4 – Wisconsin Holstein News – October 2020

From the President - Pam Selz-Pralle Wow! What a Championship Show! The quality was amazing. The excitement and camaraderie in the barns was exhilarating. Hats off to the executive show committee, WHA staff, and volunteers for their resilience and agility in making this show happen. They were relentless in making sure every detail was taken care of and with great agility turned “lemons into lemonade” when met with a challenge that could cancel the show. We needed a show. And they made it happen. Be sure to take a minute to text, call, or send them a note of your appreciation. Exec. Show Committee: Steve Endres, Tom Cull, Sara Feldmann, Sarah Wendorf, Angela Brown, Mandy Sell, Lynn Harbaugh, Craig Krohlow, Bob Cramer Jr.; WHA Staff: Laura, Mara and Charitee.

It’s that time when the days are getting shorter, leaves are getting brighter, and harvest is in full swing. If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we can live without concerts, conferences and professional sports. It’s also been a reminder to Americans and politicians the importance of food. For Holstein breeders, it reinforced the value of a simple cow show. A time for friendly competition, but more importantly a time to mingle with “salt of the earth” people who love Holsteins.

Breeder Profile

District 7: Goers Family Dairy, LLC by Mara Budde A unique approach to breeding, a watchful eye on management and care, and continued dedication to the Registered Holstein cow keeps the Goers Family Dairy, LLC successful. The dairy, which has been owned by the Goers family for 150 years, has seen a number of changes throughout the years on all fronts. The 230-cow dairy is owned by David and Marilyn and their two sons, Jeff and Matt. The farm was purchased in 1967 from David’s parents with Jeff and Matt coming in to form an LLC in 2014. This makes Jeff and Matt the fifth generation to farm the land their German ancestors settled on in 1869. While roles, and set up, have changed on the farm over the years, both David and Marilyn remain as active on the farm as they have for the last 50. David does a lot of fieldwork but also assists with scraping the freestalls and hauling manure while Marilyn feeds calves, does bookwork and keeps the crew fed. Jeff manages feeding and helps with milking and cow care as time allows. Matt takes care of herd health, oversees the breeding decisions and AI work, milks and handles the registration part of the business. Neighbors and other family members help during busy times. Matt’s first Registered Holstein was purchased on a retirement sale of a family friend and neighbor, David Waegli. She was Waeglis Mr Sam Marge, a Mr Sam x Jolt who really gave the Goers the drive to start registering cattle again. To this day, Marge has a few descendants in the herd including Da-Lynn-Jema Linjet Maggie EX-90, her Chill two-yearold and a Lucky-PP-Red heifer calf from the Chill. “The breeding philosophy here is a simple one but lots of time goes into it. We strive to breed large framed cows with lots of width and depth, especially in the front end,” says Matt. “Sturdy legs with good mobility, well attached udders and high components are our focus here. And also can’t forget the polled!” Five years ago, Matt set a goal to breed a hornless herd of Registered Holstein cattle. “I felt with the way things were going, dehorning would

6 – Wisconsin Holstein News – October 2020

become more and more of an issue with consumers. By eliminating it and having calves born olled, it seemed like a win win situation,” Matt notes. Since Matt started using polled genetics, he believes they have really changed noting that it was at times difficult to find a polled bull that met his other breeding requirements. Each year the Goers gain another 10 to 15 percent of polled calves being born. With the addition of more homozygous polled bulls available from studs, it’s made polled calves easier to attain right out of the gate. Matt says that these days the semen they use is almost exclusively polled including Cliff PP, Herzam PP, Russ PP-Red, Macnut PP, Honda PP, AltaRex PP, AltaLux PP-Red, Notice PP and Ozark P. “These days it’s hard to pick from the variety of them all! Breeding polled has been a fun and worthwhile endeavor,” he says. Studying sires and their cow families after the latest proof run is something Matt enjoys to do with goals of adding new and improved polled genetics to the tank. Using polled genetics has also given Matt a sense of community and a lot of connections in the industry. He currently writes articles on the use of polled bulls in every issue of Polled Place, a magazine devoted to polled dairy cattle. Much of the foundation for today’s polled and non-polled Registered Holsteins at Goers Family Dairy go back to influential cows both past and present. These tend to be homebred favorites for the family. Da-Lynn-Jema Mailing Zanzabar, 2E-91, is one of these cows and was the dairy’s first homebred Excellent cow. Matt says she was one of those cows that milked well, looked good while doing it and bred back quickly. She had daughters by Roy and Ito who were both Very Good cows and added their own branches to the family tree. A number of animals in the herd today trace back to this family. These offspring are easy to pick out, according to Matt, with their black, silky hides and beautiful udders. Zanzabar’s Roy daughter had a Very Good Ernesto that was such a farm favorite, the Goers kept a Revival-PP bull from her to use on heifers.

