The Available Light Film Festival returns February 8 to 18, featuring 44 feature films, five mid-length films and 35 short films

T

his year marks the 22nd annual edition of The Yukon Film Society’s (YFS) Available Light Film Festival (ALFF), taking place February 8 to 18, at the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC) and Yukon Theatre. This year’s festival program includes 44 feature films, five mid-length films and 35 short films. The 10-day festival run will also host live music and other performing arts events. “From Hollywood movies to renowned international films and indie films from emerging filmmakers, ALFF ’24 has something for everyone,” commented Andrew Connors, festival director. “For the first time since 2020, we’re returning to the Yukon Arts Centre—taking over the territory’s largest screen for ten full days.” Some of the feature films to be shown at this year’s ALFF are American Fiction, La Chimera,

The mystery-thriller is set in a small idyllic island village where a child with mysterious powers washes up on the shore, sparking a chain of events that sees the community plunge into a civil war, with those who believe the child is the next saviour opposing those who do not. “We have an outstanding lineup of shorts, feature-length and documentary films from across Canada, Turtle Island, and the world—screening at the festival this year,” said Connors, “Our team has programmed the best selection of films, to date, from diverse filmmakers, including Indigenous, BIPOC and queer direc-

Losing Blue is a cinematic poem about what it means to lose the otherworldly blues of ancient mountain lakes, now fading due to climate change. Alberta filmmaker Leanne Allison, best known to Yukon audiences for her award-winning feature-length NFB documentary Being Caribou (2004), in which she follows a herd of 120,000 caribou across 1,500 km of Arctic tundra, will attend the screening.

Off Cuts Year: 2022 Genre:

Electronic Pop

rou Frou is an electronic music duo renowned for their distinctive fusion of ethereal and experimental soundscapes The duo comprises English singer-songwriter Imogen Heap and producer Guy Sigsworth. Their music is characterized by Imogen Heap’s captivating vocals and Guy Sigsworth’s intricate production as a musician who previously served as the keyboard player and music director for Björk. Together, they craft a dreamy and atmospheric musical experience. Off Cuts, the latest EP from the British duo, Frou Frou, represents a collection of reworked old demos with a contemporary production that is nothing short of amazing. The album weaves together exquisite soundscapes, built from layers of synths and vocal arrangements. Notably, “Guitar Song” stands out as a remarkable element within the record, as it consists of just two

components—guitars and vocals— and provides a refreshing and introspective pause in the album. My personal favorite from the EP is “Sane Again,” which masterfully incorporates various elements, including a Japanese instrument (koto) and subtle distortions in the chorus. Though I had heard of Frou Frou, before, I must confess that I had never listened to any of their work until now, and I must say I am genuinely surprised! The transformation of old demos into a stunning collection of soundscapes, orchestrated by Sigsworth, employing numerous layers of synthesizers and other unique elements, such as electrical wire sounds, whistles and even the nostalgic sound of an old internet modem, is a testament to their artistry. If you are a fan of alternative pop, this album is a must-listen! Overall Rating: 9/10 n

AUSTRIAN-STYLE FRANKFURTER AND BACON DUMPLINGS (A.K.A. FLEISCHKNÖDEL)

Meat filling

Boiled potatoes

Potato dough

Filled dumplings

T

raditionally, these would not be filled with hot dogs, but something more like kielbasa. Honestly, this little change really ups the flavour and texture of the filling in a very satisfying way. If you’re feeling like having “a bit extra,” try coating these dumplings with breadcrumbs and frying them. Makes 8 dumplings.

Be sure the dumplings are fully sealed or they will explode when you boil them!

