he annual BYTE Battle of the Bands has been taking place for over a decade, which will feature up to 10 groups, has teamed up for the second year with Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous as an affiliated event at Shipyards Park. The event takes place on Thursday, Feb. 22 and is open to youth bands – which are defined as having members under 30 years of age. What’s Up Yukon is excited to be providing a prize of a feature article on this year’s winner in a future issue. The Battle of the Bands attracts a wide variety of acts, according to BYTE Community Outreach Coordinator Tayo Adamek. “It is open to any genre of music and in the past we’ve seen all kinds of acts; from jazz to metal to hip hop/rappers,” Adamek said. “This year we have jazz bands from Vanier, rapper Antarcticus, and some other hip hop artists, to name a few. We also expect a couple of rock bands.” Past winners include some of

the better-known names in the Whitehorse music scene and have gone on from the Battle of the Bands to perform shows including the Dawson City Music Festival, the Atlin Arts and Music Festival, Canada Day celebrations, and have even embarked on Canadian tours.

Whitehorse-based Ukes of Hazard won in 2017 and took on all of these after performing last February. (Ed. note: Ukes of Hazard were featured in the April 19, 2017 issue of WUY)

They played both Dawson and Atlin festivals and embarked on a 23 day tour playing 15 venues in British Columbia and Alberta. The 2013 winner Vision Quest, a First Nation hip hop group, also launched onto larger performances in the Yukon and Outside. “Vision Quest toured across Canada after they won Battle of the Bands,” Adamek said. The show is judged by a panel of volunteers invited to participate by the organizing committee. They are targeted individuals with some expertise in music. “The judges are people who are involved in music,” Adamek explained. “Like people with Music Yukon, or other musicians in the territory.” Adamek noted that BYTE tries to involve youth as much as possible, so this year the Master of Ceremonies will be a young man who has been developing his hosting skills at a variety of events. “We intend to involve as many youth as possible,” Adamek said. “This was another way to cont’d on page 3 ...

Eye on the Outdoors

Cooking and freezing wild meat I

received a question on just how long you should extend the freezing time of wild, big game meat. There are lengths of time that wild meat should be in the freezer. Big game such as moose, deer, caribou and elk should be kept in freezer for no more than 12 months. Bear meat for no more than six months. If you are going to cut up meat for stew, then you are looking at four months at the extreme. Also, remember that big game should not be cooked as you would domestic animals. There are specific temperatures for different big game – much different from domestic animals. The next issue is how to cook a young animal, and how to cook an old animal. This is where the proper temperatures come in – which differ from a young animal to an old animal. One recipe does not fit all, even if it’s the same type of animal. This is the downfall of substituting domestic recipes for cooking wild game. There is also different ways of cooking specific meats even from the same animal. Small game such as rabbit or snowshoe hare has a freezing time 10 months at the extreme. If you are a serious hunter, then spend some money on one of those freeze wrap machines. My wife, Lisa, has one of these machines and it makes all the difference in the time you have the meat in the freezer and holding that great taste. Also, never leave your wild

game meat out of the freezer to thaw at room temperatures. Take the wild meat out of the freezer and place it in the refrigerator to thaw.

Murray Martin has some tips on preparing wild game kebabs

Tasty venison kebabs

I have used this recipe with venison, but it would be good with leg of elk or caribou. Doubtful with moose. The venison meat for these kebabs should be taken from the shoulder and exclude any bone. INGREDIENTS 2 ½ pounds of venison shoulder meat ½ cup olive oil ¼ cup red wine 1 ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp ground black pepper 1 tsp oregano leaves 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped ½ pound of brown mushrooms, stems removed 16 very small white onions, peeled and parboiled 1 large green pepper, cut into 1 ½ inch chunks 16 cherry tomatoes METHOD Cut the meat into 1 ½ inch chunks. Put meat in a large bowl with the marinade ingredients: olive oil, red wine, oregano leaves, garlic, salt and black pepper. Cover bowl and place in refrigerator for five hours, then take out the meat and retain the marinade. Using 1-inch metal skewers, place the mushrooms, onions, peppers and tomatoes alternately

PHOTO: Pixabay with the sections of meat on the skewers. Brush the marinade over the entire skewers presentation. Place the skewers on a rack in a broiler pan. Broil for at least 12 minutes at about 5 inches from the source of heat, remembering to turn the meat on the skewer so to brown on all sides. Baste with any of the remaining marinade. This should serve between four and six hungry guests. Murray Martin is a former Ontario Conservation Officer and a long standing member of The Outdoor Writers of Canada.

