From your President Craig Carncross Hello Holstein Breeders, I am not sure the person that told me to only worry about what I can control was a dairy farmer. I am sure that if they were a farmer, the agriculture community must have been rolling along without too many bumps in the road. It is hard for me to think that leaders at most any level of government have the dairy farmer on their radar. I do not know how to change that and I have tried to brainstorm ideas during many activities which have only yielded in crooked corn rows and some TMR that might not get any awards for how accurately it was mixed. There is a lot of stress out in rural America and it seems like an extra serving has hit dairy. Growing up, my sister Caroline and I really enjoyed the Lodi Fair. It was always a fun couple of days and was not far from home. Now that my kids are getting closer to showing age we are working on reconnecting with this event from an exhibitor standpoint. The fair is always right after the 4th of July on the calendar and sweetcorn is just getting ripe. The “Lodi International” as it is affectionately called, was bigger and better than ever this year. For a few days at the fair it was hard to tell rural America was hurting. Cattle numbers were up and the comradery was great. I was also amazed at how many non-farm families had animals at the fair. It was an interesting mix at the dairy show of industry people and non-farm people I went to high school with that now have their kids in 4-H. It sort of felt like my two worlds were colliding and it felt like agriculture had a fighting chance. I am proud my town puts so much effort into the fair and I am proud of how many kids and spectators had a good experience being around cattle, pigs and chickens. I wish every corner in Wisconsin could share those experiences of a Lodi Fair.

Speaking of fairs and showing cattle, I hope everyone gets a chance to check out this year’s Futurity in West Allis and then our Championship Show at the Alliant Energy Center. The Futurity is a chance for registered breeders to be involved in ag advocacy at the State Fair. It is a great chance for us to put our best foot forward in a densely urban arena. While we all know what is at stake from a competition standpoint, we can also simultaneously give a good performance for the general non-farm “what is that smell” public. If you can’t make it to Milwaukee, think about taking in the Championship Show in Madison. If the District Shows were any preview, it looks to be an amazing group of cattle that will be headed to Madison. The district shows had 1,243 cattle parade through the various rings. The district shows have the most participation of all WHA events. While the organization of Wisconsin Holstein is much more than just showing, it cannot be missed how important the District Shows are to many breeders and families. Over $18,000 went through the online entry system and has now been sent out to the respective show hosts it belongs to. Members speak to the importance of these events by their participation and their dollars. Finally, as many of you probably know by now, WHA is looking for a new Executive Director. This is an opportunity for someone to showcase their leadership and business skills. I would like to personally thank Darin Johnson for his commitment and contribution to WHA. I wish Darin the best in his new job with Holstein USA. I might have some questions about only worrying about what I can control, but I am a firm believer in “with change comes opportunity.” The opening for Wisconsin Holstein Association Executive Director is a great opportunity and we look forward to hiring a great person to help steer WHA and be a voice for the registered breeder in the state of Wisconsin. Sincerely, Craig