INGREDIENTS ❑ 2 cups chopped thick-cut bacon

❑ 1 onion, finely chopped ❑ 4 hot dogs, finely chopped ❑ 6 russet potatoes (all around the same medium size)

❑ Salt and pepper, to taste ❑ 1/2 cup all-purpose flour ❑ 2 egg yolks

Fleischknödel

METHOD

1. In a skillet, cook the bacon over medium-high heat. When the bacon fat starts to render, add the onions; and when they start to soften, add the hot dogs. Cook until bacon begins to brown and onions are very soft and sweet, about 15 minutes. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper. 2. Poke holes in all of the potatoes with a fork, then microwave on high until soft, about 8 to 10 minutes. Allow to cool slightly, then carefully peel the skin off the potatoes. Mash the potatoes onto a cutting board with a fork, then sprinkle with flour and sea-

son with salt. 3. Top with egg yolks. Then, using a fork, gently work the potato into the flour and yolk until a soft dough forms. 4. Divide dough into 8 equal portions. Using your hands, press a portion into a round and then fill the round with the meat filling and pinch closed. Repeat with remaining dough and filling. 5. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. When boiling, add the dumplings and cook for 4 minutes. Remove and serve with sauerkraut and mustard. n

Miche Genest is a Whitehorse-based chef and writer. She is also somewhat of a gardener. Miche has also written two books: The Boreal Feast: A Culinary Journey Through The North and The Boreal Gourmet: Adventures In Northern Cooking.

ENJOYING THE FRUITS OF FORAGING One of the joys of foraging is labelling the packages of berries, herbs or mushrooms with the place and date that you harvested them

T

hen, when you pull them out in winter, to fashion some delicious dish, the stories come tumbling out. “Remember visiting the mushroom camp and talking to those two young Ontarians in the camper van? What a time they were having!” “Did we find anything on the left side of the road that morning?” “Yeah, yeah, we went all the way down the hill to the valley at the bottom, and then on the way up we kept seeing little colonies; first one mushroom, then ten, then twenty.” “Yeah, it’s a matter of training your eye and having faith. Not giving up when you don’t see one right away.” A pause for silent reverie, as we remember the look and feel of the forest floor—the dirt, the ash, the charged and tangled tree trunks, the hollows—and the sudden tiny leap of the heart when we spied a colony. “Is it too soon to look at last year’s fire maps?” “Never too soon! Another of the joys of foraging is in the cooking—building a recipe around the ingredient you worked so hard to bring home. I like this recipe because it combines wild, foraged morels with a new favourite ingredient—frozen peas. Skyrocketing vegetable prices have led me to rediscover the frozen-food section of the grocery store. Vegetables frozen at the peak of freshness are sometimes a better source of nutrition than their fresh counterparts (especially in winter), and they’re often cheaper. You’ll notice in the photograph that the pasta is not penne but, rather, fusilli pugliesi, made by a company called David Rocco— one of the more fun pasta shapes available from time to time on lo-

Another of the joys of foraging is in the cooking cal shelves. But penne will do just fine in this quick, easy supper that is suitable for a weeknight OR a fancy Saturday night meal with friends. PENNE PASTA with Petits Pois, Morel and Tarragon Cream Sauce Generally, we sort our morel harvest into large, medium, medium-small and small sizes for storage. This recipe is good for the small to medium-small morels; you can just leave them whole, giving everyone several good meaty bites of mushroom. One ounce of dried becomes anywhere from 3 to 4 four ounces when reconstituted.

INGREDIENTS • 400 g dried penne pasta • 1 cup dried morel mushrooms (about 1 oz) • 1 cup boiling water • 1 Tbsp olive oil • 1 Tbsp butter • 1 medium onion, chopped finely • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 Tbsp dried tarragon • 2 cups 35% cream • 1 1/4 cups frozen petits pois • 2 Tbsp sherry or Marsala • Salt and pepper, to taste • Parmesan cheese and fresh herbs, for garnish METHOD 1. Put pasta water on to boil in a large pot. Once water boils, add penne, stir, cover, reduce

heat to medium-low and cook according to package directions. 2. Soak morel mushrooms in boiling water for 15 minutes, until softened. Squeeze out excess liquid, saving the liquid. Reserve the mushrooms in a separate bowl. 3. Heat butter and oil in a medium cast-iron frying pan over medium heat. Once melted and bubbling, add onion. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, until softened and translucent. 4. Add garlic and sauté another 2 minutes. Stir in tarragon. 5. Add morels to the garlic and onions and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Add soaking liquid to the pan, turn the heat to

