4 – Wisconsin Holstein News – February 2020

From the President - Craig Carncross Convention time is approaching. We are still looking for members interested in running for the Board of Directors. It is always hard to throw your hat in the ring. A person willing to run for something is also a person that is willing to become vulnerable. It is much easier to sit on the sidelines and say maybe next year, maybe when my kids are older or I’ll have more time when this event has passed. It is hard to leave your fate to an election where you might even lose. No doubt it is easier to keep your hat pulled low and avoid sharing your ideas and your time and talents. Luckily, Wisconsin Holstein has an amazing membership that has so many willing to become part of the decision making and executing process. Nothing showed that better than the National Convention this past summer. It does not get as much glamour and recognition, but this same passion burns through the District Shows, the committees that make the effort to get together to share ideas, the Princesses reading books at the library to little kids that dream of being a big kid someday and the intensity of studying who your next opponent is in quiz bowl at Junior Convention. The neatest thing for me getting involved more fully in WHA has been realizing that there are a lot of ways to get involved and that no matter how different the activities seem on the outside; they

all revolve around the common core of the Holstein cow. It is also neat to see how involvement can be different in your youth compared to your 30s or 40s. There really is something for anyone that has dairy farming in their heart. Heartfelt thanks for this opportunity to have been elected onto the Board of Directors and then getting to serve membership as the President. It has been a labor of love. I continue to encourage you to consider finding ways to get involved with your state organization. WHA needs members willing to serve as that is the beating heart of the association. WHA needs to continue to evolve and develop and the second membership fails to heed this mission it will fail. I do not present this as a Chicken Little “sky is falling scenario,” but more as a straight upfront appeal for your ideas, your time and your talents. One person really can make a difference. Get involved and join the fun. See you all at convention.

Obituaries

Clarice Marie Heller, 85, passed away peacefully December 15, 2019. She was born on July 5, 1934 in Black River Falls, the daughter of the late Harry and Ruby (Young) Ginther. Clarice was raised in Melrose, where she attended grade and secondary school. On November 14, 1953, she married Francis Heller, and together they had three sons. Together, Francis and Clarice found their true passion in farming. They moved to Alma Center in 1963, where they rented and later purchased their family farm. Clarice worked hard on the farm every day and instilled that same work ethic in her sons. She took pride in helping them as they distinguished themselves in the world of cattle winning many local, regional, and national championships, including an All-American in 1981. Clarice and Francis separated prior to transitioning the farm to their oldest son and daughter-in-law, Blake and Janell. Even in her retirement, Clarice remained heavily invested in the success of the farm, stopping by every day to see how things were going and making a run for parts when needed. Clarice loved to travel and spent her retirement years visiting many different states and countries with her dear friends. In her early 60s, Clarice purchased a pontoon boat to take out on Lake Arbutus, a goal of hers ever since she was young working on the farm. She took immense pride in her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Throughout her life, Clarice played the piano and shared her talents with her sons, grandchildren, and the many dozens of children and young adults she taught over the years. She played the organ for the United Methodist Church of Alma Center for many years until suffering a stroke in 2003. After her stroke, Clarice resided in her home in Alma Center for ten years and later moved to Atrium Post-Acute Care in Black River Falls, where she resided the remainder of her life. Clarice is survived by her sons Blake (Janell), Colin, and Brian; grandchildren Holly (John) Kamrowski, F. Cody (Majesta), Marcus (Jessie), Lisa, Elaine (Greg) Fatla, Shane (Candace), Shannon (Derek) Klahn; and seven wonderful greatgrandchildren. Those that preceded her in death are her parents, Harry and Ruby Ginther. 6 – Wisconsin Holstein News – February 2020

WHA Board of Directors Elections Board of Director Elections will be held at the 2020 Wisconsin Holstein Convention in Fond du Lac. Erica Ullom, Sara Feldmann, Craig Krohlow, and Sherry Siemers-Peterman are up for re-election.

and continue their enthusiasm working in the dairy industry and more than likely will pass it on to the next generation.