Caring for the bison hunt rifle T

he suggestions I make here also apply to a November Dempster Highway caribou hunt, but our big winter hunt is for wood bison and certain rifle care options should be considered for this hunt in extreme cold conditions. Over the years since the bison hunt started, a number of hunters have experienced some problems with the operation of their rifles as well as other equipment where steps had not been taken to prep them for low temperatures in the -25ºC to below -40ºC range. Rifles are typically kept clean to keep them workable and this cleaning routine usually finishes with the use of gun-oil, which lubricates the moving parts. Sadly, gun-oil (or any other oil) does not fulfill its duty in extreme cold. Similar to the oil in your vehicle, cold makes the oil thick and stiff and in the case of your rifle, causes the bolt and other moving parts of the action to freeze solid and often makes the firing pin move slowly or freeze in place and not move at all. Nothing will move in the rifle and it will not shoot, so the bison you worked so hard to stalk gets to live another day.

Consider the following suggestions to prevent the rifle freezeup: Clean the action thoroughly before going on the cold weather hunt. Remove all oil from the barrel and especially the action. Spray the moving parts of the action with a solvent that cuts oil. Remove the bolt and soak it in white gas or another oil-cutting solvent. If you are comfortable with taking the bolt apart, do so and wash the parts in the solvent. No oil = no freeze-up. Those of us who wear glasses know what happens when we come inside a warm environment from the cold. Our glasses immediately “fog up” with condensation. It is the same when you are bringing a rifle in from extreme cold, whether it’s into a walltent, cabin or RV, it will immediately cause condensation to form on all parts of the rifle. This will cause rust, but a more immediate problem is that the condensation will freeze solid when the rifle is taken back out into the cold. If you cannot leave the rifle in the cold in your truck or in another secure cold environment, bring it inside in a case and let it warm up very gradually to avoid condensa-

tion. If it must come inside with you, hang it a few feet away from the heat source so condensation will evaporate as it forms. This “sudden extreme cold to warm” environment change is equally dangerous for riflescopes, binoculars and cameras, so the same precautions are suggested for those items. Another worthwhile safety suggestion is to put electrical or duct tape over the muzzle of the rifle when going out in the field. This keeps snow or any other material from entering the muzzle, blocking the barrel and causing the barrel to burst when the rifle is fired. Even a very careful hunter can unknowingly dip the muzzle into the snow while concentrating on the stalk. Larry Leigh is an avid angler, hunter and all-round outdoors person who prefers to cook what he harvests himself. He is a past president of the Canadian Wildlife Federation and retired hunter education coordinator for the Government of Yukon. Please send comments about his articles to wild@whatsupyukon.com.

Helping the youth to heal

First Nation motivational speaker from Saskatchewan headlines a gathering to empower youth family members of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Feb. 17, 18 at the Kwanlin Dün Potlatch House by Stephanie Brown

T

Motivational speaker Mike Scott of the Sturgeon Lake First Nation in Saskatchewan has a created the “Sober is Sexi” social media campaign and will present a talk called “Finding the Warrior Within”

