Wisconsin Holstein Updates

From the President Pam Selz-Pralle The cows aren’t aware that there’s a pandemic going on. So, they continue as if nothing happened! I wish we could say the same about WHA Holstein events. After much board discussion weighing our desire to gather versus social distancing compliance and attendee safety, we opted to cancel the 2021 convention. For you history buffs, the 1945 convention was also cancelled when the Office of War Mobilization requested that no meetings over 50 people be held. While we will miss socializing and talking cows together, your staff is again calling a COVID “audible” and making plans to recognize award winners throughout the summer. Keep watching the NEWS and WHA Facebook page for details. “We need a show!” That rallying plea echoed last summer. In spite of numerous obstacles, volunteer leaders and WHA staff delivered. For 2021, WHA is gearing up to host Spring Show. We can have some competition, connect with friends, and simply “hang with our people.” Virtual meetings may be the trend (if you’re lucky enough to have good internet), but we are hands-on farm people. I can’t wait until a show or Holstein event to shake your hand, share a cow story, or simply enjoy the company of Holstein breeders. As I struggle to find milking gloves, other farm supplies and at times toilet paper, I’ve come to appreciate all the access we enjoy here in America. I’m tremendously grateful for GMO technology which was pivotal in developing COVID vaccines. At Wisconsin Holstein, we are very fortunate to have a committed staff who love Holsteins and are devoted to serving the membership. This past year, every event was loaded with “audible” play calling. They never wavered. Laura, Mara, and Charitee – the membership appreciates you.

Obituaries Vickie Mowbray

Vickie Mowbray, age 59, of Hollandale, died on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison from a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born on September 29, 1961, a daughter of Philip and Judy Mowbray. She graduated from Cuba City High School. She worked at Advance Transformer, Lands’ End for 25 years, the VIP and Stroz Inn in Hollandale. Vickie was a go-getter and never sat still. She did so much for whoever needed anything and just stepped in and helped anyway she could. She cooked for the many parties she was involved with. She could brighten anyone’s day with her actions and wisecracks. Through the Wisconsin Holstein Association, Vickie enjoyed helping at adult conventions and serving meals at special events including the last State Championship Show hosted in Iowa County. Her fun-loving energy and baking skills were a hit at adult conventions as she enjoyed donating to the dessert auctions. In the beginning it took some convincing for Vickie to attend adult convention when Mark Gilbertson began serving on the board, but after her first experience she was always the first in the truck waiting for Mark to travel to the convention! Vickie is survived by her partner Mark Gilbertson of Hollandale; mother Judy Brimeyer of East Dubuque; her siblings Mary (Dan) Bussan of East Dubuque and Phil (Ann) Mowbray of Platteville; her sister-in-law Sheri Mowbray of Marshfield; Mark’s children Jennifer (Brian) Arvidson of Hartford and Erik (Brenda) Gilbertson of Hollandale; Mark’s grandchildren Nick, Lindsay, Makenna, Elise, Naydeen, Janelle and one on the way; her nephews, a niece, great nieces and great nephews, several aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends. She was proceeded in death by her dad Phil Mowbray, Sr., her brother Terry Mowbray, her great niece Lydia Pluemer, her grandparents and her Jack Russel terrier “Ruben.” A Celebration of Life for Vickie will be held in summer of 2021. Cynthia Long

Cynthia Ruth Long (nee Peterson), 80, of Waupaca, was welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven on January 17, 2021 surrounded by family. She passed away from complications of Parkinson’s disease. She leaves her husband of over 58 years, Donald Long, along with family and friends. She was born on September 27, 1940 in Scandinavia, Wisconsin to Clarence and Ruth (Blihovde) Peterson. Cindy grew up on the Peterson Mill Stream Dairy Farm where she especially enjoyed helping with large vegetable gardens as well as swimming and skating on the pond. She graduated from the Peterson Mill one-room schoolhouse and

