Obituaries

Lyle K. Opsal

Lyle K. Opsal, age 72, of Blue Mounds Township, passed away on Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, at his home— his deeply cherished Opsal’s Ridge—after a long and courageous struggle with progressive supranuclear palsy. He was born on March 20, 1948, the first day of spring, in Madison, to Boyd Lyle and Sybilla Irene (Bernards) Opsal. As a child, Lyle was a student at the one-room Erbe Country School. Later, he attended and graduated from Mount Horeb High School where he met his love and partner in life, Deanna Hendrickson, whom he married on July 28, 1965. Together, they invested their lives in caretaking the rolling hills, productive pastures, and dense woodlands that makes up Opsal’s Ridge Dairy Farm. Lyle was a lifelong dairy farmer and breeder of Registered Holstein cattle. He was especially proud to be honored this year by the U.S. Holstein Association as a 40-year member. While Lyle devoted much of his time to the farm, he always found time to enjoy other life passions. With friends in his earlier years, he was known as a spectacular pitcher on his slow pitch softball team and he also enjoyed tossing a hook ball down the bowling alley. He was a

Packers and Badgers fan, but he was particularly enthusiastic about a night out on the town with his wife to watch the University of Wisconsin Women’s Volleyball team play at the Field House. Lyle loved country music and read western novels voraciously. And, he found tremendous joy supporting his children and grandchildren as they showed Opsal Ridge cattle at local, county, state, and national shows. With laughter and affection, his family will remember the small but precious things that made Lyle dad, grandpa, and husband: his quick and witty oneliners; his commitment to ice cream as a food group; his fondness of the scent of Old Spice After Shave; and, especially, his charming, easygoing, and welcoming smile. Lyle is survived by his wife, Deanna Opsal; children, Troy Opsal, Travis (Leslie) Opsal, and Tara (Todd Riddle) Opsal; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, James (Barb) Opsal; sister, Shirley (Bob) Mazanet; brothers-in-law, Jeffrey (Kate) and Larry (Marie) Hendrickson; and nieces and nephews. He was welcomed, upon his passing, by beloveds who preceded him in death: his son, Thad Opsal; parents, Boyd and Sybilla Opsal; in-laws, Homer and Avis Hendrickson; brother-in-law, Jerome Hendrickson; and nephew, Trevor A. Hendrickson.

Breeder Profile

District 3: Nobland Farms by Mara Budde Family is an important part of Nobland Farms in Lancaster. The 400-cow dairy is owned by Troy, Jaime, Drew, Ainsley and Macie Noble and Troy’s parents, Dennis and Rita. The herd and farm facilities have grown and changed since the farm was established in 1909 but the enthusiasm for the Registered Holstein remains consistent. When Troy was young, the family milked in a 60-cow tie-stall barn. With small expansions happening through the years, the family started milking in their new double-12 parallel parlor with a new freestall facility in March 2017. The older facilities have been repurposed to house calves, heifers and dry cows. In his first year in 4-H, at around nine years old, Dennis won the dairy’s first Registered Holstein at a local show. From that point, Registered Holsteins have always been a part of Nobland Farms. The sixth generation, Drew, Ainsley and Macie, have also found joy in the registered business breeding their own cattle and exhibiting at all levels of competition. Nobland Avalanche Heartache-TW is one of these animals. She was Nominated Junior All-American Fall Yearling in 2018 and her Red and White twin, Nobland Avalanche Heartbreaker-Red-TW, was first Red and White Fall Calf and Reserve Red and White Calf Champion of the Wisconsin Junior State Fair in 2017. Both are now among the milking herd and have scored Very Good as 2-year-olds, Heartache at VG-87 and Heartbreaker at VG-86. These two cows are daughters of an animal that the Nobles say have been influential in their herd, Nobland Apple J Hustle-Red EX-92. This Mr Applejack-Red-ET (Redliner x Apple-Red) daughter comes from a line of many Very Good and Excellent dams. Hustle herself has been shown successfully but her greatest impact on the farm has been through her offspring like Heartache and Heartbreaker. As a 3-year-old, Hustle calved with a set of Ammo twin heifers, again one Red and White and one Black and White. Nobland Ammo HotStuff-Red was honored as Reserve Junior Champion Red and White at the Youth Dairy Classic and first Junior Bred and Owned Red & White Winter Calf at World Dairy Expo in 2018.

