Obituaries Patrick O’Brien

Patrick James O’Brien, 74, of Fitchburg, Wis., passed away on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2021, with his devoted caretaker, Helen Wright, and loving wife, Jan, by his side in their home of 46 years. Patrick was born to parents Marv and Virginia O’Brien on Dec. 3, 1946, in Madison, Wis. He graduated from Oregon High School and received a degree in Dairy Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Pat served his country as a first and second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Pleiku, Vietnam, from 1970 to 1971. Pat married the love of his life, Janice Kurt, on Aug. 31, 1968, who survives him. Pat is also survived by his daughters, Shannon (Michael) Kaszuba, Heather O’Brien (Aaron Kerr), Lindsey O’Brien and Erin O’Brien (Joshua Anderson); as well as his grandchildren, Krystian, Mariusz, Adrian, Patrick, Jacob, Keira and Lennon. He is also survived by his siblings, Steven (Karen) O’Brien, Kevin (Patricia) O’Brien, Maureen (Michael) Maloney and Shawn (Jane) O’Brien; and brother-in-law, John (Nancy) Kurt. He was

predeceased by his parents, Marv and Virginia; in-laws, Jerry and Wilma Kurt; sister-in-law, Sue (John) Drew; and several extended family members. Pat was very well-known in the dairy farming community. As part of his business breeding dairy cattle, he spent much of his adult life building lasting relationships while traveling the winding roads of rural southern Wisconsin. Pat received a multitude of awards from agricultural organizations, including the distinguished service award from the Holstein Breeders of Green County in 2019. He served as a board member for the Dane County Fair, the Dane County Holstein Breeders, and was also involved in a variety of other ag organizations and the World Dairy Expo for many years. Pat was extremely sociable, light-hearted, and generous. Pat’s friends and family will remember him as a merry soul, always ready to laugh and crack jokes. In his free time, Pat enjoyed playing cards, music, and watching baseball and football. He adored spending time with his grandkids. In his later years, Pat researched and reconnected with many of his former Army companions. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Pat’s name to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Green County or the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association.

Breeder Profile

District 7: Olson Family Farm By Mara Budde Rich, Eric and Julaine Olson of Door County have a deep pride for the land they call home. In a county that is known for tourism, beaches and beautiful scenery, these fifth generation farmers are caring for their Registered Holsteins on the same land as their forefathers did 150 years ago. Rich, Eric and Julaine are responsible for all dairy operations on the farm. Eric and Julaine have three children, Zachary, Luke and Anna, who all are involved on the farm, helping out on weekends and during the summer when they aren’t at their jobs. Rich graduated from UW-Madison in 1990 with a degree in dairy science and Eric attended UW-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course. Julaine has a degree in animal biology from UW-Green Bay. The Olson family has been dairying in Door County since 1872 when Rich and Eric Olson’s great-great-grandfather, Mathias Olson, immigrated from Norway. Rich and Eric’s parents bought the farm from the family in 1965 with 30 cows in a tie-stall barn. Much has changed since that purchase. In 1978, space in the milking barn was increased to house 100 cows in a tie-stall setup. 2013 brought the biggest changes to the farm when their freestall barn was modified to accommodate a Lely A4 milking robot and the herd was downsized to 60 cows. Robots have certainly changed how the Olsons farm. Outside of no longer having the physical demands of milking in the tie-stall barn, the Olsons have more time in their schedule for things like fieldwork and family activities. And with this addition, Rich and Eric hope that this technology makes it more attractive as a lifestyle choice for future generations. The cows, and their people, found it challenging to adapt to the new milking system at first. In addition, Rich says that the learning curve on the software and equipment is quite steep. “Adapting to the robot was equally challenging to the cows, as well as to us. It takes an incredible amount of patience with the cows and each other, Rich says. “The cows caught on and so did we. Now, we can’t imagine going back to milking cows the way we did

Rich, Shelly, Julaine and Eric Olson standing in front of their Lely robot.

before.” Another change that came with the robotic milking system was altering the ration to a PMR since additional grain is fed at the robots according to a cow’s production requirements. Their ration consists of haylage, corn silage, baled hay, high moisture shell corn and protein mix. “Our family has always been early adapters of technology. Whether it was rubber-tired tractors, Sturgeon Bay milking machines, four-wheel-drive tractors or robotic milking, our family has not been afraid to take calculated risks in making decisions to better our lives,” Rich says. “In every example, the end result was that our life was better because of the decisions made.” Another area Rich and Eric are working on is genetics that suit that cows they like and how that can be functional with the robots. Since 1978, the Olsons have been using aAa to breed balanced, consistent and profitable cows. Like many who transition to robots, breeding emphasis, in addition to

balance and profitably ,is placed on rear teat placement and factors which favor adaptability to the robot. Sires that are in the tank at Olson Family Farms include Doc, Logistics, Mitchell, Renegade and Donzino. Some of the herd is also bred to high type sires such as Analyst, Moovin, Undenied, Derby and Cadillac. The Holstein bug started for Rich and Eric at the Door County Fair in 1976 with project calves Barbara and Brenda. The Olson’s herd hasn’t always been registered, but Rich says once the Holstein Herd book opened up, they made the decision to take part in the upgrade program to get the entire herd registered. On their last classification this September, their herd had five

new Excellent cows. Their current BAA is 107.0. DJ-Purepride G C Iyana-ET, sired by Mr Chassity Gold Chip-ET, was raised to EX-92 and is their highest scored cow. The top 25 percent of the herd is bred to sexed semen and the lower 25 percent is bred to beef ensuring that the Olsons improve genetics from their top animals. Continual improvement on genetics and in production herdwide is a goal that Rich, Eric and Julaine strive for on the dairy. “We work for continuous improvement of the herd, our crops and our community. We are truly a family farm that has placed high value on being good neighbors and good people,” Rich says. Their production goal is 100 pounds of energy corrected milk per cow per day. The herd is currently achieving this goal and Rich and Eric have been working toward maintaining it. Reproductive efficiency and sound health protocols are also something they focus on to stay profitable. When Rich, Eric and Julaine aren’t farming, they like to show at the Door County Fair, District Holstein Show, Wisconsin State Fair and Wisconsin Championship Show. Zachary, Luke and Anna like taking part in these activities too. Community involvement is also important to the Olson family. They are members of the Southern Door FFA Alumni, Peninsula Pride Farms and are active at church. Eric is on the Door County Cooperative board of directors and Rich is the Fire Chief of the Southern Door Fire Department. The Olsons are true stewards of the land and have worked hard to set themselves up for future farming success. With their love of cows, use of technology and breeding program, they look forward to a bright future ahead.