Scandinavia High School before attending UW-Stout to become a teacher. Cindy was a teacher for over 30 years, mostly teaching Home Economics at Weyauwega Fremont High School. She loved teaching. Cindy was a natural at sharing knowledge and making learning fun. She met her husband, Donald Wayne Long, through her family’s Registered Holsteins. On July 7, 1962, Cynthia and Donald were married at Scandinavia Lutheran Church. After they were married, they moved to Weyauwega. Don and Cindy, with Don’s brother and wife, operated Belleview Farms of Weyauwega milking about 100 cows. Family was very important to Cynthia Ruth. She valued time with her husband, children, grandchildren, siblings, and extended family. She shared her thoughtful generous kindness with so many. Along with spending time with family, Cindy enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, doing puzzles, traveling, watching Wisconsin sports, and helping others. She was proud of her Swedish and Norwegian heritage. Cynthia Ruth loved making and eating lefse with her immediate and extended family. She was a 4-H member and leader for many years. Cynthia’s patience was clearly evident as she taught others the love of sewing. Cynthia enjoyed judging clothing and food projects at many local county fairs. She was actively involved in her local homemakers group, serving in many officer positions at the club and county level. During the early years of their marriage, Cindy and Don opened their home and heart to several foster children. Cindy, with the help of other parents, hosted the first local Junior Holstein Association meeting in her family room. Cynthia also impacted many youth in the area by serving on the Fox Valley Technical College Board of Directors for many years. Cindy was actively involved in their church, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Weyauwega where she taught Sunday School for many years, served on the church council, and represented the church on Bethany Board of Directors. Cindy especially enjoyed helping with the quilting ministry, the church bazaar, and the Spring Women’s banquet. Breeder Profile

District 1: Rainbow Valley by Brittany Olson Going for a drive on a late summer evening in western Barron County is nothing short of spectacular, especially on the county road heading north out of Almena. Fields of corn, alfalfa, sunflowers, and pumpkins unfold across the gently rolling countryside as you approach the Wohlk farm, and the sight of black-and-white and redand-white cows heading out of the barn into a setting sun on their way to night pasture is a view that is particularly Wisconsin-esque. For over 100 years, the Wohlk family has carefully stewarded the farm that they call home. Glen and Susan are the third generation on the farm, and transition plans are in the works for their sons, Clayton and Kurt, and their wives, Becky and Mari-Lyn, to take over the farm so Glen can retire from ownership. Glen and Clayton are involved in day-to-day operations on the farm. Kurt owns a flatbed trucking business named for the river that runs through their farm, Hay River Hauling, and helps as much as he can on the farm when he’s home. Their herd of 60 Registered Holsteins produces a rolling herd average of 22,000 pounds per year with a 4.1 percent butterfat and 3.1 percent protein. In addition to their dairy herd, the Wohlks also crop 500 acres of corn, alfalfa, rye for forage and seed, pumpkins, and sunflowers. The wetlands behind their barn and a quarter mile away create a rainbow-shaped valley, hence the name Rainbow Valley (prefix shortened to Almena Bow-Valley). “My great-grandpa Christ helped build the barn in 1919 and then purchased the barn and 80 acres in 1926,” said Clayton. “He loved the barn because of the tall haymow, and the swamp behind the barn for water. That swamp being nearby is no longer an asset as we are always doing things to protect it.” Christ’s sons, Calvin (Glen’s father) and Gilbert, took over the farm and doubled the size of the herd to 60 cows in 1962, also adding several parcels of land. The brothers began breeding Registered Holsteins under the Al-Wis prefix when Glen started showing cattle. When Glen took over ownership of the cows, he started the Bow-Valley prefix. Clayton came home to farm after graduating from UW-Madison in 2009, and a new heifer barn was built in 2013. “After I came back to the farm following college, we were in need of bigger and better heifer facilities. I was a relief breeder for three years and saw a lot of really nice and really terrible heifer barns,” Clayton said. “I was able to take all of the things I liked from all the different barns and we built a new heifer facility in 2013. We were able to move the dry cows out of the barn and keep the stalls full of milking cows since then.” The herd’s first Excellent cow, Al-Wis Thor Peg, lives on through several generations of offspring at Rainbow Valley. 8 – Wisconsin Holstein News – January/February 2021

