EDITOR Christina Birkett – Christina and husband Mel launched The Whitstable IMP in December 2008, around the same time their third daughter was born. As well as writing, editing and mothering, Christina enjoys singing and cake-making, has recently rediscovered running, and loves going to local gigs and exhibitions. Contact her at christina@the-imp.co.uk

CONTRIBUTORS Chris Haydon – Chris is 19 years old and has lived in Whitstable his whole life. Currently studying Film at the University of Brighton, Chris is an avid film fan and buff, and plans to go to the National Film School after University to study Directing Fiction Film and Documentary. He loves writing film reviews, and will be writing reviews for the IMP between course work and writing for the university’s paper, ‘The Pebble’. Malissa Taylor – South African-born Malissa is passionate about three things; Mamahood, Music and Mother Earth. She spends most of her time consumed by these and feels that her responsibility is to ensure that each is celebrated by everything that she does. Malissa loves to be part of, and write about, the Whitstable community and local music. Lucy de Pledge – Chestfield-based mother of two and self-confessed metalhead, Lucy works in Faversham as an estate agent, as well as providing the IMP with Festivals and Gig guides through her band and gig promotions company, LDP promotions. Contact her at www.ldppromotions.com or 07834 354618. Georgie Mind – Georgie is 18 and has lived in Whitstable most of her life. She is currently an art student at UCA Rochester and has a place to read English and Art History at the University of Sussex next year. She is very passionate about promoting arts in the community and thinks that the diversity of the wonderful Whitstable art scene should be celebrated! IMP Bookworm – Our bookworm is a local mum who has always loved reading and spent several years working in the Publicity and Marketing Departments of various children’s publishers. She was lucky enough to work with authors such as Philip Pullman, Jeremy Strong, Eoin Colfer and Terry Deary. She left the publishing world a few years ago when she had her children but has remained passionate about books and reading and can usually be found with her nose buried in a good book. Christmas Imp – The Christmas Imp works tirelessly throughout the year to make sure that the Christmas Issue is packed with tips, ideas, and Christmassy fun for the residents of Whitstable. A lover of marzipan and present wrapping, work experience has included helping Santa’s elves, being Stable Imp for Santa’s reindeer, and singing Away in a Manger at the annual Whitstable Choral Society Christmas Concert. The Christmas Imp is very small, quite mischievous, and believes glitter is magical (which it possibly is).

Sophie de Bouvier de Cachard – After spending the best part of her earlier years travelling around Europe and the British Isles, French-born artist Sophie finally ‘anchored’ her roots and heart in Whitstable 12 years ago where life by the sea is so endlessly inspirational. She works in oils on canvas, mainly, and is also well-known for her Bloomsbury-style furniture painting. Having worked extensively as a garden designer, Sophie has a special predilection for flowers, which also play an important part in her work and often appear as a foreground to her seascapes. She is working on her own website, but for now can be contacted by email at: smdebdec@btinternet.com.

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

Now recognised as the ‘home’ town with the most independent shops, according to the latest New Economics Foundation survey, Whitstable holds a wealth of Independent shops which help to make it what it is today. This month we focus on Copperfields on the High Street, owned by Dawn and Roy Reading. As well as looking beautiful from the street, the shop is now as easy to access as it is inviting. Dawn and Roy have managed to keep the traditional homestore look and feel; the familiar, homely elements of an old-fashioned shop (including the staff and service) but with a very up-to-date selection which is always changing. And even their very own website. Dawn confides: “Roy didn’t really want a website but I think we have to move with the times.” And they really do - but without leaving

R

oy is a retired carpenter who has lived in Whitstable all his life: “I’m like a fine wine, I don’t travel well,” he jokes; and Dawn has been here for 25 years, after moving from Herne Bay, so they know the area well, and already knew and loved the shop before they even thought of owning and running it themselves. “I’ve always enjoyed cooking, so I’d be in nearly every week to buy something for the kitchen,” Roy explains. “We knew Alan Tadman, who had the shop before us, and when he mentioned he was going to retire, we got the money by hook or by crook, and here we are!” “People thought we were mad,” Dawn laughs. But they took over the lease in October 1998, and Roy put his carpentry skills to good use, opening the shop up and taking some walls down to let more light in. They renovated the aluminium frontage with its awkward step into the shop (no longer in-line with disability laws) when the council offered grants to restore the original shop frontages in the High Street. Roy had original photos and was as faithful to them as possible.

