In June 2019, the Wisconsin Holstein Association will once again host the National Holstein Convention. The wheels for this journey were set in motion back in 2008 after Wisconsin hosted a very successful National Convention in the Wisconsin Dells. This time around, Appleton, Wis., and the Red Lion-Paper Valley Hotel and the newly constructed Fox Cities Exhibition Center will serve as our convention headquarters. The Red Lion happens to be the same hotel that hosts all the opponents for the Green Bay Packers. That being the case, the convention site gives us incredible proximity to the entire Fox River Valley and Green Bay. More importantly, there are over one-half million dairy cows within a 60-mile radius of our convention headquarters... making this area one of the world’s most densely populated areas of Registered Holsteins. With these natural attributes, the logical convention theme became — Making Legendairy Leaps. With this foundation, the 2019 National Holstein Convention will be a cow convention and a family convention. Room rates at the Red LionPaper Valley Hotel will be $114, plus tax, making this the most economical convention in well over a decade. Pre-Convention Farm Tours and Host Day Farm Tours will feature some of our state’s most preeminent Registered Holsteins housed in the widest array of facilities found anywhere in the world. Our Family Night will be in the Green Bay area with a footballstyle tailgate adjacent to Lambeau Field. That evening will also include Lambeau Field Tours for those who sign up.

Wednesday and Thursday will feature activities not seen before at an annual meeting. For adults, the annual meeting will take place Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon. Nestled in between the annual meeting will be the National Genetics Conference featuring some of the best genetic speakers from throughout the U.S. and around the world. The Wednesday night National Sale will follow the cow and football theme with a presale tailgate and cheese extravaganza, a first-half genomic sale, halftime meal, and second half live cattle sale. A Thursday lunch in between the genetics conference and annual meeting will feature a Dairy Girl event that will not only cater to women, but men as well. Wednesday and Thursday will be woven together with a top-notch Dairy Bar and Trade Show held at the Fox Cities Convention Center. The dynamic junior convention will showcase all the traditional events that bring energy to the national gathering. Plus, we will build on Michigan’s inaugural Cows 2 Careers event and there will be an inaugural National Junior Genetics Conference. The convention will conclude with an evening Gala Banquet... and then Friday will have the 25th Anniversary Young Dairy Leaders Institute’s (YDLI) leadership conference open to both alumni and those who want to pursue leadership development. We have a dynamic team of volunteers who are bringing this convention to life - over 100 at the moment. On behalf of my co-chair and wife, Krista Knigge, I thank each of them for their servant leadership and we look forward to sharing more highlights about this upcoming convention in future columns. Sincerely, Corey Geiger 2019 National Convention co-chair

Breunig’s Bovine

BUZZ Holstein friends, It is so hard to believe that Brooke and I’s year of representing the Wisconsin Holstein Association is flying by so fast! This summer was truly one for the books, and getting to attend so many shows, most for the first time, was such a great way to realize how many fantastic Holstein breeders there are throughout our state. Some of my favorite shows to be a part of were futurities. I love to watch the excitement of the showmen when their cow takes first, and they get the affirmation that the heifer they had believed in truly made a great cow. It seems as though just yesterday we were crowned at the Junior Holstein Convention, and in the blink of an eye we are already into Fall, or as we like to call it: World Dairy Expo season! Expo has always been one of my favorite events each year, from meeting new friends, catching up with old ones, seeing the best cattle in the world and, of course, eating grilled cheese and chocolate milkshakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! This year is sure to be one I remember for the rest of my life, as we get the honor of handing out awards during the Holstein shows all week. Getting the chance to award the Grand Champion of the best show in the world, with the best seats in the house? Count me in! After the show ends, the cows go home, and the colored shavings have left the Coliseum, it means it’s almost convention time for our junior members. I encourage each and every member to participate in at least one new event this year, whether it may be bringing an art project for the contest room or testing their knowledge in Dairy Jeopardy, there’s obviously something for everyone! I feel so lucky to have made so many new connections within our industry this year, and hope to make even more before my time as the WHA Princess comes to a close. Please feel free to introduce yourself, or even invite Brooke and I to you or your child’s classroom to talk about milk’s essential nutrients and the Wisconsin dairy industry. We would love to visit you! See you on the shavings! Allie Breunig, 2018 Wisconsin Holstein Princess

