Eddie Bue of Kaukauna, Wis., judged the show. Nehls-Valley Holsteins, Hustisford, picked up second and third place with Nehls-Valley AW Limited-Red and Nehls-Valley Sidekick Sisco, respectively. Limited-Red was also awarded best udder of the show. Sam Pitterle, Watertown, was first place junior with Smith-Crest Dback Vixen-ET, and Ian Spoke, Waterloo, was second place junior with Northcrest Toohot 3318. Sam Pitterle was best dressed female; Treyton Hildebrandt, Hustisford, was best dressed male; and Hildebrandt Family Farm, Hustisford, was named best dressed group. An impressive 139 animals were entered as calves for this year’s show, and 24 of those entries were exhibited as cows. Numerous businesses in the Dodge-County area provide monetary donations to sponsor the futurity every year; Compeer Financial was the champion-level sponsor for 2021. UNMATCHED DOMINANCE!

Dairy cattle judging is strong at the University of Minnesota,

so strong that its teams have placed 1st overall in 8 of the 15 contests held over the past 5 years at the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). Also, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st or 2nd overall in 20 of the 30 contests in these 3 contests over the past 10 years. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. If you want a career in the dairy industry, consider the University of Minnesota. In addition to participating in our highly successful dairy judging and dairy challenge

programs, you can join the Gopher Dairy Club, whose student members gain experience and industry contacts through many activities such as an all-expense-paid 10-day senior trip to California in January. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority. Learn more today at ansci.umn.edu

Endless Opportunities Scholarships Last year Dairy Science awarded nearly $100,000 to our incoming and current majors. Award amounts ranged from $1,500 to $5,000. Applying for scholarships is made easy through a Common Scholarship Application that makes you eligible for university, college and departmental scholarships. Additionally, one third of fulltime freshmen received federal financial aid last year in the form of grants, loans and work study. You can contact scholarships@cals.wisc.edu with any questions.

Badger Dairy Club a World Dairy Expo

Student Organizations

Hands-On Experiences

Badger Dairy Club has over 80 members who all share a passion for the dairy industry. Joining a student organization such as BDC is a great way for you make a large state university feel like a small college because you have an instant peer group on campus. BDC creates opportunities for members to engage in activities and experiences within the college, community, and the ever-changing dairy industry. Highlights of the club’s activities include an integral role in managing and working at World Dairy Expo, hosting the Badger Invitational Sale, volunteering at the Wisconsin 4-H Dairy Bowl and FFA Dairy Judging Contests, and club trips.

Our major requires an internship which allows you to gain hands-on experiences. Whether it is working in animal health, dairy nutrition, farm management, A.I., or sales and marketing you learn while gaining valuable work experience. A one-of-a-kind opportunity for our students is the Dairy Nutrition Experience course sponsored by Purina. This provides students with a mentored, hands-on dairy management experience, networking opportunities with producers and industry professionals and increased awareness of career options within the field of dairy nutrition. And finally, we have cows on campus! The Dairy Cattle Instruction and Research Center is located within one block of dairy classroom buildings, providing access to cows during all lab sessions.

Learn to Lead. Learn to Succeed.

Competitive Excellence Dairy Judging

Dairy Challenge UW-Madison is committed to its students receiving a “Dairy Challenge” experience. In fact, within the curriculum we have the Nutrition Experience, Dairy Herd Management Practicum and Dairy Challenge courses where students are mentored on how to analyze a commercial farm and present their observations and management recommendations, honing skills that translate directly to this competition and their future careers. Our students participate competitively at the Midwest and National North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge competitions. At the 2021 Virtual National Contest, UW was one of ten teams earning recognition. We feel the ability of our students to excel in this competitive format speaks to the quality of their education. UW Dairy Science majors graduate with a sophisticated knowledge of the science of dairying, and they learn to communicate their expertise.

UW-Madison’s dairy judging program has a tradition of success that continues today. At the National Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest UW has won the contest 9 times since 1985. Since 1980 we have been in the top 5 placing teams in all but 4 contests. Our coaches are highly regarded for their “cow ability” and talent to teach students about functional type and presenting winning oral reasons. The judging team normally numbers about 15 students with each of them guaranteed a contest to compete in. In fact, a majority of team members will participate in three or four contests over their collegiate judging career. The dairy judging team competes in the fall and we send teams to the Pennsylvania All-American (PA), North American (KY), Fort Worth Stock Show (TX) and World Dairy Expo (WI) contests.

