From the President - Craig Carncross Unfortunately, our herdsman/part-time feeder decided the grass was greener in the construction world last month. We searched for a replacement and found a young man eager to be a general farm laborer. This replacement, who we will call Joe, was by no means herdsman potential from my initial assessment, but he filled a hole and we would begin trying to find someone within to give more responsibilities once Joe was trained. Joe had a working buddy to shadow for the next couple weeks and off we went. Things seemed to go pretty good except for one poor gate that will never be the same again. Finally, the day came for Joe to be on his own. A little bit on the weather for Joe’s first day helps set the stage for what was to come. We got about 5 inches of rain over 72 hours, but things cleared up and it was warm and sunny on Joe’s first Saturday alone. Things started off fairly routine. Joe was getting the cows up and cleaning stalls while Danielle milked in the parlor. Like Joe was trained, he snuck over to scrape dry cows while pen two got milked and that’s where he forgot to chain his first gate. Next thing we knew, 60 dry cows were running around everywhere. Joe showed he had a quick first step as he and every other able body chased cows around the entire farm through the yards and the waterways (see note on weather above). The dry cows were chased back into their home, the parlor was now out of cows and Joe was a sweaty mess. Next, Joe left the gate to pen three open while he tried to get cows quickly to the parlor since it was now a race to get done for the milkman. Pen three cows took off down the center of the barn and headed for the wide-open overhead door that was up for the next batch of feed. Luckily, Kyle was coming with the mixer and stopped the 20 or so cows that were sprinting for their freedom. Things did not get better even with Kyle’s quick save. Pen four and the fresh cows

got mixed up, another gate met its fate to the skid steer with you know who driving and needless to say the milkman got a long nap in our driveway. The more we tried to help Joe, the more flustered and nervous he got. The good news was Sunday went a lot better for Joe and Monday he started training again to see if this was salvageable. How does this bad day on my farm connect to WHA? It probably doesn’t ….much. I felt Joe knew better and was singled handedly trying to destroy my farm. My farm seemed to run successfully every other day of the week and this one person seemed to be challenging every standard operating procedure we had on the books. Wisconsin Holstein is a membership organization. Members elect the board of directors to represent them and their views and the board then tries to offer guidance to steer the organization and provide and support the staff that is the day-to-day driver of the association. Members and their opinions matter. How those ideas are brought to the attention of the board and staff can have significant impact for the future of the organization. My time on the board has seen many changes and challenges. The worst challenges to deal with though are always the false rumors and negativity towards the organization that fuels division and mistrust. Every member makes their experience of being part of this organization their own and this can be a positive one or a negative one. It is your choice. One thing is for certain, if you have ideas on how to make WHA better we are all ears, so please speak up. The WHA board just concluded our fall meeting. There are so many things that we have to celebrate as an organization. The National Convention was an overwhelming success. We see modest continued on page 6

It’s been awhile since a column from the staff appeared in the Wisconsin Holstein News. In this issue you will find a great Midwest Holsteins section with advertisements from the best herds in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. Whether you are reading this at home or picked it up from our booth at World Dairy Expo, we hope you enjoy this issue. Since I haven’t had a column since April, I’d like to take some time to thank everyone involved in the planning and execution of the 2019 National Holstein Convention. This event was simply incredible and was well received by those in attendance. Thank you Corey and Krista for your leadership, vision and drive to make this event so high caliber. A special thank you to the promotions committee who helped us showcase this event from public relations to signage to historical displays and everything else in between. Your skills and expertise were greatly appreciated by the WHA staff. Last, but not least, thank you to all committees, volunteers and attendees. So many people came together to make this the event of 2019 and for that I am grateful. Look for features in future issues of the News for exclusive content highlighting this “legendairy” event. continued from page 5

improvement in the association’s finances in all its businesses including the Foundation and the Publications division. Event after event for the year seems to run smoothly and the comments are overwhelmingly positive. The board discussed the merits of rehiring the Sales and Membership position and as an organization we feel that rehiring this position will be best to take this organization into a bright future. Could we leave this position open? Maybe, but we do not think this fits our goals and programming for WHA. We have a great staff who continues to rise to the challenge of each and every event and directive we throw at them and this is not the time to take our foot off the pedal. The board feels it is quite the opposite in fact. Your board of directors puts in a lot of time and effort to try and make sound decisions for WHA. Is every decision unanimous? 6 – October 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News

