MEET THE VANSTONES! Vanstones, a Yukon folk-pop trio, released their debut album on August 25

V

anstones joked in their first bio that the band was “forged in the fire of a global pandemic,” according to guitarist and vocalist Nathan Schultz, who makes a point that the line should be read out in “a dramatic, deep voice like you’d hear in nineties action-movie trailers.” Schultz, along with guitarist Amanada Fata and percussionist Sarah Murphy, all of whom share lead vocal duties, are a folkpop trio with influences ranging from bluegrass to world music. They already have a number of performances under their belts, including the Yukon Arts Centre Birthday Bash with Serena Ryder and The Strumbellas, the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival, and Arts in the Park. “The real story is that Nathan and I met through a jam hosted by a mutual friend,” Murphy chimed in. “A few months later, he brought Amanda to a jam, shortly after she moved to the Yukon, and it just evolved from there.” Fata noted that the pandemic comment is true, however, because it was early 2020 when the three musicians started playing together. “Like most musicians, we had so many gigs cancelled during that period,” she said. “It felt like it took forever to get onstage together. In a creative sense, it was a blessing. By the time we finally took the stage in August 2021, the bones of our debut album, Cascadia, were already in place.” Cascadia, recorded and mixed by Jim Holland at Green Needle Records, is set for release on August 25, following singles “Sleepy Northern Town” and “Home.” On the subject of what they sound like, the three musicians each bring something different to the table, making it difficult to describe their music as any one style.

PHOTO: Erik Pinkerton Photography

Vanstones (left to right): Nathan Schultz, Amanda Fata and Sarah Murphy “Our individual styles come from a diverse blend of genres,” said Fata, who offered folk, pop, Celtic, samba, soca, Latin, classic rock, ’90s alternative and East Coast music as examples. While Schultz said the band’s sound can be classified as whatever Radiohead’s style is, the musicians agree that their music is a “mosaic.” “Collectively, our sound draws on all of those influences and more,” said Murphy. “We tend to put our vocal arrangements to the forefront of each song and build out from there. We all listen to such different music, but classic rock bands like Queen, The Beatles and Fleetwood Mac are a common denominator.” Vanstone’s songs come together naturally in a variety of ways. Sometimes, one of the members might bring in a nearly complete song and the band will arrange it together, according to Schultz. “Our first two singles, ‘Home’ and ‘Sleepy Northern Town,’ were like that,” he said. “Amanda and Sarah, respectively, had the bulk of those tracks figured out before we worked on them as a group.” Other times, a song might come together during a jam or even just a conversation where each musician shares ideas with the

other, added Murphy. “The focus track on the album, ‘With You (California),’ is a perfect example of that,” she explained. “Nathan adlibbed what became a part of the chorus—‘she’s got a new tattoo and some ruby lipstick too; I want to move to California with you’—over a rock riff that Sarah created after listening to a Partido Alto rhythm that I was playing on the ukulele. Those seeds grew into a song quickly after.” With their debut album dropping soon, Vanstones will be heading down to Kelowna, B.C., to participate in this year’s BreakOut West Showcase Festival and conference. As for how they’re feeling about that—“really excited.” “There’s such a great delegation of Yukon artists this year, and it’s an honour to be part of it,” said Murphy. “We’re all really proud of being a Yukon band, and we’re looking forward to sharing our music with more folks across Canada, too. “We want to keep growing, and the best way to do that is to get out on the road! BreakOut West is a great opportunity for that, and also an opportunity to meet a lot of industry folks who can help us achieve our goals as a band.” n

What’s Inside

ukon Prize for the Visual Arts co-founders Julie Jai and David Trick announced, during a gala show at the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC), on September 16, that the recipient of this year’s $20,000 prize is Kaylyn Baker. “It means so so much to me,” Baker said. “I just took the chance, and I’m aware that there are lots of really talented artists who live in the Yukon. I’ve been nominated for things in the past but I’ve never won anything, so I didn’t have the highest expectations.” Baker said she was honoured to make the long list and then the short list and would have been happy just to have made it that far and to be in the audience to

see another artist take home the award, but it felt great to have her family with her to see her big moment. Baker is a Northern Tutchone and Tlingit artist and a citizen of the Selkirk First Nation, based out of Whitehorse. Baker’s main artistic focus is on beading, and she uses a variety of traditional and contemporary materials and textiles. Besides making jewelry, Baker also uses beadwork to create garments and accessories such as mukluks, moccasins, purses and regalia. Her work has been seen on the Red Carpet at the Emmy Awards, and she was also a featured designer at Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week 2022, as

