ASK the expert

Q : Can I leave my robotic cleaner in the pool?

A : Theoretically, yes, but you really shouldn’t. You’ll probably find the manufacturer’s guidelines recommend removing the cleaner when not in use, for a few good reasons. 1) While these units are developed to be submerged, longterm continuous exposure to water and chemicals can speed up wear and tear. Plastic parts are susceptible to degradation from pH changes in the water, while seals can break down, allowing water to enter and make contact with sensitive electronic components. It’s also a good idea to limit unnecessary contact between water and the power supply. 2) Proper maintenance includes removing the cleaner and emptying the filter. This ensures optimum efficiency, less energy use and reduces the risk of damage. 3) There is a good argument for removing the cleaner while people are using the pool, limiting the likelihood of tangling or other avoidable accidents.

Most manufacturers will advocate for removal from the pool and a good rinse when not in use. That gives you a chance to give it a quick inspection, clean the filters and store it in a cool, dry place. Check the user manual or manufacturer’s website for detailed information and safety guidelines for your specific model.

FROM BUDGET TO BOUGIE, NO TWO POOLS ARE ALIKE. WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT YOUR MONEY TO BUY YOU WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN… AND WHO CAN YOU TRUST TO BUILD IT?

Turning your backyard into a personal paradise is exciting. But if you’re new to the world of swimming pools and spas, getting a grip on design, material and equipment costs can be overwhelming. Read on to demystify the process and see what your budget will buy you… and who you should get to build it.

THE FUNDAMENTALS

Every pool build incurs some fundamental costs including excavation, construction and essential equipment. Almost immediately, your design and construction choices will determine the overall financial outlay, as will your geographic location, so let’s take a closer look.

EXCAVATION AND CONSTRUCTION

First things first, you need to excavate — this means getting access to the site and digging the hole to contain your new pool. Costs will vary according to accessibility — the easier it is to get excavating machinery and other equipment in and out, the better. The more access you have, the bigger the machinery you can use and the quicker the job will be done. The other big factor here is the type of soil and any difficulties presented by the terrain — like steep slopes and awkwardly shaped spaces.

Depending on your site, you may need to repair or relocate service lines and you’ll also need to cover the costs

of removing excavated material and building debris. Excavation will be built into the overall construction cost.

INGROUND POOL OPTIONS AND COSTS

Construction includes the structural components, plumbing and reinforcing. The choice of pool construction material is the single biggest factor in cost at this stage, with a degree of variation between concrete, fibreglass and vinyl-lined pools.

Concrete

Concrete pools are a long-lasting option and offer the greatest flexibility for customisation, which is reflected in the cost. Pricing varies based on the size and complexity of the design and will quickly increase when you introduce additional construction features like bench seating, beach entries or tanning ledges or opt for expensive flourishes, like a fully tiled interior.

One of the best ways to see what your dollar will buy you is to check on the annual SPASA Awards of Excellence for your region. Just click on the button for your state or territory and follow through to the ‘Project’ awards, which are segmented by installation value. Concrete pools are banded by value as: Up to $60,000, Up to $80,000, Up to $120,000 and Up to $240,000. There are also separate categories for Small/ Courtyard Pools Up to $40,000 and Up to $80,000.

Autumn 2024 POOL&SPA | 9 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

Fibreglass

Fibreglass pools are pre-moulded, which makes them quicker to install. They typically cost less than concrete pools, though this depends on size and shape. The smooth and durable fibreglass surface is non-porous, resistant to algae and offers a lowmaintenance alternative to concrete.

Again, available access will determine cost, as the pool shell usually needs to be lifted and dropped into place using a crane. Depending on your site, this may mean lifting the pool over the house completely or avoiding existing obstacles like overhead powerlines or other non-movable services. Access limitations dictate the size of the crane required, which has obvious cost implications. Interruptions to the neighbourhood, like traffic control for example, are also contributors to cost.

Again, for a general guide, check out the SPASA Awards of Excellence in your state or territory under the Projects category, where you’ll find the industry’s best fibreglass pool installations Up to $40,000, Up to $80,000 and Over $80,000.

Vinyl-lined

Vinyl pools are often regarded as cost-effective option, given that the initial install outlay is less than a concrete or fibreglass pool. The wide variety of liner colours and patterns offers some customisation, but the liner will need to be replaced periodically, which adds to overall ownership costs. Traditionally, these

liners have needed replacing every eight to 12 years or so, though vinyl technology improvements are delivering potential for longer lifespans — up to 20 years, according to some manufacturers.

The material is reasonably algae- and stain-resistant, but it can become brittle or crease and tear as it ages, often on the pool floor. Vinyl is also likely to bleach if your pool water isn’t correctly balanced, which makes proper pool care and maintenance essential.

The 2024 SPASA Awards of Excellence has new categories for vinyl-lined pools — Up to $60,000, Up to $120,000 and Over $120,000. Keep an eye on the awards website over the next few months to see typical project examples in each category as the state winners are announced.

