Greece Athena grad Shane Pease earns first college cross country win for RWC

The Roberts Wesleyan College men’s cross country team hadn’t run a race on its home course in 24 months, making Shane Pease’s victory in the Harry F. Anderson Invitational on September 25 even more special.

Pease, a senior from Greece Athena, completed the 8,000meter race in 25:39, which was .3 second faster than teammate Jimmy Betts, who ran stride for stride with Pease for the entire race on the Matt St. James Cross Country Trails.

The win, Pease’s first in college cross country, sparked the Redhawks to a second-place finish among 18 men’s teams.

A history major, Pease followed in the footsteps of his older brother Keith, a 2017 Roberts graduate by joining the Redhawks.

The 2021 East Coast Conference Preseason Runner of the Year, Pease shares his thoughts on several topics, including Saturday’s race, training through COVID and his expectations for the remainder of the season. His responses have been lightly edited for length and clarity.

What was it like to be back competing on your home course?

“I missed being out there last year when we were unable to compete, so I was really feeling the adrenaline. It was nice to be back out there on the course.”

You ran side by side with teammate Jimmy Betts on Saturday.

How special was it to win and record your first college victory in cross country?

“That was a very special moment because we are both seniors.

I have been on the same team with him since my freshman year, so it was really enjoyable.”

Did the race go according to plan?

“Our coach (Andrew Dorr) wanted us to do pack running. He is really a big fan of pack running and it usually helps runners out when they are running side-by-side with their teammate. Running by yourself isn’t the easiest thing in the world, so it is nice to have your teammate right there with you.”

What did being named ECC Preseason Runner of the Year mean to you? Did it give you any extra motivation?

“It was a nice honor, but I don’t think it gave me any extra expectations because I really don’t focus my attention on other people. I just try to focus on what I am doing and my teammates are doing.”

How did you train during COVID? “COVID was definitely more of mental battle than a physical battle. Some days it was difficult to wake up in the morning and work out, but over time I realized that we had a season coming up and I needed to get up and get moving.”

How did you fall in love with running?

“My brother was a runner in high school and he was really fast.

Every time that I saw him run, he was winning races and getting a ton of support and accolades. In seventh grade, I was like ‘I’ve got to try this.’ Once I had my first win in modified, I was like ‘This is great, this is awesome.’”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

“Honestly, I just want to keep getting better and better. I want to run faster times and keep seeing improvement, not just for me but for my teammates, too.”

Why did you choose Roberts?

“I chose Roberts because it’s a small, private school and I am not really a fan of bigger colleges. I wanted to develop close relationships with my professors, my coach and my teammates. Plus, everyone on the team is just amazing. I also came to Roberts because of my brother and his teammates. I got to know them and they were all great guys and I wanted to join them.”

Another successful Shredding Event is in our books! We recently held our Fall Shredding Event here in Greece, which is a bi-annual free service we provide to residents. Those who participated were able to stop by the Town Hall Campus and have their documents shredded confidentially on site.

Learn the sounds of fire safety Do you know what a continuous set of three loud beeps from your fire alarm means? How about four? Knowing the difference between these sounds can save you, your home, and your family.

Instead of taking immediate action in an emergency situation, many people waste time trying to figure out what the sounds mean instead of calling for help. Time is a valuable asset during a crisis and can mean the difference between life and death.

“Our lives and our homes are filled with technologies that use all kinds of sounds to help us. Sometimes all the beeps and chirps can just become white noise,” said John Farrell, President of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. “The sounds of our smoke and carbon monoxide alarms can help save lives or warn us when our lifesaving devices are starting to reach the end of their useful life. It is important that all New Yorkers know the ‘Sounds of Fire Safety’ and make the proper response when they hear them.”

Many residents remove the batteries from their alarms when they begin to chirp and end up forgetting to replace them. Others may think the sounds are a result of a defect. Unfortunately, by not investigating the situation further, it could present serious risks in the case of a fire or emergency situation. According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), three out of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms or in homes lacking smoke detectors. And a quarter of all smoke alarm failures are caused by dead batteries.

Working smoke alarms save lives by cutting the risk of dying in a home fire in half. Smoke alarms should be installed and maintained in every dwelling.

