Behind the pages. This issue, we would like to introduce to you Kalinda Colley, a local young lady studying Journalism and Law at Newcastle University, who we are excited to have join our team as a freelance writer...

Name: Kalinda Colley Lives: Corlette Age: 20 Contribution to magazine: Writing

How did you come to start working with the magazine? I found out about the magazine through the Salamander Bay Community Centre. Being in the final year of the journalism aspect of my degrees, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get some work published and have some experience in the real world of journalism.

Who would be your dream interview and why? Che Guevara or Nelson Mandela. They are such incredibly inspirational individuals. Both are faces of revolution and change, and continue to be used as a source of inspiration and power. How did they have the persistence and motivation to continually push for change, despite the challenges that continually arose?

What do you enjoy most about this role? I love being able to pursue articles that aren’t pushed or forced through uni. It allows me to have my own input or flare on articles, while being able to contribute to my own community. Also I have met some incredible, incredible people with amazing stories. It’s quite inspirational.

Name three things you do to relax when you find some ‘ME’ time? Generally when I have spare time, or need to relax I like to spend it with others. I love spending time with my mum, brother and boyfriend, they are truly my best friends and there’s never a dull moment. I love playing soccer, it clears my head, and always provides a laugh. And I love a good picnic at the beach.

What made you decide to study journalism? I just love society. I love the way people interact with each other and the influence of the media on our daily lives. My biggest interest is in the law and how that interacts with the media. So I think choosing to do law and journalism combined really just fit my interests, and they have ended up being a perfect match. What is the most interesting story you have worked on? I did a profile on a man once who has died three separate times on the operating table. He has had the most incredible life, overcoming racial discrimination and the depression, among other things. It’s amazing how many interesting stories you can hear if you just ask.

www.whatsoninourbackyard.com.au

What’s the most important thing you carry in your handbag? My diary! I would be so unorganised without it. What’s the first thing you did when you got up this morning? Went to the gym. If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower? The power to stop time. I would be able to fit more into a day that way. Anything else you want to add? I am really excited to explore the world that journalism will open for me while I finish the final two years of my law degree, with the opportunity to combine both in the future.

From Real Estate

to Real Success by Kalinda Colley

‘I have a sister that’s 7 years younger than me and the kids at the school don’t know who’s the oldest.’ Working the room, Katrina Becker’s bubbly personality shines. Her incredible smile, portraying her outgoing nature as she provides tips, knowledge and a relaxed atmosphere. Beauty products speckle the Pacific Dunes function room as Katrina holds one of her Arbonne interactive makeup master classes. Women of a variety of ages are learning makeup techniques and tips, and trying a range of Arbonne products with Katrina and Shane Salgalis, the regional vice president. It is clear; Katrina believes in the botanical, vegan beauty products she is endorsing. After giving up her full-time real estate career for the birth of her second daughter, now 5, Katrina commenced work in her husband’s business, before she started her Arbonne career. ‘I started looking for something else. This came along and it was just perfect, because I could work it around the girls.’ Katrina says the start-up was relatively stress-free. ‘I was given a sample pack by Shane… I found out about the products. I really loved them… and thought I may as well give it a go.’ She states that support is a factor in her success, ‘the training is amazing and the support that you get… everyone just wants to help everyone which is amazing. So we can all succeed together.’ Relocating her family from Valentine to Medowie two years ago, Katrina launched her business, and has, since, secured a loyal client base throughout Port Stephens. With amazing products and a large clientele, Katrina says she holds in-house Swiss Beauty Workshops or FUNSHOPS every week. Interactive master classes, like the one held at Pacific Dunes, generally occur four times a year. Katrina says the opportunities provided by Arbonne, allowed her to both replace her real estate income and have the flexibility to work around her children, while volunteering both at her kids’ school and for local charities.

Continuing to achieve in the industry, Katrina sees the future as an opportunity for more growth, allowing her husband to give up his business and become a personal trainer. In professional terms, Katrina plans to ‘keep expanding… meeting beautiful new people and bringing on some great team members.’

Another perk of the job - Katrina is well on track to being presented with her very own Mercedes Benz. After reaching regional vice president; the second highest level within Arbonne, ‘you are given a white Mercedes.’ Experiencing success as an area manager, Katrina will soon become a regional vice president and be presented with the covenant reward. She attributes her success to her natural personality. ‘I try not to sell the product but more educate people on our products because of the safe side of it, being completely botanical, with no nasty chemicals. That’s what I’m really passionate about, that it has no nasty chemicals… and they don’t test on animals.’ She jokingly calls herself, ‘a bit of an animal freak.’ Katrina says the product virtually sells itself. ‘I just love it. I love what it’s done for my skin.’ Arbonne is a Swiss Health and Wellness company that produces completely botanical, organic and beneficial makeup and skincare products. The products have boomed in Australia and are continuing to increase their clientele. They are pure, safe and beneficial, containing no nasty chemicals or unsafe formulas. Selfless