anything behind. As well as the latest cookware and new-fangled espresso machines, they stock traditional seasonal decorations and oldfashioned gems of yesteryear you might have a job to find anywhere else - as well as the relatively new section with supplies for baking and cake-making, which is undoubtedly making a comeback. Sourcing stock is one of Dawn’s favourite activities. Roy points at the computer and confides: “She’s always on that thing!” And Dawn doesn’t deny it: “I’m on it all evening some days, I love looking for things for the shop!” And when she’s not on the computer, Dawn is changing the displays - not just the award-winning window displays, but the whole shop. “The trouble with changing the window displays,” Dawn jokes, “is that someone always comes and buys the big items, and then I have to start all over again!” Of course, Dawn and Roy do have to take some time out, and for Dawn that is mainly spent looking after, and baking with, her grandchildren. That’s where she’ll be most Mondays when she’s not in the shop. “It’s lovely having Mondays off with the children, it can get a bit hyper in the shop, with keeping on top of the stock and everything else. It’s good to have the time away.” Dawn and Roy are very appreciative of their staff: “We just couldn’t have a store like this without our wonderful staff,” Dawn explains. “When Jane and Richard are here, it’s like us being here. Without them, we wouldn’t have any freedom, and the arrangement works so well.” And they love seeing their customers for Dawn this is the very best part of her job. “People are lovely, we get some great comments and feedback,” she explains. “And, of course, we also double-up as a tourist information office!” Dawn keeps cards on local services and B&Bs for when she’s asked for advice by visiting customers.

“When we opened we just wanted to enjoy running a village shop - it has always had a reputation as a nice shop, and we wanted to build on that and enhance it,” Roy explains. And they’ve succeeded. But it’s not all sweetness and light. The words ‘rates’ and ‘lease’ were mentioned in rather sombre tones. For Roy, exChamber of Commerce Liaison Officer (with the Council) these aspects of being in the shop are less pleasing. “It would be nice if the council did help the independents more - it seems to be left up to us to make Whitstable what it is. Even some recognition of what we do for the town, and what we’ve made of Whitstable would be nice...” But I’m really left with the impression that, despite the challenges of the economic climate and our changing High Street, Dawn and Roy completely love what they do, and will still be doing it for a long time to come. Look out for their new season’s window display - in their own words, they “go BIG on Christmas!” Dawn and Roy have kindly donated five £10 vouchers for IMP readers - please email your name, address and phone number, an the subject: COPPERFIELDS to editorial@the-imp.co.uk, or write to our postal address: The Whitstable IMP, PO Box 290, CT5 9AH. Last minute Christmas Shopping Don’t Panic! It’s not too late... The official Christmas Celebrations start in Whitstable town centre on December 2nd at 5pm - but are you ready? Are you so organised that you bought everything in the January sales for gift-giving twelve months later? If the answer is yes, then there’s no need to read on. But there will always be some of us who leave everything to the last minute and go into denial from about August onwards...

COMMUNITY

T

08

he temptation is to give into the panic and snatch the first vaguely suitable gift from the nearest available shop. But wait! Last minute gifts don’t have to be panic-buys; it really is the thought that counts. So, first off, Don’t Panic. Whitstable is full of lovely local shops which cater for almost any taste. Most of our shops are staying open later than usual, and/or opening extra days, as well as on Christmas Eve, so you really could leave it until the absolute last minute if you make a list and plan a little first. Bring some nostalgia to Christmas - familyfriendly board games can give hours of fun; a beautiful tree ornament will hold memories every year when it comes out again; students will always appreciate money (don’t even attempt to work out what the ‘in-thing’ is); or, for family members and close friends, a collage of photos in a nice frame will brighten any Christmas - and the rest of the year, too. For an alternative present, why not go DIY - make up a hand-picked hamper or be very homely indeed and make mini-Christmas cakes or marzipan sweets (but be careful with nut allergies). Present them in a nice box or make one yourself - cover an old chocolate box in Christmassy paper