Smoke Alarm Safety Tips from NFPA: •Know the difference between the sounds of your alarms. Smoke alarms: three beeps. Carbon monoxide alarms: four beeps.

•When a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm sounds, respond immediately by first exiting your home, calling 911, and staying out of your home.

•Test your smoke alarms monthly by holding down the test button.

•If your smoke alarm begins to chirp, typically a single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds, it means that the batteries are low and should be replaced. If your smoke alarm continues chirping after batteries are replaced, it means the alarm is at the end of its life, and the unit must be replaced.

•Regularly replace your alarm’s batteries once a year. If your smoke alarm is more than ten years old, it is time to replace the alarm.

•Since 2019, NY State law requires all new or replacement smoke alarms to be powered by a ten-year, sealed, non-removable battery or hardwired to the home. Ten-year fire alarms still need to be tested monthly and replaced every ten years. They will chirp when the battery is low •Make sure your smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities. If there is someone in your household who is deaf or hard of hearing, install a bed shaker and strobe light alarms that will alert that person to fire.

• Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home for the best protection. When one sounds, they all sound. Make sure you can hear the sound of the smoke alarm.

Natural Ways to Strengthen Your Immune System and Protect Against the Corona Viruses

Your immune system is your front line in protecting your body from infection from viruses and bacteria. The immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that not only fight infection, but also keeps a record of every germ it has ever defeated so that it can recognize it and destroy it again if it re-enters the body. In order for this system to work optimally and protect you, it must be cared for. A healthy immune system is your best insurance policy to effectively fighting germs and reducing your risk to developing cancer.

With COVID being part of our regular life, it is even more important to carefully consider the health of our immune system.

Obesity alone doubles your risk for hospitalization for COVID infections and it increases your risk of death anywhere from 3.68 times to 12 times depending on your level of obesity. With obesity often comes chronic disease like insulin resistance/type 2 diabetes, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and increase in cancers. COVID does not distinguish who it infects, but it does drastically distinguish who it kills. In the United States, 94% of all COVID deaths had an average of 2.9 co-morbidities. By reducing your weight and chronic disease you can drastically reduce your risk to COVID complications.

Tips to help you get your immune system in top fighting condition: •Reduce/Eliminate Junk Food- You can combat insulin resistance, inflammation and obesity with a healthy diet. Eliminating as many processed foods and fast foods as possible should be top priority. Limiting carbs to less than 75 grams per day can help improve your insulin sensitivity in as little as 30 days, as well as improving your immune system. Time restricted eating can also be very beneficial to your immune system and overall health.

•Exercise Improves Immune Function- Your second-best ally in building a strong immune system is exercise. It can also combat complications of COVID by reducing immunosensescence, the decline in the immune system from aging. Resistance training improves blood flow and helps gain lean muscle which enhances the metabolism. Using light weights, resistance bands or gym equipment is helpful and allows you to create a workout that is suitable for your fitness level.

•Stress Reduction- How you manage stress is important to your overall health and your immune system’s ability to fight off infections. Cortisol is released during stress and can reduce the immune response by lowering the number of infections fighting soldiers called lymphocytes. Stress also promotes inflammation.

Inflammation is especially concerning when fighting a COVID infection. Turn off the news. Fear and panic increase stress. Meditation, reading, listening to relaxing music, yoga, walks in nature can all help you relax. Whatever engages you fully and takes you out of your head for a while counts as relaxation.

•Supplementation- There are several especially helpful supplements that can help boost your immune system and help you fight off viral illnesses. Vitamin D is an incredibly important supplement. It is important to know your vitamin D level. Ideally

above 40 is recommended but studies show that only 5.9 % of those with a vitamin D level of 55 or higher tested positive for COVID. It reduced their risk by 50% more than those with D levels of 20. (Largest observational study to date on Vitamin D and COVID, Journal PLoS One 9/2020). Vitamin D is also proven to drastically reduce the risk of being infected with influenza. The sun is an excellent source of Vitamin D but in this area our days with sun are limited as we head into our cooler seasons. Vitamin D3 is an inexpensive and readily available supplement.

•Zinc plays an important role in the immune systems ability to ward off viral infections and reduce the severity of vital infections. Using zinc combined with quercetin has shown to help block viral replication within minutes when used at the earliest onset of a viral infection including COVID. Healthy zinc supplementation may not be necessary if eating zinc rich foods like bison, beef, oysters, chicken, tofu, nuts, seeds, lentils, oatmeal and mushrooms.

