The Last Supper Leonardo Da Vinci The Masterpiece revealed through High Technology EDITED BY HALTADEFINIZIONE PREFACE BY FRANCO GIULIO BRAMBILLA TEXT BY DOMENICO SGUAITAMATTI

THE LAST SUPPER

Leonardo Da Vinci The Masterpiece revealed through High Technology Edited by Haltadefinizione Preface by Franco Giulio Brambilla Text by Domenico Sguaitamatti 208 pages - 29.5 x 36.5 cm 140 color photographs Hardcover with jacket 978 88 544 0762 6

When Leonardo da Vinci began laying the first brushstrokes, in 1494, he probably had no idea he was about to create one of the greatest artistic masterpieces of all time. Adopting the innovative dry painting technique, the Renaissance genius could not foresee that he would have condemned his work to a particular fragility, and put its conservation at risk in the following centuries. This same technique, however, was what allowed an improved chromatic unity, a rendering of transparencies and light effects, and an extreme precision in details, visible only from close range. Today, thanks to the exclusive magnification published in this volume, even the smallest details of the Last Supper, invisible to the naked eye, can be observed in all their expressive splendor. As you leaf through this book you can admire from up close, as never before possible, the realistic expressions on the faces of the individual Apostles, the movements and positions of their hands, and the smallest details of the outfitted table, thus entering practically into direct contact with Leonardo’s genius at work. FRANCO GIULIO BRAMBILLA is a member of the CEI Episcopal Committee for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Catechism.

This book reproduces some of the finest pages of the Codex Atlanticus and examines da Vinci’s interest in many different fields, from military fortifications to anatomy, from war machines to musical instruments, from flight to botany. Halfway between a theoretical exercise and a specific practical purpose, Leonardo’s work emerges with all its visual force from the pages of this book, offering the reader further proof of the modern character of his ideas and providing a tangible sign of the greatness of a timeless genius. The high-quality resolution of the photographic reproductions of the Codex pages have enabled us to reproduce in this book details admired before only by scholars. The final section of the book contains a collection of descriptive summaries of the characteristics and contents of the plates of the Codex reproduced in the volume, accompanied by QR codes allowing access to multimedia content such as 3-D reconstructions of Leonardo’s machines, graphic reconstructions and in depth examination of the techniques used in his sketches. Mick Jagger EDITED BY VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS TEXT BY BILLY J. ALTMAN

Edited by Valeria Manferto De Fabianis Text by Billy J. Altman 208 pages - 25.5 x 29.5 cm 140 color photographs Hardcover with jacket 978 88 544 0763 3

There may have been musical rebels like Elvis Presley before him, but once Mick Jagger first burst on the scene in 1962 as lead singer for England’s convention-defying Rolling Stones, the mold was broken once and for all. Even fifty years later, his singing and performing style is still the benchmark against which all rock ’n’ roll frontmen are measured. And with good reason: Jagger’s distinctive, malleable voice and preening, prancing antics onstage have yet to be duplicated, let alone equaled or surpassed. Together with his childhood and lifelong “Glimmer Twin” pal, guitarist Keith Richards, chief Stones lyricist Jagger has co-written countless indelible rock and roll classics. Meanwhile, his reputation as a globe-hopping Don Juanesque lover have made him a simultaneously cursed, envied and admired international sex symbol. Remarkably, now seventy years old, Jagger is still going strong on all fronts – and with all his unique cheekiness and take-no-prisoners attitude gloriously intact. The ultimate “Midnight Rambler” rock ’n’ roll rebel. Valeria Manferto De Fabianis is an expert in photograph editing and the creation of images and has edited many books on photography. She has also conceived and mounted photographic exhibitions that enjoyed a great deal of success in various cities and foreign capitals. Billy Altman is a Grammy-nominated music critic and historian whose work has appeared in such places as The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Esquire and Spin. A former curator for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a consultant to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, he teaches rock, folk and jazz history courses in the Humanities Department of the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

John Lennon said: “We’re going to live, or we’re going to die. If we’re dead, we’re going to have to deal with that. If we’re alive, we’re going to have to deal with being alive.” Is there a curse on Rock ’n’ Roll? Is talent so powerful that it destroys? The death of one of the purest musical talents in recent years, Amy Winehouse, has reopened this and many other questions. The “Club 27” really does exist, and it includes some of the best musicians of all time, very young adults who created works of art but who were themselves overwhelmed by art. This volume tells their story: from the first, Robert Johnson, who is said to have sold his soul to the devil for the gift of Blues, on to Ian Curtis and Kurt Cobain, and passing through the runaway lives of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, the mysterious death of Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, and the fatality of “the day the music died” in 1959, when Buddy Holly’s airplane crashed. There is suicide as the only way to affirm oneself; there is transgression taken to extremes; there is mystery and senseless evil, manifesting in the pistol shot that killed John Lennon. There are stories that read like a detective thriller, like those of Bobby Fuller or Jim Morrison, and the touching human story of Freddie Mercury; there are Bob Marley, Keith Moon, and the absurd destiny that binds Tim and Jeff Buckley; but above all there is a lot of great Rock music. Because, as Neil Young sings in Hey Hey My My, “Rock’n’roll is here to stay. It’s better to burn out than to fade away.” MICHELE PRIMI is a journalist and television writer. He was born in Milan in 1973 and he currently lives in Barcelona, Spain. He writes for Virgin Radio and Virgin TV and he also writes about music and Rock’n’Roll culture for the magazines Rolling Stone Italia, GQ and Riders. He is the author of the monograph Queen and he has contributed to the book Legendary rock songs published by White Star.

An important part of the book is dedicated to Hard Rock, from which Metal derives. Indeed, it is not possible to speak of Metal without mentioning its roots, which lie in the classic Hard Rock of bands that made music history, bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. With exclusive pictures and the contribution of experts in the field, this book analyzes the development of these and other Hard Rock groups that played a significant role in the evolution of Metal through their sounds, lyrics, themes, and the trends they set.

