The Run for the Black and Gold

May 20th at Acrisure Stadium Photographs courtesy of The Run for the Black and Gold

L

ast year’s Run was one of the biggest events on Pittsburgh’s social calendar. The mock horse racing event (think of the Kentucky Derby with a yinzer flair) features celebrity “jockeys,” including current and former Pittsburgh Steelers such as Cameron Heyward, Ryan Shazier and Kenny Pickett. It also features great food, music, a live auction and the chance to bet on the celebrity race (last year’s winners split a pot of more than $100,000). It’s the signature event for the Ryan Shazier Fund for Spinal Rehabilitation. The Fund is the brainchild of the former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker who saw first-hand just how life-altering a spinal cord injury is both for patients and their families who often serve as primary caregivers. Having been through that, Ryan vowed he would do what he could for people who didn’t have the resources and access to care that he received. It’s the second year of the event. This year, the goal is to raise more than $700,000 to help families who desperately need the resources the Fund provides. Every dollar matters in raising money to provide additional rehab sessions, home modifications, mental health support and other services that help individuals with spinal cord injuries have more meaningful and more independent lives. So, break out your derby wear and fascinators and join the fun!

TRIBUTE

Honoring the Life Story of Joe Hardy

W

Remembering Notable Shadyside Community Member John “Jack” Henne

e honor the 100-year life of Joe Hardy, a dear personal friend to so many and billionaire businessman of 84 Lumber and Nemacolin, as well as countless other ventures. Mr. Hardy kept his friends close and his family by his side. Iconoclastic in his ability to turn dreams into visions, and with a magnificent capacity for setting and accomplishing goals, Joe Hardy lived an inspirational life and leaves a tremendous legacy.

I

From the beginning to the end of his life, Joseph A. Hardy III was truly a man who did it all. A son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, student, graduate, pilot, gemologist, salesman, entrepreneur, commissioner, philanthropist, and super-human that embodied his favorite phrase and philosophy “nothing is impossible.” In true Hardy fashion, Joe passed away with his cigar in his hand, surrounded by his loving family singing Broadway show tunes to comfort him at his home in Farmington, PA. He was 100 years young. Joseph Alexander Hardy was born January 7, 1923 in Pittsburgh, a son of Norman and Katherine Hardy.

Jack passed away peacefully on Monday, September 5, 2022 at the age of 92. For many years he worked with his father, R. G. “Gerry” Henne, in the family jewelry business founded by Gerry’s father in 1887. During his time there, Jack made Henne Jewelers a pillar in the East End of Pittsburgh. After 91 years in East Liberty, he moved the store to Shadyside. It was a well-thought-out and brave move at the time which would prove to alter the lives of many. After the store’s relocation, Jack served as President of the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce and eventually passed the baton to his three children and finally, to his only son, John, who still leads the helm today.

Hardy attended Mt. Lebanon High School, Shadyside Academy, and Lehigh University. During his final year at Lehigh University, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as a radioman during World War II. In 1946, a young Joe Hardy began working for his father in the family-owned jewelry store, Hardy & Hayes. He attended the University of Pittsburgh as a part-time student during the four years he worked there and earned a degree in Industrial Engineering. It was during his time at Hardy & Hayes that Joe Hardy hit his stride as a natural salesman. He was, in fact, so good that his uncle scolded him for being too aggressive in achieving record-breaking sales. So, he knew it was time to do something on his own. With childhood friend Ed Ryan, of Ryan Homes fame, and brothers Norman and Bob, Mr. Hardy started Green Hills Lumber in a vacant basement. This business would grow and eventually become 84 Lumber, named after the town where it was headquartered.

t is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of a former President of the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce, and well-known community member, John “Jack” Henne.

Jack is lovingly remembered by his wife Nancy; three grateful children: John (Dara) Henne, Anne (Sam) Rockwell and Meg (Barry) Gibson; and eight blessed grandchildren: Hunter, Kathryn, Sydney, Jack, Sam, Luke, Mark and Clark. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and R. G. “Jerry” Henne as well as his siblings, Father Paul Henne and Peggy (Paul) Oldam. We at the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce send our deepest condolences to the Henne Family and all those who knew and loved John “Jack” Robert Henne. Courtesy of Think Shadyside!

