I hope everyone has recovered from World Dairy Expo and greatly enjoyed the time they spent there, whether as an exhibitor, Congratulations to Carissa (Tolzman) and Jesse Backhaus on working for your company in the trade show or just as a spectator. This year was a great year for our WHA members where they their marriage on September 21, 2019. Seth and Sarah (Higgins) Elsner were joined in marriage on claimed a number of champion titles and class winnings. I was fortunate to be able to get a chance to watch some of the August 31, 2019. Red & White and Holstein shows. An exciting moment for me was when a cow I’ve admired for a long time, Butz-Butler Gold Barbara-ET, was chosen as Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show. It was even more exciting because a third of her owners reside in Wisconsin. It was also tremendous to see MeadManor Def Adeline-Red claim the Supreme Champion of the Junior Show and Milksource Thunder-Red-ET capturing Supreme Upcoming Issues & Advertising Deadlines Heifer of both the junior and open shows. You can learn more about these animals on pages 14 and 16. December 2019 Issue Now that Expo has passed, I know many of you are preparing for ads due by November 8 dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy. With his bride of 70 years holding his hand, David Robert Rose, 92, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 7:07 AM on Monday, Oct. 7 at his home in Eden. He was born in Fond du Lac on Sunday, May 29, 1927 to William and Marie (Grahl) Rose. Throughout his life, David referred to and was proud of his attendance at Jackson College in rural Eden. He also bred cows for East Central Breeders and until cutting back only a few years ago sold semen for SEMEX with his company, Garden of Eden Genetics. David won many local and international awards and was both a charter member as well as one of the last members to leave the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (now the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin). In his own words David said, “I had a grand time being alive so don’t shed any tears for me when I’m gone.” He affectionately called Jean, “Wiffey”, and together they traveled the world with their best friends, Clarence and Ginny Boyke. Breeder Profile

District 3: Dajeda & Fast-Track Holsteins by Ashley Yager There is no greater feeling than to see a passion for this industry in the next generation, and for the owners and crew that surrounds Fast-Track Holsteins, Jason and Leane Richardson, the dairy is a labor of love and a way to come together as a family for a common cause. Jason and Leane farm with Leane’s parents, Daryl and Jennifer Dammen, sister Alyssa, and brother Jakobi at Dajeda Holsteins. In true family style, each team member has their own list of duties that keep the farm running. Alyssa heads up the milk cow feeding, and Jakobi oversees the field work in addition to his own custom chopping business. Jason and Leane have taken special interest in the genetics of the operation, as Jason mates everything on the farm and helps make sire purchasing decisions. Leane also takes care of all registrations, breeding, herd health, and fresh cow protocols. It is truly a family effort on the farm, as everyone has his or her ‘niche.’ Alyssa and Leane spend a lot of time in the barn and enjoy the opportunity to work with their parents while raising their children in this way of life. They have plenty to keep them busy, as Leane has two girls, Sienna (4) and Natalie (2) with one more on the way. Alyssa adds two to the mix, Ivory (5) and Vince (3). Jason also works off the farm at Klondike Cheese in Monroe. The herd in its entirety consists of around 100 cows on test, with a full 77-stall barn. The family can get the entire barn milked with eight units and two people in an hour and a half. The family runs 360 acres and on a normal year can grow most of their feed. As with many across the state this year, purchasing some forage will be a need this fall. The Dammen family has called the farm home since 1992, renting the farm before purchasing in 2000. The bulk of the cows enjoy a sand-bedded stall that is groomed daily. Cows go out two to three hours a day during the winter and have access to pasture multiple hours a day in the summer. The barn is well-equipped with wide feed alleys that make perfect roadways for the tiniest of vehicles in any weather condition. When it comes to mating, size is something Leane and Alyssa are becoming more aware of. In fact, they recently had to raise the vacuum line in the barn as the young cows were getting too big. It’s no surprise to see such big beautiful bovines, as Jason picks bulls that are at least three points on stature, strength and dairy form. When asked about their breeding philosophy Jason said, “We breed for those big stylish cows that are going to stay in the herd for a long time while being productively efficient. The type of cow that makes us want to get up in the morning are those with big uphill runs and wide front ends, big sweeping rib, and nice snug udders that are going to get better with time.” Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) has been a major decision factor as well since Jason took the mating reins six years ago, and there have been fewer issues with conception and overall pregnancy rates as a result. Leane has also been cracking down on the use of sexed semen, 8 – November 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News