Support by Kalinda Colley

Sarah is an incredible inspiration. A busy mum of four, a hairdresser and volunteer at the kids' school. She loves craft, scrapbooking and yoga. She and her husband also donate to animal welfare charities. But, there is something else, something she holds close to her heart. She is the founder of Port Stephens Women’s Cancer Support Group. A group providing emotional and physical support for women throughout their journey. The group was founded in 2012 by Sarah and a friend and supports women in Port Stephens throughout their treatment. It focuses on the non-conventional treatments, while encouraging a healthy lifestyle to both treat and prevent cancer. Inspired by her own fight with breast cancer, Sarah set out to help others and explore preventative treatment. Sarah says that whilst going through her breast cancer journey, having a support group was extremely helpful. But this needed to be available to all. ‘It was great because we had the breast cancer support group. But there were a lot of other women with different cancers that didn’t have the support here in the Bay… So that’s when I thought we really need a support group for all women’s cancers, not just breast, so we don’t have to turn anybody away,’ Sarah explained. The group was formed under The Cancer Council, providing emotional support and health guidance for sufferers. Recently, they have obtained funding, meaning they are able to provide physical support in a range of forms. Sarah says that funding means the group can now ‘provide or assist with transport to and from treatment in Newcastle, mow the lawn, clean the house…even walk the dog and take care of the children.’ Reflecting on her own journey, she says physical support is just as important as emotional support. Continually remembering her own fight, and the incredible support she received, Sarah says the group is her only focus. Devoting her time to researching non-conventional methods to assist in the treatment of cancer, she believes that healthy eating and exercise are truly the key. ‘What we’re trying to do

Left to right: (standing) Cathy, Gráinne, (sitting) Joan, Sarah + Lynne

is give women the knowledge to look after themselves. If you are able to exercise every day, just a little bit, it doesn’t have to be strenuous, then that’s great.’ During their monthly support meetings, held at Salamander Bay Natural Health Service, the group often hears guest speakers from a range of fields, for example reiki and yoga. Sarah welcomes anyone to the group, saying it would be amazing to have people just show up and support the women, with even the smallest bit of support making a difference. She says that having the community on board is fantastic, with interest from local businesses to hold fundraisers for the group. She is currently organising a movie night in conjunction with Curves and hopes to really get the community behind it, to provide women with as much knowledge as she can, to give them the best chance. While continually aiming to provide exceptional emotional and physical support for women throughout their journeys, Sarah has bright plans for the future. ‘I would really love to see some sort of wellness centre here in the Bay… a place for both men and women,’ she says. The wellness centre would provide information on how to look after yourself, with an approach that emphasises on the whole person, body, mind and spirit, and would explore a number of different health options, in conjunction with the conventional medicines provided by hospitals. Sarah says getting the centre up and running in the next few years would be amazing, so that she can ‘help people to help themselves…that’s a really nice thing to do.’ Port Stephens Women’s Cancer Support Group is run by local volunteers and meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month between 10am-12noon. For more information, contact Sarah; Ph: 0434 109 841 Email: sarah.litten@yahoo.com.au.

Make Sure it’s Just A Freckle Chemmart Nelson Bay have launched a revolutionary skin cancer screening service called Spotcheck. This allows an individual to get up to three spots of concern checked by experts without appointment. According to a recent study conducted by Chemmart nearly 40% of 7000 people surveyed rarely or never check their own skin for moles or spots of concern. Of those that do more than 40% have a mole or a spot they are worried about. Skin Cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers. The incidence of skin cancer in Australia is one of the highest in the world with two in three Australians being diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70. Spotcheck enables people to have their moles or skin spots photographed in a Chemmart pharmacy by trained staff and be sent away for analysis by doctors who are experts in skin cancer medicine.

The results are then provided to the customer within 48 hours. If any spots of concern are discovered the customer is personally contacted by the doctor and advised to see their GP for further treatment. Being able to walk into a Chemmart pharmacy without an appointment to get those niggling concerning spots checked will not only provide peace of mind but may also save a life. The service requires no appointment and only takes a few minutes. It provides assessment of one to three moles or skin spots starting at $35.00. If the customer has more than three spots of concern they will be recommended to see their GP or a skin cancer clinic. Food Comas & Christmas Let the YMCA Help The festive season is here, and that means Santa is coming, but along with Santa comes the Christmas hams, turkey, sweets and beverages. Suddenly the urge to go to the gym is replaced by the necessity to consume as much food as possible, as it’s the holiday season and this is your ‘pass’ to put healthy living and eating aside. However, the key element is finding the balance between all these aspects, as nourishment for your body is critical. Without adequate rest, neurological pathways can become disrupted, muscular fatigue becomes more consistent, and the lack of motivation is now a major factor. Treating yourself to the holiday season is one of the best recharging factors that you can utilize during this period, but don’t abuse this festive period. Be mindful of all the hard work you have put in this year. A couple of visits to the gym over the festive period will save some agonizing pain on your return. Simple and easy solutions to help minimize this effect, whilst incorporating the spirit of the festive season, can be quite manageable. Incorporating outdoor activities allows the whole family to engage in physical activity without consciously being aware that you’re exercising. Taking the family to the beach or the park for the day is another great strategy to celebrate this festive period, whilst expelling calories. Being out of the home, will only allow you to consume the food that you have brought, rather then having the ease of going to the cupboard/fridge because you can. It becomes too appealing and enticing to rest and relax over the Christmas period, and we completely agree. This is the time to enjoy yourself, but not over indulge. If you are going to sit down to a big family meal, limit your times of consumption.

