From your President Kevin Jorgensen Hello Everyone! Hard to believe that the leaves are already turning and fall is upon us. I hope the fall is finding you with a successful harvest and it’s Expo time! First of all, I want to give a heartfelt thank you to the Gilbertson family for hosting a very successful WI Holstein Picnic on September 17. We were blessed with a beautiful day and Erik, Brenda, Mark and Vicky showed all who attended tremendous hospitality. There were several hundred attendees and we were all treated to a great herd of cows, a beautiful farmstead, activities for all ages and an overall flawlessly planned event. The state picnic is one of my favorite WHA events as it allows us to gather and visit in a low stress environment and is a family friendly event. Each family that has hosted this event over the past 11 years has treated our membership to a great event and this year was no exception. If you weren’t able to attend, be sure to add it to your calendar in 2019 as the board chose this spring to alternate every other year between barn meetings and the picnic and next spring we will be hosting barn meetings. On a sadder note, I regret to inform you that we are going to be saying goodbye to two dedicated employees at the end of 2017. After almost 15 years, Sharon Maffei has decided to slow down and enjoy a slower schedule with her family. Sharon has been an integral part of the WHA office team and has been one of the invaluable “behind the scenes” players that has helped tirelessly to make sure that every WHA event runs smoothly. She is a fun loving personality that we will all miss that have contact with the office. Additionally, Ashley Yager will also be transitioning from our parttime public relations coordinator to full-time mother. She and her husband Mike now have three young boys and Ashley deserves the opportunity to spend more time with them. Off and on since 2007, Ashley has been one of the visible faces of the organization and has been a big part of the success of our YAC group and was instrumental in helping start the WI Convention Futures Sale. She has been a major reason for that event’s success as well as helping tell the story of Wisconsin Holsteins through her feature article writing. I want to thank both Sharon and Ashley for their dedication to WHA and wish them the best in their future endeavors. We will be replacing them with one new full-time employee and if you are interested or know of someone who is interested in the position, feel free to have them contact me at kjorgensen@selectsires.com. Lastly, I hope that you can join us on October 31 in Fond du Lac at the Great Northern Sales Arena for the WHA Halloween Harvest Sale. Our co-chairs, Briyan Stremcha and Craig Krohlow, have helped select a great group of cows, heifers and calves that will be great investments for any Holstein enthusiast. Regardless of size, operation type or breeding philosophy, opportunities will be there for your inspection. Again, I hope your fall harvest is plentiful and safe and look forward to seeing you at future WHA events. KJ

BREEDER PROFILE

A Dazzling Success Craig Carncross wins the Holstein USA Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder Award by Jill Seiler, WHA Summer Intern

Jen, Nolan, Craig and Gavin Carncross

short-age summer yearling was all it took to hook Craig Carncross on Registered Holsteins. At the age of 9 years old, Carncross received his first project calf from his parents, Gordon and Emily. The calf was born August 2, but despite the wrong birthdate she would classify VG-88 and be the foundation of his show herd with two daughters that delivered multiple generations of show calves for Carncross. “I was fortunate. My dad wanted me to have a calf that was out of what he thought was his best cow,” Carncross said. “The bug probably stuck because I was fortunate enough to get a calf out of a really good cow family.” The bug has resulted in Carncross of Lodi, Wisconsin, being recognized as the 2017 Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder at the National Holstein Convention this summer.

A

A project of his own

Carncross’s breeder mentality was developed during his time showing in the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association and judging with the Columbia County 4-H program. Carncross said his dad was not very comfortable in the show ring even though he was a good judge. Nevertheless, Gordon pushed Craig and his sister Caroline to get involved in Junior Holsteins, expecting them to fit their own cattle and make breeding decisions from a young age. “By the age of 12 I had kind of taken the show cattle over. When it becomes your own project and you’re ultra competitive like I am, early on you develop the breeder mentality,” Carncross said. As Carncross got more involved in judging and showing, his life revolved around dairy and he knew that he would pursue dairy science in college. Where he would go to college was also a known quantity. “I think I probably knew I was going to go to Madison in eighth grade,” Carncross said. “My dad is a University of Wisconsin-Madison alumnus so I grew up in the winter time going down to Badger basketball games.” Graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree, Craig returned to the farm in 1999 and later married his wife Jen. They have two sons, Gavin and Nolan. Since Craig has returned to the farm, Wargo Acres has earned 17 Progressive Breeders Registry awards and seven Progressive Genetic Herd awards. In 2012, Craig was honored as the Distinguished Young Breeder by the Wisconsin Holstein Association.

