Jickling’s Jabberings with Peter Jickling

Neck Deep in Nostalgia I am, by nature, a sentimental son of a gun. I wear old shirts until they are threadbare because they remind me of certain times, places, and people; I listen to old songs just to feel wistful; I cloak the past in a golden sheen. I sometimes even catch myself feeling tender about the most strife-filled periods of my life. So if I get nostalgic for the bad times, imagine how schmaltzy I get when remembering the good years. My good years are epitomized by my time in post-secondary education; I lived a charmed existence at the University of Lethbridge from 2000 to 2005. Although many college experiences differ from mine, my time at the U of L was characterized by an immersion into all the freedoms of adulthood, with none of the responsibilities. I ate what I wanted, drank what I wanted, stayed up as late as I wanted, and deliberately chose classes in time-blocks that would not interfere with my hedonism. My only obligation was to pass all my classes, which was easy, because I usually found the subject matter interesting. I also got to come back to the Yukon every summer, where I reconnected with my old high school friends and continued an indulgent lifestyle. And to top it all off, whenever I ran into friends of my parents, or people who had known me since I was an infant, I would receive hearty handshakes, and earnest well-wishings. “You’re in school down south? Good for you son,” they might say. Not only was I not being reprimanded for my debauchery, I was being actively encouraged and congratulated. What fun. But such eras inevitably come to an end, and now I am left with my memories and lasting friendships. I was not thinking about my college years when I visited my mom for dinner the other night,

on campus. Though the image has faded with time, my wide-eyed innocence and semi-mullet hairdo still shine through. My picture on the nightclub card was taken a few years later, when I had even managed to get laid a few times. I’m wearing a toga (clichéd, I know) and my grin is the grin of a cocky kid who thought he had life figured out. Point of clarification: boy, was I wrong. I probably hadn’t seen either of these cards in seven years, so I sat on a stool in the kitchen, holding them tight and feeling neck deep in nostalgia. And yet, I don’t want to go back to being who I was; I’m thankful that I make a living as a wordsmith, but the boy in these pictures wasn’t a writer because he had nothing worth writing about. As grateful as I am for those grand years, I’m also grateful that I grew up, got miserable, and lived to tell the tale.

Waiting for Snow

n the summer, biathlon training consists of learning to shoot precisely—because there’s no snow, so skiing’s not an option, and it sucks learning the technical aspects of shooting a rifle in the freezing cold. Right now, on the grey shoulders between summer and winter, kids train by running or biking the trails around the biathlon range off Grey Mountain Road, to get their heart rates up before target practice. It’s important for their hearts to be beating hard when they shoot; if they get used to shooting with a non-elevated heart rate, they won’t know how to shoot in a race. Control over ones heart rate and breath is an integral part of biathlon. During a training session in mid-October, ten of the older athletes — between 12 and 17-years-olds — run or bike up to the gun range in a scraggly pack. They adjust their rifles — which means zeroing them in on a target for maximum precision and accuracy — then take off to run another loop of trail. Two of the more serious athletes return first, red-faced but methodical. They take their rifles off the rack, sling them on their backs and walk the two metres to their shooting spots. They unhook the rifles from their shoulders and sprawl, with legs spread wide, on their stomachs, and both clean their targets — they hit all five of them. The targets are around the size of a toonie. They take off running again. They practice elevating their heart rates, then slowing them as they round the bend to the range. The other, less competitive and younger, athletes return and fol-

low the same routine. It’s a good sport because the athletes can decide how competitive they want to be. Dennis Peters is the “organizing coach, I guess”. He is one of five coaches monitoring the training session. He says some kids push themselves; some do it more for fun. He says it’s a good team: “the kids really like each other.” Which is important, because the biathletes train all year long — in the summer, to hone the aforementioned gun skills, and two-to-three times a week, now. When the snow flies, it’ll be four times a week.

than skiing, but she loves pretty much everything about biathlon “apart from single-loading shots when it’s freezing.” A lot of the athletes are home-schooled kids, so Marnik gets to meet and be friends with people she wouldn’t otherwise know. Her non-biathlete friends tell her

Emma Marnik is 12; she’s been hooked since her first day on the range. It was an open house, like the one the club held on Oct. 19. It was a challenge, that’s what drew her in. She wasn’t good at shooting. Plus, “it was such a beautiful day.” She was eight. Now, Marnik likes shooting more

she must be a really nice person, because she gets to take out anger by shooting guns all the time. Bill Curtis is another coach. His daughter was a biathlete, but she’s in university now. Curtis stuck around; he says it’s a great community. He says not to tell anyone, “you can’t see it now because it’s cloudy,” he says, and gestures broadly at the horizon, “but imagine the view when it’s clear.” He says coming to the range is like entering another world, one that not too many people know about. He says hitting a target brings instant gratification. A kid can look at it and say, “I just did that”. There has been some sort of biathlon organization in Whitehorse for around 25 years, and the number of biathletes ebbs and flows.