Wisconsin Red and Whites Excel at Expo Grand Champion of the International Red & White Show – Antia Absolute Joline-Red

Antia Absolute Joline-Red has been making waves in the show ring since 2018 but had never captured the Grand Champion title at World Dairy Expo. But 2021 was her year. Joline was purchased by Milk Source and Laurie Fisher at World Dairy Expo in 2018 and since then has been shown extensively. Her long list of accolades includes being the first Junior 3-yearold and Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair in 2018. That same year she was the Reserve All-American Red & White Junior 3-year-old. 2019 brought success with being Honorable Mention Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair, Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Championship Red and White Show and Reserve All-American 4-Year-Old. With no World Dairy Expo in 2020, Joline made the trip to Ohio for the North American Open Dairy Cattle Show where she won the 5-year-old class in the Red and White Show. Earlier in 2020, she was the Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Championship Red and White Show. She repeated that Grand Champion title at the 2021 Wisconsin Championship Red and White Show before heading to the big dance and topping the International Red and White Show as the Grand Champion. Joline has a Diamondback daughter that is a prospect for 2022. This winter she will have pregnancies by Analyst and Unstoppabull. She also has a Hanans June calf. Joline is due back in the summer of 2022 with her sixth calf. Intermediate Champion of the Open and Junior Shows, Grand Champion of the Junior Show, International Red & White Show: Scenic-Edge Jordan-Red

Jacey and Hadley Ross may be from Arizona but they, along with their Holsteins, have found a home in Wisconsin. The Ross’s topped off their show season for Scenic-Edge Jordan-Red with earning the 14 – Wisconsin Holstein News – November 2021

Intermediate Champion of the Open and Junior Shows andGrand Champion of the Junior Show in the International Red & White Show and then following that up with being selected Supreme Champion of the Junior Show the final day of World Dairy Expo. Jordan hails from the same cow family at Scenic-Edge Holsteins that made another Supreme Champion of the Junior Show in 2008, Scenic-Edge Joyful-Red-ET EX-92. She is a max score EX-92 Jordy from Scenic-Edge Jasmine-Red EX-93 (Hestry). There is then a VG88 Maxwell from Scenic-Edge Jellybean EX-92 (Advent), who was the Junior Champion of the International Red & White Show in 2009. Jordan’s fourth dam, Scenic Edge Justine EX-92, is a full sister to Scenic-Edge Joyful-Red-ET. This entire family goes back to a VG86 Redmarker who has produced 34 All-American nominations, of which 10 have been All-American, eight have been Reserve AllAmerican and 12 have been Junior All-American. Arizona Dairy Company and Jacey and Hadley Ross purchased Jordan through Graisson Schmidt from the Quest for Success Sale in March of 2019. From then on, she started to leave her stamp in the showring. In 2019 she earned an impressive list of honors including Junior Champion of the Royal Winter Fair Red & White Show, Western Spring National Black and White and Red and White Shows, California State Black and White and Red and White Shows, in addition to being All-Canadian Red & White Summer Yearling and Junior All-American Red & White Summer Yearling. But even with these impressive honors, 2021 was the biggest year for Jordan and the Arizona Dairy Company crew. Jordan took home the Intermediate Champion title of the Junior and Open Shows, Grand Champion of the Junior Show and Reserve Grand Champion of the Open Show at the Wisconsin Summer Championship Red & White Show. Arizona Dairy is looking forward to 2022. Jordan is due back in April for the next show season and they have plans to IVF her for exportable embryos. The Ross girls own a variety of other soundpedigreed animals of which many are housed at Maple-Leigh

Futures in Delavan. Other exciting Holsteins they own include St-Jacob Destry LavaRed-ET EX-93, Ms Unstopabul Beauty-In-Red VG-88, Apple-Pts Ainsa-Red VG-88, Arb-Flo-Spr Honeybun-Red-ET EX-92, Ms Fannys Flaunt It-Red-ET EX-91, Kress-Hill Smoke-Red-ET and R-John Crushin on Courtney EX-92. All of these animals, in their own right, have done well in the showring. Both girls love showing and continue to concentrate on the development of their show string. Jacey and Hadley Ross were very active in their Odyssey 4-H Club. Both held leadership positions, showed dairy cattle, and participated in the dairy judging team. Recently, genetics have become a large part of the selection of their show cattle. Hadley is attending Central Arizona College. She is pursuing a degree in agriculture and works in the onsite IVF lab for the dairy. Jacey recently graduated with a cosmetology degree from the Aveda Institute and is working in a well-known resort in the Phoenix area. Both girls continue to be a part of the Arizona Dairy operation. At Arizona Dairy, their focus is breeding for health, longevity and productivity for both their milking herd and show animals. Reserve Junior Champion of the International Junior Red & White Show: Betley Unstp Lionize-Red-ET

Clarie and Jacob Betley of Pulaski have been showing dairy cattle since they were able to be Cloverbuds in 4-H. They started with showing black and white grade Holsteins from the Betley’s herd. As their passion for showing grew, the family started to purchase registered calves for the kids. Their love for their animals developed and their knowledge of the show world progressed. Claire and Jacob accomplished a huge goal at this year’s World Dairy Expo with a junior bred & owned heifer, Betley Unstp Lionize-Red-ET, taking home Reserve Junior Champion honors. Over the years, the Betley kids have gotten a lot of help from Jay and Heather Jauquet in developing their show program. Claire’s first purchase was MD-West-View OK Siri-Red-ET in spring of 2017. Jacob’s first calf he bought was Jauquet On Point Amore in the spring of 2019. Both kids have added a purchase or two each year since. They’ve now been able to start their own show herd from the animals they purchased. A renovated barn on their farm became the show barn for the kids’ animals. There are several pens with bedded pack areas and outside access. There is a wash rack outside and an area to do embryo work. The family also has some of the show heifers in the bedded pack calf barn where high genetic heifers are housed.