DISTRICT 3 BREEDER PROFILE by Mara Budde

Redrock View Farm LLC Carpenter Family, Darlington

airy farming has changed since Steve and Lisa Carpenter started farming in 1985 with 90 Holstein cows. With the strong interest from their children on continuing the family farm, the Carpenters have expanded and focused on genetics to ensure their dairy, Redrock View Farms, LLC is sustainable for future generations. Redrock View Farms in Darlington, is home to 600 cows, the majority of which are Registered Holsteins. The herd is composed of two different populations, one focused on milk production and components and the other focused on elite genetics. Each population takes on a different breeding approach. Cows are housed in sandbedded freestalls and milked three times per day in a double-12 parallel parlor. Family members involved on the dairy include: Steve, the overseer of all operations; Cody, the herd manager; and Colton, who handles the cropping side of the dairy as well as heifer management. Carson works at a machinery implement and helps part-time with cropping. Cora just finished her freshman year at Iowa State University where she is majoring in agriculture business and communications but she enjoys spending time on the farm in the summer months. Steve’s wife Lisa, besides keeping the family afloat, works at the LaFayette County UW-Extension office and lastly Cody’s wife, Carrie Jo, helps with herd duties outside her role at the local FSA office. Alongside the family members, the farm employs 10 people, six of which are full-time. Expansions took place over a number of years, starting in 2000 when the Carpenters built their first freestall barn for 200 cows and moved cows out of a 60-cow tiestall barn. Eight years later, the family expanded their herd again to 400 cows and then again in 2014 to their current size. In 2011, the Carpenters were given the opportunity to work with Ryan Weigel and Ryan Kamps doing IVF work with Kamps-Hollow Altitude. In return, the partners split the calves. To date, Redrock View has 574 offspring that can trace back to Altitude. “We are lucky to have the opportunity to work with such a good

cow family. The best genetics in our herd come from one of the most influential cows in the breed,” says Cody. He notes that the family transmits genetics with high GTPI in addition to the show winning animals. Cody works primarily with the milking herd and genetics side of the business. Today, the dairy still uses IVF but is now working with their own animals. The elite heifer population at Redrock View are flushed every other week and they still do some conventionally flushing. Redrock View Farms currently has an arrangement with ST Genetics to keep their donors at their facility for all IVF work. This work paid off in 2016 when Redrock View Klutch-ET, marketed as Redrock, made the top ten GTPI list as well as his full sister on the female side, Redrock View Jedi 498. Klutch and 498 are Jedi x Kingboy x Numero Uno x Kamps-Hollow Altitude. Their dam, Redrock-View Kingboy 367-ET is fresh in her second lactation and was just recently scored VG-86 as a three-year-old. “I’m always excited when people want to come see what we have because I have a cool cow family to work with and I’m excited to show people those kinds of cows,” Cody says of their breeding program. “Genomics can work with typical phenotype classification too.” Cody notes that is the interesting part of working with Altitude. “We didn’t start working with her until she was a 10-year-old cow. For a cow to live that long and maintain a level of genomic success is pretty amazing.” Typically, breeding goals with the genomics animals are focused

Redrock View Farm, LLC, Darlington Steve & Lisa Carpenter Family • 600 cows, 900 youngstock • TMR Ration • 1,500 acres - corn silage, hay, dry corn and corn for high moisture corn • Freestalls with a double-12 parallel parlor • RHA: 3x 30,738 3.9 1192 3.05 938 • Calves are raised off farm at a grower from birth to 6 months • Focus: Milk production, components and genomics Carpenter Family - back, left to right: Carson, Colton, Lisa, Steve and Cody; front: Cora, Alyvia (Carson’s girlfriend) and Carrie Jo around GTPI and cheese merit. Currently, there are two Modesty siblings to the top 10 bull and female Jedi animals that are high type at +2.8 PTAT and +2.78 PTAT. Cody thinks that there can be a nice balance between their traditional genomics focus and type. “We guard on phenotypic traits because I want to enjoy the cows when I come to work. I think there’s a nice balance to be struck there,” says Cody. Current sires being used on genomic females are Noble, Altamontoya and Nightcap. On the commercial focused animals Redrock breeds for cheese merit and still uses some genomic-style bulls and proven bulls are used when they are elite enough. Sires being used on commercial animals are Achiever, Medley and Jaguar. An important reason Steve and Cody note why they got into genomics is for the merchandising factor as well as another avenue to keep the farm sustainable and to support the family members involved. In addition, keeping a focus on components has helped the farm remain profitable as they ship their milk to Decatur Dairy. New technologies have also been put in place on the farm to better manage cows and create more efficiency. Recently, milk read-out meters were installed in the parlor and in the spring Redrock invested in the SCR heat detection and rumination system.