The body has a better ability to expel excess calories if they are consumed earlier on in the day (brunch or lunch), compared to right before bed. Consuming large quantities of food prior to sleeping will result in the body storing these excess calories, as you won’t be expelling them as efficiently as you would during the day. Another major factor to excess weight gain over the festive period, is the consumption of alcohol. Alcohol can be a detrimental factor, especially during those hot summer days, that can aid in the process of dehydration and increase in body weight. The major key factor to consider over the festive period is moderation. Limit your alcohol consumption, drink plenty of water, consume Christmas meals at the beginning of the day and incorporate fun and games into your day of celebration. By all means, we are not telling you to not enjoy yourself, but do everything in moderation. This will reduce that sickly full feeling that would have occurred if you had consumed that enormous Christmas lunch. FREE VISITS FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY! The YMCA would like to help you celebrate this time of the year, so we are offering free visits for the entire family over the holiday period. A great way to enjoy a brief period of exercise and rest from those ‘food comas’ from Christmas, before more festivities start before the New Years. Fitness & Fun for the Whole Family!

Next Stop: Core Central by Kalinda Colley

There is something here on offer that is a little bit different, a little bit safer, if not more effective, and is so functional to everyday life… to keep you safe, happy and healthy.’ Pilates is the focus of Core Central, a new fitness centre owned and operated by Sammy Knaggs. Core Central operates, for both men and women of all ages, from a studio at Horizons Golf Resort. The classes range from traditional mat work pilates, to reformer classes, to dance classes with a pilates basis, among others. Teaching over 30 classes a week, as well as providing personal training sessions, Sammy really believes in the long term health benefits of pilates, both as a form of exercise and rehabilitation. After dancing around the world, including time with the Moulin Rouge in Paris, Sammy returned home with a number of injuries. The inspiration behind Core Central came from her own personal experience with the benefits of pilates. ‘This debilitating, sharp throbbing pain was waking me up in the middle of the night and through the use of pilates, it just completely went away. I thought… if I could fix myself, maybe I could fix other people too.’ Sammy says that, while providing a very intense and effective workout, pilates is incredible for rehabilitation, particularly in people with back and sporting injuries. ‘It’s beneficial for anyone suffering from arthritis… to joint injuries, to spinal injuries, or just wanting to get into shape… A lot of people I get coming in are people from gyms who are doing a lot of weightlifting and they’ve hurt their backs because they don’t have the core strength to support how strong their arms and legs are. A lot of golfers come in for the rotational twist in their swing.’ Not only aiding in treating injuries, pilates helps in preventing injuries, and ensures healthy and effective exercise. While she believes there is a stigma that pilates is only for middle-aged women, Sammy says she assists a wide range of clients, both men and women, of a variety of ages. ‘I operate a ballet class where I think my youngest participant is 16 and my eldest is 67.’ Having a dancing background Sammy incorporates dance into a lot of her classes, with one being based on MTV dance.

Sammy Knaggs, Core Central and Winter in Germany and every Summer and Spring in Paris. Sammy says the Moulin Rouge was an amazing experience. ‘It’s an incredible place, which you are so lucky to work for… considering thousands of girls audition each year from all over the world… sometimes it’s just being in the right place at the right time.’ Although dancers are often stereotyped, she says everyone was incredibly supportive and became like her second family. There was definitely no shortage of pranks between the dancers, she says. ‘Sometimes the girls could be really cheeky and they’d write your number on a piece of paper and drop it into one of the guys laps in the audience…You’d get these really annoying random phone calls. There were also lots of lolly games on stage, passing around lollies and that sort of thing.’ Getting homesick after falling back in love with Port Stephens during a holiday, Sammy decided to move home. After working as a personal trainer throughout the Bay, Sammy launched Core Central and just aims to help people and promote the amazing benefits pilates has to offer.