“[Peg] was also one of the last cows registered under the AlWis prefix. I was able to skip school to watch her get flushed once to Rudolph and once to Encore. She had a natural Lieutenant go Excellent and one of the Encores went Excellent, who we flushed as well. We haven’t flushed much since, but nearly half of our herd can be traced back to Thor Peg,” Clayton said. Aside from purchasing a show calf at the 1997 Barron Spring Sale, Indianhead BL Magic Spirit, Clayton said every animal taken to fairs and shows was bred and owned at Rainbow Valley. “We always had bred and owned animals in the showring, and we were able to be very proud of that. We didn’t win too many classes, but we were always happy with bringing our best homebred cows to the fairs and pulling out a big win every once in a while,” he added. “We haven’t showed anything since Kurt graduated. I’d imagine we will start putting that into the summer activities when my daughter Cora gets big enough in a handful of years. We really enjoyed doing the junior shows as a family, and I think another generation will too.” The Wohlks’ breeding philosophy is to create trouble-free cows that are enjoyable to milk with strength, sound legs, dairyness, and teats that don’t cross. Sires being used right now include Roble, Hotrod, Malicious, Just In Time, Primerib, and Rev Me Up. While they don’t have a clear favorite in the barn, they also have a hard time finding a cow they can’t ship soon enough. Aside from dairying, the Wohlks are involved in their church and Clayton is part of Farmers of the Barron County Watersheds, an organization that promotes environmental stewardship and conservation agriculture. In addition to the Wohlks’ commitments to community involvement and conservation, they put a lot of time and effort into maintaining a well-kept farmstead. “We enjoy hearing people say that we have a nicelooking farm, and we are proud that we can pretty easily score 100 or very close to it on our state and federal milk inspections,” Clayton said. In addition, the Wohlks also have a growing side business selling pumpkins and sunflowers that has helped to keep the farm afloat. What began in a corner of a field in 2014 has now grown to over five acres dedicated to pumpkin, gourd, squash, and ornamental corn production for fall décor. “The first few years, we picked them with just the family, but now it involves about 30 people to get them all picked and ready for sale. We were definitely able to capture a corner of a market and have many return customers that love coming to the farm to get fresh products. That led us to start playing with a few sunflowers in 2017, just for something to look at as people drive by and we offered them for pick-your-own,” Clayton said. “We have made a much bigger field now and have a maze and a viewing platform. It’s definitely a hit for families looking for something different, simple, and low-cost Copyright © Free Vector Maps.com

At the end of the day, family is everything for the Wohlks and it permeates into their vision for the future of the farm. “We are working on determining what [future plans] are right now. We will be going through a farm succession here soon and we also need to be looking at building a new barn that makes dairy farming more family friendly. That will most likely include some sort of robotic milking,” Clayton said. “We don’t really have written out goals that we work towards every day or every year. We are happy when we can make quality feed to make quality milk and get it all done on time so we can try and get family time.”