Absolutely not! That is ok as these discussions and different points of view make WHA stronger. Does this mean members should run around and tell everyone the board of directors is imploding? Absolutely not! That is just simply not true. Different points of view representing a wide array of interests and the different farm models that make up our membership is expected. Respecting the hard work of your volunteer board is also expected. Remember, we are always looking for new board members and it is a great way to get involved in your organization. Your board of directors sees a bright future for WHA and for you, our members. We are only a phone call away if you have ideas. The mid-year report is very positive, let’s keep this moving forward. Here’s to a successful fall harvest. Craig

Obituaries Robert Snow

Robert “Bob” Snow, 86, of Sparta passed away Aug. 30, 2019. Robert was born Feb. 1, 1933 to Harold and Edith (Ebert) Snow in Sparta. He graduated from Sparta Senior High School in 1951. He received the Wisconsin State FFA degree in 1950 and the American FFA degree in 1954. Robert started farming in 1951 and never really retired. Chester White pigs were his first project, but dairy cows were his passion. Robert’s prized cow, Snow-N Denises Dellia became a well-known Holstein in the dairy cattle world thanks to Regancrest Farms. Robert played an active part in the lives of his nieces and nephews and their friends. Robert also liked to read westerns and play cards with his dairy buddies, as well as with family. He was a member of the Sparta United Methodist Church, Odd Fellows, and local, state, and national Holstein Associations. Robert is survived by brother, Kenneth (Shirley) Snow of Sparta; nephews Ryan (Kathleen) Snow, Sparta; Lance (Debra) Snow, Byron, Minn.; Bradley (Linda) Snow, Sycamore, Ill.; and niece Mari (Will) Duchaj, Hampshire, Ill.. Also, great nephews and nieces, Jason Snow, Jilian Foxen, Abbey (Matt) Jeanquart, Adam (Julia) Snow, Derek Snow, Bret Snow; great-great nephews and nieces: Dalton (Becky) Snow, Logan Snow, and Lily Snow, Jacob Foxen, Madelyn and Marissa Jeanquart and Owen and Avery Snow; and great-great-great niece, Brinley Snow, as well as many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, great-niece Becky Snow, great-great nephew, Carter Snow, as well as aunts and uncles. Randall Geiger

Randall Andrew Geiger, age 69, of rural Reedsville, went home to our Lord after passing away on Monday, Sept. 9, 2019, at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, Milwaukee. He was surrounded by his wife of 50 years, his two children, and their spouses following an 18-day hospital stay due to complications of a heart attack. The lifelong dairyman began that final journey from earth to heaven side-raking hay on the family’s 152-year-old farm. A true farmer, he left this earth with his farm boots on. He entered this world on Jan. 24, 1950, in Green Bay, the fifth of thirteen children born to the late Monica (Kopidlansky) and Norbert Geiger, Sr. For two years, he attended Sacred Heart Seminary in Oneida and later graduated from Brillion High School Class of 1968. He earned accreditations from the Badger Business School and Fox Valley Technical Institute. On Aug. 1, 1969, Randy married Rosalie Pritzl at St. Mary’s Church in Reedsville. A unique member of Holy Family Parish, Randy was baptized at Holy Trinity of Kasson; received first communion, confession, and confirmation at St. Mary’s in Brillion; was married at St. Mary’s in Reedsville, and his mother went to school and his parents were married at St. Patrick’s of Maple Grove. Those four churches formed Brillion’s Holy Family Parish. Dairyman, servant leader, mentor, family man, and devout Christian described Randy’s life mission. Following his father’s