Around 15 percent of the Nobland herd consists of Red & White Holsteins. Nobland Defiant Erica-Red EX-90 has been another influential cow in the herd and was successful in the ring as a heifer. She was Junior All-Wisconsin Red & White Summer Yearling and Honorable Mention Junior All-American Red & White Summer Yearling in 2016. Erica has three daughters, two reds and one VG-86 Diamondback 2-year-old. 2019 was also a successful year for the Noble kids with Nobland Rev-Me-Up Dots-Red earning the Honorable Mention Junior AllAmerican Summer Yearling title. Fast forward to the present. For Ainsley, 2020 proved to be a successful show season even with a number of shows being cancelled. Her winter calf, Nobland Addison Dixie-Red, claimed some banner titles and did well at all levels of competition. Her list of winnings is impressive and includes Junior All-Wisconsin and third Winter Calf at the Wisconsin Summer Championship Holstein Show, Reserve Junior All-Wisconsin and fourth Winter Calf at the Wisconsin Championship Red & White Show, Junior Champion titles of youth shows Delco Youth Classic and Grant County Summer Showdown, and Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show at the District 3 Holstein Show. These animals are a testament to the Noble’s breeding goals. “We try to breed for long lasting, healthy cows that can produce a lot of milk in their lifetime,” Troy says. Their goal with management and breeding is having a herd average of more than 30,000 pounds per cow. Additional examples of their breeding include Nobland Durham Babe EX-93, who made a lifetime record of 300,000 pounds with four lactations in a row over 44,000 pounds. Her granddaughter, Nobland Fever Barbie EX-93, was a high producing cow that the kids had much success with in the showring. Both of these cows have been influential in the herd. Some of the sires currently being used include Altitude-Red, Radio, Summerfest, Addison, Select, Hanford, Analyst-Red, and

Warrior-Red. The goal is to use good Type bulls without losing production. With expansion plans slowing, the Nobles are looking forward to hopefully offering show calves for sale. They are also in the process of building a show heifer barn. To increase genetic progress, Troy and Jaime would like to start using IVF and embryo transfer. In addition to the dairy, the Nobles operate a 90Troy gives a tour of their parlor to a group of second cow crossbred beef cow grade students. herd, where they raise and fatten all those calves. Holstein steer calves are raised on the farm until they are 500 pounds at which time some are sold as feeders while others go into their own feed lot to be finished out. Off the farm, the entire family is active in dairy-related organizations and activities. Troy and Jaime serve as Grant County

Junior Holstein leaders and they help coach the county’s judging and dairy bowl teams. For many years Dennis has been the main dairy superintendent at the Grant County Fair. He was pivotal in starting the Parade of Champions to recognize dairy youth as well as the Supreme Champion and Supreme Junior Champion awards. Ten years ago he created the Master Showmanship contest to bring dairy and livestock youth together. Nobland Farms also hosts the Platteville second grade classes with the help of the Platteville FFA. At this event, they go around to stations and learn about many aspects of farming. The Nobles plan to keep their herd around the same size. Future plans hinge on whether or not their children want to return to the farm after college. Drew is currently a freshman at Southwest Technical College; Ainsley is a junior at Platteville High School; and Macie is in eighth grade at Platteville Middle School. “If the kids choose to take the path of coming home to the farm, we will make sure they have the option to do so,” Troy says. While the Noble family takes great pride in many accomplishments spanning the generations, they feel their greatest accomplishment is watching the youngest generation exhibit bred and owned animals at state and national shows. It’s been a joy to watch the kids meet and form lasting friendships with youth from all over the state and nation.

Nobland Apple J Hustle-Red EX-92 has been a cow that has been influential at Nobland Farms. Her daughters have been Nominated All-American and have done well in the showring.

Macie showing Nobland Denver Koolwhip, a fall calf, at the 2020 Wisconsin Summer Championship Show. Macie and Koolwhip also took part in showmanship where she was third place 12 and under showperson.