(ribbon optional), and people will have something they simply couldn’t get anywhere else. For the person who has everything, how about a box to put it all in? A jewellery box, a sewing box or colourful, personalised storage containers for children - hand-wrapped or decorated boxes are handy for storage above wardrobes or in children’s bedrooms, and don’t have to break the bank. Or do something really special - donate the gift of your time with an IOU in their Christmas Card. Offer to babysit so parents can take a well-deserved break, or spend a day gardening for someone. If you’re still stuck, there are always gift vouchers. Spa-breaks, restaurant vouchers, experience days, animal adoption and cookery or photography courses are unusual vouchers to give. Have a look at some of our advertisers or in What’s on? - many of these local businesses offer gift vouchers as well as a selection of gifts. Or you could buy tickets for a concert, the cinema, a sporting event - or a play, panto or Comedy Night at The Playhouse - check out the Gig Guide to see what’s on over the next couple of months. Use your imagination, take some time to think, Don’t Panic! - and you really can have a happy and stress-free Christmas... The Christmas Imp

ART IN WHITSTABLE Estelle Jourd When I asked Estelle Jourd why she loves Whitstable she answered, “It’s just in my blood!” Estelle is a well-established Whitstable artist and lives in a unique building in Seasalter. Built in the 1920s, her timber-frame house was made as a holiday home and was bought by her parents in the 1950s. Estelle has lived in the house since her parents died and has turned it into an almost open-plan studio, with her art workshop at the bottom of the garden.

responsible for ‘Sorted’ - a communityorientated Art Event that featured as part of the Biennale, which saw the masses sort all the pebbles on a beach into colour groups! Local schools Westmeads and Swalecliffe were involved in the project, as well as foreign students. Over the two-week period more than a thousand members of the public took part. When It comes to painting, Estelle focuses mainly on seascapes and landscapes. She jokes: “I never paint anything without a horizon...” But Estelle’s paintings are more than idyllic, quaint depictions of ‘life by the sea’. Her paintings of Whitstable beach are heavy with atmosphere. She doesn’t idealise the sea, she paints it as the powerful, often brutal, force that it is, uniquely capturing colour and mood. Her

just couldn’t bear to give it up,” she tells me. It is here that Estelle creates the wonderful paintings that were on show at the Caxton Contemporary’s ‘Art Mart’ on Saturday 6th November, Estelle has painted all her life and after studying at Kent Institute of Art and Design (now UCA) in the 1990s she began installation work as well as painting. She has exhibited widely in Kent and London, and has shown her work at prestigious galleries such as the Osborne Studio Gallery in London and also at the Stark galleries in both Canterbury and London. She has contributed to important national art events including our very own Whitstable Biennale, in 2006, and is a firm believer in ‘inclusive art’. Estelle was also

paintings have a thick, almost impasto surface; the paint is encrusted on the canvas creating a 3D effect so that the waves almost seem to wash out of the canvas. Estelle paints the sea as something awesome, sublime, fearsome, yet heavenly. She captures its calmness and its tempestuous waves equally; she shows both sides of its power. When looking at Estelle’s seascapes, one can really feel her passion for the ocean. Her installation work usually utilises natural materials and she is presently involved with the ‘Dead Man’s Corner’ project at the harbour, creating a ‘vertical beach’ - a wall made from manmade and natural pebbles! Members of the community are invited to create white pebbles from clay and write their names on them, to form part of the wall. The wall will form part of a performance space which will be completed by Easter 2011. This

opportunity is open to all; the Community College and local primary schools have already been invited to take part. The next pebble workshop will be at the Stable Bar in The Duke of Cumberland on the 2nd December from 2pm until 7pm. So if you read this in time, pop along and make your mark on Whitstable! Estelle’s work will be exhibited at the award-winning Sportsman pub in Seasalter from the 15th November until the 27th December and also in the Stark Gallery in Castle Street, Canterbury, from the 15th November until January 2011. Secret Santa... ...or Grinch Exchange? The Secret Santa gift exchange has become something of an office tradition. It works because it takes the pressure off who to buy for. Here we explain how to run a good Secret Santa - and then how to spice it up a little.

T

he traditional way of organising it is to put everyone’s name into a hat and then draw one name each, putting your own name back if you draw that. A budget is set, say £5 or £10 - and you then buy a gift for the person you chose. This should be done anonymously. On the day of the gift exchange the gifts are marked with the recipient’s name but the gift giver is not identified. Of course in a large office you may not know everyone well enough to feel confident about buying them a gift they’ll genuinely like, so you can tailor the Secret Santa a little. It’s easy for each person when submitting their name to add a list of three or four items they would like. The gift giver may then select one and be confident that the recipient will like it. But what about making the whole gift- giving experience more of a game? How about a Grinch Exchange, more of a ‘Seasonal Swap’? The beauty of a Grinch Exchange is that the gift doesn’t have to be suitable for one specific person, it can be absolutely anything within the set budget.