Sara Feldmann, Howards Grove

I’m an active, engaged member of the current WHA Board serving on the Executive Show, Breed Improvement and Wall of Fame committees. At this year’s National Holstein Convention in Appleton, I worked with the history presentations that many of you enjoyed. On the WHA Board, I’m not afraid to work toward changing or adjusting current WHA programs or develop new programming to keep events appealing for membership. I’ve been a WHA member for more than 40 years including time in both junior and adult membership as well as participation in programming. With this I bring a unique perspective to the WHA board. I would appreciate your support for my continuance as a WHA Board member.

Hello Holstein enthusiasts! My name is Sara Feldmann and I’m seeking reelection to the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors. I reside in Howards Grove with my husband, Tim, where he operates his family business, Feldmann Sales and Service. I work at San-Ron Holsteins for Ron Roskopf and at the Kettle Moraine Veterinary Clinic as a technician. I also serve as Vice President for the Sheboygan County Fair and help the juniors each year at the Wisconsin State Fair! In my past 3 years on the board I have helped with the Executive Show committee where I volunteered a lot of time at these events. I have helped out at the Wisconsin State Fair Futurity and the Junior Holstein Conventions over the past few years. During my time on the board we have seen a lot of changes within Wisconsin Holstein and would like to see this continue over the years. I would appreciate your support. Thank you. Along with my wife Marlene, we’ve owned and operated Krohlow’s Registered Holsteins since graduating high school in 1979 until our dispersal last year. I’ve been a national, state and county member of the Holstein Association for more than 38 years and have been serving on the state board for three years. I’ve also served on the Outagamie County Holstein board for three separate sixyear terms and served as the District 7 chair for eight years. I’ve enjoyed coaching youth in 4-H and FFA dairy judging as well as judging at local fairs and youth judging competitions. Our family consists of children, spouses and grandchildren: Ryan and Haley, Callie and Conway Krohlow; Tiffany and Nick, Brandi and Payton Prodell; and Travis and Savannah Krohlow. Our kids were all active in the county Junior Holstein Association

Erica Ullom, Bloomer

My name is Erica Ullom and I’m seeking re-election to the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board. In the three years that I have been on the board I have been on the YAC, Wall of Fame and Sales and Merchandising committees. One of the items we have added as a board that I’m proud of is that we now offer YQCA training at our junior convention. I’m from Bloomer, in Chippewa County in northwestern part of the state. I have always lived on a farm; we moved to our current location in the summer of 1990. Our farm is Mayerlane Holsteins; our work force is my parents, my sister and my two kids Hannah and Fritzy along with a couple of part-time high school and college students. We have six acres and milk 65 registered Holsteins and Jerseys. With having a small number of employees my jobs are a little different every day; I do the registering and take genetic testing samples, milk, feed and whatever else comes up on that particular day. I would appreciate your support in the upcoming board elections.

Those interested in running for the WHA Board of Directors should contact Laura Wackershauser at 800-223-4269 ext. 1 or lauraw@wisholsteins.com. Elections will take place during the Annual Business meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 22. Nominations will be accepted from the floor.

HOT TAKE

Hello everyone! My name is Hannah Ullom and it is my honor to serve as the 2020 Wisconsin Holstein Princess! I am very excited to get to know everyone over the course of this next year. I grew up in Bloomer, a small town located in the northwestern part of the state. My parents are Travis and Erica and I have an 18-year-old brother named Fritz. I’ve milked cows with my family at Mayerlane Holsteins before I can even remember. Some of my fondest memories are working in the barn with my grandparents and an excellent group of Holstein cows. I graduated from McDonell Area Catholic High School and will be attending Milwaukee Area Technical College to major in mortuary science. I am currently interning at Horan Funeral Home in Chippewa Falls. I recently finished serving as a member of the Junior Activities Committee for two years. It was a very memorable experience and I encourage everyone to look into becoming a JAC. This year, I am looking forward to as acting as an ambassador for the Holstein Association and attending shows and events across the state. If you would like to invite Roslind or me to one your events, please contact the WHA staff. Until the next take, Hannah Ullom