Ainsley shows Nobland Rev Me Up Dots-Red at the 2019 International Red & White Junior Show where she placed third junior and 12th in the the open class.

Drew and Nobland Avalan Heartache-TW took sixth place at the 2018 International Junior Holstein Show as well as best junior bred & owned. November 2020 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 9

About Joyful

Cow family information and how you came to own Joyful. Joyful was a September Storm out of Howard Home RMK Jena-Red VG86 (Redmarker) owned by David & Yvonne Preder and Rodney Bohnoff. I acquired Joyful just after she was named Junior Champion at the Midwest Spring Show. What impact did she make on your future in dairy as well as in Red & White Holstein breeding? Joyful has became the foundation to my Red and White herd. Joyful is the matriarch of the herd that I have today which includes five daughters, Joytime, Jumpn, Jingles, Judy, and Rejoyce. The Joyful family has descendants that have influenced many junior careers as she did mine. What show winnings does she have? Grand Champion, International Red & White Show 2009 Supreme Champion, WDE Jr. Show 2008 Grand Champion, International Red & White Show 2008 Junior Champion, Grand International Red & White Show Open and Junior Shows 2006 Unanimous All-American R&W in Fall Calf 2006 Unanimous All-American R&W Senior 2-year-old in 2008 Unanimous Junior All-American R&W from 2006 to 2009 Res. All-American R&W Senior 3-year-old 2009 What descendants do you have from Joyful today? The Joyful family has become the foundation for the herd I have today. We have one Destry daughter out of her at the farm, ReJoyce, who is due to calve in December 2020. We also have several family members with up to five generations of Joyful behind them in their pedigree that we are still showing and working with today. We also have a cleanup bull who is a Debonair out of Joyful. About Stephanie and St-yle Holsteins

What is your background? Farming is in my blood as a fourthgeneration farm owner. My grandpa, Ron, bought me my first Holstein cow at a very young age, Wishing Well Mata VG-87. I took her daughter to World Dairy Expo in 2001 and stood 33 out of 33 in the Holstein show. Regardless of the placing, that sparked my passion for showing and it has been a hobby since. Farm and herd information: In 2015, I purchased my 15-acre dairy in Belmont where my parents, Kevin and Julie, and I milk 50 head of Holsteins and Red and Whites. We still have many other solid foundation cows in our herd that we work with every day, but our two favorites are the Joyful and Savage-Leigh Alexee-ET EX-90 families. My parents are the heart and soul of the farm, my role is nothing compared to theirs. My dad cares for and milks all the cows. My mom cares for all the show heifers and the calves. I work fulltime off the farm as a Regional Sales Manager for Waikato Milking 10 – Wisconsin Holstein News – November 2020

Equipment and am at the dairy as needed as well as working with the show heifers and cows. We all still consult together about breeding and other decisions we need to make on the farm. How did you get involved with the Red & White Breed? It took me many tries to find exactly what I wanted. I went from Guernseys to Jerseys, Holsteins and Brown Swiss before I finally decided to try working with a Red and White. I finally got my heart set on a Red and White after falling in love with a paint horse and at age 12 deciding that horses weren’t for me, I should just get a Red and White. After that I purchased Wilsey Redman Ruby-Red and then Glad Ray K Fantasia-Red followed by Joyful. Reds just became an addiction that does not seem to go away. My mom tells me that Red and Whites and I seem to go together because we have a similar attitude, but I’m not sure what she really means by that! What kept your passion for Red & Whites going? With the few purchases I have made, I’ve been able to produce a solid herd of cows that continue to produce the offspring that have the type that I like to see. The three red cows I have invested in Ruby, Fantasia, and Joyful all have unique stories and have created friendships, and memories that I cherish forever. These cows have been the highs and lows of life for all of us at ST-YLE since we trekked across the Canadian Border the day before it closed to pick up Ruby, about lost Fantasia at the All-American Dairy Show, and the countless memories we have had with Joyful.