Breeder Profile

District 2: Lirr Farm by Mara Budde When Ryan Nigh of Viroqua turned 16, he didn’t ask for a car like most kids his age. Instead, he asked for a cow. And while this isn’t surprising for a farm kid, this gift would turn out to be a driving force in Registered Holstein genetics and do so much not just for Ryan, but for the entire Nigh family. So, in efforts to get Ryan an animal, the Nigh family went to the Minnesota Spring Sale and when the gavel dropped, Ryan became the owner of Kerndt Sneezy Derry Drew, a Derry daughter from an Excellent Mtoto. This heifer would make a lasting impact on Ryan, his father Robert, uncle Randy, as well as the rest of his family when she calved in as a three-year-old with a Goldwyn bull calf, Lirr Drew Dempsey EX-93. Over time, Dempsey would become a household name in the Registered Holstein business and a sire of champions. Lirr Farm is owned and operated by brothers, Robert and Randy Nigh. The farm was started by Robert and Randy’s parents, Lewis and Irene. Lirr is combination of their names: is L for Lewis, I for Irene and RR for Randy and Robert. Lewis started the farm with four heifers from the Monroe area. Their first barn had just 14 stalls and had been purchased from Irene’s father. In the late 1950s the neighboring 200-acre farm was purchased and lumber was sawed for a new 38-stall barn built in 1957. Lewis passed away in 1966 and that same year Randy suffered a serious tractor accident landing him in the hospital. With the help of his ag teacher and others, they convinced his mother to keep the cows and the farm. The dairy is a true family affair with Robert and Betty’s children, the third generation on the farm, Ryan, Brady, Brandon and Rachel finding ways to help out their father and uncle. Ryan and his Viroqua wife Kelsey are involved in the farm as herdspeople while maintaining a beef herd. Brady helps with youngstock and other farm chores and has a farm of his own consisting of beef, sheep and meat goats. Rachel works with registrations and is finishing her senior year at UW-River Falls. Brandon works for Milwaukee Tool as an engineer and is the farm’s on-call engineer. He and his wife, Megan, enjoy farming on some weekends. Betty runs numerous errands for parts and provides meals on wheels. Small updates and expansions took place during the 1970s and 1980s to accommodate more cows as well as improving cow comfort through mattresses and four large pens. 1999 brought the stall total in the barn to 90 and cows were milked in a double-eight parlor. Unfortunately, in June 2016 a barn fire claimed the cow facility and parlor. With an opportunity to start fresh, the Nighs built a robot barn as well as dry cow and heifer housing on a different location. The Nighs chose two Lely A4 robots for their barn and to implement alley scrapers and a Lely automatic feed pusher. Since that time, manure storage, a feed pad and breeding age heifer barn were added. 10 – Wisconsin Holstein News – January/February 2021

Robotic dairying, while adding some challenges at first for the family, has offered them a variety of new data that can be used to improve the herd. The robotic system allows the Nighs to track activity, rumination, conductivity, temperature and daily milk weights, to name a few. Overall, the goal is to continuously work toward production and type improvement. Increasing pounds of solids per cow is something the family is always working to improve in their herd by providing high-quality, homegrown forages from their 1100 acres. “The ability to milk high producing cows three to four times a day and top dress energy pellets to individual cows was very appealing. We liked that Lely had been into robotic milking for many years,” Randy says. “We haven’t fully mastered the various small operational and management challenges that exist with robotic milking system. The cows seem to have adapted better than we have.” Cows like Dempsey’s dam, Kerndt Sneezy Derry Drew VG-88, are the kind of cows the Nigh family enjoys working with. “This family gets better each generation and are trouble-free, long-lived cows with great udders, feet and legs and are fun to work with,” Robert says. Another cow that exemplifies their breeding goals is LirrCrest-View Jenifer-ET VG-88 DOM GMD, who was a WHA Top Performer and their first 50,000-pound milk cow. “She had a beautiful high and wide udder with the perfect balance of strength and dairyness. She was robot ready in the 1980s,” Robert says. The “O” family has produced a lot of excitement for the Nighs, too. Very Good two-year-olds producing 100 to 150 pounds per day in their first lactation are common in this family. Hickorymea Man Outfit-P EX-91 who has a record of 5-01 365 38,490 4.9 1893 3.2 1217, has sons Lirr Outfit-PP and Lirr Option-PP who are homozygous polled bulls placed in AI. Randy; Robert and Betty; Ryan and Kelsey; Brady; Brandon and Megan; and Rachel Nigh Number of cows: 141 Registered Cows Number of acres: 1100 acres of crops and pasture Primary Crops grown: Corn, Alfalfa and Soybeans Average production: 28,508 3.9% 1102 3.2 % p 901 p Ration: Alfalfa Haylage, corn silage, high moisture shelled corn with protein, mineral and vitamin supplements in a partial TMR plus high energy protein pellets for feeding in the robot Type of housing: Freestall with sand bedding and alley scrapers, robotic milking and automatic feed pusher Prefix: Lirr Outcast PP is a son at Select. Outcast has 12 daughters in the herd. Robotic milking has required the Nigh family to look at teat placement and length more closely while making mating decisions. This has eliminated the use of some genomic sires. Sires that they are using to achieve their type and production goals while keeping animals robot-ready are Cobra-P, Coffee, Doc, Delta Lambda, Ronald, Renegade, Rashan and Dempsey. Dempsey daughters in the herd continue to be favorites of the family. The Windbrook daughters from Dempsey’s Shottle sister are impressing the Nighs: Lirr Windahchou Dayquil-ET 94-2E, who has a record of 5-10 365 44,584 1369F 1335P; and Lirr Wind Ahchou Abigal-ET EX-91, with 7-00 365 36,220 1403F 1193P. “The Dempsey family has been one of our top producing cow families as have the Dempsey daughters,” Robert says. The Nighs were no strangers to putting sons into AI, but Dempsey was something special for the family. He is a sire that has produced champions and class winners around the world and topped the Canadian LPI list five times in his career. At Select Sires he proved to be a strong asset to their Showcase Selections lineup with more than 38,700 daughters, of which 27,000 are classified. Over his lifetime he produced sales of more than 570,000 units. “Dempsey was a dream come true. After we placed Lirr-CrestView Jess into AI, we never thought we would have another bull close to him,” Robert says. “I showed many Hagemans Tempo daughters and to see that excitement in others when they showed their Dempsey daughters was humbling.” Showing hasn’t been a main priority over the years, but Randy enjoys going to shows to watch, especially when there are Dempseysired daughters in the ring. Dempsey recently passed away at the age of 13, but the Nigh family will never forget the many positive comments about Dempsey daughters from their fellow breeders. He is a testament of the breeding Robert and Randy, as well as their parents, have worked toward

