SPRING 2016

The joys of spring

WEST WEDDINGS SPRING 2016 The first issue of the year is always a special one, and what can be better to mark new beginnings than a springtime wedding? Our new issue is full of the magic of the season – dresses just made to dance the night away in, flowers that are sure to make your heart sing, the most gorgeous accessories to match your gown and stunning photography to treasure forever. Our photoshoot was a day filled with sunshine and bright blooms, working with some amazing local suppliers at the pretty Somerset venue of Ston Easton Park. Turn to page 49 to see the results, taken by the talented Eleanor Cashman from Interlace Photography. And to see some photos from the cutting room floor that feature the cats who really wanted to be a part of the shoot, head to our Facebook page! My favourite part of the magazine is always the real weddings, and I’m thrilled that five couples have agreed to share all the details of their celebrations, including a vintage-inspired wedding at Coombe Lodge that I was privileged to be a guest at. Over on page 77, we have a look around some of the loveliest venues in the area, including Bowood Hotel Spa and Golf Resort and Clearwell Castle. For those of you who have always dreamed of saying your vows by the water, there’s also a selection of venues that beautifully fit this description, from ancient mills to Victorian mansions. So throw open the windows, let the sunshine in and start planning your perfect day.

ristol boutique Anne Harding is starting off 2016 with a brand new venture, a specialist cleaning store. Situated next to the wedding shop, Green Sleeves will be offering an environmentally friendly cleaning service for all types of garments, including wedding dresses and suits. “The chemicals used in dry cleaning are very damaging to the environment, but the equipment we have here at Green Sleeves are able to clean clothes perfectly without any need for harsh products,” explains Kerri Foster, the owner of the business. “We’ve been amazed at how well garments that were traditionally dry cleaned are coming up after being cleaned in our machines – it’s like they’re brand new!” The price for a wedding dress clean is £75, and there’s also the option to have your gown professionally boxed up for safe and secure storage. The new business is the perfect complement to the existing boutique, meaning that you can get your dress and suits for the big day and then cleaned afterwards, all under one roof! One of our favourite hair stylists, Stacey Jade, has been recognised as one of the UK’s very best hair stylists, after she recently triumphed in The Bride category at the 2015 Britain’s Best competition. Run by the National Hairdressers’ Federation, this event is one of the highlights of the NHF’s calendar, attracting hairdressing talent from across the country. There were a record number of entries across the 14 different categories, so it was a hard-fought competition that makes Stacey’s win even more impressive. Stacey offers mobile hairdressing across the South West region, and specialises in bridal styling. This award goes to join her ever-growing trophy cabinet, which includes wins from The Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards and being shortlisted for the 2016 Wedding Industry Awards. ulti-talented Jane Eveleigh from Beez Neez Bunting has branched out into a new area – hats! She has now launched Jane Eveleigh Millinery, a Bristol-based business that makes and sells unique hats and headwear. “After going to the Bridport Hat Festival, I realised I wanted to make them myself,” explains Jane. “I then did a course in Bath, followed by private lessons with The British School of Millinery in Cheltenham.” Studying at the school lead to an exciting piece of publicity for Jane. “ITV came to film a piece for the Cheltenham Gold Cup on ladies fashions, and one of my hats was featured in their national fashion coverage!” Jane describes her style as confident, colourful and stylish, with hats available in a wide variety of fabrics and styles. “Making hats has been a real challenge but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the process. Hats are having a resurgence and their popularity is encouraging to a new maker.” Check out Jane’s Facebook page to see a gallery of her latest wedding-worthy creations! hampagne at the ready – wedding fair company Love Actually Weddings will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this February as it looks forward to another year of wedding fairs across the South West. David and Emma first met each other in 2002 while working for Bristol’s insurance giant Clerical Medical, and took the decision at the end of 2005 to set up their own business. It was on Emma’s 30th birthday in February 2006 when the paperwork was completed and Love Actually Weddings was formed. Emma remembers the day the paperwork was signed. “It was all very scary, as we had both left good jobs and didn’t really know where to start! The first two years were extremely hard. We started to build our brand, created a number of websites and researched the wedding fair industry extensively. It was like starting a new school but we relied on the skills and experience that we had gained from our previous employers.” Love Actually Weddings project managed a number of shows before hosting its first event at Tortworth Court in September 2008. “If we hadn’t built up that knowledge and experience in those early years, I’m not sure we would be celebrating our 10th anniversary this month,” says David. “It’s great that we can celebrate Emma’s 40th birthday with Love Actually Weddings in good shape, and look forward to the next 10 years in business!” The last decade has seen the company organise over 150 events and register over 13,000 brides. Based in Bristol, Love Actually Weddings has built up a brand across the South West and it now hosts wedding fairs in Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire. To find out what events are happening this year, simply visit its comprehensive website which details everything you need to know. “It’s been a roller-coaster ride these last 10 years but a fantastic one,” says Emma. “We would just like to thank our DVD cupboard for giving us the inspiration that helped us form a brand – ‘David and Emma Weddings’ doesn’t really have the same ring or impact as ‘Love Actually Weddings’!”

Choreographing your first dance, ordering your cake, sorting your guest list?

. .. s t r e p x e e h t k s a o t d e e You n These useful tips from our industry experts will leave you stress free

Let them eat cake

Invitation only

Question: Neither my fiancé nor I are confident dancers but we’d really like to do something special for our first dance, rather than just shuffling about the floor! What would you suggest?

Question: We’ve just booked our venue so I’ve started to plan the details of the day. When it comes to the cake, how soon should we order it or book a consultation with the maker?

Question: We have a large number of families and friends, so our guest list is getting big and expensive! Do you think it’s OK to have some guests just for the evening, or will it offend people?

Anne Gliddon from Pretty Amazing Cakes says:

Helen Dorritt from West Weddings says:

Answer: From all the couples I’ve spoken to, the consensus is that the best thing about the first dance is that it’s likely be the first moment you and your man have had together alone and undisturbed since the ceremony. At the core of it, the dancing doesn’t really matter, as it’s more of a culturally approved PDA. I’d therefore advise against having a flamboyant dance that disrupts this opportunity for solitude. Going for Strictly-esque choreography might impress people, but it can be an added stress that can distract you both from the moment. I’d suggest choosing an option that would truly let you sink into the moment. Learning half a dozen very basic moves can give you enough material to easily make you both look like natural dancers. Most dance instructors should be able to help you with this (and it’s my specialty), so you can have a dance that’ll become a favourite part of your special day.

Answer: This is a question that I’m asked

W: WWW.THATDANCINGCHAP.COM

W: WWW.PRETTYAMAZINGCAKES.CO.UK

Answer: There are advantages to both types of reception. With a two tier event, you can spend quality time with everyone as guests are staggered. It can also be a cheaper option due to less food and drink being required. On the other hand, inviting everyone for all of it means no-one will feel left out and everyone gets to enjoy the full experience, including the ceremony which, for some guests, will be the most important part of your wedding. Your friends and family love you, so they shouldn’t get offended or make you feel bad if, for budgetary reasons, you do opt for some of them being evening guests only. I would advise not splitting ‘groups’ of guests up, however – if you’re inviting work colleagues, for example, make sure they all get the same invite, or this could lead to resentment. If you decide to have everyone there for the whole event, you can be canny about your costs, such as opting for a buffet instead of a three course meal, not having an open bar and asking guests to bring homemade cakes for dessert.

a lot! My advice to couples is that once you have booked your venue, that’s a good time to arrange a consultation. This is applicable even if your wedding is some way off, as it allows plenty of time to discuss your requirements. Wedding dates book quickly, often up to a year in advance. Many cake makers limit bookings to allow time to create a multi-tiered cake with intricate decoration and deliver it to your venue on your wedding day, so if your date slot has already been booked, then you may not be able to use the baker you want. At Pretty Amazing Cakes we provide an initial design consultation and tasting, and if you’re a little undecided on the final design, this can be perfected at subsequent meetings as long as your date is saved in the diary. Giving us as much time as possible means that you’ll end up with the cake that you’ve always dreamed of.