Meet Brandon Max @itsbrandonmax

B

randon Max (@itsbrandonmax) is a 22-year-old “verified” TikTok influencer from the Burgh. He began using the popular platform in 2020 to cope with the loneliness he was experiencing during COVID-19. While quarantined at home, Brandon turned to the app to build community, inspire others, and connect with his friends through laughter and positivity. He built his following with close to 3 million followers after a friend suggested he post funny videos to uplift himself and his peers. The rest, as they say, is history! Outside of TikTok and his significant following on Instagram (80,000+), this Pittsburgh-based influencer enjoys running, traveling, and exercising and is quite the foodie. (Did somebody say grilled cheese and powdered donuts?!?!)

What are you eating?

“It’s cool to be different” is the motto that’s served him well as he continues to amass his followers, who patiently wait to meet him for photos, autographs, and hugs. “I want to show everyone that we can all come together as one.” he said.

I listen to a ton of upbeat music. I love Twenty One Pilots, Dua Lipa, and when I’m in the mood some good classic rock.

I’m eating lots of grilled cheese of course!! What are you listening to?

What do you do to maintain your healthy lifestyle? My uncle and I are training for my first 10K race this fall.

azz is notorious for the superior level of skill needed to play well. First, learn the rules. Then break them. The same principles apply to architecture. Ask Pittsburgh architect David Roth about jazz, and he will tell you the best haunts, talents, and shows in Pittsburgh.

His enthusiasm for music is contagious, and his passion is seeking out the newcomers and the ones who are playing simply for the joy of creating beauty. Ours is a city with many constructs, and music is at the heart of the culture here, built into the fabric of our souls. So too is our love for architecture. We take great pride in our buildings, parks, and spaces that help to define us as a community. Roth brings it all together in his images, telling the stories of those compelled to play, how sounds move through them, and what that all does to us. The skills required to capture moments of pure bliss take years to master, making the photographs even more exhilarating.

“We love our city’s history and today’s players are standing on the shoulders of giants.” — David Roth

Who are your favorite local performers? For this article let’s celebrate some of #PghJazz’s next generation: Tony DePaolis (contrabass); Anita Levels (vocal); Jason Washington Jr. (drums); G Glyn Loyd Jr. (electric bass); Roger Romero (sax); Antonio Croes (piano) and Mai Khoi (vocal). Why do you think the jazz scene is taking off in Pittsburgh again? We love our city’s history and today’s players are standing on the shoulders of giants. This question can’t be answered without giving credit to our educators, in particular Roger Humphries who started CAPA high school. He’s nurtured countless students in both the classroom and on the bandstand. He instilled a respect for the music, demanding excellence. His jam sessions are a right of passage, with him famously proclaiming them to be “no gong show.” You better know the tunes and be ready to perform at your best. We’re also into the second and third generation of players from same families. There’s no replacement for the leadership that our teachers, families and older players provide by example.

Jazz music is about learning the rules and then breaking them. As an architect and photographer, your perspective seems to be based on a similar concept. What are you looking for in your images? The challenge of the creativity in general is to always be making something new. I can shoot a performer many times, but I’m always seeking a new look. I consider the photos to be a portrait of the artist, so it’s important that their personality be conveyed in the image. My goal is simplicity and clarity, so most of the shots are close-ups without distracting backgrounds or foreground objects like microphones or music stands. I think about all the iconic images we have seen over the years and hope that someday my work may be as memorable.

What do you do to maintain a healthy lifestyle? For my mind, I practice Transcendental Meditation, my force field protection from the stresses of everyday life. For the body, I try to walk every day and eat right thanks to my beautiful wife Cris who feeds us vegetables each night for dinner. For my soul, there’s this music. Yes I do enjoy all good music like rock, soul and classics, but it’s jazz that is endlessly inspiring.

Where are your favorite places for jazz and why? Have to start with Con Alma who present the music at their two locations and use many of my photos for promotion. The best listening room is Alphabet City at The City of Asylum, an intimate setting that I’m sure the players appreciate. Kingfly Distillery is very similar with attentive audiences. Kente Arts Alliance present great shows with national artists, typically at New Hazlett Theater that are must see performances. Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild joined with Point Park University over the last two summers to present the music in their black box at their Playhouse. Trust Arts in summer at The Backyard is always fun. And we can’t leave out the August Wilson Center where we’ve had very memorable performances both in their theater as well as their jazz festival that now takes place at Highmark Stadium. What music are you listening to? I try to stay current by following the scene on social media. Recent #PghJazz releases from Deanna Witkowski (piano), Tony Campbell (sax), and George Heid III (drums). National stars with a #PghJazz connection and/or frequent visits like Benny Benack III, Sean Jones, Richie Goods and others are all friends made through my photography.