Next, the youth will then get a hands-on workshop with local artist Daniel Benjamin Gribbon, a member of the Tahltan First Nation who has been involved with multiple projects around White-

of healing. He has more than 2,700 followers on his YouTube channel; several of his videos have been viewed more than 10,000 times, and his most popular video has been viewed more than 56,000 times. “I find it extremely important that our youth’s voice don’t become lost. They should be able to express themselves and be given the chance to be heard. This event is for them, it’s for them to know that we as a community are listening and that we care for their wellbeing,” said YAWC Youth Board member Felicia Bailey-Cashin. “We should be giving them a platform to help them honour the ones they’ve lost or are still looking for. Our youth deserve that support where we can lift them up and let them know that they will be okay.” We hope this event will inspire our youth to grow from their trauma or challenges. It doesn’t have to define them. We want to empower them so they know they can become strong leaders. The workshop aims to help youth find their voice and give them the opportunity to emerge from their struggles by sharing it and connecting youth from all around so they do not feel alone in their struggles. The videos will be showcased at a private film screening in the future. We would like to thank the Yukon Government Women’s Directorate for funding this event. If you want to know more about this event, contact us through email yawc@northwestel.net or call 6676162.

he Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Council (YAWC) will host the Gathering of Youth-Family members of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Kick Off Event on February 17 to 18. This event is geared to inspire Aboriginal youth to find their voice and channel their challenges or struggles by sharing their stories together. One thing that became very evident through the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls inquiry was that giving the families the opportunity to tell their story is important – and this workshop will give participants the opportunity to support one another, lean on each other and hold each other up. There are currently 42 missing and murdered Aboriginal women in the Yukon. “Youth from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls families have a story to tell and it is our hope that this event will give them support and influence to share their stories. In First Nations culture the use of oral teachings gives the next generation the knowledge and strength to carry on,” said YAWC President Doris Anderson. “We hope by giving these youth the opportunity to have a voice in these tragic situations, it can start the healing process and we can grow and learn together from it.” First Nation youth will gather at Kwanlin Dün Nàkwät’à Kų (Potlatch House) and spend two days learning new tools and resources and start the process of healing through art and film. They will get presentations from local artists, youth groups like The Shãkãt Journal and BYTE and finish off with a presentation from motivational speaker Mike Scott. The Shãkãt Journal will introduce the power of expressing themselves on video. Youth will then participate in a Healthy Minds workshop with BYTE.

ebruary 19 to 22 will see the latest edition of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Heritage Department’s bi-annual Myth and Medium week. In the past, these cultural weeks have focussed on stories and drama, but Traditional Knowledge Specialist Jody Beaumont says this one will be themed around food. She’s a little surprised that this theme wasn’t one of the first ones considered, as it seems so obvious. The first day will feature an afternoon cooking workshop at the Robert Service School; guest speaker Art Napoleon will work with the Grade 8 Foods class. Napoleon is a member of the Saulteau First Nation in north-eastern B.C. and is based in Victoria. He is variously described as a TV producer/songwriter/adventurer/wild game foodie/ weekend shapeshifter and extreme berry picker. The evening event at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, will be a literal and figurative potluck, beginning with an actual meal and then moving on to a dozen 3-minute food and culture “appetizer” talks and then a “main course” presentation by Napoleon. Several elders will provide the “dessert” in the form of closing comments, spiced with Nora Van Bibber’s cranberry shortbread. All of this should run from 7 o’clock to 9, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. There will be morning presentations on Tuesday and a practical workshop on Wednesday, along with the popular Language Variety Show, which often features some Hän Hip-Hop. Both afternoons will move across the street to the TH Community Hall and its parking lot, for experiential activities that run over both days and are food related. Tuesday evening will feature arts and entertainment, with a concert by Napoleon, a film screening, a play reading, shadow

puppets and some film footage from TH Hunt Camps. Wednesday evening will be a little more formal, with a talk about caribou (wëdzey), another on food security by Wayne Horowitz, a reading and a caribou project report. On Thursday the symposium will ask “How does a Museum Taste?” at the Dawson City Museum, where Alex Somerville will discuss and show flavours from history. There will be an Elders and Land Users Roundtable discussion to close off the morning.