Claire’s focus has shifted to mainly Red and White Holsteins. She is currently the Wisconsin Red and White Dairy Cattle Princess. Jacob remains true to his black and whites. World Dairy Expo of 2019 was a special one for Claire when she purchased OCD Jo Lionking-RedET, the dam of Lionize, at the World Classic Sale. This is where their 2021 Expo story begins. Before Expo, Lionize had moderate success at other shows, developing over the course of the year. She was third and second junior bred and owned at the Wisconsin State Fair Junior Dairy Show. Her shining moment came at World Dairy Expo when she was second open and junior in the winter calf class and in the Junior Champion run, was chosen as the Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show and then the Honorable Mention Junior Champion of the Show. “This is a dream for so many breeders and show people, and Claire was lucky enough to enjoy this level of success as a 16-year-old,” Jena Betley says. “We have a lot of people to thank for our success in the ring that day. The people in the barn taking care of her and feeding her played a huge role. Two other people that I need to mention are Trent Styczynski and Laura Lesher. Without the help of these two very special people being involved with the kids and the show cattle, the success Lionize and Claire saw at Expo would not have been possible at all.” Lionize’s family has also done well for the Betley kids. Her dam, Lionking, was fourth and second junior at the 2020 Wisconsin Championship Red and White Show and was nominated Junior All-American. Full sister, Leonine, was the third fall calf at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair Dairy Show in 2021. The Betleys also plan on showing two relatives of Lionize at NAILE in November. In addition to the “L” family, Claire’s first red and white had some level of success at local shows and has several daughters in herd. The Betley’s also purchased some cows from Jay and Heather Jauquet in 2017 including Synergy Jr Lovebug-Red, who was signed up for the Shawano County Futurity. Claire showed her in the Futurity and really enjoyed that experience. Lovebug also has several offspring in their herd. Both kids are extremely involved – both play high school soccer and select league soccer, are a part of 4-H and FFA. Claire is an FFA officer and Jacob is a shadow officer this year. Jacob also sings in the high school choir, Claire plays in the band and really enjoys marching band and pep band. The Betleys milk just over 2,600 cows in a 50-stall rotary parlor and crop 4,400 acres. The cows average between 100 and 105 pounds per day with 4.1 to 4.2 percent fat and 3.0 to 3.1 percent protein. For the past six years, their SCC has averaged around 70-80. The Betleys breed with sexed semen or Angus semen and also implant embryos, both from their top genetic families and for one of the bull studs. Their big project this year and into next is the building of digesters and a solar field with the intent of producing renewable natural gas.

World Dairy Expo Champion Features Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion – Oakfield Solomon Footloose

developing her to her full potential. Duckett Crush Tatoo at Select Sires is one of the highlights of Mike and Julie’s breeding program. He is from a cow family that fits the mold on what the Ducketts look for. Tatoo’s grandam, Vangoh Durham Treasure EX-96 99-MS, was purchased from their friend and neighbor Bob and Christine Barden as a two-year-old. Mike and Julie say that “seeing his daughters win shows and being the high scoring two-year-olds for other breeders is very satisfying and gives us an enormous amount of pride.” Champion Bred & Owned of the Holstein Show – Ms Beautys Black Velvet

Oakfield Solomon Footloose found her way to Wisconsin in May, but her legacy began long ago at Duckett Holsteins with Harvue Roy Frosty EX-97. Footloose is a granddaughter of the two-time Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo. Her dam is Duckett-SA Braxton Frisco EX-94. Footloose is scored EX-94 with a 98-point mammary system. Along with Tim and Sharyn Abbott, Mike and Julie Duckett purchased Footloose from Oakfield Corners Dairy in New York. Before coming to Wisconsin, she already had showring prominence being Nominated All-American Junior 2-Year-Old and named All-American Junior 3-Year-Old under the care and ownership of Oakfield Corners Dairy. The Abbotts and Ducketts decided to offer Footloose at the Summer Selections sale this past June where Vierra Dairy, known for their showring success with Jerseys, partnered up with them to purchase this cow. During the International Holstein Show this year at World Dairy Expo, Footloose topped the 4-year-old class and was later named Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion of the show. She also puts in the work at home with a three-year-old record of 32,280 pounds of milk, 4 percent fat, 1302 pounds of fat, 3.2 percent protein and 1044 pounds of protein. Footloose is pregnant and due in June for the 2022 show season and the Ducketts will began IVF work on her in late October. Duckett Holsteins milks about 60 cows with BAA of 113.4 in Rudolph. “We love the business and enjoy marketing cattle with show ring potential and high type. Having the opportunity to purchase Footloose was a dream come true with Frosty being her grand dam. Frosty is the cow that gave us a name in the business,” they say. In the future, the Duckett’s plan to keep seizing the opportunity when a cow that is their kind becomes available with the goal of 18 – Wisconsin Holstein News – November 2021

Winning the 5-year-old class and being named Champion Bred & Owned of the Show was Ms Beautys Black Velvet EX-92. Originally bred and owned by Triple T Holsteins of Ohio, she was purchased by Mike and Julie Duckett as a two-year-old. She is a Goldwyn out of Ms Excels Dundee Beauty EX-95, the All-American Aged Cow in 2011. Triple T and Vierra Dairy joined in a partnership with Ducketts at WDE on Black Velvet. Velvet earned Reserve All-American and Reserve All-Canadian honors in 2019 and was also the Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Royal Winter Fair the same year. 2021 was Velvet’s first World Dairy Expo. Looking forward to 2022, Velvet is pregnant and due in April for next show season. She too has had IVF work done on her. Intermediate Champion: Oak-Ridge-K GChip Turbo

Oak-Ridge-K Gchip Turbo has been having success in the ring all 2021 and capped it off with claiming the Intermediate Champion honor at the International Holstein Show. Prior to this, she claimed the winning spot in the Senior 3-year-old class and named Best Udder. The team at Milksource Genetics noticed Turbo at the Midwest National Spring Show and purchased

her from the Morrison family. She would be the first Senor 3-yearold, Intermediate Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of both the Midwest National Spring Holstein Show and Wisconsin Summer Championship Holstein Show. In 2020, she was the first Senior 2-Year-old at the Midwest Fall National Holstein Show. Turbo was bred by Jim and Janet Kappers of Minnesota. She is a Gold Chip from a GP-83 Windbrook, then an EX-91 Roy, then Ernest-Athony SD Tobi 3E-96 and Alanvale Inspiration Tina EX-95. Both Tobi and Tina have their own show accolades. Overall, the dairy has 45 head of registered cattle. In 2010, they built a new 10 cow comfort tie-stall barn with two big box stalls. Josh and Nicole both work fulltime off the farm to maintain the family hobby at Hobby-Hill. Junior Champion of the Junior Show: Jeffrey-Way Doorman Tavor-ET

Intermediate Champion and Champion Bred and Owned of the Junior Show: Hobby-Hill Denver Elizabeth