And the winner is...

T

he national winners of The Wedding Industry Awards 2016 were announced in January, and we were thrilled to see local company Pudding Bridge pick up the award for Wedding ‘Special Touch’ of the Year. Following on from November’s regional finals, the event saw all of the winners from around England come together to see who would walk away with the coveted titles. 25 awards were up for grabs, rewarding everyone from designers and retailers to stylists, florists, planners and entertainers. With the UK wedding industry being worth an estimated £10billion annually and hundreds of suppliers in competition with each other, to be crowned national champion in no mean feat. Companies had to not only catch the judge’s eyes but also receive first-class feedback from their recent clients. Pudding Bridge supplies sequinned table linen and decorative details, some of which can be seen in the photoshoot for our winter 2015 issue. “Winning at The Wedding Industry Awards is simply amazing! I am incredibly passionate about this industry and derive so much pleasure from helping couples throughout the UK create truly spectacular weddings,” says Helen Hopkins, who runs the company. “My sequin table linen and decorative details really do add that wow factor that so many couples are looking for!” As well as Pudding Bridge, Somersetbased company Abbas Marquees also took home the national award for Wedding Marquee Provider of the Year.

Colour your world

If you’re looking for an unusual way to display your wedding photos, head to the newly-launched Colourstory. This platform and app allows people to turn their photos into engaging and highly personalised art prints and home accessories. Colourstory was founded and created by Arthur Buxton, an artist previously known for his playful prints that transform paintings into pie charts. “Colourstory bridges the digital and physical worlds, encoding your memories into a one-of-akind sequence of colours,” explains Arthur. All you need to do is upload your chosen images directly from your mobile or laptop or via the handy Facebook and Instagram integration. Colourstory will automatically extract the main colours from each photo and represent them proportionally, then reassemble the resulting colours into chronological order. You can then name your Colourstory, and turn it into a fine art print, lampshade, clock, mug, postcard or phone case. Prices range from £20 for an A3 unframed print to £65 for a large lampshade. The process of making a Colourstory is fun, and each one is completely personal – just like your wedding! COLOURSTORY W: WWW.COLOURSTORYAPP.COM

REAL WEDDINGS

A

fter a proposal in the grounds of Downton Abbey itself (aka Highclere Castle), it was natural for Charlotte and Elliot to plan an Art Deco-themed wedding. For this, they turned to Coombe Lodge in Blagdon, a 1920s building with a wealth of period detailing. “This venue is able to embrace that era perfectly, plus it has an excellent reputation for food and service – and it didn’t disappoint!” says Charlotte. “We’d also decided on a November wedding, so the sumptuous and homely surroundings of Coombe Lodge suited the season. The grounds are equally fantastic, but the interior, with its wood panelling, large fireplaces and 1920s details, suited our theme perfectly and meant that should the weather be against us, we had a lovely venue inside.” Charlotte continued the vintage glamour theme with her stunning Sottero and Midgley crystal and bead-encrusted dress, from Allison Jayne, which she accompanied with a faux fur stole. “As soon as I put it on I knew it was the one!” Elliot paired traditional tails with a modern cut in a Ted Baker suit from Moss Bros. Ella Hawkey from Atelier in Clifton used the style of the dress to create a vintage-inspired updo, while Grace Kingsley provided make-up services. “She was amazing, and made me feel comfortable from the first time we met. I loved my make-up on the day," enthuses Charlotte. Charlotte’s dad passed away a few years before, so it was important for her to make his memory part of the day. “To do this, we had a lantern candle burning for him, and he was mentioned in the speeches,” explains Charlotte.

Weddings WEST

Spring 2016_Real Weddings.indd 19

Other family-related touches included Elliot’s wedding ring being made using rose gold from his grandfather’s ring and Charlotte’s with gold from her grandmother’s wedding ring. Charlotte’s sister and best friend were her bridesmaids, with Elliot having his two best friends from university as best men, which turned out to be a handy decision on the morning of the wedding. “The gods of SWALEC were against me as we had a power cut while I was at my best man’s house getting ready – and we later found out his house was the only one in the entire street affected,” says Elliot. “This meant it was quite tricky to give the shirt a once-over with the iron and have a hot shower, not to mention make a nice cup of tea! Needless to say, I had the lucky situation of being able to drive across the city to visit my second best man to carry on getting ready and have a shower. This was definitely a plus of having two best men!” The path of wedding planning didn’t always run smoothly, as even though it was done in just over a year, the couple had a few other big events happening at the same time. “We did complicate things for ourselves as we moved house, city and started new jobs the month prior to the big day!” explains Charlotte. “Luckily our family helped us with different aspects, but there were definitely pinch points along the way.” Despite the complications, the day went very smoothly – apart from one slightly cringeworthy moment when the DJ put the wrong song on for the first dance, but the couple took this in their stride. “Everyone tells you that things will happen on the day that are out of your control but it won’t

matter because you will be so happy – and this was completely true. We just laughed and carried on,” says Charlotte. Elliot sums up the day via a range of emotions. “There was stress due to the power cut in the morning, relief of getting the venue on time, relaxation when meeting the guests, followed by nerves and anxiety, complete fear and then love! It was a completely amazing day that went too fast!” Charlotte agrees. “It was the absolute best day of my life. Nothing else mattered, just us.”

he path of true proposals sometimes doesn’t run smoothly, and this was certainly the case for Rob. After deciding to propose to Katelyn during a holiday to Florida, and not really wanting an audience, he headed to the hotel’s private beach which was usually quite empty. “I took her down to walk along the beach when she pointed out that there was a man sunbathing. Panicking slightly, I dragged her back up and around the corner to the next part of the beach which was occupied only by the ducks. I got down on one knee to ask her the question, but just as she was about to answer, a boat taxi full of rowdy Americans went past, all shouting and clapping with the horn being honked… not what I had planned for a private proposal! Cue the foot traffic going past taking photos and chatter back at the hotel about the ‘proposal on the beach’.” This didn’t stop Katelyn from saying yes, however, and the couple set about planning their Bristol wedding. As Katelyn wanted something different, and Rob wanted something fun where people had lots to do, choosing Bristol Zoo for both the ceremony and reception was the obvious choice, as guests also got access to the zoo. “After viewing it and seeing the leopard print carpet, there was no way Katelyn was changing her mind!” says Rob. This venue also gave Rob something he hadn’t thought he initially wanted. “A picture of me in a morning coat running away from a giant tarantula wasn’t originally on the list, but I still got it!” The food at the zoo, by Levy Restaurants, was also a highlight. “We were spoilt for choice at the food tasting as it was all so good. The service was fab too. There were some dietary requirements