BASIC ELEMENTS AND EQUIPMENT

Every pool needs a pool deck and fencing, along with a filtration system (including a pump, filter and skimmer), a chlorinator and some basic lighting. Your pool quote probably includes filtration, chlorinator and lighting — it’ll be spelt out in the itemised document — but it’s unlikely that the pool deck and fencing are a part of the build cost.

FENCING

Temporary fencing is usually supplied for the duration of construction, but you’ll need to decide on your

permanent fencing choice and ensure you meet with local compliance requirements.

Fencing is sold by the linear metre and pricing varies according to the material choice — expect to pay somewhere between AUD200 and 600 per linear metre, with frameless glass sitting at the upper end of the scale.

POOL DECK

The pool deck is another area where costs vary wildly, depending on the size of the space and the material choice. These include timber or composite material decking, concrete, tiling and paving… and then there are choices within choices — concrete and brick pavers sit at around half the cost of other materials such as limestone, travertine and granite, for example.

As a minimum, you can probably allow two or three thousand for a concrete pour and preparation, with the addition of anywhere between AUD50 and 100 per square metre for paving, depending on the material.

THE ADDED EXTRAS

Additional equipment, technology and design features add to the base cost.

SANITISATION AND FILTRATION

A basic chlorine sanitisation system is a cost-effective option, generally sitting somewhere between AUD1500 and 3000, and is probably included in the build cost — be sure to check your quote.

Other alternatives to chlorine include minerals pools or saltwater systems, both of which require a

Making informed decisions means speaking with an expert. ” “

little more investment — either in upfront costs or ongoing outlay. You’ll need to do some calculations based on estimated salt or mineral usage for your specific pool to better understand the financial impact.

UV and ozone systems are designed to boost sanitisation capability, improve clarity and reduce the need for traditional chemical treatments. They’ll add about AUD2000 to 5000 to the budget.

HEATING

Depending on your location, the addition of a heater can really help extend the swimming season. Unless it was included specifically in your original estimate, expect to pay somewhere between AUD5000 and 10,000, depending on pool size. Don’t forget to factor in additional energy costs associated with running the heating system you select.

CLEANING

The ultimate ‘how long’s a piece of string?’ question, cleaners come in

all shapes and sizes, with degrees of automation and functionality that make them more or less suited to specific pool environments and to your desired lifestyle.

In most cases, you can make that decision a little further down the track, but if you’re thinking about an in-floor cleaning system, it’s best to speak up at the design stage. You won’t get much change from AUD10,000 for your troubles, but you will get a self-cleaning pool.

EVERYTHING ELSE

Building a swimming pool is a significant investment, and understanding the elements and costs involved is key to making informed decisions. The outlay can extend to landscaping, outdoor rooms, kitchens and barbecues, heating, seating, decor, design and other lifestyle additions.

Whether you opt for a basic pool or aspire to create a luxurious retreat, careful planning and prioritising

essential features will ensure that your dream pool not only enhances your home but also aligns with your budget. By assessing the available choices available and being aware of the potential for future additions, you can transform your backyard into a haven that suits both your vision and financial reality.

WHO CAN YOU TRUST?

When you decide to buy a swimming pool or spa, it’s the first step in your journey to a better lifestyle for you and your family.

Making informed decisions means speaking with an expert who can guide you through the purchase and installation process, so finding someone you can trust is important.

ANZACINSPIRED

Crowd-pleasing favourites loved on both sides of the ditch

WE MAY NEVER SETTLE ON THE ORIGIN OF THESE SWEET TREATS, BUT WE CAN ALL AGREE THEY’RE DELICIOUS.

As far as the rest of the world is concerned, Aussies and Kiwis are interchangeable… but we know better. Our finely tuned ears immediately distinguish one accent from the other and we understand that our distinct histories and cultural influences have delivered two unique places and populations. Of course, we’ll always band together when we meet in far-flung places and feel free to have a friendly dig at one another almost immediately, thanks to a deeply held — yet lighthearted — rivalry. What we don’t always agree on, however, is the origin of some of our most celebrated cakes, biscuits and desserts.

Pavlova

The pavlova, a light and airy dessert named after the legendary Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova, is a sweet meringue-based delicacy topped with fresh fruits and whipped cream. Simple and sublime. Both Australia and New Zealand have strong claims to its invention, leading to a spirited transTasman disagreement.

HISTORY

The origins of the pavlova date back to the 1920s, with both countries asserting that their chefs were the first to create this masterpiece. New Zealanders attribute the creation to an unnamed chef, who prepared the dish for Anna Pavlova during her tour in 1926. On the other hand, Australians argue that their chef, Herbert Sachse, crafted the first pavlova at the Esplanade Hotel in Perth. No matter which side is right, it’s been a staple dessert across both countries from the 1920s onward.