untimely death in 1966, Randy began a 50-year career dairy farming as he and his wife, Rosalie, bred and developed a prized herd of Registered Holsteins. In 1994, Ran-Rose Cream Spirit amassed lifetime production of 342,000 pounds, then earned the title of Wisconsin’s lifetime milk production leader. Together, Spirit and her three direct maternal descendants made 1.3 million pounds. That achievement stands in rare company in global dairy cattle breeding circles. Over the decades, the herd accrued Progressive Breeder of Registry awards, over a dozen Progressive Genetics Awards, Gold Medal Dams, and Dams of Merit recognitions from Holstein Association USA. Twelve times a cow from the Ran-Rose herd earned Grand Champion or Reserve Grand Champion honors at the highly competitive Manitowoc County Fair. He was a supportive, loving, and committed husband, father, and grandfather. His joy was in his family, and he wouldn’t miss an opportunity to cheer them on in sports, academics, and in day-to-day living life to its fullest. At age 27, Randy began a lifetime of service as a community leader in his town and in the dairy industry. He was involved in and served a number of organizations including Manitowoc Milk Producers Cooperative, FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative, Cattleman’s Beef Promtion & Research Board, National Milk Producers Federation and the Rockland Township Smart Growth and Land-Use Planning Committee. For the past year, Randy was employed part-time in the member-services division for FarmFirst. He was also a lifetime member of Holy Family Parish and St. Mary’s Parish and served as a confirmation sponsor to over a dozen young people. Survivors include his wife, Rosalie Geiger of Reedsville; a son Corey (Krista Knigge) of rural Mukwonago; and a daughter Angela (Nate) Zwald and their three children, Mary, Allison, and Zachary, all of rural Beaver Dam. Randy’s surviving siblings include Sandy (Michael) Siehr of Mishicot; Norbert (Colette) Geiger Jr., of Brillion; Michael (Karen) Geiger of Greenleaf; Martha (Earl) Haag of Larrabee; Monica (Tony) Schmidt of Brillion; Paul (Karen) Geiger of Forest Junction; Albert (Kay Lynn) Geiger of Brillion; Mary Ann (Steve) Piepenberg of Chilton; Simon (Rhonda) Geiger of Brillion. Also surviving are a sister-in-law Betty Geiger and brother-in-law Dennis Schmitz both of Chilton; a sister- and brother-in-law Annie and Robert Krueger of New London; and a brother-in-law Ken Konop of Brillion. Randy is further survived by 35 nieces and nephews from the Geiger Family and 10 nieces and nephews from the Pritzl Family. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Gerald Geiger; brother James Geiger; sister, Barbara Schmitz; sister-in-law Jacqueline Konop; and brother-in-law Elmer John Pritzl. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Norbert and Monica, and his father- and mother-in-law, Julia and Elmer Pritzl. There were a number of special people in Randy’s life. Helping young people get started in agriculture was perhaps his proudest accomplishment next to his wife and children. To that end, he holds Dan Dvorachek, Josh Krahn, and Jonathan Petersheim as his “adopted farm sons.” Many other young people learned viable life lessons at Randy’s “farm classroom.” Randy’s entire family would like to thank the medical teams at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital of Appleton and the team at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center for giving Randy every final chance at extending his earthly life. Breeder Profile

District 7: Rolling Hills Dairy, LLC by Mara Budde Kewaunee County is one of the most densely populated cow area of Wisconsin. Among the farms in the county is Rolling Hills Dairy, LLC. Siblings Kevin (Debbie) Gaedtke, Scott Gaedtke and Kim (Gaedtke) Kroll, along with 30 employees, keep the more than 1,500 cows happy and healthy. Roughly, 10 percent of the heifers and cows are high type Registered Holsteins that the Gaedtke and Kroll kids exhibit at all levels of competition. Around 2001, the family purchased their first Registered Holstein, Cheeseheads Hershel Faye-ET VG-86. As kids, Kim, Scott and Kevin were active in showing grade Holsteins but as adults they wanted to continue showing and wanted a way to get their kids involved as the dairy grew. In their first year exhibiting at World Dairy Expo, the family placed first in the spring yearling class in the Red & White with Tip-View Skyler-Red-ET. The following year in 2005, Brock Binverse had the honors of working with Skyler, who placed first and first junior in the junior 2-year-old class and was named Senior Champion and Grand Champion of the Junior Show. Skyler would go on to be scored EX-92. The family has purchased several cows over the years to increase their Registered Holstein numbers. Many of the Gaedtke and Kroll show heifers go back to these cows that their parents’ invested in. Most recently, Kim’s daughter Mercedes Kroll, 15, led Gaedtke Diamondback Asia to Junior All-Wisconsin Spring Yearling honors. Asia’s granddam, Milksource Goldwn Autumn-ET VG-86, is a full sister to Milksource Goldwn Africa-ET EX-95, and is still in the Rolling Hills herd today. Two other animals that did well for the family this year are Gaedtke Solomon Palmer, a fall calf, and Gaedtke Solomon Perfect-ET, a summer yearling. Both heifers placed in the top five at the Wisconsin State Fair and were first bred and owned and pulled out for Bred & Owned Champion where they were Honorable Mention in the calf and yearling divisions, respectively. Palmer and Perfect, Solomons from an EX-91 Windbrook then an EX-92 Atwood, will make their debut at World Dairy Expo this fall. The Gaedtke’s have also had success with descendants of StransJen-D Tequila-Red-ET EX-96. A notable granddaughter the Gaedtke and Kroll kids exhibited was Gaedtke Diamback Tia-Red-ET, 2017 Reserve Champion Bred & Owned Heifer in the Wisconsin State

