It says much about the rare eclecticism of the programming at Fifth Avenue Cinemas (2110 Burrard, FestivalCinemas.ca) that it was chosen by WE readers as both Vancouver’s best first-run movie theatre and its best repertory or art-house theatre. This, in a nutshell, is what’s long been so appealing about the place. It does not have stadium seating, or a selection of fast-food outlets, or an arcade and a ball pit for impatient kids — and that’s the point. This is a place for serious movie lovers who are open to all manner of foreign and independent releases, but who also aren’t averse to the occasional Hollywood blockbuster (Inception, for example, had a healthy run there last year). Audiences at Fifth Avenue tend to reflect the venue’s reverence for film, too, browsing the review clippings posted in the lobby before turning off their cellphones (thank you!) and making their way inside.