Weddings WEST

Spring 2016_Real Weddings.indd 21

we weren’t aware of that we told them about just before the wedding breakfast and they just sorted it, no fuss, no problems! They made our day run smoothly.” The couple made a lot of the details for the day themselves, such as the seating plan and invitations. “This did become a bit of a chore as we’d based them on the children’s book ‘Dear Zoo’ with flaps and all! They looked lush though.” Talented Katelyn also taught herself to make icing flowers so she could craft the couple’s cake. “On the morning of the wedding, my hairdresser asked why there was a bag of icing sugar in the hotel room – I explained I’d only just finished putting the iced flowers on the cake and ran it over to the zoo in my pyjamas!” The wind and the rain the night before the wedding wasn’t the best omen for a a day at the zoo, and the couple had prepared themselves with multicoloured umbrellas, but while it poured on the morning of the wedding, luckily the rain held off for the actual event. “I had a very muddy dress at the bottom but I was getting married in a zoo – I didn’t expect it to stay clean,” explains Katelyn. Martin Dabek Photography was on hand to record the day. “Martin did an absolutely stunning job and was so relaxed as well. He blended in well, which gave us lovely natural shots, and he got some brilliant posed shots with his eye for an arty picture. He even listened to our silly ideas, such as pretending to run away from the giant tarantula!” The party carried on into the early morning, which did take its toll on some guests. “There was one case of sickness, one case of sleeping head down on the table and many cases of

drunken photo booth pictures and dancing,” says Katelyn. “Two people also ended up in hospital over the next couple of days due to dance related injuries!” The day was even better than the couple had imagined. “There are so many highlights, but having our wedding photos taken feeding the lorikeets and when the sea lion came to say hello was definitely one,” states Katelyn. “I bet Rob says his highlight was getting a signed congratulations photo from Michael Bolton as a wedding present.” Katelyn clearly knows her new husband well, as Rob says: “I think one of the best parts of the day was when the zoo closed to the public, and we went out for more photos. I also loved getting a signed congratulations photo from Michael Bolton, obviously!” The laughter was the thing the couple remembers most of all, which is a great memento for any wedding. “It was such a happy day for us. We’d do it again tomorrow… without the invitation making!”

hen it came to proposing after over four years together, David knew Jade wouldn’t want their engagement to be done in public, so he took the initiative of planning an intimate engagement at his parent’s house, surrounded by their loved ones. “Dave and his nan secretly spent weeks planning the ring and bought a beautiful white gold ring with a Morganite stone and a diamond set either side,” explains Jade. “I was totally shocked and surprised!” Three years later, the couple got married in January 2015 at Tortworth Court Four Pillars Hotel in South Gloucestershire. Surrounded by beautiful English countryside and clear lakes, the venue was a stunning backdrop for their wedding day. “The moment we drove up the drive to go and have a look at the venue it took our breath away, and we knew it was the right place to get married,” says Jade. Keeping the wedding personal was very important for both Jade and David, who were keen for a day that could involve their friends and family. Jade had six bridesmaids and Dave four groomsmen, and loved ones also helped out with supplying details for the day, with

Weddings WEST

Spring 2016_Real Weddings.indd 23

Jade’s aunt making her white rose bouquet and one of her best friends creating the delicious wedding cake. Jade planned the whole day by herself as she is very organised but admits, “I most definitely won’t be leaving my day job to become a wedding planner!” There were some (nice) surprises for the bride, however, with her father-in-law secretly organising a Rolls Royce Phantom to take her to the wedding ceremony. “That was a highlight of my day!” she enthuses. Reward Photographics and Capture and Cut videographers were on hand to capture the details of the day, and the couple were grateful to both of these suppliers for being so relaxed. Jade and Dave also loved the service they got from Tortworth Court staff. “They were fantastic from start to finish, and we didn’t have to worry about anything.” As the couple had been together for seven and a half years when they married, they already felt accepted into one another’s families, but Jade loved how both families mentioned that it felt as if they had gained a family member. “Marrying Dave was the best part of my day. I just couldn’t wait to become Mrs Sharpe and

really that was all that mattered. I’m so happy to be his wife,” she explains. Admitting to feeling overwhelmed by all of the effort everyone had made for the happy couple, Dave adds: “It was the best day of my life. Jade looked beautiful and I knew I was a very lucky man!” And after their winter wedding, the couple then warmed up with a romantic honeymoon in Dubai.

espite neither Emily nor Tom being a fan of Valentine’s Day, it was on this most romantic date that he popped the question with a white gold and diamond solitaire ring, in a 5 star hotel in Bath. Then, just over a year later, the couple’s springtime wedding was held in March at The Battleaxes in Wraxall, a beautiful period pub in the countryside. “It was near to where we live in Portishead, it had a different feel and we love the food there,” explains Emily. “Tom’s parents were pub landlords, too, so it felt quite fitting to marry in a pub.” And, appropriately enough since the venue is owned by The Flatcappers company, Emily and Tom’s page boys and nephews wore grey flat caps. “In most cases they were a few sizes too big and lasted about 10 seconds but looked super cute!” As Emily works in the wedding industry as a make-up artist, her contacts book was luckily already full of great suppliers! “I didn’t think twice about choosing my florist, Rachel from The Rose Shed. I met her a couple of years ago at a networking event and fell in love with her floristry style straight away. And picking Neil Pollock to do our photography was the easiest wedding decision we made. I know Neil from the TV work we do together and after he shot my sisters and a few friends’ weddings, I knew there was no one else we would want to do it. His laidback style meant you barely knew he was there and the results are absolutely breathtaking.” In fact, Tom’s favourite part of the day was disappearing for half an hour with the photographer to have some photographs taken of just the two of them. Stacey Jade was in charge of hair, doing both Emily’s and the bridesmaids’. “One even left it in

Weddings WEST

Spring 2016_Real Weddings.indd 25

for three days as she loved it that much!” When it came to the make-up however, Emily revisited her job. “The wedding morning atmosphere is my comfort zone and so I insisted on doing my own make-up and my mum’s. I also helped the bridesmaids with theirs by giving them step-bystep tutorials into how to apply it. It made the morning even more special and I don’t regret that decision at all.” Emily’s gorgeous gown was a bespoke design by Gemma Worringham at Beau Biens, who took the capped sleeves and back from Emily’s mum’s 1980s wedding dress and modelled the rest of the dress around this. “It was everything I had hoped it would be, and more. Gemma was just so calm and I totally trusted her.” Emily then accessorised her gown with a hair vine and earrings from Bridezillas. “This was my obvious choice to go for my accessories. The girls in Bridezillas just give you the loveliest experience.” The Battleaxes was expertly styled by Kirsten Butler from The Little Wedding Helper with flowers that perfectly reflected the time of year. “As my dress was caramel coloured, strong yellows wouldn’t have worked so Rachel found a peachtoned daffodil that really did. The venue looked stunning with pops of yellow through out to lift it, just a really happy colour!” LightHaus Events’ light-up BAR letters were also on show, and were a surprise for Tom from Emily. Emily’s day job is as a production manager so organising the wedding came naturally to her. “I definitely steered the ship with lists, spreadsheets and a bit of delegation,” she explains. Family and friends all helped, with items such as the cake, a pub quiz during the reception, and thoughtful

details such as table numbers that were the happy couple at various ages, a caricature of Emily and Tom for the beer mats and wine bottle labels. Emily’s grandmother also played a starring role. “While we signed the register my gran played the clarinet. This was quite emotional for me and I was so glad I asked her.” The day went without a hitch. “It was everything we wanted it to be and more,” enthuses Emily. “All the elements we had worked so hard on became the talking points and memories. It was perfect!”

