There’s no lack of yard and garden work in the spring, especially following such a brutally cold and snowy winter. If you’re having a hard time prioritizing which job to take on first, here’s a list of ten helpful and important chores for getting the growing season off to a great start. •Now is the time to prune and remove any dead or winter damaged branches on trees and shrubs. Prune dead wood from roses and cut back long canes once leaf buds begin to swell. •Clear beds of debris which can harbor disease. Remove dead leaves and plant material. This will help with air circulation and clear the way for new growth. Push

They are already out there and it is easier to eradicate them when they are small and the soil is moist. •If your lawn is a priority, you can fertilize and apply a pre-emergence herbicide. Timing for application of herbicides is important - if applied too early, crabgrass seeds that germinate late in the season will not be controlled. A good rule of thumb is to apply when forsythia blooms begin to drop, or when redbud trees are in full bloom as crabgrass seed typically germinates after these events. Be sure to carefully read and follow all package instruc-

Ground-level beds can also be dug, but make sure the soil has dried out. •Stake early summer perennials which grow rapidly once temperatures begin to warm up. Divide clumps with a sharp knife, making sure each division has several shoots and roots. Replant immediately and keep well watered throughout the growing season. •Start veggie and annual seeds indoors. Read seed packets carefully for germination times to make sure the plants don’t become “leggy” before being transplanted into the garden.
•Have some fun and plant colorful containers of pansies or violas to brighten up your yard and entry. Pinch back dead blooms to keep the plants vigorous.
•If you didn’t do it last fall, clean and sharpen garden tools and clean pots and containers. Purchase new tools if needed.

National Arbor Day is Friday, April 24, this year, and the Arbor Day Foundation is making it easy for anyone to celebrate the annual tree-planting holiday. Join the Foundation in April and receive 10 free shade trees. By joining the Foundation in April, new members receive the following trees: red oak, sugar maple, weeping willow, baldcypress, thornless honeylocust, pin oak, river birch, tuliptree, silver maple, and red maple.
The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign. “These trees provide shade in the summer and vibrant colors throughout the fall,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Through the simple act of planting trees, one person can make a difference in helping to create a healthier and more beautiful planet for all of us to enjoy.” The trees will be shipped postpaid with enclosed planting instructions at the right

Make your yard wildlife-friendly (StatePoint) Being a good neighbor means more than being friendly to the humans across the street, it also means being friendly to the animals in your yard. Raise your house’s resale value with these improvements (StatePoint) Before you decide on a home improvement project, it’s a good idea to learn which ones will help raise your house’s value and recoup the most money when you decide to sell. From replacing your front door to adding a deck, there are many midrange improvements that won’t cost a bundle but will deliver great bang for your buck. It’s not about spending the most money; it’s about improvements that best hold their value. The experts at “Remodeling” magazine recently released their 28th annual Cost vs. Value Report, comparing construction costs with resale value for 36 of the most popular home improvement projects. When it came to midrange projects, the report found homeowners recouped the highest percentage of costs on these five improvements: steel entry door replacement, installation of manufactured stone veneer on home exteriors, garage door replacements, vinyl siding replacement, and wooden deck additions. “Making your home stand out from others on your block and others on the market is achievable if you plan wisely when it comes to remodeling projects,” says Phil Wengerd, Vice President of Market Strategies at ProVia, a leading building products manufacturer. “This year’s statistics indicate that moderately priced exterior projects can signifi-

Tree talk #16 by Joe Reinschmidt It has been a while since you’ve heard from me. Probably longer than I realize since being well over a hundred years old time seems to slip past me My scribe tells me that many folks have expressed concern about my status and wonder where things stand. In human terms I think they call it status-quo. I’m still standing here as those of you who know me can plainly see when you pass by on Union Street. There appears to be a new sign out by the road but since I can’t see the front of it and couldn’t read it anyways it doesn’t matter much. Like most of you I’ve been through one of the worst winters in many years and at this point I’m assuming I have survived. Statistics are not my strong point so I can’t say how extreme it was compared to many other winters. You’ve probably heard enough about that from the weather experts. I’m just waiting to see if my buds will burst forth but I have the feeling this is one year that process will test my patience. As you may recall I was concerned that I couldn’t be of service for much of anything due to my immobility. It appears though that even with those limitations I have become a catcher of airborne plastic bags. Look closely at the picture and you will see several of them caught in the tips of my branches - at least for the moment. Others have been there and moved on after a big blast of wind. I’m sure you are all starting your preparations for gardening as it should be. Meanwhile I’ll just be standing here holding the bag(s). Happy Spring! Add design appeal to your home (StatePoint) You can add character and beauty to your home by learning more about your house’s architectural style and adding design elements to complement the look. “With the right knowledge, it’s easy to transform any room of your home as well as the exterior,â€? says Niki Decker, senior product and marketing manager with Fypon, which creates synthetic millwork products. The experts at Fypon are offering some tips and guidelines to achieve an authentic, coordinated look throughout your home -- inside and out. •Proportions matter. If you’re going to be adding shutters to your exterior, do a bit of math. The width of shutters used in pairs on a window should be half the width of the window, and should be the same height as the window. •The higher the ceiling, the taller the baseboard should be. Additionally, the height of your baseboard moulding should always be larger than the casing, which is the frame around a door or window. •Make a room feel taller by placing a chair rail -- the moulding used to prevent the backs of chairs from rubbing
against the wall -- one-third of the way up from the floor. Chair rails should be 1/2 or one inch narrower than casings. •If you have a classic Georgian style home, characterized by strict symmetry and a centered and paneled front door, cap the front door panel with an elaborate crown supported by decorative pillars. •Enhance your Victorian style home with ornamental spindlework on the porches and patterned shingles on the roof. Offset the complexity with simple surrounds for windows. •For country style cottages, consider clapboard shingles for siding, or wood shake for siding and roofing, and wide white trim or shutters around windows. •Complete the look and feel of your Mediterranean-style home, rich with such decorative accents as round columns, tile and stone, by planting lush gardens and installing an ornate fountain. •Maintain a traditional look with innovative, updated building material that lasts longer and with less upkeep. For example, polyurethane pieces are a lightweight alternative to wood. The pieces are easy to install and resist