as past use has created an abundance of heifers. At one point the team had thought about expansion, but in a tight dairy economy, selectively culling the excess has been a better option. This has allowed them to get some more of ‘their type’ back in the barn. Jason has been using bulls from the Blondin breeding program as of late, with multiple breedings to Unstopabull, Calvados, Last Night and Master. He’s also using a few bulls from ABS like Addison, Denver and Bailey. When asked what calves are standing out in the heifer pens Jason was quick to reply “Denver!” Jason commented, “Our Denver calves have exactly what we breed for. They are consistently made being super square in the rump, long from head to tail, growthy, aggressive heifers that just demand your eye.” Armani was a bull that the Dammens were scared to use, but Jason insisted and he helped to balance out the herd height/regulate herd size. Within the Dajeda herd, Jason and Leane have 14 of their own under the Fast-Track prefix. Jason has taken a great interest and responsibility in marketing the genetics of the herd, utilizing sale consignments and shows at all levels to further publicize the group. Fast-Track tries to consign to at least one sale each year, and this October sold a pick of two fancy black December calves in the Pioneer Dairy Classic. The calves are twin Atwoods from an outstanding young Sanchez lost second lactation that was VG-86 88-MS as a two-year-old cow. Excellent San ElectrifyET was second Senior 2-year-old at District 3 Holstein Show in 2018 and placed fifth Senior 3-year-old at the Midwest Spring National Holstein Show. Occasionally a 4-H youth will reach out for a calf, or something on Facebook will catch someone’s eye to spark some interest. This summer Jason had purchased a Solomon winter calf from an EX94 Dundee and nine more EX dams, then turned around and was able to sell her a month later. The calf is now excelling in the show

ring, as she was fourth place at the New York State Fair. The couple also sold an Absolute heifer, that Jason had purchased from Daryl, from a polled VG-86 Jas-K Atwood Topgun-VRC daughter. She now lives in Texas, recently placed fifth in the fall calf class at the Texas State Fair and will show at a couple more shows yet this year. Jason was excited to get a summer junior two-year-old to the ring at World Dairy Expo this fall – a McCutchen greatgranddaughter of Goldwyn Missy. Jason and Leane own this young cow with their partner Robert Bontz of Peoria, Ill. This outstanding young cow is made right and awaits the classifier this January. She was fresh in June with a Sirwood heifer calf and is already bred back for June 2020 in service to Unstopabull. Another exciting animal in their pens is a fancy Absolute December calf. Her dam is Gundys Brendal Audra, purchased on the Green/Rock Dual County Sale and EX-92 with a 94-MS. “Akila” is backed by the EX-92 Brendal x EX Talent x EX-91 Redmarker x EX-91 Lee then the one and only Chief Adeen. Most youth that get involved in showing have that one animal that lights the fire in their belly, and for Leane it was Dajeda Advent Wonder-Red, EX-91. Wonder was gifted to Leane by her grandpa – he brought three cows home from a sale with her dad and just one stuck. When that one had her next heifer calf, he wanted Leane to have it. When she had a bull, grandpa did the next best thing and gave her her first red heifer calf from Wonder’s dam, an EX-91 Talent.

“We breed for those big stylish cows that are going to stay in the herd for a long time while being productively efficient. The type of cow that makes us want to get up in the morning are those with big uphill runs and wide front ends, big sweeping rib, and nice snug udders that are going to get better with time.” Wonder was one of those cows that looked great in the barn, and after Jason convinced Daryl and Leane that this cow had something special, Leane took her out for the first time as a fouryear-old and she was Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show at the Midwest Spring Red & White Show. She really hit her stride as a 5-year-old, though, when she was Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show again that year and Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show at the District 3 Holstein show. She took that title being over one year in milk. Wonder would