•Melatonin is a hormone synthesized and helps as a sleep regulator, but it also boosts your immune system and reduces inflammation. It also has been shown to reduce infection of COVID and other respiratory viruses. It is a potent antioxidant which supports cardiorespiratory health. A recent study showed that those who took melatonin had a 28% lower risk of testing positive for COVID. African Americans who used melatonin had a 52% lower risk for testing positive. It is recommended that you start low with 1mg, 20 minutes prior to bed.

•Vitamin C is also very helpful for the immune system. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and an antioxidant. When you have an infection, Vitamin C improves the immune function by promoting the development of a type of white blood cell. When you are well, only 200 mg per day are suggested, when ill you can increase to 500 mg 2x a day.

GPAS Presents Halloween Family Celebration The Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) will celebrate Halloween with a festive and fun-filled musical afternoon for the entire family. The event will take place on Sunday, October 31, 2021, at 3:00 PM at 75 Stutson Street, Rochester, 14612.

This gala celebration will include a children’s parade and costume contest and live music with the Greece Choral Society directed by Dr. Rollo Fisher, Greece Concert Band directed by BJ

DCP warns of risks of fake COVID-19 vaccination cards The New York State Division of Consumer Protection (DCP) is warning New Yorkers about the risks of using or buying fake COVID-19 vaccination cards. As more and more places are requiring proof of vaccination, scammers are taking advantage of this opportunity by selling fake verification tools, including fake cards, certificates, test results, or even doctors’ notes. New Yorkers should be aware that buying fake vaccine cards, making their own, or filling the blanks with false information is illegal. The vaccines have repeatedly been proven to be safe. Opting for a fake vaccination card instead of getting vaccinated is an unnecessary health – and legal – risk.

State Police Superintendent Kevin P. Bruen said, “Making or possessing fake COVID-19 vaccination cards are serious crimes.

We are taking this issue very seriously due to the tremendous risk presented by these false documents. Anyone found to be involved with forged vaccine cards will be charged and face the legal consequences.”

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has received several complaints from people reporting cases of possible fraud related to COVID-19 vaccination. For instance, a consumer reported receiving counterfeit CDC vaccination cards in a vaccine card holder ordered online. The order included blank cards that anyone could forge to mimic authentic CDC vaccination cards. The FTC also received complaints of websites offering, for a fee, vaccine waivers and medical exemptions without seeing a doctor. The FTC is investigating these and other cases of possible vaccine fraud.

To avoid a run-in with the law or being a victim of a crime, the Division of Consumer Protection warns: •Presenting fraudulent COVID-19 vaccination cards or test results can land you in jail. Buying or making fake vaccine cards or filling in blank cards with false information is illegal and could lead to fines or even land you in jail.

•The only legitimate way to get proof of vaccination – or a negative test result – is to get vaccinated or to test negative. If you lose that proof, check with the state health department or your vaccine provider to find out how to obtain a replacement.

•Protect your personal information from COVID-19 scams.

Scammers set up fraudulent websites offering fake vaccine appointments or call people claiming to be COVID-19 surveyors to collect people’s personal information. Never give out personal information over the phone, especially if you unexpectedly receive a call asking for it. When scheduling a vaccine appointment online, schedule it directly through the New York Department of Health or ensure you’re using a legitimate site.

•Report fraud. New Yorkers should report vaccine-related fraud by calling 833-VAX-SCAM (833-829-7226) or emailing STOPVAXFRAUD@health.ny.gov.

New Yorkers are also encouraged to install the NYS Excelsior Pass Wallet app from the Apple Store or Google Play, or go to https://epass.ny.gov/home. Excelsior Pass and Excelsior Pass Plus are free, secure, voluntary platforms that provide digital proof or a digital copy of COVID-19 vaccination and/or negative test results. Passes can be displayed on any smart device or can be printed from any computer.

A group of aviation enthusiasts, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Chapter 44 of Rochester, are three years into restoration of a Baby Ace aircraft. The Baby Ace was the world’s first aircraft to be marketed as a homebuilt aircraft when the plans were offered for sale in 1929. Plans are still available for Baby Aces, and they are still being built today.