Cody says it’s changed the way the herd has handled fresh cows. “It’s a more hands-off approach and we can let cows be cows and work with the ones you need to,” he adds. While the main focus remains on production and genomics, the family does enjoy showing at local, state and regional shows as well as World Dairy Expo depending on the year. In 2016 when Redrock found success in the genomic side of dairy, they also found success in the show ring with Redrock-View Cari, a homebred Jersey. Cari, exhibited by Cora, took home Grand Champion of the Junior Jersey show at World Dairy Expo. Off the farm, the Carpenters are passionate promoters of dairy and agriculture in their region. Four area dairy farms form a group called Day at the Dairy. Participating dairies include Redrock View Farms, Cottonwood Dairy LLC, Darlington Ridge Farms LLC and Highway Dairy Farms LLC. On the second Thursday in May, 400 fourth graders from LaFayette county visit one of the four farms to experience what happens on a dairy farm. Steve is also active as a founding member of the LaFayette Ag Stewardship Alliance that just finished its first year as a group. The alliance focuses on promoting conservation of land through educating farmers and public about how farms can take care of land and water.

Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? Growing up in Wisconsin, being a Badger is the ultimate goal. The Dairy Science education offered at UW-Madison is one of the best you can receive. Attending UW-Madison has always been important to me, so I worked hard to be able to meet the qualifications and be accepted here. What has been your most memorable college experience? There have been so many, but getting involved in the clubs on campus like Saddle and Sirloin and Badger Dairy Club have been some of the most memorable. These clubs offered me the opportunity to be involved in events like World Dairy Expo and the Badger Kick-Off Classic. What has been your favorite course? My favorite course was Milo Wiltbank’s Reproductive Management course, Dairy Science 534. Dr. Wiltbank had us in the barn breeding and ultrasounding cows every day, which was an incredible experience. It’s courses like this, taught by internationally recognized professors, that make UW-Madison such a great learning environment. What are your future career goals? I will be working for Form A Feed as a nutrition and production specialist, focusing on dairy. Growing up on a dairy farm and doing two feed internships has given me a strong passion for working with farmers to help them scale goals set for their herd.

2018 National Holstein Convention Traverse City, Michigan Adult and Junior Holstein members from across the country gathered in Traverse City, Michigan on July 1-3 for the 2018 National Holstein Convention. The event offered many activities geared for both adults and youth ranging from exploring the Bear Dunes and tubing to touring area Registered Holstein herds as well as the Annual Meeting. Wisconsin was well represented by adults and juniors alike with many of our state’s very own taking home awards. Tom and Gin Kestell of Ever-Green-View Farms, Waldo, were honored during the adult banquet with the 2018 Elite Breeder Award. The Kestells own and operate one of the highest producing herds in the world as well as offer superior Registered Holstein genetics internationally through exporting. You can read more about the Kestells and their award on page 14. Also recognized during the convention was the 2017 Star of the Breed, Smith-Crest-TW Sh Virgie-ET, and nine Wisconsin herds received the Herd of Excellence award. More info on the Star of the Breed can be found on page 15 and profiles on the Wisconsin Herds of Excellence will be printed in the September/October issue. During the Holstein Association USA Annual Meeting, Bob Webb was elected to represent Region 5 on the Holstein USA board of directors. Corey Geiger is serving his second year as the Vice President of the board of directors. Many Wisconsin juniors were also awarded honors during the convention. Holstein Association USA Recognizes Junior Members and their Exceptional Registered HolsteinÂŽ Cows with Annual Awards