PAVLOVA RECIPE

Ingredients

• 4 large egg whites

• 1 cup caster sugar

• 1 teaspoon white vinegar

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1 teaspoon cornflour (known as cornstarch in other parts of the world, not to be confused with corn flour, a finer flour made from whole corn kernels)

• 1 cup whipped cream

• Fresh fruit for topping. Tradition dictates kiwifruit and strawberry slices, along with passionfruit, but you can top with whatever you fancy — mango, peaches, berries, cherries — you really can’t go wrong.

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 150°C and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

2. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form, gradually adding sugar.

3. Gently fold in vinegar, vanilla extract and cornstarch.

4. Spoon the mixture onto the prepared tray, forming a circular shape.

5. Bake for 1 hour, then allow to cool.

6. Top with whipped cream and fresh fruit before serving.

Lamingtons

Everyone loves a lamington… squares of sponge cake dipped and coated in chocolate icing then rolled in desiccated coconut. While the lamington is widely accepted as being Australian, some still claim the recipe originally travelled from New Zealand. Regardless of who’s right, the delicious chocolatey squares have been a favourite in kitchens, bakeries and cake stalls across both countries for more than a century.

HISTORY

Legend has it that Australia’s Governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901, Lord Lamington, is the true inventor. Noted for being a frugal man, the story has it that a maid accidentally dropped a sponge cake into chocolate and Lord Lamington suggested coating it with coconut… and so a star was born. Some argue that the recipe landed on Australian shores courtesy of Lady Lamington, a New Zealander, so the debate continues to rage.

CHEATS’ LAMINGTON RECIPE

Using a store-bought sponge cake cuts down preparation time.

Ingredients

• 1 sponge cake (store-bought or homemade)

• 2 cups icing sugar

• 1/3 cup cocoa powder

• 1/2 cup milk

• 4 cups desiccated coconut

Method

1. Cut the sponge cake into squares.

2. Sift icing sugar and cocoa powder into a bowl. Mix in milk to make the chocolate icing.

3. Dip each cake square into the chocolate icing, ensuring even coverage.

4. Roll the coated cake in coconut until fully covered on all sides.

5. Allow time to set before serving.

Anzac biscuits

Anzac biscuits are a beloved Australian and New Zealand tradition, especially around 25 April each year, when we observe Anzac Day and commemorate soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during World War I, along with others who have served. These crispy, golden biscuits are known for their simplicity and long shelf life.

HISTORY

Anzac biscuits have a historical connection to the war effort, as it is believed that they were sent by loved ones to soldiers overseas. The absence of eggs in the recipe allowed the biscuits to stay fresh during the long journey. Both Australia and New Zealand embrace the Anzac biscuit as a symbol of resilience and unity.

ANZAC BISCUIT RECIPE

Ingredients

• 1 cup rolled oats

• 1 cup desiccated coconut

• 1 cup all-purpose flour

• 1 cup brown sugar

• 125 g butter

• 2 tablespoons golden syrup

• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 tablespoons boiling water

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C and line baking trays with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, mix oats, coconut, flour and brown sugar.

3. In a saucepan, melt butter and golden syrup.

4. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and add to the melted butter mixture.

5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix well.

6. Drop spoonfuls of the mixture onto the baking trays, allowing space for spreading.

7. Bake for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown.

8. Allow to cool on the trays before transferring to a wire rack. While we may not settle on the true origin of these iconic recipes, one thing is certain — all three are much more than just sweet treats. They are symbols of cultural significance that both Aussies and Kiwis hold dear — desserts that embody the spirit of our friendship, our camaraderie and our shared history… and that’s something to be savoured.

Experience the benefits of ozone

Using ozone to disinfect water has been around since the 1900s. It is an exceptionally effective way of purifying swimming pools and drinking water because of its powerful disinfection and oxidising properties, killing bacteria, viruses and microorganisms to ensure safer swimming conditions and water supply. Ozone does this 3000x more powerfully than chlorine, eliminating 99.9% of microorganisms.

Using ozone to oxidise pool water also means using 80% less conventional pool chemicals, minimising chemical by-products, lowering the overall

chemical load and reducing salt demand by 75% against standard pool systems. Reducing chlorine usage makes it a powerful, environmentally friendly and comprehensive resolution for swimming pool water purification.

Ozone also improves water clarity by oxidising compounds that cause cloudiness or discoloration while getting rid of unpleasant odours and reducing skin or eye irritation often associated with chlorine. The result is a more pleasant swimming environment that’s safe for everyone.

You don’t need to add anything to your pool to create the ozone when using the Brauer Swim

B-Fresh Pool System, as it will do all the work using patented technology and the air we breathe.

When the B-Fresh system runs the pool pump, water flows through the patented Ozone Injection Manifold and activates the ozone module that gets rid of the nasty chloramines and microorganisms, keeping your swimming pool water safe for everyone to enjoy.

By combining electrolysis with ozone technology using a small amount of salt, which is undetectable to taste, the

water is disinfected quickly and is free from impurities. Your pool will be naturally fresher and safer to swim in all year round. This technology delivers unparalleled water quality, purifying your pool 3000 times more powerfully than traditional systems.

