Who’s Looking After Your Oil? With the global rise in oil prices theft of Heating oil continues to be a growing problem, according to AVIVA insurance a typical oil tank, when full, contains over £1600 worth of oil, with easy access to fuel stored above ground it’s little wonder thieves are targeting our domestic tanks. To help remove the threat to your tank, Oilalert will supply and fit an Oil Level Alarm, if the oil level in your tank drops dramatically, an alarm will sound in your house to alert you to the possibility of your oil being stolen, the technology is wireless allowing you to position the receiver in a room of your choice. Thieves who target oil tanks have

no regard for the financial suffering and inconvenience they cause the householder or the environmental risk they pose of oil pollution to the ground, which is often very costly to clean up. In addition to an oil level alarm consider using security lights, planting shrubs screening the tank and be vigilant, if you see something suspicious call the Police immediately. Current March offer £140 (includes fitting and vat), for more information or to order your oil alarm call 0845 519 6492 or visit www.oilalert.co.uk

George Clarke George Clarke is an architect, writer, lecturer, and one of the most successful property TV presenters on UK television. After making three successful series of Build A New Life for Five from 2003 to 2006, George became the face of architecture at Channel 4 with the launch of The Home Show in 2008, Restoration Man in 2009, and the recent campaign series The Empty Homes Show on Channel 4. George’s design talent and passion for beautiful buildings has transformed the homes and lives of so many people across Britain. George was born and raised in Sunderland and from the age of 12 wanted to be an architect. After studying architecture at the University of Newcastle and University College London, George started his own practice, Clarke:Desai, with business partner Bobby Desai. Their portfolio included innovative residential, cultural and urban design projects across the world. In 2011 George left Clarke:Desai to set up his new company George Clarke & Partners. George is a Celebrity Ambassador for The Ideal Home Show which takes place at Earls Court from 15 March - 1 April. - 23 -

What’s On Magazine met up with Celebrity Ambassador George Clarke to talk about this years show. George, could you explain your role at the Ideal Home Show? Well it has changed slightly and I think that Media 10 who are the company that run the show want me to front it now. My official title is ‘Ambassador’ for the show. I think it is mostly because I do a lot of home improvements and re design of homes. I used to go to the show as a child with my uncle, he had a garage door company so he exhibited at the show and I would come down and help him set up, so it is a bit mad that I am now fronting the whole show. This year we have a much bigger demonstration theatre at the show rather than the smaller theatres they had scattered around previously. The show is much on a grander scale than before. How often are you there at the show? I think I am there about 10 days out of the 17 days the show runs, so quite a lot really. I am doing most of the weekends because obviously they are the busiest times but I have lots of other key events in the week. Do you get lots of people coming up to you with questions? Yes I get mobbed at the show but in a nice way. You get a whole range of people there, some just want a picture or an autograph and then you have others that will come up to me with plans for their latest project and want my opinion.

Plus this year you can see a very special interiors makeover on a famous TV home. So join Alan Titchmarsh, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Gregg Wallace, George

You must keep in touch with the latest products anyway in the building trade, but do you get any ideas yourself from the show? Yes, it’s good that it keeps you up to speed with the latest products, even though I am fairly familiar with most of the latest things on the market. There are always new things that surprise me, especially things like gadgets which I am a keen fan of. That side of the business changes so quickly that you will always learn something from the show. I always look forward to the food section and the Champagne Bar as well. Is there anything particular that you are looking forward to on your side of the show? The show houses are key and they are always a very important part of the show and of