Holstein Association USA is proud to recognize several youth every year for their accomplishments in breeding and developing outstanding Registered Holstein cows. National Junior Star Performer Award The National Star Performer Award recognizes well-rounded Holstein cows with exceptional milk and component production, as well as admirable classification scores. The cow must be bred and still currently owned by their Junior Holstein breeder; have an RHA of at least 87%; be enrolled in Holstein Association USA's TriStarSM production records program; have a 305-day or less lactation completed in the last calendar year, producing at least 25,000 pounds milk; and be classified VG-85 or higher. Once the eligible cows are determined, they are ranked based on a formula: (Combined ME Fat and Protein + Age Adjusted Classification Score) x (Breed Average ME CFP/Breed Average Age Adjusted Score). Annually, ten cows are recognized with this honor, with the highest-ranking cow being designated as the National Junior Star Performer. The 2017 National Junior Star Performer is Ryan-Vu Chelios Mocha owned by Dylan and Cameron Ryan. Mocha is classified EX-92 at 3-05, and calving in at 2-01, has a 297-day production record of 26,910 pounds of milk, with 1,396 pounds of fat and 919 pounds of protein. Tom and Gin Kestell Receive Elite Breeder Award

Recognized around the world for high-quality Registered Holstein® genetics, this year’s Elite Breeder has imprinted an international mark promoting Registered Holstein genetics. Holstein Association is honored to present Tom and Gin Kestell of Ever-Green-View Farms of Waldo, Wisconsin the 2018 Elite Breeder Award. As a result of 47 years of commitment to superior dairy cattle, Tom and Gin’s family now manages one of the world’s highest producing herds, as well as an exporting business. Tom and Gin have exported over 8,900 embryos in the last nine years to many countries including Russia, China, Germany, Brazil, Japan, India and the Netherlands. In 2017, they exported more than 14 percent of all U.S. dairy embryos. The Kestells started farming with little more than a dream. In 1971, they established Ever-Green-View Farms and started their farming career on rented land. Eight years later, they procured their current facility. Like many in the business, cash flow was tight during these early years. Tom says he did not invest deeply in genetics. In the mid-1980s, Tom started working with Dr. Byron W. Williams of EmQuest Embryo Transfer Service to expand his herd’s horizons. Embryo transfer work allowed Tom to influence his herd more quickly with a handful of his best cow families. Tom also wanted to export embryos directly from his farm to the European Union (EU). Ever-Green-View Farms is a federally inspected, EU-approved export facility for embryos. Many of their cows have been recognized with state and national records for milk, fat, and protein. Ever-Green-View Farms is home to the first dam and daughter duo to receive national milk production record status. Their first national milk production record holder was EverGreen-View My 1326-ET EX-92. She was the national milk production record holder from 2010-2015 and produced 72,170 pounds of milk, 2,787 pounds of fat and 2,142 pounds of protein, completing her 4-year-old record. The Kestell’s second national milk production record holder, Ever-Green-View My Gold-ET EX-93, held a 365-day record of 77,480 pounds of milk with 1,992 pounds of fat and 2,055 pounds of protein as a four-year-old from December 2016 to September 2017.

Holstein USA CEO John M. Meyer, Tom and Gin Kestell, and Holstein USA President Boyd Schaufelberger. Strong believers in helping others, Tom and Gin want to help improve the lives of farm families and advance the worldwide dairy industry. One of their most prominent contributions has been their faithfulness in helping young dairy producers develop their herds. The Kestells offer genetic advancement opportunities through an embryo sharing program to ensure that other dairy farmers have a chance to improve their genetics. The couple’s commitment to providing others the tools they need to help them prosper runs deep within their community. They have awarded more than 20 scholarships to area students in memory of their late son, Clay. About the Award The award recognizes a Holstein breeder who bred outstanding animals, making a notable contribution to the advancement of the Holstein breed in the United States. The Kestells are true ambassadors of both the dairy industry and the Registered Holstein cow. Tom and Gin recently were honored during the 2018 National Holstein Convention in Acme, Michigan.

To be eligible for the Star of the Breed award, a cow must place in the top five in her class at a National Holstein Show, be in a herd enrolled in the TriStarSM program and have an official classification score. Once the eligible cows are determined, the following calculation is used to determine the award recipient: Combined Mature Equivalent (ME) Fat and Protein + Age Adjusted Classification Score x (Breed Average ME CFP/ Breed Average Age Adjusted Score).