f she hadn’t already known, Liam proved his love to Sarah by marrying her on the same day as Bristol City’s last match of the season. The couple first got together in secondary school at just 11 years old, and then, after losing touch, they bumped into each other years later. As if by fate, Sarah saw Liam getting off of a coach after watching a Bristol City match, and it didn’t take long for the two of them to reconnect romantically. The couple wed on an April day at Manor House Golf Club in Castle Combe, a gorgeous venue that’s surrounded by acres of parkland, woodland and lakes. “We loved the beautiful grounds,” says Sarah, a setting that made it a perfect springtime place to say I do! Sarah admits she did leave a lot of the planning to the last minute, but with the help of family and friends, especially bridesmaid Sophie and friends Keely and Mel, the day went ahead smoothly. “I just wanted a fun wedding day that everyone would remember,” explains Sarah. Keeping things bright on their special day, the groom wore a navy plaid suit paired with

Weddings WEST

a pink tie, while the bride was resplendent in a traditional high neck lace dress from The Bridal Room. The look was completed with an eye-catching flower-bedecked umbrella, which was especially made for Sarah by her other bridesmaid, Claire. Despite the spring morning starting with rain showers (for which that gorgeous umbrella came in handy!), the skies soon cleared up and the guests had a splendid day. The wedding details were captured by First Avenue Photography and Derek’s Video Productions, with Chic to Unique providing venue dressing services. The beautiful blooms were courtesy of The Rose Shed, and the couple were transported in one of De Gournay’s classic cars. For both Liam and Sarah the day couldn’t have been more perfect. “The highlight of my evening was our first dance,” reminisces Sarah. “We started off with a slow dance to Coldplay’s 'Yellow', which then changed into 'Chacarron Macarron' and got all our guests up dancing! And even though things were last minute, we couldn’t have asked for a more fantastic day.”

If you love a romantic silhouette, then ruffled and lace-edged styles such as these by Justin Alexander and Ellis Bridals are your go-to look. For a more sculptured effect, layers of sleek fabric as on the People Tree dress will be ideal. Tiered skirts also work well on a mermaid style dress, when they flare dramatically from the knees to create a look that just oozes sophistication.

The art of style From her studio in the beautiful Welsh countryside, British designer Vicky Rowe creates her gorgeous gowns. Nouveau, her new collection for 2016, mixes 1970s silhouettes with Art Nouveau-inspired beadwork, creating heirloom gowns that hark back to glamorous times. Starting out as a milliner and dress maker in Bristol (in fact, Editor Helen wore one of her headpieces for her wedding in 2010!), Vicky branched out into bridal wear in 2012. “I’m always referring to beautiful gowns of the past but equally I’m besotted by current haute couture,” enthuses Vicky. “These are passions of mine, so I just look all the time. I also reference personal interests such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture, as well as my travels.” When you wear one of Vicky’s beautiful gowns, you can also be safe in the knowledge that it’s been made in an ethical manner. Using fair trade products for her dresses is very important to her, and Vicky works with a small team of craftsmen in India and personally sources her materials from independent businesses. She also makes a donation to charity PLAN UK for each dress sold. Prices for wedding gowns range from £2,200 to £4,900. Vicky is also just about to launch a brand new bridesmaid line of hand-dyed and customisable dresses that start at £220, which could also work well as wedding dresses for budget-savvy brides. Go with tradition and organise a thoughtful honeymoon for you and your bride

Ensure the style of your wedding transport fits in with the theme of your day

Countdown to success Follow Sharaye Stanberry‘s ultimate groom to-do list and you’ll be guaranteed to have a day to remember for all of the right reasons

A

s much as brides can have tendencies to take over when it comes to wedding planning, there are just some jobs you grooms can’t escape, and a little organisaton in the run up goes a long way. Follow this handy to-do list, and you’ll arrive at your wedding day stress-free and without any last minute niggling thoughts of “was I supposed to do that?” running through your head!

1

CHOOSE YOUR GROOMSMEN

When choosing your best man be sure to choose someone you know will be up to all of the role’s responsibilities and who will be guaranteed to plan an unforgettable stag do. For the rest of your groomsmen, sort this at the beginning of the wedding planning process to eliminate any awkward ‘am I or aren’t I?’ questions between you and family members or friends. 42

2

PLAN YOUR HONEYMOON

It’s tradition that the groom organises the honeymoon, so if your bride is willing to hand over responsibility, this can be a great – and fun – detail for you to focus on, as well as showing your partner just how organised you are. Maybe you and your bride have already planned where your next holiday will be, or perhaps it’s time for you try and remember that really small remote island she mentioned when you first met. A budget is crucial when planning the honeymoon, so discuss figures with your bride before booking anything.

3

GO SUIT SHOPPING

It’s important when planning your wedding day attire that you feel comfortable and your look ties in with the style of the day. Get a list of wedding colours and look at a range of suit styles. Are you having a traditionally sophisticated day or a laidback beach wedding? Once you decided

the look you are going for, take your best men out to get suited and booted. Be sure to liaise with groomsmen about whether you are renting or buying suits.

4

TRANSPORT

Choosing the perfect form of transport for your big day is a must. Not only do you need to provide transport for you and your bride-to-be, but both your armies of groomsmen and bridesmaids too. It’s crucial your transport fits in with the theme or style of your day. Is your bride a limo lover or a campervan chick?

5

WRITE AND PRACTISE YOUR SPEECH

Writing your speech can be nervewracking but leaving it to the last minute can be even more so. To ensure you have time to perfect it and memorise as much as you can, make sure you do it in advance and not just after the ceremony on the back of a wedding card envelope. Look up groom’s speech guides online if you’re strugglgin to get your ideas onto paper. Helpful pointers to include can be how you and your partner met, why you fell in love with her, a thank you to those who helped

GROOMS

plan your day and to your guests for being there, and a thank you to your bridal party. Remember to keep your speech no more than 5-8 minutes, as any longer than this means guests’ attention will wander.

6

PLAN YOUR STAG DO

Although the best man and groomsmen are typically in charge of planning the stag do, it’s always best to set boundaries and discuss what you want from the night. You don’t want hopes for a quiet night at your local pub to be transformed into a Vegas weekender or vice versa. If you are having an extravagant stag do, discuss a budget with the attendees to make sure there are no nasty financial surprises for anyone.

7

SURPRISE YOUR BRIDE It has become an unwritten tradition for the groom to do something extra

Weddings WEST

Spring 2016_Grooms.indd 43

special for his bride on their big day. Remind her how much you love her by buying her a piece of jewellery to wear on the day, have flowers and Champagne delivered to where she’s getting ready, write her a love letter or make a scrapbook filled with romantic memories.