Fair Junior Holstein Show. Tia’s dam, Ms Stanshome Target-Red-ET, was purchased at one of the first Quest for Success Sales and has continued to provide foundation of show animals for the dairy. Like their other foundation cows, Jim-Jamdl Advent Event-Red gave the family another launching point into Red & White Holsteins. Event’s descendants, Gaedtke Jordy Eden-Red and Gaedtke Jordy Edith-Red, were named Champion Bred & Owned Calf and Reserve Champion Bred & Owned Calf at the 2019 Wisconsin Junior State Fair. Eden then took Reserve Bred & Owned Champion Heifer overall. Their dam, Gaedtke Absolute Ellie-Red is scored EX-91. Among success at local, district and state shows, an exciting moment for those at Rolling Hills Dairy, and especially Kim came when Gaedtke Addiction Daisy-Red was placed first junior and sixth in the winter calf class in the International Red & White Show at World Dairy Expo in 2018. With all of this success, Kim notes that working with these homebred animals is the kids’ project. “This is their project, one they can grow with it as with our own breeding. Overall, this is ours,” she notes.

Cousins, Mercedes (15) and Jadelynn Kroll (11), Hailey (18) and Kiley Gaedtke (15), and Alexys (16) and Alisa Gaedtke (13) work with their project animals year-round. Justin (20) and Johnathan Gaedtke (18) are involved in other aspects of the dairy while Blake Kroll (13) is involved in the swine project. Hunter Guilette, a cousin of the Gaedtke family, enjoys the opportunity to show a heifer at the Wisconsin State Fair and District Show. Jadelynn, Mercedes and Alexys will also be exhibiting animals at World Dairy Expo this fall. “It’s a very big project for them to work with these animals and it keeps them busy,” Kim says. Especially as the dairy grew and work on the farm became more specialized, the family believes their Registered Holstein project animals keeps them involved in the industry and continues to provide learning experiences for the kids. Daily farm responsibilities are overseen by Kim, Scott and Kevin, while Kevin’s wife Debbie handles the office work. Scott and Kevin came back to the farm after graduating high school while Kim attended beauty school. Following her graduation of the program she worked at a salon but continued to help on the dairy. The milking herd is housed in freestall barns with mattresses and sawdust bedding as well as in a freestall with sand bedding. Milking occurs three times per day in a double-20 parallel parlor. The farm was established in 1885 and grew from 17 cows to 80

cows in the 1980s and kept growing from there. All animals are raised by the family and employees. Calves start out in hutches where they are fed milk replacer three times per day until weaned at six to seven weeks. They are then moved into group housing. Show heifers have separate housing where they receive a show heifer pellet and a variety of hay types to build rib and accelerate growth. On the commercial Holstein side of their farm, Kevin focuses on breeding for milk, feet and legs and fat and protein. Sires like Jordy, Solomon, Doorman, Altitude, Jacoby, High Octane, Defiant, Diamondback, Addiction-P-Red and Warrior-Red are used on the Registered Holsteins. Type is a major consideration when choosing sires and aAa is also used. Kevin believes that has made an impact in their breeding programs. In the dairy community, the Gaedtkes and Krolls are passionate about promoting dairy and showing the public how farms, especially large family dairies, operate. The Kewanee County Breakfast on the Farm was held at Rolling Hills Dairy in 2006. The family is keen on helping educate the Kewaunee County 4-H wherever and whenever they can. Kim notes that each year they open their barn doors for the Kewaunee county youth judging practice.

EXPERIENCE

Careers in the dairy industry require basic knowledge about biotechnology, business, genetics, nutrition, health, waste recycling and environmental protection. Our students gain this knowledge and more though their course work and active learning labs.

Ranked among the top U.S. research universities by the National Science Foundation, UW–Madison’s Big Ten benefits complement the small-school atmosphere experienced by Dairy Science students. Dairy Science undergraduates participate in all kinds of “beyond the classroom” experiences during their education. 79 percent of students complete an internship or field experience and 64 percent complete a mentored research project.

dysci.wisc.edu

UW–Madison’s proximity to dairy farms, agribusinesses, and events–such as World Dairy Expo, provides Dairy Science undergraduates with unique networking experiences and valuable handson learning.

The Dairy Science faculty includes internationally recognized specialists in nutrition, genetics, lactation, reproduction, and dairy herd management. Cows on campus, the Dairy Cattle Center is located within one block of dairy classroom buildings, providing access to cows during lab sessions.