Hobby-Hill Denver Elizabeth has always been special to Gracin Speich of Orfordville since the moment he assisted in her delivery. She’s even named after his favorite TV show character, Elizabeth Quinn from Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. Aside from being special to Gracin, her pedigree is also pretty special – she’s backed by five generations of Very Good or Excellent dams back to Krull Broker Elegance EX-96 3E GMD DOM. Since Elizabeth was shown as a spring calf, she has been doing well in the showring for Gracin and his sister Chesney. She was the first spring calf, 10 and under exhibitors, at the 2019 District 6 Holstein Show and placed fourth in that same class at the 2019 Wisconsin Summer Championship Show. 2021 was another successful year for Elizabeth. She claimed the Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show at the Midwest Spring National Holstein Show and was fourth and first junior in the Junior 2-year-old class. Moving into summer, she was the first Junior 2-year-old, Best Udder, Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show and Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion at the District 6 Holstein Show. Her showring run at the Wisconsin Summer Championship Holstein Show was just as fruitful. She topped the Junior 2-year-old class and was Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show. But World Dairy Expo was really Elizabeth’s time to shine. She was the Intermediate Champion and Honorable Mention Grand Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show and took fourth in the International Holstein Show. At all of the shows Elizabeth was exhibited at in 2021 she was the Champion Bred & Owned of the Junior Show; an award both Gracin and Chesney are very proud of. Elizabeth is due July 2022 for next year’s show season. She has IVF sorted embryos by Sidekick and Hancock. She is due to be scored in November. Hobby-Hill Holsteins started 14 years ago as a 4-H project that

Jeffrey-Way Drman Tavor-ET has racked up an impressive list of winnings in 2021. Most recently, she was named Junior Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show. She also did well in the International Holstein Show, placing third in the summer yearling class. Tavor is a Doorman daughter from a 92-point Corvette. Nine of her 11 dams are scored 91-points or higher and go back to the pride of Jeffrey-Way, Jeffrey-Way Mascot Tina EX-91 GMD DOM. The “T” family has been incredibly influential on the Hendrickson family’s farm as well as other dairies across the world. Over the course of the show reason, Tavor has done well locally and regionally for Emma Hendrickson. Before her World Dairy Expo win, she was the Reserve Junior Champion of the Wisconsin Summer Championship Junior Holstein Show, Holstein Heifer Champion and Reserve Supreme Heifer Champion at the Wisconsin State Fair Junior Dairy Show, and was the Junior Champion of the Green County Fair and Reserve Junior Champion at the District 6 Holstein Show. Tavor is bred and due to calve at the end of April for the 2022 show season. Emma has been showing since she was six and is a sophomore at New Glarus High School. Outside of Junior Holstein activities, she is active in FFA and 4-H and plays volleyball. Jeffrey-Way is home to 250 Registered Holsteins with 130 milking. The Hendrickson family breeds for cows with type that can still produce big records with solid fat and protein. Their average production is 29,000 pounds of milk with a 3.8 percent fat and 3.2 percent protein. Cows are housed in tie-stalls and freestalls. The farm consists of 315 acres of cropland where they grow corn, hay and oats. On their last classification, their BAA was 112.8 with 60 Excellent cows and 51 Very Good cows. Merchandising cows and embryos plays a critical role in the farm’s success. Many young cows and embryos are sold each year through private sales and consignments. potential to compete in the show ring. Junior Champion Bred & Owned: Vandoskes Denver Carmen-ET

Unix Chassup was named Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show. This was the icing on the cake for Chassup’s show career as heifer. In the spring of 2020, Jacob and Logan Harbaugh along with friends and neighbors Jacob and Erin Viergultz, purchased Chassup privately from MilkSource. Jacob and Erin were looking for a Registered Holstein project heifer at the time and Chassup fit the bill. “It has been very rewarding to watch Jacob Viergutz work very hard on the little details developing Chassup and being a big part of her success,” the Harbaughs say. Before earning her big title at World Dairy Expo, Chassup did well in the showring as both a fall calf and fall yearling. She was the fourth fall calf at the Midwest Fall National in 2020, and this year she was the fourth fall yearling and first junior at the Midwest National Spring Show. She also won her class at the District 7 Holstein Show and was second and first junior at the Wisconsin Summer Championship Show. At World Dairy Expo she was first Fall Yearling in the open and junior shows. Chassup is a Unix daughter of Trefle Chassep Doorman EX-94, with her fourth and later dams being, Regancrest S Chassity EX-92, Regancrest Champion Cinderella EX-92, and then Regancrest PR Barbie EX-92, respectively. She is due to calve in December and since Expo has been sold to Tom DeGroot. Her new residence will be at Ferme Jacobs in Quebec, Canada. The Harbaugh children are very active in Registered Holstein activities like showing, dairy bowl, judging and other contests as well as in their schools. Jacob, Logan and Madison are the children of Lynn and Sara Harbaugh in Marion. Jacob is a junior at Clintonville High School where he is the president of the FFA chapter and a member of the National Honor Society. He is also a member of the Shawano County Ag Ambassadors, is active in 4-H and works at a local farm on the weekends. Logan is a freshman at Clintonville High School where he is also involved in FFA and 4-H and he plans to play basketball and go out for track. Madison is in the fifth grade at St. Martin Lutheran School in Clintonville. She plays volleyball, basketball and softball as well as cheer. She is also involved in 4-H. Bella-View Holsteins sits on 20-acres and is home to 15 to 20 potential show heifers. The Harbaughs mostly work with Registered Holsteins but have also raised and developed a few colored breeds. Much of their herd is owned in partnership with Kurt and Sarah Loehr and their children Adella and Ainsley of Forest Ridge Holsteins, Eden. They house and care for the milk cows and the Harbaugh family works to raise and develop any heifers with the 20 – Wisconsin Holstein News – November 2021

