52 DREAM WEEKENDS Text by Cinzia Rando and elena luraghi 352 pages - 21 x 27.8 cm 442 color photographs Softcover with flaps

52 destinations in Europe’s most spectacular cities and regions. 52 ideas for passing a weekend “out of doors” in the historical, geographical, and artistic heart of the Old Continent. Evocative photographs, detailed maps made expressly for this work, accurate texts with suggestions and curiosities, lead the reader to discover time after time the extraordinary and variegated mosaic of cities and landscapes, where art and nature have assumed their fascinating diversity over the course of the centuries that no homogenization can never cancel out. Getting away, after all, is simple: all you need are two or three free days and a destination. For example, Barcelona, Paris, London, Athens, Istanbul, St. Petersburg, or Amsterdam, Europe’s most sparkling city. But also Brittany’s lighthouses, Switzerland’s glaciers, Ludwig’s romantic castles in Bavaria, or the fertile lands of Champagne, where the world’s most famous bubbles are born. By air, by car, by train, by ship, on foot, on horseback, on bicycle, or – why not – even on a sled. For a cultural, sportive, naturalistic, thermal, or ecogastronomic sojourn; to get to know the forms, flavors, colors, music and museums, architecture and traditions, civilizations and cultures, of the countries that make up the continent of Europe. A versatile and exhaustive guide, rich in detailed information about where to go, what to see, the best hotels and restaurants, shopping and stops for gourmands, well-being, excursions, and nightlife. Making the volume even richer and more interesting are the high-quality photographic images and the tailor-made maps. CINZIA RANDO was born in 1959 and has worked in publishing for the tourist sector for a quarter of a century. She has published texts in various titles in Touring Club Italiano’s Guide Verdi d’Italia e d’Europa series, in the Dove guides published as inserts to the Corriere della Sera, and in Touring Club Italiano’s Guide Rosse available at newsstands with the daily La Repubblica. For Touring Club Italiano she has planned and edited various illustrated books and a series of guides for children dedicated to the great museums of Italy, for which the first volume, Oggi scopro il Museo Galileo di Firenze, has already come out. She has collaborated with the magazines Tuttoturismo, Weekend Viaggi, Bell’Italia, Bell’Europa, Neos, and Storica of National Geographic, for which she is currently editor for the column I percorsi di Storica. After graduating in Architecture, ELENA LURAGHI began to write for women’s magazines, Architecture magazines and the major Design and Travel publications. She is a professional journalist, and writes in the Corriere della Sera Style-magazine, Marie Claire and In Viaggio. In addition, she is the author of a number of reportages in Italy and abroad for the newspaper Il Giornale. She has worked for web-magazines such as Mondadori.com and ViaMichelin. She coordinated the Guide di Dove for Corriere della Sera, and for some years now, she has been in charge of the in-flight magazine for Neos, the airline. She is the author of Yemen, that is part of the Grandangolo series, for White Star Publishers.

52 Dream Week-Trips Around the world TEXT BY ETTORE PETTINAROLI

52 DREAM WEEK-TRIPS Around the world 352 pages - 21 x 27.8 cm 450 color photographs Softcover with flaps

52 dream journeys is not a list of exotic destinations. This is because dreams are not governed by rules or criteria that apply to everybody in the same way (each one of us has the right to “dream his own dreams”) and also because journeys are experiences that emerge from our innermost feelings, from our emotions, expectations and possibilities (financial, free time, family), interwoven with the individual characteristics of each one of us. 52 journeys is a tool to help us to choose our “dream journey.” There are cities and metropolises, there are itineraries for a journey seeped in Nature, History or Art that embrace the most beautiful and most famous places of the five continents, ranging from European capitals to the deserts of Tunisia and Jordan, from the Silk Road to the beaches of Bali and Java, from the seabeds of the Red Sea and Queensland to the American myth of the “Gambling City.” After letting us dream for a while, and bearing in mind the question of time (each journey lasts around a week), the guide provides plenty of practical information: where to go, what to see, the best hotels and restaurants, where to shop and where to find the best food, well-being centers, excursions, nightlife ... all fully documented with highquality photographs and custom maps. ETTORE PETTINAROLI was born in Milan and has been a professional journalist since 1990. He has worked for travel and tourism magazines for the last 21 years, reporting and conducting surveys in addition to his editorial work. Currently he is a freelance journalist, working mainly in the fields of tourism and the outdoors. He writes for some of the major Italian monthly publications that specialize in these fields and for various wide-distribution weeklies.

Pop Art TEXT BY MARTINA ANGELOTTI, WITH VALENTINA CIUFFI AND VERONICA LENZA A pop-tastically compact compendium of art’s most fabulous and irreverent movement For students of modern art, advertising, and design, this compact overview of Pop Art gathers nearly 200 full-color reproductions of its masterpieces with newly commissioned texts that trace the history of the iconoclastic movement from its origins in the U.K. through its explosion in the U.S. and subsequent European incarnations. Readers are shown how “Popular Art” brought about a jarring break from earlier artistic traditions, as the new power of technical reproduction stripped away their qualities of unrepeatable uniqueness. Featuring a special introductory chapter on Andy Warhol, the genre’s most infamous figure, and brief biographies of each artist represented, the book shows how Pop Art objectified mass-produced imagery from the new media of advertising, Hollywood movies, television, comic strips, and popular literature, deftly and often hilariously breaching the gulf between high and low art. MARTINA ANGELOTTI is an independent editor and a freelance contributor to several contemporary art magazines and Websites. Additionally, she directs the master’s program for Design of Cultural Events, Performing Arts and New Creativity at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan. Lingerie

TEXT BY DESIGN.DOC

From the crinoline to thigh highs, and from the corset to the G-string you can choose to conceal or to reveal, the important thing is to be liked and to like yourself. In this book, the history of lingerie is seen both for its elegance and from an ironic angle. Starting from the first bodices and corsets which were true instruments of constriction hidden under layers of crinolines, we come to the glittering and theatrical display of lingerie on the catwalks of the most recent fashion shows of Victoria’s Secret.