Beginning ballet at the age of 6, Sammy took on every form she could until securing dancing gigs in large professional shows all around the world. Lucky enough to be offered positions in both a boutique show in Germany and the Moulin Rouge in Paris, Sammy spent 3.5 years spending Autumn Issue 17: Whats On In Our Backyard

DadPreneurs

Building a

Better Future

Most of us have heard the term mumpreneurs. Ambitious & resourceful ladies who combine running a business with bringing up the children. But what about dads? There are of course many men who actively balance the role of dad and the role of entrepreneur. So I figured it was high time to discover and celebrate our local dadpreneurs, those who have made significant life changes and succeeded in finding the right work/life balance that we all strive to achieve. I was also interested to discover the answer to the age old question: can men actually multitask? I found some of my answers with Nelson Bay local Brooke Holdsworth. Brooke met his current partner two years ago when they brought their families together ‘Brady Bunch’ style, with five children ranging between the ages of 5 and 15 years. It’s clear throughout our interview that this affable family man puts much of his success down to having a supportive partner behind him, who together with their children, make a great “team”. Originally from Scone, Brooke’s early years saw him, like most little boys, constructing things out of anything he could lay his hands on from lego and blocks to beds and lounges. Inspired by his parents’ flair for renovating old houses in Sydney, Brooke’s early construction interests led him to a 5 year university degree in Architecture at Newcastle University. “I would work at my parents restaurant on the weekends and travel down to do uni during the week” explains Brooke. “After finishing my degree, I worked in practices in Newcastle which led to a job offer as Office Manager based in Abu Dhabi in the Middle East, where I worked on large residential and hospital projects.” Impressive stuff. However, the financial crisis soon hit and Brooke found himself amongst many other professionals

by Saffron Cooper

who were made redundant at that time. A whopping 130 job applications later, Brooke stumbled onto his entrepreneurial path in 2012. “I walked into the Centrelink office one day feeling pretty drab and came across a flyer for the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme.” A scheme which would in fact change everything for Brooke. “The scheme involved completing a Certificate IV in Small Business, creating a business plan, then being interviewed by a panel in order to be considered for funding. I was successful in my application and awarded a business grant.” He went on to start his business, Holdsworth Design, and has since worked on a number of projects from conception to completion. Currently the only architect in the Bay area, local projects include a residential house on The Vantage Estate in Corlette and recent completion of the new medical centre at Tanilba Bay. However, running his own business has by no means been plain sailing. “It’s been hard being the ‘new guy’ in town. Plus, there’s always that underlying financial stress worrying about where the next job is going to come from. You eventually learn to control the anxieties and adapt to the changing way you work and inconsistent nature of it, but that’s been one of the hardest transitions.” However, it is clear from our conversation that becoming a so called ‘dadpreneur’ has been a life changing experience and one which he has embraced whole heartedly. “I can pick up my children from school, have more time to spend with them in the holidays. I can pick and choose when I work and when I don’t work. I could be up at 5am before the kids get up. Other times I can work amidst it all with the noise and interruptions.” Now… much as I hate to admit it, there seems to be evidence here that guys can multitask as well as us mums! Building a great future for his own family is a priority for Brooke, however this dadpreneur doesn’t just want to improve his own lifestyle, he talks passionately about his dream to work more on architectural projects with local families, whom have perhaps outgrown their homes and have the option to rebuild or extend. “I’d also love to use my 15 years of experience to work on projects where I am giving back to the community. I have fallen in love with this area. It’s full of natural beauty and I’d love to add to that beauty by developing the townships.” And his advice to other dads thinking of taking the brave step into the world of entrepreneurship? “Take the chance provided it’s not too much of a risk to your family financially. It’s going to be a struggle at first, but it really frees your whole life up. It’s not so regulated and controlled and to be able to spend quality time with your children is magic.”

DadPreneurs-BehindtheBusiness Name: David Thorne of Fingal Bay

Name: Stuart Farrelly of Boat Harbour Business: Kollekt.it IKEA Delivery Service

Business: Signs At The Bay

Launched: September 2012

Launched: 2008

T: 0407 173 867 / www.kollektit.com.au The inspiration: After moving back to Port Stephens from Sydney, we missed IKEA and their clever, budget friendly furniture & found ourselves travelling to Sydney to shop there. Many friends had the same problem. The products were perfect, but you can't shop online and get them delivered. Then a little light bulb went on in my head what if I offered a service that did that for people... and there you have it Kollekt.it was born. What makes your service unique?: We actually do the shopping for you and deliver it. IKEA offer delivery, but you still need to go in store to shop (& it's heaps more expensive). It's an easy, cost effective way to get IKEA furniture delivered (& it means you can spend the weekends at the beach, not navigating Sydney traffic). How does it work for customers?: Customers create their shopping list online at IKEA's website, they email it to us & we do the rest. We charge a delivery fee of 20% of the shopping list amount, with a minimum delivery fee of $99. What’s the secret of your success?: Offering a unique product, with great customer service. Advice for other prospective dadpreneurs: Have a good woman beside you! And the good woman would say, "understand your customers, offer great service, be consistent in your marketing & persevere!"