25/02/2013 14:06:52

course we have the Princes House. There is also a modern style Scandinavian house. Last year we reconstructed the Coronation Street house. This year we are recreating and improving the flat from Only Fools and Horses. Who would have thought it, Del and Rodneys apartment being given a makeover. It’s a bit of fun but it taps into some quite serious issues such as the problems you come across living in small spaces. It’s a tiny living room and bedroom and I have redesigned it to make the space work more efficiently. We have also put it some clever multi functional products such as a fold down bed and other things which means the room can be reconfigured for other uses. Nowadays people are buying much more affordable smaller flats and houses to get themselves on the property ladder so this shows how well you can make those spaces work. My most recent programme called ‘Amazing Spaces’ was all about small scale stuff so my job at the show here has followed on nicely from that. Are you good at the interior design as well as the structural side? I think you have to be. A lot of the time people don’t really know what architects do, they think we just look at space and move a few walls around but actually for the last 20 years I have been designing peoples homes and personal spaces so you quite quickly have to learn about the finishes and the best products to use. This takes in colours and wallpapers so to me it’s a blurry line between architecture and interior design. In my business we do the whole thing. You are am ambassador for the Princes Foundation, what does that involve? I think Prince Charles gets a lot of bad press from the architectural profession, he has had his disagreements in the past with the Royal Institute of British Architects but actually I think if you look at what the Prince actually says, it is all about sustainable design and ecological design for long term use. What it has come down to is the battle of the styles really. The Prince believes that more traditional architecture is more sympathetic to the environment. I think that in any situation it’s about what’s right and what’s appropriate. Some traditional architecture can be pastiche and horrible where as some modern designs can end up looking like your living in an office block rather than a home. I try not to get involved in that argument. I think that both the Prince and the RIBA are pushing for the same thing but they just have different points of view on style. In some ways I think that battle of the style is a waste of energy and sometimes it’s just a cheap easy way for the press to get a story. Designers and architects have always argued throughout history but that what leads to a diversity of style.

The Prince of Wales works unbelievably hard for his charities, obviously not single handed as he has a great team working with him, but I read that his charity raised nearly £130 million pounds last year which is unbelievable. If you look at other events like Comic Relief who raise £60 or £70 million and we all think it’s a major success, singing it from the roof tops where as the Prince does it in a quiet and reserved way without all the publicity. The Princes Foundation teaches traditional crafts and skills which represent a lot of things we have lost. You just have to look at my projects on Restoration Man where English Heritage and Conservation Officers were trying to encourage traditional methods of restoring ancient buildings but obviously needed those skills around to be able to do it.

What current projects are you working on at the moment? The range is just mad which is what makes everyday different for me. I work in my office which is sort of a one stop shop for everything to do with buildings. We have an architectural practice, a building company and I have also got a small development company so we buy our own buildings and do them up. I am currently making series 2 of Amazing Spaces which I start filming next week. Recently I have been filming for series 4 of Restoration Man which will come out in January 2014. Series 5 has already been commissioned and will come out in January 2015. I have taken on a new position with the government advising on housing in general which lead on from the empty homes work that I did last year. The aim is to raise the standards of the building and construction of homes as well as the design standards.

- 25 -

have got a really old building that has been constructed for a really completely different use, then it is exciting to take those on, that’s what Restoration Man was all about, taking on these buildings that were often used for industrial, cultural, military or sometimes even religious use and transforming them into homes and breathing new life into them. I think it is mad that quite often it can be so difficult to get change of use agreements in the planning process. Before the planning restrictions started coming in we used to change the use of buildings all the time. A shop became a pub and a pub became a restaurant and then it got converted to a house.

Of course I still do things like the Ideal Home Show and Grand Designs Live so there is lots to keep me busy.

of British designs and British homes. I do enough travelling for T.V. so I don’t want to be doing anymore.

Where are you living at the moment? I had a 1910 Edwardian house but I am always looking to do new projects so I have just brought a house further out in West London which is a much bigger house and garden. As soon as I finish one house I start twitching and looking forward to the next one. I have got a wife and three children so the extra space will be good for them, they have lived on a building site for most of their lives so I hope it doesn’t put my children off the architecture and building business too much.

Who are your clients, is it businesses or private individuals? Mostly private individuals. We do get involved with occasional businesses but we don’t do a lot of big commercial work. If I do an office refurbishment project it is normally for someone whose house I have just been working on. First and foremost we represent residential domestic architecture. I have recently worked on a few gallery projects

Is most of your work in the UK or do you anything abroad? I don’t do a lot abroad but some of my private clients have properties abroad, so occasionally I am working on European projects. I don’t do these as development projects or for me personally because I just enjoy working in Britain. I am a huge fan

I read that you had just purchased a Victorian Pumping house to renovate, is that correct? That was something that I was in the process of buying in County Durham, I really wanted to get my hands on it, but one of the problems is that when my name is mentioned the price doubles, so I had to pull out. There is sometimes a downside to my job as well. I love doing up old buildings and reinventing traditional buildings. If you