Dajeda Holsteins / Fast-Track Holsteins The Dammen and Richardson Families | South Wayne • 100 cows • 360 acres • Sires: Unstopabull, Calvados, Last Night, Master, Addison, Denver and Bailey also go on to be named Honorable Mention Grand Champion of the Junior Show at the Midwest Spring National Holstein Show the following year. One of the standout herd sires in the older cows has been Dempsey, as Dajeda Dempsey Fire went EX-93 this summer. Her pedigree includes a Very Good Piccolo x Excellent Atom, and she has a March calf by Denver that is cut right. The “Old Atom” as they like to call her, also left them with a McCutchen daughter that went Excellent this time around and isn’t going to stop there. The last major standout in the herd is a 12-year-old Advent that in 10 lactations has put out over 220,000 pounds of milk. Dajeda Advent Ollie has proven to be a milk wagon and a great matriarch being a herd mate with her two Brokaw daughters, two Awesome-Red granddaughters, Aftershock granddaughter, and a Jordy-Red granddaughter. It’s been a busy summer for the Richardson and Dammen families, a true testament to the job they do taking outstanding care of their herd. Jason and Leane tied the knot in July and are excited to continue raising their kids in the lifestyle that brought them together. They met nine years ago at a dairy judging practice, showed together in high school, have been together for seven years, and the rest is history. One of the great things about how Jason and Leane are able to farm with family is taking turns enjoying a day here and there off the farm with the kids. The farm is very close to Yellowstone State Park, and Leane hopes to get there more next summer to hike and swim more. The Richardson family also tries to take a trip to Florida for a week every other year, and Leane’s family has a cabin in northern Wisconsin that they like to use for a long weekend getaway. Farming is more and more becoming a labor of love, and the crew at Dajeda and Fast-Track are proof of that in the best possible way. Raising kids right, toughing out the day-to-day side-by-side with family and continuing to make the most of each and every opportunity is all a part of the mix at this South Wayne dairy – a dairy that will continue driving forward to the next generation.

Mead-Manor Def Adeline-Red Grand Champion of the International Red & White Show Supreme Champion of the Junior Show

Mead-Manor Def Adeline-Red is no stranger to the show ring and has had much success for Mike and Megan Moede, Algoma. As the winning Junior 3-year-old in both the junior and open shows, Adeline was the Grand Champion of the International Junior Red & White Show. Leading up to World Dairy Expo, Adeline was the Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Summer Championship Red & White Junior Show, Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Open Show, and Honorable Mention Grand Champion of the Open Show. After this show, she made the trek to Milwaukee for the Wisconsin State Fair Junior Dairy Show where she was the Grand Champion of the Red & White Show and Supreme Champion Cow. Adeline’s pedigree is from the heart of the Adeens, as her dam is a VG-85-2Y Absolute from BVK Atwood Abilene EX-93, and then Ms Kingstead Chief Adeen-ET, EX-94, herself. At Mead-Manor, Adeline has a natural Solomon and Tatoo heifers. While she has not been worked with reproductively, the Moedes have plans to IVF her this fall to a sire that can produce black and red heifers. The Moede hobby farm consists of approximately 20 high type Holstein and Jersey animals. Rob Moede works as a grain merchandiser at United Cooperative, while Debra runs her own small animal vet clinic, Mead-Manor Pet Clinic. Michael is a senior at UW-Madison and Megan is a senior at Algoma High School. Adeline is the lone milk cow at Mead-Manor while the rest of the operation focuses on raising heifers. A few cows are housed at Jauquet Holsteins and Srnka Farms.

Milksource Thunder-Red-ET Junior Champion of the International Red & White Junior and Open Shows Supreme Champion Heifer of the Junior and Open Shows

Milksource Thunder-Red-ET, exhibited by Molly Olstad and Tristan Ostrom, swept the junior and open shows in all areas. After being named the Junior Champion of both the junior and open Red & White Shows, Thunder made a rumble by claiming both the Supreme Champion Heifer title of the Junior and Open Shows. Thunder hails from World Dairy Expo royalty, Strans-Jen-D Tequila-Red-ET EX-96 2E, the two-time Grand Champion of the International Red & White Show. This Avalanche daughter is also a maternal sister to the 2018 Reserve Supreme Champion Heifer, Milksource Taelyn-ET. Molly purchased half interest of Thunder in the spring of 2019 in partnership with Tristan for a junior owned and exhibited project animal. As a September 15 heifer, Thunder was immature and lacked some frame for much of the show year. As the summer went on, she continued to develop and never missed a beat heading into the fall. “Her development over time has been awe inspiring to watch and was culminated by the success at WDE. It was an amazing experience for Molly and our family to be a part of. Thank you to the Milksource team and Mandi and Eddie,” Eric Olstad said.