Career opportunities include: Veterinary medicine; animal nutrition and consulting; livestock reproduction; dairy genetics and breed associations; dairy herd management; laboratory research; information technology; agricultural Extension; business and finance; sales, marketing and Agri-communications

THE DOMINANCE CONTINUED IN 2017

Dairy judging is strong at the University of Minnesota,

so strong that its teams have placed first overall in six of the nine major contests in 2015, 2016 and 2017 held at: the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). Furthermore, over the past 8 years in these 3 contests, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st overall in 12 of the 24 contests. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. If you’re considering a career in dairy, consider the U of M. In addition to our

highly successful judging teams, you can be part of the Gopher Dairy Club, where more than 100 student members gain experience and industry contacts through activities like an all-expense-paid 10-day trip to California in January for seniors. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority. Learn more today at ansci.umn.edu

MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2019-15

33rd Annual WHA Futurity Judge Mandi Bue of Freedom, Wis., placed 12 outstanding young 3-year-olds on Saturday, August 10 at Wisconsin State Fair Park during the first All-Breeds Futurity. Since 1987, the Wisconsin Holstein Association has hosted an annual Holstein Futurity at the Wisconsin State Fair, but this year was the first year all seven dairy breeds were eligible to show. Taking top honors and Best Udder was Floydholm MC Emoji-ET, exhibited by Shawn and Seth Nehls of Hustisford. They took home a $1,500 check sponsored by Compeer Financial and $50 from CentralStar Cooperative for Best Udder of the Show. Emoji, previously owned by Lindsey, Ashlyn and Cole Sarbacker, had received a complimentary entry into the Futurity three years ago after being named Reserve Junior All-Wisconsin Spring Calf. Shawn and Seth Nehls purchased Emoji as a bred heifer in 2018 and were excited to have the opportunity to exhibit her in the Futurity. Second place and Best Bred and Owned was Milgene Defyin Jackolantern, exhibited by the Hildebrandt family from Hustisford. The Hildebrandt family was awarded $750 sponsored by International Protein Sires and the Best Bred and Owned award sponsored by Lirr Farm, the Nigh family. Rounding out the top three and the production and combined fat and protein winner was Crestbrooke A Cabernet-ET exhibited by Kyle Natzke of Fond du Lac. Agropur sponsored the $500 third place award and Brian Greenman, Rural Mutual Insurance Agent sponsored prizes for the production awards. The first place junior was Dreamfix Summer Fling exhibited by Landon and Mylie Wendorf, Dawson and Kylie Nickels, and Christian Sachse of Ixonia. They won an award sponsored by Angela Davis-Brown of Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys and a cash prize sponsored by the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. The Nigh family of Lirr Farm also sponsored the Best Junior Bred and Owned award. This award went to Colton, Ashley, Justin and Katie Brandel of Lake Mills exhibiting their Milking Shorthorn, Brand-New Iron Man Allis. Although the cows are the stars of the show, the exhibitors dress their best in competition for the Best Dressed awards. The Best Dressed Junior was Carly Strauss of Lake Mills, who won an award sponsored by the Barron County Junior Holstein Association. Brett Hildebrandt of Hustisford was awarded Best Dressed Male and received an award from Robert and Karyn Schauf. Yvonne Preder sponsored the Best Dressed Female award, which was awarded to Kayla Wright of Johnson Creek. The night was led by the Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, Kevin and Peggy Coffeen of DePere. They announced the winning cows and introduced the dignitaries that were present as well as sharing Wisconsin dairy facts with those watching from the stands. Representing the sponsors were Jill Armbruster from Compeer Financial, Ron Sersland of International Protein Sires, and David Hitner from Agropur. Royalty from across Wisconsin also attended the event and helped present awards including Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess, Lauren Siemers; Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Attendant, Mikayla Endres; Wisconsin Brown Swiss Queen, Natalie Roe; Alice in Dairyland, Abigail Martin; and Wisconsin Fairest of the Fairs, Meghan Buechel. The Wisconsin Holstein Association All-Breeds Futurity would not have been possible without the generous donations from our major 16 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2019