Since the 1930s, the “Made in Italy” label has been synonymous with design excellence, the very definition of style, beauty, sensuality, and whimsicality. This volume is a museum galley of Italy’s greatest designs of products for the home, including typewriters, lamps, sofas and chairs, kitchen appliances, salt and pepper services, ashtrays, and more. Over 200 photographs of classic objects by the nation’s top designers are featured with texts that describe the context of their origins and influences from around the world. 272 pages - 22.2 X 28.8 cm 165 color photographs, Flexibound with flaps and jacket 978 88 544 0584 4

These women helped revolutionize the concept of femininity and, through their personalities and the events in their private lives, featured prominently in the media for years. Stories of unforgettable lives and intimate portraits are celebrated in a book without precedent. ANNA MOLINARI was born and started to work in Carpi where she still lives and works. Rolling Stones 50 Years of Rock EDITED BY VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS TEXT BY HOWARD KRAMER For much of their 50 years, the Rolling Stones have actually lived up to the hyped-up moniker “greatest rock and roll band in the world,” a feat as remarkable as their longevity under the pressures of intense fame, endless touring, substance abuse, death threats, and extreme brushes with the law. The series of essays in this book highlights their key artistic achievements, including significant singles, landmark albums, and spectacular tours. Under a variety of guises – bad boys, jet-setters, exiles, junkies, old guard, and the team to beat – the Stones have faced every obstacle, selfmade or not, and always delivered. VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS is an expert in photographic editing and image creation and has also written the texts of numerous photographic volumes. In 1984, together with Marcello Bertinetti, she founded Edizioni White Star where she took on the position of Editorial Director. HOWARD KRAMER has been the curatorial director at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, since 1996. A cohost on VH1 Rock Collectors, he has contributed to Rolling Stone, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, The Cambridge Companion to the Beatles, and a forthcoming Bruce Springsteen compendium.

HEAVY METAL From Hard Rock to Extreme Metal Text by Kory Grow 272 pages - 26 x 30 cm 236 color photographs Hardcover

This book is dedicated to Metal, a genre of rock music with aggressive rhythms, powerful sounds and, at times, disturbing themes. It features an in depth reconstruction of the genre’s origins and development, including all the major genres and sub-genres. An important part of the book is dedicated to Hard Rock, from which Metal derives. Indeed, it is not possible to speak of Metal without mentioning its roots, which lie in the classic Hard Rock of bands that made music history, bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. With exclusive pictures and the contribution of experts in the field, this book analyzes the development of these and other Hard Rock groups that played a significant role in the evolution of Metal through their sounds, lyrics, themes, and the trends they set. Specific sections are dedicated to the various types of Metal - Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Nu-Metal, Power Metal, Death Metal and Black Metal. Minor movements and sub-genres of Metal are also discussed, to help readers understand the vastness of the whole spectrum of this musical genre. Particularly captivating graphics, designs, lettering and colors specifically designed to differentiate the various stages of this complex evolution, allow us to distinguish, at a glance, the various themes and appreciate, even at an aesthetic level, the unfolding of a development marked by recognizable milestones and unique atmospheres. KORY GROW is the senior editor of Revolver magazine, the United States’ largest magazine covering hard rock and heavy metal. In his career, he’s interviewed artists ranging from Metallica to Ozzy Osbourne to Avenged Sevenfold to Darkthrone. This elegant volume is a portrait gallery of 50 eminent legends spanning jazz history, from Jelly Roll Morton, perhaps the inventor of the art form, to contemporary axman Joe Lovano, who contributes a foreword. Legends of Rock

Masters of Rock Guitar

The artists, instruments, myths and 50 years of youth music

FOREWORD BY JOE SATRIANI, PREFACE BY ADRIAN BELEW TEXT BY ERNESTO ASSANTE

This spectacular celebration of rock-and-roll recounts the stories and the cities, instruments, fashions, and personalities that have made this music great. Organized chronologically, this volume spotlights such pioneers as Elvis Presley, beloved storytellers like Bob Dylan, classic favorites including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and The Who, punk rockers like Patti Smith and the Sex Pistols, grunge rockers including Nirvana and Pearl Jam, as well as icons Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, and many more. Portraits and vibrant pictures of the performers in concert as well as images of the greatest albums of all time supplement the entertaining text.

The guitar has always been a protagonist of extraordinary pages of jazz history, it was the queen of folk and blues, and in its electric embodiment, it was the basic stone of rock’n’roll. We want to celebrate the electric guitar myth and legend, the extraordinary instrument that turned into a key to open the doors of sensation, creativity and of life itself. Lots of figures have contributed to this history: legendary musicians as Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Brian May, Eric Clapton, Santana, Ben Harper, Jimi Hendrix. This volume is a handsomely illustrated tribute to the instruments that have earned these guitarists their reputations as some of the greatest musicians of all time, this volume will strike a chord with music enthusiasts of all ages.

More Than Just a Kiss The greatest love movies TEXT BY ROBERT MARICH

MORE THAN JUST A KISS The greatest love movies Text by Robert Marich 288 pages - 26 x 30 cm 186 color photographs Hardcover with jacket 978 88 544 0572 1

More Than Just a Kiss presents a collection of the greatest love movies, etched in the public’s mind for their romantic stories featuring famous actors, framed in epic surroundings, and delivering memorable words. Fifty memorable films, from the black and white era to today, are handsomely presented and analyzed in words and pictures. The book explains their enduring appeal, provides entertaining insight on the talent that made them, and points out little known but fascinating bits of their history. The sophisticated atmosphere of English Patient, elegiac style of Out of Africa, and pageantry of Shakespeare in Love. The book has plenty of star power provided by Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Tom Cruise, Meg Ryan, Richard Gere, Hugh Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart and others. And then there are the words that inspire the romance! From When Harry Met Sally…, the Meg Ryan character captures the sad plight of wounded hearts on the rebound with “The first date back is always the toughest, Harry.” And a non-sensual phrase from Casablanca somehow resonates forever with moviegoers as a romantic/tragic farewell in “Here’s looking at you kid.” Film journalist/analyst ROBERT MARICH, who authored the book Marketing to Moviegoers, has a quarter century experience writing about film and media. His article have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Variety, Hollywood Reporter and London-based Screen International. Marich recently finished editing and revising the latest edition of a college textbook about the music industry. Now based in the New York City area, he has covered film while living in Los Angeles, London and New York.

Hero Dogs TEXT BY RONALD L. AIELLO AND LANCE M. BACON From the Battle of Marathon during the Persian invasion of Greece to the May 2, 2011 mission that killed Osama bin Laden, War Dogs have served alongside the most valiant warriors in history’s most decisive battles. Today, War Dogs are a primary asset when locating improvised explosive devices. They are members of Special Operations teams conducting clandestine missions, and they help guard some of the world’s most dangerous terrorists. This photographic book opens with a salute to the history of combat canines of the past century. It then uses unprecedented illustration and insight to take the reader inside the careful selection process and months of rigorous training required to join the ranks of these elite “military working dogs.” In-depth interviews and hundreds of never-before-seen photos reveal the lifelong bonds formed in the heat of battle as tales of selfless service in Iraq and Afghanistan are told by the War Dog handlers and commanders who were there. Many of these War Dogs have earned recognition for their heroic actions. Hundreds struggle with wounds and post-traumatic stress. Dozens died in the line of duty. These are their stories. RONALD L. AIELLO had the honor of serving with the First Marine Scout Dog Platoon. In the year 2000, Ron and four other Vietnam Veteran dog handlers formed The United States War Dogs Association, Inc. which is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting the long history of the military service dogs and establishing permanent war dog memorials. LANCE M. BACON is senior staff writer for Army Times, an independent weekly newspaper serving U.S. Army personnel and their families. He covers Army leadership, weaponry, training and tactics. Bacon has served as city/military editor of the Jacksonville (N.C.) Daily News and managing editor of the Kinston (N.C.) Free Press.