Adventurous souls may hike to the Tr’ochëk Heritage Site and back in the afternoon with Cathie Findlay-Brook, while others may chose to explore local teas and salves with Fran Morberg-Green at the cultural centre. The Myth and Medium week will officially close with a traditional feast and dance on Thursday evening, with food provided by TH elder Victor Henry and other TH citizens, the Moosemeat Men. Music for dancing and enjoyment will come from the people who will be taking in the fiddling

Students from Old Crow will be joining fiddlers from Robert Service School for this. “We wrap on Thursday night with the feast,” said Beaumont, “but because the jiggers and the fiddlers with the Old Crow program will be here, because they will be in town, we’ve tacked on another dance on the Friday night, which happens to be Heritage Day.” At this writing, some parts of the program have not been fully

Yukon’s got strength and a whole lot of style by Kylie Campbell

S

ince the winter carnival began in 1945, the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous has been a popular tradition and none more so than the Strength and Style competition. “Strength and Style has always been one of the core events from the start,” said Bruce Sahlstrom, vice-president of Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous board. The Strength and Style event features six competitions this year:

Yukon’s strength and style shines through on Feb 21 at the Towne & Mountain Hotel in the Rendezvous competition with a long and quirky history 1. Hairy leg or armpit (women only) – 1st prize only 2. Hairy chest – 1st prize only 3. Best mustache – 3 prizes 4. Best old growth beard – 1st prize only 5. Best new growth beard – 1st prize only 6. Top ink – 1st prize only The event evolves every year, and can often change at the last minute depending on the number of entrants or the crowd’s atmos-

phere. A big change from last year’s competition is that there will only be one tattoo competition and one prize for the winner (last year there was best tattoo on an arm or leg, and best chest or back tattoo, each being awarded first, second, and third place prizes). The Strength and Style competition is a popular event and whether you’re new or old to the Yukon, it brings people together.

Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children Survey Yukon students in Grades 6 to 10 will be taking part in this study between February and April this year. The anonymous and confidential survey will gather information on a variety of topics, so programs and services can be developed to better meet the needs of youth. Topics covered in the survey include nutrition, exercise, relationships, mental wellness, life at school, violence, substance use, and bullying. Read reports from previous surveys and learn more about the 2018 survey at www.hss.gov.yk.ca/health_behaviours.php.

“It represents the Yukon and Yukoners,” Sahlstrom said. “Look at 1898, as back in the gold rush days, mustaches and beards were the style of the Klondike. “And the strength needed for things like hiking the Chilkoot pass can be demonstrated in the Flour Packing contest.” So how do the judges determine the best of each competition? “Tattoos – it’s not just about the artwork,” Sahlstrom says, “There’s usually a story there.” One such story is that of Manu Keggenhoff, Rendezvous’ photographer of last year’s event, who decided to enter the competition on a whim. “It was a great night, the audience was super enthusiastic and the vibe at its peak,” Keggenhoff recalled. “It was spontaneous. And though I knew my tattoo wasn’t the biggest that was shown I decided to join the fun.” Although she didn’t win the competition, she told her tattoo story. “It’s a mountain scene with a river flowing in front of it. I had a little creative low for a while due to personal losses,” Keggen-

hoff said. “In 2016 I was invited to speak at a photographer’s conference on P.E.I., which was just the right thing to do. It was called ‘Land and See.’ It got my creative juices flowing again and that’s what the tattoo is all about.” The judges also look intricately at the hairy contestants, magnifying glasses and rulers get pulled out to make the judgement, measuring the length and assessing the hairiness of the hair. Meanwhile the beards and mustaches are judged by the care the owners take, the oils used and the overall style-aesthetic and how they meet the Rendezvous expectation of the traditional Klondike look. “In Yukon you can rebuild yourself and no one judges you – except the judges,” Sahlstrom laughed. “I think that’s what this event represents to a lot of people. Everyone has a story and they want to tell it.” One such story is the tale of Loretta Westman and her daughter Jess Westman. Throughout the 1980s, Loretta competed in cont’d on page 11 ...