1 2

Player one chooses a gift, unwraps it and shows it to everyone else.

Player two can either choose a new wrapped gift or ‘steal’ the first. If they ‘steal’, player one chooses a new gift from the table, opens it, and shows it to everyone else.

3

Player three can choose a new gift or ‘steal’ one of the previous two gifts. The player whose gift is stolen can select a new gift… and so on. • A ‘turn’ is over once a new gift is taken from the table. • A gift may only be stolen once during a turn and, after three steals, is declared ‘won’ by whoever has selected it. Happy Swapping! The Christmas Imp

ubber Biscuit is one of our most loved and celebrated local bands. They are incredibly energetic and exciting to listen to. On their Facebook page, they state very clearly that the bands that they sound like are... Themselves! Absolutely. Though they cover some of the greatest songs of our times, they give those songs an extra layer which not only serve to improve the songs but help to generate Rubber Biscuits identity and reputation as an outstanding institution in our beloved Whitstable. They are an absolute joy to listen to. Wikipedia describes ‘Rubber Biscuit’ as: ‘a doo-wop song by The Chips, recorded in 1956. It was famously covered by The Blues Brothers... Few of the lyrics can actually be understood, as they are sung in the scat manner. Those that can be... tell the story of the singer eating various kinds of nonexistent food, including a “wish sandwich”... and a ricochet biscuit (that is supposed to bounce off the wall and into your mouth)’

16

I love this description and think it fits perfectly with how I would try to understand this incredibly versatile band... A lot of fun to watch, not only for their amazing musicianship, but also for no other reason than to enjoy; to suspend our intellect and enjoy with our hearts! Rubber Biscuit describe themselves as “a 12 piece Rhythm & Blues and Soul Band, renowned for its ‘big sound’ - brought about by a three-piece horn section, up to five vocalists, and four-piece rhythm section.” Their first performance was outside the Neptune in June 1992, and they’ve gone from strength to strength.

Having sold out the Marlowe in Canterbury on a number of occasions they have a deserved reputation for going the extra mile to offer something different to local music fans. As they say themselves: “The hallmark of a Rubber Biscuit gig is an infectiously energetic performance aimed at getting everyone on their feet and dancing.” This has turned their Christmas shows at the Kings Hall, Herne Bay, into the stuff of legend: the 500 capacity venue is usually full with a fantastic crowd, all keen to see what surprises the band has in store. In their own words: “It all began when a local Tom Jones tribute artist was invited to swap his backing tracks for a live band and perform a short set with the Biscuits. This was very well-received by the audience, so the band have been doing a ‘themed’ set every year since. Ska and Two-Tone, Glam Rock and even an unlikely Abba tribute have all featured; this year will be no exception.” The band hopes that the move to New Year’s Eve will generate an even greater party atmosphere and promise a night to remember; the perfect way to greet 2011. Try not to miss them at the Herne Bay Hootenanny on the 31st of December 2010 - 7.30pm at Kings Hall, Beacon Hill, Herne Bay, CT6 6BA. They also have a 17-track CD, Beat Well, which is their second studio album and is available to buy online, priced at only £10. This, or tickets to the Hootenanny, might make the perfect Christmas gift for someone you know - or why not treat yourself! If you are trying to buy the perfect present for younger children, it can be challenging experience. Finding the right gift and braving the toy shop can be bewildering at the best of times, and at this time of year it’s even more challenging, when you factor in the over-excited children and stressed parents (or sometimes the other way round)!

FAMILY VALUES

S

20

ome of toy shops are the size of small European countries, so how on earth are you expected to zero in on the perfect item? The best place to start is at home. Look at what each child plays with and, equally importantly, what they don’t. Are they imaginative, do they like dressing-up and roleplay games? Or maybe they enjoy building or drawing or solving puzzles? Maybe they’re into computer games? Also take account of their age. Most toys are labelled with an age guide and these are pretty accurate, but of course every child is different, so think carefully about their individual abilities. The age range on a construction toy may be spot on, but if the sixyear-old in question can’t sit still for a nano-second they’re unlikely to be impressed by a toy which requires sustained concentration. Toys fall into various categories: Creative, Role-play, Construction, Musical, Puzzles and games, Action toys and Computer games. If your child habitually plays with toys in one category, then that’s a good sign that other toys within that category might appeal to them too.