Name: Steve Townend of Nelson Bay

T: 4981 1180 www.signsatthebay.com.au The inspiration: I have been a signwriter for going on 30 years, running my own sign business in Sydney since I finished my apprenticeship. In 2007, my wife Sarah-Jane and I decided to move our family to the Bay and start a new business from scratch. So I guess Signs at the Bay was born from necessity, to provide for my family, but also it gave me a new opportunity to get back to working one on one with local clients, designing and creating my own work again without the distraction of staff and managing a factory day to day... Back to basics. What makes your service unique?: I enjoy the creative challenges of modern-day signs, listening to my clients, finding out what they want to achieve with their signage and creating something unique, which hopefully looks good and works hard for their business. What’s the secret of your success?: Success in any small business I think is driven by two things. 1) the motivation that comes from the basic necessity to provide for your family and 2) a genuine love for what you do or what you can create. After all these years, I still love the craft of sign making, I do honestly enjoy working with my customers and helping them grow their business.

Advice for other prospective dadpreneurs: Be prepared for long, lonely hours. The work/ life balance is difficult to achieve especially in the first years, as you try to establish good customer relationships and grow your business but the results are definitely worth it.

behind the business

Business: Port Stephens Computer Repairs Launched: October 2013 T: 0421 204 119 www.computersportstephens.com.au The inspiration: After many years in the industry, seeing the tears and frustrations caused by PC's that just wont do what they are supposed to, I believed there was a way to offer my expertise to clients at a reasonable price and fulfil a long-held dream of managing my own business. What makes your service unique?: I offer a mobile on-site computer service with no call out fee, with convenience for the client in mind. I will identify the cause of your problem and set about finding solutions quickly and efficiently. I do not bamboozle clients with technical jargon that only I understand. I talk in plain English not "Geekspeak"! What’s the secret of your success?: Great customer service and satisfaction, building relationships, understanding client needs, convenience and affordable prices. All this adds up to a fantastic customer experience where clients will want to refer my business to other people. Advice for other prospective dadpreneurs: I am a keen fisherman and always say "You've got to match the hatch for the catch." Work out exactly who your client base is and identify their particular needs. Tailor your business to meet those needs. Also, good communication skills are paramount to success.

How does it work for customers?: Call us and we'll arrange a time to come and service or repair your mowers, brush cutters and garden equipment. How successful have you been since start-up?: We are extremely busy and may possibly put on more staff if it continues to grow at such a rapid rate. What’s the secret of your success?: A niche market and honest, reliable service. Emma Stone

Long locks: Long hair looks have been predominantly all out adopting a natural, sultry look with a 70’s, lived in feel. Deep side parts remain popular with my personal favourte being Reese Witherspoon's take on this style. It's a great way of giving long hair (that could potentially drag the profile down), a diagonal line that draws the eye up and outward. Katie Holmes has opted for a softer version with more volume which is probably a better idea for those of us who like to ‘flick’ the front of our hair! Regardless of whether you choose a smooth or wavy texture with the use of a conical wand, pleeeeeease don’t forget heat protection and a finishing product that adds bucket loads of shine. We recommend KMS Defrizz oil for sleeker looks and the KMS Freeshape 2 in 1 spray for whooshy waves. Tip: Social butterflies with long tresses may benefit from a weekly mask. I would highly recommend Goldwell’s Dualsenses Rich Repair 60 second mask. Mid-length: For mid length glamour and my favourite total look overall, I direct you straight to Emma Stone at

With recent inspiration from the Melbourne cup and Spring carnival season, what better way to kick off this issue's styling reviews by presenting some of our favourite styles of the last few months.

Jennifer Lawrence

Short but Chic: Short hair is hard to master, but is a great hot weather hair choice. Shailene Woodley provides us with two beautiful options that are both individual and fresh.

A Quick Note On Styles And Colours: To add some interest to your ballyage try putting a rich glaze over the ends (Megan Fox) or splash fine foils around the hairline for a natural sun kissed look (Jennifer Lawrence). Make sure you ask your stylist what your colour options are. There are many more tools available to us than bleaches to lighten hair! Try and think condition first. For a style change think of adding a long fringe that you can side sweep, or take the back of your style slightly shorter than the front and soften with some free hand layering that will give body and create movement... remember diagonal lines draw the eye up and out!