Ryan & Lance Kamm - Nova Registered Holsteins, New Richmond UFM-Dubs Eroy VG-87 GMD, DOM by Kenni Bores After a barn fire in February of 2000, the Kamm family of New Richmond had to rebuild their entire herd. Later that spring, brothers Ryan and Lance, with their dad as an advisor and consultant, looked for good cows and deep pedigrees to rebuild their herd. “Our dad spent most of his life adding Holsteins with good pedigrees and favorable type to his herd. He always valued well-made cows that produced well through multiple lactations,” Lance said. This led them to the purchase of UFM-Dubs Eroy in 2005, who ended up being one of the best cows they added to their herd. Eroy is a Gold Medal Dam and Dam of Merit, along with being nominated for Global Cow of the Year by Holstein International. There are multiple members of her family tree that have been AllAmerican nominees. She has had 43 daughters by 14 different sires scored; of these daughters only two scored below 80 and 95.3 percent of them are scored Good Plus or better. The most prolific of Eroy’s daughter is Nova-TMJ Golden Echo VG-88 DOM, who already has similar statistics with 29 out of 31 scored daughters being Good Plus or better, with eight being Excellent. Nova Registered Holsteins has had Eroy daughters by Goldwyn, Shottle, Marion, Elegant, Damion, Defiant, Advent, Durham, Atwood, Man-O-Man, Sanchez, and Mac. They also still have a few embryos left direct from Eroy by Goldwyn, Baxter, and a few other bulls. “The Eroy family flushes extremely well,” Lance said. “When Echo was in peak demand, we flushed her 13 times in just over a year and she averaged 15 usable embryos per flush, with most being exported.” Some countries that they have exported to include Britain, Germany, France, Australia, Russia, Argentina and many others. They are currently having great success flushing two members of the Eroy family, Nova-TMJ Atwood Estra EX-92, who recently made 35 #1 Doormans and 32 #1 Avalanches. They are also flushing NovaTMJ Bradnick Evade EX-93, who recently made 25 #1 Denvers and 20 #1 Unix embryos. “Over half of our herd traces back to Eroy which has helped our

bulk tank consistently average around 85 pounds of milk with a 4.4 fat and 3.5 protein test on two times a day milking with mostly homegrown feed,” Lance said. “Eroy and her family have consistently transmitted extreme fat percent while continuing to produce large volumes of milk. It is common for family members to make 30,000 pounds of milk with a 4.5 percent fat and 3.5 percent protein.” The Kamm family milks 130 Registered Holsteins along with around 30 Registered Jerseys. They are also raising 220 replacement heifers. They have an RHA of 2x 24,854 with a 4.1% fat and 3.3% protein. Lance and Ryan run 1,100 acres of crops with 250 acres of alfalfa and grass hay and the rest split equally between corn and beans. The majority of the feed is homegrown. Eroy left a lasting impression on the Nova Registered Holstein herd with her genetics influencing herds across the globe through her daughters and male offspring in AI.

2019 National Holstein Convention Sale scores a touchdown The 2019 National Holstein Convention Sale certainly lived up to the convention’s theme, Making Legendairy Leaps! This year’s sale took on a different format with the sale divided into two halves, just like a football game with the genomic lots selling in the first half and live lots selling in the second. The event began at 4 p.m. on June 26 at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center, Appleton, with a tailgate party featuring a cheese extravaganza highlighting Wisconsin artisan cheeses. Before the genomic sale, convention attendees were able to sample a variety of Wisconsin cheeses and fare and socialize before the evening’s festivities. Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin provided the appetizers and spread. Approximately 1,600 Holstein enthusiasts were in attendance for the 2019 National Holstein Convention Sale, making it the most highly attended event of the convention. As the large crowd gathered in Exhibit Hall C, Lisa Behnke introduced the Sale Team as well as Barron singer and songwriter, Chris Kroeze, who was a front-runner on the popular TV show, The Voice. Kroeze performed the Star Spangled Banner to kick off the first half genomic sale. Featuring 27 high GTPI females and the rights to an IVF flush, the genomic sale kept everyone’s attention with the high demand for these chart-topping opportunities. Leading off was Lot 1, TerraLinda Tahiti 10343-ET, the highest NM$ heifer to ever sell at public auction. When the gavel dropped at $300,000, Progenesis/Semex, Guelph, Ontario became the owner of this +1109NM Tahiti daughter who was consigned by Terra Linda Dairy, Mike Santos, Tulare, Calif. Another impressive consignment, Lot 2, T-Spruce Crimson 12938-ET +2912G, consigned by T-Spruce Holsteins, Arnie and Kris Gruenes, Richmond, Minn. commanded a great deal of attention with her A2A2 status combined with high GTPI, +1085NM$ and +1221DWP$. Peak Genetics, Watertown, paid $197,000 to add this #29 NM$ female of the breed to their program. Select Sires Inc., Plain City, Ohio placed the final bid of $135,000 to add the #1 Milktime in the breed for NM$ to their breeding program. Lambrecht Milktime Amelia-ET +2898G, +1033NM$ +2386M +105F +82P and A2A2 was consigned by Lambrecht Dairy LLC, Jeff Lambrecht of Kewaunee. The genomic selection offered was well received with buyers coming from Wisconsin, California, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, 20 – October 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News

Petitclerc Doorman Sapphire-ET was the high seller of the second half type sale. The final bid of $24,000 was placed by Siemers Holsteins of Newton.