Now the tide is high — there are 20 athletes. Four years ago there were six. Peters says it’s fun for the kids. At the last Arctic Winter Games, the Yukon was the only team besides the Russians to win medals in the sport. This winter, some of the older biathletes will race in Canmore, Whistler, and Prince George. The first race is in November. A lack of snow can put a damper on training. Peters indicates a distance of about a foot with his hands to show how much snow the kids need to train on — they’ll use rock skis until it gets deeper than that. It’s All About the Candy by Jason Westover

O

ur little apartment in Old Crow is in full Halloween mode; my mom mailed up decorations, and our crib is sporting the spooky colours, orange and black. It’s the first year that our daughter Emily is kind of grasping the concept of taking candy from strangers. The last two years, I basically made her my personal candy magnet; I’d knock on someone’s door, say “trick or treat”, and hide behind her using her as a little human puppet. It was an ingenious way to trickor-treat again and I milked it for all it’s worth. Emily got a few treats and I was guaranteed a trip to the dentist. Today she’s almost three and I feel that if I get in the way of her candy haul or so much as enter the same room as her “booty”, she will give me that unwarranted stink-eye of hers and send me on my way. But it’s cool; I know the rules when it comes to safeguarding a boatload of sugary treats. This year Emily’s going as Curious George. I laugh because the costume has a hood with Curious George’s head on top, so when

Did Emily skin poor Curious George? she wears it, it looks more like she skinned poor George and is wearing his body. Word on the street is that Old Crow goes all-out on Halloween and I’m excited to see how much delicious candy Emily can bring

in. Despite being an isolated community with few in-town choices for candy and decorations, I know that Old Crow’s going to pay off because of its rural community roots; it’s no secret that the small country towns always have better Halloween payouts than larger cities. I know this from experience because I come from a small country town in Quebec. When I was young, way back in the ‘80s, my sister and I literally collected

with the prospect of a super-haul in a larger domain; why hit houses hereand-there when you have whole blocks of homes and apartments? It’s all about the candy! My bubble promptly burst around the fifth house when my pillowcase contained nothing more than a few rockets, some caramel squares, and that Godawful candy corn. Even my hallowed UNICEF box only contained a few measly pennies. I should have been tipped off when I saw that all these kids were carrying in terms of candy receptacles were tiny pumpkin baskets, but I was blinded with candy lust. Whitehorse is a different breed; it is in essence a small city with a PHOTO: Jason Westover large town feel. It would be fun to see which borough is the candy king. Phil’s Tire Tips

When was the last time YOU ROTATED YOUR TIRES?

Check the facts. Get the shot. yukonimmunization.ca/flu Get the flu vaccine at a clinic near you.

Studies have shown that by performing a regular rotation every 8 - 10,000kms the life of your tires is significantly increased, in most cases by up to 25%. Other factors such as driving style, application and tire pressure will also affect tread life. Failure to regularly perform rotations has proven to cause several different abnormal wear patterns such as diagonal, accelerated and uneven wear. The common rule for rotations is to move the drive axle tires straight forward or back depending on the vehicle and the free rolling axle should be crossed.

Thin Ice

When you are on thin ice you have to think twice. If you make one mistake you can fall in the lake. If you fall in the water you have to swim like an otter. Thin ice will make you scream if you fall in a cold stream. you want things to go nice but it’s dangerous on thin ice. Sometimes you get a second chance

but you can still wet your pants. Even if you’re up to your knees it won’t take long to freeze. If you fall in the river I guarantee you will shiver. At any minute or hour you can have a cold shower. When the ice is thin you’ll wish for a fish fin. When you are on thin ice you can pay a big price.

Teaching-and-working farm in the works by Gabriela Sgaga

here is an exciting new project underway near Dawson City. On September 19, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in (TH) and Yukon College to create a framework for the development of a teaching-and-working farm located in TH traditional territory. The project’s impetus is to secure a source of fresh produce in a sustainable way, and to create a healthy, healing, safe, and rewarding “on-the-land” environment for all TH citizens. “TH has had a dream for a long time to get back to traditional pursuits on the land,” says Dexter MacRae, director of human resources and community training. “They want to preserve a way of life that is based on an economic and spiritual relationship with the land.” After initial brainstorming, TH approached the college to form a partnership, believing the college could help develop and research innovative approaches to yearround northern Yukon farming, as well as provide a program where TH students could learn in an “onthe-land classroom”. Deborah Bartlette, Yukon College’s vice president, academic and student services, was excited when TH came to the college with the idea. “They had land in its natural state and ideas on how to use it,” says Bartlette. “We are happy to be able to support TH in whatever way we can.” After the initial approach, the college met with TH Chief and council in Dawson City, and went out to look at the proposed site. Known as Strachan’s Farm, a former working farm from the early 1900s, it is located opposite the airport on the North Klondike Highway, 15 km outside of Dawson City. The memorandum of understanding was then drafted and signed.