48 Reasons why my dog steals my underwear!

48 Reasons why babies and puppies are alike!

TEXT BY JULI-ANN CIALONE

TEXT BY JULI-ANN CIALONE

Many people have asked me how I came up with the concept for this book. Well, to be honest, it is completely the fault of my puggle dog named P. Diddy. One day I walked into my bedroom to see my sweet dog happily atop my bed wagging his tail with my brand new super-expensive underwear wrapped around his snout. Of course he had joyfully ripped it to shreds. I looked at him and with exasperation asked, “WHY???!!!!”. So I began thinking... what would he tell me if he were to answer? And then the excuses began to flow!

After many years of photographing people and pets of all ages, I happened to notice that in particular babies and puppies create about the same level of difficulty when I photograph them. During the sessions, the same tricks work to get their attention: squeaky toys, food bribes, fake coughing, sneezing, clapping and spitting, and of course embarrassing myself by making weird high-pitched noises, barks and squeals. But the end result is always breathtaking – beautiful, bright eyes and stunning expressions from these tiny inquisitive creatures!

JULI-ANN CIALONE is an internationally acclaimed photographer based in New York, U.S.A., known for her images featuring both people and pets. She has received some of the photography industry’s highest awards – including Master Craftsman, Kodak and Fuji Gallery Awards and PPA International Diamond Photographer of the Year. In 2004, she established the Images to Inspire Program, giving families of potentially terminally ill children free photography sessions, prints and albums. Juli, who only began competing professionally in 2005, has won PPA International Photographer of the Year every year (both in the U.S.A. and in Europe) for her many portraits, photojournalism and albums.

Mutt’s Life! PHOTOGRAPHS BY FABIO PETRONI Contrary to popular opinion, multi-breed dogs are neither less attractive nor less intelligent or virtuous than their purebred brethren that compete in best-in shows and boast noble pedigrees. As exotic, beautiful, and unique as any pairing of two discrete sets of genes can produce, mutts are as capable of great outbursts of affection and heroism, providing wonderful companionship, and striking as hammy or statuesque a pose as any canine. In this book, portrait and still-life master Fabio Petroni portrays the true essence of mongrels with precision and sensitivity. His photographs of lovable hounds have strong emotional impact and artistic panache. FABIO PETRONI has been a professional photographer since 1984. With a speciality in portraits and still life, his work is featured in advertising campaigns for well-known national and international brands. He is the official photographer of the International Jumping Riders Club and the author of White Star’s Horses, Master Portraits.

Horses Master portraits PHOTOGRAPHS BY FABIO PETRONI FOREWORD BY OLIVIERO TOSCANI PREFACE BY MEREDITH MICHAELS-BEERBAUM The history of horses is tightly interwoven with that of humanity, which owes its equine friends a great deal, from fieldwork to transport, from traveling and discovering to sports. This volume is a tribute to mankind’s tireless companion. Clever use of light, which comes from Petroni’s long experience as a still life and portrait photographer, has enabled him to create original images, with a style that is somewhat unusual for animal photographs—a style that is spectacularly enhanced thanks to the book’s large format. The thing that, above all, has enabled the photographer to communicate so directly the true essence of these magnificent quadrupeds is undoubtedly his emotional closeness to his models, the result of love and knowledge developed over so many years. Here, in front of the camera, are smart, timid, aggressive, proud, indolent, protective, curious, and gentle horses, in an explosion of emotions. FABIO PETRONI lives and works in Milan. After studying photography, he turned professional in 1984, since then he has worked with some of the most famous names in international photography. He works with some of the top advertising agencies and has been involved in campaigns for well known national and international brands. His particular focus is on portraits and still life, areas in which he has demonstrated his intuitive and rigorous style. He is the official photographer of the IJRC (International Jumping Riders Club), and is responsible for the public image of major international horse-riding. OLIVIERO TOSCANI is known as the creative force behind the world's most famous newspapers and brands, and as a conceiver of successful corporate images and publicity campaigns. The recipient of prestigious international awards and recognition, he is Accademico d’Onore at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence. He lives in Tuscany, where he produces olive oil and wine and raises horses. MEREDITH MICHAELS-BEERBAUM is a German horse riding champion. She has been devoted to show jumping since she was a young girl, and has become one of the most successful athletes at both European and international levels. Horses Their temperament and elegance in the photographs of Gabrielle Boiselle PHOTOGRAPHS BY BY GABRIELLE BOISELLE TEXT BY AGNÈS GALLETIER Gabrielle Boiselle nurtures a passionate love for horses, which she photographs with unrelieved ardor. Her pictures are never trite, but capture the very soul of these extraordinarily sensitive creatures that exude a powerful and untamed energy and unrivaled grace and nobility. The reader joins the author-photographer in the supremely rewarding but always challenging attempt to capture on film the poetry and beauty that horses radiate, as well as the deep emotions they convey. 80 Islands to escape to... ... and live happily ever after TEXT BY JASMINA TRIFONI True as it may be, as the poet John Donne said, that "No man is an island", it is equally true that for Man, an island - in the philosophical sense, as well as the geographical sense - symbolizes the ultimate escape destination for a dream vacation or the dream of a lifetime on holiday, far away from everything and everybody. The book, 80 Dream Islands indulges this innate desire in all of us. The islands selected from the five continents, have a common denominator: the beauty of the sea, a mild climate and the fact that together they offer a variety of landscapes, cultures and sensations that can satisfy any desire. From the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, via the Caribbean, this "inventory for dreamers," features in words and stunning images, famous locations renowned for their luxury and worldliness and secret hideaways to live like Robinson Crusoe even in the twentyfirst century, places that are rich in history and others where the only distraction is the music of Nature. In short, a book that is an irresistible invitation to travel. Even if it is just with your imagination.