medium-high and cook rapidly until all the water has evaporated. 6. Add cream to the pan, leaving the heat at medium-high. Once cream is bubbling, add petits pois. Cook for another 4 to 5 minutes, until the cream has thickened slightly. 7. At the very end, stir in sherry. Add salt and pepper, to taste. 8. Drain pasta and divide between four bowls. T

he last 60 years of Rendezvous has seen many changes, be it the events, weather or the people. But, overall, the festival has consistently brought the community together, during times of darkness and cold, with colour and lasting memories. Back in 1945, when the Winter Carnival (as Rendezvous was then Tide called) wasThe firstKing introduced, it was overseen by the All Union Committee. It was known as “an elaborate program of winter sports in which professionals and amateur sports enthusiasts of the U.S., Alaska and Canada will participate” (yukonrendezvous.com/history). Little did anyone know it would evolve into the world-renowned Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Festival (better known as the Yukon Rendezvous Festival in 2021) and would expand to include outlandish competitions, characters and events. The festival competitions have consisted of log tossing, the swede saw competition, cabin building, ax throwing, chainsaw chucking and bathtub races—and all of this on the riverfront downtown. It moved to Main Street for a good portion of the late ’80s and early ’90s, and in 2008, the festival moved to Shipyards Park, where many of the events still happen to this day. The festival has drawn celebrities, politicians and other wellknown personalities, over the years, including Colonel Sanders (1973) and Pierre Elliot Trudeau (1980). Some key moments in the history of the festival have included the1946 Winter Carnival’s establishment of the Kangaroo Court. The Court enforced certain rules throughout Whitehorse to ensure community support and merrymaking. One of the rules stated: “All men under 50 years of age must grow a beard (with some exceptions), and any man found not advertising the Carnival in this manner will be tried for ‘non-support’ and fined in any way deemed fit by the Committee.” In 1986, two iconic festival characters were created: the Snowshoe Shufflers were brought to life by Lake Laberge Marj and Rat River Mary. The Shufflers are pioneers when it comes to Ren-

Around the same time, the Sourdough Sams popped up as the fun-loving, foot-stomping, bearwrasslin’, beer-drinking tycoons we’ve all come to expect will put on a good show. Other iconic characters include the Can Can Dancers and the Queen candidates. These traditions both started during the Winter Carnival and are still part of the festivities to this day. Other long-standing events included are the Dereen Hildebrand Business Décor Challenge, the Mad Trapper events (Flour Packing and more), the Cultural Craft Fair and the Rendezvous Parade. And while things have evolved, as Whitehorse has grown, the

festival still maintains a sense of tradition. It brings joy to the community. People are eager to tell friends and family, living down south, about the crazy things that go on here during Rendezvous— chucking a chainsaw, riding in a dogsled, participants using their teeth to pull the garter off of a Can Can dancer’s leg, and watching a crowd of people dressed in 1800s-era Klondike finery as they stand in line, in the cold, to buy tickets to an event. You can read more the festival’s history on our website at yukonrendezvous.com/history. And for this year’s schedule of events, check out yukonrendezvous.com/2024festival/2024-schedule. n

A RENDEZVOUS DRAG SHOW devoted to her career more than anything and is willing to stick it out in the big city, for now, until the Yukon is a place she can stage drag shows full-time. Besides, the Yukon isn’t the first place Sloan has lived in without a real drag scene. “When I started doing drag, I was the premier Punjabi drag queen,” she said. “Back home in Punjab, we don;t have many drag artists coming in and doing drag. It was something I always wanted to do. I wanted to create opportunities for people so they didn’t have to move to other places to do what they really wanted to do.” Sloan’s drag show will take place as part of the 2024 Yukon Rendezvous Festival in Whitehorse and will feature a slew of performers from down south. “I know there are some fabulous drag artists in the Yukon, but they don’t have the chance to perform in bigger shows,” Sloan said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for them to learn more tactics of how drag works. That’s my main goal … to make the community thrive.” To keep up with Jolene Queen Sloan and find out more about her Rendezvous show, follow her on Instagram at instagram.com/jolenequeensloan. n