the Strength and Style competition, specialising in the hairiest leg competitions. She competed many times and won best over all in 1985 and won most horrific hairy legs in 1989. “I always felt uncomfortable having hairy legs. In the eighties it was very taboo,” Loretta said. “But Yukon women aren’t like regular women. They can do many things like use a chainsaw, build a home. Elsewhere these things are considered ‘unlady like,’ but to demonstrate you’re a real Yukon woman you have to be tough. I entered because it was something you’re told you’re not supposed to do, but is celebrated up here. That’s what makes Rendezvous and the Yukon so special.” Loretta was proud to enter and win. At that time the competition used to be anonymous. “I was heavily pregnant one of the years I entered at the time and you had to put your leg or arm through a cardboard cut out of a can can dancer,” Loretta said. “It was so the judges wouldn’t play favourites with who was competing. But because I was so pregnant, people had to hold me up so I could reach my legs out of the cardboard holes.” Back in those days, the golden razor blade was one of the prizes to the winner. Loretta won three with the intent that she, Jess and her other daughter would each have a golden razor. This year, Loretta’s daughter Jess will be competing and following in her mother’s footsteps. “I’m super proud of my mom, she is a great role model,” Jess said. “If I ever have a daughter I will encourage her to enter, as girls should be comfortable with their bodies and the way they look naturally.” Jess saw last year’s winner’s picture and thought that she would most certainly win. “My mom thinks I will win the hairy armpit competition for certain,” Jess said. “She has her father’s leg hair though, so I don’t think she will win that,” Loretta laughed. Jess is excited to compete and has been growing out her armpit hair for a few months. “It’s great to celebrate Yukon women,” she said. “We are pioneers and we

Wild Game Recipes with Sydney Oland

Japanese Hamburger (Hambagu) T

his is classic Japanese comfort food, exactly what you would expect from an all-night diner in Tokyo. Hambagu is just a simply seasoned burger served with gravy over hot rice. It’s simple and comforting and just a tiny bit different than a hot hamburger sandwich you’d find anywhere along the Alaska Highway. It’s those teenie differences that can make this meal a totally different experience, though. And like any other hamburger it’s really all about the toppings, so if there’s any doubt, definitely go for the fried egg. And do not skimp on the gravy. If you’re looking to really dive into those toppings you can find Kewpie mayo at Save On Foods, and schichimi at the Superstore. Kewpie is just a little different than North American mayo; a bit richer and slightly sweeter. Schichimi is a dried condiment made of a mixture of toasted sesame seeds, seaweed, chilis, poppy seeds and orange peel. Both are fantastic additions to anyone’s culinary repertoire so don’t be afraid to invest in either or both. You’ll find a thousand uses for each, I promise.

Celebrating First Nations’ achievements and culture

The 44th Annual Skookum Jim Folklore Show takes place on Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. at the Yukon Arts Centre by Danny Macdonald

T

he Skookum Jim Folklore Show has become an annual tradition that celebrates First Nation traditions, community and culture. The first Folklore Show was organized by the late Doris McLean, an elder and former chief of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation. According to Skookum Jim Recreation Coordinator David Dugas, the original concept came about to help fill a gap. “Doris McLean originally started it as a showcase for First Nation culture, which was needed in the North,” Dugas said. “There are youth and elder awards that recognize outstanding contributions in the communities.” The Folklore Show melds the celebration of these award recipients’ achievements with performances by cultural artists who reside in the communities. A com-

mittee made up of people involved with Skookum Jim makes the decisions on who to select each year to perform. This year, the show has adopted a theme of “Revitalization” and is being produced to merge different age groups. There will be traditional food prepared by Teresa Ward and her company, Grandma Treesaw’s Bannock and Catering Services. Also this year, the Masters of Ceremony will once again be regulars Sharon Shorty and Duane Aucoin, as Gramma Susie and Cash Creek Charlie. “This year, we’ve really aimed to be intergenerational,” Dugas said. “There are three different performances with young children who might not fully know the scope of what they’re involved with, the youth hip hop showcase, and Dena Zagi, who are a well-established