Masters of Rock Guitar

Legends of Jazz

FOREWORD BY JOE SATRIANI, PREFACE BY ADRIAN BELEW TEXT BY ERNESTO ASSANTE

PREFACE BY JOE LOVANO TEXT BY BILL MILKOWSKI

The guitar has always been a protagonist of extraordinary pages of jazz history, it was the queen of folk and blues, and in its electric embodiment, it was the basic stone of rock’n’roll. We want to celebrate the electric guitar myth and legend, the extraordinary instrument that turned into a key to open the doors of sensation, creativity and of life itself. Lots of figures have contributed to this history: legendary musicians as Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Brian May, Eric Clapton, Santana, Ben Harper, Jimi Hendrix. This volume is a handsomely illustrated tribute to the instruments that have earned these guitarists their reputations as some of the greatest musicians of all time, this volume will strike a chord with music enthusiasts of all ages.

Arguably America’s most profound cultural contribution, jazz has evolved for over a hundred years since its birth in the ethnic gumbo of New Orleans at the dawn of the 20th century. Like a mighty river, it has wended its way over time through geography, style, and mood, forming numerous tributaries along the way. This elegant volume is a portrait gallery of 50 eminent legends spanning jazz history, from Jelly Roll Morton, perhaps the inventor of the art form, to contemporary axman Joe Lovano, who contributes a foreword. Each figure is featured in handsome vintage photographs and a pithy, revealing biography.

More Than Just a Kiss The greatest love movies TEXT BY ROBERT MARICH

MORE THAN JUST A KISS The greatest love movies Text by Robert Marich 288 pages - 26 x 30 cm 186 color photographs Hardcover with jacket 978 88 544 0572 1

This book presents a collection of the greatest love movies, etched in the public’s mind for their romantic stories featuring famous actors, framed in epic surroundings, and delivering memorable words. Fifty memorable films, from the black and white era to today, are handsomely presented and analyzed in words and pictures. The book explains their enduring appeal, provides entertaining insight on the talent that made them, and points out little known but fascinating bits of their history. The sophisticated atmosphere of English Patient, elegiac style of Out of Africa, and pageantry of Shakespeare in Love. The book has plenty of star power provided by Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Tom Cruise, Meg Ryan, Richard Gere, Hugh Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart and others. And then there are the words that inspire the romance! From When Harry Met Sally…, the Meg Ryan character captures the sad plight of wounded hearts on the rebound with “The first date back is always the toughest, Harry.” And a non-sensual phrase from Casablanca somehow resonates forever with moviegoers as a romantic/tragic farewell in “Here’s looking at you kid.” Film journalist/analyst ROBERT MARICH, who authored the book Marketing to Moviegoers, has a quarter century experience writing about film and media. His article have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Variety, Hollywood Reporter and London-based Screen International. Marich recently finished editing and revising the latest edition of a college textbook about the music industry. Now based in the New York City area, he has covered film while living in Los Angeles, London and New York.

The series is also available in reduced format: 21 x 24 cm

I LOVE PASTA

An italian love story in 100 recipes Edited by Academia Barilla 272 pages - 20 x 26.5 cm Hardcover with slipcase 978 88 544 0784 8

With pasta, it is love at first sight… or perhaps we should say love at first bite. It is a love that continues due to pasta’s infinite variety of shapes, colors, scents and flavors. There are countless stories, styles, techniques and condiments. From spaghetti with tomato sauce, the epitome of simplicity and elegance, to delicious oven-baked cannelloni, pasta breaks all world records for taste and creativity, both in Italy, where it is a national monument, and abroad, where it has conquered tables and lifestyles across the board. As any pasta lover knows, to reach the height of pleasure, each pasta shape – and the Italian cuisine boasts countless varieties – must find its “twin sauce” in order to enhance it to the fullest. This recipe book stems from the desire to relate how the personality of each shape, made up of weight, structure, thickness and surface, makes it best suited to the sauce that, in the annals of history, has shown greater gastronomic affinity with its nature. One hundred recipes recount as many successful love affairs. Each was born in Italy, and adapted to any place endowed with suitable ingredients and conviviality. And each, from egg tagliatelle with Bolognese sauce to bucatini Amatriciana, and from orecchiette with turnip greens to Genoese minestrone with ditalini rigati, is just waiting to be devoured. For BARILLA, it’s not just about being a world leader in pasta production. It’s about producing culture. To fulfill its mission to spread authentic Italian cuisine, of which pasta is the undisputed queen, throughout the world, in 2004 Barilla created the international Academia Barilla center, equipped with technologically advanced teaching and practical training environments and a rich gastronomic library featuring a unique collection of its kind.

125 Million Traditional italian gourmet menus EDITED BY ACADEMIA BARILLA

125 MILLION

Traditional italian gourmet menus Edited by Academia Barilla 160 pages - 18.5 x 29.5 cm Hardcover, wire-o - Elastic band 978 88 544 0774 9

This volume is a veritable gold mine of ideas for inventing menus that are always new, playing on an incredible number of combinations. The practical spiral binding, in fact, conceals a valuable secret: the capability of multiplying, almost countlessly, the possible combinations among various types of dishes. Thanks to a simple mechanism that makes it particularly easy to consult, the 220 recipes, in combination with one another, can produce a staggering total of more than 125 million potential menus, every one different. On each page, there are horizontal cuts separating each of the four sections – dedicated to appetizers, first course dishes, main course dishes, desserts – from one another. The different parts of each page can be turned independently, allowing you to leaf through, select, and reposition a recipe from among any of those in the volume for each one of the four courses, allowing you to compose a complete menu for today’s meal, enriched with a side dish if you like, based on a different combination each time. The 220 basic recipes are accompanied by a broad introduction that contains valuable information about the best combinations between various foodstuffs and ingredients, as well as some suggestions for the best use of this amusing, easy, and never repetitive reference tool. ACADEMIA BARILLA, launched in 2004 in Parma by the world’s largest pasta producer, is devoted to the preservation and promotion of the Italian gastronomic tradition through courses taught by renowned chefs, gastronomic tours, the hosting of meetings and culinary laboratories with noted specialists, and the publication of books like this.