See if our local shops have anything suitable - it will save you a journey, support our local economy, and you’ll have friendly help or advice on hand if you need it. And if you need to get a specific item from a larger chain, find out what the shop has available before you visit, checking their website or catalogue, if they have them. Of course, even the youngest children will have ideas of their own and, especially at this time of year, it’s easy to feel pressured to provide everything they ask for. There is a real skill in being able to say ‘no’. Having a set a budget helps, as well as managing their expectations - perhaps let them make a wish-list of gifts, on the understanding that only one or two of them will make an appearance on the big day. Even Santa can’t give every child EVERYTHING they ask for! And if nothing else, it will help hone their negotiating skills... But perhaps the best and most precious gift you can give a child is the gift of your time. So get down on the floor and help them with the jigsaw, Lego model or artistic creation, read their new book with them, or enjoy a family game together. It’ll make their Christmas. The Christmas Imp

CHRISTMAS

BOOK

REVIEWS If you are stuck this Christmas for a present to buy a boy crazy about gory facts or a vampire mad teenage girl, then the following books, which are both available from Harbour Books, may be just the gift you are looking for…

Terry Deary, illustrated by Martin Brown ISBN 9781407115559 £3.99 Harbour Books With UK sales of over 11 million and global sales of over 20 million, the chances are you have heard of the Horrible Histories series of books or seen the Horrible Histories TV programme. Anyone who has ever read one of the books will know that this informative non-fiction series covers history - with the nasty bits left in! This special Christmas edition is full to the brim with all the gory and disgusting festive facts you would ever want to know about Christmas through the years, plus brilliant and very funny illustrations by Martin Brown. Discover some foul but festive foods, cruel Yule disasters and rude pantomime songs plus why carol singers knock at your door and find out who invented Christmas crackers. A perfect stocking filler for boys and girls age 5 to 95, who love a bit of gore and silly facts. Verdict: A fun, informative and fact filled book that is easy to dip in and out of and will keep the kids occupied over the festive period.

HOUSE OF NIGHT: MARKED P.C. and Kristin Cast ISBN: 9781907410116 £2.99 Harbour Books Hot on the heels of Twilight, the House of Night series might be just the thing for any vampire loving readers to get their teeth into (excuse the pun). Marked is the first book in a series of six books where vampires (or vampyres as they are known in the book) are a regular part of society. Vampires are created when selected teenagers are ‘marked’ in adolescence with a crescent tattoo on their foreheads. Once marked, they must go and live at the House of Night, a chain of boarding schools, where the fledgling vampires are trained and helped through the change into adult vampires. For me Marked creators PC Cast and her teenage daughter Kristin have tried a little too hard to capture a teenage voice and there are lots of clichéd characters and storylines, but it is an easy read and judging by book one, House of Night looks to be a popular series. All six books are now published and available, which is just as well as readers will be eagerly waiting to find out what happens next. Verdict: If you enjoy paranormal or vampire books, then this page-turner may be your cup of tea. But be warned, there are some racy scenes with adult and sexual content, so not one for pre-teens.

