In the Western White Mountains, the natural splendor of New Hampshire is on full display. Mixed coniferous and deciduous forests, lush with color in the fall, beckon visitors from around the world, while a variety of manmade attractions, outdoor adventures, scenic drives, and train rides pay homage to the region’s rich history of tourism.

Prior to serving as the gateway to adventure, though, the western White Mountains were known for another industry: logging. In the 1800’s and early 1900’s, as many as 19 logging railroads were in operation throughout the area. The impact on the landscape was staggering, with clear cut hills and muddy streams showing the effects of rampant logging. Thanks to the foresight of lawmakers and conservation groups, as well as outcry from the public, this area was saved and revitalized by the passing of the revolutionary Weeks Act in 1911. Many regard this act as the “single most important law in the creation of the national forests in the eastern United States”.

Now, visitors can enjoy the grandeur of the White Mountains in many ways. For a stunning drive, head east across the Kancamagus Highway, a 34-mile scenic stretch that connects Lincoln to Conway. Did you know the “Kanc” is the Northeast’s first National Scenic Byway?

If you feel like heading west, drive up over Kinsman Notch. This is the westernmost of the major notches in NH, and features everything f rom Beaver Cascades and Beaver Pond to the endlessly explorable Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves

Other regional highlights include the Walter Newton Natural Area in Plymouth. This 1.2-mile loop trail features a cellar hole, a bog, and Rainbow Falls. The falls are most stunning after a period of rain or snow melt. The J.E. Henry Trail is a 3.2-mile out and back path in Lincoln that runs alongside the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River.

Notch to the villages of Woodsville and Bath.  The road winds along the Wild Ammonoosuc River; be sure to pull over and snap a few pictures of the historic covered bridges you’ll see along the way.

The Covered Bridge Capital c New England!

Looking for covered bridges? Look no farther than Woodsville and Bath. Three covered bridges are located within mere miles of one another—cross all of them off your check list!

The Bath-Haverhill Covered Bridge is the oldest covered bridge still in use in the state. It is the only bridge to be erected at this site and includes a covered passageway for pedestrians.

The Bath Bridge, in the center of Bath Village, is the longest covered bridge in the state with both sides located in New Hampshire. It features an enclosed pedestrian sidewalk and is also among the oldest.

The Swiftwater Covered Bridge is a locally distinctive single span Paddleford truss design built over the Wild Ammonoosuc River. This section of the river was once used to float logs to the local sawmill.

The Ammonoosuc Recreational Rail Trail runs for 19 miles from Central Street in Woodsville to Industrial Park Road in Littleton and is open to biking, walking, horseback riding, X-C skiing, ATVs & snowmobiles. The Ammonoosuc River provides a gorgeous backdrop to this trail. Along the way, the Lisbon Depot is a must see.

Bedell Bridge State Park is a 38-acre park located along the Connecticut River. The park was the site of a historic two span covered bridge, the second longest in the country.

Explore the 258-mile Connecticut River Byway, known as the natural bridge that unites New Hampshire and Vermont.

These two small towns sitting on the western edge of the White Mountains epitomize easy outdoor living. Visitors to Warren and Rumney (located within the Baker River Valley) have their pick of exploring hidden back roads, swimming holes, and walking trails, or sampling everything from paddling and tubing to rock climbing.

Rumney Rocks Climbing Area is the spot to visit if rock and ice climbing are your thing–in fact, this world-renowned location features hundreds of different routes! The Warren Recreation Trail is also a great choice for outdoor enthusiasts looking for variety. Its 4-mile stretch is mountain bike, ATV, snowshoe, cross-country ski, and snowmobile friendly, and eventually connects to the Mount Moosilauke ATV trail system.

The most notable (and quirky!) stop here is Warren’s Redstone Rocket , a towering reminder of the Cold War era space race. This rocket is a replica of the booster rocket that lifted Alan B. Shephard, America’s first astronaut, into space on a brief suborbital trip.

For a historical spot in Rumney, look no further than the Mary Baker Eddy Historic House, which housed the founder of Christian Science from 1860–1862. Tours of the interior are available by appointment, but scenic drivers are welcome to stop and take a few pictures of the timeless exterior.

For that classic, historic New Hampshire feel, look no further than the picturesque towns of Plymouth, Campton, and Thornton.