JASMINA TRIFONI was born in 1966 and graduated in Political Sciences at the University of Padua. She is a journalist specialized in the sphere of tourism. For ten years she worked in the editing department of Meridiani. She now works as a freelance journalist and contributes to the major Italian magazines in the field. Together with Marco Cattaneo, she is the author of Afghanistan: le donne, la guerra, l’Islam (2001), published by Emergency. She has also written the three volumes on - I Tesori dell’Arte (2002), I Santuari della Natura (2003) and Antiche Civiltà (2004) - from the Unesco World Heritage List as well as Città del Mondo (2005), all published by White Star Publishers. She is a traveler both by profession and by vocation and has gained considerable ethnic and cultural experience, particularly in India, the countries of Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

PREFACE BY GIACOMO AGOSTINI, TEXT BY LUIGI CORBETTA

Legendary models of history and innovation

A superbly illustrated chronicle of the most influential and innovative motorcycle models from the past 100 years.

TEXT BY SAVERIO VILLA

Packed with archival and specially commissioned photographs, this stunning volume chronicles the evolution of the motorcycle, from early 1910's until today, documenting the major milestones in this illustrious history and spotlighting the most influential models that have emerged over the last century. Among the manufacturers whose bikes are represented are BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Moto Guzzi, Suzuki, Triumph, Yamaha, and many more, all showcased in hundreds of brilliant color photographs. Accompanying the extraordinary photographs are the stories behind the vehicles, with a wealth of technical information about each motorcycle.

Many cars have simply traveled on the road. Some models, on the other hand, have contributed to the history of fourwheeled transportation. An innovative and captivating line, an original design, the introduction of new elements, and the verve to ride in fashionable and trendy cars are the ingredients that led to the success of these legendary vehicles. They were sold in the millions, produced and re-produced for decades, and restyled or elevated to the role of a status symbol. These cars have now become an integral part of our motorized world. This book, enriched with splendid photographs of the cars and featuring exclusive period pictures, follows the history, evolution and success of car models that have left their mark on the pavement.

The Ecological House Sustainable Architecture around the World TEXT BY MARCO MORO AND BEATRICE SPIRANDELLI When people say “ecological house,” they can be referring to any one of an infinite number of project plans destined to produce the least predictable outcomes you could possibly imagine. Ecological architecture measures itself with and adapts, above all, to the place – whether the context is urban, suburban, rural, or natural – with its environmental features, landscape, available resources, culture, and characteristic social and economic dynamics. If one were simply to call it “conscious architecture,” one could not go wrong. This volume’s objective is to illustrate some of the most prominent tendencies and lines of research that have emerged, and to introduce some of their advocates – pioneers, masters, or budding youth – through a broad review of projects dedicated to the most widespread way of living in the world: the individual or single-family home. But sustainability in architecture does not refer only to individual homes that are immersed, ideally, in verdure. Accordingly, one section of the book is dedicated to illustrating the best realizations of ecological buildings for a wide variety of uses. Ecological architecture has a new, polycentric geography, where ideas diffuse and develop in a multidirectional manner. Planners from every part of the world, of every age and background, have succeeded in distilling the poetics of living in harmony with the environment. Together they present a fascinating panorama of “architectural biodiversity.” MARCO MORO architect, was born in Padua in 1961 and lives and works in Milan. After collaborating with a number of different professional studios, including Angelo Mangiarotti’s studio in Milan, he became involved in communications and publishing. Since 1997 he has been editor-in-chief of L’architettura naturale, Europe’s first magazine dedicated exclusively to sustainable architectural projects. He has also been a member of the directive committee of ANAB (National Association for Bioecological Architecture) as well as its communications manager. He heads the editorial section for Edizioni Ambiente, a Milanese publishing house specializing in environmental themes and sustainable development. BEATRICE SPIRANDELLI was born in Badia Polesine, and she now lives and works in Milan as a freelance architect. She deals primarily with planning and consultation in sectors relating to sustainable architecture. She is an expert in landscape-environmental conservation and collaborates actively with the ANAB in training activities, particularly in organizing study travels. She freelances for numerous enterprises in the sector.

Archaeology from Above TEXT BY MARILIA ALBANESE, DAVIDE DOMENICI, GIORGIO FERRERO AND STEFANO MAGGI The first book to portray the world's foremost archaeological sites exclusively from the air. The opportunity to see the beauty and grandeur of the world's foremost archaeological sites in their totality, as complete architectural units, is impossible on foot. From above, whether in a plane, helicopter or hot-air balloon, the entrenched fields seem to breathe new life, the cities recover the largeness of their dimensions, and the thermal baths and theaters seem ready to host their patrons again. This spectacular volume records the fabulous journey by a group of renowned specialist photographers, never before made, over the Pyramids of Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East, over the sites where the great Mediterranean civiliza?tions arose, then hovering over the architectural jewels of the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, beholding the complex struc?ture of the historic cities of the Far East, and tracing the sinuous stone snake of the Great Wall of China. MARILIA ALBANESE is Director of the Italian Institute for Africa and the Orient and the Education Coordinator at the Civic School of Oriental Cultures and Languages in Milan. She is the author of several books including the recent Siddhartha - The Prince who became Buddha. DAVIDE DOMENICI is an archaeologist specializing in Mesoamerica. He has participated in excavations in Peru, Chile, and Mexico, and has headed up the Rio La Venta archaeological project in Chiapas. He is currently on the faculty of Paleography and Medieval Studies at the University of Bologna. STEFANO MAGGI is Professor of Archaeology in the Roman Provinces, Department of Sciences of Antiquity, at the University of Pavia. He specializes in the development of city-planning and architecture in the ancient world. His publications include a book on the layout of the forums in the cities of the Roman Cisalpine Republic, a monograph on the Roman amphitheaters of northern Italy, and various essays on the theaters and amphitheaters of the Roman world. GIORGIO FERRERO, after obtaining a degree in Egyptology with a study on Ancient Nubia, collaborates with Egyptology department of UniversitĂ degli Studi di Milano and with Civiche Raccolte Archeologiche e Numismatiche in Milan. For White Star Publishers he edited several books on archaeological subjects and published Egypt - History and Treasures of an Ancient Civilization.

Great Discoveries in Archaeology The past revealed TEXT BY MARK J. ROSE AND ETI BONN-MULLER What did English archaeologist Howard Carter say and how did he feel when opening the door to Tutankhamun’s tomb for the first time? Which of Homer’s footsteps did the German Heinrich Schliemann follow when making the dreams of every scholar come true by identifying the ruins of Troy? This book, which includes period photographs of the great dig sites and the objects found there, recalls the events surrounding the most important archaeological discoveries of all time, from the sands of Egypt and the forests of Central America to the ancient cities of the Mediterranean and the palaces of the Middle East. This is an enthralling work that accompanies the reader through stories of great archaeologists, and some regular people who, thanks to their intuition, tenacity or good fortune, have revealed some of the great wonders of antiquity to the world.