bout a year ago when I first read that there was going to be an American remake of Tomas Alfredson’s Swedish masterpiece, ‘Let the Right One In’, I felt the cool hand of sadness grasp my shoulder. American remakes are usually poor, and it seems that Horror movies always come off worst. I adored ‘Let the Right One In’ and I have been praying to like its dollar-bursting brother. After seeing promising stills, trailers and being incredibly pleased by the casting, it seems to be on the right track, but has ‘Let Me In’ won my heart like its European sibling? New Mexico, 1983. 12-year-old Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is a social outcast who drifts through life trying to avoid any obstacle that heads his way. In the blistering coldness of Los Alamos, surrounded by a snow-soaked and empty world, Owen is the victim of vicious bullying and finds comfort in solitude, expressing his anger and emotion at home alone. When a mysterious girl named Abby (Chloe Grace Mortez) moves in next door, he aims to become friends with her. Abby too is socially isolated, but for a very different reason... Her behaviour is deeply odd; she doesn’t wear shoes, she doesn’t attend school and the aggressive arguments in her home can be heard by the whole neighbourhood. As time goes on and various reports of murders and attacks swarm the town, Owen’s new found relationship with Abby is about to take a strange turn when he finds out that she is actually a vampire. ‘Let the Right One In’ showed audiences across the globe how beautiful and accessible Horror can be when it’s mixed with a perfect romance and a story about childhood and innocence, and ‘Let Me In’ does exactly the same. This is a perfect remake, probably one of the best I’ve ever seen, and here’s why. It shares a lot of similarities with the original, but surprisingly, a lot of it is different. There are a few scenes which uncover more about Abby’s father and this film is far more violent than the original. One of the studios behind the remake is Hammer Horror so the extra gore was perhaps inevitable, but this is not a criticism. Violence is one of Horror’s defining features and it’s used sensibly and brilliantly in this movie; the images of the thick red blood draining across the town’s snow quilt is something of rare cinematic beauty, and the violence supports key areas of the narrative, allowing it to be portrayed properly. Reeves clearly knows the core of this movie is its story, and he does nothing to take the audience away from this. Some scenes are also quite distressing; especially the bullying sequences which made my heart sink. They are executed and performed wonderfully which makes them so effective. The film also sports some beautiful cinematography; sweeping images of bent trees, snow-covered climbing frames and dimly-lit passageways add to the growing tension surrounding the characters and their world. The gorgeous and haunting score is also a really great addition to this already stunning picture. Film and TV composing legend Michael Giacchino supplies the goods and this is his best work since his score for Pixar’s masterpiece ‘Up’ and his great work on the television show ‘Lost’. The real heart of ‘Let Me In’, however, lies with the utterly brilliant casting. Smit-McPhee is an utter delight to watch. He was incredible in ‘The Road’ and he gives an outstanding and moving performance here. His character provides plenty to make you shed a tear. But for me, the star of the show is Mortez. She was the best thing about the fantastic ‘Kick-Ass’ earlier this year and she’s knocked the ball so far out of the park with this performance. Abby is an intriguing, equally wonderful and horrifying creature, and Mortez nails her so well. She’s rapidly becoming one of my new favourite actresses and I can’t wait for her next picture. So, in answer to my earlier question, yes, ‘Let Me In’ won my heart and it’s refusing to let go. My top 10 of 2010 is going to be so hard to write, but one thing’s for sure, this movie will be in there.

FILM REVIEW

Verdict: 5 out of 5 – Easily the best Horror movie this year; A clever, cool and incredibly beautiful film that’s layered with fantastic performances. Chris Haydon

... AND BLOGS Fun info for kids! Nine-year-old local Saphia Lestrade has set up her own website in her spare time, with a little help from her big brother, Micah. With information and video footage on days out, the latest games, and a calendar to keep track of local events, it’s worth checking here first before you plan anything for your children! Here we’ve reproduced her handy information about Dover Castle, but you can see the whole site, including videos, at www.funinfo4kids.co.uk

How about a day out at the famous DOVER CASTLE.There is lots to do for children and for adults, it is a very historical castle, which goes right back to the 1066! Henry VIII even stayed there. While your visit at Dover castle is underway you can go around the castle grounds and even look around the room Henry the eighth slept in! As it is coming up to Christmas there will be a special event that you can attend. Which will include; Santa stories/ history about the castle, and walking through the dark War time Tunnels.

Our children attended a skateboarding workshop and had a fantastic time. The coaches were patient, motivating and encouraging, with an obvious passion for the sport. We were able to hire the skateboards, helmets and protective pads - and when we came back 2 hours later the only thing that was worn out were the smiles from so much excitement. But this is only half the fun! Occupying the other end of the building is an indoor climbing centre, with classes for all abilities. Our children are desperate to go back and give this a try. There is a cosy waiting room for parents, where we spotted laptops and novels to help pass the time. Keen to try out their newly learned skills back home, we headed to the local skate park. We are very lucky, that here in Whitstable, we have our very own skate park that is a valued resource for the local children and adults. It was nicely busy when we arrived, with children of all ages on bikes, scooters, skates and boards. The time we spent there was trouble and accident free. The more experienced helped the less skilled and again there was an unspoken atmosphere of respect. http://mysterymothers.blogspot.com

Mystery Mothers For those of you who have kids, and big kids, who thrive on adrenaline, then Revolution makes a great day out. A little distance away, between Margate and Broadstairs you will find a thrill seekers paradise. Offering skateboarding, climbing, scooting and skating in an indoor arena, there is something to suit everyone here. The staff are cool, friendly and helpful and relate to the children without being condescending or authoritarian. A sense of mutual respect, independence and responsibility is created, with kids free to whizz around without colliding with each other.