Baker was one of six finalists chosen this year, along with Jeffrey Langille (Dawson City); Rebekah Miller (Dawson City); Cole Pauls (Haines Junction); Omar Reyna (Whitehorse); and Alainnah Whachell (Whitehorse), each of whom received $3,000. Baker was selected as the recipient of the Yukon Prize by a jury consisting of Dr. Heather Igloliorte (Inuk-Newfoundlander, Nunatsiavut), a PHOTOS: Mike Thomas, Yukon Arts Centre professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University Kaylyn Baker is the recipient of this year’s of Victoria; Michelle Jacques, $20,000 Yukon Prize for the Visual Art head of Exhibitions and Collections/chief curator at Remai Modern gallery in Saskatoon; well as the 2022 Adäka Art Festival and Sarah Milroy, chief curator Fashion Show in Whitehorse. For Baker, beading is a way and executive director-designate to connect with her ancestors of the McMichael Canadian Art through her spontaneous art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario. “The jurors had the difficult style that she calls “beaded task of choosing the finalists from storytelling.” “My great-great-grandma was 64 applications and then choosing a famous storyteller, and I enjoy one artist to be the recipient of hearing and telling stories, as the 2023 Yukon Prize,” said Jai. well,” she explained. “It didn’t “This task was made all the more occur to me to blend that with challenging by Mary Bradshaw’s curation of the beading—until my cousin passed excellent away and I needed something to exhibition, which showcased how do with my hands while we were talented each of these artists is. They each work in such different meeting as a family.” Inspired by thinking about the mediums, and each is so talented. progression of a storm, Baker I was glad that I did not have to be realized she could tell stories involved in the selection!” The Yukon Prize for Visual Arts through visual media, based on her own memories and experiences, has grown, year after year, since and create beading patterns to match narrative journeys. cont’d on page 4 Are you a Sports fanatic and love all things Sport?

being founded in 2020. This year, 64 Yukon artists applied for the prize, with 12 artists making the long list. The main goals of the Yukon Prize are to recognize excellence by Yukon visual artists, to provide funds to help artists focus full-time on creating art, and to promote Yukon art and artists nationally and internationally. The Yukon Prize and its surrounding events, such as art talks, workshops, art tours and an art crawl with live music by Jazz Yukon and, of course, the gala event, were made possible by a team of volunteers and partners, including the YAC and the Yukon Arts Foundation. Major sponsors for the Yukon Prize include Lotteries Yukon, the Government of Yukon, Air North, Casino Mining, and Yukon University. With a major award now under her belt, Baker is looking to the future of her artistic practices. “After I won the award, I checked my email and found out I was selected for Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week—to be one of their headlining designers,” she said. “I’m going to that in November.” Speaking about Baker’s art, Jai praised the artist and the complexities of her work, saying that Baker deserved to be recognized by the esteemed jury. “Good art invites a conversation, and Kaylyn’s work certainly does this,” said Jai. “As she says, her work is a form of storytelling. She makes this explicit with the beautiful poems that go with each of her artworks. I’m particularly pleased to see beadwork and textiles [being] recognized as fine art by this year’s jury. “This is work traditionally done by women that, in the past, might have been considered craft, but which is definitely fine art. I hope that as many people as possible will go to the Yukon Arts Centre to see Kaylyn’s work and the exceptional work of the other finalists.”

This year’s Yukon Prize Gala at the Yukon Arts Centre The Yukon Prize is offered every two years, meaning that the next edition will take place in 2025.

A show of the art of this year’s Yukon Prize finalists will be on

display until November 18 at the YAC. n

GREY MATTERS

Deborah McNevin Deborah McNevin is a (relatively) long-time Yukoner, a (relatively) new senior and part of the writers’ collective for this column.

FALL(ING) Y

es, it’s that time of year when the leaves drop like flies; and no, this column isn’t about that. Nor is it about falling in love, falling in with a “bad” crowd or falling grades, etc. What I want to talk about is the simple act of falling. All my life I’ve been developing a fair amount of experience with it. Santa Claus put a “klutz” badge in my stocking one year. He could also have been referring to my habit of dropping things, but I’ll leave that other nasty aspect of gravity for another day. Looking back—something we older folks may be prone to do (although I tend to reflect while sitting up), I blame my tendency to fall on many sprained ankles from basketball. It could also have been the years of ballet or my absurd efforts at skating, but I prefer to blame my doomed attempts at becoming a basketball star. This year I’ve fallen several times, not counting the near misses on ice-plagued streets. All of the actual falls can be attributed to klutziness, weaker ankles and a general lack of balance when my body goes one way and my feet prefer to go another. To prevent any possible feeling of being overwhelmed or getting incredibly bored, I’ll give you just two examples. You may thank me any time. The first started innocently enough. This spring I was looking