over so many years. Through a few hardships, the family has overcame and continues to excel in their dairy business and in breeding cows that fit their goals as well as the goals of their fellow breeders. Both bulls and cows with the Lirr prefix still provide a great marketing avenue. Robert notes that each year they sell some cows privately and have sold embryos and bulls to several countries over the years. Lirr Farm is one of only 16 herds to have received the Progressive Genetics Award for 30 years, every year since its inception from Holstein Association USA. Off the farm, the family is involved in their community and dairy industry. Randy served for many years on the East Central/Select Sires Board and Sire Committee for Select Sires. Robert has been on the Viroqua School Board for 24 years, served on the Wisconsin Holstein Board of Directors, as well as on the Holstein USA Board. Currently, he serves on the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Board. Both Randy and Robert have served on the Vernon County Holstein Board and the Sterling Township Board. Kelsey and Brady work at Organic Valley. Robert’s wife Betty is a public health nurse and the county coroner. Robert and Randy are working on transitioning the dairy to the next generation but will be forever grateful to their parents and those in the Registered Holstein business for bringing them so much joy in their chosen career. “People in the Holstein community have offered us the motivation to continue on and move forward,” Randy says. “That means a lot.”

Polk County wins inaugural North American Dairy Educational Experience contest It was another national team victory for five young ladies from Polk County 4-H. They topped the first North American Dairy Educational Experience (NADEE) last month. The contest was developed to provide a dairy learning experience in the advent of the in-person National 4-H Dairy Bowl Contest being canceled. The first-place team hails from Polk County in Northwest Wisconsin. Team members were Courtney Glenna, Katherine Elwood, Ella Williamson, Grace Haase and Hailey Clausen. Glenna, Elwood, and Williamson are students at Amery High School. Haase is a freshman at UW-River Falls and Clausen is a freshman at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Instead of asking specific questions about the dairy industry and the science behind concepts, NADEE had the participants evaluate a set of written, farm-based mini-scenarios. The youth worked in small teams of three to five, to evaluate the strengths and opportunities for improving management practices discussed in the scenario. The subject areas covered housing, calves, nutrition, reproduction, and animal care. The 4-H members on the team could communicate with each other in person, on the phone, or electronically. They could use written sources such as books and magazines to support their suggested improvements to the farm scenarios. However, they were not allowed to consult advisers, other 4-Hers, or industry professionals, when evaluating the farm scenarios or when providing feedback. They had one week to review the scenario and prepare their feedback. A two-page letter was written to the hypothetical farm owner detailing their evaluation of the farm, including management steps that could be taken to improve the operation. They received a new scenario every two weeks, so the contest was spread over a three-month window. States could enter more than one team – but only one team could submit their letters for review by the judges. 4-H youth that participate in this year’s dairy educational experience did not use their eligibility to compete at future North American 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl contests and previous participants could also participate as long as they meet the eligibility rules of age and completion of college courses. Glenna, Elwood, and Haase were on last year’s National winning 4-H Dairy Bowl team.