100 Easy Recipes Italian Cuisine EDITED BY ACADEMIA BARILLA

100 EASY RECIPES

Italian Cuisine Edited by Academia Barilla 160 pages - 20 x 20 cm Hardcover 978 88 544 0768 8

For this volume, the Academia Barilla has selected 100 easy recipes from Italian cuisine, all characterized by straightforward execution. In these recipes, respect for the territory – seen not only as a physical space, but also in social and cultural terms – and investment in the legacy of the past have come together, with a pinch of poetry and innovation. Not only the typical dishes have been consecrated by tradition, but also the creations that are typically Italian for their successful alchemy of gastronomic intuition, executive ability, and use of great products typical of the Bel Paese. And in the culinary universe of the peninsula, even though there are dishes with considerable complexity, the overwhelming majority are characterized by the elegance of simplicity: they require just a few ingredients of very high quality, and the creativity and care to bring out their best in just a few steps. Perhaps this is because the majority of the jewels of Italian cuisine – which also include many recipes of aristocratic ancestry – come from dishes with a humble origin, born making use of inexpensive, everyday ingredients, and yet filled with imagination and flavor.

CATALOG 2013 - 2014 DREAM TRAVELER

The World’s 100 best Adventure Trips JASMINA TRIFONI “Adventure is worthwhile in itself” said the aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart. Roald Amundsen, one of the most intrepid explorers in History, put it much more prosaically when he declared that “adventure is just bad planning”. Whichever way you look at it, the spirit of adventure is intrinsic in all of us; it is just a question of finding the right key to unleash it. And that is precisely what this book proposes to do with a collection of 100 adventurous journeys to the four corners of the Earth, on foot or by bicycle, by sailing boat or by off-road transport or even by more “exotic” means of transport, to plunge into the wildest forms of Nature or to encounter peoples who are very different from ourselves, and even to test our physical limits in extreme sports. Some of the adventures included in the book only last a few days, while others are epic journeys – in the Amazon Forest, along the Grand Trunk Road, the “travelling continent” between Pakistan and India or across the ice of the Antarctic – that will be remembered as once in a lifetime experiences. The chronicle of each one of these journeys, all of which are truly special, is accompanied by spectacular pictures and practical information and advice because, as Amundsen said, a perfect adventure must be well organized. JASMINA TRIFONI was born in 1966 and graduated in Political Science at the University of Padua. She is a journalist who is specialized in the field of tourism and worked for ten years in the editing department of Meridiani. She is now a freelance journalist and writes for the major Italian magazines in the sphere. Together with Marco Cattaneo, she wrote Afghanistan: le donne, la guerra, l’Islam (Afghanistan: women, war and Islam, 2001), in collaboration with Emergency. Trifoni and Cattaneo have also written the work on Unesco World Heritage Sites in three volumes – I Tesori dell’Arte (The Treasures of Art, 2002), I Santuari della Natura (Nature Sanctuaries, 2003) and Antiche Civiltà (Ancient Civilizations, 2004) as well as Grandi città del mondo (Great Cities of the World, 2005) and 80 Isole dove fuggire… e vivere felici (80 Islands to Escape to... and Live Happily Ever After, 2012) for White Star. She is a traveler both by profession and by vocation and has gained considerable ethnic and cultural experience, particularly in India, the countries of Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

The Great Cities of the World TEXT BY ELENA BRUNOLI Megalopolises designed in the third millennium, or metropolises marked by the many contradictions of modern development. Historic cities with a wealth of monuments or urban models still surrounded by wild nature. Today, cities of the seven continents are the environment in which the majority of the planet’s population is concentrated. Every city has its own style, its own model of life, its own horizon of reference, whether these are soaring skyscrapers, gothic spires, or endless residential neighborhoods. This volume and the splendid photographs accompanying it give an original and unusual view of the diverse forms and interpretations made for the inhabitable urban space, by architects, engineers, administrators, and simple inhabitants. ELENA BRUNOLI, a professional journalist, polyglot, and travel buff, has worked for over 20 years in the editorial department of the famous monthly Tutto Turismo. A traveler by choice as well as by profession, Brunoli has cultivated this passion as a freelance, concentrating more and more on the theme of urban growth. 48 Reasons why my dog steals my underwear!

48 Reasons why babies and puppies are alike!

TEXT BY JULI-ANN CIALONE

TEXT BY JULI-ANN CIALONE

Many people have asked me how I came up with the concept for this book. Well, to be honest, it is completely the fault of my puggle dog named P. Diddy. One day I walked into my bedroom to see my sweet dog happily atop my bed wagging his tail with my brand new super-expensive underwear wrapped around his snout. Of course he had joyfully ripped it to shreds. I looked at him and with exasperation asked, “WHY???!!!!”. So I began thinking... what would he tell me if he were to answer? And then the excuses began to flow!

After many years of photographing people and pets of all ages, I happened to notice that in particular babies and puppies create about the same level of difficulty when I photograph them. During the sessions, the same tricks work to get their attention: squeaky toys, food bribes, fake coughing, sneezing, clapping and spitting, and of course embarrassing myself by making weird high-pitched noises, barks and squeals. But the end result is always breathtaking – beautiful, bright eyes and stunning expressions from these tiny inquisitive creatures!