Check it out. It’s New. Both TH and the college have agreed to work together to develop an initial design and layout of the farm. They will also develop programming aimed at meeting the educational and training needs of the First Nation, look into environmentally responsible agricultural practices, support the return of indigenous plants and shrubs important to the sustenance and healing traditions TH, promote a source of training opportunity for trades skills development, and develop plans for selling excess products to the general public as a source of revenue and sustainability for the farm. Meanwhile, the college will add its support by evaluating available energy sources including geo-thermal power, exploring work-experience opportunities for college students, supporting on-the-land “live-on-site” agriculture, and engaging other partners in the project who have valuable experience. Both TH and the college hope to leave a positive legacy for future agricultural education opportunities for TH and other Yukon First Nations. Although there is much excitement both within the college and

the TH community, both Bartlette and MacRae agree things won’t happen overnight. “The land is in its natural state and will take some work,” says Bartlette. “We’re planning to start smallscale by preparing the land in the spring of 2015 and planting some root vegetables,” says MacRae. “In the summer of 2016, we hope to build and operate a yearround greenhouse.” However, at the moment, acquiring funding is the priority. “The Prime Minister has announced new funding for a Northern greenhouse initiative,” MacRae says. “Right now, we’re putting in an application so that we can do soil testing to determine what we can grow, as well as a feasibility study to see what will work best.” After submitting the application, MacRae says the next step will be the formation of a steering committee to add scope and depth to the project, for both initial and long-term development. Next, working groups will be formed comprising local farmers, TH citizens, and other experts who will make an operating plan, including what to plant, how to

Strachan’s Farm plant it, how to keep the farm secure, and how to make everything sustainable. Future plans include building farm-hand bunkhouses, a teaching building for college research and agriculture departments, as well as incorporating animal husbandry and fodder into the program. “The possibilities are endless,” says MacRae. “We want to be traditional, organic, and building for the future.”

Writing with the Ultimate Deadline Writer publishes personal story as she fights ALS

O

n October 8, Alicia Priest launched her first published book, A Rock Fell on the Moon: Dad and the Great Yukon Silver Ore Heist at Baked, on Main Street. Every chair was occupied; people were standing everywhere, even at the entrance, to glimpse her. Priest is diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and is not able to speak, but her eyes said it all: she was blown away by the Yukoners who appeared for the book launch. As her husband, Ben Parfitt, started reading a chapter of the book, listeners were transported to life in the mining town of Elsa, where Priest grew up in the 1950s. The book starts with the personal history of the Priest family — the story of her parents, who had different personalities, like day and night. Priest describes her idyllic childhood in Elsa with loving parents, an older sister, and a friendly environment. The harmonious picture was suddenly destroyed when the family moved to East Vancouver and Priest realized there was something wrong. When her father, Gerry Priest’s, name appeared in a Vancouver paper, Alicia knew enough to keep her mouth shut. In 1962, her father bought the remote Moon claims, which had sparked interest in miners for years. In 1963, over $160,000 worth of ore was stolen from the second richest silver mine in Canada. The ore heist is one of the biggest crimes in Yukon History. In her press kit, Priest says her father’s high-profile trials over the stolen ore and his time in prison turned their family life upside-down, and inside-out. “It took me decades to get over it,” Priest says. “It broke my heart.” Her father never admitted his guilt to the public, or to his own daughter. Priest had to

learn that her father had two sides: the loving father and the man convicted of the great ore heist. But, after ignoring aspects of her past for years, Priest became curious about what happened, and she realized that she had, “a darn good yarn to tell.” In 2009, Priest and her sister returned to the Yukon for their first visit since leaving in 1963. “It was very sad,” Priest writes in an email. “My hometown didn’t exist anymore. We broke into the Elsa schoolhouse and scrawled our names on the blackboard, like so many former Elsa students.” In 2011, Priest visited the remains of Elsa again, and the distant Moon silver claims. In 2012, she started writing the book, facing “the ultimate deadline”, as her husband said at the book launch, because of her disease. Priest wrote for 14 months, while she was still able to do so. A Rock Fell on the Moon is a haunting memoir, which proves sometimes life writes the most heartbreaking stories. A Rock Fell on the Moon is available at local bookstores.