Texas, New York, Michigan and Maryland as well as Ontario. Halftime dinner was served in Exhibit Hall B with over 700 served a buffet of brats, hamburgers, chicken wings and all the fixings you’d find at the stadium or tailgate party. Lisa Behnke once again welcomed everyone and introduced the Sale Team as a number of new comers joined the event. Chris Kroeze’s performance of God Bless the USA made everyone proud to be an American. When the second half kicked off, the live animals paraded across the stage designed to look like a football field. This portion of the sale featured high type individuals from some of the most prominent, deep-pedigreed cow families of the breed. Claiming high selling honors during the second half was Petitclerc Doorman Sapphire-ET, consigned by Grant Vosters of Freedom.

Our Association had a strong and successful show string of 40 head at this year’s Outagamie County Fair in July. Many of our members exhibited with Outagamie County Junior Team at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis in August and enjoyed the great experience of the dairy show again this year. We thank all sponsors and supportive parents for their help this year! Shawano County 2019 Adult Membership: 44; Junior Membership: 30 Adult Association officers: President: Steve Schneider; Vice President: Andrea Moeller; Secretary: Julie Vomastic; and Treasurer: Justin Hintz, Waupaca; Board Members: Lynn Harbaugh, Sara Harbaugh, Cody Moeller, Ashley Mikle, and Brandon Smith Junior Association: We had a very successful year with our judging program with a good amount of participation for both the practices and the district contest. The highlight of the year was our junior team, who won the district contest and they were the state contest as well. Team members included: Hailey Zernicke, Abby Ard, Jacob Harbaugh and Logan Harbaugh. We had a great turnout at our district show for both showmanship and to participate in the show. Several kids also went on to show at State Show with some great results for Shawano County. We had a group of 19 kids and 27 animals represent our county at Wisconsin State Fair with some good results. Five dairy bowl teams headed to the Junior Holstein Convention. We had one rookie team, two junior teams and two senior teams compete. All did very well, and each team won at least one round. The highlight was our senior team who won the contest and represented WI at the National Holstein Convention. Team members include: Mason Jauquet, Carmen Haack, Summer Henschel and Ben Schmidt. Shawano was well-represented at the Junior Convention which was hosted by Manitowoc County at the Blue Harbor Resort. In addition to our Senior Dairy Bowl team, other juniors who will compete at the National Convention include: Jacob Harbaugh, second place in both Speaking Contest and Dairy Jeopardy, junior division; Sydney Gwidt, third place Speaking Contest, intermediate division; Maddy Gwidt, third place Speaking Contest, senior division; Shawano County won the Bell-R-Ring contest for the second year in row! Other juniors were honored with various awards throughout the weekend and everyone had fun and learned a lot. Many thanks to Heather Jauquet and Jena Betley for organizing a concession stand at the Quest for Success sale. Funds raised from this event 26 – October 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News