Coursework and Dairy Challenge prepared UW–Madison Dairy Science grads for careers Although Logan Voigts hadn’t been to this dairy farm before, he was pretty sure he’d find problems with the calves. Sure enough, when he got to the first pen, he saw listless calves with runny eyes and runny noses - clear indications of respiratory problems. But spotting the issue was the easy part. Now he had less than two hours to scope out the cause and start devising a plan to solve it. Voigts and three fellow University of Wisconsin-Madison dairy science majors were at the 2,500-cow California farm in April to participate in the 2018 North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge. While he was looking at the calves, teammates Tony Schmitz, Connor Willems and Charlie Hamilton were looking at the farm’s protocols for milking, feeding and other key functions. All around them, students from other U.S. and Canadian schools were doing the same thing: assessing the operation and coming up with ideas for improving it, which they would present to a panel of dairy experts. The winning plan had to be data-driven, cost-effective, and practical to implement on this farm. The winning plan was the one crafted by the UW–Madison team. It’s no small deal to represent one of the world’s top dairy science programs at a national dairy competition, but the Badger team was well prepared. They’d done practice runs on dozens of farms with seasoned coaching from UW-Madison dairy science professor Dave Combs, dairy science faculty associate Ted Halbach, and UW alumni who are now professional dairy consultants. They’d also honed the presentation skills that would help them sell their ideas to the judges. As they prepared for the contest, the teammates were also practicing skills they’d soon be using on a professional basis. All four graduated in May and now have jobs that involve troubleshooting dairy operations. “Dairy challenge requires a unique skill set,” says Halbach. “You need an understanding of dairy management topics. You can’t shortchange that. If you’re looking at stalls or milk parlor function, you need a comprehensive knowledge of standard procedures, what are the relevant benchmarks, and what are the practical alternatives that you can recommend. “You also need analytical skills to be able to take what’s observed and create an action plan out of that,” he adds. “And finally, you need to be able to present it. You get exposed pretty quickly if you’re missing any of those three.” The situation with the sick calves is a good example of how the team put these skills into play. The night before the farm visit they reviewed data about the farm’s milk production, feeds, herd health, reproduction and finances. One thing they noticed was that the number of calves being treated for pneumonia was above the norm. They also noted that the first-lactation heifers were turning in sub-par milk production - a sign that they might

be suffering residual effects of the disease. So Voigts, who was assigned to inspect the calf setup, had a pretty good idea what to look for. “When I got to the weaned calves I looked at the eyes and ears for signs of respiratory illness,” he recalls. “I saw the symptoms, so I began look for causes, and my first question was ‘Is this a moist environment?’” The answer was “yes.” The rice hulls used as bedding in the calf facility were damp near the surface. Voigts took a long look at the facility and concluded that its east-to-west orientation didn’t allow in enough sun to fully dry out the bedding. “It wasn’t feasible to reorient the calf barn, so we had to look for other solutions. What we came to was being more aggressive on managing the bedding,” he says. Back in their hotel room, the team looked up the price of rice hulls and the farm’s labor costs to estimate the cost of spreading additional bedding. Then they estimated what the sick calves were costing the farm—both the drug costs and the value of the milk that would be gained in first lactation if the heifers avoided respiratory illness. More fresh bedding seemed like a no-brainer. And apparently the judges agreed. Voigts, who now works at ST Genetics, says that the experience he gained preparing for dairy challenge events made him better at advising farmers on reproductive strategies. His former teammates echo that. “After visiting so many operations, I walk onto a farm having those experiences in the back of my head,” says Willems, now a feed consultant for Cargill Animal Nutrition. “It is amazing how I see (an issue) and pull back something we saw on a practice farm or a competition, and then think about how we went about creating a solution and whether that would work for this dairy.” Tony Schmitz, who is now a dairy nutrition specialist with Kerry, Inc., says that participating in dairy challenge taught him to zero in on large bottleneck issues and to prioritize those issues based on the potential for financial gain or overall improvement of the dairy. “I have learned a great deal by just trusting what the cows and the employees are showing you and then going back to see how the in-person analysis matches with the farm’s records and data,” he says. Charlie Hamilton is in a slightly different situation, because the farm he’s analyzing is his own. He and his parents operate a 65-cow Registered Holstein operation in Grant County, Wis. “Obviously it is a little different on my own farm, because I have more skin in the game, but I try to look at things through the same lens,” he says. “On any farm it’s easy to be blind to what’s around you. By having a consultant or approaching it like a consultant like we did in the dairy challenge, we have a fresh perspective. I try to look at things as if I’m not involved to see how I could make things better.” wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/July/August 2018-29