Grace Haase, Ella Williamson, Courtney Glenna, Katherine Elwood, Hailey Clausen

Fifteen states participated including: Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Four other teams from Georgia, Maine, New York, and Pennsylvania also had a second team of youth indicate they participated at As the winners, each member of the winning team their local level. The second-place team received a plaque, medallion, and a cash award. was from New York. The two Honorable Mention Teams were from Massachusetts and Michigan. The North American Dairy Educational Experience was sponsored by National Dairy Shrine, American Dairy Science Association, Hoard’s Dairyman and Select Sires.

VOLUME. 1

“Wimpy” – the First Cow of the Breed to go EX-97

Linden Dictator Wimble Wimpy, bred by Charles F Hasnerl of Knox, Indiana, was born on October 9, 1950. Her sire was Maytag Ormsby Fobes Dictator EX-GM, and her dam with two DHIA records above 600 fat was Dougvic Pathfinder John, VG, 1a son of Montvic UWby student profile_2020.qxp_Layout 1/7/21 12:24 PM Pathfinder Chieftain, VG-GM, and Montvic Chieftain Belle, GP. Her second dam was by a son of Pabst Cascader Pride. As a four-year-old, Wimpy was sold in the Hasnerl dispersal to John A. Newman and Sons of Culver, Indiana, for $1350 - the second highest price of the sale. At the time, she was working on a good three-year-old record in DHIA. Freshening for the Newmans as a fouryear-old, she went on official test for the first time. If, as had been reported, she experienced trouble with that calving, it may account for the modest size of her first official record. The University of Wimpy also received her first classification at the Newmans’ farm, going GP-84 with a ISCONSIN breakdown of E-+E-G-G-+-+-E at 5 years, O months. After completing that first record, she MADISON was sold privately to Braun’s Sunny Lea Farm for $4,000. At Sunny Lea, she was put on 3x Animal & Dairy Sciences milking and made her subsequent records. Also at Sunny Lea, she was classified at 6-05 as ENIOR POTLIGHT 90 points with the breakdown showing every category as either EX or VG. At 7-04 she was classified 93 points and Excellent across the board and at 8-06 she was raised to 96 points. Name: Dawson Nickels In March of 1963 she picked up her final point to make a total of 97 points at 12 years, 5 Hometown: Watertown, WI months of age. School: Watertown High School Although Wimpy remained at Brauns Sunny Lea Farm, she changed ownership in their Class Size: 270 1960 dispersal when Nelson Rehder, Sunny Lea’s manager, purchased her for $7,000. She had Farm: Dream Fix Holsteins Major: Dairy Science & two calves for Rehder, both heifers. The older was Wimpys Champion by Wis Champion Business Management and the younger was Wimpys Senorita by Thonyma Ormsby Senator. Wimpy was well over 100,000M on official test with the following records all either HIR Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? UW-Madison has great prestige within the acaor AR: demic field. CALS specifically has a reputation and 4-7 309 2X 8,085 4.0 327 influence arising from the success, achievement, 5-10 365 3X 21,953 3.6 801 and rank of its alumni within the dairy industry. favorite course has been dairy science 205. What are your future career goals? I am evaluating different options within the ConsumerPackaged-Goods Industry. College allows for career exploration. It took me nearly my entire collegiate tenure before I found the many opportunities within the CPG Industry. Many CPG companies rely on agriculture, so working within a CPG company will directly impact the dairy industry.