Elizabeth and her family, rafting on the Porcupine River

M

any times my husband, Joseph, and another person would cut firewood for home. When the river water comes up, a raft is quickly made, and slowly driven. The boat goes down to Old Crow. This year wood was cut in March. Joseph does janitorial work at Chief Zzheh Gittlit School; this year he had two weeks off. As a family we quickly prepared our gear and headed up the Porcupine River to Blue Bluff. Blue Bluff is about 45 to 50 miles away, and takes about two to three hours by boat. We left Old Crow with three adults, five dogs, and our essentials for camp. What a trip! It was so relaxing to be able to sit and do nothing, only keep the dogs quiet. Once we were all settled in at camp, Joseph made many attempts to hunt. He managed to get three bull caribou. During our two weeks out we had rain, gusty

wind, hail, and snow. We still did what our goals were to do. The water level was coming up and Joseph quickly made a raft. He had help along the way and was already to raft the next day. To our surprise the water dropped. The skidoos, the sleigh, garbage, dog pots, etc, which were loaded onto the raft, had to come off and be replaced with some wood. What a job! But we stayed positive, and as a family we helped each other. We finally did it. The raft was now in deeper water, so it was time to reload it. Finally we were ready to go. How exciting! We sat comfortably in the boat, which was now pushing the raft. Gavin, our grandson, relieved Joseph at the steering wheel and he was a pro! I’m so proud of him. We dried the fowls while on the river, and on the shores of the Porcupine River, we saw hunters having fire, watching for caribou. Joseph told us of good hunting areas

for moose, and where caribou usually cross. We pass many camps along the river, people in boats slowed down as they passed us, what an honoured respect. Mahse! My grandson learned what he needs to know when boating the Porcupine River. Rafting is slow but we were prepared, so it was time to relax and enjoy our prepared lunch. On the day we were rafting, amazingly the sky was a clear summer day, and there was no wind. What a blessing! We arrived in Old Crow at 10:00 p.m on September 8, 2014. It took eight hours. As a wife, a mother, grandma and friend to many I think it’s a wonderful experience to be patient as the man of the house plans for winter for his family, and works his job to the best of his abilities. So we won’t need wood in the middle of January when Old Crow is cold and stormy. Elizabeth Kaye is an elder who lives in Old Crow.

The Victims of Halloween

by Glenda Koh

A

s Halloween draws near, let’s honour the many victims of Halloween. First, there are the 139 victims of Michael Myers, the villain of 10 Halloween movies, including sequels and remakes. Rest in peace, screen people, and especially you Jamie Lee Curtis, aka Laurie Strode; you were there from the beginning. There are also the long-suffering parents, agonizing to make, purchase, borrow, or assemble the perfect costume for their spawn. That same costume will be cast off 30 minutes into the school day when the child realizes the limitations of wearing an entire string of LED lights to gym class. And then, there is the true victim of Halloween: the noble pumpkin; it sacrifices again and again, nary a tear falling from its triangle eyes. Such a majestic vegetable has sadly become the object of gleeful smashing. The same organism that gives us luscious pumpkin pies is routinely disemboweled and left to rot and freeze on front porches across the continent. Oh, the carnage. The environmental cost of jack o’ lanterns must be staggering. If I were a brighter person (rather than the dim light casting shadows on Halloween’s gaiety year-

ing, letting precious fossil-fueled heat escape; I’ll leave a box outside the door and invite children to provide a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) in which they’ll receive a treat from me in approximately four to six weeks. I could single-handedly resolve the mail delivery issue in Yukon. Speaking of treats, we don’t need high fructose corn syrup flowing into the sanctity of our Northern land. I will give out only local bounty such as Labrador tea and dried mushrooms from the boreal forest; such delights for small children. And finally, I will toil to save millions of kilojoules of nutritious pumpkin from ending up in the landfill. Instead of carving pumpkins, I’ll use a locally-sourced vegetable for my jack o’ lantern: the mighty Yukon carrot. Be it resolved, the carrot will hereafter be PHOTO: Glenda Koh known as the Pumpkin of the North. n a cool Monday evening at the Old Crow Community Hall, up-and-coming country musicians Carli and Julie Kennedy played the last show of their first Yukon tour. The twin sisters were here courtesy of Home Routes, a Winnipeg-based company that arranges tours for folkbased musicians to venues and homes around Canada. Having spent nearly two weeks on tour in the Yukon, you would think the duo would show signs of fatigue. If so, they hid it well. In Old Crow they spent time with the students at the Chief Zzeh Gittlit School, and members of the community; they even had a sit down sing-along with the children before their concert. It’s obvious the musicians are enamoured with the Yukon: “Everyone in the North is so warm and welcoming,” says Julie. “There’s a lot of support and appreciation.” Carli added, “I didn’t expect a lot of the hosts would show us around the community.” No wonder Yukoners took them in; Carli and Julie are easy to like. They exude a quiet confidence and passion about their music. Originally from Powell River,

