THE AUSTRALIAN

SHOW

‘Welcome To The Machine’ 2015 Tour: Celebrating 40 Years of ‘Wish You Were Here’ The Australian Pink Floyd Show is proud to announce that tickets for their 2015 ‘Welcome To The Machine’ European Tour are on sale now. Tickets are available online from gigsandtours.com / ticketmaster.co.uk or by phone on 0844 811 0051 / 0844 826 2826. The tour celebrates 40 years since the release of the landmark album ‘Wish You Were Here’, Pink Floyd’s ninth album, but will draw also heavily from the iconic ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ and ‘The Division Bell’ albums. There will be 22 UK dates on this tour and the band will perform a 2 hour set. The 2015 concerts will offer a true homage to ‘Wish You Were Here’, a true benchmark of musical culture, and a cherry-picking of the whole Floyd oeuvre, delivered by top-notch musicians whose love for Pink Floyd knows no bounds. The Australian Pink Floyd Show are much more than a tribute to the great music of Pink Floyd, and were described by The Times as “the gold standard”. The band capture and convey the spirit as well as the

sound, and slavish attention is lavished upon jaw-dropping staging. The 2015 dates offer a host of brand new visuals and effects and an overhauled technical set-up, resulting simply in a show that is even bigger and even better. The Australian Pink Floyd Show is constantly evolving and honing what they do, having enjoyed 25 years at the top of the game. Sunday Times ‘Culture’ said, “The Aussie Floyd delighted the crowd with a meticulously crafted performance, expensively staged with bright lights, lasers, and, yes, inflatables.” The Birmingham Mail added, “I’d heard that the Aussie Floyd were one of the best tribute acts in the business, but I really wasn’t prepared for how good they actually were”. Put simply, Aussie Floyd recreate the Pink Floyd magic with fidelity, passion and finesse. See you on the road – don’t ‘Wish You Were Here’, secure a ticket now! More info at www.aussiefloyd.com.

The Ashburton Festival

Blues

Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th May 2015 After a two-year break, the weekend event will be bigger, better, and bluesier, with 30 hours of top-class music, more than 20 bands and 60 performers. Located again in the stunning surroundings of Seale-Hayne between Ashburton and Newton Abbot, fans can relax in the beautiful setting of the historic Quad, and watch a range of musicians on two stages during the day. Whether you like your blues Chicago-style, or from a cigar-box guitar, there will be something for everyone: ZZ-Top, or Gypsy Jazz, sultry torch-singer, or full-on rocking Juke Joint Jump. Fans needing a breather will be able to choose from a range of tasty foods and drinks, from snacks to sit-down Bistro meals.

is Back!

No need to book hotels, or go home and back each day, Seale-Hayne offers stylish en-suite rooms, comfortable doubles with shared bathroom facilities, and, if you’re feeling a bit posh, wonderful luxury Glamping, on elevated platforms in a little dell with decks offering lovely views across the glorious countryside. The Festival runs from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th May. Day and weekend tickets will be on sale via www.ashburtonbluesfestival.co.uk (website live in New Year).

In the evening the focus switches to the Yellow Room and the Main Stage where world-class blues will be on offer. The atmosphere in here was electric when we welcomed Eric Bibb, Andy FairweatherLow, and the Animals in 2012. There will be more mouth-watering food and drink available to go with the music.

Status Quo

By Martin Hutchinson

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH FRANCIS ROSSI

A

s usual, it’s been a busy year for Status Quo, a year which culminates in the now-traditional December UK tour. But could this be the last?

The band, which has been fronted by Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt since 1967, has kept up it’s punishing touring schedule throughout the year, appearing around the world on tour and in summer festivals. But there have been a couple of special events in the Quo calendar this year.

And will the Frantic Four reunite again? “No, there’ll be no more.” He says. “We had a talk and came to the conclusion that the personality clashes that helped break up the band before could resurface; but we’ll keep in touch.” (The last show in Dublin has recently been released as a DVD and Live CD.)

Firstly, there was the second reunion tour of The Frantic Four line-up of Francis and Rick together with original bassist and drummer Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan.

The band then caused shockwaves throughout the music industry by releasing, wait for it, an acoustic album. A full album of Quo hits as we’d never heard them before. And it was a hit!

After 30 years apart, this classic line-up reunited in 2013 for a handful of shows. The fans, who had wanted this reunion for years, were ecstatic and clamoured for more. They got it as the foursome reunited for one last time earlier this year for a handful of shows in the UK, ending in Dublin.

“I didn’t fancy it at first.” Explains Francis, 65.

“This year’s shows went much better than the first.” Francis Rossi told me at his London home. 10

“The people loved it, which was the main thing.”

“But then we did some adverts in Australia and did a couple of acoustic songs, and we thought that the melodies were really nice.” So the band took it a stage further and went into the studio.

“Once we got into it, I began to enjoy it. It was both enjoyable and creative.” He continues. “So much so that I got a bit ‘precious’ about it and the concept grew a bit.” The project took longer than originally planned.