will be used to help fund national convention expenses as well as other junior activities throughout the year. We have a great group of juniors in Shawano County and we have a lot to be proud of! Thank you to everyone who helps support this group throughout the year. We are looking forward to a great year in 2020! Adult Association: The big event for our adult association this year was organizing our annual All-Breeds Futurity held during the Shawano County Fair on Saturday, Sept. 1. Several of our members were also very involved with the National Holstein Convention that was in Appleton in June. Several were involved as tour hosts, committee members and volunteers. It was great event for all involved. Looking ahead, Shawano county is gearing up to host the 2020 District 7 Show and we look forward to another great year ahead for our juniors. Waupaca/Waushara County 2019 Adult Membership: Waupaca - 34, Waushara 7; Junior Membership: Waupaca - 10, Waushara - 6 Adult Association officers: President: Alan Cordes, Waupaca; Vice President: Dan Peterson, Waupaca; Secretary: Terri Hamm, Waupaca; and Treasurer: Justin Hintz, Waupaca; Board Members: Carla Gunst, Waushara; Jim Sattler, Waushara; Matt Ewald, Waushara; Grady Auer, Waupaca Autumn greetings from the Waupaca-Waushara Holstein Association! Although our weather doesn’t seem much like fall just yet, Autumn is right around the corner. Everyone knows what that means... World Dairy Expo! It has been an amazing year for the Waupaca-Waushara Holstein Association! Our year began as 14 of our talented juniors attended the Wisconsin Junior Holstein convention in Sheboygan at the beautiful Blue Harbor Resort in January. Caleb Hamm served as JACs for this region and our kids were able to volunteer at convention and help out the JACs with contest duties. We had two junior dairy bowl teams competing as well as two senior teams. One of those junior teams made it to the final round of the dairy bowl contest. Also, there were six juniors who participated in the dairy jeopardy contest, three individuals in the prepared speaking contest, three juniors entered in the folding display, craft and photography contests as well. Our junior advisor, Brenda Long, was nominated and received the WHY Friend award. Convention was tons of fun for the kids and chaperones! The 33rd Annual Waupaca-Waushara show opportunity sale was held on March 16, 2019. Our sale yielded some truly beautiful calf and heifer consignments including our highest selling calf Lot 1 MS MVG Avalanche Beauty-ET, Consigned by Majestic View, Shore and Connery bringing $2,700. This year’s sale average was $1,152 on 35 lots. This year’s recipient of the Waupaca-Waushara Calf project scholarship was Elijah Hamm. Elijah purchased a beautiful fall calf, Scientific Solo Darina Rae, consigned by Scientific Holsteins. The juniors held a Culver’s fundraiser night at the Waupaca Culvers on March 25. The kids helped to deliver orders, clear tables and clean up and earn 10 percent of sales from the evening. It was an excellent way to promote the Holstein Association. For the fourth year our association has partnered with the Waushara County Dairy promotion to sponsor a showmanship clinic. This year’s clinic was held at Wilstar, Willis and Carla Gunst’s Farm in Poy Sippi. We were honored to have Bob Hagenow and Nick Uglow as our presenters this year. There were 40 kids in attendance and this educational day included hands on learning and loads of fun. Our counties had lots of outstanding representation at the World Dairy Expo, district show, Wisconsin State Fair, Holstein Futurity, Waushara County and Waupaca County fairs. We are proud to sponsor awards and prizes for our Holstein showpeople.

Lauren Jessica’s

Princess Journals Hello, Holstein Friends! What a busy few months we’ve had advocating for Registered Holsteins all over our great state. County futurities and special events have dotted the past few weeks, bringing amazing opportunities for agricultural education. It’s hard to believe that our time as royalty is winding down. An extra-special event for me was the cheese reception at the Sheboygan County Fair. At this event, fair royalty spend a few hours at the fair’s dairy education tent, talking to consumers of all ages and assisting in the milking of Sheboygan County’s premier dairy ambassador, “Addie” the cow. A sweet young lady was my sidekick all morning long, sharing her love of dairy cattle with everyone that came through. This young lady passed out stickers, milked “Addie,” and answered questions about her time on her family’s dairy farm. I couldn’t help but see a piece of my younger self within her- here’s to hoping that she runs to be

Wisconsin Holstein Royalty one day! Later that afternoon, I was able to attend Sheboygan’s Holstein Futurity. Mike Austin kept the audience on their toes with plenty of jokes, the cattle were prepared phenomenally, and the exhibitors looked quite classy as they exchanged barn boots for evening gowns. Best of all, every single seat in the arena was filled and countless supporters of Holstein cattle stood around the entrance of the show ring for the entirety of the event! What an amazing reassurance that our work in promoting our beloved Holsteins is worthwhile! As Junior Holstein Convention comes closer and closer, I’d like to remind you to purchase your calf raffle tickets from a junior member of our association. The sale of these tickets helps to put on amazing junior events and the grand prize is a Registered Holstein heifer calf donated by Weigland Registered Holsteins! Also, I encourage all junior members to step out of their comfort zone at this year’s convention, January 3-5, in Stevens Point. Whether it be the speaking contest or photography, quiz bowl or a folding display, convention weekend is always a great time to build new skills and expand upon old ones. As always, if there are any fall events that you’d like me to attend, request forms can be found at www.wisholsteins.com under the “Our Association” tab. Best of luck to all exhibitors during the upcoming fall shows, and all farmers as they battle Mother Nature during this harvest season. All the best, Lauren Siemers October 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 27