The EAA, Chapter 44’s BART (Baby Ace Restoration Team) project consists of students and adults working together to completely restore a donated plane and engine. Young members are getting experience with the skills needed to build an aircraft, and the adults are sharing and teaching their skills to the youth. The BART Group meets every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sport Aviation Center of Western New York (Ledgedale Airpark 7G0), 44 Eisenhauer Drive, Brockport, N.Y. 14420. Target date for completion of the Baby Ace restoration is Summer of 2022.

Dhruva Rana, a high school junior, said three years ago his mother suggested he look into the EAA Chapter 44 aviation group. “Every pilot needs to know about the working of a plane, inside and out, how it operates mechanically. Working on BART gives a unique perspective, I learn a lot from seeing how each part of the plane functions. You learn about the small things first, the sanding and fine tuning. Once you become skilled in doing that, you can do the big things like wood cutting and welding.

When you stay committed to a project it is really rewarding,” Dhruva said.

Dhruva has also learned from working hand to hand with the people in the BART group. “Working with the restoration team is a really unique experience. You are three generations working together. I would never have been able to meet people like this in any other place, I would never be able to find them. If I hadn’t met them through the Chapter, I would be missing out on a lot. I am really happy that they are taking the time to teach us what they know.” For his future career, Dhruva plans to work

for the Air Force as an instructor, teaching cadets how to fly. “I want to pass on to others what I have learned later in life, in my career.” Dhruva has over 100 working hours into the restoration program.

beginning, with approximately 550 hours of work on the Baby Ace. Tyler has been fascinated with aviation his whole life. For the first eight years of his life, his father was in the Air Force. He said, “My dad took me to air shows and I got a chance to see all of the planes. From the time I was little, aviation was my life.

My bedroom was always littered with models and drawings of planes. When I went to my dad’s office and saw a model of a plane I would just stare at it.”

Tyler attended one of EAA Chapter 44’s Young Eagles Program.

Attendance provides the opportunity to go flying in an airplane, free of charge. “When I walked through the door I saw the BART project, I knew that I wanted to work on it. I joined the Chapter right away.”

When Tyler participated in the Young Eagles free flight they gave him a log book. “The log book is like the Driver’s Handbook that the DMV gives you to study for your license. It contains all the information you will need to fly, rules and regulations, altitude restrictions, speeds, weather conditions, and about licenses and the rules of air space. With the help of the Chapter, I was able to attend ground school.” Tyler attended ground school online. Through an extensive series of video lessons, he was able to prepare for his pilot’s license. The Chapter also helped him begin flight training with the Ray Aviation Scholarship. The Chapter nominated him, and he was awarded a $10,000 scholarship.

Along with the scholarship comes a requirement, a one-year deadline to earn his pilot’s license. It took Tyler only nine months to get his license.

Tyler said the EAA Chapter, “Helped make my dreams come true. Many people never do get to realize their dream, and I am able to do that through my EAA membership.” Working on the BART project, Tyler says he has learned about every nook and cranny of an airplane. “I have a more intricate point of view of an airplane. I realize that each piece has a purpose, like a wing, it is a complex piece of equipment that fulfills a specific purpose.”

Tyler has also learned from the mentors he has gotten to know through the Chapter. “They are like friends, incredible people, they share their stories and we learn from that, what to do and what not to do. They have provided me opportunities that I only dreamed of.” The future plan is for Tyler to fly the restored Baby Ace, solo, to the EAA’s AirVenture Aviation Celebration held each year in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Tyler’s goal is a career in design, construction and testing of aircraft.

Bob Nelligan-Barrett is the adult BART team leader. He said, “I am glad that we finally have young people involved with the Chapter. Through the Young Eagles program, our Summer Camp and Scholarship program we have some younger members that joined our Chapter. I hope to be to these young members, the person that I didn’t have when I was growing up with an interest in aviation.” Through the Chapter, the young members are educated in aviation, and learn about career opportunities in the field, and learn lessons of discipline. “I really love working with all of the young members of our group. Sharing with them, and encouraging them is fulfilling for me. Aviation people are unique, we are very passionate about all things aviation, and about sharing our passion.”