Plymouth’s Main Street, as well as the state university campus within its boundaries, is perfect for strolling and sightseeing. Town landmarks include the Robert Frost Statue (located in front of Rounds Hall), and the Boy Scout Fountain on the Town Common. One of only two Boy Scout fountains in the United States, it was gifted to the town in 1923 by a Philadelphia sculptor. Covered bridge lovers should head to Campton–the town has several, including the Blair Bridge (built in 1869) and the Bump Bridge (rebuilt in 1972). Campton is also the birthplace of Sylvester Marsh, the visionary who built the famous Mount Washington Cog Railway!

Mountain summits, imposing ridgelines, and unique, small towns are just some of the images that comes to mind when one thinks about the Northern White Mountains. Home to two scenic notches (deep narrow valleys that run through our iconic mountains), world renowned hiking, biking, snowmobiling, ski trails, and historic attractions make this the perfect region for adventurers and families alike.

Both Franconia and Crawford Notches are known for popular hikes including Franconia Ridge, Artist Bluff and Bald Peak, and Mount Willard (just to name a few). Skiers will love Cannon Mountain; New Hampshire’s only state-run ski area and home to North America’s first aerial tramway.

Outdoor adventurers will enjoy bike paths and rail trails including the Franconia Notch Bike Path, PRKR Mtn Trails, the Ammonoosuc Rail Trail, and the Presidential Rail Trail. Kayakers and canoeists will love exploring Echo Lake, Moore Reservoir, and the Androscoggin River.

Known as the “newest” town in New Hampshire, Sugar hill was incorporated in 1962 and named for the large groves of sugar maples located within town limits. The quintessential New England village offers unparalleled views of the Franconia Range, which helped persuade notable folk—including actress Bette Davis and novelist Earnest Poole—to reside in the area.

In 1929, the first resort-based ski school in the country was established on the slopes of a hill in town, providing the initial push to the sport America knows today.

The glorious fields of pink and purple lupine flowers bloom in June, making Sugar Hill one of the most scenic places to visit in Northern New England.

Franconia sits on a rich iron deposit, and the region once produced pig iron and bar iron for farm tools and cast-iron ware. It is home to the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway and was once home to Franconia College during the 1960s and 1970s.

Besaw Iron Furnace is an octagonal stone stack visible on the far bank of the Gale River, built with local granite, and is all that remains of this 200-year-old iron smelter.

The charming town of Littleton features local eateries and breweries, beloved boutiques, the world’s longest candy counter, and countless outdoor recreation opportunities.

The 100-year-old Opera House marks the true start of Main Street, a stretch packed with independently owned businesses and tax-free shopping . Decorative wrought iron arches along the way mark the entrance to the River District of Littleton. Keep an eye out for an angelic mural located on a downtown brick wall—it’s the perfect selfie spot!

Surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest, the towns of Twin Mountain and Bretton Woods offer year-round outdoor adventure, natural beauty, the Northeast’s highest mountain peak, and boast hundreds of years of hospitality.

Twin Mountain was incorporated in 1832 as the town of Carroll, which includes the villages of Twin Mountain, Bretton Woods, Fabyans, and Crawfords. Early settlers farmed fertile soil and felled the expansive forests. Today, the past informs the present from the long-gone grand hotels to the once thriving logging towns to the town’s historic cemeteries.

Bretton Woods is home to the Omni Mount Washington Resort, where delegates from 44 nations convened in 1944 to establish the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. The signing of the formal documents took place in the Gold Room, located off the hotel lobby and now preserved as a historic site. The distinctive red-roofed hotel is a destination for guests from around the world and offers a veranda ideal for sipping a cup of tea or coffee while enjoying the stunning panoramic mountain views.

The historic Crawford Path ranks as the oldest continuously maintained hiking trail in the United States. Dating back to 1819, the National Recreation Trail runs from Route 302 in Crawford Notch to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington.

Bretton Woods Ski Area is home to the Bretton Woods Skyway, the state’s first 8-person gondola. Open in the winter for skiers and riders, and seasonally for scenic rides with views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range.

Set amid the farms and forests of northern New Hampshire, Jefferson is home to the oldest 18-hole golf course in the state, a Christmas theme park that has been family-owned and operated for 70 years, and endless miles of trails and panoramic views of the Presidential Range. Lancaster started as an 18th century mill town and today is a rural village with a boutique Main Street, 4-season outdoor recreation, and a 420-acre state park.