Hello everyone! My name is Roslind Anderson and I am serving as the 2020 Wisconsin Holstein Princess Attendant. I am the daughter of Jeremy and Dulcie Anderson of Ellsworth. I have one younger sister, Riley, and one older sister, Kali. I am currently a freshman at UW-River Falls, where I am studying dairy science in hopes of becoming an animal nutritionist. On campus I’m involved in the UWRF Dairy Club. I am also involved in my local 4-H club, Country Partners. Aside from being on campus you can usually find me in two other places, working at the Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery or my family’s farm just outside of Ellsworth. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, which includes my fuzzy four-legged friends as well. Not only does my family have Holsteins but we also have a small herd of Brown Swiss. I am very excited about what this year holds as I serve WHA while visiting new places and meeting fellow members across the state. Until next time, thank you for catching up, Roslind Anderson

2020 Wisconsin Dairy Showcase Show Rules

ANIMAL HEALTH RULES AND REGULATIONS/DAIRY CATTLE ALL CATTLE - Health requirements for the Wisconsin Dairy Showcase are the same as the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture’s requirements for intrastate movement of cattle. Please visit the DATCP website for the most recent rules - https://datcp.wi.gov/ Documents/FairRulesAnimals.pdf It is highly recommended that all animals shown at the WI Dairy Showcase be vaccinated for BVD according to your Veterinarian’s recommendations. It is also highly recommended that animals be tested for Persistently Infected (PI) BVD animals. This is a once in a lifetime test to insure that the animal is not a PI or shedder animal carrying the BVD Virus. Cattle infected with ringworm, warts, or mange may not be exhibited unless the veterinarian in charge determines the ringworm lesions or warts are inactive and incapable of transmitting the disease. Any cattle found with ringworm, warts, mange or scab shall be removed from the premises of the show. Show management is responsible for maintaining records of persons who have exhibited at the show and the identification of animals shown for 2 years. Acceptable forms of animal identification for breeding animals are (1) an official metal ear tag, (2) a breed registration number, or (3) a breed registration tattoo. Junior Ownership: Junior exhibitors shall be in competition with Open Class Cattle. To compete for junior awards the exhibitor shall not have passed his or her 21st birthday before January 1 of the year of the show. TO COMPETE FOR JUNIOR RIBBONS AND TROPHIES, ALL JUNIOR EXHIBITORS MUST HAVE THE ANIMAL’S OWNERSHIP REGISTERED OR TRANSFERRED BY THE RESPECTIVE BREED ORGANIZATION INTO THE INDIVIDUAL NAME OF THE JUNIOR EXHIBITOR ON OR BEFORE JULY 15. TRANSFER APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THE SHOW. Holstein USA’s Junior Leasing rules will be in affect at the Midwest National Spring Show. (For Junior Leasing rules, please see the Holstein USA website.) a. More than one Junior exhibitor may own an animal in partnership if the animal is exhibited by the partnership throughout the entire show season and the names of all Junior partners are listed on the registration certificate. Adult-Junior and family or farm partnerships are not acceptable. b. To be eligible to compete, entries must be shown by the Junior owner in all cases, except by prior written approval. Alternate leadsperson forms must be submitted to the Holstein Association representative by 5:00 p.m. the day before the show. If approved, another National Junior Holstein member the same age or younger must show the animal. Adults are not allowed to show, in any case. A leased animal may only be shown by the Junior lessee. c. Managerial projects may be exhibited in Open Class competition. However, they are not eligible for Junior awards. d. To be considered for Junior Awards, exhibitors must identify themselves as a qualified junior member upon check-in to show management. e. It is the responsibility of the Junior owner to prove ownership of animal. f. According to Holstein Association USA’s National Junior Show Ring Policy, exhibitors must be a minimum of nine years old to participate. Bred and Owned: An award will be given in all the female classes for the highest placing animal bred and solely owned by exhibitor. To be considered for Bred & Owned awards, one of the original owners must be listed as one of the current owners. Where a herd is registered in the names of different members of a family and where the herd is one unit, all entries may be considered as exhibits of one breeder. Junior Bred and Owned: An award will be presented in all the female classes for the highest placing animal bred and solely owned by a junior exhibitor; the junior exhibitor must be leading the animal during the class as stated in the rules of Junior Ownership. To be eligible for Junior Bred & Owned, the name(s) listed as breeder and owner on the registration certificate must be the same. Adult-Junior partnerships are not acceptable. Family unit or farm partnerships will not qualify for Bred & Owned awards unless all partners are Junior members and listed on the certificate under breeder and owner. Production Awards: In all Holstein cow classes, except the Junior & Senior 2-Year-Olds, the cow with the highest 305 day milk production record will be recognized. The recognition will be based solely on total milk production without regard to the milking frequency or the testing program. Records will be verified at the time of check-in with an official ICR or herd test sheet or an official pedigree. Best Udder: A Best Udder ribbon will be awarded in all milking cow classes. The Best Udder cow in each of the milking classes will compete for Best Udder of the Show. Premier Breeder Award: The breeder winning the most points on six (6) animals, all exhibited in the single classes, shall be designated Premier Breeder. No entry is required, and the winner of this award need not be an exhibitor at the show, or need not be the current owner of any of the point winning animals. In classes with ten or less animals, no more than two head per breeder will be counted toward premier points. In case of a tie, additional animals will be counted, one at a time, until the tie is broken. Breeder Defined: The owner of the dam at the time of service shall be considered the breeder of the animal. Where a herd is registered in the names of different members of a family, and where the herd is one unit, all entries may be considered as exhibits of one breeder. Otherwise, when animals are bred in partnership, each unique partnership is considered a unique breeder. Premier Exhibitor Award: The exhibitor winning the most points on six (6) animals, all owned and exhibited in the single classes, shall be designated the Premier Exhibitor. All