Air Fryer Cheese Curds Recipe from Wisconsin Cheese. For more visit wisconsincheese.com. Equipment needed: Airfryer Ingredients • 1 cup all purpose flour • 3 large eggs • 2 cups panko bread crumbs • 1 tsp garlic powder

• 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper • 8 oz of fresh Wisconsin Cheese Curds - choose your favorite! • Cooking spray • Dipping sauces: marinara, ranch, sauce of your liking

Instructions: 1. Heat air fryer to 350 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with wax paper. 2. Place flour in a shallow, medium bowl. Lightly beat eggs in seperate shallow, medium-sized bowl. Combine the bread crumbs, garlic powder and cayenne pepper in another shallow medium bowl. 3. Coat cheese curds, a few at a time, in flour. Dip cheese curds in eggs, then coat with crumb mixture, shaking off excess coating between steps. Place on prepared pan. 4. Lightly spritz curds with cooking spray just before placing into the air fryer basket. Arrange curds in a single layer in the basket. Refrigerate remaining curds until frying. 5. Set timer for 5-7 minutes. Fry. Remove the basket at 3 minutes; flip curds. Cook 2-4 minutes longer or until lightly brown, crispy and the curds begin to melt. Repeat with remaining curds, starting with a light spritz of cooking spray. 6. Serve in a bowl or parchment-lined basket with sauce. Recipe Tips • Season the bread crumbs. Customize flavor of the curds with your favorite seasonings. • Select similar sized curds. Frying similar sized curds at the same time ensures that they melt and brown evenly. • Fry curds in a single layer. Limiting the number of curds in the fryer at the same time to a single layer yields a crispier coating. • Monitor the cooking temperature and timing. Since all air fryers vary by manufacturer, it’s best to take care while cooking curds. Adjust temperature and cook times as needed based on how the curds are browning and melting. 2020 - A Year in the Reds

Cybil Fisher photos

This year has been a year of new experiences for all of us! With COVID, masks, businesses shut down and political uproar, we have found ourselves treading waters we have not been in before! In the midst of challenges, there are always blessings and at Dewgood, they came in Red!

Ri-Val-Re Nora-ET VG-85

Farnear Roxy-Red-ET VG-86

From a bit of a different pedigree comes Nora. She made a great 2-year-old record and gave us: • 7HO15203 Dewgood 737 Boeing P-Red, a Webster son. He’s the #1 Red and Polled bull and is also A2A2 and 516 aAa.

From the depth of the Roxys came Roxy-Red, making a nice record and some nice Swingman sons! • 200HO12089 Dewgood Redwings-Red-ET - +2728G, NM +633, +DPR, with nice production and Type. • 566HO1336 Dewgood Ringleader-Red-ET - +2614G, a high milk Red bull with great Type.

2-01 365 36,380 3.7 1340 3.3 1189 cp

2-01 249 21,249 3.9 827 3.1 654 cp

One day a man named Peter found himself in unusual circumstances. He was walking were he never walked before. All went well until he looked at everything around him and he became afraid! In his desperation he cried out to Jesus who was right there on the water with him. Jesus rescued Peter in the middle of the storm and LATER it became calm again! We need to learn to have enough courage to ask for help in the middle of the storm when all is uncertain. That same Jesus still gives help in the storms of life! Read Matt 14:22-32, Matt 11:28-30 What a year it has been, BUT as always... Success is not what we achieve, but enjoying God’s blessings one at a time! H

appy Thanksgiving to our fellow Holstein breeders, family and all our human race! As we enter the Thanksgiving season, sometimes it seems there are so many disappointments and not so many blessings BUT if we pause a little, we can always find something to be thankful for! Here is a poem to encourage us onward.