registered participants, but about 30 children will perform at the Folklore Show on Feb. 17. The program is guided by several leaders who work with them to share their culture. The Youth Hip Hop Showcase will feature a group of young performers who have been gathering on one Thursday each month at Splintered Craft to develop hip hop techniques and skills. According to Dugas, the group and evenings have been gaining momentum. “It was envisioned as a way to give a voice to youth because it is important that they have a voice that is theirs,” Dugas said. “They

gather and have hip hop battles and live instrumentation. Through that, they’ve put together a group for the show.” The group is not limited to Whitehorse, added Dugas, noting that youth from Haines Junction are participating as well. There are a number of MCs and one producer, Jeremy Parkin, who produces the instrumentation. The headline act for the show is Dena Zagi, Ross River musician Dennis Shorty’s band. Celebrating First Nations’ achievements and culture... cont’d Up Yukon.) Shorty grew up in a family who spoke Kaska and performs in his traditional language. A well-established band, they have cross-generational appeal with their folksy-rock genre of music. The multi-generational approach ties into their theme. “We are looking to attract more youth,” Dugas explained. “But having the different groups adds to the diversity of the music.” The second major focus of the show is to recognize and celebrate those individuals who have made a significant contributions to their communities. The Keish Awards are presented each year at the Folklore Show. There are youth and elder categories and this year there will be one youth recipient

and two elders, but they won’t be revealed until the evening. “It’s a platform to recognize individuals doing good work,” Dugas said. “For the elders we have short videos filmed interviewing them and speaking about their work.” Yukon filmmaker Alan Coad does the short films on each individual and they aim to provide an opportunity to hear about the elders’ projects in an informal environment, like their own living rooms. Examples of past winners include Art Johns, the sole winner of an elder award last year. Johns is an elder with the Carcross/Tagish First Nation who negotiated terms for First Nation self-government in their Final Agreement which was signed in 2005.

The Folklore Show is funded through ticket sales and sponsorships and any profit turned would go directly towards programming at the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre. Individuals interested in acquiring tickets or learning more about the show can visit the Yukon Arts Centre website, YukonArtsCentre.com, or visit the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre Facebook page.

I found this giant squash for sale at Wyke’s Your Independent Grocer, and was amazed and impressed, because I had never seen such an enormous squash. It’s a 37-pound banana squash, and I wondered who would buy it, and how they would cook it. I went back the next day and found that it had been cut up, and was now for sale as manageable chunks. And then it all made sense.

In the North; by the North; for the North: Science and Research Stories from Yukon College

What do you think?

ResearChats offer welcoming space for brainstorming and collaboration every Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Yukon College with Leighann Chalykoff

I

t’s noon on a Friday and an unlikely group of Yukoners gather in a classroom at Yukon College. They’ve brought their lunches and their big ideas. ResearChats, devised by Northern Studies Instructor Amanda Graham and Chemistry Instructor Ernie Prokopchuk, are weekly opportunities for researchers from all disciplines to share ideas and learn from one another. They happen on Fridays from noon to 1 p.m., and everybody is invited to attend. Each week’s Chat has a loose theme — such as the importance of listening or the minor art of asking for money — and leaves plenty of time for conversation. “It’s a low-stakes, friendly way for people to come in and bounce ideas around,” Graham said. “Originally, we thought about the Chats as a kind of speed-dating event, where we can share ideas, see if research interests overlap and maybe people can work together.” The Chats started in September 2014, with the launch of the Yukon College Research Fund, a $100,000 annual fund for student, faculty and staff research projects. The Chats and the fund support each other, but they exist separately.