Horses Master portraits PHOTOGRAPHS BY FABIO PETRONI FOREWORD BY OLIVIERO TOSCANI PREFACE BY MEREDITH MICHAELS-BEERBAUM The history of horses is tightly interwoven with that of humanity, which owes its equine friends a great deal, from fieldwork to transport, from traveling and discovering to sports. This volume is a tribute to mankind’s tireless companion. Clever use of light, which comes from Petroni’s long experience as a still life and portrait photographer, has enabled him to create original images, with a style that is somewhat unusual for animal photographs – a style that is spectacularly enhanced thanks to the book’s large format. The thing that, above all, has enabled the photographer to communicate so directly the true essence of these magnificent quadrupeds is undoubtedly his emotional closeness to his models, the result of love and knowledge developed over so many years. Here, in front of the camera, are smart, timid, aggressive, proud, indolent, protective, curious, and gentle horses, in an explosion of emotions. FABIO PETRONI lives and works in Milan. After studying photography, he turned professional in 1984, since then he has worked with some of the most famous names in international photography. He works with some of the top advertising agencies and has been involved in campaigns for well known national and international brands. His particular focus is on portraits and still life, areas in which he has demonstrated his intuitive and rigorous style. He is the official photographer of the IJRC (International Jumping Riders Club), and is responsible for the public image of major international horse-riding. OLIVIERO TOSCANI is known as the creative force behind the world’s most famous newspapers and brands, and as a conceiver of successful corporate images and publicity campaigns. The recipient of prestigious international awards and recognition, he is Accademico d’Onore at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence. He lives in Tuscany, where he produces olive oil and wine and raises horses. MEREDITH MICHAELS-BEERBAUM is a German horse riding champion. She has been devoted to show jumping since she was a young girl, and has become one of the most successful athletes at both European and international levels. She has won various medals both in team and individual competitions. She was the first woman ever to rank number one in the international show jumping ranking of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI).

Orchids PHOTOGRAPHS BY FABIO PETRONI TEXT BY ANNA MARIA BOTTICELLI Bewitching, sensual, disturbing: orchids, whose natural species number over 25,000, have forever sparked overwhelming love. Cartier took inspiration from the exquisite blossoms of the Phalaenopsis to create a precious collection of jewels. The volcanic British stylist Vivienne Westwood mixes them extravagantly, in the living room of her home, with paintings and books. One of the most prestigious fashion houses in France, Van Cleef & Arpels, chose one, the Vanilla fragrans, for its very famous and unmistakable perfume. Illustrious personages, artists, and adventurers, dressed in the garb of enterprising plant hunters, have gone round the world in search of them, bringing them back to the West. Important entrepreneurs have become fanatic collectors of them... It is not unusual, then, for even a master photographer like Fabio Petroni to be so deeply struck: he decided to portray them in still-lifes, to present us with close-ups, macros, and details of great charm and appeal. Roses PHOTOGRAPHS BY FABIO PETRONI TEXT BY NATALIA FEDELI “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” wrote William Shakespeare. And many other poets and writers have dedicated lines to these beautiful flowers that have always adorned and embellished gardens and houses. Wonderful petals, a thorny stem, warm but at the same time delicate colours and an enchanting and intoxicating fragrance. These are the secrets of the rose, of which, however, the true essence remains elusive. A master of still life photography, Fabio Petroni, has turned his attention to roses in all their infinite manifestations. Through his lens, he has endeavoured to capture those aspects and details that make this flower, the symbol of love, grace, and the most intimate secrets, unique. Spectacular pictures, an elegant editorial format, wonderful close-ups and a final section that features the history and characteristics of the varieties of roses photographed. These are the secrets of this large-format publication, in which roses are the absolute protagonists and in which the pages merge with the petals. FABIO PETRONI, after taking up photography, has worked with the top professionals of the sector. His professional career path led him to specialize in portraits and still life, fields in which he distinguished himself for his intuitive and meticulous style. He works with the main advertising agencies and has authored numerous campaigns for prestigious, internationally renowned companies and firms. For White Star, he has produced Horses. Master Portraits (2010), Mutt’s Life! (2011), Cocktails (2012) and Supercats (2012). NATALIA FEDELI works for Gardenia, the first Italian monthly magazine about plants, flowers and green lifestyle, editing the section on floral decorations, florists, flower designers and artists/craftsmen engaged in the world of flowers. Her cultural background, personal interests and experience have always revolved around her love of nature, and all that is beautiful, two aspects she is also involved in professionally.

A Matter of Fashion 20 Iconic Items that Changed the History of Style EDITED BY VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS PREFACE BY ALBERTA FERRETTI, TEXT BY FEDERICO ROCCA One usually thinks of the fashion world as ephemeral, but there are creations and names that have left their mark and that, in different ways, have revolutionized the history of fashion and have also mirrored the changes made in society. Indeed, nothing has been the same since the birth of the Burberry trench coat, ballerina pumps or Givenchy’s black sheath dress. Every couturier, fashion designer or fast fashion stylist has had to come to terms with their existence by referring to, elaborating on or simply copying what are now considered classics. Some of these are known by the name of a person, such as the Kelly bag or Borsalino hat. Others have existed for decades, even taking on sociopolitical connotations (for example, Levi’s, which were originally work trousers, became the “uniform” of the young rebels in the 1960s). Yet others, such as the Hermès scarves, continue to be a status symbol. This book presents the history, anecdotes, celebrities and intrinsic values connected to the must haves of fashion. VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS is an expert in photograph editing and the creation of images and has edited many books on photography. She has also conceived and mounted photographic exhibitions that enjoyed a great deal of success in various cities and foreign capitals. ALBERTA FERRETTI began her life in the world of fashion when she was only 18, when she inaugurated her first boutique. This marked the start of a career filled with successes, both personal and entrapreneurial, including certain milestones such as the foundation of her firm in 1980 together with her brother Massimo Ferretti, her official debut on the Milan runways, and the rapid growth on an international level. FEDERICO ROCCA earned a degree in History of Italian Cinema at the University of Bologna. He then worked in the cinema department of the Telepiù and Sky television companies, later concentrating on fashion. A professional journalist, he is presently fashion editor of www.style.it, a Condé Nast fashion portal.