Keeping On

I’ve dreamed many a dream that never came true I’ve seen them vanish at dawn But I’ve realized enough of my dreams, thank God, To make me want to dream on I’ve prayed many prayers when no answer came Though I waited patient and long But answers have come to enough of my prayers To make me want to keep praying on I’ve trusted many a friend that failed And left me to weep alone But I’ve found enough of my friends true blue To make me keep trusting on I’ve sown many seeds that fell by the way For the birds to feed upon But I’ve held enough golden sheaves in my hands To make me keep sowing on I’ve drained the cup of disappointment and pain And gone many days without song But I’ve sipped enough nectar from the roses of life To make me want to live on - anonymous As always... Success is not what we achieve, but enjoying God’s blessings one at a time! We’re “Moo”ving Towards Fun in 2021! Convention Notes

New dates

- This year’s convention will be Monday-Wednesday during the school break between Christmas and New Year. We will be looking for feedback on which time-frame is better for future conventions.

Registration/COVID waiver/Junior Agreement

- There will be a registration fee for the convention again this year to help cover convention expenses and rental fees. This includes anyone that will be in the facility to watch a junior contest. Because of COVID, we will need a complete and accurate list of all those in attendance - so everyone will be required to stop at convention registration to sign up, sign waivers and receive a name badge. - Junior members will need to have a parent’s signature on both the COVID waiver and Junior Behavior Agreement. Both forms will be emailed to all juniors who are pre-registered to complete before they travel to convention. - Entry to all meetings, meals, dance and events will require a wristband to verify registration starting at 2 p.m. on Monday.

Monday’s Highlights

- We listened to feedback from last year that having Dairy Jeopardy & Dairy Bowl is a lot for those participating in both. We are also starting the first day activities later in the day to allow for travel time. - Junior Forum and District Caucuses - this is your chance to bring up items for discussion that you’d like to see changed or added to Junior Holstein programming, plus meet the new JAC candidates! - Get you know your fellow members: It’s always fun to find out something new about someone. This fun mixer will help you mix and mingle and learn more about your fellow Junior Holstein members! - Hypnotist/Magician and Game Night: It’s always a hoot to see how your friends react when you get hypnotized, as long as it’s not you they’re laughing at! Friendly games will be set up to play like Corn Hole, Animal Bingo and others! - Scavenger Hunt: Throughout the convention, youth will have the opportunity to “MOO”ve around and find some fun scavenger hunt items to win prizes.

Tuesday’s Fun & Games

- It’s Dairy Bowl day! Juniors will compete in the morning, along with senior and intermediate speaking contestants. - Following the Princess Luncheon, Senior & Rookie Dairy Bowl contests will commence while senior and remaining intermediate speaking participants compete. - “MOO”ving Toward Fun Dance: Show us your “MOO”ves on the dance floor for some Tuesday night fun.

Wednesday’s Wrap-Up

- Drag your friends out of bed... winners from the Contest Room will be handed out and Bell-R-Ring and Spirit Award winners will be announced! - “MOO”tivational Career Panel: Learn more about resume building and career opportunities when this panel of diversified business men and women share their experiences working in the agricultural industry. - JAC elections and the annual business meeting - Be sure to stick around to cheer on your favorite teams in the Dairy Bowl Finals! Immediately following both contests, we’ll hold a YQCA training session to fulfill your requirements for the 2021 show season.

The Junior Holstein program has been successful because of parents and youth supporters, and this award is a great opportunity to recognize youth “friends” that have given a helping hand or gone above and beyond to aid in the development of the state’s Holstein youth. There are two divisions - 1 to 5 years of leadership and 6 years and over of leadership. Be sure to include the division that your “friend” would qualify for on the application. Stories and applications for this award should be 250 words or less and be to the state office by November 10. All applications submitted will be kept on file for three (3) years. And don’t forget to nominate youth leaders for the WHY Leadership Merit award. This award recognizes those Holstein youth who have shown outstanding leadership and active involvement at the county and local level. These individuals have worked alongside adult leaders to perform tasks that make our association stronger. They not only strive hard for their own achievement but also work well with others as cheerleaders for group success and learning for all. County/District adult leaders are encouraged to nominate up to two youth ages 14-21 for the Leadership Merit Award per year. Merit Award winners will be recognized at the Junior Convention. Nominations for this award should be no more than 250 words and are due to the WHA office by November 10. More information can be found on the WHA website under Junior Contests & Awards.