Nikki introduced me to the idea of balance – something between “effort and surrender". I liked that analogy, it resonated with me. The yoga class is peaceful, neutral and encouraging. What did you know about yoga before you began? Ian: Not much, but I thought what the heck and started with my wife. Yogi Bev: I was aware of yoga from friends. I also trekked the Annapurna circuit in Nepal a few years ago, and saw some trekkers in the mountains moving and stretching. I thought, yep I should get into that and bend it like Beckham - I have never come across any unfit looking yogis! What is the most challenging thing about the class? Ian: Not snoring if you fall asleep at the end of the session lying flat out for “total relaxation”. Yogi Bev: Post professional basketball, any position that puts pressure on my knees. It also keeps me flexible, fit and, importantly - for me keeps me surfing. It is also a great “de-stressor”. Yogi Bev: Yes. I drive for work so it is especially good for my lower back and compliments my new passion; swimming laps in my salt-water pool! The Yogasphere website has interesting pieces on motivation and diet as well as links to upcoming events for like-minded yogis. Do you ever recommend yoga to friends and other blokes you know? How to make sure your Merry Christmas does become a Happy New Year... by Melissa Cox, Wavelengths Allied Health

If the thought of Christmas brings shudders of dread rather than feelings of pure joy, you’re not alone. These feelings are compounded if you have pre-existing relationship issues, with experts reporting that the stress of family gatherings, unwise candour encouraged by excessive alcohol intake and even work parties often prove the final straw for many couples. Consequently, January sees roughly twice as many couples separating or commencing divorce proceedings than any other month of the year. Don't let negotiating the holiday season inadvertently put your relationship on the backburner. 1. Communicate your (realistic!) expectations: Take time to sit down with your partner and discuss what you would each like to get out of the holiday season. We all come from different families with different values and traditions. What did you each treasure about Christmas time? What traditions and memories would you like to create for your children? It’s often the simplest things like decorating the tree to special music or leaving out carrots for the reindeer. Perhaps have a discussion with both sides of the family about expectations and budgets so that Christmas doesn't become a family burden, and be realistic about how much time it is reasonable to stay in each other’s houses before things start to grate. A rule of thumb would be to only stay for about as long as it takes for the prawns to go off!

your sole source of happiness. Plus, by taking care of what you need to do in your own life, you bring a more positive attitude back into the relationship." Claudia says. "The other person will start to treat you differently, without you having done anything other than shift your energy into your own life." Of course, if any of your relationships are not as they should be, the holidays might offer the perfect break in routine to invest some energy into improving them, and the support of a counsellor can help.

2. Quality time with the Children: If you reflect on your best family holidays you had as a child, it’s unlikely that your most cherished memories will be about a mountain of presents but more about the feelings of closeness, the laughter and joy of water fights, cricket and ball games in the backyard, listening to family stories over and over. The greatest gift you can give your children in the holidays is your time, and simple fun like playing board games, movie nights and lazy days on the beach. 3. Conflict Management: Most importantly discuss with your partner ahead of time about how you will work together to deal with any hiccups that might occur when families come together, especially in blended family situations where the children need to spend time with different parents and relatives. Amongst all the chaos of holiday time, it can be especially important to be mindful of nurturing your relationship with your partner; “checkin” with them regularly, express affection and share “in-jokes”, take your partner’s side, express a “we against others attitude”, and validate their feelings. Take time to appreciate your partner: "I really enjoyed dinner, thank you"; "thank goodness you were able to deal with that!" and, "thanks for making the bed!". If you’ve got their back, they’re more likely to get yours. 4. When a “Bump in the Road” is taking its toll: Relationship therapist Claudia Pereira says "If you're going through a rough patch, it can be helpful to divert your attention away from what the other person is doing badly, or isn't doing, and focus on taking positive action in your own life instead. By making your life more satisfying, you take pressure off your relationship to be Issue 17: Whats On In Our Backyard

Parenting

Bedtime Story

BY LAURA FRANCKE, Port Stephens Clinical Psychology Services

In the guilt ridden stomping grounds of mothers' groups and playgroups there appears to be few topics as contentious and divisive as that of co-sleeping. Those who support co-sleeping and what is referred to as ‘attachment parenting’ can be vehement in their zeal that a child needs immediate access to their parent to form strong safe attachments. Meanwhile, in the routine camp proponents can be equally zealous in presenting the benefits of a child learning to self soothe using a combination of routine and ‘controlled crying’. Stuck in the middle are many mothers who are so desperate for sleep that if it means their child sleeps with them then so be it and if it becomes unbearable sleeping with a toddler's foot in their face, they are then on a mission to return them to their own bed. As a clinician and mother of four, the recommendation I give to parents is by all means read the research but recognise that every child is unique and each family situation will create factors that may influence your decisions. My focus is always on doing what works for your family.