B.C., music was in their blood. They began playing piano at five, followed by violin and guitar a few years later. They cut their teeth performing with family at festivals, fairs, and local events. The twins’ love of music eventually led them to enrol in, and receive, their music performance bachelors at the University of Victoria. Today the sisters blend their classical and country talents, creating a fresh performance for their fans. “We’re country artists, but we always want to include our classical roots; we had a few songs that are classical to country and our shows are 95 per cent our own,” says Carli. “Our classical stuff comes in and one of our fans will go, ‘Oh. That’s cool.’ It broadens their horizons, and creates something that’s fun and memorable for all ages.” On this tour, the twins performed in Watson Lake, Craig Lake, Atlin B.C., Whitehorse, Dawson, Mayo, and Old Crow. Many venues were ‘home shows’, and the twins met Yukoners personally. “With house concerts, you’re in smaller place; you can meet one on one,” says Julie. “We’ve been playing a lot of festivals and intim-

ate venues. It’s exceptional in the Yukon.” “We used to have all these family nights, so playing in your living room feels like home,” adds Carli. “Everyone who comes is so supportive — how can you not have a fun night?” The twins would love to perform in one of the Yukon’s many music festivals. For future fans of their energetic music, they say this: “There’s nothing made up in our show, we’re going to have funny and heartfelt moments. Look at artists who are largely successful — they are singing songs, many of which they wrote — they are 100 per cent real. We’re lucky to be getting to do what we want to do, and our family is very supportive. We have a fan base that keeps us going and it invigorates you.” Carli and Julie Kennedy’s first single comes out this January, followed by an album in March and an across Canada release tour. For more information about the twins’ unique style, music, and tour dates check out cjkennedy.com. Jason Westover is an Old Crowbased writer. Contact him via editor@whatsupyukon.com.

It was a late July, 2014, almost exactly a year after her memorial, or, “going away party”, as she hailed it. I pulled out the flat, round, ceramic piece, which looked like a patterned cookie, and held it in my hand. Under glorious sun, I surveyed the stony shoreline and calm waters of Stewart River. This

spot, off the Klondike Highway and linked to the Yukon River, was the perfect confluence of history, adventure, and wilderness — all of which Janet had loved. I knew this was the spot. Although we had come to the Yukon from British Columbia for my niece Julia’s wedding, I was now about to fulfill a personal mission, a friend’s request. An avid traveller, Janet died of cancer at 55, before she could visit all the intriguing places that still awaited her. But death wasn’t going to slow her down; she was

determined to keep globetrotting even after she was gone. And indeed she has, thanks to dozens of these ceramic forms, made by a friend. Each one contains some of Janet’s ashes, baked like sacred flour in a kiln. I picked up the “cookie” at the end of Janet’s memorial, after rows of attendees had sung along, with glowing light sticks held aloft in church, to a YouTube clip of Monty Python’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. Janet planned the proceedings before she died, including the bowl of ceramic pieces that sat on a table next to the guest register. Beside the bowl was a sheet of paper; everyone who took a clay memento of Janet was to list where they were going to “take her” on holiday.

Originally, I wrote “Cuba”, but later considered possible restrictions transporting human remains across international borders. Besides, I imagined explaining, in broken Spanish, to a dubious official in a beret and army fatigues, that this item contained a special powder that was worth a lot to me. I then planned to bury the cookie while visiting Dawson City, somewhere between the cabins of Robert Service and Jack London. A long-time freelance writer, Janet would have loved to remain forever in this hallowed literary company, where she’d settle into the same ground that young Pierre Berton roamed and romped. But as an author, world traveller, and freelance writer myself, I was so inspired by the photos and

stories in the Jack London Museum — White Fang and The Call of the Wild fuelled my own young desires for adventure — that I completely forgot about Janet. I hope she’ll forgive me. Instead a small part of her lies at the bottom of the Stewart River. Rest in peace, and pieces, Janet. I know that you’ll enjoy your time in this rugged land of gold seekers and storytellers. Maybe you’ll pick up a yarn or two. Like the ever-flowing current, keep chucklin’.