Rochester’s EAA Chapter 44 is an organization, consisting of approximately 80 members. Founded in 1957, the Chapter enables people to realize their dreams of flight. Their mission continued on page 19

states, “EAA Chapter 44 was established to encourage, aid, and engage in study for the improvement and better understanding of aviation and the science of aeronautics, to promote and engage in the cause of aviation safety and education, to encourage and promote the development of private aviation and the development of amateur-built aircraft through home engineering, and finally, to foster close fellowship through the exchange of ideas, skills, and mutual interests. And to have fun doing it. Members include builders, aircraft restorers, non-pilot aviation enthusiasts, pilots and student pilots, ultra-light enthusiasts, aircraft owners, renters, spouses and more.”

EAA Chapter 44 is the only chapter in Rochester and the members are from all across the Rochester area.

Anyone with an interest in aviation, or an interest in working on the Baby Ace restoration project are invited to visit. General meetings for EAA Chapter 44 are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30. Greece Chamber Charitable Foundation Awards Three Nursing Scholarships The Greece Chamber Charitable Foundation Board of Directors recently awarded scholarships from the Foundation’s Daniel E. Richardson Memorial Fund in support of three students of the Isabella Graham Hart School of Practical Nursing of Rochester Regional Health: Deanna Rodriguez, Christina Torres, and Amanda Vaccarelli. The Board of Directors are proud to be recognizing and extending the legacy of excellence in nursing that was such a central theme in Daniel Richardson’s life.

In March 2018, the Greece Chamber’s Charitable Foundation established the Daniel E. Richardson Memorial Fund in honor of Daniel Richardson, the Foundation’s first Board Chair and an active member of the Foundation Board of Directors up until his untimely passing in January 2018. Overseen by the Foundation Board and guided by a Fund Committee comprised of business and community volunteers including Dan’s widow, Carol Richardson, the Fund supports grants and initiatives that help young people succeed in school, higher education and the

workforce.

The Golden Girls Are Starring In “A Christmas Carol” at the OFC Creations Theatre Center OFC Creations is presenting A Golden Girls Christmas Carol The Musical from December 3-31, 2021. Based on the 1980s sitcom, The Golden Girls are played by a cast of male actors with a brand new storyline.

Set in 2021, the story follows Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose who are excited to finally get out of quarantine and get glammed up for the Miami Community Center’s Christmas Pageant. Sophia, however, is grouchy from being cooped up and dishes out some zingers while refusing to embrace the holiday season. Forced to face her selfish ways, she encounters three celebrity ghosts, who lead her through her Past, Present, and Future. The three spirits attempt to fill Sophia with Christmas spirit and get her to the pageant. The musical comedy will feature a range of parody holiday tunes sharing what is sure to be a very golden Christmas.

Town of Greece Fiscal Stress Monitoring System Score Released The Town of Greece was recently informed by the New York State Comptroller that they have scored a “0” on the Fiscal Stress Monitoring System. This score lists the Town of Greece as “no designation,” which is the best designation a town can receive.

The Office of the State Comptroller uses the Fiscal Stress Monitoring System to examine the annual financial information reported by municipalities. The Comptroller’s Fiscal Stress Monitoring System is in place to give an early warning of fiscal stress to local governments and school districts by examining their financial information and all aspects of their external environment. The town is required each year to submit extensive budgetary paperwork for analysis by the Comptroller. The determination is made by evaluating budgetary solvency, the ability of a locality to generate enough revenue to meet expenses, and is the result

of measuring year-end fund balances, operating deficits/surpluses, cash position, use of short-term debt for cash flow and fixed costs.

The Town of Greece continues to work hard to keep finances in check, paying for many projects in cash and refinancing old debt for lower rates wherever possible. They have also paid off several buildings, and have healthy reserves which have assisted in lowering the tax rate while continuing to offer more amenities to residents. A great example of this is the addition of the new “Story Garden” Children’s Library expansion. This project was budgeted for and paid for in cash.

Reserve funds have helped to navigate the sometimes uncertain financial times during COVID, as well as any other emergencies that the Town has faced like flooding, wind storms and other weather-related events.

Best practices for fireplace inspections Nothing beats the cold like a warm wood-burning fireplace.

But homeowners need to maintain and service both the fireplace and chimney. New York State Homeland and Security Services (NYSHSS) recommends an annual chimney inspection by a qualified chimney sweep.