The Vandoske family has had great success at World Dairy Expo with daughters of Vandoskes DB Carley-ET EX-91. Her Denver daughter, Vandoskes Denver Carmen-ET, is the most recent and was the winning spring calf and Junior Champion Bred & Owned of the International Junior Holstein Show. Carmen’s leadsperson, Brianne Vandoske, also had success in 2019 with Carmen’s sister, Vandoske Denver Cami-ET. Cami was Reserve Junior Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show and Junior Champion Bred and Owned. She was sold to Matt, Mark & Will Iager and Lucas Hetts before the open show where she placed second. She’s now owned by Beckridge, Enright, Quality and Agriber Societa (Italy) of Canada and is scored VG-87-CAN. Carley was the winning fall calf at the International Junior Holstein Show in 2017. Bob Vandoske sold her on the March Madness Sale the following year and she went on to be the Junior Champion of the Midwest National Spring Holstein Show for her owners, Andrew Hetke, Eric Wetenkamp and S & C Holschbach. “I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to buy back Carley in 2020,” Bob said. “I then went back to the wishing well and flushed her to Denver again which resulted in Carmen.” Carley is still on the farm and the Vandoske’s are flushing her regularly. They have sold daughters by Delta Lambda and eggs by Sidekick and Denver from her. The Vandoskes have several daughter by Denver, Sidekick, Delta Lambda and Jordy. World Dairy Expo has been the main stage for this cow family. Carley and Cami really came into their own later in the year when they were exhibited in Madison. Carmen had success throughout 2021. She was the first place spring calf at the Wisconsin State Fair Junior Dairy Show and fourth and second junior at the Wisconsin Summer Championship Holstein Show. All three developed into even better animals as the seasons changed to fall. Bob and Tara Vandoske have three children, Brianne, Reid and Brooklyn. Brianne is 13 and is in eighth grade. She’s active in school where she’s on the student council, choir and plays basketball, volleyball and soccer. She’s also the president of her 4-H club. Reid is 12 and in the seventh grade. He too is active in 4-H and plays basketball, football and baseball. When he gets a free moment, he likes to go fishing with his friends. The youngest of the Vandoske children is Brooklyn, 9. She’s in the fourth grade. Like her siblings she likes to remain active in 4-H and sports, playing basketball, soccer and fastpitch softball. “All three kids are very busy but make time for their daily chores and taking care of their show animals” Bob and Tara said. “They all

enjoy showing dairy animals and put a lot of work into them. We are very proud of their accomplishments in showmanship and in the ring and we are very humbled that the last two WDE Junior Champion Bred and Owned animals have been bred at our farm.” Vandoske Dairy Farms, Cleveland, is home to 560 milking cows with a herd average of 30,000 pounds of milk, 1000 pounds of fat and 850 pounds of protein on a three-time per day milking schedule. The dairy employs nine people and the family runs 1,100 acres of land. Junior Champion of the Show: Ms Reba Ravens Beauty-ET

A chance flush of Sherona-Hill Rachel Reba, VG-87, with pooled semen of Unix and Altitude before she headed to her new home in Mexico resulted in Ms Rebas Raven Beauty-ET. Raven was born as an ET calf on a different farm than where the Schmocker family raises animals. Nina ventured to pick up what Dave, her husband, called “one nice looking black calf.” From the start, she was always slightly bigger and more aggressive then her pen mate born the same day. It wasn’t until the end of March when Nina and Dave’s daughters, Tessa and Stella, started to perfect

No professional pictures? No problem! Something we hear every now and then from breeders is that they don’t have any professional pictures of their cows, and that is why they don’t want to place an ad. We say, that is ok! Over the past year, we have done a number of ads without professional cow pictures. We’ve used ring shots from our archives, Cowsmo or The Bullvine, pictures taken at the farm and so many other neat shots. We are happy to work with your barn candids, show pictures that we have taken or from the Bullvine or Cowsmopolitan or other images you have. Photos should be taken on a camera or be a high-quality phone image. Screenshots of photos will not be accepted. Contact Mara at 800-223-4269 ext. 2 or marab@ wisholsteins.com for more information.

leading her that the Schmockers got a good look at this balanced calf. Dave wasn’t quite sold, telling the girls if they crack the top 10 at Midwest Spring National Holstein Show they would be lucky. But he had to eat his hat that day when John Erbsen found her and placed her third in the open show, first in the junior show and then Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show. At the Jefferson County Fair, she won her class for Stella, was Junior Champion and Supreme Heifer and Best Bred & Owned. By that time, the girls had managed to rock, paper, scissors over who got to show her at each show. Raven is usually a dream to lead, and made a great showmanship animal for Tessa - or so they thought. But the heifer had other ideas at Wisconsin Junior State Fair and Tessa, 14, worked with a heifer that was a bit too stubborn during the showmanship contest. The pair did however capture first place in the second heat of the fall calf class, was best bred and owned of class, Champion Holstein Calf, Reserve Champion Holstein Heifer, Champion Bred & Owned Holstein Heifer and third Overall Supreme Champion Bred & Owned Heifer. Dave and Nina realized that Raven needed to be pushed a bit, and with late summer and fall being filled with Tessa starting her freshman year at Lakeside Lutheran High School and making it on the varsity golf team. Stella entered sixth grade at St. Paul’s Lutheran School and started being active in basketball and other school events. The Schmockers took Raven to Ben and Jen Wallace’s to get her on track for the Wisconsin Summer Championship Show and World Dairy Expo. Raven stood fifth in a deep class at the Wisconsin Summer Championship Holstein Show and eighth in the International Junior Holstein Show at the World Dairy Expo for Stella. On Friday, she was crowned Junior Champion of the International Holstein Show for new owners Glamorview, Iager and Walton. “Even though at that point we didn’t ‘own’ her we still feel humbled and proud,” Nina said. “She fulfilled every bit of our dreams. From a 6-acre farmette with six cows milking and a few heifers came a Raven Beauty.”

November 2021 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 21

Happy Fall, Holstein Friends, It’s my favorite time of the year, but I cannot believe how fast summer has come and gone! Emily and I stayed quite busy these last few months as we traveled to different district shows, attended State Show, breakfasts on the farm, and let’s not forget about State Fair! It was so nice to reunite with everyone after a year off and to be back in Madison for State Show again. One of my favorite highlights while being at State Fair was the All- Breeds Futurity. I was looking forward to this event ever since I was crowned and it was so much fun... until I awarded the first place cow and turned around to walk through a messy pile! Needless to say, thanks to Hailey Hendrickson, most known as “intern,” my dress and shoes were cleaned up in a matter of five minutes and looked brand new for pictures! As the days became cooler, I knew that World Dairy Expo was right around the corner! When Expo was cancelled last year, I knew the start of fall wouldn’t be the same. The last week of September to

the first week in October is when I meet up with friends in Madison one last time before we had school and no shows until the spring. The highlight each year was seeing who could guess what color the shavings would be! We always enjoy watching exceptional cattle grace the colored shavings and visiting the grilled cheese stand frequently. After the show is over, we start getting into winter and the colder months of the year, which means that Junior Holstein Convention is right around the corner. I encourage members to try something new at the convention, maybe that’s dairy bowl or sharpening your public speaking by participating in the speaking contest! All I can say is this year is flying by and time will not slow down. I feel so grateful for the opportunities I have had this year, along with the people I have met. In the upcoming months I hope to make even more memories as the WHA Princess. As the end of the year nears, royalty applications are now open. You can find them on the Wisconsin Holstein website and they are due November 5 to the Wisconsin Holstein Association office. If you have any questions don’t be shy, Emily and myself would love to talk more! Enjoy everything fall, Sincerely,