These women helped revolutionize the concept of femininity and, through their personalities and the events in their private lives, featured prominently in the media for years. Stories of unforgettable lives and intimate portraits are celebrated in a book without precedent. ANNA MOLINARI was born and started to work in Carpi where she still lives and works. After finishing school, she started working for her parents’ company, a famous knitwear manufacturer in Carpi, where she acquired experience and perfected her techniques. In 1977, she decided to leave her parents’ company to take the plunge into the world of fashion; together with her husband Giampaolo Tarabini, she founded Blumarine. And this is how Anna Molinari’s fairy tale began. As a designer, she is endowed with incredible creativity and joie de vivre that she transmits to all her collections. PAOLA SALTARI was born in Bondeno, in the Province of Ferrara in 1974. She graduated in political science at the University of Bologna with a thesis on sociology in fashion, then completed her master’s degree in communication at the European Fashion School in Milan, before becoming a professional journalist. She has worked for Edizioni Moderne Internazionali and the weekly Grazia. In 2003, she joined the editorial staff of Vanity Fair as the deputy head of style.

Lingerie

The evolution of seduction

EDITED BY VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS TEXT BY ANNA FOLLI From the crinoline to thigh highs, and from the corset to the G-string you can choose to conceal or to reveal, the important thing is to be liked and to like yourself. In this book, the history of lingerie is seen both for its elegance and from an ironic angle. Starting from the first bodices and corsets which were true instruments of constriction hidden under layers of crinolines, we come to the glittering and theatrical display of lingerie on the catwalks of the most recent fashion shows of Victoria’s Secret.

Pop Art TEXT BY MARTINA ANGELOTTI, WITH VALENTINA CIUFFI AND VERONICA LENZA A pop-tastically compact compendium of art’s most fabulous and irreverent movement

POP ART

Text by Martina Angelotti, with Valentina Ciuffi and Veronica Lenza 272 pages - 22.2 x 28.8 cm 147 color photographs Flexibound with flaps and jacket 978 88 544 0579 0

For students of modern art, advertising, and design, this compact overview of Pop Art gathers nearly 200 full-color reproductions of its masterpieces with newly commissioned texts that trace the history of the iconoclastic movement from its origins in the U.K. through its explosion in the U.S. and subsequent European incarnations. Readers are shown how “Popular Art” brought about a jarring break from earlier artistic traditions, as the new power of technical reproduction stripped away their qualities of unrepeatable uniqueness. Featuring a special introductory chapter on Andy Warhol, the genre’s most infamous figure, and brief biographies of each artist represented, the book shows how Pop Art objectified mass-produced imagery from the new media of advertising, Hollywood movies, television, comic strips, and popular literature, deftly and often hilariously breaching the gulf between high and low art.

Dream Cars of the XXI Century PHOTOGRAPHS BY RON KIMBALL TEXT BY MASSIMO MAMBRETTI

DREAM CARS

of the XXI Century Photographs by Ron Kimball Text by Massimo Mambretti 208 pages - 38.5 x 27.5 cm Hardcover with Jacket 978 88 544 0778 7

It seduces both men and women indifferently, especially when it is powerful and luxurious. Even more so when it is unique, or nearly so. The specimen of the high-end luxury car is not only the utmost interpretation on the theme of the automobile, but it is also the inspiring Muse for the creativity and skills of designers and engineers, as well as the dream of all enthusiasts. There never passes a year, nor even a month, without new award-winning supercars coming out. And it matters little whether it is a One-Off, a specimen Just For The Few, For Many But Not For All, or an Instant Classic. Still, it could be the interpretation of concepts destined to exalt its performance – like the lightness of a Featherweight – or to generate (today), with their concept outfitting, automobiles that Will Be Famous. The images and texts in this volume recount the stories of the most important supercars of the last decade. A roundup that entrusts the automobile with what is, perhaps, the best of all roles: that of arousing emotions. RON KIMBALL is an internationally renowned photographer specializing in the automotive industry. A remarkable number of exotic autos have been scrutinized in his studio, from the last concept cars to the classic autos of the 1950s. Through his unwavering gaze, Ron Kimball’s photography makes each snapshot a work of art. For over 30 years, his works have been published worldwide. He has authored publicity campaigns, calendars, product packaging, greeting cards, posters and books. His splendid photos appear frequently on numerous magazines such as Time, Newsweek, Business Week, Auto Trader Magazine, Condé Nast Traveler, National Geographic and Car and Driver. MASSIMO MAMBRETTI debuted in the publishing sector as a writer for the Gazzetta dello Sport. In 1980, he became a member of the editorial staff of the Quattroruote magazine. He then transferred to Gente Motori magazine and at the turn of the 1980s was made a special correspondent for the weekly magazine Auto Oggi. In 1997, choosing to continue as a freelance professional besides being engaged in editorial activities, he became Press Office Director of the Bologna Motor Show and the Auto Salon of Turin. He subsequently returned to full-time work in the publishing sector and currently collaborates with the newspapers Il Giornale and Sole 24 Ore as well as the magazines Automobilismo and La Mia Auto. www.kimballstock.com.

TEXT BY GIACOMO AGOSTINI TEXT BY LUIGI CORBETTA

The legendary models

Packed with archival and specially commissioned photographs, this stunning volume chronicles the evolution of the motorcycle, from early 1910’s until today, documenting the major milestones in this illustrious history and spotlighting the most influential models that have emerged over the last century. Among the manufacturers whose bikes are represented are BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Moto Guzzi, Suzuki, Triumph, Yamaha, and many more. Accompanying the extraordinary photographs are the stories behind the vehicles, with a wealth of technical information about each motorcycle.