“We aren’t sure if we’ll be doing a tour like the December one in 2015.” Says Francis. “The older you get, the more it hurts. Our gigs are quite physical.” He smiles. “I tell people I’m 65 so

“That’s right.” He laughs. “What was supposed to take four to six weeks ended up taking four and a half months.” What was the reason? “The songs got better each time we did them and we kept adding bits, and then we decided on having a real accordion instead of a synthesizer.” Still it was a bit of a gamble. “We were all very pleased with it in the end.” “What helped in the process is that a lot of the songs were actually written using acoustic guitars and having done the live shows I listen to them differently; I find them somehow refreshing.” The gamble paid off and the album has been wellreceived and the band played a one-off show in London which was broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 and on the BBC Red Button. “We were all very nervous about the gig, nobody slept for weeks.” With the traditional December tour coming up, does this mean that Status Quo will be having an acoustic slot in the live shows? The Quo frontman does not hesitate in his answer. “No, not this time. If we are going to do it, we’ll do it properly. I’d rather take it out as it was at the Roundhouse.” So that means that there is a possibility of an acoustic tour?

they say ‘you’re as old as you feel’ and I keep telling ‘em that I f***in’ feel 65.” “But when we sat down to do the acoustic show, it felt very comfortable. So that may be the way to keep the band going to the 50th anniversary in 2017.” And of course, we have the December tour and this year, the Quo’s special guests are Chas and Dave. Francis says. “I have always had the greatest respect for Chas and Dave. Normally I don’t like the London accent in singing, but they make it listenable.” “I particularly like ‘Ain’t No Pleasing You’, it’s a great song.” And as for Quo? “We’ll be doing what we do best, with all the greatest Quo hits, plus we may put in three or four of the songs we did on the Frantic Four gigs.” Such as? “Oh, things like ‘Oh Baby’ and ‘Little Blue Eyed Lady’, stuff like that alongside the songs like ‘Caroline’, ‘Down Down’ and of course ‘Rockin’ All Over the World’.” “It’s gonna be a great night.” He concludes.

“The signs are good though.”

The ‘Status Quo Live In Concert’ UK Winter tour, with special guests Chas and Dave, is coming to the Plymouth Pavilions on Monday 15th December, Cardiff Motorpoint Arena on Tuesday 16th December & Bournemouth International Centre on Thursday 18th December.

As time goes on, the band aren’t getting any younger and a sit-down acoustic tour may be the way to keep Status Quo on the road for a bit longer.

Tickets are priced at £39.50 (plus booking fee) and are available from the Box Office and all the usual agencies.

“We’ll see how the album does into the New Year and if it continues to do well then we may do some ‘test’ gigs in the spring.”

The Curtain Falls @ the Palace Theatre,Paignton 27th & 28th March 2015

We managed to catch up with Steve Laister and found out how he also helps people who have lost someone special in their lives, and to discuss the forthcoming pantomime gig for 7 weeks in Southend with David Hasslehoff and Christopher Biggins! JS: Hello young man, thank you for sparing the time to allow us to chat today. SL: It’s a pleasure and thank you for calling me young! JS: Well I wouldn’t say you look old, but perhaps that’s because of your job? You are probably Torbay’s best known comedian. Does making people laugh keep you young at heart? SL: That’s a great question, I don’t think of myself as being solely a comedian, I get paid to entertain people, actually that sounds wrong too, I make a living by singing songs and telling slightly exaggerated stories about myself. I am very very lucky. Does my job make me happy myself? I think mostly it does but a lot of entertainers struggle themselves to be happy all the time and in a lot of cases it tends to send them the other way. I think it carries the same pressures as most regular jobs but putting on a happy face on stage just confirms the old adage that people generally believe what they see.

21

JS: Well, whatever it is you are doing don’t stop because you certainly help an awful lot of people feel better about themselves, be it from on the stage or as we hear off stage as well, which is one of the subjects I would like to talk about today. SL: If, when I’m on stage, I can make people forget about their problems even for a short time, then I am doing my job. It’s important to have fun and make people laugh out loud but it’s also nice towards the end to throw in a few prophetic lines to make people think. We are all really lucky and if I can get just one member of the audience waking up the next day with a more positive attitude then yes, that makes me happy. JS: As we said, it is with your time off stage that you help people too, you sing live at funerals!! I mean you can’t get a bigger contrast. SL: Yes, it has become quite a regular occurrence now, I have sung at dozens of funerals for family and close friends but also for people who I have never met! It’s mainly due to a song I wrote for the Children’s Hospice South West, the song seems to help people get through this extremely difficult time and also it gives them some hope that even though they may have lost someone close, they are really not alone. JS: What is the song called? SL: Playground In The Sky. It’s not just that song I sing at funerals, I’ll sing, within reason, any song that is requested, but Playground In The Sky is very very special in these difficult times. JS: And you say you wrote the song yourself? SL: Yes, all the lyrics and the melody came from myself but the musical score was created by Will Penney, I also had the honour of singing it in New York on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, that was a very special moment as well as singing it on the midnight walks for the Children’s Hospice South West. That is 22