INFRAREDDY... OR NOT?

Are portable saunas worth the hype?

AS MORE AUSTRALIANS LEAN INTO THE WELLNESS WORLD, SAUNA USE IS ON THE RISE… BUT HOW EASY IS IT TO HAVE ONE AT HOME?

The popularity of saunas has soared in recent years, with users seeking relaxation, detoxification and a multitude of other health benefits. As many of us look to create a complete lifestyle haven at home, portable saunas are seen as an appealing and achievable option. They come in a range of formats — with the price tags to match — so we’ve outlined a few differences including space considerations, energy requirements and other associated costs to help you make sense of what’s on offer.

TYPES OF PORTABLE SAUNAS

Before you dig in and start researching, think about some basic factors including your available space, who will be using the sauna and how often it will be used. It’s probably worth having a vague budget in mind as well.

POP-UP INFRARED SAUNAS

Pop-up saunas utilise infrared heating elements that rely on electromagnetic radiation to heat, which provides an efficient and targeted experience.

They’re affordable — you can pick one up for as little as a couple of

hundred bucks — and are easy to set up and dismantle. They usually consist of a collapsible frame with strategically placed panels that emit non-harmful infrared light that penetrates the skin and generates a deep detoxifying sweat. The lack of steam gives you a clean and dry sauna experience — except the sweat, that is.

Pop-ups take up very little space, so they can be used in small rooms, apartments and outdoor spaces and then quickly and easily packed away when not in use. Their smaller size also means they have a lower energy consumption than some other styles.

26 | POOL&SPA Autumn 2024 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

On the downside, they are usually only built for one person (two at most) and may not provide the same heat distribution as more spacious options.

PORTABLE CABIN INFRARED SAUNAS

Portable cabins use the same infrared heating technology as pop-ups, though the panels tend to be larger and they also cover a greater surface area, which ensures a more even distribution of heat.

The cabin-style design offers a more spacious and comfortable

experience and is suitable for multiple users, depending on the size selected. Some models incorporate additional features like chromotherapy (colour light therapy) and built-in audio for an enhanced relaxation experience. These saunas are ideal for anyone looking for a more immersive and customisable sauna session.

Portable cabins will use more energy than pop-up styles or infrared blankets, but accurate costs will depend entirely on your usage and your local kilowatt-hour energy pricing. Check the kilowatt rating of the heater (energy-efficient heating

elements will lower running costs) to do some quick calculations.

You’ll probably be less inclined to pack them down and put them away between uses, so they are less ‘portable’ than other choices. They require more space than a pop-up but are still more compact than a traditional sauna. If you’ve got room in a suitable covered outdoor or indoor space and are likely to be a regular users, this could be the option for you.

Pricing starts at about AUD2000.00 and increases with size and capacity.

INFRARED BLANKETS

Definitely a one-man option, infrared blankets are extremely portable, versatile and space-efficient. They use flexible heating elements woven into the blanket fabric and are designed to envelope the user, creating a cocoonlike environment that promotes sweating and relaxation.

While not as roomy as other options, they offer unrivalled portability and convenience, allowing the user to enjoy a sauna session while lying down or sitting. Running costs are minimal compared with other units, so these are generally the most energy-efficient choice.

They’re available in a range of makes and models, with price starting at around AUD200 and topping out in the range of AUD600–700.

The cabin-style design offers a more spacious and comfortable experience.

PORTABLE STEAM SAUNAS

Not so different from the pop-up infrared saunas, these designs tend to favour a single occupant. They utilise the more traditional steam heating method — an element is used to generate steam by heating water, creating a humid and warm environment, which opens pores and promotes sweating. They take a little more time to heat up and generally produce a lower overall temperature than infrared varieties.

These come in all shapes and sizes, with prices ranging from just over AUD100 to just under AUD1000, depending on the construction and the steam generation technology used.

Whatever your choice, make sure it aligns with your wellness goals and lifestyle. With so many styles and formats available, it’s now easy to embrace the soothing warmth of a sauna at home, elevating your workout experience in the pursuit of a healthier, happier you.

QUICK TIPS

SHOCK TREATMENT

When and how to shock your pool

Pool shock, also known as super chlorination, is the process of adding a concentrated dose of chlorine or other sanitiser to the pool water to rapidly raise the levels. This helps to effectively sanitise the pool by killing bacteria, algae and other organic contaminants.

Shocking the pool also oxidises organic debris, such as sweat, sunscreen and leaves, helping to clarify the water and improve overall water quality, so it’s something that should be a regular part of your maintenance routine.

CHANGES TO WATER CHEMISTRY

When you shock your pool, several changes occur in the water chemistry:

• Increase in free chlorine (FC) levels: Shocking raises the FC level significantly to kill off contaminants.

• Reduction in combined chlorine (CC) levels: CC levels drop as the shock oxidises and eliminates organic waste.