Mick Rock

A Lifetime of Shooting Stars by Christine McMahon Tumpson All photos courtesy of the Estate of Mick Rock

I

t is with the heaviest of hearts that we share our beloved psychedelic renegade has made the Jungian journey to the other side,” the statement read on November 19, 2022, the day after legendary rock music photographer Mick Rock left the planet. The iconic photographer is often called one of the most famous. A poetic man with a handsome exterior, great wit, and charming personality, he first picked up a 35MM in a “bit of an inebriated state”, and began photographing the woman alongside him. While the flirtation was brief, the thrilling rush of the weight of the camera in his hands made for a much more compelling desire. “My ambition was not to be a great photographer (though that certainly would have been a worthy stance). It was a lust to embrace anything that startled or energized me.”

Rock, born in Hammersmith, England, often claimed that destiny was his calling; to have the Rock moniker during the emergence of the genre in the 1960’s was prophetic. It was also a time when photographers were beginning to be seen as well, with Rock’s intense images becoming iconic as soon as he shot them. In his cleverly written, often laugh-outloud, autobiography, SHOT! By ROCK, he recalls stories of the moments of the images, the touching, and hilarious. The irreverence and wisdom of his personal perspective on life is expertly expressed, his use of words as iconic as his images. “I am not in the business of documenting or revealing personalities. I am in the business of freezing shadows and bottling auras.” Rock is the prototype immersion artist, although neither he nor the public knew it at the time. Bowie, Syd Barett, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Debbie Harry, Madonna, Bob Marley, and the cast of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, Rock shot them all, most of them for the first time. And they all welcomed him gladly into his world because he fit in, he was one of them, those on-the-edge renegades. “For my sins in a former life, I’ve been forced to spend an inordinate amount of time with musicians in this life. Of course, I love them.”

“I went backstage, asked if I could take a couple of pictures and he joked about my name – and I joked back that my name was actually my name, and his, of course, wasn’t. And we got on. Then I went back to his place in Beckenham a couple of days later for our first real session.” — Mick Rock

He became friends with them, of course, getting the rare peaks into the paparazzifree moments, and that earned him deep respect in the music industry. His images are among the most well-known and beloved. Because of the mutual respect between the celebrities and this special photographer, the images give us genuine insights into the particular moment in time when Rock set up the shot, pressed the camera button, and breathed. A beautiful image requires both vulnerability and intrigue. It has to be relatable, rememberable, remarkable. Rock spent decades perfecting his craft, becoming the best.

Mick Rock Tells the Back Story Behind the Iconic Photo of Madonna One of his top 5 photos, Mick Rock tells the story behind the lens of this famous shot: “This was a curious one. There was a guy called Bleecker Bob who had a store in the West Village called ‘Bleecker Bob’s Golden Oldies.’ In my early years in New York, he would sometimes bring aspiring singers to my studio on Madison Ave. and 32nd. I would take snaps of all of them and [Madonna] came up one summer evening. She seemed very ambitious. I recall her being friendly but mostly curious, just having a look around. I don’t recall her being obnoxious in any way, she was just young. She was curious about Lou Reed and Bowie. Everyone wanted to know about David. This is 1980, so she’d only just about got here. I don’t know if she was even doing music at this time because she came to New York to dance. The shot didn’t take very long, it’s not constructed. I wasn’t telling her, ‘Baby, stick your tongue out’. She did all that. She’d do whatever it takes to get a bit of attention.

C U LT U R E / M U S I C

For years I never thought much of this picture. It’s not one of these apocalyptic shots of her, like I shot of some other people. On the other hand, I see why people like it because she’s so raw. Not in an unpleasant way, there’s nothing wrong with it. I’m very happy to have got this Polaroid now that she’s a big spirit in the sky. I mean, does she rank up there with the big ones? In a way, she does. Not so much for the music but for the way she put herself over. This was at a time in the eighties when it was so unbelievably sexist in music, so you’ve got to respect her. It’s not easy. I don’t think she ever had a drug problem. She was fueled by ambition, god bless her. There’s about another five of these polaroids and I can’t find them. I’ve got to find the rest of them because this is the stuff that people love.” Madonna, PPG Paints Arena, August 7. Ticket information at ppgpaints.com

t’s a classic brand and fragrance known the world over and represented by some of the most celebrated models and actors of our time, among them Marilyn Monroe and Catherine Deneuve. Now, Chanel No5 can boast two native Pittsburgh Pop Artists associated with this iconic brand: Andy Warhol and Burton Morris. Their work appeared side-by-side in Paris recently at the Grand Palais Ephemere.