Zoe Ertel

Selz-Pralle Dairy hosts a successful Holstein Picnic The sun was shining, the weather was warm, and the cows were looking fantastic at Selz-Pralle Dairy for the Wisconsin Holstein Picnic on Saturday, October 9. Nearly 300 Holstein enthusiasts attended the event in Humbird. The dairy is known for balanced cows that exhibit type and production with longevity. It is also home to the former world record milk production cow Selz-Pralle Aftershock 3918 VG-88. Scott Pralle and Pam Selz-Pralle recognize that management plays a large role in the development in their kind of cows. Attendees saw their freestall housing, parlor and newly built positive pressure ventilation calf barn in addition to the outstanding cows in these facilities. Shuttles from the milking farm to the home farm where heifers and calves are housed ran constantly all day for attendees. At the home farm, the calf barn was a big hit among attendees. The newest structure at the farm features group housing and feeding with a positive pressure ventilation system. This has overall improved calf health at the farm. Attendees let loose and relaxed with local wine and charcuterie while admiring the landscaping around the Selz-Pralle home and shopping with A Farm Chick’s Closet and Deb’s Soap Essentials. Wood fire pizza was made by Kyes Guys Pizza, deep fried cheese curds were provided by the Clark County Holstein Association and everyone enjoyed nachos and root beer floats. Milk and water was generously donated by Kwik Trip. The parlor office featured an array of historical items from books,

to art and old milking equipment. Dave Christopherson of the La Crosse area brought in a display of Holstein True Type cows. Picnic attendees had an opportunity to judge three fantastic classes of cows. Winners in each division are as follows.

The Selz-Pralle Family: David Trimmer and Jessica Pralle-Trimmer, Scott Pralle, Pam Selz-Pralle, Nicole Pralle and Ryan Pralle.

We’re “Rebooting in 2022”! Convention Notes

New dates

- This year’s convention will be Tuesday-Thursday during the school break between Christmas and New Year. We will be looking for feedback on which time frame is better for future conventions.

Registration/Junior Agreement

- There will be a registration fee for the convention again this year to help cover convention expenses and rental fees. This includes anyone that will be in the facility to watch a junior contest. Everyone will be required to stop at convention registration to sign up and receive a name badge. - Junior members will need to have a parent’s signature on the Junior Behavior Agreement. The form will be emailed to all juniors who are pre-registered to complete before they travel to convention. - Entry to all meetings, meals, dance and events will require a name badge to verify registration starting at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s Highlights

- We listened to feedback from the last in-person convention that having Dairy Jeopardy & Dairy Bowl is a lot for those participating in both and have scheduled them on separate days. We are also starting the first day activities later in the day to allow for travel time. - Junior Forum and District Caucuses - this is your chance to bring up items for discussion that you’d like to see changed or added to Junior Holstein programming, plus meet the new JAC candidates! - Hypnotist/Magician and Game Night: It’s always a hoot to see how your friends react when you get hypnotized, as long as it’s not you they’re laughing at! Friendly games will be set up to play like Corn Hole, Animal Bingo and others! - Scavenger Hunt: Throughout the convention, youth will have the opportunity to “moo”ve around and complete the scavenger hunt to win prizes.

Wednesday’s Fun & Games

- It’s Dairy Bowl day! Juniors will compete in the morning, along with senior and intermediate speaking contestants. - Following the Princess Luncheon, Senior & Rookie Dairy Bowl contests will commence while senior and remaining intermediate speaking participants compete. - There will be plenty of opportunities to earn points for the Premier County contest in the Activity Room. Be sure to stop back often to see what new activities are available!

Thursday’s Wrap-Up

- Drag your friends out of bed... winners from the Contest Room will be handed out, the grand prize for Ticketmaster will be drawn, and Bell-R-Ring and Spirit Award winners will be announced!

Wisconsin Holstein Youth - JAC elections and the annual business meeting - Be sure to stick around to cheer on your favorite teams in the Dairy Bowl Finals! Immediately following both contests, we’ll hold a YQCA training session to fulfill your requirements for the 2022 show season.

Contest Room now the “Activity Room”

You asked, we listened. We’ve heard that juniors were looking for things to do when they weren’t competing in Dairy Jeopardy or Dairy Bowl. The former Contest Room will now be the “Activity Room” and will include the former contests along with new educational and fun activities that juniors can participate in any time the room is open. Ads, photos, crafts, and more! There are a ton of opportunities for recognition at junior convention in the Activity Room. Juniors can enter the Photography, Arts and Crafts, Folding Display, and Advertising contests. Drawing & Painting and Crafts has been combined into one contest with two divisions - junior and senior. For rules and age divisions of these contests, check out the Junior Handbook online on the junior awards page. All contest room entries must be taken or produced during 2021 by the junior member entering the project. Entries will be due by 5 pm on Tuesday, December 28. Due to low participation over the last few years, we have eliminated the scrapbook and banner contests. We do encourage groups to bring finished scrapbooks to the Activity Room to display their yearly activities - displayed scrapbooks will earn points for the Premier County contest. Looking for more ways to earn points? We’re bringing “Bovology” back, will have corn hole and different board games available to play and more surprises along the way.

A note from your JACs

Greetings Junior Holstein members and enthusiasts! We’re just about two months away from Junior Convention, and the JACs are busy getting ready to gather with everyone in Appleton on December 28 through 30. As the Junior Activities Committee looks forward to reconnecting with everyone at a much more normal Junior Convention this year, we are also looking to fill the JAC team for next year! We’ll be returning to the JAC elections everyone is used to, where candidates from each district will be selected in their respective caucuses and then voted on by all the convention attendees. This year, we have five spots that need to be filled, with a one-year and a two-year term JAC being elected for the Southeast district and a two-year position available in each of the other three districts. Being a JAC is truly a great way to become a leader in the association, and you make lifelong connections in the industry. If you or

Fellow Holstein Enthusiasts! Who can believe it’s already November? Not me! Since summer and show season has come to an end, that means winter is right around the corner. Although there weren’t that many events that happened in October, there was the most popular one, World Dairy Expo! When most people think of October, they think of the changing leaves and fall, but for us cow enthusiasts, we think of World Dairy Expo. This year I had the opportunity to be on the colored shavings both days of the International Holstein Show and for the International Junior Holstein Show. One of the best parts of being able to hand out awards on the colored shavings is knowing that you have just helped make a person’s dream come true. One of the many stories I have from Expo is the most comical. When I was carrying over the Grand Champion of the open show trophy, I had a few people say to me “Wow, that trophy is almost as big as you! If it was any bigger you would be dragging it!” They

weren’t wrong. If I wasn’t wearing heels that day, that trophy would have been up to my eyes! Needless to say, I think the photographers got a kick out of the fact that the trophies and banners were the same size as me. In October there also was the Wisconsin Holstein Association State Picnic at Selz-Pralle Farm in Humbird. It was an amazing time for Zoe and me! The family has an amazing set-up with beautiful animals! We got to walk around and be able to talk to people, ate some pizza and even got to do a little bit of shopping! What a great time with even better people. And congratulations to the new inductees to the Wisconsin Holstein Wall of Fame! The next big thing coming up is the junior convention from December 28-30. Who doesn’t love junior convention? Not only does that mean you will all be in my hometown Appleton, but also that means time for dairy bowl, jeopardy, speaking contest, and of course the awards banquet! I am thrilled to be having a convention again this year. With missing convection last year the beginning of the year just didn’t feel right. I hope to see all of you there! Sit down with you next time!