Goers Famiy Dairy | David & Marilyn and Jeff & Matt Goers Shawano

• Number of cows: 230 • Number of acres: 550 Primary Crops Grown: Alfalfa & Corn • Average production: 85 pounds per cow per day • Ration: TMR for all ages after weaning • Type of housing: Individual calf pens graduating to pairs, then group housing in different sizes. Freestall housing after 6 months of age, sawdust for heifers, sand for cows and dry cows • Prefix: Da-Lynn-Jema and Dedication-M

An early crop of these heifers are calving in now and creating a lot of excitement on the dairy. Another cow that had left an impression on the herd was Da-LynnJema Acme Achieve, EX-92. She was the Goers’ highest scored cow to date and has transmitted her udder traits to daughters and granddaughters. In addition to the Da-Lynn-Jema prefix, Matt has a select group of animals under his own prefix, Dedication-M. One of his current herd favorites is Dedication-M Outburst-Red, EX-90, who is one of the first cows to carry his prefix and goes back to his first Red & White Holstein, Dedication-M Rudy Ohara-Red. Outburst has a very promising Rosedale Advantage-Red due in 2021 to Lit PP-Red. Another fun cow the family enjoys working with is Matt-Dari Brono Helanna-TW, VG-87 EX-90MS, and Okato Banderas Kadence. Helanna has four daughters in the herd and Kadence, who is backed by a VG Zenith x VG Outside x Ms Wilstar Mark Kandy EX-95, has a Russ-PPRed daughter. Matt’s favorite two-year-old is a polled Ammo-P from a Laurin x EX Lee x Redrose EX-96. She has a very correct Lucky PP-Red calf and was just recently serviced to Aftershock. At this time, genetic marketing is limited to selling jumper bulls. Goers bull genetics have found a place at dairies in Northeast Wisconsin and in

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The dairy makes a point to score cattle every seven to 14 months and all animals are tagged with official Holstein tags. In addition to the focus on genetics, the facilities have been changed to accommodate the herd. “Our biggest projects were building a three-row freestall heifer barn in 2004, then a four-row freestall barn for the cows in 2010, and then a double-eight herringbone parlor shortly after,” Matt says. Later in 2013, the Goers added a dry cow barn with sand-bedded maternity pens. The original barn was renovated to accommodate calves, a decision the family has grown to love. “My family worked hard their entire lives and did what they could when money and opportunities were there. They weren’t afraid to try new things and it paid off. After I graduated high school I set the bar a little higher for genetics and still have goals of building on what we’ve already accomplished,” Matt says. “Now my biggest goal is to have every member of the herd Polled with desirable type and high production.” Over the course of the 150 years the Goers family has owned the farm, it has changed greatly. Matt and his family continue to improve on their genetic and management goals while maintaining cow numbers. Matt says, “We hope the next generation will follow our lead and be successful and make their own decisions to be successful in the future.”

Top row, l-r: Da-Lynn-Jemma Mailing Zanzabar 2E-91 was Goers’ first Excellent cow; well-attached udders is one of the breeding goals that the Goers family strives for in addition to large framed cows with a lot of width and depth and good feet and legs; cows are milked twice per day in a double-eight herringbone parlor Bottom: Jeff Goers is in charge of feeding. Health management is an important part of the the dairy and feeding plays a role in that. October 2020 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 7

Hannah’s

HOT TAKE

Happy October! October has always been my favorite month. Typically we have the final days of World Dairy Expo, leaves changing color and Halloween! The last week of August brought us the Wisconsin Summer Championship Show in West Bend. Roslind and I had a fantastic time attending the Wisconsin Holstein Association All-Breeds Futurity held during the event. I had been looking forward to this event to all year and it did not disappoint. We were lucky enough to be joined by Alice in Dairyland, Julia Nunes, the Wisconsin Guernsey Princess, Haley Beukema, and the recently crowned Wisconsin Red and White Dairy Cattle Association Princess, Hannah Hensel. It was an excellent turn out! Following futurity, we had the honor to present awards to the juniors competing in the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association showmanship contest. Congratulations to all the junior members on your hard work, it was an exceptional group to watch. Days like the Wisconsin Championship Holstein Show remind me why I am proud to be a part of Wisconsin Holstein Association. Sitting ringside as some of the most beautiful animals in the state, possibly even the country, parade in front of you is an experience like no other. It was a dream come true to hand out ribbons to breeders I have looked up to for years. I am grateful to the Wisconsin Holstein Association for giving me that opportunity. The first weekend of September brought the Iowa County Futurity in Mineral Point. There were 18 cows in the futurity, the largest group I’ve seen at a futurity this year! It was such a great experience. Juniors, a reminder that various awards are due November 10, including the WHY Leadership Merit, WHY Friend, Essay, Junior Farm Trip, Junior Progressive Breeder, and Long Range Production awards. Filling out these awards is relatively simple, but can help you with future award forms like the Distinguished Junior Member application. If you know of any events coming up, Roslind or myself would be happy to attend. Fill out the form found on the Wisconsin Holstein Association website to get on our calendar.