at the last beams of the last full moon before it took a vacation until the return of the dark. I sighed at the loveliness and turned to go back to bed. Somehow my big toe on one leg got caught in the cuff of my favourite PJs on the other. With my forward momentum already engaged, down I went. You know the saying, “The bigger they are, the harder they fall”? Blast those extra pounds! The floor shook and either the shaking or my curses frightened my husband and my cat out of their respective wits. My knees and wrists and ankles were sore for many days. I couldn’t even exercise—proving the truth of a different saying about silver linings. The next episode took place at a campground in broad daylight. I had found a good spot that people were just leaving. With their permission, I set up a chair, to indicate that the site had been taken, before I trekked off to get the registration forms. The people leaving called to me with one last thought and I turned towards them. Somehow—somehow!—my foot got overbalanced and down I went on a bed of gravel. The earth didn’t shake, but I sure did.

PHOTO: Pixabay I would like to know how one knee can get all bloody while the pants remain unscathed except for blood spatters on the inside. Serious maiming was avoided, but those injuries, plus bruises and a wrist strain, took a while to heal (check previous note about silver linings and exercise). Those of you who worry about the cost of seniors to the medical system need not be concerned. My doctor never heard the slightest whine about these injuries—unlike my friends, my husband and the cat. I do try to include balance exercises when I exercise, although the scarcity of the latter

occasions reduces the effectiveness of the former. I hereby promise not to resume my career in ballet, and I will definitely eschew basketball (except to watch when Canada is playing). I will shorten the hems on all my PJs and housecoats and nightgowns. Given my experience with dropping things, as well as with falling, I promise to turn on a light whenever I venture out of bed at night in the dark, and the lights will not be candles, as “tuck, drop and roll” is not advice that is really helpful at my age. I will carry antibiotic ointment and large bandages whenever

I’m faced with the possibility of a grave gravel encounter. I will check the internet and local resources for reputable recommendations on balancing activities that appeal to me, such as tai chi or YouTube videos. I will also check federal and provincial government websites for more information on fall-proofing my living quarters, as well as other things I can do to avoid further incidents. There! That should do for now. Have a fall-free autumn, everyone. n

A LOVE LETTER TO PIKE I

fell in love with northern pike this summer. If you’ve ever seen a pike up close, you’re probably wondering how one could love such a slimy creature with its mouth filled with hundreds of pointy teeth and a predatory look in its eyes that may make you wonder if there’s ever been a recorded pike attack on an unassuming swimmer (I checked and the few confirmed cases include a water skier who was bitten on the foot in Wales, in the late ’90s, and a husky who was reportedly attacked by a pike near North Pole, Alaska, last year). According to the Government of Yukon website, northern pike are the most widely distributed freshwater fish in Canada. Found in shallow waters and weedy marshes throughout lakes and rivers in North America, Northern Europe and Asia, it’s a carnivorous fish whose diet includes insects, smaller fish, frogs, small mammals and even birds. When food is scarce, pikes are said to resort to cannibalism. Nicknames include Northacuda, water wolf, slough shark, snake fish and snot rocket. Like I said—not the kind of fish that one would think one could love. Despite its dubious reputation, I would argue that pike is an underrated and formidable fish. Northern pike are apex predators that generally live solitary lives and are aggressively territorial. They can swim 12 to 16 kilometres per hour and put up a fierce and thrilling fight. If you’re lucky, you can see them dart out from a clump of grass and speed towards your lure like a scene from the movie Jaws—their elongated bodies sometimes jumping out of the water with a powerful burst of energy in an attempt to free themselves. They’re generally very abundant and are often caught by anglers who are hoping to catch other kinds of fish, making them common victims of inept catch-andrelease techniques. While their almost

prehistoric appearance makes them less than appetizing to look at, they actually have firm and flaky white meat with a surprisingly mild taste, especially if you catch them in cold waters. They’re rich in protein, selenium, vitamins B3 and B12, omega 3s and vitamin D, the last of which makes them a great addition to your diet

Eye to eye with “Esox lucius”

PHOTOS: Jessica Surber

The beauty of a freshly-caught pike in the dark winter months when your body can’t make sufficient vitamin D. Pike may have gained a negative reputation because they are notoriously bony. Having heard about their unique Yshaped pin bones, I imagine that there are plenty of people who have never even tried their meat due to being intimidated by the prospect of filleting them. Look up the “five fillet method” on YouTube and you’ll quickly see how easy it is to get five large, boneless fillets from your next pike, which you can then turn into a variety of delicious meals. Whether you enjoy pike steamed, grilled, boiled in salt water to make “poor man’s lobster,” battered and fried, turned into chowder, cut up into pieces and tossed with