2018 Wisconsin Championship Show

The 59th annual Wisconsin Championship Show was held at the New Holland Pavilion on the Alliant Energy Center grounds in Madison, Wis., on August 21. Judge Joel Lepage of Amqui, Quebec, placed 141 head during the open Holstein show, including 99 heifers and 42 cows. MilkSource Genetics took home Senior and Grand Champion honors with their winning 6-year-old and older, TK-Plain-View Ripley. Reserve Champion was the winning 4-year-old, Gamblin Armani Glade owned by Rosedale Genetics, Dan Hovden and MB Luckylady Farm, Oxford. Judge Lepage commented that his champion cow “looks better and better. She’s the most functional cow with a really good udder. She has lots of width and height in the rear udder.” He commented during Senior Champion selection that it was a close pair, but that the difference was the top of the rear udder on the aged cow. He preferred the way she was fuller at the top of the rear udder and higher in the rear udder attachment. Judge Lepage admired his Reserve Champion for the way she moved on her rear feet and legs and her deeper crease in the rear udder. Intermediate Champion honors went to Unique Dempsey Cheers exhibited by Budjon Farms, Abbott, Woodmansee and Blondin, Lomira. Reserve Champion was Sco-Lo-Af Sid Sangria-ET, exhibited by Jim Ostrom and John Vosters, Kaukauna. Judge Lepage admired the mammary system on his Intermediate Champion, “especially her fore udder attachment, being stronger and longer in the fore udder, and being deeper in the fore rib and having more openness of rib than the nice dairy cow for reserve. I prefer her strength of loin and slope of rump (over honorable mention).” Judge Lepage was impressed with the quality of the heifer show. He selected the winning Winter Yearling as Junior Champion, Budjon-Abbott Alexandra-ET owned by Kaelyn, Kenadee and Keegan Weigel, Platteville. Reserve Champion was Bella-Ridge Beauty Queen, exhibited by Jacob, Logan and Madison Harbaugh and Ainsley and Adella Loehr, Marion. Judge Lepage commented “This is an easy winner today. She uses her dairy strength and is wider in the chest floor, wider in the front end and has more rib.” He said the reserve champion “moves extremely well and has more openness of rib than the honorable mention. I prefer the way she flexes that rear leg and her width through the rump.” The Premier Exhibitor banner went to Milksource Genetics and Duckett Holsteins was named Premier Breeder. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors and thank you to all of the show sponsors that helped make the show a success. Following are the top 5 placings in each class, along with other award winners. Junior Championship Show

Grand Champion line-up for the Junior Championship Show The third annual Junior Championship Show was held on August 20 in Madison, Wis. Judge John Erbsen of Lanark, Ill., placed 95 head, including 71 heifers and 24 cows. Noah Bilz of Dorchester took home Grand Champion honors with OCD Braxton Charlee-ET. Reserve Champion honors went to Ms Hodglynn Brkw Bonus, the Intermediate Champion, owned by Eva Doornink, Baldwin. Judge Erbsen commented on his Grand Champion, “I love the straightness of lines (on the senior champion), the quality of udder and she has the best udder of the show.” He went on to say the Reserve Champion had a bit more style than the Reserve Senior Champion and that she has a bright future. Reserve Intermediate Champion was Synergy Anaheim MagnoliaET owned by Mason, Carter, & Evan Jauquet and Mikayla, Carmen & Spencer Haack of Pulaski. Reserve Senior Champion was Mission-Bell Pitbull Oneida owned by Shaun Jens & Savanah Barts, Sheboygan Falls. Sweeping Junior Champion honors of the Junior and Open Shows was Budjon-Abbott Alexandra-ET owned by Kaelyn, Kenadee and Keegan Weigel of Platteville. Reserve Junior Champion was Dylan and Cameron Ryan’s winning fall calf, Ryan-Vu Doorman Risin Shine. Judge Erbsen commented that the winter yearling “is a tremendous heifer with great breed character about her head and neck. You have to love her length, she’s feminine in the front end but still has power.” He also said he loved the extremely stylish fall calf but the champion has more width through the chest and he liked how her neck comes out of shoulder just a bit nicer. The state showmanship contest was held on Tuesday with Nick Uglow serving as official judge. Logan Harbaugh, Jacob Harbaugh and Noah Bilz placed first in their respective age division. Andis clippers donated clippers for first place in each division and Nasco generously donated show supplies for the top three placings in each of the age divisions. DISTRICT 7 BREEDER PROFILE by Emma Olstad, WHA Summer Intern

Jauquet Holsteins LLC Jeff Jauquet Family, Luxemburg he northeastern part of Wisconsin in District 7 is the home of the Green Bay Packers, Door County, and Lake Michigan. But more importantly, it is where many of Wisconsin’s cows call home. Located outside of Green Bay in Luxemburg, Jeff Jauquet owns and operates Jauquet Holsteins, LLC. In 1966, the original farm was purchased by Jeff ’s parents, Hub and JoAnne and began with 50 cows. Jauquet Holsteins, LLC is now home to 80 cows, the majority of which are Registered Holsteins with some Brown Swiss, Jerseys and Red and Whites. Jeff went into a partnership with his parents in 1986, a year after attending Farm and Industry Short Course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Seven years later, Jeff bought the farm from his parents and has been the sole owner since. Though Jeff oversees the main day to-day operations, he employs two people, Linda and Jose, to ensure farm tasks fun smoothly and cows are well cared for. Cows are fed a TMR ration with corn silage and balege from crops grown on their 296 acres. Of the 80 cows on the dairy, 30 of the animals are boarded. These animals are elite show cows who have competed at every level and high genomic females that have been successful for their owners. One of the most notable cows living at Jauquet Holsteins, LLC, is Kingsmill Atwood Allison-ET who is owned by the Ebert family of Algoma. Allison has had a tremendous show career for the Eberts, placing first in the Six-Year-Old and Older Class in the International Junior Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo in 2017 as well as the Five-Year-Old Class at the 2016. Allison most recently was named the All-Wisconsin 150,000 lb. Cow at the Wisconsin Championship Show. Jeff has also had the opportunity to house the winning Junior TwoYear-Old Brown Swiss from the 2017 World Dairy Expo, IE Twinkle-Hill Bush Jengas. She is owned by John and Dee Winkelman of Watertown. Jeff says that he enjoys the challenge that caring for show cows presents and seeing them develop during each lactation. Jauquet Holsteins, LLC raises their young stock on the farm. At birth, the calves are fed one gallon of pasteurized colostrum within the first hour of birth. Calves are housed in individual hutches and are fed pasteurized milk three times a day for 60 days. Once they are weaned, they are grouped in super hutches and fed a grass alfalfa mix. When making breeding decisions, Jeff focuses on the specific cow