MARK J. ROSE received his MA and PhD in classical archaeology from Indiana University and specialized in Aegean prehistory. He has studied faunal remains from numerous sites throughout the eastern Mediterranean, including Kommos, Crete; Franchthi Cave, Greece; and Hala Sultan Tekke, Cyprus. He has worked for the Archaeological Institute of America for more than two decades and published on a wide variety of topics, ranging from Predynastic Egypt to the ethics of archaeology and the media. He is currently researching the death of Seqenenre Taa II. He has been the online editorial director of Archaeology magazine and the AIA since 2000. ETI BONN-MULLER received her MA in eastern Mediterranean archaeology from K.U. Leuven, Belgium. Her research subjects on the Bronze Age have included the art of body painting and tattooing in the Aegean, which was the subject of her undergraduate thesis at Harvard University, and a comparison of ivories from Greece, Cyprus, and the Near East. She has participated in excavations at Palaikastro on Crete and Sagalassos in Turkey. After working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she joined the staff of Archaeology magazine, where she has written on the archaeology of China, Crete, Egypt, Germany, and Israel. She is currently the AIA online senior editor.

The Realm of the Pharaohs TEXT BY ZAHI HAWASS

A fascinating survey of the role and status of the female rulers of Egypt documented with hundreds of superb reproductions and graphics, this authoritative volume provides an enthralling exploration of the role and status of the queens of ancient Egypt. “If you could spend a day at the Giza Pyramids, you would watch the sun rise over the Eastern Desert and see its light caressthe face ofthe Sphinx... Just this one day would convince you that the allure and mystery of ancient Egypt are still alive.” This is how Zhai Hawass, one of the world’s greatest Egyptologists, introduced his journey along the Nile to discover and explore the thousand of years of the civilizations of the pharaos. With pictures by the most prestigious international photographers and charts and explanatory drawings to clarify and supplement text, Hawass eloquently introduced readers to the treasures of ancient Egypt.

Egypt and the Holy Land Yesterday and Today Lithographs and diaries by David Roberts R.A. TEXT BY FABIO BOURBON PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANTONIO ATTINI David Roberts (1796-1864) was born in Edinburgh into a very humble family but, thanks to his artistic gifts, he succeeded in becoming one of the most appreciated landscape painters of his time. After traveling in Europe, in 1838 he departed for Egypt and the following year he visited the Sinai Peninsula, Petra, Jerusalem and Palestine, the Lebanese coast and Baalbek. Using the drawings from his travels, the Belgian engraver made splendid lithographs which made him famous. This is a collection of the original plates, published for the first time between 1846 and 1848 accompanied by some excerpts from Roberts's travel diary. In addition, every illustration is accompanied by a photograph which shows the same view as it appears today. As well as offering a sample of Roberts's techniques and taste, this book is an excuse for a journey in time through the artistic treasures and the wonderful landscapes of Egypt and the Holy Land.

The Art of the Pharaohs

The art of Pompeii

PREFACE BY ZAHI HAWASS, TEXT BY GIORGIO FERRERO PHOTOGRAPHS BY ARALDO DE LUCA

PHOTOGRAPHS BY ARALDO DE LUCA TEXT BY ANTONELLA MAGAGNINI

Thanks to its large format, this magnificently illustrated book shows portraits and monuments that are considered to be artistic masterpieces of antiquity in a new light. It traces the profiles of several sovereigns, presenting an accurate and in-depth picture of the history and art of Ancient Egypt and its undisputed protagonists: the Pharaohs. “King of Upper and Lower Egypt,” “Lord of the Two Lands,” and “Son of Ra,” are some of the titles held by the sovereigns who ruled over one of the richest and most powerful states of antiquity for more than 3,000 years. The history of Ancient Egypt through the millennia is marked by a succession of sovereigns and dynasties.

The catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 freeze-framing a ripe moment in time - bestowed upon posterity an incalculable heritage of art and knowledge in the miraculously well-preserved remains of the city of Pompeii. This volume of lush color images taken by renowned photographer Araldo De Luca, takes readers inside the houses and into the secrets of one of the most charming sites of classical antiquity. Accompanying the photos, which are presented in a distinguished oversized format, are accessible texts that elucidate the daily life, the mythic and heroic imagination, and the religious customs and beliefs of the ancient Romans.

Wonders of the World

TEXT BY LUCIA GASPARINI AND SERENA MARABELLI

TEXT BY FRANCESCO BOCCIA

This authoritative volume traces more than two thousand years of timeless masterpieces that have become universal symbols of the genius of humankind, from the mask of Tutankhamun to “The Scream” by Edward Munch. Organized chronologically, each work of art is presented through a meticulously researched text that analyzes the techniques employed by the artist and places each art work in its historical context. Throughout the book, fine quality photographs from the archives of the world’s foremost museums reveal the mastery of each artist through pictures that depict each work in its entirety as well as details that are discussed in the text.

Organized chronologically, Wonders of the World starts with the pyramids at Giza which were built in 2560 BC and ends with the Experience Music Project in Seattle, a museum of rock and roll memorabilia and technology-intensive multimedia displays designed by Frank Gehry and built in 2000. Among the countless other buildings featured in this book are The Parthenon in Athens, Angkor Thom in Siem Reap, Cambodia, The Taj Mahal in India, The Capitol of the United States in Washington, DC, The Opera House of Sydney, and The Sagrada Família, in Barcelona.

Last African Warriors TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY GIANNI GIANSANTI This large format photography book, with its striking visual impact, is a collection of work by the late Gianni Giansanti. The material comes from his travels in Africa, the cradle of humanity, where ancestral ties to nature still exist. It chronicles the lifestyle and social structure of Ethiopian tribes in the Omo Valley, looking at populations of warriors as well as peaceful peoples, highlighting the pride and strength of these individuals so accustomed to physical hardship and suffering. Enhanced by these extraordinary images, this volume also pays homage to the skill of a photographer who was always present for history in the making, and who never gave up on his search for the origins of man.

A photography exhibit will open in September 2010 at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan including pictures taken from this book. Large format: 34 x 41.5 cm The book is also available in reduced format: 28.5 x 34.9 cm

GIANNI GIANSANTI began his career as a freelance photographer in Italy in 1978. He provided exclusive coverage for important events in Italian history and won many international prizes for his reporting. His photo essays often became bestsellers; among the most successful were John Paul II and Benedict XVI, published by White Star Publishers. In 2009, Giansanti also created an exhibit called “Twenty Italians Who Are Changing Italy. This photographic retrospective, presented in Florence at Palazzo Strozzi, was a great public and critical success.

