BORDEAUX PRIMEURS 2015 ENFIN UN GRAND MILLÉSIME ! EINDELIJK WEER EEN HISTORISCH JAAR! 2015 bezit het meest charmerende fruit van het laatste decennium en overtreft hiermee 2005-2009 en 2010 in puurheid en elegantie. De tanninestructuur is subtieler dan die van deze grote jaargangen waardoor vele wijnen hun groot potentieel ook jong zullen prijsgeven. De welgekomen regenbuien in augustus hebben te lang aangehouden in het noorden van de Médoc waardoor niet alle kastelen een topprestatie zullen bottelen. Grote homogeniteit evenwel in Pomerol en Saint-Emilion waar de minder gekende Châteaux vaak uitstekende prijs/kwaliteit in de kelders hebben. Prachtige soms monumentale wijnen zijn er in de maak in zowel Margaux, Pauillac en Saint-Julien. Ook in Pessac-Léognan zitten er grote wijnen in de vaten. De witte wijnen zijn van goede tot uitstekende kwaliteit, soms evenwel iets te rijp.
2015 possède le fruit le plus charmeur de cette dernière décennie et sa pureté et son élégance surclassent 2005, 2009 et 2010. La structure tannique est plus raffinée que celle de ces grands millésimes ce qui permettra de découvrir leur grand potentiel plus tôt. Dans le Nord du Médoc, des pluies bienvenues en août se sont quelque peu trop prolongées rendant la qualité moins uniforme. Par contre grande homogénéité à Pomerol et Saint-Emilion où les châteaux moins connus vont souvent nous offrir d’étonnants rapports prix/qualité. Margaux, Pauillac et Saint Julien nous livreront des vins magnifiques, parfois monumentaux. A Pessac-Léognan les fûts regorgent de grands vins. Les blancs sont bons voire excellents, parfois un rien trop riches.

Les vignes évoluent sur des sols chauds, majoritairement graveleux et ont une Verpakking / Caissage : 12 fl/bt moyenne d’âge de 25 ans. Gérée depuis 1995 par l’actuel propriétaire, elle bénéficie de soins attentifs tant au vignoble qu’au cuvier. De nouvelles cuves en inox thermo-régulées ainsi qu’un nouveau chai à barriques garantissent une parfaite vinification. L’élevage s’effectue pour moitié en barriques (un tiers renouvelé chaque année) et pour moitié en cuves.” 4
Saint-Emilion Château de Fonbel, Grand Cru Wine Advocate : “The 2015 Fonbel, which you might regard as the entry-level wine of the Vauthier family, is a blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Carmenère and 5% Petit Verdot. It has a straightforward, lavender-tinged bouquet with a chalky scent that becomes more apparent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin and a fine thread of acidity. Smooth with dark cherries, red plum and cassis notes, it exerts a pleasant grip on the finish.”

Château Corbin, Grand Cru Classé Wine Advocate : “The 2015 Corbin is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that was cropped at 38 hl/ha picked between 17 September and 9 October. It has an intense bouquet, a touch of fish oil underneath the feisty red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a dense, quite structured opening, a tight fist of red and black fruit at the moment that I am certain will open up during its barrel maturation. What I appreciate here is the precision on the finish, at a level that I have not encountered with respect to this property.”

The 2015 is going to require quite a bit of time to come together, but it is impressive, that much is obvious. Matured almost in 100% new oak, it has a very pure and charming bouquet, the Merlot dominant and slightly shrouding the Cabernet Franc at the moment. It is worth staying with this Pomerol, because it does change after four to five minutes in the glass, revealing touches of truffle and iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, understated on the entry but gaining momentum in the glass, retaining a wonderful sense of symmetry and finishing with precision and class.”

It has a rather introspective bouquet, broody and earthy, although with aeration it reveals pleasant blackberry and wild strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, a little rustic and brutish at the moment with an abrasive finish that will hopefully soften by the time it is in bottle. I feel that this was just upended by the storms that swept across the region in September.”

The palate is well balanced and much more reserved than the aromatics: crisp and firm tannin, nicely focused with a pleasing salinity on the structured finish that suggest that this Labegorce will reward long-term ageing. ”

Winemaker Alexandre Van Beek told me that the 2015 “...reflects the true terroir at Giscours that created the great wines of the 1960s and 1970s.” That is something to live up to with fresh memories of the 1961 in my brain. The bouquet is very intense and almost “untamed” at first, but it calms down in the glass, revealing attractive scents of blackberry, raspberry, cedar and graphite. I appreciate the balance here and compared to recent vintages, there is clearly more fruit concentration on the finish, a pleasant salinity on the aftertaste. For those that prefer a leaner style of Claret, this comes recommended, and as I have seen in the past, it tends to put on weight by the time it is in bottle.”

Remarkably fresh and vivid, the 2015 offers an alluring interplay of textural creaminess and energy. I imagine the 2015 will age effortlessly for decades, as these wines do. The 2015 is 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon, fermented in barrel, with blocked malo. Domaine de Chevalier’s Blanc remains a reference point, perhaps the reference point, for dry white wine in Bordeaux. Don’t miss it!”
