least 5 to 7 years to reach their peak.

BATARD MONTRACHET GRAND CRU 2011 Our Bâtard-Montrachet, of which we are especially proud, lies at an altitude of 240-250 metres below the road which separates it from Montrachet.

H I S T O RY This is an ideal site for the Chardonnay grape - two parcels of vines, both in the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet. Twothirds planted in 1950 and the remaining third in 1964.

TERROIR Brown limestone soil enriched with clay and silt, washed down from above and mixed with a good proportion of pebbles. The soil is well-exposed, sufficiently porous, well-drained (favouring run-off ), and provides the warm, dry conditions best suited to vine-growing.

TA S T I N G Richer and firmer than a 1er cru, our Bâtard-Montrachet reveals its power and structure while still young, but nevertheless is built for laying down. Fat, meaty, vinous, fleshy and full-bodied, it has a solidity that makes its aromas of honey, toast and almonds almost chewable. It will be at its best after a number of years.