T

BKB Amanda-ET EX-92 family and breeds for elite genetics or high milk production, components and merchandizing potential. To obtain the high type genetics that he has worked so hard to achieve, Jeff currently uses sires such as Doorman and Unix. When breeding for genomics, Jeff ’s process changes weekly given the constant change of service sires due to the fast-paced process. The cows are milked three times a day in a tie-stall barn and are let outside to graze at night during the grazing season. The dairy’s rolling herd average is 32,781 3.91% 1293 3.21% 1053 with a bulk tank average of 110 pounds. The most influential cow to call Jauquet Holsteins home through the years was BKB Amanda-ET, EX-92, because of her high-quality genetics. Amanda was a Durham out of Shoremar S Alicia EX-97. Thanks to Amanda, the farm was able to sell many offspring and embryos to Holstein enthusiasts across Wisconsin and the United States. Outside of farming responsibilities, Jeff enjoys spending time with his three kids - Tyler, Nate and Hailey. Tyler, 29, lives in Slinger with his wife Emilie. They own UniFURsity Club, a doggie daycare in Milwaukee. Emilie works for Harley Davidson Corporate in their accounting department. Nate, 27, lives in Duvall with his wife, Kailyn and their 3-year-old son, Jamison. Nate works for Schreiber Foods in Green Bay in their finance department. Hailey, 20, just started her junior year at the University of WisconsinMadison and is studying Psychology and Life Sciences Communications. She is actively involved in the Badger Dairy Club and is looking forward to working at World Dairy Expo.

Kingsmill Atwood Allison-ET EX-95, owned by Jordan & Whitney Ebert and housed at Jauquet Holsteins All of the kids helped Jeff on the farm growing up and enjoyed spending their summers showing Holsteins at the District 7 Holstein Show, Kewaunee County Fair and Futurity and the Wisconsin Junior State Fair. Attending the Kewaunee County Junior Fair was always a tradition for the Jauquet family and this year was the first time in nearly 25 years that there were no animals exhibited from Jauquet Holsteins, LLC. The kids may not exhibit in the junior show anymore, but the farm has continued to exhibit in the county Futurity since it started 13 years ago. This year, there were four cows from Jauquet Holsteins and an additional six cows that Jeff boards that were exhibited in the 3-year-old and 5-year-old and over Futurity classes. The main goal of most farmers, including Jeff, is to develop admirable cows and establish genetics to last generations. It’s the passion for farming and his cows that motivates Jeff to continue doing what he loves. He’s proud that the dairy was able to provide for his parents and now for his family. The farm is an excellent place to raise a family and having his 3-year-old grandson run around and help on the farm makes farming a continued family tradition.

In May, members attended Cow Camp and later Badger Dairy Camp, and several exhibited at the district show and state fair. The group completed successful fundraisers by holding lunch stands during the Milk Source Genetics Sale and the 4-H state shooting sports competition. The Brown County group looks forward to continued growth and participation at the county, district and state levels and beyond.