exhibitors will be eligible for this award, and no entry is required. In classes with ten or less animals, no more than two head per breeder will be counted toward premier points. In case a herd is registered or bred in the names of different members of a family, residing on one farm or breeding establishment, and where the herd is one unit, all entries may be considered as a single exhibitor for all group classes and Premier Exhibitor. However, members of one family, where cattle are not housed as one unit, will not be considered as a single exhibitor. When animals are owned in partnership, each unique partnership is considered a unique exhibitor. Substitutions within class of the same breed by the same exhibitor may be made at check-in time. Exhibitors are also allowed one open substitution within the same breed as long as the ownership remains the same. 4. All animals must be in place and checked-in by 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2020. The Wisconsin Dairy Showcase show management and the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Board of Directors reserve the final and absolute right to interpret the rules and regulations of the Shows and will settle and determine all matters, questions, or differences in regard thereto or otherwise arising out of, or in connection with the Shows. In the event a question arises concerning an animal’s age, show management may request that an individual registration certificate be checked at ringside. THE PUREBRED DAIRY CATTLE ASSOCIATION SHOW RING CODE OF ETHICS The showing of registered dairy cattle stimulates and sustains interest in the breeding of registered dairy cattle. It is also an important part of the promotion, merchandising and breeding program of many breeders. For these reasons, the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (PDCA) believes that it is in the best interest of all breeders of registered dairy cattle to maintain a reputation of integrity in dairy cattle shows and to present a wholesome and progressive image of dairy cattle in the show ring. PDCA endorses this Show Ring Code of Ethics for all dairy breed shows and pledges its full cooperative support for its enforcement to show management, show judges, and the national breed associations. The application of this Code of Ethics provides for absolute responsibility for an animal’s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in or had actual knowledge of the treatment of the animal in contravention of this Code of Ethics. Dairy cattle exhibitors shall, at all times, deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. It is recognized that there are certain practices in the proper care and management of dairy cattle that are necessary in the course of moving dairy cattle to and between shows that are advisable to keep them in a sound, healthy state so they might be presented in the show ring in a natural, normal condition. At all times, exhibition livestock shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, or illegal or nonapproved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance, or residue. The position of the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification by injection or internal or external administration of any substance or by any involvement in unethical fitting. GROOMING & PREPARATION Dairy cattle exhibitions are conducted under standards for evaluating conformation established by the PDCA Unified Score Card (2009), with specific breed characterisFebruary 2020 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 15