2021 Iowa Holstein Association Picnic Several Holstein enthusiasts enjoyed the day at New Day Dairy for the 2021 Iowa Holstein Association Picnic. Thank you to the Dan & Lynn Bolin and family for hosting this year’s picnic! New Day Dairy is owned and operated by Dan & Lynn Bolin along with their family. Rita the robot (the first AMS Galaxy in Iowa) has milked their 120 cows since 2015 in a new naturally vented freestall barn with a GuestBarn overlooking it. Guests from across the country come to #sleepwiththecows and experience the grandeur of the Holstein cow. Their exclusively Holstein herd milks 3.0x/day with 4.25%F and 3.05%P. They raise all their own replacements and grow most of their crops on 200+ acres. Although Dan has purchased quality Registered Holstein heifers & cows from others, he is most proud of the homegrown breeding he has done creating great healthy productive dairy cows. Today Dan breeds for health & wellness, calving ease, high components, and robot characteristics. Dan is quick to use the best polled and sometimes red and white bulls (especially for the kids).

Think of those beautiful, fashionable F1 calves that can be directly entered in the Red and White Herd Book with a $10 Certificate of Identification (CID) from the Holstein Association. They can then be entered in many of the Red and White Open Shows in several states. And they’ll also be eligible for most Junior Dairy Shows throughout the United States.

Consider for your herd a round of embryos from Karuba by Altitude, Unstoppable, Jordy, Warrior, or Diamondback! Think of the benefit in hybrid vigor for health and reproduction.

Regardless of your breed of choice or your country of origin, Karuba is one to look at while you’re at World Dairy Expo.

35th Annual WHA All-Breeds Futurity

August 14, 2021 • Wisconsin State Fair Park, West Allis • Judge: Brian Kelroy

The 35th Annual WHA All-Breeds Futurity, or “Cow Prom” as many state fair attendees call it, was held Saturday, August 14 in West Allis, Wis. Judge Brian Kelroy of Deforest, Wis., judged and placed seven outstanding 3-year-old cows. A total of $5,483 in purse money and special awards was split amongst the owners of the seven entries that competed at the show. Coming out on top was Dreamfix Splash of Sun-ET exhibited by Landon and Mylie Wendorf, Kylie Nickels, and Christian Sachse, Ixonia. They took home a $1,500 prize sponsored by Compeer Financial, as well as Best Bred & Owned sponsored by Wisconsin Holstein Association and Best Udder of Show sponsored by CentralStar Cooperative. Second place went to Ryan-Vu Doorman Maiti-ET exhibited by Ryan-Vu Holsteins of Fond du Lac. They were awarded $750 sponsored by International Protein Sires. Third place was awarded to Milgene Jezabels Dream-Red exhibited by Hildebrandt Family Farm of Hustisford. They received $500 sponsored by Agropur. The top placing junior owned entry was How-Law Defender Raindrop exhibited by Dana Johnson of Tomah. She was presented an award sponsored by Angela Davis Brown, Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys, and a $50 prize sponsored by the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. Top Milk Production and Top Fat and Protein Production was awarded to Milgene Defiant Triday exhibited by Hildebrandt Family Farms. They were awarded two $25 cash prizes sponsored by Brian Greenman, Rural Mural Insurance Agent. While the show is focused on the cows, their exhibitors were also looking their finest to compete for Best Dressed Awards. Best Dressed Junior went to Dana Johnson, Tomah, sponsored by the Barron County Junior Holstein Association. Ty Hildebrandt of Hustisford won Best Dressed Adult Male sponsored by Robert and Karyn Schauf. Yvonne Preder of Scenic-Edge Holsteins sponsored the Best Dressed Adult Female award, which was given to Amy Ryan of Fond du Lac. The evening’s program was led by the Mistresses of Ceremonies, Jill Makovec and Nicole Breunig. They introduced the dignitaries in attendance, cows, and award sponsors. Tim Baumgartner was in attendance as a representative for Compeer Financial, and representing International Protein Sires was Ron Sersland, owner. Royalty from across Wisconsin attended the event as well, including Zoe Ertel, Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess; Emily Stumpf, Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Attendant, Julia Nunes, Alice in Dairyland; and Cayley Vande Berg, Wisconsin Fairest of the Fair. The Wisconsin Holstein Association All-Breeds Futurity would not be possible without the generous donations from our major sponsors, Compeer Financial, International Protein Sires, and Agropur. We would also like to thank all of the committee members, volunteers, and additional sponsors that helped make this event possible. We hope we will see everyone at the 2022 WHA All-Breeds Futurity Show at next year’s Wisconsin State Fair. 32 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2021