Has planning become any easier recently to encourage development? I have always been quite an outspoken critic of planning in the past, because I think it’s been really small minded. I have always found it ridiculous that for example there is an argument over whether a dorma window should be a particular size. When you look across our cities there is so much variation in style and size you think, does it really matter? Obviously if it’s a conservation area or a listed building I completely understand. I strongly support the building regs. which is a different thing. These are such a good standard in the UK and ensure that we are not building sub standard quality homes. It’s just the red tape behind planning that drives me mad. It’s an unnecessary and expensive obstruction. In fairness to the current government they are trying to turn that on its head but of course nothing ever happens quickly enough in government. Instead of having a document which is a thousand pages, they are having a National planning policy which is only about 50 pages. They are also making some brave moves allowing B1 offices to be turned into residential houses without having to go through planning. Without a doubt that is going to be a fantastic stimulus to the economy because there is a huge amount of office space around which is unused. There is such a demand for housing that this is a just a great thing to do and it’s letting the market determine what an area needs rather than planners trying to do it. The market adjusts to what local areas need which is how it should be. Do you get involved with your garden at all? No I leave that to the professionals. I have worked with Alan Titchmarsh a lot and he is fantastic. If I ever need advice for my garden I will go to him. I have got a 200ft garden in my new house so I will need as much help as I can get. I can hardly tell the difference between a Rose and a Daffodil.

Thank You George

Sussex Rocks is a family owned organisation whose aim is to bring together youngsters from the ages of 10 – 18 for a week of music making and fun. It is open to guitarists, bass guitarists, drummers, vocalists, and keyboard players in the main but other musicians are most welcome. Last year we had an amazing young sax player and a violinist. We understand that there are many youngsters out there who all have their individual weekly music lessons but many of them never get the opportunity to perform with other musicians as part of a live band. This is such an important aspect of learning any instrument as being with others not only gives confidence but greatly improves their playing as they bounce ideas between each other and learn to make group decisions. We find the advantage of having the 10-18 age range is that the younger members get really inspired by the older members who themselves are more than willing to give a helping hand or a word of advice. This makes for a great atmosphere throughout the week. Our expert tutors are there to guide you in all aspects of your playing and there is always an opportunity to try an instrument you have not previously played. In fact last year one of our acoustic guitarists was playing bass by the end of the week. Participants will perform in small groups and play the music they want to play and if they are interested they can write and perform their own music. We cover all styles of music from rock, pop, folk, blues, electric and acoustic. Throughout the week we offer several masterclasses in various techniques and students can choose to participate in all or just those which interest them. Details of these can been seen on our webiste www.sussexrocks.org.uk. We always have a fantastic end of week gig for family and friends so that the youngsters can show off their skills. The cost is £150 for the whole week

Health, Fitness & Beauty O

ur bodies are exposed to many different types of pollutions and toxins, mixed with people’s poor diets and life habits, all these toxins get stored in the bowel. The large intestine gets congested with sticky material that impacts on the bowel wall, killing friendly bacteria and causing all different problems from candida, bloating, smelly wind, lethargicness, bad skin, to more serious problems including bowel cancer. Even if you open your bowels regularly and have a good diet your system will still benefit. The treatment involves a mini sterilised stainless steel scope that is inserted into the rectum, a water and outlet tube are attached and while laying on your back covered with a towel, warm water is gently flushed into the colon and encourages faeces, toxins and gas to be released. The treatment lasts for approximately 45 minutes, when it has finished you go to the toilet. It’s non smelly, non painful treatment and really isn’t that bad! I was very nervous about having colon hydrotherapy, I didn‘t really know what to expect, but Lucy explained the treatment well and made me feel very relaxed. She also advised me on my diet. I‘ve had 4 treatments now and my bowel movements are regular for the first time in years. I am a lot more confident about my diet and I am really pleased I plucked up the courage to go. Lucy also showed me some iridology which involves the analysis of patterns and structures in the iris of the eye....very interesting. Laura.H

Sandy Verona has been practicing as a multi disciplinary therapist for more than 20 years, for much of that time she was working on the Oncology wards of the Westminster and Charing Cross Hospitals and The Harley Street Clinic. Sandy’s knowledge and experience enables her to source the most appropriate solution for her client’s needs. I recently went along to the Iden Therapy Centre where Sandy is based to experience a reflexology treatment. The centre is located just outside Iden village in a beautifully tranquil setting with amazing views of open countryside. The converted dairy building makes an ideal location to visit with easy parking right outside. I found Sandy very knowledgeable and professional in her approach, she explained the areas of the body which responded to pressure points on my feet and possible problem areas which may need to be addressed. Sandy used a lavender and aloe vera relaxing massage lotion from the Forever Living Products range. I found the whole experience very rewarding and uplifting and would not hesitate to recommend Sandy to anyone. Anna Townsend What’s On Editor.