unjabi-Canadian drag artist Jolene Queen Sloan misses the Yukon. It’s where she got her start in a Rendezvous competition, but without much of a drag scene, she moved down to Vancouver a few years ago to pursue a full-time performance career. But since she’s always wanted to return to the Yukon and continue to build the drag scene Up North, this winter will be a special one. “I really wanted to try drag,” Sloan told What’s Up Yukon, looking back on that first competition she entered in 2020. “People in the Yukon get to see drag very rarely.” After honing her makeup and performance skills for around a year, Sloan headed down to the city where she now regularly hosts and organizes events two to three times a month. She’s grown

her audience exponentially since her move, now sitting at nearly 63-thousand Instagram followers. Feeling confident about her event-production skills, she decided to take a swing at hosting a hometown drag show for the ages. “I reached out to Yukon Rendezvous and pitched them my idea,” Sloan said. “I wanted to diversify the cast more and have inclusion, making sure everyone is given equal opportunity, and it all worked out, so here we are. It’s a wholesome moment; I’m coming back to where I started, but instead of being part of the show, I’m actually producing and hosting it.” Sloan admits that she never wanted to leave the Yukon but had to in order to be able to make a name for herself in the drag world and put on well-attended events, regularly, in order to make a career of performance production. “It really means a lot to me to have these big shows finally happening in the Yukon,” she said. “Honestly, I would love to move back if there is a bigger drag scene, and sometimes the opportunities are not created for you; you have to do them by yourself. That’s the mission that I’m on—to create a drag scene in the Yukon so I can move back and live a wonderful life.” Speaking candidly, Sloan says she doesn’t enjoy city living and wants the peacefulness of living in the Yukon again. Still, she is

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

BRAKE FLUID

Regular brake fluid changes ensure that a car’s braking system operates safely and effectively. Modern braking systems use brake fluid to transfer the application of the brake pedal down to the front and rear brakes, to bring the vehicle to a stop. The fluid is usually silicone based, which does not compress, giving a solid pedal feel and an increased temperature rating. The downside to using this style of fluid is that it absorbs moisture from the air. Constant braking causes massive amounts of heat to be generated by the braking components, which is then transferred into the fluid. If there is moisture in the fluid, this will decrease the temperature rating of the fluid, and can result in a soft brake pedal and increased stopping distance. Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years, regardless of kilometres travelled, but it may need to be changed more frequently if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions.

AFTER THE SHOW

After Escher, a group show presented by the Yukon Artists at Work co-op gallery (YAAW) is coming in February at the Fourth Avenue location, starting Feb. 2

he show is the brainchild of Linda Leon, a member of YAAW and an enthusiastic fan of the late printmaker and Dutch artist, Maurits Cornelis Escher. “He was extraordinary: he really made you think about his work and rethink how you look at things. He is very fun,” said Leon. She had a chance to be fully immersed in his work back in 2018 during a trip in Melbourne, Australia. “The National Gallery had a large show about Escher’s work, and we spent at least three hours in there [with] people waiting one hour just to get in. It was very well attended. It blew my mind.” The Dutch graphic artist is most famously known for his prints featuring strong optical illusions resulting in impossible images where the viewer is being questioned on what they are really seeing. Queried about it, Escher had a clever explanation: “If you want to express something impossible, you must keep to certain rules.” His rules were mathematics, a powerful influence on his art. The use of tessellation, a repetitive pattern of interlocking objects, is a defining aspect of Escher’s work, as well as the use of curvilinear perspective and hyperbolic geometry. His art career spanned for several decades starting in the mid-

1920s to the early ’70s, when he died at age 73. Not a mathematician by training, his understanding of mathematical concepts and how to apply them to his art came from a strong visual intuition that very few artists could equal. “I think he was both mathematician and artist. He was just being a brat not saying he was an artist,” said Leon about Escher, who did not always want to be seen as such. He viewed his work as graphic rather than fully artistic. Back home, after her trip to Australia, Leon watched a documentary about his work and life. Still captured, the idea of putting together a local show around Escher’s work started to form. A call to all current members of the artist collective took place in December to create artwork inspired by Escher. “Expect to see work inspired by him but in our artists’ own disciplines—painting, mix-media, assemblage. My own work is about two hours away to be completed,” said Leon, speaking in early January about her acrylic painting titled Seeking Open Water. The 24- x 48-inch canvas depicts birds looking for open water in spring migration, an idea that is dear to Leon. “I have done river images all my life. It is a theme and there is something to do with the Yukon