Regular chimney inspections can help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, which can occur if the fireplace and chimney are poorly ventilated. An experienced chimney professional can also tell if a chimney’s walls have a buildup of creosote, a flammable by-product of burning wood. Creosote is a fire hazard that can ignite and lead to chimney fires. It’s also toxic; exposure to creosote can irritate the eyes and skin and cause respiratory issues.

In addition, a chimney sweep can determine if the temperature of a chimney flue is too high, which can lead to a chimney fire. Once the fireplace and chimney have been inspected and serviced (if needed), it’s important to practice good safety habits to prevent a dangerous fire.

NYSHSS recommend the following maintenance practices for your fireplace and chimney: •Burn only well-seasoned hardwoods.

•Install a chimney cap.

•Install a carbon monoxide detector.

•Have a chimney sweep ensure that the chimney has an appropriate liner.

Be sure a wood or coal stove is installed at least 36 inches away from the wall and keep combustible materials far from the stove and chimney connector. NYSHSS also recommends placing an approved stove board under the unit to protect the floor from heat.

Supervisor Bill Reilich Welcomes Paneffort to the Town of Greece On September 28, 2021, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich and Director of Planning and Economic Development, Scott Copey, met with Phil Fitzsimmons and Billy Owens from Paneffort to discuss the Town’s ongoing support as they move toward locating in the old “Sams” location of the Elmridge Plaza.

The Town of Greece has maintained this plaza ever since it fell into bank-owned status. While being diligent in efforts to keep the code maintenance issues in check (parking lot, litter, etc.) and working with the bank, they have always prioritized offering any assistance possible to get this occupied. They are thankful for the efforts of Jay Wegman’s company and their partners in purchasing the plaza and working with the Town to secure tenants.

This is another example of the great work being done here in Greece in the newly formed Economic Development Department. Their work, combined with our new adaptive re-use zoning provisions, has made it possible for Paneffort to occupy a great deal of space in the plaza and to allow for their business to

grow. The business has been very busy trying to keep up with the PPE needs caused by the pandemic and they continue to grow and explore additional business opportunities in the health care supply field.

Proclamation Ceremonies held at Greece Town Board Meeting Several proclamation ceremonies were held during a recent Greece Town Board Meeting.

The first proclamation ceremony recognized two outstanding members of our community: Ali and Joyce Farrokh. Dr. Alinaghi Farrokh and Edna Joyce Baker were married in 1962. In 1967 “Ali” and “Joyce” moved to the Rochester area, at which time Dr. Farrokh began practicing medicine. In 1968, they purchased their first home on Mt. Read Blvd. in Greece. In June of 1968, Dr. Farrokh opened his medical practice at 2080 West Ridge Road.

The office remained at that location until 1988, at which time the practice relocated to 1790 Long Pond Road. Joyce Farrokh served as bookkeeper for the practice for a half century and office fill-in whenever needed. It is likely that over five decades the number of people served was well over 1,000. In 2017, Dr. Farrokh retired after 50 years of local medical practice. During that time, he was affiliated with Unity Health and Rochester General Hospital, and a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Ali and Joyce have four grown children: David, Fred, Zahra, and Aaron.

All are Greece Arcadia graduates. They also have eight grandchildren: Tanya, David, John, AnneMarie, Grant, Daniel, Claire, and Paul. The Farrokhs were among the early members of the Islamic Center of Rochester, which met in various locations prior to finding its current home on Westfall Road. Joyce has been an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Dewey Ave,

volunteering as a lay preacher, as well as a Crop Walk and craft show organizer. The couple are avid golfers and were members of Ridgemont for many years.

“I was proud to acknowledge Ali and Joyce and present them with a proclamation celebrating their lives and their positive impact on the health of many people in Greece and Greater Rochester,” said Supervisor Reilich.

The second proclamation ceremony of the evening recognized a local dance studio that was celebrating its 50th year anniversary. Marilyn Caccamise is the owner and director of the Marilyn Schneider School of Dance, located on Long Pond Road in the Town of Greece. Marilyn and her husband, Jerry, raised their family in the Town of Greece and Marilyn chose to locate her dance school in Greece. The importance of family and community is emphasized through Marilyn’s studio. Community projects Marilyn has led and participated in include, a food drive for local food banks, delivering goodies to health care workers, presenting many shows at local nursing facilities during the holidays, honoring past dancers that are no longer with us by creating scholarships in their names, and hosting a benefit show for the hospice Journey Home. In addition to her family and community involvement, Marilyn is also a creative and innovative teacher.