tics taken into consideration by the show judge. In this connection, animals will be groomed and prepared for the judge’s evaluation in order to display the animal’s natural contour, conformation, performance and mobility. Specifically: 1. Changing the natural color of the animal is prohibited. However, external applications of cosmetics that affect only appearance may be used, including by way of example hoof polishes and false switches. 2. The maximum allowable length of naturally growing hair anywhere on the topline is not to exceed 1” (Holstein guidelines will allow up to 1½”). Exhibitors will be required to comply with this rule before the animal is allowed to enter the ring 3. Addition of foreign objects, including but not limited to hair or hair substitutes, cloth or fiber, to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body is prohibited. 4. Externally sealing the teat end with a preparation that does not harm the animal’s skin is permissible. Natural teat placement will be given preference over artificially positioned teats. VIOLATIONS: FALSE, DECEPTIVE OR UNACCEPTABLE PRACTICES These practices are violations of the Code of Ethics and will be reported to show management and may be reported to the respective national breed associations: 1. Surgery or unethical insertion of any matter under the skin or into body cavities, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body (e.g., administration of fluid via a stomach tube or other similar apparatus to fill the rumen), though not to preclude practices required or involved in normal management. 4. Criticizing or interfering with the judge, show management, or other exhibitors while in the showring, or other conduct detrimental to the breed or the show. 5. Challenging, threatening or interfering with an ethics committee appointed by show management to monitor the animals on exhibit on the show grounds. EXHIBITOR RESPONSIBILITY The act of entering an animal in a livestock show is the giving of consent by the owner, exhibitor, fitter and/or absolutely responsible person (hereinafter referred to as “Exhibitor”) for show management to obtain any specimens of urine, saliva, blood, milk, or other substances from the animal to be used in testing. Materials may also be collected by ultrasound and photographic methods and by direct examination of animal. The act of entering an animal is the giving of consent by the owner, exhibitor, fitter and/or absolutely responsible person (the “Exhibitor”) to have disciplinary action for violation of this Show Ring Code of Ethics taken by show management, the state in which the show occurs, and/or the national dairy breed association without recourse. MONITORING PROCEDURES The Ethics Committee, as defined below, shall have the authority to inspect all animals to determine if violations of Wisconsin Dairy Showcase Show Ring Policy have occurred. To help in this regard, the Ethics Committee has the authority to perform and review results of the following: 1. An ultrasound examination of the udder of selected animals immediately upon completion of respective milking class competition. It shall be the exhibitor’s responsibility to deliver selected cow to the designated testing area. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown the exhibitor will be informed by show managment that the showing of that animal may result in a violation of the Wisconsin Dairy Showcase Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred. 4. All complaints of alleged violations (as is designated in Enforcement Procedure point #2) received by the Show Chairman or a member of the show management must be presented to the Wisconsin Holstein Association for review by the Ethics Committee within five (5) days of receiving notice of alleged violations, with the Ethics Committee to make a decision on the violations within ten (10) days of receiving such notice. 5. Within thirty (30) days Wisconsin Dairy Showcase Show Committee shall review the findings from the Ethics Committee and make a recommendation to the WHA Board of Directors of the disciplinary action. The exhibitor will be able to participate in the Show Committee meeting. The WHA Board of Directors shall meet on the same day to review the findings from the Ethics Committee, recommendations from the Show Committee and hear any presentation the exhibitor wishes to present. 6. Obituaries