• pH adjustment: Shocking may cause a temporary increase in pH levels, so it’s important to test and adjust pH as needed after shocking.

Autumn 2024 POOL&SPA | 33 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Maria Zamchiy
© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Evgeniya Sheydt
Consider shocking your pool after heavy rain, high temperatures or periods of heavy pool usage. ”

TYPES OF SHOCK CHEMICALS AND WHEN TO USE THEM

Shocking chemicals can be broadly divided into two types: chlorine-based and non-chlorine-based.

Chlorine-based is the most common and is available in granular or liquid form. It contains high concentrations of chlorine (usually calcium hypochlorite or sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione) and works quickly to sanitise the pool water. It’s suitable for regular maintenance and for treating algae outbreaks.

Use chlorine-based shock for routine maintenance, treating algae blooms and restoring chlorine levels.

Non-chlorine shock is also known as potassium monopersulfate or MPS shock. Because it doesn’t contain chlorine it’s a suitable alternative for pools with chlorine sensitivities or for use in bromine pools. It oxidises contaminants without affecting chlorine levels, making it ideal for routine oxidation and clarifying water.

Steps to shock your pool

1 Test the water: Use a reliable pool testing kit to measure chlorine, pH and alkalinity levels.

2 Calculate shock dosage: Determine the amount of shock needed based on pool size, current chlorine levels and manufacturer’s recommendations.

3 Pre-dissolve shock: If using granular shock, dissolve it in a bucket of water before adding it to the pool to prevent potential damage to pool surfaces.

4 Application: Add the dissolved shock solution evenly around the pool perimeter while the filtration system is running.

5 Circulate and wait: Allow the shock to circulate in the pool for at least 8 hours or as recommended by the manufacturer.

6 Retest and adjust: After the recommended wait time, retest the water and adjust pH levels if necessary.

Use non-chlorine shock for routine oxidation, improving water clarity and reducing combined chlorine levels without affecting free chlorine levels.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Always wear protective gloves and goggles when handling shock chemicals. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and dosage guidelines carefully. Don’t mix different types of chemicals and always store them out of reach of children and pets.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

Regularly clean the pool surface and skimmer baskets to prevent debris build-up and improve water quality. Be sure to maintain proper pool filtration and circulation to ensure effective distribution of shock throughout the pool.

Consider shocking your pool after heavy rain, high temperatures or periods of heavy pool usage to maintain water clarity and sanitation. For best results, shock in the evening or at night to minimise chlorine loss due to sunlight.

By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to maintain a clean, safe and enjoyable swimming environment at home. For further information, search for Pool & Spa Service Technician and Pool & Spa Service Retailer in the Find a Provider tab on the SPASA website.

Cost effective year-round comfort

Heat pumps offer an efficient and environmentally friendly solution for maintaining comfortable water temperatures yearround. The advanced heat pumps on offer from AstralPool utilise inverter technology to harness heat energy from the surrounding air, transferring it to the pool water through a process of compression and condensation. This method of heating is highly efficient, making it a costeffective and sustainable choice for pool owners.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

One of the primary benefits of installing a heat pump is their exceptional energy efficiency. Unlike traditional heating methods such as gas heaters, which rely on consuming natural gas or Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) to generate heat, heat pumps simply transfer existing heat from the air to the water,

making them significantly more energy efficient. This not only reduces operating costs but also minimizes the carbon footprint associated with heating a swimming pool, contributing to a more sustainable environment.

QUIET OPERATION

AstralPool heat pumps are also designed to operate quietly and efficiently, providing consistent and reliable heating performance without causing disruption or noise pollution. This allows pool owners to prioritise peace and tranquility, and enjoy their outdoor spaces without being disturbed by the noise of a running heater.

EASE OF INTEGRATION

Unlike solar heating systems, which require extensive roof space and complex plumbing installations, heat pumps can be easily integrated into existing pool systems with minimal disruption.

AstralPool heat pumps can also be integrated with different automations systems like the AstralPool Connect 10 or the AstralPool Halo Chlor to be seamlessly added to an established pool equipment eco-system.

EXTEND THE SWIMMING SEASON

Offering precise temperature control, heat pumps allow pool owners to maintain their desired water temperature with accuracy and consistency. This ensures optimal comfort for swimmers and extends the swimming season, allowing pools to be enjoyed earlier in

the Spring and later into Autumn. The AstralPool heat pumps are available in a range of sizes and capacities to suit different pool sizes and heating requirements, ensuring that there is a suitable option for every application.

Heat pumps provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for maintaining comfortable water temperatures year-round, allowing pool owners to enjoy their outdoor spaces to the fullest. Scan the QR code and explore which AstralPool heat pump best suits your pool.

ANATOMY OF A

SWIMMING POOL

Gates, hinges, closures and fencing

IN OUR ‘ANATOMY OF A SWIMMING POOL’ ARTICLE SERIES WE CHECK OUT THE VARIOUS PARTS AND SYSTEMS THAT MAKE UP YOUR SWIMMING POOL. IN THIS ISSUE, WE’RE LOOKING AT THE SEPARATE ELEMENTS OF POOL FENCING — WHAT THEY ARE, WHAT THEY DO AND WHY EACH IS IMPORTANT.