Ready, Set, Judge Clinics hosted by Junior Activities Committee Following the success of the Ready, Set, Show! clinics in 2020, the Junior Activities Committee was excited to offer a pair of dairy judging clinics in July. The JACs coordinated the clinics with Dr. Katharine Knowlton, dairy judging team coach at Virginia Tech. Dr. Knowlton is very enthusiastic about dairy judging and has over 30 years of experience working with youth of all ages. She created “Dairy Judging 101” on social media in 2020 to help youth perfect their judging skills and has taken that information on the road to present at clinics across the country. The two workshops were hosted by Budjon Farms on Saturday, July 24, and Tree-Hayven Holsteins on Sunday, July 25. Approximately 2530 youth attended each of the clinics and learned new techniques for identifying and prioritizing traits in cows and heifers, taking notes and giving reasons. Assisting Dr. Knowlton at the Budjon clinic were George Sebright, VA Tech student and summer intern at Brey Cycle Farm, and Brian Kelroy, UW-Madison dairy judging coach. Mandi Kipp, Holstein USA field rep and VA Tech graduate, assisted at Tree-Hayven. Working in two groups, the clinic attendees spent time talking about priorities when judging cows and heifers. When judging cows, Dr. Knowlton offered a technique of remembering we want “good uddered, dairy cows with functional feet and legs” and sorting a class based on those priorities – udder, dairy character, and feet and legs, then size, then the rest of the frame. Details like toplines, tail settings or shoulders can be considered after sorting the class into pairs. For heifers, the technique is the same but judges should focus on the big picture of correctness (“TopsRumpsLegs”), dairyness and size. Identifying each animal with a simple “yes” or “no” to those categories will help get the class sorted into correct pairs. Dr. Knowlton showed examples of the ideal for each of those categories, some variations and how much the variations should be considered for final placings. From there, smaller details can be considered in order to finalize a placing. Following lunch, the juniors worked on TAQ questions and how to evaluate each of the traits to answer those questions during a contest. Seniors spent some time talking about evaluating individual cows and taking notes to be better prepared for reasons. Dr. Knowlton encourages youth to come up with a system of abbreviations or drawings when analyzing a class so they don’t spend time writing out full words for all of

22 – Wisconsin Holstein News – October 2021

their notes. She also wants her students to spend time writing descriptive notes for each cow before considering how the class is placed and then using those notes to make comparative reasons. Her rules for giving oral reasons include: 1. Always compare cows rather than describe them (use “-er” words). 2. Within a pair of cows, start with the most important and obvious difference. 3. Once you’ve decided what to talk first, organize your reasons. Don’t bounce back and forth between categories. 4. Be specific, be very specific and then be more specific. Knowlton said her goal is to help youth develop a system to evaluate animals, allowing them to be more comfortable with what they are doing which should lead to confidence in their thoughts and decisions. “I love teaching judging skills, especially to kids this age,” she said. “The parents might get them started, and then … expectations start to get higher, and they don’t feel like they know what they are doing. Nobody likes doing something when you feel like that. This type of workshop isn’t necessarily teaching them to win a contest, but it can give them a little confidence to go on and continue to learn and ask questions.” The Junior Activities Committee would like to thank Dr. Knowlton for her very engaging presentations and for taking time to travel to Wisconsin for the clinics. A big thank you also goes to those that assisted at each clinic and both farms for all the prep work done in order to help make the day a success.