We will end our 2018 with our annual association meeting on December 11 (location to be determined.) The Outagamie County Junior Holstein Association had a successful food stand at our Holstein Breeders’ county sale this past April. We also would like to thank Bull Shipper Semen Sales, NorthStar Co-op, David Gitter’s AI, and IPS for donating semen to the sale and donating it to our association. Cordes; Secretary: Terri Hamm; Treasurer: Justin Hintz; Board members: Corey Biely, Jim Sattler, Matt Ewald, Blair Sawall, Grady Auer & Bret Long. It has been an amazing year for the Waupaca-Waushara Holstein Association! Our year began as 14 of our talented juniors attended the Junior Holstein convention in Stevens Point in January. Caleb Hamm and Katie Bauer both served as JACs for this region and our kids were able to volunteer at convention and help out the JACs with contest duties. We had two junior dairy bowl teams competing as well as two senior teams. One of those junior teams made it to the final round of the dairy bowl contest. Also there were six juniors who participated in the dairy jeopardy contest, three individuals in the prepared speaking contest, three juniors entered in the folding display, craft and photography contests as well. Convention was tons of fun for the kids and chaperones! The 32nd Annual Waupaca-Waushara Show Opportunity Sale was held March 17, 2018. You didn’t need the luck of the Irish to bring home home any of the 35 lots auctioned off that day. So many beautiful Holstein show prospects sold. Our sale average was $1,630 and our highest selling heifer was a gorgeous red winter calf consigned by Milksource and she fetched an impressive $4000. New this year, our juniors sought donations of items and baskets of items to be auctioned off prior to the sale with all proceeds going toward our junior fund. They raised over $4,000! We were humbled by the support and generosity of the businesses and individuals who donated. For the third year our association has partnered with the Waushara County Dairy Promotion to sponsor a showmanship clinic. This year’s clinic was held at Wilstar, Willis and Carla Gunst’s farm in Poy Sippi. We were honored to have Mandi Bue as our presenter this year. There were 40 kids in attendance and this educational day included hands on learning and loads of fun. The Waupaca-Waushara Holstein Association was honored to sponsor the District 7 Show on June 21 at the Waupaca County Fairgrounds. There were an amazing 165 entries! It was lots of work to plan and prepare but also so much fun. Our big summer activity is co-hosting the fitting and showing clinic with the Waupaca County Dairy Fair Youth Committee. This clinic is always a fantastic event that allows kids hands-on clipping, fitting and showing experience under the guidance of dairy leaders and our fitter demonstrator. This year there were 23 kids in attendance from both Waupaca and Waushara Counties. Our counties had wonderful representation at the district show, Wisconsin State Fair, Holstein Futurity, Waushara County and Waupaca County Fairs. We are proud to sponsor awards and prizes for our Holstein showmen. Our association is a tight knit group of Holstein breeders, farmers and enthusiasts. We are 68 members strong. Our main objective is supporting our dairy youth and helping to sponsor educational activities to keep our Holstein juniors passionate about this magnificent breed.

2018 Illinois Holstein Championship Show Dedication L-R: Illinois Holstein President Ed Smith, Kathy Miller, Madeline Schultz, Kaye Miller, Bob Miller, Emily Sheehan and Kaylen Miller

The 2018 Illinois Holstein Championship Show was dedicated to Bob and Kaye Miller. As young entrepreneurs, the couple began Mil-R-Mor Farm in northern Illinois more than six decades ago. Valuing a close-knit community, they eagerly committed themselves to supporting others in the Illinois Holstein industry and contributing to the state show. One of their favorite competitions is the bred and owned championship. Not only did Bob and Kaye win this award in 1983, 1984, and 1987, they have also donated roses for bred & owned class winners for decades. Supporting youth has always been important to them. Whether serving in the ring or sponsoring awards, Bob and Kaye have been ever present to champion the next generations of Holstein enthusiasts at the state show. Together, Bob and Kaye bred over 200 excellent cows and numerous state and national production leaders. They developed C Glenridge Citation Roxy EX-97 into one of the greatest brood cows of all time and her descendants can be found in every corner of the globe. From pioneering embryo transfer in the 1970s to judging Holsteins in Australia in the 2010s, Bob and Kaye have been world-recognized leaders. They remain humble and appreciative of all the opportunities Holsteins have given them. One of their greatest joys is being part of a wonderful family that values the farm legacy they built. We thank them for all their contributions to the dairy industry and the Holstein breed, and most of all, for enriching our lives with their friendship. Congratulations! NATIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT Dear Holstein Breeders, The old saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” sure holds true as we find ourselves heading into fall. Since the last June Midwest issue, this summer has been full of interesting activities for Holstein people. The Holstein USA Annual Meeting, hosted by the Michigan Association and held in Traverse, Mich., proved to be an enjoyable time for all attending. A full schedule of Junior contests and activities kept the younger members busy. Delegates were informed of Association updates, and everyone enjoyed the Michigan scenery and hospitality. Congratulations to all individuals and herds recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. Directors Pat Maddox from California and Paul Burh from Wisconsin were recognized for their six years of dedicated service to the Holstein industry as members of the Holstein USA board. Best Wishes go out to Paul on his recent success in the August primary election for the Wisconsin assembly. He now hopes for final victory in the November general election. Good luck! Newly elected to the board were Bill Genasci from California and Robert Webb from Wisconsin. Incumbents John Marshman of New York and John Anderson of Idaho were reelected for a second three-year term. As the depressed dairy economy continues to haunt farmers, there is still good news to be found in the midst of Junior Holstein work. Junior members continue to promote the Registered Holstein cow with pride and enthusiasm. Just watch them and their work with their cattle at the county or state, district or national shows and one can find reason to trust in the future of the dairy industry. Our Midwest dairy family is very proud of their accomplishments and grateful for their leadership! Hopefully, many of you have watched the second edition of “Holstein America” aired on RFD TV. If you missed it, you can still watch it on the Holstein USA website. On the national level, registrations, transfers, and classifications are down from last year. However, there are positives to be found! Holstein Complete continues to offer financial savings, and field staff are always available for personal assistance. Agri-Tech Dairy Records Processing revenues are very positive, and the on-going IT project is nearing completion. This has been a major undertaking and will benefit both staff and association members. A final positive development has been to see the successful efforts made in demanding the correct labeling of milk and refusing to allow milk substitutes to gain a share of the market with their false advertising. As World Dairy Expo approaches, it is time to plan ahead in order to make time for this experience of outstanding Holsteins on Parade! Here’s hoping everyone has a safe and bountiful Harvest! Your Midwest Officers and Directors, Boyd Schaufelberger, Corey Geiger, Mark Kerndt, Bob Webb & Dale Drendel