Mandy Sell & Sellcrest Boy Jodi-Red-ET Growing up, every Holstein enthusiast has at least one red and white animal, but Mandy Sell had multiple. Mandy grew up on her family’s farm, Sellcrest, in Watertown where they currently milk 100 cows with all but nine animals being Red and Whites. It was the first calf Mandy showed, Sellcrest Boy Jodi-Red-ET EX-91, that set the tone for a lifetime filled with Red and Whites. Mandy’s father, Rod helped walk her calf morning and night, teaching her about showing Jodi. That year at the District 8 Holstein Show, Mandy and Jodi made their first of many appearances in the show ring where Jodi received a blue ribbon. Later that summer, Jodi was named Junior Champion of the Dodge County Fair. If it wasn’t for Al White on the side of the ring telling Mandy how to set Jodi up, Mandy would have been completely lost. To this day, Mandy is still proud and cherishes that moment. The duo made countless trips around the show ring acquiring numerous winnings and countless memories. In 1995, before Red and Whites had a Junior All-American contest, Jodi was first place junior in the Senior Three-Year-Old class at World Dairy Expo. Mandy and Jodi continued their show run until Jodi retired. Jodi had numerous offspring and was a Gold Medal Dam and a Dam of Merit. “Maybe it was beginner’s luck, but I was hooked,” says Mandy. After Jodi, Mandy continued showing and developing Red and Whites with her family. While Mandy and her family still have descendants of Jodi in their herd, her success made Mandy’s passion for Red and Whites flourish. Mandy has been able to make her passion a career by working for the Red and White Dairy Cattle Association (RWDCA) as the Promotions Manager. She is currently serving as President of the Wisconsin Red and White Dairy Cattle Association and is an advisor to the Dodge County Junior Holstein Association. As the Dodge County Junior Advisor, Mandy helps junior members prepare and apply for Junior Holstein awards and contests.

District 3 Report Watch for your chance to advertise & promote your county association in future issues. The September/ October issue will feature District 7 - Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Marinette, Menomanie, Oconto, Outagamie, Waupaca and Waushara counties.

She attends the Junior Holstein Convention every year, helping organize quiz bowl teams and cheering on her junior members. Watching kids grow and develop their personalities and build confidence motivates Mandy to work with junior members. “It’s pretty special to watch young kids that are sometimes shy and quiet grow,” says Mandy. Today, more than ever before, youth are removed from agriculture. Mandy is using her passion for Red and Whites and working with youth by allowing non-farm kids to show animals from her family’s farm. She helps those kids learn about dairy animals and helps teach the kids how to show and take care of their animals. Mandy’s love for Red and Whites can be seen in her everyday life and it is because of the Red and White winter calf, Sellcrest Boy Jodi-Red-ET, that started it all.

One of our junior members, Lily Jenson, attended National Holstein Convention to participate in Dairy Jeopardy. Several of the junior members showed at the District 3 Holstein show and competed at the district and state 4-H Dairy Judging contests.