Midwest Holsteins, Fall 2020 - 13

Midwest Holstein Roundtable Stone-Front Farm Lancaster, Wis. 1350 cows 2000 tillable acres Andy and Lyn Buttles, daughters Christina (13) and Kayla (10), Elam and Barbara Buttles Levi Martin is the Herd Manager Becky Oglesby is the Calf Manager Christina, Lyn, Andy and Kayla Buttles

The Midwest Holsteins editors again teamed up for another roundtable of Midwest Registered Holstein breeders. This time around the topic revolves around “if I could do it all over...” where we asked the breeders to reflect on how their farms have changed over the years, what they did that created a very positive result and what they would have changed if they could go back. We hope this roundtable gives you insight into your dairy operation. Stone-Front Farm Farm Information: We milk 1350 cows and operate 2000 tillable acres of land. We breed for productive, well-balanced cows that have great longevity. Basically cows that we love to milk. Farm History: The Buttles family came to Wisconsin in 1842 and has been farming here ever since. Stone-Front originally started near Waterford in Racine County and then moved to the current location near Lancaster in Grant County in 1997. What were some things that you’ve done over the years that have resulted in positive results? As our farm has grown the number one positive thing we have done is hire good people. Having a great core group of team oriented, outstanding employees who enjoy working with cattle has been the key to our success. Over the years anything that we have done to improve the cow comfort on our farm has also been very positive. If you take good care of your cows, they seem to always take care of you. Over the last 20 years I think that much of our increased milk production has come from increased cow comfort. What are some things you’ve done that didn’t result in a positive outcome? Any time that we do something around here “Because that’s the way we have always done it” we seem to get ourselves in trouble. It is so easy to get caught up in the daily grind, that sometimes you forget to take a step back and really think about what you are trying to accomplish. Plus, things change so fast these days you really have to be ready and willing to make changes to keep up with the fast pace of the world. If I could do it all over I would...There are many things that we could have done different. I think that one of the biggest changes would be our farm layout. When we moved to Lancaster, we were 14 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2020

milking about 80 cows and did not plan on ever growing to our current size. I think that had we known where things were going we would have laid out the buildings, feed area and manure handling differently so we could have grown more efficiently. Managing employees is another area that we wish we had more training in earlier on in our growth. The cows were always easy to manage and where are strengths were, but we were not as ready to manage our employees. We should have spent more time on developing our people skills and have made many mistakes managing employees over the years. With the changing labor market, you just hate to lose good employees. As a leader it is more important to get it right than to be right. We would also take more time to go over our financial information. We should have made time to fully understand and utilize our financial information much sooner. We should have monitored our cost of production more closely, so we could have made better fact-based decisions. We made too many decisions based on pure instinct and emotion. It is also much easier to make good marketing decisions if you have a solid understanding of what your cost of production is. In the future knowing your financials and having a strong marketing program is going to be very critical. In hind sight, there are many other changes we might have made, but they were more based on how things have changed in the industry and the world. We always try to worry about things that we can control and not to spend too much time on the things that we can’t control. We feel that these are the areas that we were in full control of, and that we could have handled better.

Le-O-La Holsteins Peosta, Iowa 85 cows, 150 youngstock 160 acres The Demmer Family

Le-O-La Holsteins

interest by dairymen across the nation.

Farm Information: Le-O-La Holsteins is a Registered Holstein herd owned by Rick and Kathy Demmer who currently milk 85 Registered Holsteins with around 150 young stock on the farm. In addition, the Demmer family farms 160 acres of land that they use to produce feed for their livestock. One of the primary focuses for us is breeding high quality cattle backed with a deep pedigree to make a more sustainable and profitable animal. To go along with this, we partake in embryo transfer and in-vitro fertilization. Rick and Kathy live on the family farm where Rick takes on the primary day to day operations at the farm. Their sons, Kyle, Riley, Royce and Regan all work off the farm in addition to working on the dairy when they can, assisting in all areas. They also have three daughters who live off the farm.