2017 Wisconsin Herds of Excellence Holstein Association USA is proud to present the 2017 Herds of Excellence award recipients. These herds have all achieved the rigorous criteria to qualify for this honor. The award is broken down into three herd size divisions. The categories are as follows: • Division 1: 500+ cows • Division 2: 100-499 cows • Division 3: 10-99 cows Herds receiving the award must: • Have classified within the last year and have an age adjusted classification score of 83 points or higher; • Have at least 70% of the herd homebred; • Be enrolled in the Association's TriStarSM program Additionally, qualifying herds must meet the following production criteria: • 10 to 99 cows – 25% above breed average Mature Equivalent for milk, fat and protein • 100 to 499 cows – 20% above breed average Mature Equivalent for milk, fat and protein • 500+ cows – 15% above breed average Mature Equivalent for milk, fat and protein

DIVISION 1 • 500+ COWS Bomaz, Inc. Zwald Family • Hammond

2-Year Honoree • 97.7% Homebred Average Classification Score: 84.6 ME Averages: 32,168M 1223F 1036P The Zwald family’s Registered Holstein operation has grown and developed high quality Holstein genetics since the farm began in 1962. Today, they milk a herd of 726 cows, three times a day, in a double10 parallel parlor. Raising healthy cows that are fed a high-quality ration allows cows to produce to their highest genetic potential, Bob explains. Animals are housed in sandbedded freestyle barns to keep them stress-free and comfortable. As the family operation has expanded, they’ve placed a larger emphasis on the herd’s genetic potential. The Zwald family stresses high production, good udders and sound feet and legs. The first cow to have a big genetic impact was Bomaz Valiant Daphne VG-88 a Gold Medal DamSM (GMD) and Dam of MeritSM (DOM). Her offspring are trouble free and produce at high levels. “We don’t have a goal to necessarily have the highest classifying cow or the best show cow,” Bob says. “We breed for the working ladies with the goal they can give 100 pounds of milk every day.” With the adoption of genomic technology, Bomaz Inc. is able to identify and implement genetic progress faster than ever before. Bob relies on Enlight®, a comprehensive tool offered by Holstein Association USA and Zoetis, to help him monitor genetic information on a daily basis. He uses Enlight for mating and culling decisions and selecting

animals for future embryo transfer work. Bomaz Inc. is operated by Bob and his wife, Kay, and their family: daughter, Annette, and son-in-law, Steve Schalla; and son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Ashley. Bob’s proudest moment is being able to work alongside his family: “I think faith and family are the biggest things, and beyond that, success will come.”

Legacy Farm LLC The Schloneger Family • Shell Lake

First-Year Honoree • 83.4% Homebred Average Classification Score: 83.7 ME Averages: 32,084M 1316F 1054P Relatively new to registering animals with the Holstein Association USA, Legacy Farm LLC is a unique story. They started registering a small percentage of calves in 2011 and in seven years have become a Herd of Excellence. Legacy Farm LLC, established in 1976, uses Registered Holsteins to pave the way to an exceptional herd. Component values are a high priority when making mating decisions for herd manager Reuben Schloneger. Reuben’s ultimate goal is to have efficient cattle that produce high fat and protein, with good udders, feet and legs and functional type. While Reuben does use some new genomic sires, he incorporates a number of proven sires in his breeding program. “I am a big fan of good functional type in cows,” Reuben says. “Cows with depth and width, and strength. That’s where we get milk production.” A prominent cow for Legacy Farm is Legacy-SCH Gerard 7501 EX-91 DOM. A cow still in the milking herd, 7501 was their first recorded Dam of Merit in August of 2015. Currently her daughter, Legacy-SCH Gillespy 8057-ET EX-91, is +2286 for milk and +2.74 in the udder. Legacy Farm has several daughters from 8057 they look forward to developing. Cows like these embody what the Schloneger family strives to achieve on the farm. What first started as a way to market his registered bulls has turned into much more. Today, they are registering 99 percent of their heifer calves—and are eager to see what progress they can make with each calf. They milk 785 Registered Holstein cows. Legacy Farm is owned by Reuben and his parents, Rodney and Brenda, and brothers, Josh, John and Noah. Reuben’s brothers oversee the crop production, feeding and manure management. The Schloneger family is truly making a legacy with Registered Holsteins.