River, too.” The birds are interlocking, alternating bright colours and darker ones, playing with negative spaces between the birds à la Escher. “I had to step away to check what I am doing. Where the illusion is going to make it right, you lose it by working too close.” In addition to the gallery members’ contributions, the show will present an original poem by Arlin McFarlane, inspired by Escher’s work and life. To the invitation of Leon, McFarlane agreed to have “Thought Pockets Some Small Change” as part of the show. “Arlin wrote that poem a long time ago, as a young woman, [while] studying theatre in Victoria, B.C. I knew about it and thought it would be great to have it in the show.” After Escher will be presented in the Solo Room at the YAAW gallery at 4129 4th Avenue in downtown Whitehorse, from Feb. 2–29, with an opening reception on Feb. 2 from 5–8 p.m. All are welcome. The show can be seen during the gallery’s regular hours, Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. To keep up with YAAW’s latest projects and shows, visit yaaw. com. n

Nicole Bauberger will be one of the artists of (s) hiver Festival. She will create an installation of four 14-foot monsters around a fire, joined by four trees, with dresses hand-stitched from the food-plastic waste stream. “I am hoping to make cardboard monsters, with students and other community members,” Bauberger said. She will be at the school, where she will create monsters with students. “The school will parade out with their monsters Friday afternoon and hopefully [to] the public Saturday.” Another artist will be Cud Eastbound. The musician, designer and digital creator will present Elements at Bay, an interactive sculpture nestled on the frozen expanse of the Yukon River, constructed from found wood. Its intricate

he annual event is unique to Dawson City and is slated for February 2 to 4 this year. Organized by the (s)hiver Arts Society, it’s an arts festival with indoor and outdoor activities. “The highlights this year are the amount of outdoor interactive exhibits and the performances,” said James Boddie, one of the organizers. “Saturday is pretty much going to be a twelve-hour performance with a few interruptions,” he added. All of the artists who are participating are from the Yukon; most are from Dawson and environs. There are about 30 artists. “The number is increasing daily,” Boddie said. The festival has been running since 2015. Hiver means winter in French, and shivering is part of the cold winter months in the Yukon. The festival changes in shape and content with each edition and there is a lot of disparate content, so everyone will find something

Artist Nicole Schafenacker is looking forward to being part of the (s)hiver Winter Arts Festival. Her installation and performance piece is called Snowfall: Blue Shadow. The artist explained: “This project explores the liminal space between fall and winter, and the porousness of our bodies with our environments, through performance and layered videos filmed in Tàkádàdhà (Marsh Lake).” She added, “As we transition from midnight sun to polar night and back again, witnessing the shifts around us can be a means of tending to the simultaneous changes happening in our own bodies.” The impulse to turn inwards in these darker months can be a deeply generative one that prepares Yukoners to once again receive the light, she explained. Her installation and performance is part of a larger body of work that she has

EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY

Flyin’ Bob and ESED Application for 2024-2025 Student Attendance Projects Last October, the Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society’s (Society) Every Student, Every Day initiative supported Flyin’ Bob, who in partnership with the Yukon Arts Centre and Northwestel Hanging Sky Tour, presented introductory circus workshops in nine communities throughout the territory. Through juggling, clowning, unicycling, acrobatics, wire walking, audience participation, comedy and character, Flyin’ Bob’s instruction stresses the importance of physical activity, concentration, peer support, community and the value of failure as well as success. According to Flyin’ Bob’s web site, “students learn the rewards and consequences of taking risks and taking responsibility for their own actions.” “Every Student, Every Day was excited to co-present Flyin’ Bob and help bring his unique skills and philosophy of learning to Yukon schools,” says Society President Tara Christie.

“We encourage applicants to reach out and discuss their project ideas or brainstorm how Every Student, Every Day could benefit their school or community so we can support as many Yukon students as possible,” adds Christie. Established in 2012, Every Student, Every Day raises awareness and funds to directly support projects designed and implemented by community organizations, Yukon First Nations, schools, school councils