For over a century the Harley-Davidson motorcycle has earned its status as an icon of American rugged individualism by fulfilling the promise of pleasure, power, freedom and adventure on two wheels. In spite of competition, the HarleyDavidson enterprise has prevailed because of the innovations it has introduced and because it has diversified its family of motorcycles to meet the high standards that cycling aficionados have come to expect. This book invites you to climb into the saddle and discover the glory of engineering and design that is Harley-Davidson.

Motorcycles The legendary models TEXT BY ANDREA RAPELLI This book aims to trace the fundamental stages of the evolution of the motorcycle, from the first rudimentary experiments on two wheels, up to the hypertrophic motorcycle of today. And always with a choice of models that have succeeded in marking an era: from the first rattling Harley-Davidson of the 20th century to the jewels of Japanese technology, the Honda and Kawasaki from the 1970s and 1980s, passing through the no less important columns of Italian motorcycling, such as the Ducati 916 or the Guzzi GT 500 Norge, and continuing on to the models just out on the market. A trip through time – outfitted with splendid images, detailed diagrams, and data sheets – that will lead bike enthusiasts through the sounds and smells, the anecdotes and tales, to the purest essence of motorcycling.

Combat Aircraft TEXT BY PAOLO MATRICARDI Since its originis a century ago, aviation has reshaped the world. In addition to the progress it has generated, the revolution in transport and communications it has triggered, and the scientific discoveries it has prompted, the airplane has, above alla transformed methods of combat and the structure and organization of armies, tactics and strategies, becoming a decisive element in victories and defeats. This volume examines the evolution of military aircraft, chronicling the developments, inventins, triumphs, failures, and adventures through a compelling text. Photographs contributed by the most prestigious aviation archives in museums and industries, private collections, and military documentation centers complement the text, demonstrating through superb visuals the growth of military aviation. Accurate color plates of the most important aircraft complete the picture of each historical period, and an appendix presents the technical specifications in a series of tables outlining the principal characteristics of each aircraft that has been discussed and depicted. Aviation journalist PAOLO MATRICARDI is a long-time associate of Enzo Angelucci’s, with whom he has collaborated on many projects. He is the author of a history of aviation published in the United States by Military Press.

The History, Life and Art of the Buried City

The opportunity to see the beauty and grandeur of the world’s foremost archaeological sites in their totality, as complete architectural units, is impossible on foot. This spectacular volume records the fabulous journey by a group of renowned specialist photographers, never before made, over the Pyramids of Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East, over the sites where the great Mediterranean civilizations arose, then hovering over the architectural jewels of the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, beholding the complex structure of the historic cities of the Far East, and tracing the sinuous stone snake of the Great Wall of China. 192 pages - 30.5 x 42.5 cm 185 color photographs Hardcover with jacket 978 88 544 0493 9 also available in reduced format: 26 x 36 cm

EDITED BY MARISA RANIERI PANETTA PHOTOGRAPHS BY ARALDO DE LUCA The objective of this book is to bear witness to the importance of Pompeii in the field of archaeology, and to contribute to our body of knowledge about the complex civilization of the Romans. At the same time, it is also an invitation to visit a remarkable site where the past still seems extraordinarily alive. Ancient Egypt Art and Archaeology in the Land of the Pharaohs TEXT BY GIORGIO AGNESE AND MAURIZIO RE One of the most fascinating regions of Africa, the land that saw the rise and fall of the longest and most enigmatic of the Mediterranean civilizations, Egypt is full of landscapes of breathtaking beauty and artistic masterpieces, from the pyramids of Giza to the Valley of the Kings, from the Temple of Philae to Abu Simbel. Thrilling images combined with original text describe the myriad facets of a colorful and surprising land which the Ancients appropriately called “The Red and the Black, evoking the sharp contrast between the red of the scorching desert wastes and the black silt left by the flooding Nile. Within the pages of this book is an enthralling journey through a country with enduring appeal, savoring the complexity, mystery, and formidable wealth of the land of the pharaohs. GIORGIO AGNESE, a member of the Egypt Exploration Society of London, is also the director of the Genoese Archaeological Group. His research is oriented towards the historical-chronological reconstruction of the Old Kingdom and the Predynastic period with the help of the most recent archaeological discoveries. MAURIZIO RE has been a photographer and freelance researcher in the field of Egyptology since 1985. He is a member of both the Egypt Exploration Society and Astene, a global cultural organization based in Oxford (England) which deals with the study of the 19th century exploration of Egypt and the Middle East.

The Realm of the Pharaohs

Treasures, mysteries and new discoveries in Egypt

TEXT BY ZAHI HAWASS

This volume is a comprehensive and authoritative presentation of the most recent archaeological findings on the Egyptian Pyramids. Illustrated with stunning photographs, maps, plans and reconstructions, the book gathers texts by the world’s preeminent Egyptologists that throw new light on the secrets of the numinous, architecturally magnificent monuments. The book takes readers on a journey of discovery that unveils intriguing insights into the ever-mysterious nexus between heaven and earth for the ancients on the banks of the Nile.

“If you could spend a day at the Giza Pyramids, you would watch the sun rise over the Eastern Desert and see its light caressthe face ofthe Sphinx... Just this one day would convince you that the allure and mystery of ancient Egypt are still alive.” This is how Zhai Hawass, one of the world’s greatest Egyptologists, introduced his journey along the Nile to discover and explore the thousand of years of the civilizations of the pharaos. With pictures by the most prestigious international photographers and charts and explanatory drawings to clarify and supplement text, Hawass eloquently introduced readers to the treasures of ancient Egypt.