8

PLAN SOMETHING SPECIAL

Just when your bride thinks she has planned everything to a T, there you go and make her day even more amazing. A cute way to surprise your bride and guests is to plan something unexpected and fun. This can be anything from extravagant plans such as getting your bride’s favourite band to play or organising a fireworks show at the end of the evening, to more intimate things such as making a slideshow of photo memories to play during the speeches.

9

BE A HELPER Sharing responsibilities will make the planning and day more enjoyable for both of you. As much as you have been trying to avoid the seating list or sourcing candles in just the right shade of blue for the tables, it may help your bride a lot to assist her with the small details.

10

RELAX

It is no secret how stressful planning a wedding can be, so be sure to take time out with your partner from the organising. A spa day, regular date nights or just simply watching a film on the sofa with a bottle of wine can help the two of you clear your minds for a while. After all, your wedding is about the two of you and should filled with laughter and joy, so the planning should also reflect this. 43

e spent a beautifully sunny day at Ston Easton Park, exploring the luxurious mansion and hidden spots within the grounds with our models Holly and Martin. Their ‘love story’ had a happy ending thanks to our team of fantastic suppliers, who brought a riot of spring colour to this pretty venue.

THE VENUE

This magnificent Palladian mansion in Somerset is like the setting of a Jane Austen novel, with a picture-perfect photo setting around every corner. The house has undergone a series of transformations over the years and it now holds a proud place among the list of top West Country hotels and wedding venues. With 36 acres of landscaped parkland and centuries-old wrought iron gates at the entrance, Ston Easton’s rich history and original features bring back to life bygone eras of wealth and opulence, when romance prevailed. The house has many hidden treasures, including a library with original mahogany bookcases, a beautiful stone staircase and an Edwardian kitchen. As a wedding venue, Ston Easton offers six registered ceremony rooms, each with unique architectural details and décor, and ranging in capacity from 12-100 guests. One of the most requested for weddings is the Saloon – the largest of the rooms, featuring an ornate high ceiling, open fire place and spectacular views across the grounds at the rear of the house. When it comes to food, the hotel’s awardwinning Sorrel Restaurant offers a selection of set menus and bespoke dining options to choose from. And to make your wedding guests feel welcome, there are 20 luxurious rooms with antique furnishings and works of art combined with contemporary touches, so they can relax in style after your big day. 50

Spring 2016_Shoot.indd 50

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Worthy winner of the Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards photographer of the year for 2015, Interlace Photography was an obvious choice for our spring editorial. Camera ready, Eleanor Cashman knew how to find the most romantic corners of the estate and zoom in on those features that bring the venue to life. From recording the preparation stages and the delicate details on the gowns and accessories to the bride and groom’s intimate shots as a couple, Eleanor moved seamlessly in the background to produce the perfect shots. As Interlace Photography reaches its 10 year mark in 2016, Eleanor feels proud of her work with couples across the South West. “There is no better feeling than creating beautiful pictures and knowing that my images are fleeting moments in your story that become treasured memories.” Her passion comes across in every photo. “I love my job, as I get to capture one of the happiest days of a person’s life. What could be better than that?”

THE BRIDE’S OUTFITS

All the dresses that Holly modelled were by Spanish bridal label Pronovias, renowned for creating sophisticated wedding dresses. Locally, you can find them at Luxquisite Bridal Couture in Bath and, as Holly works there, she was able to have her pick of dream dresses! Amanda Davis-Harrison from Bridezillas in Bristol was in charge of the accessories to finalise each look. A well established bridal boutique in the heart of Bath, Luxquisite offers an exclusive yet relaxed atmosphere for brides in search of their dream dress. Since its launch in September 2014, the team, led by Luisa Fisher, has made many brides feel confident and welcomed by offering them tailored guidance. Stepping into the shop, you’re

surrounded by rails of handpicked dresses from internationally acclaimed labels such as Cymbeline Paris, Pronovias and Ellie Saab. To match the perfect dress, Bridezillas is the place to find accessories to sparkle and shine on your big day. The boutique is the epitome of jewellery decadence, heavenly headdresses and vintage-inspired pieces. Made of freshwater pearls, crystals and diamantes, the accessories are handmade and unique. Our bride looked every inch a modern day princess as she slipped into the first dress, Presta. This charming satin and tulle gown had a draped bodice with straps, a V-neck both at the front and back, and full tulle skirt. To complete the look, Holly wore a birdcage veil with the ‘Lady Marigold’ headband by Abigail Grace Designs, a ‘Demelza’ crystal and pearl bracelet and vintage-style crystal and pearl drop earrings. The second gown was Plaza, a Mikado princess dress from the Pronovias 2016 collection. What made this satin design really spectacular was the combination of elegant feminine features – a draped sash and bodice with deep V-neck and plunging back, and a long train skirt with delicate buttons. It was beautifully accessorised with a pair of Rita lace heels by Perfect Vintage shoes, a ‘Venice’ gold hair vine by Abigail Grace Designs, a ‘Prim’ crystal and freshwater pearl bracelet by Blossom and ‘Adora’ earrings by Athena Crystal Couture. The final gown was Vera from Pronovias Atelier and was Holly’s favourite – an ivory flared silk style with nude details, featuring a short sleeve bodice with an open V-back, 54

French lace overlay and a flared skirt in silk gauze. A narrow lace belt, combined with ‘Sadie’ earrings by Crystal Valley London and ‘Amber Gold’ bracelet and ‘Maple’ gold hair vine, both by Abigail Grace Designs, added the bridal wow factor.

THE GROOM’S OUTFITS

Anne Harding in Bristol is a leading name in menswear and suit hire for weddings, so we couldn’t think of a better supplier to help us with our groom Martin’s attire for the shoot. Offering a selection of suits – from traditional Prince Edward and tail coats to dinner suits and lounge jackets – and a wide range of smart shirts and colourful cravats, Anne Harding will help grooms look their best for their ceremony. The team takes great pride in providing the very best service to each and every customer. The first outfit for our groom was a charcoal grey, lightweight mohair suit with matching trousers from the Claverley range – perfect for spring weddings. This fitted design, which Martin absolutely loved, was paired with vibrant cravats for a modern look. Martin then changed into a silver grey lounge suit made from the same lightweight fabric. Both outfits also come with matching waistcoats that grooms can hire for their special day.

THE MAKE-UP

Getting our bride camera-ready was easy with the help of make-up artist Kathryn from Powder & Paint. To give Holly’s skin a flawless finish, Kathryn used Christian Dior foundation in Diorskin Forever. “The great thing about

this product is that it blends seamlessly with the skin for a smoother, more even complexion and contains SPF 25 – perfect for spring and summer weddings,” explains Kathryn. Kathryn then contoured Holly’s skin with a soft bronzer, Hoola by Benefit, and highlighted her cheekbones with Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Pink Quartz, to create a gorgeous glow. To define Holly’s eyes, Kathryn used iridescent shades of gold, bronze and brown eyeshadows from MAC, metallic dark brown eyeliner and lots of black waterproof mascara. A set of Revlon false lashes completed the soft, smoky look. Finally, to add a pop of colour, she applied a pink lipstick from Clinique’s Buttershine range in Fresh Watermelon and as a second colour later on, a slick of MAC coral lipstick in Crosswires. Having worked with hundreds of brides during her career, Kathryn absolutely loves her job. “Every face is unique, so each bride is different. Revealing women’s inner beauty is what make-up should do. My favourite part is that warm, fuzzy feeling that I get when I make a bride feel amazing and the best that she has ever looked.”