Australia takes pool safety very seriously, as evidenced through our strict fencing regulations. While largely governed by the Australian Standard for pool fencing (AS1926.1 – 2012), there are many local variations effected under legislation at a state or territory level. For comprehensive information on

pool fencing rules — including the applicable standard and complete barrier law details for each Australian state and territory — see the Tips & Tricks section under Pool & Spa Owners on the SPASA website.

In this article, we delve into each of the components of a pool fencing system and see how they form a critical aspect of swimming pool safety.

1. THE GATEWAY TO SAFETY: POOL GATES

The gate is the access point to the swimming pool area, but it’s more than just a portal for entry — it’s a critical element of the overall safety barrier system. Australian regulations dictate that pool gates must be self-closing and self-latching. While the self-closing feature prevents unintended access to the pool area,

36 | POOL&SPA Autumn 2024 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

the self-latch mechanism adds an extra layer of safety by ensuring the gate remains securely closed once someone has entered and it has closed behind them.

Choosing a high-quality pool gate is essential, as it needs to withstand the harsh Australian climate as well as meeting stringent safety standards. This is not an area to skimp on. Corrosion-resistant materials, such as powder-coated aluminium, stainless steel or glass, ensure durability over time and can withstand the constant coming and going.

2. THE SILENT WORKHORSE: GATE HINGES

Behind every smoothly operating pool gate lies a set of hinges that bear the weight of safety. Hinges play a pivotal role in the functionality and longevity

of the gate, so this is another area where investment in a quality solution pays dividends.

Using adjustable hinges allows for precise alignment of the gate, which ensures it closes securely every time. This not only safeguards residents and visitors to your property but also guarantees compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.

Hinges constructed from corrosionresistant materials stand a better chance against exposure to pool chemicals and the harsh outdoor conditions.

3. THE MECHANISM OF SECURITY: GATE CLOSURES

While hinges enable movement, closures are the mechanism that ensures the gate remains closed and securely latched. Various types are available, including hydraulic or

spring-loaded options. Today’s soft close options are a welcome addition, for those of us driven to distraction after years of listening to pool gates slam shut. Happily, there are retrofit options for those still suffering from spring-loaded slams. A soft and smooth closure also reduces wear on gate hinges.

Regardless of the type, the closure mechanism must meet applicable Australian safety standards. Regular maintenance is also essential to ensure the proper functioning of the closure over time.

4. THE UNYIELDING BARRIER: FENCING

Fencing is the backbone of a pool safety barrier. It acts as a continuous barrier around the pool perimeter, ensuring that access is limited and controlled. The height, design and construction of the fence are all regulated to prevent unauthorised access and enhance overall safety.

Common materials for pool fencing include aluminium, glass and steel, each offering a combination of durability, visibility and aesthetic appeal. The spacing between fence components, such as vertical bars, is carefully regulated to prevent climbing and ensure the effectiveness of the barrier.

ENSURING COMPLIANCE FOR PEACE OF MIND

In Australian residential environments, adherence to pool safety regulations is not a choice but a legal requirement. Homeowners must ensure that their pool enclosure includes all the necessary components — gates, hinges, closures and fencing — and that they are installed and maintained according to regulations.

To find a fencing supplier and installer or a pool barrier inspector in your area, visit the POOL & SPA Lifestyle website, click on Find a Provider and filter the required categories.

The clear difference

For most pool owners, once you have installed your pool or are simply looking for a replacement, the pool filter may one of the least thought about components necessary for the effective function of your swimming pool. Overshadowed by other, more exciting pool equipment items like the cleaner and pump, the pool filter is incredibly

critical to ensuring you get the cleanest swimming water.

Working in partnership with the swimming pool pump, there are many types of filters that offer certain advantages including optimum filtration, efficiency, installation, ease of use and maintenance. Desirable water clarity should be one of the most important aspects a filter should provide but

so too is the level of its maintenance and effects on the environment. These are all important factors to consider.

POSI-CLEAR CARTRIDGE FILTER

Introducing the PosiClear RP Cartridge Filter from Pentair — the clear solution to everything you could ask for in a filter. This new design is nearly 50% more efficient than

many other single cartridge filters on the market and filters down as low as 20 microns. In addition to its excellent filtration properties, the Posi-Clear is designed to be easy to use and maintain, giving you more quality time in the pool than cleaning it.

EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE

What really sets the Posi-Clear apart from its competitors is the raised

38 | POOL&SPA Autumn 2024 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

offset port for the water to enter the filter. This design creates a cyclonic effect inside the filter which disperses large matter and debris to the side to get caught in the internal trapping ribs. This debris then falls to the drainage area where it can be easily disposed of. Through this ingenious and effective design, larger debris won’t get caught in the cartridge

element thereby reducing its filtration effectiveness. What this means is less cleaning and more effective filtration.