The research on attachment suggests that children’s long term development of a sense of security originates in their being assured that their caregiver is available and capable of meeting their needs. Therefore, timely responses to a child’s communication of distress or need is fundamental to their long term wellbeing. However, this does not mean that children must constantly be in contact with their caregiver, simply that it is not recommended to leave a child to ‘self soothe’ for extended periods of time as this can lead them to develop anxiety about their caregivers availability. Becoming so attuned to a child that the mother is unable to get adequate rest does not make for an attentive patient parent and co-sleeping can sometimes become an issue that creates strain and stress in the family unit. Encouraging a child to learn to self soothe is also an important developmental skill and gradually teaching your child to soothe themselves can be an enormous relief to a sleep deprived mum. If you are having difficulty keeping a toddler in their bed when you have used co-sleeping to soothe them in the past, the following strategies might help you; • Begin the night time ritual early, read stories and have cuddles in bed and create a predictable ritual to help your child know his/her sleep time. • Make sure your child starts the night in their own bed, lying down to sleep with them if necessary and gradually moving to a chair that moves slowly out the door can help them gently adjust to not having your body there.

Our Community...

• Make a rewards chart or use an app such as ‘Jo Frost Rewards’ to help motivate your child to stay in their bed.

• If your child comes in through the night remind them that they are in their bed and take them calmly back. Repeat lying down with them if necessary. The most important thing to remember is that this season will one day come to an end and your little one will one day no longer want to be close to you every minute. While it’s important to take steps for your family’s sanity and sleep, don’t allow their longing for you to become a source of anger and punishment. These early years are so precious, and keep in mind that those few early years where you are their everything pass much too quickly... cherish them.

Explore Port Stephens’ Coast Discover a portal into Port Stephens' ancient volcanic history, meet the creatures who make their homes in rockpools and seagrass beds or take a look behind the scenes of Tomaree’s gun emplacement. In January 2015, Port Stephens Council has teamed up with the National Parks and Wildlife Service to offer and exciting and diverse range of activities designed to connect people with their environment. The ever-popular Summer Coastal Activities Program will run again in January, offering a fun and informative range of events to delight children through to adults, while learning more about our coast and marine environments and local history. There is sure to be something of interest for every member of the family. Take a tour to Morna Point and learn how violent volcanic eruptions created the rocky Port Stephens coast, and see how a relentless sea has carved and smoothed the shoreline over thousands of years. Learn to spot the hidden inhabitants of the seagrass such as baby squid, fish, prawns and crabs who bury themselves from the view of frolicking beachgoers, or comb the beach for discarded shells and learn the stories of the remains of sea creatures stranded by the falling tide or washed up on the shore. Enjoy Wilderquest activities in the bush and beach with national park Discovery rangers. Rekindle your youthful curiosity in nature, and delight as your children hone their bush detective skills. Sunset is a perfect time to walk with a ranger to Tomaree’s summit, discovering some of the plants and animals of the bush, as well as Tomaree’s unique past. On descent, we may spot a nocturnal animal or two emerge.

Experience life in Port Stephens as an indigenous Worimi tribesperson by taking a walk with a traditional owner and hear the stories of the Worimi, learn how to identify canoe trees and shield trees and the significance of the plants and animals in this "coastal sea country" to Aboriginal people. Get involved in something fishy with a tour of the only land-based Barramundi farm, or go behind the scenes at the Fisheries Institute. Children between the ages of 8 and 14 years should not miss out of the popular Kids Fishing Clinic where they will drop a line and learn about responsible fishing practices. The Summer Coastal Activities program is offered by Port Stephens Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, with support from the Marine Parks Authority, DPI and local community group Ocean and Coastal Care Initiatives. Bookings are essential for all activities. Meeting locations will be provided upon booking. Some national park activities have a small fee. Activities are suitable for ages 5 to adult, unless otherwise stated. Children under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult. Get Into Some DI Y These Holidays

by Kalinda Colley

Are you up for a challenge? Refurbishing recycled furniture is a great family project that proves to be very satisfying. Whether you’re a first timer or have experience, there’s a project out there for you! From a simple paint job on an old stool to reinventing a bed side table; refurbishing recycled furniture can turn something old and unwanted, into a brand new, unique, statement piece perfectly suited to your home.

rder Made to o the pieces from Men's Shed

A simple paint job is perfect for beginners and will make all the difference to an outdated piece. For example; mismatched, old and unused chairs can become personalised seats for your children at the dinner table. Simply paint the chairs in bold colours and using a stencil, write your children’s names on the back. It’s a relatively straight forward project, but can really add aesthetic appeal to a room. Plus, the kids will love them! Cheyne, from Port Trade Paint, says it’s really important, however, that any wooden furniture is completely sanded and prepped before being painted. But this can be easily done. If you don’t have any furniture at home, or you are looking for something in particular, go and check out the Salamander Bay Recycling Centre, located on Soldiers Point Road. You are bound to be inspired by what you see just walking through. They have a range of furniture, material offcuts, decorative pieces and, not to mention, an array of recycled ornaments. It is also home to the Salamander Bay Men’s Shed. The Men’s Shed create made to order pieces, if you have something particular in mind, and would be able to provide tips and help on completing your project. The beauty of getting your pieces from the Centre is that it is completely not-for-profit and is run by the community, for the community. It is also supported by small local charities. Locals keep it in production and the profits go straight back into community projects, the economy, and are donated to individuals, groups and organisations throughout the area. The staff are incredibly helpful, and the prices are minimal. It really is the first stop for any DIY project. Next stop is the paint store. Port Trade Paint, located on George’s Road, can provide you with all sorts of paints and coatings