THE HAIR

Also on hand to complete the bridal look was professional hair stylist Stacey from Stacey Jade Hair. In just six years since setting up her business, Stacey has been recognised both locally and nationally, including wins at the Bristol and Somerset Weddings Awards in 2014 and 2015, finalist at the Wedding Industry Awards in 2016 and winner in the bridal category at the National Hairdressers’

Federation competition last year. For the first look, Stacey wanted to create a romantic soft look, so she curled Holly’s hair and pinned the curls to allow them to cool. They were then brushed through to create a relaxed wave and pinned back to one side, showing off Holly's hair accessory. The second style was an updo that complemented the details of the dress. Using the curls created for the first style, Stacey twisted the hair in sections across the back of the head and pinned them in place. She also created a soft sweeping fringe to frame Holly's face along with the hair vine across the front.

THE FLOWERS

A bright and beautiful bouquet is the finishing piece to any bride’s wedding day look. Crafted by Becci Hobbs of Bijoux Floral Design, Holly’s two spring garden bouquets featured

Weddings WEST

Spring 2016_Shoot.indd 57

a selection of seasonal blooms, including chaenomeles superba, delphinium, orange ranunculus and Mimi Eden spray roses. A piece of muslin and natural weave hessian with trailing tails tied it together. Becci created one in a more traditional hand-tied style, and a second with an asymmetrical shape, a style that’s a top trend for 2016. Martin also had two matching buttonholes. Becci styled the top table using a white wooden crate filled with spring blooms alongside small flower jars and tea lights, which were also used on the ceremony table. Napkins tied with small clusters of flowers marked each place with style. As Becci loves using seasonal flowers wherever possible, these arrangements were right up her street! Becci’s talent and passion for wedding floral arrangements earned her the Best Wedding Florist award in 2015 at the Bristol

and Somerset Wedding Awards. “I pride myself on being able to turn couples’ dreams into reality, with a personalised service from the initial enquiry right through to the wedding day,” she enthuses.

THE CAKE

Making a beautiful focal point was a traditional tiered cake tower from Pretty Amazing Cakes. The home-based bakery is run by Anne Gliddon, winner of Wedding Cake Designer title at the Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards 2015. “I was delighted to win this award based on the votes and wonderful reviews from my wedding couples. It was a very proud moment and a fantastic personal achievement,” says Anne. Taking inspiration from blossoming cherry trees that herald the beginning of spring, Anne's three-tier cake design featured a 57

THE STATIONERY

The pretty handmade wedding stationery from Topikki was the ideal match for the colours of the top table flowers. Bright spring shades of orange and yellow stood against a soft pastel background, while blue ribbon and die-cut flowers added a rustic twist to the design. “What’s great about this design is that it’s open to interpretation and can be changed quite dramatically by using different colours, tones and textures to match a couple’s setting, season or wedding theme,” says Gaynor Page, the founder of Topikki. Gaynor has a fashion degree and many years’ experience in designing and handcrafting wedding stationery, favours and accessories. Her services include an elegant design portfolio that couples can choose from as well as a completely bespoke service.

THE CARS

A special day meant that the cars on offer had to be extra-special too, so we called on AJE Classics’ 1960s Jaguars in pale blue and green. When brides describe their journey to the ceremony in one of these stylish cars, 60

Spring 2016_Shoot.indd 60

they often say “I just wanted something a bit different,” and this is definitely what they get with AJE Classics! Turning a 30 year passion for cars into a successful business, Andrew and Emma offer chauffeur-driven services for weddings and other special events in their beautifully restored Mark II Jaguars, whose gleaming metallic shades create the perfect backdrop for a white dress.

THE MODELS

Although her day job at Luxquisite involves selling wedding dresses, Holly works as a model in her spare time and our photoshoot was an exciting opportunity to actually try some dresses on and feel like a real bride. “It was a bit strange at first, but it came naturally to me. I’m always helping brides to find their perfect dress so it was a great experience to be the bride for the day,” shares Holly. “The hair and make-up artists were extremely talented! I loved the looks they gave me for the day. It was so much fun pretending I was getting married and everyone was so helpful, it actually felt like my wedding day.” Martin Little mixes a marketing course at UWE with a new career as a model at Gingersnap Models. “Shoots such as this are especially fun thanks to the incredible location and amazing team,” enthuses Martin. “Being a groom for the first time was great fun and felt so real – all that we were missing was a priest and a few friends and family!”

Let me entertain you!

With wedding entertainment getting ever more creative, Gianina Turner highlights the best ways to up the fun factor for your guests

W

e know that weddings are about the bride and groom making a commitment to each other in front of their family and friends. But keeping your guests happy throughout the day also means thinking creatively about your choice of activities and games, which can vary depending on the venue and season of your nuptials. It's always a good idea to consider scattering a few treats and surprises, which are suitable for all ages, into the running order of the reception. The good news is entertaining your guests just got easier, thanks to a new wave of unique and talented suppliers. From unique art pieces and temporary tattoos to cocktail lollies and tasty popcorn, the possibilities are endless! All you now have to do is decide what sounds most fun...

BESPOKE BRIDAL PAINTINGS

Imagine being able to have a beautiful piece of art as a reminder of your day. Now you can, with award-winning artist Charlotte Atkinson, who uses watercolours to offer bespoke services including live wedding paintings, portraits of the bride and groom and illustrations of your wedding dress. She can come to your wedding and paint the day as it unfolds, so guests can see her progress and then admire the finished painting at the evening 64

reception. Dona B Drawings also offers a personalised picture service, by creating an architectural illustration of your wedding venue. The stunning hand-drawn portraits make for treasured keepsakes, which you can display in your home or give away as presents to your families and friends.

Dona B’s personalised portraits offer a unique memento of your wedding

PARODY PORTRAITS

For a more humorous approach to your wedding art portraits, invite a caricaturist such as Ian Lloyd, a Bristol-based artist who sketches guests’ portraits. Producing around 15 individual portraits per hour, Ian’s art pieces are a great way to break the ice and give everyone a unique keepsake of the day.

TATTOO LOVE

Appealing to younger and older guests alike, temporary tattoo booths are the new thing for weddings! Just set up a DIY popup tattoo parlour stocked with fun and colourful designs and you’ll soon see your guests queuing up to get inked with quirky messages or pretty pictures. Doris Loves can bring a tattooist to your wedding, or send the service to you with its ‘tattoo station in a box’.

With suppliers such as The Digital Studio Booth, setting up a video booth is easy and it means your guests can visit it at any time during the event. The result will be a collection of personal recorded wedding ‘speeches’ you can treasure forever.

Making an unusual focal point, the luge is sure to get guests in the mood for dancing.

