Recognition for gold standard best practices

OAKLAND Care has been presented with a ‘Gold’ award at the Green World Environment Awards for its standout sustainability efforts.

The prestigious awards were launched in 1994 by international environmental group, Green Organisation, to reward and promote environmental best practices around the globe.

They are also supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management, and other independent bodies.

For 2024 the carbon neutral care group won ‘Gold’ in the Green World Environmental Award’s health category in recognition of its commitment to sustainability and environmental practices within social care. The accolade is a level up from 2023 when they were awarded ‘Silver’. Oakland Care’s trophy and certificate was presented at the prestigious awards ceremony in Groupo Ambipar, Nova Odessa, Brazil.

Chief executive officer Joanne Balmer BEM said: “I am delighted we have been recognised for this prestigious global sustainability title. The award win, which builds on our success from last year, is testament to the hard work of everybody across Oakland Care who are committed to ensuring a greener and healthier future for our communities and the planet.

“As an industry leader in this space, this international recognition helps us in our efforts

to inspire others within our sector to push ahead with their own sustainability journey and help contribute to the collective fight against climate change.

“We can make a real positive difference, and I am looking forward to us continuing to go above and beyond to showcase what is possible for social care.”

Over the last 12 months Oakland Care has continued to drive a range of inclusive and effective green initiatives within its homes, with much of these efforts bringing team members, residents and their loved ones together.

This has included its Green Month in September which saw a fourweek marathon of activity such as litter picking, beach cleans and tree planting.

Meanwhile, across its care homes the provider has driven positive environmental changes.

This included transforming a plot of land at Oakland Care’s Maplewood Court care home into a biodiverse, wildlife-friendly space with the help of Kent Wildlife Trust and Low Carbon Kent.

It has also seen Oakland Care certify all its existing care homes using BREEAM, the internationally recognised certification which assesses the building’s specification, design, construction and use for its impact on the environment across 51 criteria.

Oakland Care has delivered changes which has seen five of its care homes receive an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM certification.

Care group celebrates its first anniversary

A CARE group is marking a successful first 12 months in business.

Aria Healthcare Group has achieved several benchmarks in staff retention and development, financial performance and hospitality, priding itself on being colleague-led, with feedback from its 2,700 colleagues providing the basis for its everevolving ethos, vision and values.

Over the past year the operator has reduced its labour staff turnover rate by half and has increased wages, benefits and annual leave, showing its commitment to being a National Living Wage employer.

The company is also committed to nurturing and developing its staff, launching its ‘Hearts of Gold’ and ‘Living Our Values Everyday’ colleague recognition programmes, as well as its ‘Inspiring Leaders’ development programme earlier this year.

Caroline Roberts, CEO of Aria Care Group, said: “It’s hard to believe that Aria launched just over a year ago.

“The past 12 months have seen a remarkable transformation for us and there is still so much more we want to achieve.

“We are incredibly proud of the positive impact we’ve already made on the lives of the people we care for and our colleagues.

“We are committed to building on this momentum and making Aria the

leading choice for exceptional care and hospitality in the years to come.”

Providing “hospitality from the heart” has also been a key priority Hospitality director James Clear’s extensive knowledge and passion for providing the best care has resulted in not only a robust nutrition and hydration framework, but also a number of initiatives including Aria’s Chef Academy apprenticeship programme, as well as its Chef of the Year competition.

Over the past year Aria has invested £18m in a revival project for its homes, with major refurbishments

carried out in 12 care homes in 2023 and plans for more in 2024.

A primary focus of the re-investment has been to create both indoor and outdoor spaces that are aesthetically pleasing and functional for both residents and colleagues.

Caroline added: “Ultimately our priority has and will always be the wellbeing of our residents and colleagues.

“We want everyone in our communities to feel safe, listened to, valued and, ultimately, happy that they are living the best version of their lives.”

Bogumil awarded honorary British Empire Medal for services to social care

BOGUMIL Cwiklak, who joined The Orders of St John Care Trust hen he was recruited from Poland through an overseas recruitment drive in 2007, has been awarded an honorary British Empire Medal for services to adult social care during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bogumil joined the operator as a carer at Grevill House in Charlton Kings, near Cheltenham, and is now assistant regional director – special projects.

During his long-standing career with OSJCT he has gained extensive experience in delivering and managing positive change in adult social care and is currently supporting operations at The Fremantle Trust, which recently merged with OSJCT. He said: “When I first thought about moving to the UK, I thought it would be for a couple of years. However, I soon found that working at OSJCT offered me the opportunity to follow my ambitions.

“The Trust has strong values and Ewa (my wife) and I have always felt supported. We’ve stayed at OSJCT, and in the UK, thanks to the strong community feel, very friendly teams

and working in roles where we can improve people’s lives.

“I was very surprised to be nominated for this unexpected honour. To receive this recognition in Britain, as someone who moved from another country, for helping our society, is really fantastic.

“I arrived in the UK 17 years ago with just one small suitcase, but with passion and energy to make a contribution and share my skills. This honour is very special to me. The UK is a place where your dreams can come true.”

Chief executive officer Dan Hayes added: “We are thrilled that Bogumil has been awarded the honorary British Empire Medal.