World Dairy Expo Champion Features Butz-Butler Gold Barbara 2E-95 96-MS GMD

Butz-Butler Gold Barbara-ET, 2E-95 96-MS GMD, has a decorated past of class winnings, local and regional championships, but had never claimed the elite title of Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo. Until 2019 at nine years of age. Barbara was the winning production cow in a tough class of well-known cows and was chosen as the Senior Champion. In judge Chad Ryan’s comments during the grand champion selection he noted that he “has a soft spot for older cows.” Barbara is a long, silky, dairy cow with an udder that you’d love to have on any 9-year-old cow with sound feet and legs. Barbara will be 10 on November 11. In addition to her outstanding conformation, Barbara’s pedigree goes back to one of the most famous brood cows in the world, Regancrest-PR Barbie-ET EX-92 GMD DOM 6*. Barbara’s dam is Regancrest (Shottle) Brasilia 2E-92 DOM 15*. Both Brasilia and Barbie have been popular around the world for generations and have had embryos exported worldwide as well as putting bulls into stud like Braxton and Baltimore, both Barbie sons, and Brady, an Atwood brother to Barbara. “Since the demand for Barbara’s embryos is so high, we freeze every high-quality embryo for export and only implant #2 grade embryos for pregnancy,” Terri Packard, owner at Kueffner Holsteins & Jerseys said. “When we do have daughters born, they are either consigned to high-focus sales or divided among the partners for their own personal ownership.” Barbara will be conventionally flushed this winter. To date, she has produced 155,000 pounds of milk with her 6-year-old record being her best at 365 days 43,381 pounds of milk, 4.4 percent fat, 1890 pounds of fat, 2.8 percent protein and 1228 pounds of protein. Terri and Ernie noted that Barbara often has long lactations for two reasons: first, international 16 – November 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News

demand for embryos and second, her will to milk; especially when she is on pasture. Barbara has been owned by a long list of breeders over her nearly 10 years, so her daughters and sons in North America carry a variety of prefixes. Of Barbara’s 20 classified daughters in the US and Canada, only one is scored below Very Good as a first lactation animal. Barbara had a few sons over the years that have been popular with type breeders including Brazzle (Windbrook), Bachelor (McCutchen) and Bankroll (Let It Snow). While Barbara resides in Boonsboro, Maryland, a third of her owners live in Wisconsin: Rodney Hetts, Renee (Hetts) Beilke, and Scott Armbrust. In 2016, the trio entered the Gold Barbara partnership with Kueffner Holsteins and Dr. Matt Iager. “I don’t think it’s possible to look at a cow like Barbara and not be immediately taken by her,” Hetts says. “She’s truly a complete cow – awesome feet and legs, a textbook udder, dairyness for days with style to burn!” Dr. Armbrust added that he initially was looking at purchasing a daughter of Barbara but when the opportunity arose to go in on the cow herself with Rodney, Renee, Matt and Ernie and Terri, he immediately said yes and mentioned he was honored to be asked. Prior to winning the International Holstein Show, Barbara was the Intermediate Champion in 2013 and Reserve Intermediate Champion in 2012. As an aged cow in 2017, she was the Senior Champion and Grand Champion at the New York Spring Show. In addition to these accomplishments, she’s been nominated AllAmerican or All-Canadian eight times and was All-American or All-Canadian or Reserve in those respective contests six times. “We were all hoping to have Barbara calve again and be ready for World Dairy Expo,” Scott says. “The plan all came together this year with Barbara calving in July and returning to Madison where she has won many times.” With Barbara’s championship, one of the Allen Hetts Memorial trophy gets to come home. Rodney and Renee’s father, Allen, was one of the founders of World Dairy Expo in Madison as we know it. In his honor, the Grand Champion of each breed receives a trophy named after the well-respected Holstein breeder. “My parents were intensely devoted to making World Dairy Expo what it is today, and to finally be able to win his namesake trophy, with my wife, my kids and my grandson all there to witness this moment - it’s something I will cherish forever,” Rodney says. “Being a part of winning this trophy honoring our father has been a chance of a lifetime,” Renee added. “Knowing how instrumental he was in starting WDE, along with our mother’s devotion, our family has been blessed. I am especially happy for my brother Rodney who has worked in the dairy industry his entire life.” Rodney and Renee grew up on their family farm, Crescent Beauty Farm in Fort Atkinson. After their herd dispersal in 1988, Rodney took up fitting and worked with Shore Holsteins in Canada where he helped sell heifers to Mexico. Today, he manages Hetts Embryo Exports and he and his siblings have developed two hotels, while Renee took a nursing career path and is now retired after 38 years.