What were some things that you’ve done over the years that have resulted in positive results? First and foremost, the most positive thing we have achieved is raising four boys who all bring their own talents and interests to Le-O-La, without them we wouldn’t have achieved all that we have so far. Another aspect we have seen bring a lot of success to our farm is investing in new genetics, such as Regancrest Debbie-Jo-ET EX-92. Debbie Jo was a cornerstone kind of cow for us, she put 40-plus bulls into AI and created an embryo market all over the world. She was truly a once in a lifetime cow that introduced us to many people across the globe. We also had the opportunity to invest in more of the Dellia family. On top of these new genetics we always focused on breeding the next generation to improve our herd, through this we did develop a sire, Le-OLa Mogul Gambler, who at one point was one of the top Udder Composite bulls of the breed. Most recently, we have invested in two cows who have brought a lot of fun and success to our family, first being Robin Hood Pretty In-Red-ET EX-94. In 2018 she was named Grand Champion of the International Red & White Junior Show for our son Regan. Second, is a cow we own in partnership with our son Kyle and his wife Laura, Bill Rauen and Stone-Front, TJR Arieta McCutch 2256-ET EX-95, a McCutchen from Ms Ariel Moman Arita EX-92 (Manoman) from Ms Atlees Goldwyn Ariel EX-92. Currently, her son Artist at St Jacobs ABC has been having many great looking daughters hit the ground.

Farm History: Leo and Stella Demmer, Rick’s parents, started farming in 1947 and moved to the farm where Rick and Kathy currently operate just south of Peosta, Iowa in 1956. As time went on their main focus became the dairy cattle while they managed a few other animals simply to feed their family. In 1964, Leo decided to start artificially inseminating his herd which sparked an interest in genetics with Rick and some of his brothers. In 1968 they bought a cow named Lilly, the first registered cow on the farm. To this day, she stands to be one of the most influential cows in the herd. The recent Intermediate Champion of the Midwest Fall National Show, Le-O-La Arvis Lauralee VG-88 is 13 generations back to Lilly! As Rick and his brothers started to take more of a management role on the farm and as technological advancements hit the dairy industry, Rick and his brother Joe decided they wanted to make better quality cattle for the show ring in addition to animals who could produce good quality milk as well. In 1983, they decided to try embryo transfer for the first time. From the first flush, they received 10 heifers. This in turn sparked a passion for high quality cattle and has remained the vision at Le-O-La from that day forward. By 1990 the Demmer family was regularly attending the Iowa State Fair and other shows throughout the Midwest. In 1991, Rick and Kathy transitioned into ownership of Le-O-La Holsteins where they built onto the original barn and in turn doubled their herd size over the next few years. Their focus continued to be developing deep pedigreed, high quality cattle that brought appeal to dairymen nationwide. As Rick began to develop their breeding program, he began to invest in new bloodlines and took their herd to a level that gained

What are some things you’ve done that didn’t result in a positive outcome? Overall, we have made the best out of nearly every situation we have been faced with. We are blessed with a great family who pitches in when times get tough. I guess if there is one thing we don’t get the greatest results in, it would be our milk check but we know we are not the only ones in this boat and just keep hoping for the markets to turn If I could do it all over I would…. There really isn’t much I would change, we have been able to develop a deep pedigreed herd with many Excellent and Very Good cows, we have four boys who all have developed a passion for the industry and are proud of what we have been able to achieve to this day. When I look back and now look at our current goals, I guess I could say I wish we would have acquired more land around us, giving more opportunity for farm growth and possibly investing in some technology sooner. MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2020 - 15

Olmar Farms Sleepy Eye, Minn. 150 cows 700 acres Brian and Jill Nelson

Olmar Farms Farm Information: Olmar Farms owned by Brian and Jill Nelson. We milk 150 cows and raise all of the replacements as well as bulls to sell as breeding bulls. We run just under 700 acres of land. Farm History: I (Jill) am the fifth generation on our family farm, so obviously many things have changed over those years. Brian and I joined the farm in 2002 and bought it in 2008. At that time, we were milking 85 cows in a 1960s style side opening parlor and the cows were housed in freestalls, tie-stalls and an open freestall shed. In 2010, we moved into a new freestall barn and parlor. Since then we have remodeled our old tie-stall barn to accommodate calves. We’ve also done a lot of small things to help improve labor efficiencies, the most noticeable being revamping the entire feeding system. What were some things that you’ve done over the years that have resulted in positive results? The new barn and parlor was a huge improvement in cow comfort and people comfort. Having all of the milking cows in one location was a great change. Putting in a fully insulated ceiling and tunnel ventilation were two of the best decisions we made when designing our barn. The added cost was offset within two years by a decrease in feed required to maintain the cow’s body temp in the most extreme weather temperatures. Our intakes are consistent year-round and milk production will decrease only on the hottest summer days. Having a consistent environment is also very nice to work in. We don’t have the frustration of working in a frozen barn with frozen manure and waterers. In the summer, the barn is much cooler then outside… although there is only so much that can be done with heat abatement. Our feeding system changed considerably. We went from a stationary TMR that required eight different conveyors, an old chuck wagon and many hours to get everything fed. We can now feed twice as many animals in half the time using a TMR wagon and making a few adaptations in the old freestall barn which now houses our dry cows. We have added several fans in our calf facilities and continue to improve air movement in those barns as time and money allow. The addition of headlocks for most of the animals on the farm has been a huge benefit as far as treating and handling all ages of animals. It’s much easier on both animal and human. One thing we did that helped us early on in our farming career was to set up a Dairy Diagnostics team which helped immensely with the farm transfer planning. Writing everything down and 16 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2020