“The fund gives people a chance to try things that maybe they wouldn’t otherwise have the space to do,” Prokopchuk said. “There are basic guidelines and then there’s some leeway.” The Yukon College Research Fund is available for things that may not fit under the guidelines of any other fund. And it sees a wide range of applications from all corners of university research. Things like practical research on whether robot vacuums could be used for cleaning in the College, cultural research on the history of octopus bags and a project that looked at reducing bear attractants at Cogden Creek Campground. Graham is a strong proponent of the Chats because she has a longstanding interest in promoting northern research. In fact, Graham was the first graduate of the College’s Northern Studies program in 1988. At that point, she was studying under Aron Senkpiel, Yukon College’s founding dean of Arts and Science, and an important figure in northern post-secondary education and in the development of the College. Throughout the 1980s Senkpiel worked to expand the research potential of the North, the Yukon, and the College. He was integral to the development of the Northern Research Institute and Canada’s contribution to the University of the Arctic, and he was also — with Norm Easton and Ken Coates — a founding editor of The Northern Review, an academic multidisciplinary journal exploring human experience in

CARTOON: Amanda Graham the Circumpolar North that still publishes twice a year at the College. “Right from the beginning Aron had a vision,” Graham said. “He said the College was going to be a university in 30 years, and that we would create a scholarly capacity for ourselves, and he was bang on.” Meanwhile Prokopchuk is interested in lowering the barriers to entering research. Bringing together diverse experiences and points of view in situations like the ResearChats fosters innovation and creates a welcoming space for new ideas and collaborations, he said. It benefits all involved. Prokopchuk grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario and was inspired by a great chemistry teacher he had in high school. He went on to earn his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Western Ontario, and worked for seven years at the University of Winnipeg, before applying for a job as a chemistry instructor at Yukon College and coming North. “The publish-or-perish attitude chased me out of larger universities, and I don’t want to see us

become that,” Prokopchuk says. “It’s a competitive, destructive atmosphere.” At Yukon College, Prokopchuk has the opportunity to explore and to experiment in his classes. Recently, he has been investigating the potential to make biofuels, such as ethanol, out of fireweed. “I’m a huge fan of small schools — I think there’s more opportunity when students are in a class of 10 or 20, rather than 500,” Prokopchuk said. “Up here I can focus on the students and I get the fun of trying something new without the stress of having to publish before I get kicked to the curb.” ResearChats are open to members of the Yukon College community, visiting scholars, and Yukon’s research community at large. Take Charge of Your Health with Dr. Jocelyn Land-Murphy, ND

Is stress the root of your health concerns?

Adrenal fatigue and the downhill spiral of chronic stress

A

s a Naturopathic Doctor in Whitehorse with a focus on women’s health, I see a lot of burnout caused by chronic stress. Often my patients don’t realize that their daily pressures are adversely affecting their physical health. Our bodies are built to cope with tense situations, but struggle when the stressors become persistent. The good news is that burnout can be beat if it is understood and treated properly. It all centres around the endocrine system, including the adrenal glands that sit on top of your kidneys. Their primary role is to produce the stress-response hormones cortisol and adrenaline. With healthy adrenal function, cortisol helps you get out of bed and face the day’s challenges, as well as balance blood sugars and regulate your metabolism, blood pressure and immune system. But when the adrenal glands are over-stimulated by chronic stress, they overproduce cortisol until they “burn out” through three stages of progressive deterioration. Stage One is called Adrenal Alarm: this is your body’s normal reaction to stress that sends out a burst of cortisol and launches your “fight or flight mode.” Your heart beats faster, your muscles receive extra fuel and your body goes on high alert. In a healthy state, this natural coping mechanism will recede once you’ve dealt with the stress and moved on. But if the stress becomes constant or severe, your adrenal glands start to suffer. Your body can only maintain this prolonged cortisol response for so long before you enter Stage Two: Adrenal Resistance. Your cortisol levels fluctuate erratically, often with low energy in the morning and “wired and tired” symptoms at night when you’re exhausted but can’t fall (or stay) asleep,

