ur fundamental mission at WETA is to create and present high-quality programs in service to the community of Washington and the nation, so it was very exciting to learn that two WETA television projects recently earned one of the broadcast industry’s top honors: the distinguished George Foster Peabody Award. In April, it was announced that in recognition of their excellence in quality, Latino Americans and The Central Park Five are each 2013 Peabody Award winners. Produced by WETA, Bosch & Co., and Latino Public Broadcasting, in association with ITVS, the documentary series Latino Americans presented six fascinating installments tracing a people’s history that is older than the nation itself — and showed how Latinos are reshaping the United States. The Central Park Five, created by WETA partners Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon, and a co-production of WETA and Florentine Films, reexamined the case of five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were railroaded and wrongly imprisoned in a high-profile criminal case. WETA is enormously proud to have brought these two important projects to the American public and hope you are as well, for your support helps make possible our productions and broadcasts. Thank you for your membership in WETA.