Once Upon a Time in Africa 50 years of explorations and adventures TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANGELO AND ALFREDO CASTIGLIONI PREFACE BY GIOVANNA SALVIONI AND ALESSANDRO ROCCATI

ONCE UPON A TIME IN AFRICA 50 years of explorations and adventures Text and photographs by Angelo and Alfredo Castiglioni 272 pages - 25.5 x 29.5 cm 507 color photographs hardcover with jacket 978 88 544 0485 4

The last heirs of the great explorers of the 19th century, twins Angelo and Alfredo Castiglioni have collected, during the long decades of field research, precious documents, exceptional photos and new evidence of a continent that no longer exists. Entered with strength in the Third Millennium and in the global communication routes, Africa travels, today, towards modernity, wiping out, day after day, every heritage of its own composite cultural and ethnic identity. For this reason the precious archeological and anthropological work made by the Castiglioni brothers is particularly important today. This volume reconstructs, through the almost 50-year career of the two Italian explorers, the deep identity of the Black Continent, from the most ancient traditions to the surprising passing rituals. An important part of the volume is dedicated to the archeological expeditions in Africa, starting with the discovery in the Nubian Desert in Sudan of Berenice Panchrysos, the “entirely gold” city of pharaohs, quoted by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia whose traces were lost. A find that the French Academician, Jean Vercoutter considered “among the great discoveries of archeology.” ANGELO and ALFREDO CASTIGLIONI carried out, for nearly 50 years, research expeditions in the archeological, anthropological and ethnologic field, most of all making accurate cine-photographic documentations. They have published several books and made five films, distributed in the national and international circuits: Africa segreta (1969); Africa Ama (1971); Magia Nuda (1975) with Alberto Moravia’s commentary; Addio Ultimo Uomo (1979) with Vittorio Suttafava’s commentary; and Africa dolce e selvaggia (1982). GIOVANNA SALVIONI teaches Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology at the Catholic University of Milan. Her training initially cultivated an interest in traditional African cultures. This was followed by an interest in the culture of the Roma ethnic group, in light of the general fight against all forms of poverty, discrimination, and racism. ALESSANDRO ROCCATI holds the Chair of Egyptology at the University of Turin. He has taught at several universities, both in Italy and abroad, and participated in numerous archeological missions in Egypt and Sudan. He has also organized international exhibits and conventions, and published many scientific works. From the start, his interests lay in the field of philology, language, literature, and culture of pharaonic Egypt.

TEXT BY IAGO CORAZZA, NICOLA PAGANO AND GRETA ROPA PHOTOGRAPHS BY IAGO CORAZZA

The result of years of research, numerous journeys and excellent contributions, this book offers an in-depth view into the fascinating contrasts and the behavior of a population that has always appeared impenetrable to Western curiosity and logic. Hundreds of spectacular and previously unpublished pictures lead directly to the heart of Japan. This is a journey through images and facts that bear witness to a country that can still amaze and fascinate, a country that can ask new questions and provide equally new solutions, in an extraordinary kaleidoscope of preservation and breaking from the past, the clash of tradition and the avant-garde.

A pictorial exploration of a wild and untamed region and of a population untouched by time and nature. Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea have somehow remained untouched by "civilization". This volume introduces readers to this place that is the reign of the last men of the earth. This heritage of humanity, which will probably not withstand the advance of modernity, is examined thoroughly in a compelling text written by a journalist who specializes in in-depth anthropological research. Hundreds of specially commissioned pictures taken by a photographer famous for his daring reportage from every corner of the globe bring to life this remarkable vestige of prehistory.

Gianni Giansanti, who has covered the Vatican for 20 years, photographed John Paul II and Benedict XVI during many public and private occasions. He has created fascinating reports that use the language of photography – an extraordinary instrument that has grasped the expressions and feelings of the two popes – to paint uncommon portraits of these two important figures. The books examine memoirs, new reports, and pictures of their public and private life to show the official face as well as the private and human side of these great pontiffs. What clearly emerges is the multifaceted figure of John Paul II, a charismatic Christian leader who powerfully shaped the last decades of the 20th century, and a truthful portrait of Benedict XVI, ‘the German pope’, with, above all, his extraordinary love of life.

His photo essays often became bestsellers; among the most successful were John Paul II - The Great and John Paul II - The Pope Who Changed the World and Benedict XVI - The dawn of a new papacy, published by White Star Publishers. In 2009, Giansanti also created an exhibit called “Twenty Italians Who Are Changing Italy.” This photographic retrospective, presented in Florence at Palazzo Strozzi, was a great public and critical success.

Surf ! In the water with wave hunters TEXT BY GUILLAUME DUFAU

SURF! In the water with wave hunters Text by Guillaume Dufau 208 pages - 26.5 x 31 cm Hardcover with jacket

Surfing: sport of Hawaiian kings and king of aquatic sports. Practiced since time immemorial in the South Pacific, in the 20th century it has conquered beaches all around the world and given rise to many sports born from the imagination and passion of those practicing it. From windsurfing to kite surfing, passing through bodyboarding or tow-in surfing -which allows surfers, using jet skis, to conquer vertiginous aquatic peaks, impossible to face in the past with just the force of the arms -- numerous technical innovations have allowed the tribe of wave-hunters to increase their numbers. Creative technology goes hand-in-hand with profound respect for the traditional “cavalcades” inherited from the past, such as Body Surfing, a movement of the body upon the wave inspired by dolphins, or Standup Paddling, done with a huge board maneuvered on foot with the aid of a paddle. Riders is a magnificent photographic journey through the history of gliding on waves, enriched by testimonies from top champions in each of the disciplines. Originally from Landes, the department in the southwest of France famous all around the world for the quality of its waves, GUILLAUME DUFAU discovered surfing on the beach break waves of Hossegor in the 1980s. In 1997, after his studies in journalism, he became part of the Surf Saga magazine team, becoming editorin-chief a year later at the age of 24. After that, for 10 years he was head of the editing department for the monthly Surf Session, at Biarritz, for whom he produced numerous documentaries from the four corners of the world, particularly Tahiti. A great reporter, he regularly publishes articles on the so-called sport de glisse, travel, and environment, for the French and international press.