Dr. Scott Armbrust moved to Wisconsin in 1975 to work on dairy cattle after graduating veterinary school at Iowa State. He started an embryo transfer business in 1978. He’s been involved with a number of prominent cows in partnership including Ripvalley Bell Tammy, Lawcrest Rotate Mindy, Amlaird Lee Alice, Crescentmead Durham Louella and Harvue Roy Frosty. Ernie Kueffner and his wife, Terri Packard, own and manage Kueffner Holsteins and Jerseys in Boonsboro, Maryland, where they’ve bred and developed a number of All-Americans, class winners and champions in the Holstein, Jersey and Brown Swiss breeds. The last partner, Dr. Matt Iager owns and operates MDWest-View Genetics and he has his own practice as an embryo transfer vet. In fact, Dr. Iager does all of the ET work on Barbara and houses her at his facility in Boonsboro when she is dry. Iager has been involved with Barbara since 2013.

Blexys Crush Budweiser-ET Reserve Junior Champion of the International Holstein Show Exhibited by Budjon, Vail, Woodmansee, Abbott and Van Excel

In 2017, Rosiers Blexy Goldwyn captured the Supreme Champion title at World Dairy Expo and the interest of numerous Holstein enthusiasts. Fast forward two years and Blexys Crush Budweiser-ET, exhibited by Budjon, Vail, Woodmansee, Abbott and Van Excel, wins the Reserve Junior Champion of the International Holstein Show. This Crush winter calf started her show season at the Midwest National Spring Holstein Show where she placed fourth. Later in the season, Budweiser topped the winter calf class at the District 8 Holstein show and was the Reserve Junior Champion. In her next two shows, the Wisconsin Summer Championship Holstein Show and World Dairy Expo, she’d replicate the same success. Budweiser’s full sister, Blexys Doorman Brandy, and Budweiser were able to claim the third place spot in a strong group of Junior Best Three at World Dairy Expo. Doorman Brandy was also third in the fall yearling class. At Budjon Farms, Blexy offspring include two Unix daughters, two full sisters to Budweiser and another Doorman. “With Blexy’s sire stack and the great individual that she is, there is no question that she will continue to pump out daughters like Budweiser and Brandy,” Kelli Cull said. “The pattern she has set in her daughters reminds us a lot of the Elegance family.” Overall, World Dairy Expo proved to be a very successful one for the Budjon Farms team and show string. The string boasted 10 different heifers from Budjon cow families that placed in the

Jacobs Doorman Victorie, owned by Milk Source, RansomRail and Laurie Fischer, claimed the Reserve Intermediate Champion title of the International Holstein Show. The winning senior 3-year old is scored VG-89 in Canada with her second calf and resides at Milk Source Genetics in Kaukauna. In her second lactation, Victorie has made 32,049 pounds of milk, 1106 pounds of fat and 988 pounds of protein. Victorie was purchased on the Best of Jacobs Sale earlier in 2019. This Doorman is out of a VG-89-CAN Goldwyn, from a VG-89-CAN Dundee, then Jacobs Spirit Valsie EX-92-CAN. The Milk Source team is currently prepping Victorie for the Royal Winter Fair and for getting her bred back for the 2020 show season. Fifty milk cows call Milk Source Genetics home. Cows are fed a TMR and show cows are on a hay and show grain ration. The herd is managed by Eddie and Mandi Bue and Mandi stated that their goal is to “strive to breed and develop cows and heifers that can compete at any level and survive in any environment. We focus on a breeding program that provides equal parts balance, strength and style.” Floydholm Mc Emoji-ET EX-92 Intermediate Champion of the International Holstein Show Exhibited by La Femme Fatale and Shawn & Seth Nehls