The art of Pompeii

PREFACE BY ZAHI HAWASS, TEXT BY GIORGIO FERRERO PHOTOGRAPHS BY ARALDO DE LUCA

PHOTOGRAPHS BY ARALDO DE LUCA TEXT BY ANTONELLA MAGAGNINI

Thanks to its large format, this magnificently illustrated book shows portraits and monuments that are considered to be artistic masterpieces of antiquity in a new light. It traces the profiles of several sovereigns, presenting an accurate and indepth picture of the history and art of Ancient Egypt and its undisputed protagonists: the Pharaohs. “King of Upper and Lower Egypt,” “Lord of the Two Lands,” and “Son of Ra,” are some of the titles held by the sovereigns who ruled over one of the richest and most powerful states of antiquity for more than 3,000 years. The history of Ancient Egypt through the millennia is marked by a succession of sovereigns and dynasties.

The catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 freeze-framing a ripe moment in time - bestowed upon posterity an incalculable heritage of art and knowledge in the miraculously well-preserved remains of the city of Pompeii. This volume of lush color images taken by renowned photographer Araldo De Luca, takes readers inside the houses and into the secrets of one of the most charming sites of classical antiquity. Accompanying the photos, which are presented in a distinguished oversized format, are accessible texts that elucidate the daily life, the mythic and heroic imagination, and the religious customs and beliefs of the ancient Romans.

Wonders of the World

TEXT BY LUCIA GASPARINI AND SERENA MARABELLI

TEXT BY FRANCESCO BOCCIA

This authoritative volume traces more than two thousand years of timeless masterpieces that have become universal symbols of the genius of humankind, from the mask of Tutankhamun to “The Scream” by Edward Munch. Organized chronologically, each work of art is presented through a meticulously researched text that analyzes the techniques employed by the artist and places each art work in its historical context. Throughout the book, fine quality photographs from the archives of the world’s foremost museums reveal the mastery of each artist through pictures that depict each work in its entirety as well as details that are discussed in the text.

Organized chronologically, Wonders of the World starts with the pyramids at Giza which were built in 2560 BC and ends with the Experience Music Project in Seattle, a museum of rock and roll memorabilia and technology-intensive multimedia displays designed by Frank Gehry and built in 2000. Among the countless other buildings featured in this book are The Parthenon in Athens, Angkor Thom in Siem Reap, Cambodia, The Taj Mahal in India, The Capitol of the United States in Washington, DC, The Opera House of Sydney, and The Sagrada Família, in Barcelona.

Berlin A city for the future PREFACE BY WALTER MOMPER TEXT BY KLAUS HARTUNG This volume is a richly illustrated tribute to a city that, more than any other world capital, has succeeded in renewing and re-inventing itself, representing the cutting edge in many fields. It reveals the history, the buildings, the cultural life, and the contradictions of a city that is full of contrasts and destined for continual evolution. Since that fateful day in 1989, with the fall of the wall that had split the city’s heart in two during the long, painful years of the Cold War, Berlin has become a crossroads between Eastern Europe and the West, where the most varied and avant-garde cultural tendencies meet. Reborn like a phoenix from the ashes of the Second World War, the capital city of a re-unified Germany has been engaged in a colossal and momentous rebuilding process that has transformed it into a modern city center with a thousand faces, a laboratory in constant evolution. Documenting each phase of the city’s development, this book provides a historical reference for understanding the cycle of destruction and reconstruction that Berlin has undergone, while the magnificent photographs bring to life a fascinating gallery of perspectives and views of the principal architectural masterpieces. This book is a tribute to the spirit of our time but also a journey into the past to relive the emotions and memories between progress and nostalgia. WALTER MOMPER, a German politician, was Mayor of West Berlin in 1989. He was President of the Bundesrat from 1989 to 1990, and since 2001 he has been President of the Chamber of Deputies in Berlin. KLAUS HARTUNG was born in the former East Germany. In 1980, he started working in Berlin as an advertising consultant and journalist. Subsequently, he became editor of the Wochenpost, a widely read newspaper in East Berlin, for which he published articles on politics, social reforms, and contemporary art and on the re-unification of Germany.

27.5 x 30.5 cm Hardcover with jacket The series is also available in reduced format: 22.3 x 24.7 cm

Brazil is a surprising alternation of contradictory elements, light and shadow, breathtaking spectacles and majestic scenery next to glimpses of intimate beauty. A land that is now looking fully to the future, with the 2014 FIFA World Cup acting as a driving force for the economy. The 2016 Olympic Games, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, will also be a not-to-bemissed opportunity for the country’s progress and growth. Through this detailed historical introduction, which sheds light on the key events in the development of this great country, where there seems to be a place for everything and everyone, a complex interweaving emerges, where the past, present and future magically coexist.

JOHN PAUL II

The Pope Who Changed the World Photographs by Gianni Giansanti Text by Valentina Alazraki 176 pages - 26 x 30 cm 111 color photographs Softcover with flaps 978 88 544 0103 7

Gianni Giansanti, who has covered the Vatican for 20 years, photographed John Paul II and Benedict XVI during many public and private occasions. He has created fascinating reports that use the language of photography – an extraordinary instrument that has grasped the expressions and feelings of the two popes – to paint uncommon portraits of these two important figures. The books examine memoirs, new reports, and pictures of their public and private life to show the official face as well as the private and human side of these great pontiffs. What clearly emerges is the multifaceted figure of John Paul II, a charismatic Christian leader who powerfully shaped the last decades of the 20th century, and a truthful portrait of Benedict XVI, ‘the German pope’, with, above all, his extraordinary love of life.

The dawn of a new papacy Photographs by Gianni Giansanti Text by Jeff Israely 176 pages - 28 x 32.5 cm 160 color photographs Hardcover with jacket 978 88 544 0162 4

GIANNI GIANSANTI began his career as a freelance photographer in Italy in 1978. He provided exclusive coverage for important events in Italian history and won many international prizes for his reporting. His photo essays often became bestsellers; among the most successful were John Paul II - The Great and John Paul II - The Pope Who Changed the World and Benedict XVI - The dawn of a new papacy, published by White Star Publishers. In 2009, Giansanti also created an exhibit called “Twenty Italians Who Are Changing Italy.” This photographic retrospective, presented in Florence at Palazzo Strozzi, was a great public and critical success.