“I can’t be out there for every cow that is calving and I can’t be milking them every day by myself. You have to have a whole team effort,” Carncross said. It really does take a team effort to milk the 420 milking cows three times a day in the double-eight herringbone parlor barn. The parlor is in operation for about 18 hours every day. The herd has some incredible stats. The rolling herd average is 31,600 pounds of milk with 1,200 fat and 995 pounds of protein. Even more astounding, 53 of their cows have produced over 200,000 pounds lifetime with 11 producing over 300,000 pounds. Additionally, Wargo Acres has bred 17 Dams of Merit as well as 39 Gold Medal Dams and nine National Elite Performers. The milking herd is currently housed in a freestall barn. In 2007, the farm expanded from a 50-cow tie-stall barn to the current size. More animals means more feed. Each year Wargo Acres puts up 7,000 tons of corn silage with 4,000 in bunkers and the rest in bags. Carncross says they are moving more to bunker storage because they can feed quicker and save space. “Bags just take up a lot of space and that seems to be what we are limited on, real estate,” Carncross said. The corn, alfalfa, and wheat is grown on 500 acres owned by the Carncrosses and another couple hundred acres of rented ground from neighbors. Since 60 percent of the TMR is forage, they try to produce and feed the highest quality silage and haylage that they can.

A Perfect Storm

Before this breeder herd decided to expand, they experienced a perfect storm of Excellent cows. In the early 2000s, Wargo Acres Durham Dazzle went EX-94 and soon after Wargo Acres Melrose also hit EX-94 along with Wargo Acres Mae. This trifecta of Excellents drew a lot of attention to the farm and breeding program.

It takes a team

Carncross admits that he did not accomplish any of it by himself and credits his family and team of employees for being there every day even when he can’t be. Three of the nine non-family employees have been at Wargo Acres for 10 years. 6–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/October 2017

Since then Carncross has marketed the Dazzle and Melrose lines across the world selling embryos to emerging markets and hosting foreign visitors during World Dairy Expo week. Carncross says more than 50 percent of the herd today traces back to Dazzle or Melrose. Not content to do one thing, the Dazzle and Melrose lines have been bred to play multiple markets whether it is high numbered genomic animals, great production or stylish show heifers. “That Melrose-Dazzle combination from the early 2000s, that kind of set the stage for what we are doing now,” Carncross said. What they are doing now is trying to appeal to a wide variety of clientele. Wargo Acres is always trying to create animals and cultivate females so when opportunities arise they can capitalize on them. Carncross wants the animals they sell to make the new owners happy they own them. Each year Wargo Acres sells about 100 head through word of mouth, production sales and consignment sales. They also sell embryos and breeder bulls. Carncross knows that staying relevant is difficult in the competitive breeding atmosphere that exists today in the industry. “You need to have something that hits about every decade to stay relevant,” Carncross said. For the Carncross family, this decade it was Wargo Acres Bolton Mopsie-ET. An EX-93 granddaughter of Melrose, Mopsie had almost 40,000 pounds of milk in her second lactation at two years and six months of age.

Stepping Stone to the Future

This young breeder was honored out of every breeder in the nation between the ages of 21 and 40 for his accomplishments at the National Holstein Convention in Bellevue, Washington, in June. He said it really hit home for him when we was surrounded by those he considers to be the elite breeders of Holstein USA at the convention. Craig hopes this recognition is just a stepping stone for future successes for Wargo Acres and is excited to see what happens next. He is also excited as his two sons get older and more involved in showing and hopefully the dairy. “I look back through my childhood and what my experiences were and I’m excited to see what they are interested in,” Carncross said.