Bob and Kay Zwald Selected as National Dairy Shrine Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder Bob and Kay Zwald, the husband and wife team from Bomaz, Inc., Hammond, Wisconsin, are National Dairy Shrine’s Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder Award winner for 2021. This annual award goes to an active, progressive dairy breeder who excels in the management of a dairy herd based on sound genetic and business principles. The Bomaz prefix is a household name in Holstein circles, known for its profitable, productive cows with high components and breed-leading bulls in A.I. programs. Three generations of the Zwald family have been involved in this farm since it was established by Bob’s parents and later taken over by Bob and his brother Greg in the 1970s. From a herd of 25, and then 100 cows, in a tie-stall barn, the herd expanded in 1996 to 400 cows in a freestall barn and parlor set-up. Bob and Kay took over the farm about ten years ago and today operate it with two of their five children and their spouses – Annette (Steve Schalla) and Tom (Ashley). Bob is the farm manager and in charge of the genetics program, while Kay is the calf manager. A recent expansion at the farm has added two more sand bedded free-stall barns and a 40-stall rotary parlor enabling the Zwalds to now milk a total of 1,500 cows, in addition to raising 1,200 heifers. Cows are fed a TMR once a day with most roughage and grain raised on the farm’s 2,500 acres. This entirely registered Holstein herd, which is 98.7% homebred, has classified and production tested since the beginning. Bob and Kay place a high focus on genetics in their breeding program. They aim for that “blue-collar” working cow who will be profitable, long living and thrive in a commercial environment. Their custom selection index places 50 percent emphasis on production traits (fat and protein) and 50 percent on health traits. The Zwalds genomic test all of their calves to identify those with superior genetics. The highest females enter their extensive embryo transfer program. Each week four or five donor animals are conventionally flushed at Bomaz, while every other week 25-30 animals undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF). They implant 400 embryos each month. Approximately 40% of their calves are the result of embryo transfer. Bob’s genetic insight, combined with quick adoption and recognition of new breeding tools and traits, has consistently led this Wisconsin farm to breed some of the highest Holstein animals for Net Merit (NM$) and TPI in the world. The Zwalds have bred 121 Gold Medal Dams, 80 Dams of Merit, 11 Gold Medal Sires, and 1,415 cows with over 100,000 lbs. milk lifetime, all with the Bomaz prefix. They have earned Holstein Association USA’s Progressive Genetics Herd Award for 30 straight years and won the Herd of Excellence Award three times. They have exported bulls and embryos to eight foreign countries with bulls like Maxdairy Nihoro-ET in Japan, and Bomaz Eurostar and Bomaz RUW Mystic PP in Germany, all very popular in those countries. The Zwalds have been supplying A.I. organizations with high quality Holstein sires since 1979. In total, more than 450 bulls carrying the Bomaz prefix have entered A.I. programs around the world in the last 40+ years.

Bomaz was one of the leading herds making A.I. sires prior to the introduction of genomics, and they continue to be a major source today sending 40-50 bulls per year to A.I. studs. Nearly every cow at Bomaz traces to one of two cows. The first cow that “put Bomaz on the genetic map” was Bomaz Valiant Daphne (VG-88-GMD-DOM). Daphne had nine sons in A.I. with the most impactful being Bomaz Destruction. Many outstanding females from this line have become “bull mothers” like Bomaz Daggat D Pizza, and Bomaz Yoder 6993 and her daughter Bomaz Topshot 7892. A number of breed-leading TPI and NM$ bulls like Bomaz Marion Emerald 648-ET and the recent Bomaz AltaTopshot-ET, a former number one NM$ sire from the Pizza branch, originate from this family. The second influential brood matron at Bomaz was Dalse Bomaz 1551 (EX-90GMD-DOM), who was purchased as a heifer in 1996. Many respected bulls have come from the 1551 family like Bomaz Homestead, Bomaz Boulder-ET and Bomaz Skywalker-ET. On the female side, one of the most significant members has been Bomaz Numero Uno 5904-PO, whose line has resulted in some of the most highly sought after Polled genetics in the breed and produced such bulls as Bomaz Monument-P-ET and Bomaz Atomic-PP-ET. Honest, hardworking, full-time dairy farmers, Bob and Kay are very active in their community and the dairy industry. Bob has judged many fairs in Wisconsin and Minnesota. He, along with Charles Kruschke, have coached the St. Croix County 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Team for more than 40 years. More than 35 of those St. Croix judging teams have gone on to compete at the state level, with four capturing first place and the 1983 team winning the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging title at World Dairy Expo. Kay is a Director for Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin and previously served as a Director for the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin. She was on the local school board for 25 years, spent many years as a 4-H leader, and several years on the St. Croix County Fair Board. Very involved in their church, Kay is just finishing up a four-year term on the church’s leadership team. She is also part of the St. Croix County Dairy Promotion Committee and its Farm City Committee which annually organizes a day at a farm that draws thousands of visitors. Bob and Kay Zwald will be presented with the Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder Award at National Dairy Shrine’s Awards Banquet on Thursday, September 30th in Madison, Wisconsin. Their portrait will then be displayed in National Dairy Shrine’s Dairy Hall of Fame and Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. For more information about National Dairy Shrine, the banquet or this year’s award winners, please contact National Dairy Shrine at info@dairyshrine.org or visit their website at www.dairyshrine.org.