Equine Enlightenment: Horses have the ability to mirror exactly what human body language is telling them. Horses often appear to be stubborn and we work with them to help us understand our own emotions. Horses are very sensitive animals and will respond according to the person handling them. This means that when we are able to overcome an emotion the horse’s response will change. Individual Therapy: You will not ride the horse at any time, all the work takes place on the ground. We will talk you through what you need to do and discuss how you are feeling during and after the activities. If at anytime you prefer, you can move into the indoor counselling room to talk. Group Therapy: A group of up to six participants experience individual sessions with horses, group therapy with Professor Dryden and detailed knowledge of how horse and human psychology differs and how we can learn from those differences.

Operations Manager Janet Rayfield talks about Glottenham Nursing Home

T

he staff group at Glottenham are among the happiest and most committed that I have had the pleasure of working with throughout my 30 year career. The staff perform their daily tasks with laughter, dignity and commitment. The bond that they have with Glottenham and the people who live there is just inspiring. The other special thing I find at Glottenham is the support that is shown by the relatives, who are always welcome and whom support the staff and the home. Glottenham Manor has recently been working hard with the community to be able to offer services that make a difference to local people. After realising that one of our residents was finding the journey to Brighton for his Dialysis extremely difficult, we worked with the Dialysis Department to have a machine fitted here at Glottenham, we then trained our nurses thus enabling us to offer this service in-house. We are currently working forward to enable us to offer this service to other local residents so they do not have to travel so far for their treatment. We have also have been working closely with the local Cardiac nurse to offer IV treatment to local residents. Glottenham offers nursing care to a variety of people of different ages with different medical problems, the age range of our residents vary from 54 years to 99 years, this works extremely well with care and activities tailored individually for all. Glottenham Manor is a beautiful period building which dates back to 1890. It has over the years had some new extensions but the main building is still quaint with lots of original features. We have 40 en-suite rooms which include some larger newly refurbished rooms as well as some smaller rooms in the older part of the building.

The home is going through a planned refurbishment programme which will include upgrading communal areas as well as bedrooms, but with no plans to increase the number of beds available, we are concentrating on just improving what we have in this friendly happy home. We have just completed our entrance, where we have concentrated on making more space while keeping the decor in keeping with the period house. In summary Glottenham offers excellent care by happy enthusiastic staff at a price that is affordable and fair.

Please visit www.pressbeau.co.uk/glottenham or ring 01580 880212 for enquiries or to visit the nursing home.

Dementia care‌. in St Leonards Following an extensive refurbishment programme Lauriston has just opened a new space for people with dementia in our welcoming and impressive care home. Members of our staff team are specially trained in dementia care to deliver the appropriate type of attention and support to each individual in our home. We provide a number of opportunities for people with dementia to harness their happy memories and sense of self. Through music, creative activities, a reminiscence area with photographs and various personal possessions, we open up alternative ways for people with dementia to communicate and express themselves. Each of our residents has a beautiful private room all of which are en suite. Our wide range of food is freshly cooked by our own in house chef, and we are proud of our

landscaped gardens and patio areas, tea bars and lounges and welcoming other communal areas for people to meet friends and family. If someone you love has dementia, contact Helena Barrow, our Home Manager, who will be able to help you find out more about how we can help‌and care. PETERHOUSE

- A dynamic & energetic living environment

Newly opened in the Summer of 2008 the new Peterhouse Day Care Centre is attached to the well established residential care and independent living centre run by NABS - The National Advertising Benevolent Society. Those using the Day Care facilities do not need to have any connections with the industry to use the extensive facilities on offer which also provides support for both clients and their families. We were shown around the well equipped centre and the Care Manager explained ‘we are introducing new activities all the time and although we have our own employees which include two support workers and a support coordinator, we are always looking for volunteers to help out as well, even

a few hours a week makes all the difference. We have had lots of good comments from our visitors which makes it all the more rewarding for our staff.’ A two course hot lunch is included each day and there is also a luncheon club where both visitors and their families can come along together at a cost of £5.50 per person. The Day Centre is used for a variety of respite needs whether it’s half a day a week or several days at a time which can be linked to an overnight stay at Peterhouse, something quite unique which is difficult to find elsewhere. The kitchen is always a hive of activity with lots of baking and food preparation always on the menu. Those wishing for a more relaxing break can take advantage of the recent therapeutic treatments on offer including reflexology and chiropody.