The sold-out exhibition was a one-month celebration of the iconic Chanel No5 bottle. Morris had three original Chanel No5 bottle paintings hanging alongside six original Andy Warhol Chanel No5 paintings on display. Morris, who is best known for his bold and colorful artworks for the Academy Awards, The Olympics, and the hit TV show “Friends”, traveled with his wife Sara to Paris for the December 2022 exhibit. He said he was especially pleased to see the placement of his work with Warhol’s, who served as a major influence on Morris’ career. The two legendary Pop Artists both grew up in Pittsburgh, both attended Carnegie Mellon University, and their artworks reflect todays pop culture.

sleep in each night. We were virtual before virtual was cool. By giving you and your employees those extra hours in the morning to not have to rush off to anywhere really is a blessing to their mental and physical health.

What are you eating?

Now that I am over 50, it’s a lot easier to not sweat the small stuff. I just don’t take things as hard as I did in my 30s and 40s. I have found some really great leaders to take a lot of the burden off of my shoulders in managing our team. I spend 100% of my time working on the business, while my team works in the business.

Since turning 50, I have spent the last year and a half working on my health. It’s like you’re on the back 9 of a golf course – everything you do from this point forward hits you harder and takes a lot more time to recuperate. With that, I have started to implement a higher protein diet, all while still including carbs to maintain muscle.

Much like the rest of the world, I look to TikTok for unique recipes. As media professionals, we have seen the trend over the last couple of years that consumers are using social media as their search engine of choice.

On the days where I don’t feel like cooking, I subscribe to Factor pre-made meals that make it easy to pop in the microwave after a long day of work. The key to eating healthy is to prep those meals ahead of time, so when you start to feel an energy crash, you can grab something healthy and not make bad choices. Of course, on the weekends, when I’m not as strict, my go-to meals are steak, pizza, and burgers with an occasional red wine. What are you listening to? I love all genres of music, but if I had to pick just one, I would choose country. Pop is my go-to for listening to music when running or exercising. In the car, when I have to drive long distances for work, I listen to business books on Audible because driving can be seen as a waste of time, so I’m maximizing that time to my benefit. I get one book done per month and I’m always looking for ideas of what to listen to next. Currently, I’m listening to The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz. I also like to listen to True Crime podcasts, which Aimee Brown, my VP, Media Strategy got me hooked on. What do you do to maintain a healthy lifestyle? It’s taken me a couple years to actually pull off and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Just like in life, you will continue to fail and then you just have to get on that horse again. This year has been my best year so far in really trying to figure out how food affects my body and my energy. Ask me in three months where I am then, because it takes time and it’s a long term, forever commitment. I strength train with a trainer twice per week and I try to do cardio 2-4 times per week. My husband and I like to jog in North Park and then go grocery shopping on Sundays. Sleep is an important part of work excellence. I definitely work hard, play soft, and get my

Secure Act 2.0: What does this mean for retirement savings? By Christine Robinette, Executive Vice President, Fragasso Financial Advisors Photography provided by: Fragasso Financial Advisors

O

n December 23rd of 2022 Congress, with bi-partisan support, passed the Secure Act 2.0. and President Biden signed it into law on December 29, 2022. This act builds onto the Secure Act of 2019 to continue to expand and incentivize retirement planning. Secure Act 2.0 does not include anything as drastic as “the death of the stretch IRA” for most non spouse beneficiaries, but it is still a mammoth bill. In fact, there are close to 100 changes included in this bill. While we will not review every rule change in this blog, we will review the most impactful to individual investors. This blog will be followed by a more in-depth dive into the company retirement plan changes included in the Secure Act 2.0.

Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) – 1. Before 2020 the RMD age began at 70 ½. Once the initial Secure Act passed, the RMD age was increased to age 72. Now three years later, the RMD age increases again. This time there are two different required minimum distribution start dates depending on when you are born. Please see the chart below: Birth Year

Age at which RMD begins

1950 or earlier

72

1951-1959

73

1960 or later

75

(701/2 for those who turned 70 1/2 proir to 2020)

Source: https://www.kitces.com

2. This act also decreases the penalty for a missed RMD from 50% of the distribution amount down to 25%. The penalty can go as low as 10% if the individual takes the missed RMD and files a corrected tax return in a timely manner. 3. Starting in the year 2024, you will no longer be required to take an RMD from an employer Roth account. This change is to align with the rules for individual Roth IRA’s as you are not required to take RMD’s. Also starting in 2024, if you had started taking required distributions from an employer Roth account you can stop taking them.

Catch-Up Provisions

Other Noteworthy Changes

1. Starting in 2024, IRA catch-up provisions of $1,000 for people 50 and older will be indexed for inflation.

1. Starting in 2023, a Roth Simple or SEP IRA is available. 2. As of 2023, employer contributions can now go into the Roth component of the plan. Keep in mind that these amounts will be included in the employees’ adjustable gross income.

2. Also in 2024, an individual who makes more than $145,000 in wages or more cannot make pretax catch-up contributions to employer retirement plans. They must go into the plan’s Roth component. If the plan does not have a Roth component, catch-up provisions are prohibited for everyone in the plan, no matter what they earn.

3. This year you can now move 72T SEPP (Substantially Equal Periodic Payments) accounts to a new account as long as the original 72T SEPP distribution is taken.

3. Effective in 2025, participants of employer plans from the age of 60-63 can save an additional $10,000 per year or 150% of the regular catch-up amount. The catch-up amount for employees ages 60-63 in a Simple Plan will increase to $5,000 or 150% of the regular catch-up amount.

529 to Roth IRA Transfers Beginning in 2024, 529 plans are eligible to be rolled over directly into a Roth IRA, but there are several stipulations. a. The maximum lifetime transfer per beneficiary is $35,000 but you can only transfer the annual Roth IRA contribution amount per year until it hits $35,000. b.The 529 must have been in existence for fifteen years or more. c. The beneficiary must have earned income. d. You can change beneficiaries on the 529 plan, including to yourself, as a rollover must be like name to like name.

4. In 2024, the Qualified Charitable Distribution will be indexed to inflation. You will also be able to make a separate onetime donation of $50,000 to a CRUT, CRAT or CGA. This cannot be combined with other split interest money, and you can only combine each spouse $50,000 donations. 5. There is a change in post death options for a surviving spouse starting in 2024. The surviving spouse may elect to be treated as the decedent for RMD purposes. Where this can be beneficial is when the deceased spouse is younger. The RMD remains on the uniform RMD table not the single life table. If the surviving spouse dies before RMDs begin, their beneficiaries will be treated as the original beneficiaries. As you can see there are a vast number of changes in the Secure Act 2.0. It can seem daunting to digest so many changes and what year they become effective. Your financial advisor can guide you in understanding which changes pertain to you. Additionally, your financial advisor can help identify opportunities for planning strategies that could prove valuable now and in the future. Kelly Frost launches new non-profit: PEEL: Pittsburgh’s Elevated & Emerging Leaders by Christine McMahon Tumpson

What is the purpose of PEEL? Our purpose is to build others personally, professionally, and to serve our community. We stand strongly on our 4 Pillars that we built PEEL on, Personal Development, Professional Achievement, Playful Purpose and the most important, Philanthropic Endeavors. Why are you passionate about PEEL? I am passionate because I can see, hear and feel the changes it is making to those who are affiliated with it. It is much more than a networking group, which is what I’ve heard it referred to. We are celebrating life. How can you NOT be passionate about that? What are your goals? My goals are always growing with PEEL! We started with 4 Quarterly Charities that we were supporting. We have added our S.A.S (Spontaneous Acts of Service), which is a monthly addition. Then we discovered that many of our members were alone or somber on their birthdays. That is where the Birthday Bashes came into action. We have bi-monthly Birthday Parties to celebrate with them. I’ve been wanting to give back to those seeking additional education or training, and that is why we are launching our Scholarship Program this July. In 2023 we also added our Pillar Events, first is our Women’s Health & Wellness with a concentration on Mental Health and Awareness. It is my opinion that open and authentic conversations regarding Mental Health are a stepping stone to acceptance, awareness, and the elimination of the shame and stigma behind what isn’t understood, and some of the labels that are carelessly thrown around. Women’s Biological and Hormonal Health should also be included in the Mental Health subcategory as well. That is why we will be discussing it as well.

en years ago, Karrah and Marty were both students at Mt. Lebanon High School. Marty was a football player and Karrah was a cheerleader but they didn’t know each other very well. They were friends with each other’s siblings and knew many people in one another’s circles but they never connected. Then, almost two years ago Marty decided to reach out to Karrah’s brother and find out if a high school crush had a shot at being something real.