The Koepke Family: Kim, John, Dave, and Jim

“The entire team at Siemers Holsteins is honored and humbled to be named a 2017 Herd of Excellence recipient,” Dan Siemers states. “We work hard every day to do what we can to both preserve and move forward in our genetic endeavors.” Using passion and perseverance, Siemers Holstein Farm strives for excellence in the dairy industry. Their goal is to make every generation better than the last - and over the years, they’ve bred more than 1,000 Excellent and Very Good cows. To achieve success, the Siemers focus on different avenues when making breeding decisions. They breed for a spectrum of cattle: high-index cattle, show cattle, outstanding registered commercial cows, and Red and White Holsteins. Dan says their best genetic cows are also their best production cows. They look for strength in the cow’s conformation, so their herd will give more milk for longer periods of time. On Siemers Holstein Farm, they milk 2,594 cows in a double-36 parallel parlor - three times a day. Dedicated to feeding the best, Siemers produce their own haylage, corn silage, wheat and corn on 5,000 acres. Quality nutrition, along with industry-leading genetics, has allowed Siemers Holstein Farm to grow and progress through the years. In 2017, the family received a Wisconsin Master Agriculturist award for their hard work, dedication and success in farming and exemplary leadership. The farm operates as a team, with fifth generation siblings Dan, Paul and Sherry, and their families all working together. The family looks forward to the sixth generation continuing their Herd of Excellence.

John Koepke and his wife, Kim, manage the cheese production. Today, the cheese is in 50 local and chain grocery stores in the Milwaukee and Madison areas. “We wanted to make an identity with our community that would embrace a product that was locally made, and people could identify with it,” John says. “It’s rewarding to see happy customers, and start the dialogue between how we farm and how we take care of the animals and land.” Selecting for bulls that excel in cheese-merit dollars (CM$), Dave looks for bulls 900 or higher for CM$. On the female side, they seek out average-size stature cows with somatic cell counts under 29,000. Today, Koepke Farms Inc. is a partnership between brothers Alan, Dave, James and James’ son, John.

First-Year Honoree • 100% Homebred Average Classification Score: 83.9 ME Averages: 35,448M 1476F 1062P Koepke Farms Inc.’s goal is to have long lived, healthy cows that produce large volumes of high quality milk for several generations. Founded more than 80 years ago, the family operation has stood the test of time through a dedicated focus on milk production and improving the genetics in their Registered Holstein herd. The farm has grown from an initial 40 acres to today’s 1,250 acres. The Koepke family milks their 337-cow herd three times a day in a double-10 herringbone parlor. Owner Dave Koepke says their mating decisions have always favored high milk production bulls - and it shows. Koepke Farms has five cows with more than 300,000 pounds of lifetime-milk. Koepke K0017229-1660 VG-85 DOM, known to many as “Granny,” is considered at the top of the family’s special cows. The 17-year-old cow produced 429,132 pounds of milk in her lifetime. At one time, Granny held the world record for lifetime milk production. Skirting the metropolitan Milwaukee area, Koepke Farms has found a way to add value to their milk. In 2010, they used a Wisconsin Value Added Producer Grant to establish LaBelle Cheese.

True-Blue Holsteins Gerald & Kevin Ihm • Barneveld

First-Year Honoree • 94.9% Homebred Average Classification Score: 84.2 ME Averages: 32,794M 1251F 10008P The founder of True-Blue Holsteins in southern Wisconsin, Gerald Ihm says he’s admired the Holstein cow his entire life. After spending two years in the U.S. Army, he and his wife decided to plant roots on a dairy farm of their own. Shortly after, they experienced first-hand the merchandising and progressive value that Registered Holsteins have to offer. “Dairy farms are the backbone of the country,” Gerald says. “There is a lot of people that depend on our milk for meals every day. I was glad we could do our part in providing a wholesome product for the surrounding area.” Son Kevin joined the operation in 1993, bringing with him a good eye for dairy cattle, Gerald says. From that point, the dairy's profit increased. Kevin focused on ways they could enhance the cow’s environment and identify sires to increase the offspring’s milk-production potential. A cow central to the family’s success was True-Blue Duster Ihm Jen VG-85 GMD DOM. Jen set a national record for 2-year-old cows by producing 61,030 pounds of milk, 3.9 percent fat and 3.2 percent protein. True-Blue Holsteins has been honored on the Progressive Breeders’ Registry for eight years and recognized as a Progressive Genetics Herd for 22 years. Just 30 miles from Madison, True-Blue Holsteins is settled in a prime location. Gerald mentions the rolling hills are ideal for contour farming and the rich valley makes a great pasture. Due to an unfortunate illness that struck Kevin in 2017, they made the decision to sell the cows, land and machinery. However, their Registered Holstein Herd of Excellence award is an honor that will carry on forever.