having all of the parties concerned sit down together to sign everything was critical for a smooth transition. It is too easy to forget the small details that can later become issues. This is also important to share the basic details with any siblings who are not farming so there is no question about the transition plans in the event of someone’s death. I can’t emphasize enough how important a farm transfer plan is to the continuation of a farm. I know too many horror stories of farms lost and families torn apart. When the time comes, none of the other things will matter if the farm is gone because there wasn’t a plan. What are some things you’ve done that didn’t result in a positive outcome? When we moved into the new barn we decided to try feeding a one group TMR twice a day to the two higher producing groups. We had trouble finding the right DMI to fit the two groups and had trouble with the fresh two-year-olds the most. So we quickly switched to mixing each group individually and feeding once a day. That has worked out much better. The other issue we had, which ultimately took over most of our lives until we could figure out the problem, was that of stray voltage. In our situation the stray voltage came from NEV (Neutral to Earth Voltage). This sort of voltage originates from the primary side of the electrically distribution line and even though we had “blockers” installed on our electrical service, the voltage went through the earth to find its way to our grounds and back into our barns. If I could do it all over I would…. I generally don’t look back and think much about what I should have done. Most of the things we would have done differently while building our barn we would have done if we had unlimited resources. As it was, we stayed within 0.3% of our original budget. I credit that completely to Brian being

the general contractor and staying on top of things. The things we would have done differently if we had a larger budget would have been to add the two additional parlor stalls per side. We installed a double-eight and made it big enough to go to a double-10. We also would have liked to have some sort of a cement treatment where the feed is. It would be better for us to have a few more tunnel fans. Right now, we are at the minimum air flow for a tunnel ventilated barn. The final two things we would have done different would have been to install in-floor heat in the cement pad that leads to the manure pit. The manure in the barn never freezes, but once we push it outside, it becomes a problem. We also would have doubled the size of our stacking slab. It doesn’t last as long as it was supposed to be designed for, so we have to haul out more often. During the building process, we would have taken a bit more control over the concrete crew. They were amazing at their job, however, they had such a large crew that we had to make little

decisions on post placements and slopes, etc. more hastily then we would have liked. Usually the cement was on its way when they would tell us their plan for the day. During the design phase, they also pushed hard for us to change our barn design and specifically the floor slopes to make the cement work easier. I am so glad we didn’t compromise on that. Having the floor slope both toward the center of the barn and away from the backs of the stalls has made a big difference in the cleanliness of the cows. The other things we would have done different if we knew then what we know now would have been to insist on bringing threephase electrical service to the farm, despite the utility’s assurance that single phase would be more than sufficient for our power needs. We wouldn’t have trusted the utility’s testing methods for determining if we had stray voltage. We would also have located the service far away from all of the barns and install an isolated transformer. I cannot over estimate enough how this would have impacted every aspect of our farm and lives.

Farm History: Starward Farm started when Harold and Lillian Gremel purchased the farm, buildings and acreage around 1953. They started with 230 acres, Brown Swiss and Holstein cows and some hogs. They changed over to all Holsteins and started purchasing registered cattle. Over the years they added more land. In the 80’s Walter and I also started purchasing land. Today, my father-in-law is 10 years retired. Eric joined us seven years ago, after he graduated from college. He owns several animals and together, we continue to develop our registered herd. What were some things that you’ve done over the years that have resulted in positive results? Positive results have come from handing the cow management and breeding over to Eric. We recently classified and the numbers tell the story. Updating facilities and building a new calf barn also have shown positive results. Not only does this add to animal comfort, and care, but focuses on working smarter not harder.