The Perfect Storm TEXT BY ORNELLA D’ALESSIO

THE PERFECT STORM Text by Ornella D’Alessio 28.5 x 33.5 cm - 208 pages 106 color photographs Hardcover with jacket 978 88 544 0576 9 also available in reduced format: 24.5x29 cm

This is a volume rich in powerful images, dedicated to the most overwhelming and intoxicating aspects of the sea, the incredible violence unleashed during storms, and the extraordinary force of waves with their disturbing beauty. The sea is life, pure energy expressed in ways that evoke the most diverse states of mind. The sea is movement. Nothing embodies certain explosive sensations, feelings or uncontrollable urges better than waves breaking on rocks during a storm, exploding in white clouds of salt water, or the violence of a storm in the open sea, when nature’s irrepressible fury is unleashed in all of its unpredictability. In these pages, the sea is also revealed as the symbol of nature as a friend, as a positive force running through the white swirls of waves. It is ridden with mastery and audacity by adventurous surfers, protagonists of an extraordinary gallery of images. They venture patiently and fearlessly into the midst of frightfully powerful waves up to 17-feet (5-m) high, in order to ride their clear blue surface with an unmatched thrill. And there they go, leaping onto the crest of the wave at precisely the right moment, to finally dominate the wave and, in doing so, to exercise the same control over themselves, their emotions, and their own lives. Just as captivating are the images of other men battling against the force of the sea; famous sportsmen or common workmen caught in the vortex of a storm, with all their senses alert and the tension that comes from feeling all their remaining energy put to the test. Giant waves rise high and menacing, then crash down on the seamen with an infernal roar. The waves strike the ship with increasing speed and intensity, while the air resonates with the strident sounds of the storm. This book evokes the voice of the storm through a collection of powerful photographs that arouse strong emotions, both in those who know the sea well through direct experience, and in those who dream of it, like a mirror of their own soul and the expression of multiple states of their own conscience. ORNELLA D’ALESSIO, a great traveler by vocation, D’Alessio is a freelance journalist and author of guides and books. She collaborates with leading weekly and monthly travel magazines. Since adolescence, her curiosity and nomad spirit have led her to discover distant places and their cultures. But her greatest love is the sea, which has motivated her to cross oceans and face storms—only sometimes perfect. She’s often accompanied by her children, Marianna and Pietro. Her passion for the Mediterranean led her to return to Liguria, her only true land, where she has chosen to live.

Wonders of the Holy Land Wonders of America TEXT BY CARLO GIORGI

TEXT BY ELIZABETH HEATH

The Holy Land is a prophetic place where history, faith, and tradition are deeply rooted and in glorious evidence, a crossroads of peoples and armies, contested since its beginnings and inflamed by political and religious conflicts. This stirring primer on the geographical area comprised, roughly, of Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Jordan, and parts of Lebanon, is illustrated with photographs that inspire reverence and curiosity. Featured are marvellous archaeological sites, monuments sacred to one or more of the three Abrahamic religions, as well as arid deserts, verdant agricultural regions, and resorts that satisfy the modern tourist’s desires for pleasure and enchantment.

The true American identity is hard to define, as the nation has so many faces and moods. “America” is many places, and no one book of photographs can capture all its beauty and diversity. But the photos in this volume provide keen insight into the true character of the USA, as seen in its cities and towns, on its beaches and deserts, and in its forests and rivers. In these pages, we discover the America that has inspired centuries of human exploration and development, that has brought waves of immigrants to its shores in search of better lives, that has spawned passionate environmental movements, and that has forever held a place of fascination with people around the world.

CARLO GIORGI is a journalist and the editor of the Italian magazine Terrasanta (Holy Land), published by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land. He has traveled to the Middle East numerous times, and edited a book on Pope Benedict XVI’s recent visit to Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian Territories.

ELIZABETH HEATH is an American-born freelance writer and editor. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, was raised in Florida and lived for several years in Washington, DC. She has written art, entertainment, interior design, outdoors, lifestyle and travel articles for national and regional magazines, newspapers and websites.

Wonders of New York TEXT BY ALESSANDRA MATTANZA New York does not pause and it has no limits, despite being ravished by the wound of the World Trade Center. Its response to this injury was a magnificent rebirth from the ashes, expressed in art, architecture and design. A rebirth that is expressed in new neighborhoods within the city itself, which were born, and which grow and develop from ideas and creativity, from the solidarity of the people, that sense of great freedom, the true strength of the City: the New New York. New York is like an infinite onion, that you discover layer after layer, never tiring of peeling. You get to know it step by step, in the shadow of its breathtakingly tall skyscrapers, its buildings, its townhouses, in the elegance and glamor, in the flavors of cuisines from around the world, in the formality of its museums, in the magic of evocative moments and glimpses of street life. ALESSANDRA MATTANZA lives in New York. As a writer, journalist and photographer, she feels multi-faceted like the City that she loves and adores from its most insignificant sidewalk to the top of its stunning skyscrapers. She writes for the major Italian and German magazines and for several publishers, including Sperling & Kupfer, White Star and Giunti. She is also the author of a work of fiction “Storie di New York, FBE Edizioni (2010).

TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY JIM WARK

PHOTOGRAPHS BY MICHAEL YAMASHITA TEXT BY ELIZABETH BIBB

This photo album of America as seen from the sky portrays the spectacular grandeur of the nation’s diverse and dramatic landscape from a special perspective. The author, a pilot and geologist, conceived the project as an exercise in freedom, flying just a quarter-mile above the ground inside a stealthy, single-engine bush plane into remote and intimate locales and all kinds of weather. From the craggy coasts of Maine to the island paradise of Hawaii, from soaring peaks to placid valleys, he captured unusual expressions of the earth, the geometric beauty of rural fields, and the humming hyperactivity of big-city highways.

The full grandeur of New York is too difficult to take in at street level. It’s just too congested, even if it is so in the most stimulating way, with its polyglot mix of bustling peoples, styles, and energies. The only way to get a full picture of what the city looks like is to follow photographer Michael Yamashita’s axiom – “Go high.” In this book, the award-winning National Geographic shooter showcases Gotham neighborhood by neighborhood, capturing characteristic street scenes and stunning city structures from the vantage point of what every New Yorker would kill for: a room with a view.

JIM WARK is an aerial photographer specializing in unusual landscapes and cultural sites throughout North and Central America. A former naval aviator, airshow pilot, geologist, and mining engineer, he set out in 1990 to document his vision of America from on high, using a Christen Husky high-wing bush aircraft.

MICHAEL YAMASHITA is an award-winning photographer for National Geographic for whom shooting aerials is often the most exciting part of his job. Among his many books are The Great Wall (Sterling) and Marco Polo: A Photographer’s Journey (White Star Publishers). When at home in New Jersey, he’s a volunteer firefighter.