From sweet to salty and everything in between, popcorn is perfect for soaking up the Champagne. Whether you’re having a full on movie-themed celebration or simply enjoy this crunchy little snack, why not set up your own popcorn bar for an affordable price? There’s a wealth of flavours to choose from these days and everyone is bound to like tucking in, especially after a few drinks!

our wedding day should be the only day in your life when it should be all about you (and your partner, of course!). You will want to be admired and remembered, as all brides and grooms should be, and flowers can be a great way for your wedding to be remembered by both yourself and your guests. As an experienced wedding florist, the most frequent statement I hear from a potential new bride is “I want to be different!” It's very few who actually allow themselves to be, however, and many end up opting for the traditional types of wedding flowers that they think they ‛ought’ to have. Don’t get me wrong, there are many many amazing flowers that fall into this category – roses, for example, which we turn all the time into beautiful bridal bouquets. But there are so many unusual and fantastic alternatives out there that my advice to you is to get carried away! Trust your florist to offer alternatives – after all, you’re paying for an expert service and we love it when we get full creative rein! Succulents are an amazing option as they come in so many colours, from deepest reds and blush pinks to greys, silvers and vibrant lime greens. While these have become very popular for house plants in recent years, they are still pretty rare when seen in bridal bouquets, and so you’d definitely stand out with these on your arm! I love using these

Weddings WEST

Spring 2016_Beinspired.indd 67

pretty plants and have recently created some stunning bouquets with them. Including herbs in your arrangements is also a lovely idea. There are lots of colours and textures on offer, and not only do they look beautiful, but they're also wonderfully fragrant. They’re symbolic, too – during the Victorian era, brides used to include herbs in their bouquets as each had a special meaning, such as rosemary for remembrance, lavender for luck and thyme for courage. The sense of smell is so evocative as well, so in years to come, when you catch the scent of a herb that you used for your wedding, you’ll instantly be transported back to your special day! Pinterest is a wonderful source of ideas, so have a look at bouquets and arrangements there and take these images along to your florist to show them the type of thing you had in mind. And luckily, being different with your flowers doesn’t equate to being more expensive. Usually the more popular something is then the more expensive it becomes, so using something

a little different can be also more cost effective! Take advantage of the knowledge your florist has, ask for alternatives, think outside the box a little, be open to suggestions and enjoy being different – after all, what have you got to lose! Say it with love We chat to wordsmith Joanna Miller from Bespoke Verse about how poetry and readings can bring a special touch to your wedding

S

ince setting up Bespoke Verse after her own wedding 17 years ago, Joanna Miller's company has gone from strength to strength. It offers personalised poetry for special events, plus a range of poetry-themed gifts that are suitable for weddings and other celebrations. Joanna took time away from her rhyming dictionary to tell us more about the business, what she can offer couples and why you shouldn’t neglect the words when you're planning your nuptials.

WHAT GAVE YOU THE IDEA TO START BESPOKE VERSE? I used to be a teacher, so I was used to standing up and talking. I was determined to make a speech at my own wedding, being a bit of a feminist, and I enjoyed teaching funny poetry – the accessible, rhyming sort you see in Roald Dahl’s books in particular – so I wrote something funny and unique. My rhyming speech was written as if it was the groom’s diary and it brought the house down. Commissions followed and eventually, when I was ready to leave teaching and start a family, I had enough experience to turn my hobby into a thriving business.

WHAT WEDDING PRODUCTS AND SERVICES DO YOU OFFER? We offer a personalised poetry service, 70

where we write a unique speech or wedding reading in rhyme, based on answers to a questionnaire. Our style is witty and warm. We write in rhyme, which our customers find is easier to deliver than an off-the-cuff speech. We’ve written for brides, grooms, best men, bridesmaids, brothers, mothers… you name it! Many couples say it was the highlight of their day, including an actress who mentioned in OK! magazine that our poem was one of the most memorable parts of her wedding. We also sell off-the-shelf prints that have proved very popular as gifts for the wedding party, and our poem notebooks on the themes of friends and marriage are often used as planners for weddings and hen dos.

goes into making weddings unique – so why neglect the words?

WHY DO YOU THINK POETRY CONTINUES TO PLAY SUCH A KEY PART AT WEDDINGS?

I would encourage them to try writing their own readings, or perhaps use someone to help them. It’s so much more personal, and much more interesting for your guests than hearing the same readings time and again! People still remember my wedding speech 17 years later, but they have absolutely no idea what my flowers and cake were like!

I think that people suddenly become more accepting of poetry at important occasions as it’s seen as a good medium for expressing complex emotions in a formal way. Humans have had a tradition of sharing verse since before writing started – stories told around the campfire were easier to remember if they rhymed or were in song. People that proclaim they hated poetry at school suddenly become more interested in it when planning a wedding! I think that so much planning

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE BESPOKE VERSE WEDDING POEM? I love ‘What is a Marriage?’ that features on several of the A4 prints that we sell (pictured above). It’s taken on a life of its own and is being used as a wedding reading all over the world, which is very gratifying. I like the fact it gives a humorous and day-to-day view of marriage as well as a romantic one.

Long distance love Iga Schlegel shares her tips on how to plan a wedding when your partner is 3,000 miles away

M

y husband and I were in a long distance relationship for over five years before we got married. Herb and I met in school in the USA, where we were typical ‘high school sweethearts’. After eight months of dating, however, I had to say my last goodbyes to him as I was starting a new life in England, and we both thought a long distance relationship would be too hard. After two years apart, Herb visited me, and we fell in love all over again. Luckily, technology made things easier, as we were able to communicate non-stop and even see each other through Skype or Facetime. Physically we only saw each other a couple times a year, though, which wasn't easy. Not having him over for dinner, spending holidays together or going on a date night was the hardest thing to get used to. Our relationship was meant to be, though, and Herb proposed to me in the front of the Eiffel Tower. So many emotions went through my head during this most beautiful moment:

Weddings WEST

Spring 2016_Beinspired.indd 73

I was surprised, excited and nervous! I mean, how were we supposed to plan a wedding while he lived overseas? By the time our wedding day rolled around, we had been in a relationship for 2,053 days, but had only spent 315 of those days together. After he proposed he had to go back home and he visited me only twice before the wedding, plus it was hard to get him involved in the planning. So I had to do it, at the same time as finishing up my degree and working at the same time. It was harder than I thought – I have never sent so many emails in my life! I wanted to have my future husband with me more than ever while picking the venue, flowers, cake, photographers, transport and doing the extra ‘fun’ decoration bits. Luckily, I had my mother, who helped a lot and for which I am very thankful. When the day finally arrived I didn’t worry about it being perfect any more, as I knew it was going to be special no matter what happens – it was, after all, the day I married

my best friend. Our family from all over the world came to England to celebrate, to a day that was filled with sunshine and lots of love – even when I accidentally told Herb that I was going to “love and strangle him” rather than “love and strengthen”! What we learned the most through long distance is appreciation. During Herb’s visits, we made sure each hour counted and we appreciated the little things. It also taught us communication, patience, respect, trust and the true meaning of love. You care so much for the person that you’re willing to do anything to see them again. Don't get me wrong – it is hard work, and there will be times when you go through tears, but when you see your loved one again after your separation, you’re the happiest person. A successful long distance relationship is possible and it’s definitely worth it. Now we live together, the past four months have been the best of my life! We’ve been catching up on all the things we were unable to do before. Long distance made us who we are today and our relationship has never been stronger. And now we're finally together, we’re never using Skype or Facetime ever again. 73

Favour of the month

A donation to a charity is a thoughtful favour that will have a lasting impact

If you want to give your guests something more unusual than the traditional sugared almond, Keri Beckingham shares her favourite favour ideas

W

edding favours are the perfect way to say thank you to your guests, and can also be used as a little memento to help them remember your big day for years to come. The best thing is that they can be completely tailored to your personal tastes and the possibilities are almost endless. They don’t have to cost the earth, either, as there are lots of budget-friendly options available. Historically, five sugared almonds, representing fertility, wealth, longevity, health and happiness were given as a gift to guests in a beautifully decorated box. If you’re thinking of choosing something a little bit different than the typical edible tokens such as sweets, chocolates or biscuits, however, here are some more imaginative options that you might like to consider for your special day.