WELL-THOUGHT-OUT DESIGN

When designing the PosiClear, ease of use and maintenance was key to its creation. Like most other filters that require multiple bends to connect to the pump, the Posi-Clear only

needs one. This means better water movement efficiency and ultimately less strain on your pool pump. Other well-thoughtout designs include easy access to cleaning the filter elements through a quick release locking ring, a wider diameter cartridge to keep filter element pleats further apart for better filtration coverage and a larger drain to allow for larger debris to drain away.

IDEAL FOR ALL POOLS

The Posi-Clear Cartridge Filter from Pentair has been designed for use on all pools, especially for pool pads with limited access or small spaces. Available in three different sizes, the Posi-Clear can cover pool sizes ranging from a small pool of 20,000 litres up to 120,000 litre pools. With all it has to offer, the PosiClear will undoubtedly be your hero of your pool.

DESIGN IDEAS FOR FISHPONDS AND FOUNTAINS

There are water feature options to suit every backyard and design aesthetic — from rugged natural options to contemporary sleek lines, you’ll find something to fit your needs.

NATURAL

Draw inspiration from your location and develop a pond design that mimics the natural surrounding habitat, whether that’s rainforest, coastal or mountain bushland. Use irregular shapes, rocks and aquatic plants to blend your design seamlessly with the local landscape, creating an oasis that attracts native wildlife and enhances the aesthetic appeal.

FLOURISHING FOUNTAIN

Fountains offer a versatile design option, ranging from classic tiered structures to modern, minimalist designs. Incorporate materials like stone or ceramic to complement your existing outdoor decor. In warmer regions, fountains also act as a cooling feature on hot summer days.

KOI HAVEN

Koi ponds are a popular choice for fish enthusiasts and those who love a minimalist design. With their vibrant colours and graceful movements, koi fish add a dynamic and lively element to your backyard. Ensure proper filtration and depth for the health and wellbeing of your fish.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Fishponds are exempt from pool and safety fencing requirements in most Australian states and territories, provided they have a depth of 30 cm or less. Before installing, you should check with your local authority to ensure this is the case in your specific area.

In addition, you need to think about a few factors to ensure your water haven is providing the right conditions for fish and other animals.

FILTRATION AND AERATION

Proper filtration and aeration are crucial for maintaining water quality and ensuring fish health. Invest in a

reliable filtration system to keep the water clean and oxygenated.

DEPTH AND SHADE

Incorporating areas with different depths (ensuring none are deeper than 30 cm) helps accommodate the needs of different fish species. You will also need to provide ample shading and appropriate aquatic plants to protect them from harsh Australian sunlight. This will also help regulate water temperature and support the overall wellbeing of your aquatic pets.

FISH COMPATIBILITY

Research and choose fish species that are compatible with the Australian climate and can coexist. Native species will be well adapted to local conditions, so do a little research first.

BIRDS AND INSECTS

A water feature will probably attract birds looking for a drink and a bath, adding a nice natural touch to your backyard. Ensure the pond, fountain or bird bath design factors the safety of small birds by including shallow areas for easy access.

CLIMATE

Our climate can often be harsh, with hot temperatures, droughts and fires. Look for drought-resistant plants to place around the pond and consider installing a rainwater harvesting system to maintain water levels during dry periods.

The Block’s eco-friendly tree change

Aussie favourite reality show The Block ditched city life in 2022 and headed for a tree change. Relocating to Gisborne in the Macedon Ranges, the show positioned contestants on 10-acre blocks and tasked them with planning and landscaping more than 700m2 of land for the off-grid, seven-star energy rated homes, meaning sustainability was a factor in all design specs.

An ambitious resortstyle design saw House 1 contestants Sarah Jane and Tom declared winners of the Landscaping Week challenge, thanks to a little help from award winning pool builder, Daniel Cutugno of Horizon Pools.

The project is a stunning example of how indoor and outdoor spaces can

seamlessly blend to create an aesthetic throughline that gives a luxury feel across the entire property.

“When Tom and SarahJane asked us to construct a setting worthy of the scale of the interior, the challenge was to match their giant interiors and glorious alfresco areas with a breathtaking pool view where the scale and serenity of the surrounding countryside could fully be appreciated,” Daniel said.

While the project looks extravagant, it’s also ecofriendly, a focus that saw it take home gold in the Sustainable Project category at the 2023 SPASA Awards of Excellence.

“With the properties being off grid, it was important to utilise energy efficient pool equipment to achieve energy and water

efficiencies. We opted for cartridge filters, a variable speed pump, an automatic dosing system and a pool cover that could deliver on those goals.”

Daniel also made recommendations to reorient the pool from the original design. The result is a better connection between indoors and out, maximising the stunning view across the Macedon Ranges and delivering a useable and beautiful space that was sure to appeal to buyers.