2017 Wisconsin State Fair

Holstein Junior Show August 4 & 5 • West Allis, WI

The Wisconsin Junior State Fair Holstein show was held on Friday and Saturday, August 4 and 5 at the Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis. Judge Pat Conroy and Associate Judge Mark Rueth placed a total of 408 head of Holsteins over the two day show, including 210 calves, 161 yearlings and 37 cows. The Red & White show had 97 head participating in that show. Selected as Champion Cow was Paul Grulke’s winning Aged Cow, Smith-Crest-TW SH Virgie-ET. Reserve went to Joey Opsal’s Senior 3-year-old, Ryan-Vu GChip Claudette-ET. Judge Conroy commented that the champion cow was a cow that looks like she “works hard every day. She’s a well balanced, well made cow with good feet and legs, a hard top and strength from end to end.” He admired the beautiful udder on the Reserve Champion saying, “she has probably the best udder that went through the ring today.” The Holstein was later selected as Reserve Supreme Champion Cow. Selected as Calf Champion and overall Junior Champion was Kaelyn Weigel’s Winter Calf, Budjon-Abbott Alexandra-ET. Reserve Junior Champion was the Champion Yearling owned by Grant Vosters, Fairmont Solomon Limrick-ET. Judge Conroy said the winter calf was “his kind of calf. She has tremendous width, beautiful feet and legs and length of frame. She really puts it all together.” He commented that the Summer Yearling is an ultra dairy, feminine, high style heifer, but the champion has the advantage as she blends a little nicer in her parts, is fuller in the crops and flatter in her rump. Reserve Calf Champion went to the winng fall calf from the oldest group, Ms Cow-Palace Union Akira exhibited by Savanna Ridge. Reserve Yearling Champion was Floydholm Atwood Empire exhibited by Lindsey Sarbacker. Champion Bred and Owned animals were also selected for the calves, yearlings and cows. Champion Bred & Owned Calf went to Siemers Jacoby Haya-Time-ET exhibited by Connor Siemers. Yearling Bred & Owned Champion as well as the overall Junior Champion Bred & Owned was Lindsey Sarbacker’s heifer, Floydholm Atwood Empire. Finally, Riley Miller had Champion Bred & Owned Cow with Hobby-Hill Fever Lacy. Miller’s cow was also selected as Supreme Champion Bred & Owned Cow. The showmanship contest kicked off the dairy show on Thursday with almost 500 youth taking part in the different age groups. Several Junior Holstein members won their respective age groups, with Aaliyah Borchert being named the overall Supreme Champion Showman. Congratulations to all the youth that participated at the State Fair and thank you to the many farms and individuals that sponsored the first and second place trophies for the Holstein Show. THE DOMINANCE CONTINUES

Dairy judging is strong at the University of Minnesota, so strong that its teams have placed first overall in five of the six major contests in 2015 and 2016 held at: the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). The team was 2nd (to the University of Kentucky) at Harrisburg in 2016, but placed 1st in reasons by a 16-point margin in that contest. Furthermore, over the past 7 years in these 3 contests, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st overall in 11 of the 21 contests. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. If you’re considering a career in dairy, CONSIDER THE U OF M. In addition to our highly successful judging teams, you can be part of the Gopher Dairy Club, where more than 100 student members gain experience and industry contacts through activities like an all-expense-paid 11-day trip to California in January for seniors. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority. Learn more today at ansci.umn.edu.

MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2017 - 9

31st Annual WHA Futurity Twelve bovine beauties graced the shavings at the Wisconsin State Fair Park on Saturday, August 12th to compete for the title of first place in the 31st Annual Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. Judging this prestigious event was Jerome Meyer of Sun Prairie, Wis. In this non-traditional show, the animals are entered three years prior to the show and only the best of the entries compete for the title of Futurity Champion. This year, the coveted title was captured by Ryan-Vu Chelios Mocha, owned by Ryan-Vu Holsteins and shown by Amy Ryan of Fond du Lac, Wis. The Ryan family received $1500 from our generous sponsor, Compeer Financial. Mocha was also named Best Udder of the show, first place Bred and Owned animal, Top Milk Production winner and the Top Fat and Protein Production winner. Following closely in second was Ryan-Vu GChip Claudette-ET, exhibited by Joseph Opsal of Blue Mounds, Wis. Claudette won a $750 check from International Protein Sires. Joseph and Claudette also received the first place junior award and $50, sponsored by Angela Davis Brown of Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys, and the Best Dressed Junior award and $100 sponsored by Dean and Leslie Frisle of Frisle-Vu Holsteins. In third place was Miss Oeh-My Atwood Veida-ET, owned by Jenna Langer and Joel Kietzman. Agropur presented third place with a check for $500. Even though the bovine beauties are truly looking their best, the exhibitors are dressed to impress. These exhibitors gave up their white jeans and boots for a night of ball gowns and tuxedos to compete for the Best Dressed awards. All the exhibitors were looking their best and wowed the crowd. Brett Hildebrandt of Hustisford, Wis., received the Best Dressed Male award and $100 from Indianhead Holsteins. The Best Dressed Female of the night went to Courtney Ewert of Hustisford, Wis., along with $100 sponsored by Scenic-Edge Holsteins. The night was led by the Mistresses of Ceremonies, Ann O’Leary and Kristin Olson, who introduced distinguished guests and the bovine beauties. The distinguished guests included Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Courtney Moser; Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Attendant Kelsey Cramer; Alice in Dairyland Crystal Siemers-Peterman; Wisconsin Fairest of the Fairs Rebecca Starkenburg; Wisconsin Secretary of Ag Ben Brancel; Dawn Haag representing sponsor Compeer Financial; Ron Sersland for sponsor International Protein sires; and Dave Hitner for sponsor Agropur. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Futurity is a very unique show with a unique mission. The Wisconsin Holstein Association uses the futurity to help promote the dairy industry to the general public and display the first class care we provide our animals and dedication that we have for our animals and the products they produce. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Futurity was started to inform consumers about the dairy industry and Registered Holsteins. The 31st Wisconsin Holstein Association futurity would not be possible without our generous sponsors. The Wisconsin Holstein Association would like to thank the major futurity sponsors, Compeer Financial, International Protein Sires, Agropur, and Brian Greenman, Rural Mutual Insurance Agent, for helping to 10 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2017