2021 Wall of Fame Inductees

Cow: EDR V I Angie Melvina EX-93 GMD DOM Todd Stanek traveled to the EDR Dispersal in Palmyra on March 24, 1992, having never met the Ron and Doris Marsh family or seen Melvina in person. His interest in Melvina was not that she had been a successful show cow but that she was a high scored cow that had a high index. The pictures he had seen of Melvina made him believe that she was a cow with strength to burn and that he could mate her to the big time milk and protein bulls of that time to try to make bulls for A.I. Stanek was blown away by her high, wide rear udder and her strength. Melvina became his first big time purchase of a Registered Holstein and time has proven this to be a good choice. Like a lot of cow stories, this one has a few twists and turns to it. While at the sale, Stanek could tell it was a hard day for the Marsh girls and he offered to leave Melvina with the girls and not transfer ownership until they had shown Melvina one more time at the spring show. They took him up on his offer, with Stanek traveling to the spring show to take her home afterwards. At the time of the sale, Melvina was confirmed pregnant to Blackstar. When Stanek arrived at the spring show and walked into the barn where she was stalled, the Marsh girls saw him and started crying. Melvina had lost the Blackstar pregnancy and was in heat and would not be shown that day. Stanek assured them that this was ok – he had purchased Melvina to flush her and this was great because he could take her home and start to flush her right away. Melvina turned out to be a great flush cow. Her first flush was to Mascot and made 25 good embryos. The result of that flush was four daughters that were the best two-year-olds in the barn at Our Favorite Holsteins. They scored 85, 86, 87 and 88 and they made the two-yearold milk records we ever had. Those four young cows brought the world to Our-Favorite Holsteins. The Melvina cow family has consistently, generation after generation, produced the best cows in the Stanek’s barn. Their logo and advertising slogan is “Our-Favorite Holsteins - Home of the Melvinas”. Currently over 70 percent of the herd are Melvinas. One of the Mascots from that first flush anchors the branch of the cow family that is going strong today. Our-Favorite Unlimited, EX-94, is the latest Melvina to bring the world to the farm and her EX-94 Doorman daughter, Endless, is turning out to be a great brood cow. This family has produced the popular sires Undenied, Mafia, On Point and Union and many heifers that are at the top of the PTA type lists. While Our Favorite Holsteins has certainly made “Melvina” well-

EDR V I Angie Melvina EX-93 GMD DOM

known worldwide, the Marsh family that bred Melvina considers her maternal pedigree to be just as influential. Melvina’s pedigree stems from a heifer purchased back several generations and the “Angelas” produced the best cows in their barn every generation, just like it has done for the Staneks. She was sired by Mel-Est Valiant Iros Melvin, a young sire that Ron Marsh used because he was $5 and he used young sire semen to save money. Melvin became a proven bull and Melvina his signature daughter. Melvina was a growthy heifer that the Marsh family showed and did well but didn’t win. She really blossomed when she calved as a threeyear-old. She was Reserve Grand Champion at the 1990 Wisconsin Spring Show and went on to be named Reserve Junior All-American Senior 3-Year-Old. Melvina scored EX-93 3E and earned GMD and DOM honors. In today’s world, they would say she was too big. At her thinnest, Stanek hauled her to town and she weighed in at 2085 pounds. But to this day, Melvina is the most graceful cow he has worked with. She lived in a stall, went out every day like all the other cows and never took a wrong step. Stanek states, “It was an honor and a privilege to get to work with Melvina. One cow can make a hell of a difference in your life. I want to congratulate the Marsh family for breeding such a great cow and thank them for sharing her with me.”

Bull: Sunnyside Standout-Twin VG-85 GM Sunnyside Standout was born in 1962 at Sunnyside Farms, owned by the Borgwardt family of Valders. He went into service at Tri-State Breeders in Westby, Wisconsin, later to be known as Accelerated Genetics. It is not a requirement that Wall of Fame bulls be born in a Wisconsin herd, rather it is required that they have passed the test time and are greatly appreciated by Wisconsin Holstein breeders. Standout checks all of the boxes. He was born in a Wisconsin breeder’s herd, was housed at a Wisconsin AI stud, and had thousands of highly appreciated daughters in many Wisconsin herds. Standout was born to not just any herd. The Borgwardt family has provided exemplary leadership to the Wisconsin Holstein Association for generations, including Todd and Susan Borgwardt, who continue to operate Sunnyside Dairy Farms today. For many years Todd’s grand30 – Wisconsin Holstein News – November 2021

father, Elroy Borgwardt, was Wisconsin’s national Holstein board representative. Elroy’s sons, Roger and Bill, were also active in WHA and both served as WHA President. In the July 10, 1978 Standout Issue of the Holstein World, Elroy Borgwardt stated “Standout didn’t just happen. He was bred to sire offspring that are profitable for production along with desirable type.” At Tri-State Breeders, Standout had at least 11,000 daughters in his production proof in nearly 3,000 herds and over 5,000 daughters classified. We know that proofs erode over time, but at the time, Standout was an exceptional production bull with sound type, just as Elroy said he had been bred to be. The road to success for Standout was not an easy one. Marlowe Nelson contracted his dam, later to be a 93 point cow, for Tri-State,

but Standout was born five weeks early and the twin did not survive. It was her third set of mixed twins. Long before genomics, an animal had to look the part to be accepted to an AI program and Standout was barely hanging on. Standout made it to Tri-State at nine months and was sampled. At the time, breeders wanted larger cattle, unlike today when there is concern about cows becoming too large. Standout himself was not big, he scored VG-85 and was Gold Medal. Another piece of his rocky start, at the time during their waiting period after initial sampling, Tri-State farmed their bulls out for natural service. Standout went to the Columbia County Hospital farm where he refused to service any cows. Of course they contemplated selling the bull, but they didn’t quite pull the trigger. As heifers, they were not standouts and they went unnoticed. When the daughters began freshening, he stamped a pattern of great production, sound udders and legs, and good capacity, but they came in all sizes, high fat test and low, spotted like Standout’s sire Burkgov or not speckled at all. At the time, many breeders were interested in following specific families in the breed. By the end of Standout’s career that was not so much the case. Standout’s dam was by an Oostie bred bull and