Almost instantly there was a spark between the two that grew despite their physical distance. Those close to them know they are both strong, caring, and exceptionally witty people, but as a pair they only enriched those qualities in one another. As one does in a post-Covid world, their relationship progressed via facetime dates, long phone calls, and many visits on the roads between Pittsburgh and Peoria. Karrah and Marty were inconvenienced by long-distance dating and professional responsibilities, but it made them that much stronger over almost a year together. Their shared history in Mt. Lebanon built a wonderful foundation and came with a built-in support system from their hometown, but their future is growing from laughter, love, and unconditional support in their relationship. You would be hard pressed to find another couple so connected and considerate of one another. Their marriage will surely only be a glowing representation of the love they built with wonderful communication, shared sense of humor, and dedication to their beliefs and each other.

From relaxing on our spacious, FREE white-sand beaches to exploring our 38-block world-famous boardwalk with three action-packed amusement piers, our resort is ranked as the top East Coast destination for good reason – over 9 million visitors returning annually to vacation in the WIldwoods. The Wildwoods, comprised of Wildwood, North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest, is the southern-most barrier island off the coast in southern New Jersey with over 11,000 room accommodations – including 8,000 hotel and motel rooms, and over 3,000 vacation rentals. Mid-century themed hotels/motels, as well as other businesses, can be seen throughout the island. These hotels reflect their predecessor buildings from the 1950s in architecture, décor, and color – an architectural style known as ‘Doo Wop.’ Plastic palm trees tower over kidney shaped pools, jutted roof angles, and wrought iron balconies, and whimsical names and flamboyant themes give these buildings individual character. Their architecture continues to memorialize the bold spirit of a newly restless society, while motel names conjure up tropical paradises and other exotic destinations.

The Wildwoods free beaches are the perfect spot for swimming, soaking up the sun, and relaxing on a summer day. If you’re like me and enjoy a little adventure, our beaches are a hot spot for surfing, boogie boarding, boating, jet skiing, sailing, kayaking, and paddle-boarding. You can even bring your pooch along for some beach time. There’s a designated dog-friendly beach on Poplar Avenue in Wildwood, where dogs, along with their owners, may enjoy a fun-filled day, sandy paws, and all. Our beaches are also home to numerous events throughout the summer season. In 2023, the National Marbles Tournament will return to celebrate its 100th Anniversary. The tournament is a Wildwoods tradition that attracts Mibsters and their families from across the country, including many from Pittsburgh, to play and compete for national honors, scholarships, and prizes. Also returning to the beach in 2023 is the third annual Barefoot Country Music Fest. A country music fan’s dream, this four-day beach festival will feature Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker, Kid Rock, along with over 40-other country music artists from June 15-18. The Wildwoods hosts over 160 events and festivals throughout the year, many of which are FREE! From Italian and Irish ethnic festivals to vintage car and motorcycle races on the beach, the International Kite Festival, Wildwoods Baby Parade and many more. No other vacation destination offers the variety of events and festivals that the Wildwoods offer. You’ll have something fun to do almost every day and night of the week. One of my favorite spots to spend a summer night with the family is on the world-famous Wildwoods Boardwalk. A true slice of Americana, and famous for being one of the liveliest stretches of