Stress could be causing your health problems because your mind won’t calm down. This excess cortisol leads to other health problems such as decreased thyroid function, fertility issues, weight gain, cravings and fluctuations in blood sugar and blood pressure. Over an extended time in the Adrenal Resistance stage, your adrenals can no longer keep up, and

you enter Stage Three: Adrenal Exhaustion. Now your body is no longer able to produce sufficient cortisol for you to function. You are physically and mentally drained, progressively depleted of the vital nutrients and resources required to get you through your day. People in this phase experience debilitating fatigue, low

blood pressure, low blood sugar, frequent infections, brain fog, and low to non-existent libido. Adrenal fatigue isn’t something you can “tough out.” It’s a condition that can be diagnosed and treated. For my patients, my preference is to run a full Adrenal Function Panel, which measures four cortisol points throughout

the day and gives us a functional perspective of what is happening in your body. Treatment options depend largely on the stage of adrenal fatigue, but of course the basics apply to everyone, including: • sleeping at least 7 hours per night • eating a whole-foods, low-glycemic diet • moving exercise to the morning (to mimic a more natural cortisol curve which would peak in the morning and then gradually decrease) • incorporating stress-coping strategies like meditation, yoga, counselling or journaling (a bedtime worry journal lets you write down your troubles and then resolve to not think of them again until morning) As a Naturopathic Doctor I also employ nutrition-based treatments to replace the specific vitamins and minerals depleted by adrenal fatigue, including intravenous nutrient support; herbal medicines that serve as adaptogens to help the body respond to and recover from stress; and checking on thyroid function and hormone balance that are also disrupted by adrenal fatigue and contribute to the downhill health spiral. The first step for anyone struggling with burnout is to get more information on what’s happening in your body. It’s easy to write off exhaustion as “just stress,” but it’s important to know if you are indeed struggling with adrenal fatigue, what stage you are in, what else might be at the root of your symptoms and what your options are to recover and return to sustainable health. enjoying our undivided attention. But would they mesh? “I’m not sure if my older dog will kill him!” I admitted to Selina the approachable and knowledgeable staff who had been assisting us at the shelter. “Bring him by for a visit, Alfie’s very friendly and trainable. He even likes cats,” she assured me. Trainable, eh? The future tense of this verb was not lost on me. We had spent months training, and doting on, our first dog with – what I now realize – was a lot of spare time. Now that time was more fleeting, were we up to this challenge? Alfie cried the whole 30-minute drive home from the shelter. Literally. He cried so much my husband had to stop the car… twice! Paradoxically, he was rather quiet his first few days at home. Did he know he was “on trial”?! (Mae Bachur had offered us the option of fostering Alfie before permanently adopting him.) After a while, he livened up and acted like the 6-monthold puppy that he was. There were some tense

moments, some standoffs with the cat and many nips to the heels of running children. However, we all fell in love and, after much family debate, renamed him Chico (in the hopes he wouldn’t get too “grande”). Chico and Hugo took to each other immediately and have become the best of friends! Chico respects Hugo as boss (no pun intended). Hugo, who had really aged in recent years, has come back to life with the companionship of another dog. There’s an extra wag in his tail and the two play tug endlessly. I guess sometimes the right dog appears to you at a messy time. No doubt, it would have been easier to bring him home on a warmer month. We lost some sleep, some Lego pieces, and more than $100 in Christmas lights and extension cords (mistaken as chew toys). We’re still training Chico amidst the chaos of raising young kids. All that said, a year has passed and he has become a part of the family, loved by all of us on most days… and tolerated by my 5-year-old and the cat on other days.

Minus 30, with cabin fever sinking in, is not the ideal environment to bring a new puppy home to. Add to this, the fact that we are notoriously cluttered and already owned a dog, a cat, and eight chickens, and some would say we were setting up for disaster. Nonetheless, such was the environment in our home on the day we had agreed to pick up a 6-month-old puppy named Alfie from the Humane Society Yukon. Sure, we could have postponed due to weather conditions, but I felt a twinge of guilt knowing Alfie had already spent four weeks behind bars; two at the local maximum security facility (aka the Whitehorse Animal Shelter) and two at the local minimum security facility (the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter). So, with our older dog and our cat already fighting over indoor turf, and our kids spreading Lego all over the house, we introduced an untrained, hairy new animal into our home, and, into our family. One of the main reasons we wanted a second dog, was to be a companion for our beloved 9-year old German shepherd cross who, now that we had children, was no longer the “only child”
