he new school year is about to begin and all I can say is . . . WHOO-HOO! I love my children more than anything in the world, but other mom's may agree that most of us are ready! After weeks and weeks of summer camps, strength training for fall sports and simply good warm weather fun, my girls are “soooo bored.”

School aside, our magazine focuses on family, and family does not stop with the children. I was happy to have the opportunity to spend time with residents, and employees of Via Christi's Ridge Plaza assisted living facility. It was such a pleasure to visit with these fantastic people, and hear their incredible stories. I encourage you to read their story and visit if you ever have the chance. Enjoy our back-to-school insert! We have highlighted several new products that you can NOT start the year off without! This issue is also full of fashion, great advise from a local dentist and fantastic contest info! Thanks to all of our readers and advertisers for your support. We're just getting bigger and better.

Now we get to do the ever wonderful back-to-school shopping. It's amazing how a few pencils here, and a few crayons there can add up so quickly especially when you have multiple children in your home. I have recently introduced my girls to the terms “retro,” and “vintage.” They now love going to resale shops and checking out ebay for the coolest gear. The thought of knowing that they are more than likely to be the only kid in the class who has it is a bonus.

s the summer comes to an end and school begins it is important for children of all ages to develop life long habits of brushing and flossing. Dental caries is the #1 bacterial infection in children and should not be taken lightly. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry children should see a dentist 6 months after their first tooth erupts and every 6months after so that parents are well informed in

Youthful Living, Senior Care

Cornerstone Ridge Plaza proves there really is no place like home

written by Cari Fischer

M

oving, for most, is commonly a stressful and frustrating time. For adults considering a move into an assisted living facility however, there is more to think about than just location. The quality of care received and affordability are two extremely important things to consider. Two years ago Chuck and Norma Dandurand were facing this incredible journey. After considering several other facilities, they found Cornerstone Ridge Plaza. “Location, location, location,” Chuck said as he talked about the setting of 8 | Wichita Family

the building. Cornerstone Ridge Plaza sits off of Ridge Road far enough to virtually eliminate road noise. You can also step out the back door for a view of the beautiful lake. Just adjacent to the building stands the brand new St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. For some, the thought of moving into an assisted living home feels like planning for the end. Jerry Carley, CEO of Via Christi Villages said, “We want to create a place where people can come and LIVE.”

Cornerstone Ridge Plaza In the past 20 years, senior care has advanced at a rapid rate. Seniors now have so many more options to choose from, and can customize their home for their particular level of care. Via Christi Village explains assisted living as such, “Assisted living offers a secure and supportive environment for

people who want to stay active, but prefer a little help with daily chores.” It gives seniors the option of enjoying their golden years in a quality and affordable community without the hassles of home maintenance. An assisted living home like Cornerstone Ridge Plaza, offers their residents the freedom to come and go as they please. Their apartment-like suites, as well as a host of amenities offer a secure and safe place for these residents to call home. Unlike a typical apartment, however, at Cornerstone Ridge Plaza the residents also have access to a dedicated professional staff, nutritious meals, inter-denominational church services, transportation, beauty and barber shop, and even a beautiful outdoor courtyard. “Healthcare is changing and Cornerstone becomes your new home. Your new family support system,” said Ben Oberle, administrator at Cornerstone Ridge Plaza.

The Vision and Future The Residents Cornerstone Ridge Plaza currently has 60 apartments and is licensed for 72 total residents. There are even apartments available for couples, like Chuck and Norma Dandurand, who have been married for 47 years. Administrator Ben Oberle, along with the activities director and a very supportive staff, keep residents active and engaged. “His youth puts life in this place,” said resident Cecelia Quint of Ben Oberle. “We have games upon games,” said Cecelia. “We look forward to our entertainment!” The residents are free to be involved in as much, or as little, as they desire. Cornerstone Ridge Plaza is a place for them to call home and to be part of a caring community. Seven years ago, resident Raymond Reeb found himself fighting pneumonia. With the help of his daughter, Ray made the decision to move into Cornerstone Ridge Plaza. “I feel safe,” he said about his new home.

“My vision, is to see grandma and grandpa pick up little Suzy or Joey in their golf cart and help out until their parents are off of work,” said CEO Jerry Carley. It is the vision of Via Christi to create a neighborhood concept with Cornerstone Ridge Plaza. The construction has already begun on a 80-unit skilled nursing facility adjacent to the current Cornerstone Ridge Plaza independent living building. The building would house four, 20-unit “neighborhoods.”

nursing currently in progress, the two connected buildings will make a future move less stressful. The vision of CEO Jerry Carley would be to eventually expand into a senior retirement village as well, giving seniors a place to retire and a neighborhood they would never have to move from again.

Each neighborhood would have its own family-style dining area, and all 20 units would be private rooms. “We want to create the future of senior care,” said Carley.