Cubebook This innovative series of volumes offers an original, almost three-dimensional, way of experiencing images. Photographs and authored texts come together in a “cube”, at the same time an independent and modern object of design. Each volume is divided into individual chapters, preceded by an introduction, that cover the subject of the book, logically ordered in such a way as to present the historical, biological, anthropological and artistic implications of the volume’s topic.

THE BRIDE’S ALBUM An organizer, journal and keepsake for planning and remembering the wedding

24 x 26 cm 112 pages Hardcover with wire-o 978 88 544 0782 4

The start of our journey together

Useful addresses

The start of our journey together Useful addresses

Every bride wants her proverbial “best day” to be simply perfect: to achieve this objective, she cuts out and saves images of bouquets, consults friends about makeup and hairstyle, she calls on her loved ones about the choice of suitable place and the dream gown, she tests menus and makes up wedding lists. To organize such an important day and such a complex celebration, she also needs to be informed about the necessary documentation, to collect telephone numbers and appointment dates, to have always on hand the list of guests and that of the participants, for any last-minute modifications. As the fateful day draws near, the excitement can undermine anyone’s organization no matter how perfect, and make it necessary to have a little help to carry out every aspect of the day. This album is the ideal tool to accompany the future bride step-by-step in the planning of each detail of her wedding: the division into thematic chapters allows her to mark and quickly and easily find all the contacts and all necessary information. At the same time, the useful pockets offer space for storing documents, the sources of inspiration to keep in mind, or the list of guests to be updated from time to time. Practical envelopes make it easy to conserve CDs with videos, music, and images. Lastly, there is the final chapter, to be completed after the ceremony, which transforms the volume into a veritable memory album, allowing every couple to retrace the first steps of their new journey.

My Family Album Old black-and-white photographs showing our parents young and carefree on the day of their wedding, the cake recipe that grandmother prepared for breakfast and that even today is our children’s favorite, the story of great-uncle’s journey across the ocean, by now a legend to tell the grandchildren: every family has memories handed down from generation to generation, that constitute our roots, explain who we are, and remind us where we come from. Making sure that no document gets lost and that each important memory can be handed down means handing over to future generations a priceless heritage of anecdotes, stories, pictures, and documents. This album is the perfect tool for collecting and preserving all the warm memories from the past, from traditions during the celebrations to the particular family vocabulary, from grandmother’s old remedies to the anecdotes about picturesque characters. The division into thematic chapters allows you to organize and carefully write down the memories and anecdotes and to easily find them again. The space reserved for images allows you to store old photographs so that they cannot become ruined. The pockets and envelopes for CDs allow you to collect documents and videos. The pages dedicated to genealogical trees, lastly, help trace the family memory with ease. The outcome of this work will be a lively and fascinating volume: fully customized and ready to become a gift for oneself and for future generations.

Pinocchio INSPIRED BY THE MASTERPIECE BY CARLO COLLODI ILLUSTRATED BY MANUELA ADREANI Carlo Collodi’s masterpiece Pinocchio is the most widely read fairytale, beloved by children around the world. The adventures of the disobedient puppet with a heart of gold who dreams of becoming a real boy has entered into the collective imagination, as have many other characters born from the pen and genius of the Tuscan author: the Talking Cricket, the Cat, the Fox, the Blue Fairy, and the dreaded Mangiafuoco. The imaginative and ingenious narrative inventions have inspired films and short features, songs and musicals, and personalities of the caliber of Salvador Dalí. This volume, proposing an adaptation of the original text, is enriched with the splendid illustrations of Manuela Adreani, an artist of rare sensitivity, capable of capturing and elegantly transmitting all the magic and poetry of a story that has become a timeless classic. Alice in Wonderland INSPIRED BY THE MASTERPIECE BY LEWIS CARROLL ILLUSTRATED BY MANUELA ADREANI In Wonderland space and time are non-existent variables where the laws of physics are replaced by those of fantasy and chaos, which are undeniably more interesting and entertaining for the young protagonist of Lewis Carroll’s masterpiece. By following the White Rabbit running past her, Alice falls into a rabbit hole, which turns out to be the entrance to an extraordinary world where the rigid mores of Victorian education are defied by such ingenious and non-conformist characters as the Hatter, the Queen of Hearts and the Cheshire Cat. The humorous and grotesque situations Alice finds herself in are described by the author through the curious and irreverent eyes of little Alice, of whom the author is an accomplice and not a judge. This volume, an adaptation of the original, is enhanced by the splendid illustrations of Manuela Adreani, an artist of exceptional sensibility who captures with elegance all the magic of a story that is a timeless classic of literature. What sound does it make? The Animal Memory Game ILLUSTRATED BY MARISA VESTITA What sound does the owl make? And the ostrich? Discovering this is a game. You need only match each animal with its cry by combining the 62 tiles of the Memory Game, the purpose of which is to teach children by entertaining them. The game is accompanied by a book with riddles and other curiosities that provide information on the animals presented in the Memory Game. Marisa Vestita’s colored and humorous illustrations, which lead the children through the game and the book, are also the leading characters in a brightly colored poster. MARISA VESTITA was born in Taranto in 1975. She studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Lecce and at the same time she did internships in comics, stage design and stage-craft . Always curious about everything regarding the world of images, in 2002 she moved to Milan where she received her first commissions as an illustrator. She is very interested in applying computer technology to art and completed a course in digital graphic design (using Mac) at the European Institute of Design. She shows in major exhibitions throughout Italy. To date, she collaborated with Giunti Editore, Baldini & Castoldi, Dalai Editore and with the magazines Gioia, Psychologies, Linus, Grazia and Natural Style.