The story of Floydholm Mc Emoji-ET is rooted in Wisconsin Holsteins. A descendent of Krull Broker Elegance EX-96, Emoji’s pedigree is backed by Wisconsin breeding, show winnings and Excellent scores. This winning Junior 3-year-old and Intermediate Champion of the International Holstein Show was purchased on the Great Northern Holiday Sale as a bred heifer by Shawn and Seth Nehls, Hustisford. The Nehls brothers have a Gold Chip spring yearling from Emoji due in April 2020 to Undenied. Emoji is a McCutchen from Budjon-JK Damion Eklipse-ET November 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 17

EX-94, then backed by Goldwyn Escence EX-95, Durham Esquisite EX-92, Encore Electra EX95, and Elegance EX-96. She was bred by Floydholm – the David Sarbacker family. Shawn Nehls exhibited Emoji in August at the 2019 Wisconsin Holstein All-Breeds Futurity, where she walked away with a win and captured the interest of judge Mandi Bue. “When they [Shawn and Seth] exhibited her at the futurity, she was a handy winner in the class and I couldn’t get her out of my mind,” Mandi said. “So some very dear friends decided that we would make our first purchase as La Femme Fatale. Shawn and Seth allowed us to buy in on Emoji and she called Milksource Genetics her home by the end of August. Kruschke family hosts a successful State Picnic The Kruschke family of Crisdhome Farms, New Richmond, hosted the 2019 WHA Picnic on a beautiful day in September. They had the herd looking great and visitors enjoyed seeing great type cows from deep pedigrees. The herd currently boasts 52 EX and 44 VG cows with a rolling herd average over 24,000 pounds. Visitors were also able to view the Kruschke’s new dry cow and heifer barn built in 2016. WHA hosted a judging contest for attendees featuring three classes of cows: aged, 4-year-old and 2-year-old classes. Roughly 200 Holstein enthusiasts from Wisconsin and Minnesota gathered to enjoy a meal and games. The kids especially enjoyed the corn box and bouncy house. Following a welcome from WHA board member Erica Ullom, Tom Morris introduced the Kruschke family. The farm is operated by Chuck, Dave, Pete, Jake and Jade. The family thanked everyone for coming to their event. Jim Moriarty, director of dairy consulting and lending operations with Compeer Financial, gave a brief talk about dairy markets in the past and present as well as an outlook for the future. Erica Ullom gave an update on WHA activities and announced the judging contest winners. The top three in each division received a trophy and cash prize. Youth, 14 & under: 1. Cathryn Gunst; 2. I encourage all of you to fill out these awards and consider someone for the WHY Leadership Merit award. There are a few updates for the contest room. All contest room entries must be taken or produced since the previous Junior Convention by the junior member entering the project. There will also be two divisions for the advertising contest, division one are ads solely designed and produced by the junior member and division two are ads that are professionally designed or assisted with. New this year for Dairy Bowl is that there is no limit on the number of teams from a single county per division as long as all of the teams are full teams. Dairy Bowl chairs will assign WI individuals to a team. If there is an odd number of WI individuals, teams of three may be asked to include an individual on their team to make a complete team and to allow everyone the chance to participate. Raffle tickets are also still available. Be sure to purchase your tickets for a chance to win the grand prize, a calf donated by the Weigel family! Good luck to all of you as you prepare for Junior Convention, Matthew Gunst November 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 25

Lauren Jessica’s

Princess Journals Hello Friends!