Person: Emil Titel, Plymouth

The 2021 Wisconsin Holstein Wall of Fame Honoree is Emil Titel of Plymouth, the renowned breeder of several of the foundation cows and bulls of the breed in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Emil Titel was born in 1874 at Glenbeulah, Wisconsin and after graduation from public schools he started farming with his father in 1904 and purchased some heifers in 1906 that became the foundation of three important families. Emil Titel’s principal cow families - the Vickery Vales, the Klazerinas and the Little Gifts - were influential in the Charles Konop, John Pester, Pabst Farms, John Hetts’ Crescent Beauty-Admirals, Kyland, Osborndale, Dunloggin, Pinehurst and Wisconsin Reformatory herds. Emil Titel’s influence can be seen in the pedigree of Wisconsin Admiral Burke Lad VG-GM. His sire, Wisconsin Admiral Burke, has four Vickery Vale females in a row that were bred by Titel on the maternal side. He also bred the Admiral Ormsby Fobes son who sired Burke Lad’s dam. Vickery Vale 79278, born in 1905, lived to twenty years of age and it was her daughters and granddaughters mated with Admiral Ormsby Fobes that guaranteed Titel’s success. Titel purchased half interest in him for $7500. He sired amazing production and his daughters had great individuality and type and breeding power. Admiral Ormsby Fobes was the second calf from Wisconsin Fobes the 5th, once called “the greatest cow who ever lived”. An Admiral Ormsby Fobes daughter, Vickery Vale

that qualified him to fit in the Homestead program. Here is another mark for Standout as a uniquely Wisconsin bull. Many today do not understand what it means to be a Homestead animal. Homestead breeders were based mainly in Wisconsin and advocated for a cow with a rugged constitution combined with dairyness. While we have lost the recognition of Homestead breeding today, they are somewhere in the pedigree behind nearly every animal of the Holstein breed today. Standout’s sire is another story of the early 1960’s. Most matings were limited by the distribution area of the local AI center and frozen semen was a fairly new thing. Still, Standout’s sire, Burkgov Inka Dekol, was sourced out of Utah at Cache Valley Breeders and was one of the elite sires of the day. He was a grandson of Wisconsin Admiral Burke Lad, the foundation of the Burkes and the key sire at Pabst Farms and bred at the Green Bay Reformatory. Standout was in active service at Tri-State for seven years and was put to sleep at 12 years of age and buried on the grounds at Tri-State. Some interesting Standout statistics: - He was used heavily at Sunnyside farm, nine of his first 13 daughters there scored Excellent. Three Sunnyside sons later scored Excellent and several were in active service at Tri-State. - Other Wisconsin bred Excellent daughters included Gray-View Cocoa Standin, Wyss Homestead Sando, Kaderly Standout Pearl, Vigo Standout Vanity and Stetzerlann Standout Silver. - His highest scored daughter, JPG Standout Kandy EX-96 2E GMD, was All-American Aged Cow in 1977 and admired by many yet today. - There were hundreds of sons of Standout. In addition to the Sunnyside bred sons, another impressive son was Ca-Lill Standout Cavalier GM. Through Cavalier, Standout is a major foundation in Red and White and Black and White breeding even though Standout himself was not a Red Carrier. Other sons with many offspring include Hill-Haven Standout Job, Limestone Standout Strephon and Thumb-Pride Perfector. Born in 1962 and recognized today in 2021, in reflection Standout was a very modern kind of bull, he made great ones for the show ring but also were appreciated in farmer-breeder herds across the

Mechthilde Ormsby, provided the Admiral component of the Crescent Beauty-Admiral line. She was purchased by John Hetts in the 1927 National Blue Ribbon Sale in Waukesha. She calved with twins - a bull and a heifer. The heifer proved to be a breeder, and the twins were mated twice to produce two great sires: Admiral Vale of Rock and Admiral King Fobes EX. In addition, Queen Pearl Fobes of Rock was the result of a mother-son mating, Admiral Ormsby Fobes of Rock-Twin to his own dam. The Klazerina Della family was developed by Emil Titel. Admiral Ormsby Fobes was mated with a member of this family, and the resulting heifer, Klazerina Champion Fobes, was mated with Sir Ormsby Beechwood, a son of Admiral, resulting in Klazerina Champion Fobes 3d who was Grand Champion at the Wisconsin State Fair. Fobes 3d was mated to a Montvic Pathfinder son resulting in Klazerina Champion Rag Apple who was then mated with a Triune-Della sire to produce Klazerina Della. Della was mated with a son of her own granddam to produce Klazerina Della 2d EX, the Pride of Pinehurst, who was purchased from the Titels by David Bachmann, the young owner of Pinehurst Farms, Sheboygan Falls, in 1951 for $1250. Klazerina Della 2d would prove to have an early positive influence on the Pinehurst herd through herd sires continued on page 32

Admiral Comet 21st and Pinehurst Klazerina Champion EX and her daughters Klazerina Della Gift EX and Pinehurst Klazerina Symphony VG-87. A third family that resulted from Titel’s original purchase of heifers in 1906 were the Little Gifts who had a lesser influence but can be found behind some of the Dunloggin cattle. By all accounts Emil Titel, especially after the Admiral Ormsby Fobes daughter came into production, owned an amazing herd. Harry Hill, President of the Wisconsin Dairymen’s Association wrote of Emil Titel in 1937: “In spite of the many honors bestowed upon him by fellow breeders,

Mr. Titel remains as modest as can be. While he revels in discussing cattle at all times, he had never been heard boasting of his own. His feats stamp him as a breeder of the highest caliber. There are few men held in higher esteem by his fellow workers than Mr. Titel. Yet through it all he works quietly and if you want to call on Emil Titel, the chances are you will find him in the barn working with his cows as he has been doing for the last 33 years.” Emil Titel died in 1952 at the age of 78 years. The farm and herd were continued by his son Arthur Titel who sold out in 1957 at a Bairdmanaged auction with an average of $365 on 37 milking age females. Pinehurst Farms purchased the high seller Bonny Comet Beauty 2d, whose sire and dam were Admiral Comet offspring for $875.
