Research PUBLICATIONS Published three scientific papers documenting: a new breeding behavior involving males blowing bubbles toward a receptive female (see photo below; Jones, Nicklin, & Darling, 2022) a potential new breeding area in the Pacific (Pitman & Darling, 2022) the most recent results from our final wave glider expedition aimed at recording whale songs in the deep ocean between Hawaii and Mexico (Darling & Goodwin, 2023). TRACKING SONGS ACROSS THE PACIFIC RIM Received three-years of seed funding from The John Lazarich Foundation to further explore the structure and function of humpback whale song across the Pacific Rim. This collaborative study led by Whale Trust involves 12 researchers from eight countries.

BREEDING BEHAVIOR Launched the third phase of our hormone project, in collaboration with University of California, Santa Cruz and NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science laboratory, to better understand the role that female reproductive hormones play in male-female interactions during the breeding season. SATELLITE TAGS USED TO DOCUMENT MOVEMENTS IN BREEDING GROUNDS In 2023, we piloted a new study using satellite tags to track movements of humpback whales off Maui. RESEARCH PHOTOGRAPHY Documented additional evidence of the breeding behavior outlined in the Jones, Nicklin, & Darling 2022 publication (see photo below).
