Level 42 headlining Let’s Rock Exeter @ Powderham Castle Saturday 1st July 2017 At the beginning of their career, Level 42 was squarely a jazz-funk fusion band, contemporaries of fellow Brit funk groups like Atmosfear, Light of the World, Incognito, and Beggar & Co. By the end of the ‘80s, however, the band - whose music was instantly recognizable from Mark King’s thumb-slap bass technique and associate member Wally Badarou’s synthesizer flourishes - had crossed over to the point where they were often classified as sophisti-pop and dancerock, equally likely to be placed in the context of Sade and the Style Council as any group that made polished, upbeat, danceable pop/rock. The band’s commercial peak came with 1985’s World Machine, but they continued to record and tour sporadically throughout the ‘90s and 2000s. Featuring Mark King (bass, vocals), Phil Gould (drums), Boon Gould (guitar), and Mike Lindup (keyboards), the band formed in 1979. Before they released their first single, “Love Meeting Love,” the band was pushed to add vocals to their music in order to give it a more commercial sound; they complied, with King becoming the lead singer. Released in 1981, their self-titled debut album was a slick soul-R&B collection that charted in the U.K. Top 20, resulting in the release of The Early Tapes. Level 42 had several minor hit singles before 1984’s “The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)”

hit the British Top Ten. Released in late 1985, World Machine broke the band worldwide; “Lessons in Love” hit number one in Britain and “Something About You” hit number seven in America. Their next two records, Running in the Family (1987) and Staring at the Sun (1988), were a big success in the U.K Throughout the remainder of the ‘90s and the 2000s, the band’s lineup fluctuated, with King the lone constant and his brother, guitarist Nathan King, on-board since 2001. Level 42 released a studio album, Retroglide, in 2006. Four years later, the band celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special tour, as well as a box set, Living It Up, which included a disc of fresh acoustic versions recorded by Mark King and Lindup. Level 42 are headlining at Let’s Rock Exeter @ Powderham Castle on Saturday 1st July.

Transition Film Festival Totnes 9th - 12th March 7-9pm

An exciting evening of talks on all aspects of conservation, from local to global, from the zoo to the wild. There will be six inspiring speakers throughout the evening including Paul Martin from Devon Wildlife Trust, Stewart Muir from Save Vietnams Wildlife and Paul Cox from the Sharktrust. The Bikers Make a Difference (BMAD) Festival was started in 2002 by a group of bikers who decided to arrange a social event on the beach and raise money for local charities. Situated within Dartmoor National Park in the heart of Devon’s Teign Valley, the waterfalls tumble down ancient rock formations to meet the lakes below, offering some of the most spectacular waterfall and ancient bluebell woodland scenery in Devon. Chagstock Festival: Soul II Soul to headline Friday night! CHAGSTOCK FESTIVAL organisers have confirmed that British Funk & Soul legends Soul II Soul will headline Friday night! Indian singer-songwriter extraordinaire Raghu Dixit has also been added to the bill, alongside the inimitable Dub Pistols. Soul II Soul need little introduction. Best known for the timeless classics Back To Life and their breakthrough smash hit Keep On Movin’, they’ve sold over 10 million albums, performed live in over 20 countries, and headlined some of the most famous venues in the world, including Wembley. They’ve been recognised throughout their 29year career, winning two Grammies and being nominated for five Brit Awards. Their iconic frontman Jazzie B was awarded an OBE for services to music in the 2008 New Year’s honour’s list, has been given the keys to no less than 5 US cities including LA and New York, and an ironwork sculpture of him stands proudly in his birthplace Finsbury Park as recognition of his contribution and inspiration to the community. Hailing from Bangalore in Southern India, Raghu Dixit’s music is a seamless weaving of Indian ethnic folk, Sufi and classical with other traditional and contemporary influences from across the globe. His lyrics, though intense, are simple and speak about every common man’s emotions and experiences, and his unique songwriting and vocal delivery have earned him a treasured place in the both the traditional and contemporary Folk & World music scenes. Raghu is also a hugely successful film composer, having scored more than 20 movies in five different languages. Led by indefatigable south-Londoner Barry Ashworth, The Dub Pistols have lived every rock n roll cliché more vividly, knowingly and hilariously than almost any other British band. They’ve

burned through record labels, band members, and hundreds of thousands of pounds with their almost heroic devotion to hedonism. Yet they have worked with heroes like The Specials, Busta Rhymes, Horace Andy, Madness and Gregory Isaacs and in this, their 20th Anniversary year, The Dub Pistols are busier than ever, having reinvented themselves as the ultimate Festival band; the go-to act to get a big crowd dancing. Saiichi Sugiyama Band UK Tour Exclusive

Acclaimed blues-rock guitarist Saiichi Sugiyama and his band are touring the UK in March / April 2017 ahead of the release of his new album. He is also confirmed for Planet Rock’s Winter’s End Festival, taking place 24-26 February in Poole. Saiichi’s album will feature the band’s single, ‘Melting Away’ recorded with live strings, which has been described by Classic Rock Magazine as “reminiscent of Free at their most powerful … an emotional slice of blues-rock”. Saiichi was delighted to persuade his long time hero, legendary Free bassist Andy Fraser who wrote the classics “All Right Now” and “My Brother Jake”, to perform on the track not knowing that it was to be one of Andy’s last recordings. Sadly, Andy Fraser passed away in March 2015. Saiichi is an authoritative live performer praised by Moray Stuart of Blues In Britain for providing “a cracking bit of air-conditioned Les Paul action”. Sugiyama has been creating music that harks back to the halcyon days of rock and soul, 1965-1974, when blues bands were in the pop chart and all you needed was love. Potent and melodic, Saiichi’s original material, with many songs written with Cream lyricist Pete Brown, is a standout in today’s UK blues scene. It is what makes the band’s live dates, in the words of Blues DJ Ian McHugh, “a joyous, at once familiar and fresh experience”. Kit Martin of the new-psych band Kit Sebastian opined, “There is no one writing songs like these at the moment.” Sugiyama’s 5-piece touring band will feature the soulful singer Rietta Austin, Ben Reed on bass, Stuart Dixon on rhythm guitar and Wez Johnson on drums.

Since its formation in 1977 with only junior teams, the club has been slowly developing, and is now an established part of the local community with plans to develop further over the coming years.