Darwin Sneller with his grandsons, Tanner and Reid Sneller

Starward Farm Sebewaing, Mich. 95-100 cows, 125 heifers 900 acres Darwin and Kathy Sneller

Starward Farm

What are some things you’ve done that didn’t result in a positive outcome? Keep to your values when breeding cows. Once in a while we succumb to the publicity, and promotion of advertising and try something new when purchasing semen. The results are mostly disappointing. Dairymen like different types of cows, so stick to what you like. Secondly, when we came to the farm in 1982, we should have done more to set up a working agreement with the in-laws. We just jumped in and starting working without really thinking about 40 years down the road. If I could do it all over I would…. Find a way to take more time off for the kids’ activities. The side effect of having a small farm, and a small work force is there are not enough people to cover all the work. Now, we have family living in other states. We still find it difficult to find time to travel.

Farm Information: Starward Farm, Darwin Sneller, involved are Kathy, my wife; Walter Gremel, brother-in-law; Eric, son and his wife, Cassie. One full-time employee, Justin Gemmell. We have around 95 to 100 milking and dry cows with 125 heifers. We farm 900 acres consisting of corn, soybeans, wheat, alfalfa and sugar beets. MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2020 - 17

MISS SAMBO Design Kristy Roose • Black Gold Lea McCullough photo

Black Gold never produced a lot of daughters but the 3 she had were all good young cows, which scored high VG as 2-year-olds. However, she continually produced bulls to use on our heifers, which resulted in a large number of nice young milky 2 & 3-year-olds when we sold the Jersey cows. It wasn’t until her last son was in service that we realized we should have collected more of them. However, we did collect the last son, Brenhaven Big Guns, a Hired Gun out of Black Gold. Semen available, the reports on the early daughters has been fantastic.

Obituaries Everett R. Benedict

Everett R. Benedict, 81, of Bristol, passed away peacefully, on Thursday, July 2, 2020, at his residence. He was born on July 23, 1938, to the late Roland D. and Emily (Stonebreaker) Benedict in Kenosha. He was educated in Wilmot and graduated from Wilmot High School. On August 31, 1968, he married Pamela Odell in Bristol. Everett was a lifelong dairy farmer who considered himself a steward of the land. He took great pride on being a fifth generation farmer and was a nationally recognized Registered Holstein Breeder. Everett was a member of the Bristol United Methodist Church. He enjoyed music, playing guitar, banjo, and singing vocals in polka bands for 60 years, the Jolly Nites, Travel on Trio, and several other bands. First, he played American Legion ball for many years, managing the Central Wisconsin Championship Team for Wilmot and also played fastpitch in Kenosha County up until he was 50 years old. Everett was also very involved with the Dairyland Race Track. He owned many greyhounds and raced them through Greyhound Central Kennels at the dog track for many years with his daughter Andrea and his son-in-law Larry. Everett is survived by his loving wife Pam, his children Jori Rafel of Hillsboro, Randy (Jaime) Benedict of Sharon, Steven Benedict of Bristol and Andrea (Larry) Osborne of Laramie, WY, He loved spending time with his six grandchildren Ty, Cadence, Garrett, Reese and Randy’s two children and his brothers Lowell and Norman Benedict. Jack Jinkins

Dr. John “Jack” W. Jinkins, 77, of Dodgeville, formerly of Montfort, died suddenly on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at his home. He leaves his beloved wife of 56 years, Donna (Allen) Jinkins, and his children Laurie Jinkins (Laura Wulf ), Chuck Jinkins (Jill Armbruster), Julie Derr (Ron), Todd Jinkins (Tobey) and Karri Jinkins (Hooman Majd); seven grandchildren, Sasha, Ava, Wulf, Olivia, Eliza, Carson and Khashayar; his sister Mary Kunzelman and brother Mark Jinkins, as well as many brother and sister in-laws and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and his brother Tom Jinkins. Jack was born on September 7, 1942 in Dodgeville, and was raised in Mifflin the oldest of Charlotte and Kenneth Jinkins. He married the love of his life on March 1, 1964 after being in the last graduating class from Livingston High School. He and Donna set off for Ames, Iowa, where he graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1967. He began a successful veterinary career joining Drs. Carr and Klindt at Montfort Veterinary Service in Iowa County. It’s rumored that before Jack began his new job in Montfort word travelled through town that Dr. Carr had hired some young veterinarian, and they’d have to see how it worked out. It did, because “Doc Jinkins” spent 35 years building friendships and gaining respect amongst the farmers of Grant and Iowa counties. Along with raising his family in Montfort, Jack was also an active member of the community as Chairman of the Montfort Methodist church board and as a member of the Montfort town board. Jack had a strong interest in Registered Holstein cattle, purchasing his first in 1971. In 1978 he established Hardwood Farm, which became well known and is now run by his son, Chuck. He maintained a daily involvement in it until his passing. He spent countless hours developing his herd and farm. He was known for saying “experience is always the best teacher, but sometimes the ‘cost of tuition’ is high.” Jack believed his