Holstein USA Elite Performers

For a cow to qualify for the Elite PerformerTM award, she must meet the following criteria to be considered: • complete at least three lactations in a herd participating in Holstein Association USA’s TriStar program, completing the most recent lactation in the previous calendar year; 87% RHA or higher; and classified VG-85 or higher Eligible cows across the country are ranked based on pounds of combined fat and protein per day in milk. The top one percent receive the National Elite Performer award. Those National Elite Performers are then removed from consideration and the top one percent of eligible cows from each of the nine regions are honored as Regional Elite Performers. All cows currently enrolled in TriStarSM are automatically evaluated annually. Elite Performer recognition is a lifetime award and is printed on a cow’s pedigree, found underneath her milk production records.

Gildale Holsteins Welcomes Guests for the Wisconsin Holstein Picnic The Erik and Brenda Gilbertson family of Hollandale welcomed over 400 Holstein enthusiasts to the farm on Sunday, September 17, for great food, music and Holstein camaraderie. The day kicked off with the Blue Ribbon Milk 5K run/1 mile walk along the Gildale Farm. Coordinated by the Blue Ribbon 4-H Club, the event had nearly 50 participants and raised funds and awareness for mental health of the farming community. Proceeds will be split between the 4-H Club, local food pantry, and program development to support mental health for farmers. Open barn doors welcomed breeders from across the state. Visitors had the chance to view the Gilbertson herd, try their hand at dairy judging, and even take a shot at a golf chip-in shot to win some semen. Brian Behnke and ABS/St. Jacobs ABC sponsored the #Crushinit contest, where four lucky winners took home sexed Crush semen for acing the short chip shot to the water tank in the cow pasture. Proceeds from the golf challenge will benefit the Iowa County Junior Holstein Association. In addition to the golf challenge, kids were invited to enjoy the bounce house, cow-car rides, pedal tractors, the corn box and face painting, courtesy of the Pecatonica FFA chapter. Visitors to the picnic were treated to steak sandwiches from the Iowa County Cattleman’s Association, as well as ice cream, cupcakes, and beverages. Popcorn samples were available courtesy of Champion sponsor It’s Poppin of Westfield, and Advocare provided guests with beverage samples as well. Dan Hagenow Video Creation was also a Champion sponsor of the event, providing a promotional video for the Gilbertson family in advance of the picnic. Finally, Wick buildings served as an additional Champion sponsor, and a representative was on site at the new Gildale heifer shed to answer any breeder questions. The Two Man Bullet Band provided guests with music, and Alice in

WHA members and enthusiasts also heard from Kevin Jorgensen (WHA Board President), Corey Geiger (Holstein USA Vice President), WHA Princess and Attendant Courtney Moser and Kelsey Cramer, and WHA Executive Director Darin Johnson. Courtney’s Cattle Crossing

