CHALLENGE! 2015 AIA Wisconsin Convention & Building Products Expo

Program

Wednesday, April 22 Findorff Keynote Address

Beyond the Walls of Cool Spaces Stephen Chung, AIA 2015 AIA Wisconsin Design Awards Presentation 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Lecture Hall Celebrate excellence in architecture by participating in the presentation of the 2015 AIA Wisconsin Design Awards. This year’s awards presentation will be preceded by the J.H. Findorff & Son Keynote Address “Beyond the Walls of Cool Spaces” featuring Stephen Chung, AIA, host of “Cool Spaces!” public television show. Stephen Chung, AIA, decided to focus his energies on finding a way to share his passion for architecture with the general public — to bridge the gap between fellow designers and those who use the places we create. His hope was that if architects could better explain what they do, and why it’s important, it would increase interest in architecture. With a more engaged general public, there would be more opportunities for architects to build. Ultimately, the increased attention could lead to a better built environment including better designed, less costly, more sustainable and more beautiful spaces. Everyone would benefit. See how he’s doing it with PBS by highlighting one cool space at a time. Immediately following the keynote address, the Design Awards Committee will present the 2015 AIA Wisconsin Design Awards to the architects, owners and contractors responsible for the building projects selected to receive Honor Awards and Merit Awards. Join the celebration of design excellence and enjoy a special presentation on each award-winning project. The keynote address is made possible by the underwriting support of platinum sponsor J.H. Findorff & Son. (K2A: 1 LU/HSW hr.)

CHALLENGE! 2015 AIA Wisconsin Convention & Building Products Expo

Program

Thursday, April 23 Sustainability: The Future of Making Buildings Erin Rae Hoffer, AIA Dan Bayer, Assoc. AIA Andy Knauf Josh Lowe Mike Whaley Hall of Ideas H & I Technology Trends and Architectural Practice. New tools and standards, such as BIM, are now widely adopted in architectural practice. As client and project requirements change, design professionals are challenged to select the most useful innovations without being overwhelmed by the demands of technology. But how does design technology improve project performance, what is the return for this investment, and how is it most effectively applied at different stages in the process? The industry use of technology will change the architect’s work process in design and construction and may even lead to new opportunities for architects, such as in building operations. This session proposes a vision for the future based on the most promising design-oriented technologies today and presents a framework of approaches appropriate to architectural project stages. Case studies will open up an interactive conversation about where these trends may lead us and how best to prepare. (S2C: 1.5 LU hrs.) Interior Perspectives: The New Artificial: Authenticity and Materials Grace Jeffers Hall of Ideas G & J In this age of tree plantations, engineered lumber and bio board, what, exactly, does “natural” mean? And, are natural materials always a better choice than manufactured ones? Explore these and other issues that influence our decisions about natural and synthetic materials. Discuss the surprising truths about materials, confront some preconceptions and ultimately become a more educated specifier. We’ll discuss a new set of criteria for evaluating the authenticity and appropriateness of materials—especially wood. Weigh the impact of synthetic versus natural materials, including which has the better environmental outcome. Learn to tell new stories through material choice. You’ll see materials in a more realistic and holistic way. This seminar is sponsored by the IIDA Wisconsin Chapter. (S2D: 1.5 LU hrs.)

Participants will be able to define new and overlooked opportunities for creating social spaces, weaving public and private, and blurring the boundary between site and surroundings. Identify the value of an expanded conception of public space in creating culturally significant and sustainable architecture. Propose a range of design tools for improving public and social life, including unconventional techniques for programming, spatial configuration, material choices, and architecturally-integrated media. CHALLENGE! 2015 AIA Wisconsin Convention & Building Products Expo

Program

Thursday, April 23 Professional Development Seminars III 3:45 – 5:15 p.m. Select from three concurrent seminar sessions.

Design: 50 Shades of Gray: Drawing for Pleasure and Profit Bruce Bondy & Kurt Zimmerman, AIA Hall of Ideas E & F This workshop is intended to teach basic drawing principles and give architects and designers a framework for developing their own skills. Participants will work through a series of hands-on exercises designed to inspire drawing as an integral part of the design process. The workshop will improve confidence in skills with hand media in daily practice. Participants will learn techniques to improve making lines by higher awareness of body mechanics and drawing media choices. Attendees will explore how light, shade, and shadow make form. Various principles of depicting form: values, transition, hard and soft edges, law of simultaneous contrast, reflection, transparency, nature of materials. (S3A: 1.5 LU hrs.) Practice: Equity by Design Diane Chamness Tai Kojro-Badziak, Assoc. AIA Beth Partleton David Proffitt, AIA P.K. VanderBeke, AIA Lecture Hall In this fast-paced, ever-changing world, the business of architecture has been evolving at what often seems like lightning speed. There has been much discussion in the profession and the press in recent months about what the future of the architectural profession looks like, as well as discussion about what the community of architects looks like today, and how it must change in the future. Take the challenge and join architects from diverse areas of the profession as they share their insights and offer recommendations for the future of the profession. This seminar is sponsored by Ken Saiki Design.(S3B: 1.5 LU hrs.) Sustainability: Beyond Green Design 2015: Turning Strategies into Actions Joy Altwies Hall of Ideas H & I This presentation will build upon last year’s session, which highlighted strategies that architects could embrace to make their building designs truly “sustainable.” These strategies focus on owner engagement before design and technology adoption principles. Taking the next step requires turning these strategies into actions. The session will include ways for architects to help owners create high-value owner’s project requirements (OPR) documents, how to use those OPRs as project tools, and case studies demonstrating Rogers’ five adoption attributes in action. In keeping with the conference theme, Joy will describe a special “Challenge” that session attendees can join. If you missed the related session last year (or your memory has faded), don’t worry; Joy will provide a brief recap. (S3C: 1.5 LU/HSW hrs.)