practical dairy farming experience benefited the clients he served, but was secondary to the knowledge he gained from these clients, which benefited his dairy. He had a great respect for farmers and was proud to count generations of area farm families among his many, many friends. After retirement, Jack and Donna built their dream house in Dodgeville. They travelled regularly to visit their children in Boise, Nashville, New York and Tacoma. Jack became a board member and strong advocate for Bloomfield Manor. He strongly believed that senior citizens should have a high-quality place to be taken care of in their later years. Jack visited Montfort daily, playing cards with a group of his friends every morning at the local gas station, and was known to appear before their 5 a.m. opening time in anticipation of winning up to 28 cents in any given day. In the last few years, Jack and Donna fell in love with Hyde Mill, so they bought and remodeled a historic home associated with the Mill. While Jack retired from veterinary practice in 2002, he never quite retired from farming or from his commitment to his family, friends and community. Donna and his family are heartbroken over his death but filled with joy as they recollect his life and stories. Walter Siemers

Walter “Wally” Siemers, age 82, of Cleveland, went home to his Lord and Savior on September 3, 2020. Wally was born on January 12, 1938, in Milwaukee to the late Walter J. and Hildegarde (Trieck) Siemers. He attended a one-room schoolhouse on Mineral Springs Road in the township of Meeme, before graduating from Kiel High School in 1956. Wally then attended the UW-Madison Farm Short Course before owning and operating Siemers Holsteins for over 50 years. Walter married the love of his life, Marlene (Hagenow) Siemers on October 7, 1961. They met on Sunday at the Manitowoc County Fair in 1959. They were happily married for 58 years operating the family farm together, side-by-side. He was baptized and a confirmed member of St. John’s UCC Church in Schwarzwald where he served as a Deacon and was active on many committees. Later, Wally became a member of the Christ Community Church of Sheboygan where he also served as a Deacon and Elder. Wally was a “farmer’s farmer.” He especially appreciated the Holstein cow, exporting hundreds of cattle worldwide and selling bulls to A.I. He maintained a very productive, yet type-focused herd and helped many young farmers acquire the “better kind.” A highlight of his farming career was hosting Farm Progress Days in 1997. He received Wisconsin’s Master Agriculturalist Award in 2017. Walter loved to sing. He began his singing career in his church choir at age 14. He sang for many weddings and funerals throughout the area. He sang for many years with the Plymouth Barbershop and the Men of Harmony. His favorite song was “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” Wally was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife, Marlene, he is survived by four children, Sherry (Jack) Siemers-Peterman, David Siemers, Dan (Janina) Siemers, and Paul (Jennifer) Siemers; seven grandchildren, Crystal Siemers-Peterman, Kathryn Siemers, Jordan Siemers, Connor Siemers, Joshua (Emily) Siemers, Jacob Siemers, and Lauren Siemers; sister, Ruth Ann (Charles) Kolb; and brother-in-law, Carl (Ruth) Hagenow. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in Wally’s name. Wally’s family would like to thank the staff at Harvest Home of Howard’s Grove who cared for him with kindness and compassion while he has resided there for the last three years. Joann Brewer

Joann C. (Lange) Brewer, age 76, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on September 15, 2020, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Born August 9, 1944, to George and Helen (Klitzman) Lange in Monroe, Joann was a 1962 graduate of Albany High School. She went on to attend UWWhitewater and UW-Platteville before graduating from Green County Teacher’s College. Joann was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Glenn R. Brewer on August 7, 1965 at the United Methodist Church in Evansville. He preceded her in death this past February. After her college graduation, Joann taught 3rd and 4th grade in Monticello and then taught Kindergarten in Cassville before starting a family. Lifelong friends were developed during college and her teaching years that continued to be a very special part of her life. It was also while living in Bloomington that Joann and Glenn would make many lasting friendships including the Meyer family who would become like family still today. After the birth of two daughters, she and Glenn purchased a farm in November 1973 back in the Albany area next to the farm where she grew up. They added a son in 1975 and began to develop a herd of Registered Holsteins under the prefix of Glenn-Ann. Raising the kids on the farm was important to both of them and they always enjoyed watching the kids show cattle through the years. Joann was always willing to make sandwiches to pack for the District Holstein Show or brownies for dairy judging nights the farm hosted. Her love of farming started with 4-H and as a young girl growing up on a dairy farm and made for a perfect farmer’s wife. As the kids grew, she found some time to go back to substitute teaching when time off the farm allowed. As the years passed, the farm needed her to be the go-to person and she found her days filled with all things farm. Running errands now instead of milking, feeding the crew, baling hay, feeding the calves and taking care of all of the barn cats. She 20 – Wisconsin Holstein News – October 2020