James H. Armbruster died peacefully on January 14, at the age of 81 following a recent diagnosis and brave battle with cancer. Jim was born on April 10, 1938, to Andrew and Lydia (Seifert) Armbruster of Mequon. After his father’s death in 1950, the family grew the farm into a registered dairy operation and began Armbruster Brother’s Farms. Jim credits his brother Edgar for his success and the family’s survival. Upon graduation in 1963 from the UWMadison, Jim worked for mentee Lyle Spencer in Eagle, selecting premium dairy cattle for Red Brae’s Registered Brown Swiss herd. Jim married Mary Lee Zimmerman of Burlington in 1970. Jim was a dedicated and prominent cowman. He judged major dairy cattle shows throughout the U.S., Latin America, and Europe. A beloved fixture of the World Dairy Expo, he was the first recipient of the A.C. “Whitie” Thompson Award, recognizing exemplary showmanship and leadership. Jim’s lifelong career in agriculture was highlighted by his service to his alma mater. As dairy herdsman for the UW-Madison, Jim was a recognized and awarded coach, teacher, and mentor. He had an impact on scores of students during his tenure and beyond. After retiring, Jim farmed where he

raised and assembled dairy heifers for sale and export. He enjoyed traveling to visit his children, cheering on Wisconsin sports, spending time with his dear friend Patricia Rohloff and her family, and taking adventures of all kinds. Friends and family will remember his charisma, humor, and generosity. Jim is survived by his daughter, Heidi; sons, Troy (Jessica) and Chad (Ellen); and a grandson, Walter. He leaves behind his brother, Edgar (Phyllis); nephews, Steve, David, and Eric, and nieces, Jill (Chuck Jinkins), Lea Ann (Jeff) Bleck (children, Elise and Brady), and Beth (David) Storms (children, Calli and Wyatt). He is preceded in death by his brother Andrew. The family thanks the caregivers at UW Health, UW Hospital, and Agrace Hospice for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made to the organization of your choice in Jim’s name.

STUDENT PROFILE Name: Zach Servais Hometown: Chaseburg, WI School: LaCrosse Central High School Class Size: 385 Farm: Hamburg Hills Farm Major: Dairy Science Why did you decide to attend UWMadison? I always wanted to go to school for Dairy Science, and the world-class reputation of UW-Madison was certainly alluring. It also provided me an opportunity to leave home for a time, and see what life is like away from the family farm. What has been your most memorable college experience? While college has been rich with a multitude of memorable experiences, I would have to say my favorite experiences have been some of the trips I’ve been on. From attending conferences across the Midwest to simple farm tours, these trips have showed me that there is a great amount that one can learn outside of the classroom. What has been your favorite course? Dairy Science 305 - Lactation Physiology with Dr. Laura Hernandez. It was a very interesting class that covered historical, practical, and physiological aspects of milk production across a broad range of species, and included guest lectures from industry professional including dairy inspectors, human lactation consultants, and more. What are your future career goals? After graduation, I plan to return to my family’s dairy operation. Dairy Starts Here! 2019: The Tradition Continues – Royal Winter Fair and Farm Visits story and photos submitted by Dean Solie It’s becoming a tradition for the “Suellen Syndicate.” It was started by Dave Rose and Orville Kemink. For Dave, he was a great fan of Canadian genetics and never missed The Royal in 51 years. For Orville, he heard several progressive breeders find great Canadian breeding stock, and very much enjoyed The Royal. We miss them – but they are in a better place – looking at great Registered Holsteins in “greener pastures.” This year’s trip started in Freemont, Wis., at Bruce Hoeft’s Farm. On Sunday, Nov. 3, we headed for Canada. This year we decided to go around the northern route and entered Canada at Sault Ste. Marie. We traveled to Barrie, Ont. the first day – about 650 miles. On Monday we headed to the Port Perry and Hastings, Ont. area for farm visits. On Wednesday evening we made our final farm visit at Paris, Ont. These three days we visited 20 great Canadian breeding establishments. They were: Kingsway, Crovalley, Ronbeth, Pheogsway, Trent Valley, Tomalynn, Scuibhaven at Sunnymaple, Skyline, Quality, Dandyland, Hanalee, Hazelcrest, Upridge, Darcroft, Smithden, Claynook, Walnutlawn, and finally Browndale. We thank them for their hospitality and friendship. We have made many Canadian friendships and are welcomed at their farms. Every year we also try to visit some new farms. One time we visited a new farm, we had no appointment and they were not expecting us. We were met by a very nice farm wife and she gladly showed us around their fine facilities and great herd of cows. Later, at The Royal she was overheard telling a group of her Canadian farm wife friends, “We were visited by a great bunch of old Wisconsin breeders – all with gray hair and rough hands. They are our new Wisconsin friends!” They are ours also! Everywhere we went, we met enthusiastic Holstein breeders and saw cows we all would have liked to take home. The farms varied from well-kept older stall barns to newer, very elaborate stall barns, and to the very latest freestall barns with the latest robotic milkers, alley scrapers, and robotic feed pushers, usually for 100 to 120 cows with two robots. Most had very attractive entrances, trophy rooms and offices. The breeding programs varied from Canadian old school to the latest cutting-edge genomics and everything in between, mostly favoring old school