Breunig’s Bovine

BUZZ Hey there fellow Holstein enthusiasts! We’re right in the middle of the craziest part of the year - show season! So far, Brooke and I have kept ourselves VERY busy with school visits, Breakfasts on the Farm, county fair futurities, Cows on the Concourse in downtown Madison, Cow Camp, and of course District Shows! It has been so much fun to meet members of the association from all parts of the state and watch them exhibit the high-quality cattle that call Wisconsin home. One of my favorite classes at each Wisconsin Holstein show is the 10 and under spring calf class. It is so reassuring that our industry’s future leaders are starting to dive into their first show seasons and are so passionate about their projects and calves already! At your next

show, be sure to cheer them on or tell them “Good Job!” after they leave the ring - it’s sure to make their day. The one big takeaway I had from visiting so many shows this June was the sportsmanship shown. It is so cool to watch competitors shake hands after the show and tell each other congratulations, no matter the result. This organization also makes me a proud AGvocate because of the countless #JuneDairyMonth posts shared and created by our membership. These positive examples of Wisconsin agriculture and the dairy industry play such an important role in the public’s understanding of our community. For those of you who will be showing at your local or county fair in the coming weeks, make it a goal to reach at least one consumer each day about your animals and all you do at home to prepare them. Answer their questions and be sure to keep everything positive, it’s just that easy to be a great dairy ambassador! With state fair and state show just around the corner, I hope to see many familiar faces partaking in all of the events from competing in the classes or showmanship, to the Taste of State Fair! See you on the shavings! Allie Breunig 2018 Wisconsin Holstein Princess

Cow Camp 2018 - “Out of this World!” About 50 youth attended this year’s Cow Camp, held at Mt. Morris Campground near Wautoma. It was a weekend filled with fun and learning opportunities for youth ages 9 to 13. Thank you to our guest speakers and volunteers for sharing their time and talents with our youth. Showmanship by Emma Olstad Emma started by demonstrating the PDCA showmanship rule to make the wording clear to us. She then explained the importance of the rules, and how they protect us and our animals in the ring. We learned how to handle difficult and unusual situations in the ring to prepare us for the unexpected. Emma ended her workshop by answering our “What if ” questions and giving us her showring helpful hints. Show box and halter tying with Kati Kindschuh Kati showed us what we should put in out show boxes and what we should leave at home. She also explained how we can keep our supplies clean and in good condition. The most challenging part was learning and practicing a couple different ways to tie our heifers. While we were practicing, Kati explained why it is important to safely tie and untie our heifers. We played a game at the end to test how much we learned, and she had some tricky questions to answer. Cow pots with Hannah Ullom Hannah helped us paint flower pots to look like cows. We painted our flower pots white, and then we played a game of ninja while they dried a little. After we named a ninja master, we painted black Holstein spots and pink noses to finish our Holstein flower pots. TMR Snacks with the Princesses The princesses explained what nutrients are in different feeds and forages for our cows. They showed us what to include in a good ration for our cows. Then we got to make our own TMR snack with food like gummy bears for vitamins and animal crackers for silage. After we put our ingredients in a bag we shook them to make a TMR. Then Allie and Brooke talked to us about how close our TMR snacks were to the nutrients a cow needs. We were not very good at making the perfect mix of snacks, but they were tasty. Dairy Bowl with Joseta Halbur Joseta talked to us about activities and contests that the Junior Holstein Association holds. We played a round of dairy bowl with WHA related questions to test our knowledge and teach us how we can get involved. It was fun to play against other campers and learn about the WHA board and junior contests. We can’t wait to compete in dairy bowl at convention! Calf Care with Brynn Kasten We learned how to keep our calves health and happy. Brynn showed us simple tasks to keep our calves healthy like properly sanitizing water pales. She also showed us where bacteria can be hiding and how our calves ingest the bacteria. She swabbed one person’s hands from each group and measured the bacteria count. All four of the swabs had a higher level of bacteria than manure from a healthy cow. She finished the workshop with a question game to test our calf care knowledge. Safety with Molly Dorshorst We learned how to protect our eyes and ears on a farm. Molly showed and explained how we could injure our eyes and ears. Some of the eye injuries were really gross. She also taught us how to lift heavy items safely, and we got to practice with dog food and a block. At the end, we competed in a safety relay, and we had fun laughing at the JACs trying to put on all the safety gear. Hoof trimming with Dave Schmocker Dave showed us pictures of hoof problems, and how to fix them. While he showed us hoof problems, he explained how to use his tools. Dave also answered our many questions including how he became a hoof trimmer. The best part was checking out Dave’s chute and seeing how the hydraulics work. He also taught us how stay safe around a hoof trimming shoot.