fun and excitement on the East Coast, the Wildwoods Boardwalk offers a pure sensory overload of sights, sounds and smells to visitors, with spectacular amusement piers featuring over 100 amusements, world-class roller coasters, three wet and wild waterparks, carnival-style midway games, flashing arcades, and a myriad of retail shops and eateries. For my family, a visit to the Wildwoods Boardwalk isn’t complete without indulging in delicious boardwalk fare – like hand-tossed pizza, Curley Fries, burgers, freshly made fudge, and oh, those yummy funnel cakes. The Wildwoods’ dining scene has greatly expanded over the past few years. Choose from seafood, Italian cuisine, Continental fare and other favorites served al fresco or indoors, many with waterfront seating. For a more budget-conscious meal, I recommend one of our Doo-Wop diners, complete with retro jukeboxes, futuristic exterior architecture, and black and white checkered floors. If biking is more of your thing, the Wildwoods is famous for its ‘bikeability’. Recharge, exercise, and relish the beautiful shore air and scenery by cruising for a leisurely 12-mile round-trip starting at the southern end of the island along the Dunes Bike Path in Wildwood Crest. Travel along the path up onto the Wildwoods’ 2.5-mile Boardwalk, and through North Wildwood’s Mulberry Bike Path to the North Wildwood Sea Wall. You may also ride along the Wildwoods streets and downtown, with special ‘bike only’ lanes available around the entire island. For additional information about the Wildwoods, NJ visit www. The playfully provocative Lucy Darling is just one character in the arsenal of endlessly talented performer, Carisa Hendrix. Her philosophy? “Why be just one fabulous person when you can be many fabulous people?” With cleverness, magnetism and exceptionally good hair, Lucy breaks all expectations in this character driven exploration of magic and scintillating banter. Her mastery over both subtle sleights and powerful visual magic has made Lucy the most beloved character in stand up magic. Unbelievably hilarious, devastatingly clever, and powerfully magical, Lucy Darling is a rising star and award-winning entertainer featured in the Guinness Book of World Records and Ripley’s Believe It or Not. She is the star of the Super Channel documentary Carisa Hendrix: Girl on Fire, which tells the true story of the struggle to create her Las Vegas magic show. She was voted Stage Magician of the Year at the Magic Castle in 2019. Lucy’s creator, Carisa Hendrix, is a Canada-based touring variety artist known first for the character of Lucy Darling and second for her expertise in fire eating.

Jimmy Ichihana in The Cards Few dare to test the limits of the most versatile prop in the magicians kit as tenaciously as Jimmy Ichihana. In this premier performance Jimmy brings his mastery of math to the art of intricate close up card magic, testing the laws of probability and transcending presumptions. A combination of time honored card classics and original creations, this brand new show uses little more than a deck of cards and a fervor for magic to create lasting memories of the impossible. Jimmy has learned from some of the greatest magicians in the world—having even spent a year in Madrid to study the card techniques of the masters. He’ll use every trick in the book (and several not yet written) to deceive your senses. Innovative sleight of hand, misdirection and more undisclosed trickery will be debuted for the very first time on the Liberty Magic Stage in this interactive celebration of card conjuring and mechanics.

Jon Tai in Road Signs In “Road Signs,” magician and storyteller Jon Tai recasts a quintessential American road trip as a voyage to unearth what dreams are really made of. Come with him on a journey that Sean Collier of Pittsburgh Magazine called a “remarkable” and “moving” experience. Inspired by the Ship of Theseus paradox, this play with magic transports audiences through a time warp and into the wilderness, backlit by lanterns and bonfires, where past and present blur and audience members become primary characters in the evening’s story. “Road Signs” explores questions about personal identity, reinvention, and escape through Tai’s quintessentially human brand of storytelling and magic, which the Chicago Sun-Times calls “beguiling” and “simply astonishing.” Jon Tai is a celebrated magician and storyteller, whose mission is to foster connections between people through shared moments of astonishment. He performs magic across the country and around the world, in person and virtually, and has called the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Liberty Magic Theater his home base since its grand opening in early 2019. He is best known for having co-created and starred in “Missed Connections” Off-Broadway at 59E59 Theaters in New York City, following its premiere at Chicago’s MacArthur Award-winning A Red Orchid Theatre. Jon is a ten-year veteran of the medical software industry and is proud to support several health and human services nonprofit organizations through his magic including Hello Neighbor, the Cancer Caring Center, Beverly’s Birthdays, and Pace Schools. A graduate of Cornell University with a degree in Psychology, he lives with his wife Kate and tiny dog Nina in the Troy Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Messado’s School of Magic for the Young and Young at Heart Forget everything you know about magicians pulling rabbits out of top hats. Mr. Messado brings a fresh new take on the age-old art of prestidigitation. Join superstar magician Mr. Messado for his new astonishing play designed exclusively for Liberty Magic. Time tested through thousands of performances at appearances around the world, schools, company events, private parties and more, Mr. Messado’s Magic School for the Young and Young at Heart will have both teens AND adults amazed from start to finish! This 60-minute spectacular, featuring a combination of stunning magic and clean comedy, is full of interactive wonder. Whether it be shouting the magic words from the comfort of your seats or by coming up on stage to be trained as a magical assistant, every member of your party will actively participate throughout the show. Mr. Messado’s story begins on