to in between. One might also suggest when in the transit area – don’t miss Quehl’s Buffet Restaurant in downtown Tavistock. It’s a favorite spot for Holstein tours to stop during Royal Fair visits. We invited Paul and Ellen MacLeod of Darcroft Farms to join us and treated them to the great food and tremendous desserts and pies. Paul is a good friend and is former president of Holstein Canada and Ellen is a former Wisconsin Holstein girl – the former Ellen Lee. They met several decades ago at World Dairy Expo. On Thursday we headed for Toronto for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair for the Holstein shows and the Sale of Stars. We also took in the many commercial exhibits, horse shows, and other dairy breed shows. A great time was had by all! A great thrill for Wisconsin Holsteins and our group was Floydholm MC Emoji-ET EX-92 being named winner of the Junior 3-Year-Old class and Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion. Emoji is owned by Gene Nehls’ sons, Shawn and Seth. Gene is a member of our group but couldn’t come along because of the late harvest season. Emoji was also winner of the Wisconsin State Fair Futurity and was first Junior 3-year-old and Intermediate Champion at the International Holstein Show earlier this fall. Gene and the boys have a great herd of cows with a number of Excellents in three breeds. Because of Emoji’s accomplishments this summer, half interest was purchased by a group of Wisconsin ladies called La Femme Fatale, with Shawn and Seth retaining the other half interest. Later, Crescentmead and Milksource also became partners and she is housed at Milksource. Congratulations to the Nehls family and their partners for developing this great cow! After the selection of the Grand Champion Holstein, we headed back to Wisconsin. We experienced the first big snowstorm in northern Ontario and were lucky to find a motel to stay at the rest of the night. Everything was still treacherous the next morning, but at least it was daylight. Everything improved in Michigan and we made it back to Freemont, Wis., late Saturday. We are already looking forward to next year. Until the cows come home – so long until next year. 1. The Quality herd is always impressive – 50 percent scored Excellent. We were welcomed by Arie and met Paul at The Royal. Our group: L-R Mark Eggert, Joe Hughes, Mark Ireland, Dean Solie, Al Silverthorn, Bruce Hoeft, Chuck Westphal. Front: Our good Utah friend, Craig Harris. He’s a Packers fan! We always have a really good time! 2. The Faris brothers are always glad to see us. Their farm is one of the very most impressive Canadian farms with nearly all cattle scored Excellent and Very Good in beautiful, well-kept facilities. A highlight was their EX-96 10-year-old Shottle son herd sire. 3. The entrance to the new Crovalley robotic barn. The Crowleys always give us a warm welcome to their impressive farm – great people and great Registered Holsteins – 29 new Excellents last classification, giving them second most in Canada. Bossdale being number one. Needless to say, the cows adapted to the new facilities very well. 4. Standing on a rock behind us, Morgan McMillan of Kingsway. Their cattle are always in strong contention at several major shows such as World Dairy Expo and The Royal. They also sell large numbers of show quality cattle to other breeders.