Twizzle Brown & Lenny Sparkle

by Cassie Stafford

Christmas Custard The forest twinkled that night and the fireflies danced in the early moonlight. It was Christmas Eve and the stars shone brightly. Would Father Christmas be coming? He just might be. Lenny sat and watched the snow falling gently on the ground. There was not a whisper. There was not a sound. Then an owl hooted loudly nearby Was it a hoot or a really loud cry? The owl swooped down in front of Lenny’s window. It pecked and searched the freshly laid snow. Lenny opened his door. It squeaked and creaked The startled owl jumped and then continued to seek. “Excuse me Mrs Owl, is there something I can do? There seems to be something troubling you” Mrs Owl let out a wail. “My baby has gone. Have you seen him at all? He looks like me but he’s very very small. I’ve searched the forest high and low Oh where oh where did my baby go?”

CHILDRENS FICTION

“Don’t worry, said Lenny My feet are getting hotter. Let’s go this way. Maybe we can spot her.” Lenny walked into the forest while Mrs Owl flew overhead. They didn’t see her baby but bumped into Twizzle Brown instead. He now lay dazed and just about mustered, “Lenny you’ve made me spill our yellow custard.”

26

Lenny helped his friend up from the ground. Then they heard a hooting sound. The pile of leaves where Twizzle had fallen was now writhing before them. Twizzle stared at Lenny, who winked, towards the snow, which now below glowed a pretty pink. Lenny buried his hands in the snowy pile of leaves and pulled out a leafy little chap. He sat the bundle on his lap.

Mrs Owl landed gently beside the two friends who were now laughing at this little brown fellow. They peeled off a leaf and saw something yellow. His peeking eye fixed upon his dear mother who nuzzled his face revealing the other. She thanked her friends for all their help and then flew off into the night, holding her baby ever so tight. “Lenny my friend, what will we eat now that we’ve spilt our custard treat?” “Don’t worry my friend. We’ll find something nice.. Maybe some berries with cherries and spice.” The two friends went arm in arm through the forest, which was now calm. Then suddenly a “Ho Ho ho” rang out into the night. It gave the friends a little fright. A jingling of bells and a chuckle of laughter then a voice said, “Is this what you’re after?” Standing before them big red and bold was Father Christmas holding a bowl. Surprised and excited, they just couldnt speak. They tapped and wriggled and jiggled their feet. Then he placed it gently on the ground. “Merry Christmas Lenny Sparkle. Merry Christmas Twizzle Brown.” There they saw their favourite dish. It was their only Christmas wish. Christmas custard on Christmas eve.. the greatest gift they could receive. The two friends stood and smiled, “Thank you, sir.” they said, Pulling his hat firmly down on his head, father Christmas waved goodbye and set off into the starry night sky. They watched the sleigh soar out of sight. “Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!” Text copyright © Cassie Stafford 2010. A PEEK INTO THE PAST...

December 1914 – A Christmas Truce

CHRISTMAS

PUZZLES

O

ne of the most remarkable events of the First World War concerns the ‘Christmas Truce’ of 1914, in which the soldiers of the Western Front laid down their arms on Christmas Day and met in No Man’s Land, exchanging food and cigarettes, as well as playing football. The cessation of violence was entirely unofficial. There had been no prior discussion and troops acted spontaneously from goodwill, not orders. The most famous account of events involves British and German forces; however, French and Belgian troops also took part. No-one really knows what initiated it. There were some reports that British troops heard their German counterparts singing Christmas carols and joined but there were also reports of German and British soldiers erecting signs wishing each other a ‘Merry Christmas’. Driven by feelings of goodwill, home-sickness and combat-weariness some men crossed the lines with their hands up, and troops from the opposing side went to meet them. Commanders either turned a blind-eye or joined in. Food and supplies were exchanged and tools and equipment were borrowed. Games of football were played and bodies trapped within No Man’s Land were buried. In many areas the truce lasted for the whole of Christmas day but in some places the peace lasted much longer and it was several weeks before the bloody conflict resumed.