cows fed with a high-quality forage means they will produce ample amounts of milk and stay healthier.” Continuous improvement is a high priority for B-Long Holsteins, where they milk 52 cows twice a day in their tiestall barn. Bruce says he sticks with three C’s in his dairying strategy: cows, comfort and consume. When B-Long Holsteins makes changes on the farm, he says, it is almost always to improved cow comfort. That leads to greater feed consumption and overall herd health. When they started, their rolling herd average was 18,000 pounds of milk and they had a BAA of 102. They have increased their rolling herd average by 19,000 pounds of milk and their BAA to 109. Registered Holstein genetics are the secret to the family’s accomplishments. Their ultimate goal is to breed large, powerful cows with big frames, and plenty of strength and width. For the Long family, B-Long BW Grapefruit VG-86 GMD DOM was the complete package. No longer in the herd, Grapefruit had the will to milk and a perfect frame. Many of Grapefruit’s offspring were marketed internationally 15 years ago. “Grapefruit is special since she was the first homebred family that flourished,” Bruce says. “We hit the right sires at the right time. She looked good, milked well and held her own with type traits.” Not only does Bruce have a drive for owning Black and White homebred beauties, he is passionate about connecting with fellow breeders. He knows the friends he made will last a lifetime. Bruce and his wife, Brenda, operate B-Long Holsteins alongside their eldest son, Bret.

The Vandertie Family: Dan, Julie, Austin, and Bridget He exhibits the same enthusiasm today, as he uses the tool to develop mating strategies. The Red Book gives him a clearer picture of how the sires will perform, leading to greater consistency within the herd. For Dan and his wife, Julie, their Holstein story began in 1987, when they married and purchased the farm from Dan’s parents. They have three children, Karlee, Bridget and Austin. Their son will graduate from high school this summer and has plans to return to the operation.

It’s home to 33 registered cows that are milked two times a day. Walking through the tiestalls, it is easy to recognize the herd’s strength. Dan looks for long-lasting cows that have the will to milk and strong frames, including wide front ends. Doorco Duster Albany EX-90 2E GMD DOM is a cow that carries those traits. Albany had more than 147,000 pounds lifetime milk and produced three Excellent daughters that were EX-92 and multiple ‘E’. Dan estimates 90 percent of his current herd descends from the Albany family. “Our family believes that registering our Holsteins and building on the pedigrees adds value,” Dan says. “We are always trying to improve the herd, not just in milk production, but every aspect.” During their last classification, Doorco had 11 Excellent and 18 Very Good cows with a BAA of 111.2. To achieve their breeding and production goals, they rely on Holstein Association USA programs and services. As a child, Dan remembers being excited when the Holstein Association USA’s Red BookTM would arrive in the mail. 24–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/September/October 2018

Ever-Green-View Holsteins is nestled 15 miles from Lake Michigan. For 60 years, Tom Kestell has dedicated his life to the Registered Holstein cow. Genetics is their first priority, Tom says, he believes it's important to use a number of different good bulls. “You have to breed away from the weaknesses in the cow,” Tom explains. “You will be in the driver’s seat if you use a combination of good udder bulls, strong feet and leg bulls, and above all, positive milk and component bulls.” The Elsie cow family has been at the heart of the Kestell’s herd for more than 30 years. Ever-Green-View Elsie-ET EX-92 2E GMD DOM produced two cows that set the National Single-Lactation Milk Production Record: Ever-Green-View My 1326-ET EX-92 2E GMD at 72,120 pounds of milk, and Ever-Green-View My Gold-ET EX-93 with 77,480 pounds. Elsie also had an offspring named as a number one GTPI proven international sire, Flevo Genetics Snowman-ET.

Chris, Gin, Jennifer and Tom Kestell

Ever-Green-View genetics are in demand domestically and abroad. Tom and his wife, Gin, spend a large part of their time devoted to merchandising, an effort that makes up three quarters of their income. They’ve sold genetics to more than 30 countries. For Tom, the most enjoyable aspect is when he receives a call about how well his cows are performing for the buyers. The Ever-Green-View team breeds high-quality Registered Holsteins that are admired around the world. Tom and Gin are in partnership with their youngest son, Chris, and his wife, Jennifer.

First-Year Honoree • 88.5% Homebred Average Classification Score: 90.2 ME Averages: 36,969M 1400F 1062P An ocean view would be an unlikely sight in Wisconsin’s Dairyland, but for Daryl and Pam Nunes, it’s the perfect description for their Holstein herd. Daryl grew up in California on Ocean View Farms, and Pam is from Wisconsin’s Dun-Did Holstein herd. When they married, she moved West and established their own herd in California alongside Daryl’s father. In 2010, the couple made the difficult decision to move their herd from California to Wisconsin, where they now operate Ocean View Genetics. Focused on breeding the finest Registered Holstein cattle, Daryl and Pam believe that bulls come and go, but cow families live on forever. The herd has a BAA of 115.5. “At Ocean View Genetics, we believe in results, not predictions,” Pam says. “We feel the best cows get better with age and can produce, reproduce and outproduce themselves. Lifetime production is our gold standard.” Almost every animal in their herd can be traced to Ocean View’s foundation cow: Ideograph Burkgov Steps EX-90 2E GMD. Although she is no longer in the herd, Steps left her mark. Ocean-View Sexation was

Pam and Daryl Nunes stand with Ocean-View Mandel Zandra the son of Steps, and his impact is truly prolific as he produced high-type families. Many animals in the top genomic lists trace back to Sexation. Ocean-View Mandel Zandra EX-95 2E GMD DOM was one of the most impactful cows in their herd and to many others worldwide. Zandra captured a lot of attention in the showring with her style and passed that along to her 17 Excellent offspring. In October 2017, Daryl and Pam sold their herd and currently have a small group of donor cows and young calves. Their plan is to house a limited group of high-type individuals. The future of Ocean View Genetics is focused on maintaining an elite donor pool, producing embryos and top-end calves.