really hard; you have all of the families who have lost young children standing in front of you with candles, holding each other and listening to my words. I defy anyone not to be moved. It’s really tough, but afterwards when those same families come up to me and tell me that they play the song daily as it helps them get through, it is the greatest gift and it’s nice knowing that you don’t have to be on stage to put a smile on peoples faces. JS: We’ve heard the song, it is very moving. Now this year is a big year for you because you have been invited to perform alongside two legends David Hasslehoff and Christopher Biggins? SL: Ha Ha, yes, I was headhunted by Qdos, the biggest panto company in the country and I will be playing the comic for nearly 7 weeks in their production of Peter Pan in Southend. JS: That’s a pretty big deal SL: It’s a massive gig and who knows where it might lead. I’m pretty happy down here though so not really chasing rainbows, just doing my job but what a great job it is. JS: Have you worked with them before? SL: No, I got close to celebrity once when I won the UK’s biggest comedy competition a few years ago. It was Sir Norman Wisdom’s award for comedy excellence and my prize was a slot on the Des O’Connor show! Unfortunately the series I was due to appear on got cancelled due to the fact that Des, (who was 73 at the time), got his 4th wife, (who was nearly 40 years younger), pregnant! He then decided he wanted to be at home during the pregnancy as he hadn’t been home at that time for any of his previous 4 children!! JS: So you blame Des O’Connor for ruining your big break on television? SL: I blame Des O’Connor for everything hahaha. No, not al all. Fate has been pretty kind to me and I have no regrets on who I am or

how I have lived my life. I have made some massive fundamental errors but also been lucky enough to have had some amazing experiences. Southend with the Stars will just be another great chapter when I write my book. JS: So when can Torbay see you back on stage down here? SL: Well at the end of March 2015, Dean Winters and I are performing the play ‘The Curtain Falls’ at the Palace Theatre in Paignton. We are very proud of this as it was our first straight acting role and we also wrote the play ourselves. Then, after the summer show at the Palace I will be headlining with Dean in The Two Ronnies Sketchbook in September. This is a tribute to the great songs and sketches of Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker and will include some very special guests too. JS: Well I will look forward to those productions and also look forward to hearing some stories from Southend. Thanks Steve. SL: Thank you Jamie, really appreciate the chat. Happy Christmas mate and to all your millions of readers too.

Ideal way to buy a dream home Laura Mapplebeck and Chris Turp have nothing but praise for the Cavanna Homes sales team who helped them move in to their dream home together.

now, and once the new road opens Chris will only have a 25-minute drive. Kingskerswell is great for commuting, and when the new road opens we’ll be able to spend even more time together in our lovely new home.”

The couple chose a Constable-style property at Kings Field in Kingskerswell, and used the Help to Buy scheme to get a mortgage, taking advantage of a Shared Equity Loan from the Government.

Laura is happy to sing the praises of the Cavanna sales team. “Sue Eden, the Kings Field sales advisor, has been our rock,” she said: “She’s been fantastic, helping us every step of the way. The Help to Buy team have been brilliant too, always keeping us up to date with how things have been going.

Laura works in Preston, and Chris in Ashburton, so their new home is ideally situated for them both. And when the new South Devon Link Road – also known as the Kingskerswell bypass – opens, hopefully next year, they’ll be able to spend even more time in their beautiful house.

“Everyone has been so helpful. I would recommend Cavanna Homes to anyone – 100 per cent!”

“Our new home is exactly what we were looking for,” said Laura. “It’s a two-bedroom house, and the Help to Buy scheme was ideal. It’s given us the opportunity to buy our first home. “Kingskerswell is a really nice place, and the style of the new house is beautiful, it’s amazing. It’s a two-bedroom house, with two really big double bedrooms, both with en-suites. And there’s another WC downstairs for guests, so it’s ideal. “The garden is just amazing, much bigger than I imagined, it’s absolutely stunning and very private with good fencing. “My family is from Preston, and I work there too, and Chris’s family is from Ashburton, where he works. My work is just 10 minutes up the road

Cavanna Homes is an approved Help to Buy builder. Potential purchasers need only come up with a five per cent deposit on a property worth up to £600,000, and the Government then supplies a Shared Equity Loan of up to 20 per cent of the value of the home. That means that buyers only need to find a 75 per cent mortgage from a commercial lender. The Shared Equity Loan can be repaid at any time, or when the house is later sold.

For more details on Help to Buy, see the Cavanna Homes website www.cavannahomes.co.uk, email info@cavannahomes.co.uk, or call Cavanna Homes on 01803 618678. For more information please visit the Kings Field show home and sales office open Thursday to Monday, 10am-5pm or call 01803 873017. 45