“His passion and dedication to adult social care are clear to all who work with him. From the pandemic to ongoing organisational change, Bogumil brings compassion, expertise, and total commitment.

“Throughout the pandemic Bogumil put his job, and the wellbeing of our residents and employees across Gloucestershire first. His tenacity and drive were immense and with strong resilience he skilfully led his colleagues through a constantly changing and difficult period.

Bogumil has been a force for good since he joined the Trust, and I am proud to call him my colleague.”

Bogumil’s drive to promote compassionate, high-quality healthcare, and desire to effect positive change has been inspired by his own experience of care as a child, when he spent time in hospital after operations due to scoliosis – a genetic spinal condition.

He said: “I remember two male nurses on the paediatric wards, they

were very caring and engaged. They made the experience I had better.

“From that early age I learned that nursing is holistic, as well as clinical. Care is about being with people, and bringing ease and humour to what can be a difficult time.”

Bogumil moved to the UK in January 2007, following his wedding to Ewa, who also joined OSJCT in May 2007 to work at Grevill House.

Bogumil, Ewa and their three children are now happily settled in Gloucestershire.

Last year Bogumil played a pivotal role in the overseas recruitment project which the Trust runs to offer opportunities for skilled nurses and carers to join OSJCT. With his knowledge of the challenges of moving to a new country, coping with a secondary language, and not knowing the local geography, Bogumil has helped to ensure that new recruits are supported from the moment they arrive.

Overseas carers are met at the airport, given sim cards, welcome packs and supported with finding accommodation and learning about local transportation.

Home opens dementia friendly café

STAFF at RMBI Care Co. Home Zetland Court in Bournemouth have recently set up ZetCafe24, a dementia friendly café.

The aim is to provide social gatherings for people living with dementia, families and professionals in the local area, where they all can share information and experiences as well as speak openly about the condition.

Guests can discuss their own dementia diagnosis or someone else’s, obtain advice from the Home’s

dementia advisor and the frailty team, and meet new friends in a calm and safe environment.

The café runs on the last Thursday of every month from 2pm to 4 pm.

“I have opened many dementia friendly cafés in Hampshire, both in care homes and in community spaces, such as GP surgeries, shops and community buildings,” said Sue Wiffen, Zetland Court’s deputy home manager and dementia advisor for ZetCafe24.

“Navigating a dementia diagnosis

can sometimes feel daunting, so we want to provide friendship and support for those looking for advice, whilst enjoying a cuppa in a tranquil community environment.”

The care home also offers music therapy, reminiscence sessions using assistive technology to enhance memories, film afternoons and pet therapy.

Visitors are also able to enjoy the gardens of the Home, just a short walk away from the beach, as well as tea, coffee and cakes.

Enhancing dementia care through team training

IN THE landscape of elderly care, identifying the signs and symptoms of dementia is of utmost importance. Memory loss, confusion, communication challenges, and emotional vulnerability are among the most common indicators.

At Westgate Healthcare, our team members and dementia specialists are trained to identify and assess these symptoms, tailoring care plans to meet the specific needs of each resident.

It’s crucial to understand that different forms of dementia may present with varying early indicators. For instance, Lewy body dementia may initially manifest with hallucinations rather than memory loss, while Alzheimer’s disease often presents with memory-related symptoms early on.

Frontotemporal dementia, on the other hand, may involve changes in personality as an early sign. Despite these differences, overlapping symptoms become more apparent in later stages, emphasising the need for comprehensive care and monitoring.

There are currently around 900,000 people diagnosed with dementia in the UK, and this number is set to rise to a staggering 1.6 million by 2040. These statistics underscore the urgent need for specialised care and support for individuals affected by dementia. Additionally, one in six people over the age of 80 have dementia, highlighting the prevalence of this condition among the elderly population. Dementia, a progressive

cognitive condition, presents unique challenges for both individuals with the condition and their caregivers. It requires not only patience and empathy but also specialised knowledge and skills.

Westgate Healthcare’s dementia training combines classroom learning with practical demonstrations using modified equipment and simulated scenarios, allowing our teams to better comprehend the difficulties faced by those living with dementia.

This hands-on approach enables our caregivers to develop a deeper understanding of the condition, laying the groundwork for personcentred care that preserves the dignity and uniqueness of each resident.

Furthermore, dementia training empowers our teams to employ effective communication strategies, transcending language barriers and cognitive limitations.

Techniques such as validation and reminiscence therapy enable caregivers to connect with residents on a meaningful level, fostering a sense of belonging and reducing confusion or agitation. Additionally, training equips our

team with practical skills to create dementia-friendly environments within our care homes.

From optimising physical spaces to implementing structured routines and engaging activities, every aspect of Westgate Healthcare homes is designed to promote independence and enhance quality of life for residents living with dementia.

Continuous team member training ensures that our caregivers remain abreast of the latest developments in dementia care research and best practices.

As the field evolves, so too does our approach, with ongoing education enabling us to refine and improve the quality of care we provide.

At Westgate Healthcare, our commitment to training goes beyond compliance; it reflects our dedication to excellence in elderly care.

By investing in the professional development of our team, we enhance the lives of residents living with dementia and enrich the overall care experience for everyone in our homes.

n Maria Fagen is the group training manager at Westgate Healthcare.