loved her animals and especially her cats. Joann was an avid sports fan. She loved watching the Milwaukee Brewers but she planned her entire day around a Wisconsin Badger Men’s Basketball game and nothing was going to keep her from watching them! She loved to be outdoors, tending to her flowers and filling her bird feeders and always had time for a beer with friends at the end of a long day. While raising the kids and farming with Glenn, she also found time to be in softball and bowling leagues, traveling to State Bowling tournaments for many years. She was loved by so many people, many of them to this day still called her “Ma” or “Auntie Jo!” Her life became complete four years ago when she finally became a Grandma. She loved her grandchildren so much and was lucky to have them close enough to see daily. Family time was made easier with the kids all involved on the dairy farm and living within a mile of each other. She enjoyed the evenings when everyone just came to eat supper that she always had made. She’s survived by her children, Tami (Brian) Behnke, Traci, Tony (Nicole), and her two very special grandchildren, Jaxson Kenneth and Kinslee Jo Brewer. She is further survived by brother-in-law and sister-inlaw, Gary and Colleen Brewer, sister-in-law Jan Brewer, nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, brother Kenneth in 1964, father-in-law and mother-in-law Fay and Valliere Brewer, step father Alvin Joranlien, and brother-in-law Roger Brewer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established later to support the local school and other organizations. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Huie and the amazing nurses at The Monroe Clinic Oncology Department, and Dr. Andrew Baschnagel at the UW-Hospital Radiation/Oncology department for everything these last almost 4 years and the caring staff at Agrace Hospice who again helped us through these past few weeks.

Ready, Set, Show! - JACs host statewide clinics for junior members Submitted by Nicole Broege, Southeast JAC With COVID-19 pandemic forcing us to cancel our annual Cow Camp, the JACs still wanted youth to have the opportunity to learn new showing skills and connect with fellow Junior Holstein members. So, we decided to hold four fitting and showing clinics, one in each region of our state. With that decision, Ready, Set, Show! was born! Southwest JACs Nathan Daniels and Hannah Hockerman held the first clinic in Elroy on July 19, with 11 members in attendance. Northeast JACs Kenna Coffeen and Elise Bleck had 22 attendees at the Shawano County Fairgrounds for the second of our four clinics on July 23. In Neillsville on July 26, JACs Hannah Nelson and Emma Dorhorst welcomed 24 members to their Northwest Wisconsin clinic. At the final clinic on August 9, 27 members joined Southeast JACs Matthew Gunst and Nicole Broege at their clinic in West Bend. When planning our clinics, the JACs decided on three main topics we wanted to cover: washing, clipping, and showmanship. Each clinic began with a washing demonstration by a JAC, who highlighted the importance of using the right soap, what areas of the body to give extra scrubbing attention to and emphasized the value of a thorough final rinse. Next was the clipping presentation. While clipping an example animal, a JAC showed the members where to begin clipping and discussed the difference between various blades for their clippers. They also reminded the members to blow up their animal’s topline many times, both before the show and during the clipping process. The JACs also aimed to address some common errors made by young fitters, such as proper preparation and clipping of belly hair and how to avoid leaving clipper lines on your

26 – Wisconsin Holstein News – October 2020

animal. During both the washing and clipping demonstrations, Katie Coyne was on hand with additional pointers and to explain how and why you would use some of the different Weaver Livestock products. The clinic attendees were able to put these newly learned skills to the test, and worked in teams to clip an animal. While the kids were clipping, the JACs checked in with each group, answered questions and offered guidance to those needing a little extra help. When the teams completed their clipping, everyone walked around to see what was done well by each group and what improvements could be made. This was an excellent hands-on learning experience for the juniors. Following lunch, Katie Coyne showed the clinic attendees how to improve showmanship and herdsmanship skills. The members were then split into three groups by age. Each group attended small stations about a variety of topics, including individual showmanship coaching from Katie, halter tying, packing a show box, how to build a good bedding pack and what to do during barn duty. Katie judged three classes of showmanship at each clinic, and every showman received constructive criticism to help them grow in their showing ability. The JACs would like to thank everyone who helped make the clinics possible, especially Katie Coyne with Mill Wheel Show Clinics for all her guidance in the planning process and assisting us at each clinic; and Weaver Livestock for their donation of various show supplies. We hope all who attended enjoyed the clinics and went home new improved skills. We hope to see you at one of these events next year.