You’d think we’d be used to adjusting plans for WHA events by now, but it’s still disappointing when the one you’ve been looking forward to for months just can’t happen. Despite hoping to make the Junior Convention work in March for all of our enthusiastic junior members, the Junior Activities Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the statewide event for everyone’s safety and health. While we won’t be able to gather the large group together, we are now working on planning four regional events in each of the four JAC Districts. As of the print deadline for this issue, we are just starting to look for dates and locations that will work for each District with the goal of getting area youth together to celebrate award winners, have dairy bowl competitions and vote for JAC candidates. If you have a suggestion for a location with a large holding room and at least one smaller competition room, please give me a call at the WHA office. We will publish info on the WHA Facebook page and website as they become available and will email junior advisors with details as we get them nailed down. Another change for 2021 was the cancellation of the Adult Convention and postponement of the annual meeting until 2022. This was also not an easy decision, but the WHA board felt it was the best one to make at their meeting in December for the health and safety of all our members. We have plans to recognize our Distinguished Breeder award winners, Wall of Fame inductees and others usually recognized at the convention at future WHA events including Spring Show and the state picnic. Watch for stories and celebrations of these award winners in the coming months. In other news, if you have not renewed your 2021 membership yet, you will be receiving a reminder postcard shortly. In order to continue to receive the Wisconsin Holstein News, we ask that you renew your membership by March 15. Renewals be made by mailing a check to our office, through our online system with a credit card, or by calling the WHA office with a credit card for payment. The March issue of the Wisconsin Holstein News will be the next installment of Midwest Holsteins. This is always a great opportunity to advertise your spring sale consignments as ads will be shared with Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan Holstein breeders. Give us a call at the office or drop Mara an email if you’d like to reserve an ad space in the March issue. Wishing you all the best in the coming months and hope to see you at a WHA event in 2021! Laura January/February 2021 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 27

Wisconsin Holstein Youth **Junior Convention Update ** We had hoped to be able to gather everyone in March for the postponed Junior Convention, however due to the continuing high numbers of COVID cases throughout Wisconsin, the Junior Activities Committee has made the decision to cancel the 2021 Junior Holstein Convention. The JAC is strategizing ways to host four safe District Events in order to hold Dairy Bowl competitions, recognize award winners, and hold District Caucuses. The committee feels strongly that one of our goals is to keep junior members engaged and involved and this is the best option to do so while keeping our gatherings smaller and easier to social distance. While Dairy Bowl may not be a priority to all, it is one of the most well-attended activities we have and should be a way to engage a large number of our members. We are currently looking for dates and locations to hold these events and will share information as it becomes available. Below is a summary of our plans for the spring and how junior members can participate in activities normally held at the Junior Convention. District Events (1 for each District, dates & locations TBD) - Dairy Bowl competitions for junior and senior teams - Recognize award recipients from that district - Open forum and JAC voting - Raffle ticket sales (drawing will be held at State Finals day) - Lunch JAC Elections - Will schedule a Zoom call with anyone interested in running where candidates will introduce themselves and answer impromptu questions. Interested candidates should contact Laura at WHA. - Videos will be posted on FB and/or website for membership to view before their District Event - Counties will vote at their District Event for all 4 JAC positions; if not participating in dairy bowl, a representative can attend to fill out a ballot - JAC candidates will be encouraged to attend any of the District Events, but are required to attend their home District - Will need to attend State Finals day to assist with Dairy Bowl & Dairy Jeopardy; election results announced that day Virtual Contests - watch Facebook and the WHA website for more details to come - Speaking Contest - Bell-R-Ring - Activity Room contests Award Recognitions - Videos will be made for DJM, YDJM and 12 & Under award winners to play on social media - Recognitions at District Events for all other award - Outstanding Boy & Girl and Royalty announcements to be made on March 27 28 – Wisconsin Holstein News – January/February 2021

Dairy Bowl & Dairy Jeopardy - Junior and Senior team competitions at District Events (due to space and time limitations, there will be no Rookie competition this year) - Top teams from each District will move on to State Finals - JAC will keep track of points earned by dairy bowl team members; top 2 individuals earning the most points in each age division will qualify for the State Finals for Dairy Jeopardy State Finals - Dairy Bowl finals held to designate 1st-4th place teams for Juniors and Seniors - Dairy Jeopardy finals for each age division - JAC Election results announced - Raffle Drawing

2021 Junior Membership Renewals

All membership renewal notices for 2021 were sent from the office in October 2020. All members received green renewal cards this year with notification of 2021 membership amounts. Please submit the card with payment to the office or call to pay by credit card. In order to exhibit at WHA shows and attend junior events, you must be a paid member. If members have not seen a notice, they should contact Charitee at the office. Please help your staff keep an updated database and let us know if you have not received your renewal postcard.