Thank you to Alpha Genetics Inc., East Central Select Sires and NorthStar Cooperative for sponsoring the 2018 Cow Camp!

A note from your JACs

Hey Juniors! This summer sure has flown by and I hope it is going well for everybody. Congratulations to all the juniors who participated in the district shows. We hope to see you at state fair and state show. With that being said, we would like to invite all juniors participating at state fair to come to the Taste of State Fair on Wednesday, August 1. We have many cool games lined up that will not disappoint, one of which will be an ice cream eating contest. I won’t give away any of our other games, you’ll have to come and find out for yourself. We will be giving out prizes to everybody that participates so make sure to bring your friends! Also remember that the junior show at state show will be Monday, August 20 and showmanship will be Tuesday the 21st between the open heifer and cow show. So if you were in the top three placings at your district showmanship contest we encourage you to try and make it to state show. You do not have to use your own animal, you can borrow an animal from another exhibitor - but whatever animal you use must be entered in one of the shows. We hope to see a lot of you there! As the summer is flying by so fast, we encourage you to start filling out your award forms for junior convention. The Royalty, 12 and Under, YDJM, and DJM applications are all due September 20th to the Holstein office. That day will get here sooner than later, so get going on these applications. Also start thinking about filling out Long Range Production awards for your production cows and the Junior Progressive Breeder form. One last thing, it’s time to start thinking of educational ideas to make a folding display to compete at junior convention. Make sure to follow us on Facebook (Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association) and Snapchat (wisjrholstein) to keep up with all the goings on in the association. ACKY WPoint of View Editor’s Comments

Thanks for your patience to receive this July/August issue. Once we learned we were going to be short an employee this summer, we made a last minute decision to push the summer issue back so that I could help at the District Shows and some other WHA duties. But this also allowed us to be able to include all of the District Show results, so I hope it was worth the wait! Another change with the upcoming issues due to the late dates of the Championship Shows is that we will be combining the September and October issues which will come out of the end of September. This issue will include all of the late summer show results and will be a Midwest Holsteins issue. We’ll also be featuring District 7. If you are interested in advertising in this issue, please give me a call or email by September 7 to reserve your ad space. One project that isn’t changing is our annual Breeder Calendar. This continues to be one of our most popular pieces and will be handed out at our booth at World Dairy Expo and mailed with the November issue. If you would like to advertise for a month in the calendar, please give me a call or email. Months are assigned on a first come, first served basis so if there is a month that would work best for your 2019 marketing, don’t delay! The 2018 National Convention is complete and the countdown to the 2019 convention in Wisconsin is underway! We would love to be able to promote as many Wisconsin breeders as possible with the convention and we’re offering several different packages to help promote your herd. Info can be found on page 33 of this issue. Please call with any questions! And bookmark the 2019 Convention website to stay up-to-date on all the latest news... www.2019HolsteinConventionWI.com The November issue will be our A.I. feature issue with St. Jacobs ABC. Details will be coming soon, but if you have a St. Jacobs-sired offspring you’d like to feature don’t delay in getting a new photo taken. We’ll be offering discounted rates and incentives to make this a great value for all advertisers. Until next time...