The build was challenging, thanks to limited access, difficult weather conditions and tight time constraints, but

Horizon was up to the challenge. This pool not only holds the record as the largest ever installed on The Block, but host Scott Cam also declared it “the best fibreglass pool” he’s ever seen.

TECH TROUBLESHOOTING Heat pumps

Like everything else, pool ownership involves a fair bit of tech these days, and it might not always run smoothly. There’s often a simple solution to what looks like a complex problem and that’s where we can help. Before you tear your hair out, we’ll run through some common issues, possible causes and potential fixes for pool equipment problems. This issue’s tech troubleshooting topic is… heat pumps.

Many pool owners across ANZ use a heat pump to heat pool water. These devices use a heat transfer principle, drawing heat from surrounding air and using a heat exchanger to warm water as it flows through the pump and back out into the pool. WATER WORKOUTS

FOR AUTUMN WELLNESS

DON’T LET SHORTER DAYS CURB YOUR ACTIVITY, THESE LEG WORKOUTS WILL TAKE YOU WELL INTO AUTUMN.

As autumn sets in and the days start to cool, maintaining an active lifestyle can become a challenge. Why bid farewell to your summer fitness routine when you can embrace invigorating water workouts in the comfort of your own backyard?

THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS

Working out in water is the double whammy — delivering both physical and therapeutic benefits.

The added buoyancy is great for anyone suffering joint pain or arthritis, providing an easier way to get the heart rate up and enjoy exercise. The added resistance also enhances muscle engagement, which means you’re getting more from your workout than land-based exercise.

While there’s usually plenty of warmth left in our autumn days — making the pool a great place to be — you can also turn up the heat when the temperatures start to drop… just enough to take the edge off.

LEG DAY, EVERY DAY

The resistance and buoyancy of water make it easier to focus on legs. Give the leg press a miss and get into these easy at-home options.

A. WATER WALKING

Simple, yet highly effective, water walking is a great start to your water workout. Stand in the shallow end of the pool and walk forward, lifting your knees as high as you can with each step. The resistance intensifies the workout, targeting

C. POOLSIDE SQUATS

Everyone’s favourite, squats are a powerful lower body workout. Stand with your back against the pool edge, with the water just above waist high. Lower your body as if sitting back into an imaginary chair. Focus on keeping your knees aligned with your ankles and your back straight. Complete 3 sets of 15–20 squats for a powerful lower body workout. For an added degree of difficulty, try single leg squats which will engage your core muscles as you try to maintain stability.

WALKING AND JOGGING

A. WATER JOGGING

Add some cardio into your aquatic routine with water jogging. Move to deeper water and jog in place, lifting your knees high and pumping your arms. The water resistance provides an excellent cardiovascular workout while reducing impact on your joints. Aim for 10–15 minutes of water jogging to elevate your heart rate and boost endurance.

your quadriceps, hamstrings and calves. Aim for 10–15 minutes of brisk water walking to kickstart your leg workout.

B. LEG LIFTS

Leg lifts strengthen your hip flexors and improve overall leg flexibility. Move to deeper water and hold on to the pool edge with your arms behind you. Lift one leg straight out in front of you, keeping it extended for a few seconds before switching to the other leg. Repeat this exercise for 10–15 reps on each leg.

Sideways walking will engage different muscle groups and improve leg strength. Stand in shoulderdeep water and take sideways steps, maintaining constant tension in your leg muscles. Perform three sets of 20 steps in each direction to reap the benefits of this dynamic exercise.

RESISTANCE TRAINING IN THE WATER

A. WATER LEG LIFTS

Leg lifts target the outer thighs and hip muscles, helping tone and sculpt your legs. Stand in the pool

with the water at chest level. Lift one leg straight out to the side and then lower it back down. Repeat on the same leg for 15–20 reps before switching to the other leg.

B. TREAD WATER

Treading water is an excellent fullbody workout that particularly targets the legs. Move your legs in a circular motion while keeping your upper body afloat. This low-impact exercise builds endurance and strengthens the muscles in your legs. Aim for 10–15 minutes of continuous water treading for a challenging workout.

AUTUMN-FOCUSED WATER WORKOUTS

As the heat of summer wanes and autumn breezes bring cooler temperatures, tailor your water workouts to embrace the changing season:

A. SUNSET STRETCH

Take advantage of the beautiful autumn evenings by incorporating a sunset stretch routine in your pool. Gently float on your back, allowing the water to support your body weight. Perform slow, controlled leg stretches, targeting your hamstrings, quadriceps and calves. The serene atmosphere and cooling temperatures create a relaxing and meditative fitness experience.

B. LEAF CHASE

This one’s for kids… and the cleaner. Add a touch of autumn-inspired fun by tossing a few leaves into the pool and challenging everyone to chase, gather and remove them using various leg movements. It’ll get everyone moving in no time.

As autumn unfolds and we bid farewell to summer, your backyard pool is still the best place to be for invigorating exercise. By focusing on the therapeutic benefits of water with these simple routines, you’ll sail through the season and head into winter in better shape than ever.