Marilyn embraced alternative options and technology to help the show go on by transitioning to online lessons. The Marilyn Schneider School of Dance offers a strong commitment to artistic integrity taught in a positive and nurturing atmosphere. The dance program Marilyn established blossoms talent and instills self-confidence and poise in all of her students. Marilyn’s students go on to do great things – including being featured on Broadway. This Thanksgiving season, Marilyn’s dancers will be performing at Disney World to kick off the holiday season. “I was honored to recognize Marilyn and present her with a proclamation celebrating the 50th year anniversary of the Marilyn Schneider School of Dance” said Supervisor Reilich.

The final proclamation recipient of the evening was Warren Crandell. Mr. Crandell was celebrating a special birthday milestone, 95 years. He reached this milestone on July 27th of this year. Mr. Crandell was born on July 27, 1926. He is a lover of music, children, literature, politics, and people in general! He also loves to dance, travel, sing, and ski. Having been an educator for 40 years, he understands the importance of knowledge, and he never wants to stop learning. He graduated from Oswego College and taught at Allendale Colombia School. He also helped establish the Industrial Arts Program at Olympia High School and helped expand the Industrial Arts Program at Britton Road School. He donates towards the Greece Teachers Scholarship Fund to help students who want to become teachers. Even after he retired, teachers would ask him to come and talk to their students and encourage them to go on and become teacher. Mr. Crandell’s love of music developed from his mother, who taught music in schools. His love of literature and poetry can be traced back to his mother’s side of the family as well, as there is a connection in the family to the family of William Shakespeare. Mr. Crandell is a proud supporter of the Eastman School of Music and loves to hear the students perform and grow as musicians. He is also a supporter of WXXI Public Television. Mr. Crandell has also been a member and program chairperson of the Retired Men’s and Women’s Club of Greater Rochester. Throughout his life, he has been a member of the Genesee Valley Barber Shop Group.

Mr. Crandell is a veteran and served in the navy from 1944-1946.

Social Security introduces redesigned statement Kilolo Kijakazi, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, has introduced a new look and feel to the Social Security Statement, available online through the my Social Security portal at www.socialsecurity. gov/myaccount and by mail. The Statement is one of the most effective tools people can use to learn about their earnings and future Social Security benefits. This fresh look will allow millions of people to see their earnings information and estimates of future benefits quickly and securely.

“One of my top priorities is to provide information to people in clear and plain terms about Social Security’s programs and services,” said Acting Commissioner Kijakazi. “The streamlined Social Security Statement contains clear messaging and makes it easier to find information at a glance, helping to simplify our complex programs for the public.”

The agency conducted extensive research, review, and testing to make the updated Statement easy to understand. The new Statement is shorter, uses visuals and plain language, and includes fact sheets tailored to a person’s age and earnings history. It also includes important information people have come to expect from the Statement, such as how much a worker and family members could expect to receive in Social Security benefits and a personalized earnings history, in a clear, concise manner. Examples of the new Statement and fact sheets are available at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount/statement.html.

More than 61 million people have already created my Social Security accounts. U.S. citizens age 18 or older can easily view their redesigned Social Security Statement online by creating a my Social Security account. People age 60 or older who do not receive benefits and do not have a my Social Security account will receive their Statement by mail three months before their birthday. Workers should check their Statement at least once a year for accuracy.

People can check information and conduct most Social Security business through their personal my Social Security account. If they already receive Social Security benefits, they can start or change direct deposit online, request a replacement SSA-1099, and if they need proof of their benefits, they can print or download a current Benefit Verification Letter from their account.

In addition to obtaining their personalized Social Security Statement, people not yet receiving benefits can use their account to request a replacement Social Security card online if they meet certain requirements. The portal also includes a retirement calculator and links to information about other online services, such as applications for retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits.

Many Social Security services are also available by dialing toll-free, 1-800-772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call Social Security’s TTY number, 1-800-325-0778.
