tlight on Local Talent - Jamie Darling
Jai has only been singing for a couple of years, but is surprising a few people, as he has always been known as one of the best drummers in the Bay. Jamie started drumming professionally at the age of 13. He originally started out like most kids, on pots and pans! Although Drew Millin (his uncle) tried to teach him guitar, Jai was just interested in drums. At 13 Jamie had his 1st rock band “Once Bitten” along with school mates Adam Price and Dan Gorman. “Once Bitten” quickly joined the local music scene to become the youngest band working in the Devon area. They even had their 1st single “Believer” played on local radio. But came to an end due to Exams etc. It’s also worth mentioning when Jai was 14 he supplied & performed on drums for Jim Davidson’s backing band at an after show party.
After leaving school, Jamie was then offered the position of drummer with local metal band “Mad Hatter”. The band released a self titled album “Mad Hatter” which sold well and even got exposure on Radio 1 and was reviewed in Kerrang magazine. The guy’s also had success with their highly acclaimed E.P “ Hattertude “. After many tours, of the UK and Europe, supporting some big names in the business (Scorpions, Wolfsbane, Girlschool, Whitelion and Paul Di’anno), but split up in 1995. In 2003, Jai took on his 1st lead vocalist part with local Cabaret band ‘ Somethin Else‘, which is where Jai met up with old friend & guitarist Rod Scott. Rod n Jai went on to form Rockology in 2004 which eventually led to recruiting ‘Something Else’ bassist ‘Nigel Pike’ and eventually Paul Matthews on Keys to form CrossFire.
In 2009, Rockology and CrossFire had already become known as two of the best well known acts in the Bay. Jai also started doing some solo gigs as a singer performing (as he puts it himself) The Rock & Pop he likes! And So the Rockology family was extended to not just Rockology / CrossFire but also ..... Jai Rocks One Man Rock Show. Since then Jai has become one of Torbays most recognizable performers and has achieved the status as one of Torbays best and well known vocalists & Drummers. NEWS Colin Reece – Red Wing
This month’s local entertainment news features highly acclaimed local musician Colin Reece and the release of his new album ‘Red Wing’! This is Colins’ first release of original material for ten years. The album features nine previously unreleased tracks and seven rearranged and re-recorded songs from previous years.
Colin has always played a prominent part on the local music scene and over the years has earned a very positive reputation in the South Devon area. In making the album Colin has worked with many talented local artists, including Drew Millin, Karen Hunter, Lindsey Collard and he even managed to rescue some recordings he did with the late great John ‘Smudger’ Smith!
The music flows in a story like fashion which had me captivated from the first song. This is one of the best collections of songs I have heard from a local artists and I would recommend this album to anyone who appreciates good music

Award-winning blend of international and local ballet talent
Award-winning English Youth Ballet (EYB) is coming to Torquay and presenting their haunting ballet Giselle - at the Princess Theatre. Audiences should be prepared for a unique experience. They will be treated to 7 international principal dancers sharing the stage with Devon's young ballet stars of the future. EYB have selected 100 of the most talented young ballet dancers (aged 8-18) to perform in the dramatic story ballet.
Oliver Speers and Emma Lister (pictured) are two of EYB's exquisite principal dancers. Oli previously danced with Ballet du Capitole de Toulouse and will be flying in to dance the leading role of Albert. Emma previously danced with English National Ballet and will dance the role of Giselle.
EYB's dramatic adaptation of the story of Giselle is one of love, betrayal, revenge and murder. It is set in an Edwardian wealthy household. Giselle, the governess, falls in love with a wealthy aristocrat Albert.
Giselle's weak heart is broken and she dies when she finds out that he is already engaged and has been deceiving her. In death, Giselle joins the Wili spirits in the forest. The Wilis are spirits of jilted lovers - who wreak revenge on menfolk who wander into the forest. What will happen when Albert enters the forest?

I was really looking forward to doing this review for many reasons. With each New Year the production improves and Colin Matthews the shows renowned producer, never disappoints with the quality of his productions. However, every year the shows concept will change, there’s new and improved comedy, and every show I have reviewed have its own individual strengths and merits. Not knowing what to expect other than the normal level of progression from the previous years production, it became apparent to me within 20 minutes of the show starting that this had the makings of the most successful show I have ever seen at the Babbacombe Theatre. The quick fire comedy and clever selection of sketches was incredibly well thought out. The opening number ‘Thriller’ set the precedent for the whole evening. Sketches such as “The Who Doctors” and “Floating On” were hilarious and went down a storm. You could tell by the way the whole cast embraced the show with such confidence was down to the strength of the production and the writing. The costumes were stunning and everything felt right for
what was to be a brilliant evening of high-class entertainment. The music has been re-vamped and was played at the perfect volume – to what was nearly a full house – a vast improvement. The comedy highlights of tonight’s performance were without doubt Ben Nickless and Danny Posthill, two great comics with a great future ahead of them. Through the course of the evening they both elevated and rose to the occasion. The dancing was sensational and the choreography was as professional as in any West End show that I have ever seen. The stage set was the best I have seen in years there was a lot of light and shade with great dynamics. Colin has a great ability to set the mood and go from side splitting laughter to something as dramatic as a “Phantom of the Opera” tribute - this kept the audience on the edge of their seats and is the perfect recipe for a fun packed variety show. The vocal performances were outstanding with Holly Cosgrove, Torbay’s Got Talent winner, and X Factor boot camp finalist Eloise Cole. Both delivered outstanding performances and
complimented the whole production, as did the new double act, Elmer & Sampson, a versatile and talented duo. This year I noticed that when the full company were performing there was a great sense of togetherness, which really came out in the production numbers. The Juniorz have also excelled in their performance and I am sure we will see these wonderfully talented children in many shows to come. Stardust is the strongest variety show I have ever seen in the County let alone at the Babbacombe Theatre. The work and attention to detail is evident from start to finish. Everyone who is associated with this show should be very proud of themselves, and from a journalist point of view, I knew by half way through the show, I would be returning as a paying customer later in the season. If you want to go and see an exceptionally high quality production with the best in comedy, singing and dancing this is the show for you.