Head to the top of the stone fire tower on Mount Prospect in Weeks State Park for a 360-degree view of the Northern White Mountains. The John Wingate Weeks House Museum is open to the public and there are many trails to explore the 446-acre property.

Everyone wants to see a moose! One of the questions we get asked the most here in the White Mountains is, “where can I see a moose?” While it’s not an exact science, the best time to catch a glimpse of these majestic giants is dusk and dawn, and your chances of seeing one are even higher if you make the drive to Route 3N, 115, and 2.

Nestled beneath the mountains north of the Presidential Range, Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge has been called one of the crown jewels of New Hampshire’s landscape. The ponds, wetlands, and forests of this refuge support a wide variety of ecological features. Hike one of the many hiking trails, or bring your bike and explore the scenic and well-maintained section of the Presidential Rail Trail that meanders through the refuge.

Berlin, located along the Androscoggin River, and known as the “City that Trees Built” was once the center of the papermaking industry. Today, Berlin offers visitors a chance to experience the outdoors by various means, including foot, pedal power, ATV, snowmobile, raft, guided moose tour, and more.

Where Routes 2 and 16 meet is Gorham. When the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad arrived in the 1850s, the town became a tourist destination and it remains so today. Interesting shops, fabulous restaurants, and nearby recreation opportunities make it a great place to plan a stay.

Jericho Mountain State Park ATV, UTV, and snowmobile enthusiasts alike will enjoy miles of trails and scenic outlooks throughout the park.

Pinkham Notch Route 16 travels through this northern mountain pass that separates the Presidential Range from the Wildcat Range. Adventure awaits!

The Great North Woods is New Hampshire’s wildest region. From this remote outpost, visitors can explore the northernmost reaches of the White Mountain National Forest, where endless acres await. Take an ATV or snowmobile out on the trail. Pack up your fishing gear and head to a local pond. Kayak down a river or climb a mountain. Along the way, you just might encounter the wildlife that this part of Coos County is famed for.

Moose Alley, located along Route 3, is the place to be if you’re looking to spot one of the state’s iconic ungulates. Local tour companies offer dusk excursions specifically geared towards moose sightings. We recommend paying special attention to watery hollows along the roadway or driving along Route 16 near Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge and Thirteen Mile Woods.

In addition to being home to the magnificent moose, the Great North Woods is also home to Dixville Notch, the tiny town that is first in the nation to cast its votes during the U.S. presidential election.

Driving through the notch, take note of the historic Balsams Resort. This is one of the few remaining grand hotels in the region, and while it is shuttered for the time being, its iconic red roofed structure is perfect for a few quick roadside photos on the shores of Lake Gloriette.

Beaver Falls is another easily accessible stop for photos, while a hike up to Table Rock yields impressive valley views.

Lodging in this region ranges from backcountry camping to rural campgrounds and local inns.

Cranmore Mountain Resort WHITAKER WOODS

Located between the Lakes and White Mountains regions, Tamworth is a historic town founded in 1766 that encompasses the villages of Tamworth, Chocorua, Whittier, South Tamworth, and Wonalancet. Tamworth is home to Lake Chocorua, White Lake, flowing brooks and rivers, streams and ponds, and the oldest repertory theatre in the United States.

When driving Route 16 in Tamworth, it’s difficult to ignore the commanding view of Mount Chocorua with serene Lake Chocorua in the foreground. Be sure to pull over and take a stroll along the wooden bridge to get the perfect photo. You’ll understand why this is one of the most photographed mountains in America. You’ll often see kayakers, canoeists, and swimmers enjoying the refreshing lake. Try to spot New Hampshire’s abbreviation, “NH”, constructed somewhere in the bridge.

In addition to its stunning scenery, this part of the White Mountains is filled with charming reminders of the past. Take your time traveling through quaint villages complemented by stone walls, churches, and farmland; it’s beautiful year-round, but particularly in the fall! Along the way, be on the lookout for the historic marker in Wonalancet, detailing the history of the Chinook sled dog, which was first bred in NH and is now the state dog. The Ossipee Mountains are now a hiker’s paradise, but this mountain range was once an ancient volcano range. Some popular peaks are Mt. Shaw, Mt. Roberts, and Bald Knob.

Seasons of the White Mountains 89

A popular vacation destination, the Lakes Region is fittingly named for the 273 lakes and ponds in the region, the largest of which are Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Winnisquam, Squam Lake, and Newfound Lake. Throughout the region, the scenery is spectacular, the waters are crystal clear, the beaches are sandy, and there is every imaginable water sport available including ice fishing and ice sailing in the winter.