again,

Holstein

Pumping music, an excited crowd, colored shavings, and the finest Holsteins in the world all added up to one of the most special events of the year, World Dairy Expo. I’ve looked forward to Expo each year since I was a young girl. The promise of grilled cheese and seeing friends that lived far away always had me counting down the days until this showcase! Years later, I get excited about the exact same things! I knew that experiencing Expo as royalty this year would be an interesting change, but I didn’t realize how simply amazing it would be to stand on the shavings and have a part in the grand champion ceremony. Through it all, my favorite part of the show is the unwavering support that the exhibitors show each other. Each champion is greeted with thunderous applause and

Adult Association officers: President: Angela Davis Brown; Vice President: Mike Brokish; Secretary/Treasurer: Jim Parish; Directors: Shayla Danz, Erik Gilbertson, Sean Brown and Mark Weier Junior Association officers: President: Kari Brokish; Vice President: Tamra Ihm; Secretary: Ellie Ihm; Reporter: Lily Jensen The Iowa County Holstein Junior members this year enjoyed attending Junior Holstein Convention in January, participating in Dairy Jeopardy and Dairy Bowl. Our highlight of Junior Convention was when Zach Tolzman was named Outstanding Holstein Boy. Zach went on to be named a Distinguished Junior Member Semi-Finalist at the National Convention. Juniors also participated at District 3 Show, Wisconsin State Fair, Iowa County Fair and World Dairy Expo. The Iowa County adult and juniors had a few fun activities this year. We went bowling last spring and this summer we had a bonfire and cookout. At the Iowa County Fair, we hosted the All-Breeds 2-Year-Old Futurity, and the winner was MS Hi-LoValley DB Heartly (Doorman) shown by Lyndsey Roum and exhibited by Hi-Lo-Valley! the junior showmen are shown words of encouragement as soon as they leave the ring. To me, this aspect of show day is even better than the colored shavings, larger-thanlife backdrop, or world-class cattle. The camaraderie found in the barns is unlike anything else, and the atmosphere makes for a great week in America’s Dairyland. Congratulations to all exhibitors on a job well done. How special to have the supreme champion heifer and cow of the junior show both call Wisconsin home! As we shift gears from a busy fall, I’d like to remind you to get those award forms into the WHA office by November 15. Brand new this year is the WHY Leadership Merit Award. County adult leaders are encouraged to nominate up to two deserving youth for this award. Full details can be found at www.wisholsteins.com under the “Juniors” “Contests and Awards.” A favorite contest of mine has always been dairy quiz bowl. Make sure you’re getting your county teams put together. If you have a few extra kids, make sure to enter them on a Wisconsin team — this is a great opportunity to make new friends and have full access to this exciting competition! Additionally, be sure to support the junior association by purchasing a calf raffle ticket from any junior member in the state. This year’s grand prize is a calf donated by Weigland Holsteins! This dream began in April, 2013 at the Wisconsin Holstein Showcase Sale held at Great Northern. Lindsey Sarbacker was looking for a fancy show-age calf that could become a foundation cow for her. Her selection that day was a silky, black December calf, Budjon-JK Damion Eklipse-ET. Eklipse did,

indeed, prove to be a good investment for Lindsey. In 2016 she was nominated Junior All-American Sr. 3 Year Old after claiming Intermediate Champion, Futurity Winner & Res. Grand Champion honors at the District 6 Show. In 2017, Lindsay showed one of Eklipse’s daughters to Reserve Yearling Champion and Junior Champion Bred & Owned at WI Junior State Fair. In December, 2017 the Sarbackers consigned Floydholm Mc Emoji-ET to the Great Northern Holiday Sale. An impressive McCutchen from Eklipse, Emoji sold due in the spring. Shawn & Seth Nehls placed the final bid that day to add Emoji to their herd. Fast forward to August, 2019 ...Emoji wins the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity, the Nehls brothers sell part interest to La Femme Fatale and Emoji goes on to be named Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo! Yes, many dreams became reality on October 5th! Congratulations to the Sarbacker family, the Nehls family and all the ladies of La Femme Fatale!

Plan to attend the 2019 Holiday Sale at Great Northern! You might just find the cow or heifer that can make your dreams come true or at very least, make a positive impact on your herd!