Here’s to hoping you’re all off to having a fabulous fall! Whether you’re finding yourself getting settled into your first few weeks of school, adjusting to a new college environment (like me!), in the midst of fall harvest filling the bunker silo and putting up fourth crop hay, or gracing the colored shavings with your beloved bovine, I’m wishing you all the best! A great fall activity was the 2017 Wisconsin Holstein Association State Picnic held at Gildale Holsteins in Hollandale, Wis. On behalf of all who were in attendance, I would like to thank Erik and Brenda Gilbertson and their family for extending their hospitality and hosting this event. We appreciate the time and effort the Gilbertson family put into preparing their farm and cattle. Between the Blue Ribbon MILK 5K Run and 1mile walk, the open barn, judging contest, luncheon, games and program, the event was fun for people of all ages. Another fantastic fall event is World Dairy Expo and after attending once, everyone has memories to last a lifetime. Those memories are what keep people coming back year after year. Personally, I don’t remember my first World Dairy Expo since I was just four days old, but every year since has added new memories and this year will be without a doubt filled with the most precious ones yet. What an honor it will be to present such prestigious awards to deserving Holstein breeders, owners and exhibitors. May we all “Discover New Dairy Worlds.” Following World Dairy Expo, I highly encourage all dairy youth interested in attending and competing at the 2018 Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention to visit www.wisholsteins.com for contest information. The following award applications and contest entry forms are due by November 15th: Essay Contest, Progressive Breeder, Long Range Production, Wisconsin Holstein Youth (WHY) Friend, dairy bowl, dairy jeopardy, and speaking contest. The energetic youth and adult leaders of Wood County are sure to host a wonderful junior convention, so be sure to mark your calendars for January 5-7, 2018, and travel to the Holiday Inn in Stevens Point. I encourage you to find someone in your county that has never attended before and bring them along so they can see what the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association has to offer. Until our next cattle crossing, I wish everyone a safe fall harvest and successful preparation for junior convention. Courtney Moser, 2017 Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess

Schedule Changes for Junior Convention

Calf Raffle Tickets - Get them while they’re hot!

A special thanks goes out to the Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Committee and Alpha Genetics for their sponsorship and assistance in hosting the third annual Taste of Wisconsin State Fair. Thank you also to WI Baker’s Association for contributing food to our juniors. Nearly 100 youth attended this event, which featured games and activities to kick off the annual WI Junior State Fair. Please note that we will be moving up the start time for contests on Friday of Junior Convention to 10:00 a.m. This change includes the dairy jeopardy and speaking contests. To ensure each age division of dairy jeopardy is run the same, we will have one room per age division. We are hoping this will improve consistency in the contest across the board. Also, due to the incredible amount of interest in the speaking contest, we will start that contest at 10:00 a.m. instead of 11:00 to allow both contestants and judges adequate time to finish and get to the general meeting and caucuses. We look forward to another great convention and the continued improvement of our contests and events!

It’s time to recognize the junior advisor, parent or volunteer that has helped your county gain momentum in 2017. Recognition of a WHY friend is a great way to show a dedicated leader in your county that their efforts are appreciated during the year. Everyone has those special individuals that put in countless hours to help youth build their Junior Holstein program, now show your appreciation by nominating them for the WHY Friend Award by November 15, 2017. The largest fundraising effort of the year is underway for junior programs and events – the Junior Raffle! The calf this year is donated by Sandy-Valley Farms, the Bauer family. There are several additional items available from generous donations, including various semen certificates, World Dairy Expo passes, themed baskets, show supplies and more. A note from your JACs

Hey Juniors! It has been incredible working with all of you throughout the summer. I would like to take a moment to congratulate all of you for your accomplishments and the hard work you have put in. Summer is coming to a close with the final show of the season quickly approaching. With that being said, convention is right around the corner. Convention will be held in Stevens Point, January 5-7, 2018. I hope you have begun preparations on your contest room entries and speeches. I would also like to remind you that you still have time to work on your Essays, Farm Trip applications, Long Range Production, and Progressive Breeder Awards. These forms are due November 15, 2017. Also, consider filling out the WHY Friend award for a dedicated advisor, parent, or adult member. We all know the countless hours these special people put into helping us achieve our goals. The JACs are currently working on preparing two career focused panels for the Friday of convention. These panels will be much like last year’s panels, but they will offer the opportunity to explore eight agricultural professions you may not have previously considered. Check back here on the Junior pages closer to convention for more details. If any of our older members are considering running for JAC, please feel free to contact any of the JACs to learn more about the position. We are all willing to share our experiences. Enjoy the final days of summer weather! I can’t wait to see you at convention. Jessica Steger, SW District JAC