A large pike fillet waiting to be cooked and enjoyed

A Love Letter To Pike ... cont’d from page 10

pasta, ground into fish burgers or pickled, I bet you’ll be amazed at how good this fearsome-looking fish tastes. This summer I had the pleasure of eating pike ceviche for the first time. The northern pike’s firm, white meat makes it perfect for this traditional Peruvian dish that is typically made with raw fish or seafood marinated in citrus juice. The experience made me realize that there are probably still an endless array of other surprising uses for pike, unknown to me up until now. Since pike is a predatory fish, it can contain a bit more mercury than a non-predatory fish. Catching smaller, younger pike can help you avoid higher levels of contamination and also allows the larger fish to reproduce again next spring. The largest recorded pike was caught in Germany in 1986 and weighed 25 kilograms; I’m generally happiest with pike that weigh two or three kilos. The previously mentioned nickname “snot rocket” comes from the extra-slimy mucous coating that has been known to make even the most seasoned angler cringe. The slime isn’t a trivial feature, however; it’s actually nature’s ingenious way of helping pike move through the water faster by reducing friction, helping them escape predators and protecting them from fungi, bacteria, parasites and infections. Since the mucous is a result of water mixing with glycol proteins produced by the pike’s epidermis, it stands to reason that the sliminess will decrease if you let your freshly-caught pike dry off a bit before handling it. Once you have a pike on your line, be careful when unhooking your hook from the pike’s jaw (preferably with a jaw spreader), and if you don’t want to lose your lure while fishing pike, be sure to use a stainless-steel wire leader. Compared to other fish, pike have an incredible way of hanging onto life that begs to be respected. Be sure to kill your catch properly in order to prevent it from suffering for long. For me, pike fishing is a wonderfully satisfying and exciting way to fill the freezer with some local protein. It’s a fish that I admire for its fierceness and its ability to offer generous amounts of delicious meat for myself and the ones I love. I appreciate the fact that they’re plentiful and fairly easy to catch, and I’m grateful. n

Northern Pike Ceviche Ingredients • Skinless, boneless pike fillet, cut into small cubes • Fresh lime juice • Salt • Ginger, grated • Celery, minced • Garlic, minced • Chili pepper (choose amount and type to match your taste), finely chopped • Fresh cilantro, chopped

• Red onion, thinly sliced (if you want to lessen

the intense onion taste, soak the sliced onion in cold water for at least 15 minutes)

Instructions 1. Wash and dry pike. 2. Place cubed fish in a bowl and add enough fresh lime juice to cover it. 3. Add the salt, ginger, garlic, chili pepper, cilantro and celery. 4. Let it sit in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes, turning the pieces a few times so they all get equally “cooked” by the lime juice (you’ll notice the meat turning opaque in as little as 5 minutes). 5. Add the red onion. 6. Mix and let the ceviche marinate for another 10 minutes, if desired.* (The time you let the fish marinate depends on the size of the cubes and the texture you want to achieve: some let it marinate for less time; and others, for more). Serve with boiled sweet potatoes and enjoy! * Acidic marinades will not kill bacteria or parasitic worms. Ceviche is traditionally made with fresh fish, but if you want to minimize the risk of parasites, Health Canada recommends that fish be frozen at or below -20 C for at least seven days, to kill potentially harmful parasites. For information about parasites and diseases in Yukon fish, check out the Yukon Fish Health Handbook: yukon.ca/sites/yukon.ca/files/env/env-yukon-fishhealth-handbook.pdf Please Note: Ceviche is typically not recommended for pregnant women.

❑ 2 white potatoes

INSTRUCTIONS

❑ 2 eggs, beaten

• Poke both types of potatoes all over, with a fork, and microwave in five-minute intervals, flipping the potatoes between each interval until the potatoes are soft, about 10–15 minutes. When potatoes are cool enough to handle, peel and discard the skin and then mash the potatoes with a fork. Combine mashed sweet potato and beaten egg in a bowl and then season to taste, with salt and pepper. Add flour, 1/4 cup at a time, and knead until a dough forms.

❑ 1 cup flour ❑ Salt and pepper, to taste ❑ 4 Tbsp butter

• Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch the gnocchi in batches (they are done when they float to the surface).

❑ 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

• Melt the butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. When melted, add the cooked dumplings and toss to coat with butter. Top with grated parmesan and serve. n

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive. Tire Shop: MON-SAT 7:30-5:30 Mechanical Shop: MON-FRI 8-5