Lake Winnipesaukee’s approximate number of miles of shoreline

Approximate surface area (in square miles) of Lake Winnipesaukee

Maximum depth (in feet) of Lake Winnipesaukee

Lake Winnipesaukee, with mountain ranges and wooded shoreline as the backdrop, takes the prize as the largest lake in New Hampshire and is also the third largest lake in New England. While this area is known mostly for its lakes, there are two small mountain ranges that offer great hiking and stunning views: the Belknap and the Ossipee Mountains. Take advantage of the multitude of water activities such as boating, water skiing, swimming, and fishing or make your way to Weirs Beach with its boardwalk, train rides, and family amusements.

Be sure to tour Squam Lake in Holderness, where the multiple Academy Award-winning movie, On Golden Pond was filmed. See the sights from the movie that starred Henry and Jane Fonda, and Katherine Hepburn.

The lake towns of Moultonborough and Wolfeboro have been vacation destinations since the turn of the last century—so long that Wolfeboro’s motto is “The Oldest Summer Resort in America”. When visiting these towns, enjoy stunning lakeside dining, specialty shops, and upscale accommodations.

In Moultonborough, plan on a visit to the Old Country Store & Museum. In operation since 1781, the store has been the site of the old post office, library, and stagecoach stop. Stop by to pick up unique home décor, clothing, NH made items, and fun, New Hampshire history books.

Founded in 1912, the Libby Museum is New Hampshire’s oldest natural history museum. Artifacts in this eclectic museum were collected from as far away as China and as near as the local woods. Explore the museum’s nature path and stunning view of Lake Winnipesaukee from right outside the door. Hours and days of operation vary, but it is open the months of June 1-Columbus Day weekend.

4. The Russell / Colbath House Built around 1831, and owned and operated as a museum by the US White Mountain National Forest Service, this is the only surviving early homestead in the Swift River Valley. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

5. Sabbaday Falls A gravel path approximately 1/4 mile, handicapped accessible, leads to a spectacular 45' waterfall and gorge.

Please Note: Parking spots on the Kanc during peak season can be scarce. We recommend visiting either early or late in the day.

DISCOVERY TRAIL

This 1 4 mile loop trail is located on the far western end of the Kanc and is a great option for families or those wanting to get out and stretch their legs without a huge hike involved . This underrated trail features interpretive panels along the route which showcase the ecological and historical aspects of the region Easy.

CHAMPNE Y FALLS

This popular trail along the Kancamagus Highway is a great trail for those wanting to access Mount Chocorua The trail has moderate grades along the way and for those not wanting to hike all the way to Chocorua, one can opt to take the loop path which diverges left off the trail to Champney Falls . The best waterfall viewing occurs after a rainfall or during spring melting The trail to the falls is 3 1 miles round-trip and takes about 2 5 hours Moderate.

MT. POTASH

This 4-mile hike is the most challenging on this list as there is a stream crossing at the star t and steady grades throughout the hike to the summit Hikers will be rewarded, however, with views of the Sandwich Wilderness, Mount Washington, and the Presidentials Moderate to Difficult.

Hiking 107

You’ve come to the right place! You can’t get more bang for your foliage buck than to hike up a mountain and see the autumn world spread out below. October is the perfect time to hike in the White Mountains, as the air is cooler, there isn’t as much foot traffic as in the summer, and the payoff at the top is incomparable! So lace up those hiking boots, grab your camera, and head for the hills!

SOUTH MOAT Conway

Enjoy 360 ° foliage views of Mt. Chocorua, the Presidentials, the Pemi Wilderness, and the village of  Conway from the bare, 2,770' rocky summit of South Moat. The trailhead for this 5.8-mile out and back hike begins near the Swift River Bridge in Conway.

FOSS MOUNTAIN Eaton

This .4-mile family-friendly hike is slightly off the beaten path but well worth the journey. Head to the small hamlet of Eaton until you reach the lower parking lot and trailhead. Enjoy sweeping foliage views from all angles and be sure to bring a blanket so you can sit and enjoy a snack atop the open rocky slabs at the summit.

BLACK MOUNTAIN Benton

Located in the western White Mountains town of Benton, Black Mountain may be considered small compared to some of our 4,000 footers, but what this 2,830’ peak lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in foliage views. (It didn’t make the 52 With a View list for nothing!)

Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests

Conserving places of special scenic beauty since 1901

The peak of Mt Washington was first seen by explorers off the New Hampshire coast in 1524

Known to Native Americans as Agiocochook , the summit was believed to be the home of the Great Spirit

Today, by foot, car or train, the 6,288' summit of Mount Washington is surprisingly accessible . Home to Mount Washington State Park, it is visited by more than 250,000 people each year from all over the world, who come to revel in the top-of-the-world views of New England, New York, Canada, and on a clear day, even the Atlantic Ocean!

The first footpath to the summit was carved out by Ethan Allen Crawford in 1819; today the Crawford Path is the oldest continually maintained footpath in the country Visitors can drive up the Mt. Washington Auto Road or simply leave the driving to the cheerful (and informative) stage coach guides .

The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world’s first mountain climbing railroad, opened in 1869 .

Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast and its weather is variable year-round . The record high temperature is 72°F; the record low, -47°F Without factoring in the wind chill!

With an average July temperature of 54°F, summer visitors can get a respite from warmer temperatures in the valleys below When you come, plan to bring a jacket and sturdy shoes And don’t forget your camera!

Pass options include a $5 day pass available onsite, a $30 single or $40 household annual pass for those who use the Forest year-round . THE COLORS of AUTUMN in the WHITE MOUNTAINS ARE DAZZLING!

for a more enjoyable Fall Foliage Visit in the White Mountains.

Plan Ahead Check attraction and activity websites before visiting to make sure you have up to date information, and to purchase advance online admissions.

Visit Mid-Week If your schedule allows, plan a visit mid-week; you may find that you have an overlook, trail, or roadway mostly to yourself.

Take the Roads Less Travelled To avoid the congestion that sometimes happens along busier routes, consider one of our “roads less traveled” for a more enjoyable autumn foliage experience. Head down a side road such as Rte. 112 West through Kinsman Notch, Rte. 118 in Warren, Rte. 113 in Sandwich, or Rte. 2 in Randolph and Jefferson. All are stunning at this time of year—and have less traffic!

Pack Your Patience Take a deep breath and enjoy our fresh mountain air and the scent of crisp fall leaves. Enjoy the fact that you’re in the White Mountains and soak in the beauty around you. Staffing shortages exist, and some businesses may have modified operating hours. Pack your patience along with your toothbrush and camera!

Be Safe

and Respectful

When visiting the White Mountains, please be mindful of your surroundings. Stay on the trail and leave only footprints when taking a hike. If you carry something into a park or attraction, be sure to carry it out. Familiarize yourself with the rules when it comes to camping and ask questions if you don’t know the answers. Be careful around water and on steep ledges—no Instagram post is worth hurting the environment or yourself. Respect the beauty of nature that surrounds you, as well as the staff at your favorite restaurants, breweries, hotels, and attractions.

winter hiking

A winter walk in the White Mountains can reward you with spectacular views and transport you to a winter wonderland. It’s important to know what equipment, gear, and clothing to bring with you on a winter hike and to keep a constant eye on the ever-changing weather. If conditions are not ideal, making the decision to turn around or plan for another day could save lives. Scan the QR code to learn more about winter hiking essentials.

Boulder Loop Trail

This 3.4 mile loop trail is located on the eastern side of the Kancamagus Highway and is considered to be of moderate difficulty. Expect stunning views and of course … boulders!

Flume Gorge

While the Flume Gorge attraction is not open in the winter, there is a 2-mile winter trail available to those who are looking for a bit of an adventure. Be sure to bring appropriate winter footwear, and as certain parts of the trail can get icy, it’s always good to plan on bringing microspikes or crampons. Enjoy winter views of the Flume’s covered bridges as well as the icy columns through the gorge itself. While the boardwalk has been removed to winter foot traffic, you will often see ice climbers making their way up the rock face.

Trails in Waterville Valley

Head to the town of Waterville Valley and experience the diverse hiking trail system that the Valley has to offer. There are many trails devoted to cross-country skiing as well as fatbiking, and there are also some beautiful winter walking trails for all abilities, including the aptly-named Cascade Path.

Fall Fairs in the White Mountains

When the leaves start to change color and there’s a certain crispness in the air, locals know that it’s fall fair season. The tradition of agricultural fairs began over 100 years ago, and many of our fairs have run continuously since that first cattle drive! Today, fairgoers enjoy food, entertainment, a midway, livestock exhibitions, tractor pulls, and more.