Italy is enchanting, bewitching. It casts a spell. It is easy for visitors to fall in love with Italy because every minute of every day they spend there has something to offer them to appeal to all of their senses, whether they are visiting museums or flying over its rooftops, bell-towers, domes, endless plains, rolling hills and majestic mountains. A wealth of beauty unfolds, the work of Man and Nature that belongs to all: visible, accessible and famous. Beauty that lies in the historical, architectural and natural heritage. A heritage to protect and hand down to future generations, and to all those future travelers who will always come to Italy.

Our planet contains countless treasures both of natural beauty and of the work of humankind, portrayed from above and immortalized thanks to the art and skill of the world’s best photographers: the deep canyons of North America, the dense forests of South America, the dizzying peaks of the Himalayas and the Alps, the pearls of sand and the atolls of Polynesia, the burning furnaces of still-active volcanoes, the immense glaciers of the poles, the lunar colors of the boundless. Add to this the medieval villages of Europe, the ancient cities of the Maya and the Romans, the great works of humankind.

SIMONA STOPPA is a professional journalist who specializes in the fields of nature, tourism, marine life and anthropology. She creates and develops new television program formats and produces custom corporate films for companies in various sectors. In addition, she has written tourist guides for Touring Club Italiano and White Star.

ENRICO LAVAGNO is an expert in Oriental cultures. For many years he has worked for White Star publishers, especially in the fields of archaeology, history and art. He has also translated many works on these subjects from English and French into Italian.

This volume whisks us over familiar sights that become extraordinary when viewed through the lens of Jim Wark, and rarely seen wonders that are all the more incredible for the aerial vantage point from which we experience them. We soar over the majestic Grand Canyon, the craggy peaks of the Rocky Mountains, and the magnificent Great Lakes, marvelling at colors, patterns, and textures evoked in Wark’s images. The lush Hawaiian Islands tempt us from above, while the glaciers of Alaska loom large, even when viewed from this lofty viewpoint. The patchwork of farmland in the Midwest, the necklace of lights created by New York City’s bridges at night, and the wonders of national parks like Yellowstone all come to life when admired from above, in this spectacular volume.

Glorious full-color aerial photographs accompanied by informative captions transport us to this land of Celtic and Viking memories. Antonio Attini, one of the masters of this art form, takes us on a guided tour that depicts the vivid colors and incomparably lush landscapes of the Emerald Isle. We are transported over gentle valleys and the verdant hills that give the island its affectionate nickname. Designed to recreate an extraordinary plane trip over Ireland, this volume reveals the unique patterns and colors that only become apparent when viewed from above, and uncovers hidden corners of the country that we could not experience without the benefit of Antonio Attini as our skillful guide.

High above Venice PHOTOGRAPHS BY MARCELLO BERTINETTI TEXT BY SIMONA STOPPA Packed with colorful photographs, this book takes readers on tour above one of Italy’s most popular city. Featuring hundreds of birds-eye photographs, this volume expands our perceptions of a city that already looms large in our mind’s eye. Taking readers on an aerial adventure above this ever-fascinating city and its surrounding, the images in High Above Venice depict a city that is as breathtakingly beautiful in reality as it is in our imagination. A wide variety of panoramas depict the sights that are distinctly Venetian: the emerald-green Lagoon with its picturesque islands of Burano, Torcello, and Murano, the brightly-colored homes of Burano, the network of canals branching out from the S shaped Grand Canal, the venerable palaces, centuriesold homes, and world-famous monuments which are all the more compelling when viewed from above. For anyone who has experienced the magic of Venice, this volume is a souvenir to be cherished. And for anyone who hopes to travel to this city, it will serve as inspiration. Acclaimed photographer MARCELLO BERTINETTI has been published in many major magazines and periodicals. In addition, his work has been published in numerous books and used in major advertising campaigns. In 1984, he founded White Star Publishers and he currently works as publisher of the company as well as continuing to work as a professional photographer. SIMONA STOPPA is a travel journalist who specializes in the environment, nature, marine studies and anthropology. She is a regular contributor to Italian television as a writer and director. She has created new television programs and videos for companies working in a broad range of activities, and has contributed content for them. She writes illustrated books and guidebooks for the Italian Touring Club and also for White Star Publishers. Stoppa also contributes to a number of travel magazines, such as Meridiani, Tuttoturismo and In Viaggio; she has also created videos for the Focus.it and GenteViaggi.it websites. In addition to teaching at Brescia’s Catholic University, she provides consulting services to corporations, using audiovisual instruments for empowerment, teambuilding and team-working.

Libya An ancient country looks towards the future TEXT BY GIORGIO GALANTI

LIBYA An ancient country looks towards the future Text by Giorgio Galanti 144 pages - 24.5 x 30.5 cm Hardcover with jacket

If the earth and sand could conserve the imprints of the passing conquerors, the soil of Libya would never cease revealing its traces of forgotten epics. But what do we truly know about Libya beyond the megalomaniac figure of Colonel Qaddafi? We must not forget that this vast desert region bordered by Algeria, Chad, and Egypt is a an enchanting beauty: ruins of ancient cities; cave paintings that bear witness to a fertile age in the middle of the desert of Fezzan, where millennia ago a now-vanished civilization once flourished; magical landscapes of the region of the great lakes; Ghadames, one of the most ancient cities in the world and an oasis located on the Spice Route; the Tuareg, nomadic lords whose culture is still alive... This richly illustrated book presents an introduction framing the country in terms of geography, landscape, and socio-cultural aspects. It also includes a chapter on the history of Libya from antiquity to present day, embracing even the most recent events regarding the Civil War. This volume offers a look at a country and a people who aspire to nothing more than to live in peace and with dignity. - A book that captures the current international issues. - A chapter dedicated to the country’s history, from ancient times to the most recent events of the Civil War. - A rich iconographic apparatus, with 215 photos. GIORGIO GALANTI is a freelance journalist and contributes to many Italian periodicals and newspapers. He has traveled all over the world and is a specialist on travel themes and locations.

The wonders of Portofino and the Italian Riviera TEXT BY GIULIANA MANGANELLI Spectacular photographs and an evocative text combine in this book dedicated to the wonders of Liguria, a land of natural contrasts, squeezed as it is between the mountains on one side and the sea on the other, which at times hurls itself onto its shores with furious power and at others soothes them with its gentle surf playing among the boats and nets of the local fishermen. The different chapters add up to produce a full and up-to-date picture of this region. GIULIANA MANGANELLI was born in Genoa in 1949. After graduating in English Language and Literature, she taught at the University of Genoa for several years. Between 1978 and 1992 she worked as a producer and presenter for the Ligurian branch of RAI1, and hosted several different cultural and entertainment shows, including Week End, a program of artistic itineraries exploring the region. For the past several years she has been a regular contributor to the culture and entertainment section of the Genoa newspaper Il Secolo XIX.