Education

Is my child ready for school? By Sue Saxby, BodySense Kinesiology

At this time of the year many of you are struggling with the decision of whether to send your child to school or keep them at home or preschool for another year. What is best for all concerned? Should you start your child at around 4½ years or wait until they are going on towards 6 years of age? If you keep them at home will they be bored and difficult? If you start them will they be disadvantaged and have learning difficulties? As an educator I have seen many children start school. Some were ready, others were not. Those who are ready, settle into the daily rhythm and routines of school life with little effort or emotional turmoil. Those who are not ready find the structure, rules, sharing of time and resources, levels of activity/noise/ movement around them, overwhelming. This overwhelm may be seen in obvious outward expressions such as defiance, distress and acting out or more inward reactions of reluctance, withdrawal and anxiety. Currently, for children in NSW age guidelines state that your child may start Kindergarten in Term 1 if he/she is turning 5 by July 31st that year. However school readiness is NOT about your child’s age or how well they can read, write, count or do more than other children at the same age. These skills will be learnt in school. Readiness is about your child’s physical, social and emotional stages of development. Child Development, What To Consider: Is my child: • Able to spend time away from parents or carers without anxiety? • Able to speak and listen confidently to adults other than their parents? • Able to recognise their own emotions and needs and others emotions and needs? • Able to maintain eye contact and recognise non-verbal communication cues, facial expressions? • Able to sit still in one place and focus on a task, follow a short set of instructions to completion? • Able to move onto a change of plan/activity with ease and enthusiasm? • Able to participate in group activities such as games and play, share with others, take turns?

Whatever your decision, one thing we know is that your child will be at school for a very long time. We want those years to be engaging and inspiring. We want your child to go into the first year of their school education ready to expand, grow, feel success and meet all the challenges with age appropriate emotional and social maturity. Education top-performing education systems around the world, however “the review confirms what all education ministers are hearing from parents and teachers, that there’s simply too much to try to learn and students and teachers are swamped,” he said. Whilst the new national curriculum is still in the ‘testing’ phase and the Federal Government seek to overhaul what is taught through our schools, what does this mean for our children?

By Jessica Stefanish, Steponafish Academic Coaching

The Australian Curriculum sets out standards and learning outcomes for students, detailing what they should achieve and learn as they progress through school. For some time, the ‘overcrowded’ Australian curriculum has created challenges for teachers and students in implementing and covering all the content required for each subject. Whilst on internship during term 3, I experienced first-hand just how overcrowded the curriculum really is, especially when taking into consideration the number of extra-curricular activities, excursions and workshops, etc., which take place during the term. It’s only natural for teachers to want to teach and parents to want their children to learn all about the world around them, but the fact of the matter is, there is just not enough time within the school week to ensure all areas of the curriculum are covered. The national curriculum is being developed and implemented through consultation with all states and territories, re-prioritising what needs to be taught to our children and when. Over the next two years, the NSW K-6 syllabuses will be phased out and the new NSW K-10 syllabuses will be phased in. The NSW K-10 English syllabus is now compulsory in schools with other subjects like mathematics and science being optional. There is still much trial and error as these changes occur. In October 2014, the Abbott government’s education review of the national curriculum did indeed find it to be overcrowded, especially in the primary years. Education Minister Christopher Pyne said a strong national curriculum was a foundation of the

One of the benefits in creating a national curriculum is that there is now consistent national standards for all students across all states and the focus is on learning via a world class curricula. Additionally, whilst the national curriculum is a document that educators use to guide their teaching, it does not restrict it. Changes occur from the ground up (remember that a seed grows from the soil towards the sky then it flowers) and the personal pedagogies of class teachers will ensure that your child gets the education they deserve. What do I do if I have concerns about my child’s progress? The first step would be to communicate with the relevant teacher or head of department at your school. Your school will welcome hearing your concerns and try to work with you to maintain your child’s education to a level which fulfils their requirements. There are also many cost effective ways at home, to help your child explore the topics they may need a little assistance with. These include the many curriculum friendly apps which are available, as well as other online resources. Another option to consider is private, after school tutoring. This option can give your child the one on one attention that is just not possible in the classroom environment, boost their performance and improve confidence and provide the motivation they may need to excel in their subjects.