Triple Crown: 3 EX-97 Cows, 3 Show Breeds, 1 Home Northeast Wisconsin’s MilkSource Genetics has achieved an unprecedented Triple Crown. With the upgrading of Weeks Dundee Anika to the rare EX-97 classification, the family-owned show barn has reached the pinnacle score with cows from three major show breeds. In 2014, the farm’s Blondin Redman Seisme became the first Red & White Holstein cow to achieve the milestone rating. In February, another MilkSource Genetics cow, Musqie Iatola Martha, became the youngest Jersey in history to achieve the 97 score. Now, Holstein Association USA has bestowed the landmark classification to Weeks Dundee Anika - a black-andwhite Holstein. “When Martha reached EX-97, I described it as ‘lighting striking twice.’ It was unforgettable,” said John Vosters, MilkSource Genetics partner. “But doing it again? There simply aren’t words to describe it.” It is believed there are fewer than six cows living in North America with EX-97 scores and MilkSource Genetics is home to three of them. MilkSource Genetics Partner Jim Ostrom notes the milestone moment solidifies Anika’s global reputation. “She is an impeccably proportioned mature cow,” he said. “Anika, now MilkSource Genetics achieved a Triple Crown with Weeks Dundee Anika being raised 7-years-old, was a good cow when we bought her as a Junior to EX-97. Two 97-point cows already call MilkSource home: a Red & White, 2-year-old and, since then, she has continued developing beau- Blondin Redman Seisme, and a Jersey, Musqie Iatola Martha. Her success in great dairy genetics to future generations,” Ostrom said. In the show barn, Anika also performs with solid milk production and the ring has earned her a number of All-Canadian and All-American honors and nominations. In 2016, Anika was Reserve All-Canadian 5-Year- components. At 5-00 in 293 days, she made 26,740 pounds of milk with a Old and Reserve All-American 5-Year-Old. Anika was nominated All- 4.1%F 1086F and 3.5%P 934P. She’s projected this lactation at 32,300M American 4-Year-Old in 2015 and All-Canadian Junior 2-Year-Old in 1210F 1086P. Basking in her herdmate’s glow is another MilkSource Genetics’ cow, 2013. As a Junior 2-Year-Old, she earned Honorable Mention All-AmeriTK-Plainview-Ripley, which saw her own classification climb to EX-96 just days after being named Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Championship Show. “Whether in the show ring or in the barn, cows don’t achieve results like this without the hands-on care and dedication of a great herd team,” Ostrom said. “Our manager Eddie Bue, his wife and partner-in-cow-care, Mandi, and their entire team work hard every day to bring out the best in these amazing animals. Their love for these cows is evident every day.” Eddie noted that Anika and Martha are on a 365-day show-cow program that includes dry hay and grain, but both are cared for in the same manner as all of the other show cows at MilkSource. Seisme is now retired and spends her summers in the beautiful pastures at Jim and Annette’s home. “It has been an enormous honor to work with cows like Anika, Seisme, and Martha,” Eddie said. “Any one of these cows would be considered a once-in-a-lifetime kind of a cow to work with, and to have the opportunity to work with 3, all under one roof, is truly amazing.”

Summer seems to have gone by in a flash and the time for World Dairy Expo is upon us. If you’re a WHA member and at WDE this year, please stop by our booth on the arena level of the coliseum to say hello. If you’ve picked up this copy of the News at WDE and would like to become a regular subscriber, please visit our website or call the office at 1-800-2234269 to sign up. Our 2019 membership drive will start soon and you will be receiving a renewal postcard in the mail with your account information. As in the past, we have three ways to pay your membership - you can mail a check with the card, call the office to renew by credit card, or pay by credit card using the link to our online system on the WHA website homepage. If you have any questions, please call the office. We are taking applications for two internship positions with WHA - one for spring of 2019 and one for the summer of 2019. The spring intern will focus on helping us prepare for the 2019 National Convention and will be heavily involved in making that event a success. The summer internship will be our traditional internship that helps run the District Shows, plans the Futurity and does other PR work for WHA. This intern will also have a hand in helping with the National Convention. If you or someone you know is interested in either of these positions, please send your application information to the WHA office. A reminder that we’re looking for submissions for this year’s cover contest. If you have a scenic or eyecatching photo that you think would make a great cover photo, you can email me a 300 dpi or larger JPG file or mail a high quality print to PO Box 49, Lancaster, WI 53813. Contest entries are due November 15. Next month’s issue will include WDE results and feature District 8. If you are interested in advertising, please give me a call or email by October 12. Until next time...