the TV screen of his grandmother’s Philadelphia living room where global stars like Michael Jackson and David Copperfield ignited a love for entertainment and storytelling. In this deeply personal, hilarious and engaging performance you’ll get to know the mister behind the magic, the rabble-rousing raconteur behind the cape, the magic mentor who is Mr. Messado. This unique family friendly matinee takes place each Sunday at Liberty Magic, our one-of-a-kind intimate speakeasy with only 67 seats in 4 rows, typically reserved only for adults. Mr. Messado’s Magic School for the Young and Young at Heart is recommended for ages 13+. Little brothers and sisters 6 years and older can tag along. No tattletales, snitches, or cheats. FAQ: Age Requirements. We have found that kids 5 years of age and under won’t understand most of what is happening in this sophisticated magical play, and will probably start to wiggle in their seats because they don’t have the attention span to sit and watch

Eric Jones in Immaculate Deception In December of 1972 something magical happened at Three Rivers Stadium. To this day spectators are unsure just how it transpired. Through some combination of skill, chance and miracle Steelers fullback, Franco Harris, recovered a fumbled ball and pulled the team from the depths of sure defeat, scoring a game-winning touchdown with 30 seconds on the clock. One of the greatest plays of all time – The Immaculate Reception. Drawing inspiration from our city’s history of miraculous moments, Eric Jones, Liberty Magic’s Inaugural Magician and Artistic Advisor, returns to the Liberty Magic stage for a third residency to bring us a brand new show. Featuring perplexing prestidigitation created with Pittsburgh in mind, this premier production is sure to amaze and inspire. Don’t take your eye off the ball… or the card… or the coin… You just might catch The Immaculate Deception.

Greer Cabaret Theater The reimagined Greer Cabaret Theater, Greer Lounge, and Theater Square Box Office will elevate the guest experience with intimate cabaret performances, relaxed acoustic performances in the lounge, and an expanded food and drink menu. 937 Liberty Avenue When the building opens later this year, it will include a fully outfitted 100-seat theater on the first floor, a gallery on the second floor, and a 50-seat flex space/rehearsal stage/artist’s studio on the third floor. The Trust plans to provide the technical and physical resources to artists and small arts organizations utilizing the space so they can focus on creating and producing work. The building’s interior was renovated over the last summer to improve its accessibility and safety. In addition, the first-floor theater will be named the Peirce Theater in honor of Joan and Bob Peirce, who have significantly contributed to the Trust’s Building on the Dream Capital Campaign.

Beauford add that the exhibition is about “the war being waged on the human soul through social division, police brutality, global wars, climate change, gentrification, broken relationships, and communities.” This is Pesci’s first solo exhibition. The first- and third-floor spaces will be ready for use later this year with participating arts organizations still to be announced. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust transformed a red-light district Downtown into a global destination. Founded in 1984, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust revitalized a 14-block arts and entertainment/residential neighborhood called the Cultural District; one of the country’s largest land masses “curated” by a single nonprofit arts organization. Thanks to the support of foundations, corporations, government agencies and thousands of private citizens, the Trust maintains a Charity Navigator Four-Star Rating and stands as a national model of urban redevelopment through the arts.

owntown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District has come a long way since the depths of the ’70s and ’80s when it was Pittsburgh’s unofficial red-light district. And from its inception in 1984, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has led the way in one of the nation’s most prominent comeback stories. Now, as the bustling neighborhood of theaters, galleries, restaurants, and shops recovers from perhaps its biggest challenge – the pandemic – the Cultural Trust is making substantial new investments in several strategic properties in the neighborhood.

“These projects are just the first improvements that people will see in the Cultural District over the next few years thanks to the success of our Trust: Building on the Dream Capital Campaign,” said Nick Gigante, the Trust’s Senior Vice President of Development and Real Estate. “The generosity of our donors will allow the Trust to continue our mission of using the arts as an economic generator and lead the revitalization of downtown as an arts and culture destination and an attractive neighborhood for residents, businesses, visitors, and workers.” The Trust: Building on the Dream Campaign exceeded its initial goal of raising $150 million over three years and has brought in $175 million in gifts, pledges, planned gifts, and endowments. For more information on the Campaign, visit TrustArts.org/Dream.