SHOWING YOU CARE

If you’d like to do something for a worthy cause instead of giving an gift, consider making a donation on behalf of your guests. For a £2 donation per guest, Cancer Research UK will provide you with a personalised favour card, which also acts as 74

a place card, as well as a pin badge. To add an extra-special touch, for £2.50 you can have a pin badge by a renowned bridal designer such as Jenny Packham or Suzanne Neville – a stylish way for your guests to remember your celebrations.

TAKE A SHOT

Instead of raising a glass of fizz for the wedding toast, why not give your guests the chance to take a shot of your favourite tipple instead? This is the perfect way to add a touch of personality to your big day, not to mention helping your guests to really get the party started! You can order personalised shot glasses for the big day (Confetti sells them from £1.50 each) and provide your liqueur of choice in a cute miniature bottle. Alternatively, follow wedding blog Something Turquoise’s DIY inspiration and provide your guests with a miniature and mixer in a cute mason glass, complete with a straw. It’s also easy to brew your own delicious aperitif, such as sloe gin, damson vodka or limoncello.

BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS

If you’d like to give a favour with a bit of longevity, provide your guests with some wildflower or herb seeds that they can plant at home. The seeds can be showcased in a number of ways, from a traditional packet to a plantable card. Once the colourful flowers or fragrant herbs have grown, your guests will have a beautiful reminder of your big day. Wild Flower Favours has

If you thought that craft was just for children, think again! If you enjoy sewing, knitting or painting, using your skills is a wonderful way to show your appreciation for your guests attending your wedding celebration – imagine their joy at realising all the time and effort you have gone to in making a special token gift for them. T

ucked away at the end of a winding drive, right in the heart of the pretty village of Ston Easton, lies the romantic venue of Ston Easton Park. Built in 1739 in Palladian style and with grounds that were designed by the renowned landscape architect Humphrey Repton, it’s hard to imagine a more picture-perfect spot for a wedding. The manor house at the venue is warm, welcoming and beautifully decorated with antiques that set off the perfectly-proportioned rooms. After being owned by a number of families throughout its history, including the Rees-Moggs, Ston Easton Park is now run as a hotel with 23 bedrooms. While history buffs will revel in its period detailing, including a basement kitchen straight out of Upstairs Downstairs, pet lovers will rejoice too, as the hotel’s resident labrador Oscar is a favourite with visitors. Out in the grounds you may be lucky enough to come across Kate and Naomi, two of the friendliest and fluffy felines! The grounds are also a photographer’s dream, with everywhere you turn providing you with yet another photo opportunity and backdrop. The food is definitely a highlight at Ston Easton, with the chef using locally sourced

produce in the innovative and delicious menus. In fact, around 60% of the ingredients come from the hotel’s kitchen gardens – you can’t get much more local than that! Delights on the wedding sample menu include red pepper mousse with pickled vegetables, roast monkfish loin with sweet potato fondant and griottine cherry clafoutis with clotted cream, but there’s also plenty of scope for you to work with the chef to create your perfect dishes. There are six licensed ceremony rooms that can cater for 2-100 people, with receptions available for up to 80 people in the house and 150 in an adjacent marquee. The house can be hired in a number of ways, from a simple room for your ceremony and breakfast, to exclusive use of the whole estate. This is worth it solely to get access to the gorgeous gardener’s cottage, a separate suite of rooms tucked away from the main house, next to the beautiful cascading water feature and a stone bridge. What better place to escape to after the excitement of the day and spend your first night as a married couple? There are lots of waterside venues for you to choose from in the South West, from those where your ‘I dos’ will be accompanied by the gentle babbling of a river, to the serene smoothness of a lake making the perfect backdrop to your first photos as a married couple. All you need now is for the other often-seen type of British water to stay away from your big day! LAKESIDE CHARM Manor by the Lake mixes beautiful Victorian architecture with an enviable lakeside location, just outside the Regency city of Cheltenham. There are charming architectural details in bucketloads, making it a history lover’s dream, as well as a private lake set in seven acres of grounds. You have a choice of several spots for a ceremony, including on the edge of the pretty lake, and the venue can cater for intimate celebrations with 10 guests up to larger parties of 300. The twelve bedrooms in this exclusive-use venue also mean that you and your guests can fall straight into bed after a day of partying, with the happy couple enjoying a lavish honeymoon suite with four poster bed. 78

s soon as you enter the beautiful golden gates that mark the entrance to the Bowood estate, you know you’re visiting somewhere very special. Bowood Hotel Spa and Golf Club is set in the stunning 2,000 acre Bowood Estate, home to the Lansdowne family for over 250 years. This boutique venue was built in 2009, and is an amazing complement to the Georgian house and Capability Brown-designed gardens, offering you the complete package to host the wedding of your dreams. Bowood has two licensed rooms for your ceremony, the Fitzmaurice room (up to 50 guests), which is part of the original ‘Home Farm’ farmhouse, and the Kerry Suite (up to 120 guests), which is located in the Clubhouse. The Fitzmaurice room can then be used for an intimate wedding breakfast of up to 24 people, and for larger receptions, the Kerry Suite can be split into three individually sized separate rooms, which can be arranged according to the size of your wedding and which can cater for 200+ guests. You don’t need to worry about other hotel guests inadvertently being a part of your celebration, either, as the Kerry Suite

has its own private bar facilities, as well as a terrace that looks out over to the beautiful grounds, making it the perfect backdrop for a glass or two of Champagne! Castle in the air Recent refurbishments at Gloucestershire’s Clearwell Castle means that this stunning venue now has even more to offer, reports Helen Dorritt

A

fairytale castle is something lots of people dream about as their backdrop for the perfect wedding, and venue don’t come much more Disneyperfect than the beautiful Clearwell Castle in Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean. “We’ve been creating perfect weddings for many years, but are constantly seeking ways to improve and create more and more incredible memories for their couples and guests,” explains wedding co-ordinator Emma. This includes last year’s complete refurbishment of the Cellar Bar, offering a modern and vibrant space to dance the night away. The Ballroom also had a makeover with neutral tones and a majestic gold carpet for the 75ft aisle, making it a beautiful setting for your ceremony and offering seating for up to 150 guests. 82

Spring 2016_Venues.indd 82

The improvements don’t stop here, either: new for 2016 is the refurbishment of the Baynham Suite, a sumptuous family room in the main castle with far reaching views over the Forest of Dean, which is one of fifteen bedrooms available for the night of the wedding. Also new this year is the introduction of a wedding gazebo, allowing couples the option of an outside ceremony in the grounds looking back at the Castle across the lawn. “The Ballroom has always been a popular place to be married, as the leaded windows and raised dias offers a very church-like feel, but now the gazebo offers a picturesque alternative on sunnier days,” explains Emma. And if the weather is looking a little iffy, don’t worry – the Ballroom will always be in place for a glamorous indoor alternative!