Contest Room now the “Activity Room”

You asked, we listened. We’ve heard that juniors were looking for things to do when they weren’t competing in Dairy Jeopardy or Dairy Bowl. The former Contest Room will now be the “Activity Room” and will include the former contests along with new educational and fun activities that juniors can participate in any time the room is open. Ads, photos, crafts, and more! There are a ton of opportunities for recognition at junior convention in the Activity Room. Juniors can enter the Photography, Arts and Crafts, Folding Display, and Advertising contests. Drawing & Painting and Crafts has been combined into one contest with an additional division - junior, senior and Junior Convention Princess workshop. More details to come on the Princess workshop! For rules and age divisions of these contests, check out the Junior Handbook online on the junior awards page. All contest room entries must be taken or produced since the previous Junior Convention by the junior member entering the project. Entries will be due by 5 pm on Monday, December 28. Due to low participation over the last few years, we have eliminated the scrapbook and banner contests. We do encourage groups to bring finished scrapbooks to the Activity Room to display their yearly activities.

A note from your JACs

Hello Junior members! We hope you are all doing well and that your school year is off to a fantastic start! No matter how you are attending school this fall, we hope you are starting to think about the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention. Because, while some things may be different this year, we still plan to have a fun-filled convention in Appleton this December. What are some things to be thinking about in preparation for convention? Well, on November 10th, there are multiple things due. This includes Essay Contests entries, Junior Farm Trip Award applications, WHY Leadership Merit and WHY Friend nominations, which need to be mailed or emailed to the WHA office. In addition, Progressive Breeder Award forms and Long Range Production awards are also due online or by mail on this day. You can also start to prepare for contests at the convention. Entries are still open for Dairy Bowl, Speaking Contests and Dairy Jeopardy. These contests are exciting ways to expand your dairy knowledge and public speaking abilities, all while competing against your peers. It is most definitely not too late to begin studying for Dairy Bowl and Dairy Jeopardy or start writing your Speaking Contest speech. If you are a junior member and above the age of 16, we want to strongly encourage you to consider running for the Junior Activities Committee this year. This committee is a great way for you to get more involved within the organization and develop your leadership skills. As a JAC member you will have the ability to help plan fun events for juniors, explore new opportunities and make meaningful connections along the way. If you have any questions, reach out to any of the current JACs. All of us would love to talk with you! In addition to our usual convention activities, we have added a new room! The JACs have decided to add an activity room to this year’s convention. In this room we will have tons of awesome activities for juniors to do during the convention. You won’t want to miss your chance to check out this fun new addition! This year’s convention is planned for December 28-30 at the Red Lion Hotel in Appleton. We can’t wait to see all of you there! Until then, stay safe and get ready for a great 2021 Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention! Nathan Daniels & McKenna Coffeen, 2nd year JACs November 2020 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 21

WISCONSIN MADISON

Animal & Dairy Sciences SENIOR SPOTLIGHT Name: Emma Gwidt Hometown: Pulaski, WI School: Pulaski High School Class Size: 230 Farm: Double Nickel Dairy LLC Major: Dairy Science with a certificate in Agricultural Business Management Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I decided to attend UW-Madison because of the wealth of opportunities at our disposal. I knew that by attending UW-Madison, I would be able to pursue any path within the dairy industry. What has been your most memorable college experience? Thus far, my most memorable college experience was working as one of the co-chairs for the World Dairy Expo Grilled Cheese Stand. This stand is the largest fundraiser for Badger Dairy Club and UW-Madison Collegiate Farm Bureau. For this reason, it is a large responsibility and undertaking. I enjoyed meeting our major sponsors and have gained close friendships throughout the process of planning and executing this fundraiser. What has been your favorite course? My favorite course thus far has been Dairy Science 233 and 234. Both classes are heavily focused on various aspects of dairy farm management. I felt they were a great pre-cursor to my experiences while I interned. We also had various world-renowned guest speakers which made the class very valuable and applicable. What are your future career goals? Once I graduate, I would like to pursue a career that involves working with dairy producers on their genetic and/or reproductive management programs. In recent years, dairy farms have had to be creative with their breeding programs. Working with farms to develop these strategic breeding programs is of particular interest to me and I hope to have a career focused on this in some form in the future.
