Neighbor Donates Flag to Fire Station Last month Ridge Road firefighters were returning from a structure fire in the Barnard Fire District to their quarters on Stone Ridge Drive. When they arrived they discovered local resident Bradley Howe who wanted to present a humbling gift. Mr. Howe explained he thought the Stone Ridge firehouse could use a new flag which he brought to donate.

The firefighters from Group 2 and Group 3 were coming in for their night shift and immediately hung the flag to display.

Mr. Howe, a United States Navy veteran from the Vietnam era, expressed thanks to the firefighters for the services they provide to the community. It is not often we get praise for the work we do and we are extremely appreciative of Bradley’s kind words and extraordinary gesture.

The Stone Ridge firehouse has been serving residents and neighborhoods on the east side of the Ridge Road Fire District with pride and professionalism since 1971. The donated flag will fly proudly over our firehouse for months to come.

A Message from the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf about this year’s Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets The Thanksgiving Basket Program has always been successful because of the overwhelming support from our community. Last year 252 families in Greece and Charlotte were sponsored through churches, organizations and individual donors.

The Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf, due to the pandemic, is expecting an increase in requests this year.

However, this year poses problems for donors as well as with churches and clubs not able to meet in person complicated by the fact that the pandemic requires a different set of standards for preparation and delivery. As a result, GEFS is encouraging the donation of funds for gift cards to be giving out in lieu of actual Thanksgiving food. Those with no transportation to the GEFS will have cards for dinners delivered.

With donations understandably down, there may be some

families who will be struggling to put Thanksgiving Dinner on their tables.

GEFS does not want a family to have to choose between dinner and rent. That is why we are sending out this appeal for donations for funds for Thanksgiving dinners.

No amount is too small to donate.

Acts of kindness

It is a tough time to be a police officer. Recent cases alleging police misconduct have caused the profession to be vilified and have resulted in protests and violence in our area and across the country.

Police officers’ actions have never been more scrutinized than they are now with the use of body-worn cameras and citizens using their phones to capture video of police interactions. The clips that become viral are those cases few and far between which cast a negative light on the profession of law enforcement.

But what is often not seen is the overwhelming appreciation of police officers by citizens and communities who are quietly and consistently offering support and heartwarming acts of kindness to show how much they appreciate law enforcement’s presence in their community. Although these acts typically don’t garner headlines like the negative news, they deeply touch the spirit of the men and women in blue who risk so much to protect our communities.

According to Sgt. Jared René, the Greece Police Department has been “receiving tremendous support.” René, who oversees the Community Services Department, says the outpouring of kindness has been “unbelievable.” The GPD has received food, coffee, pizza, donuts, and catered meals. Even K-9 Ryan received a special treat of ice cream from supportive Greece residents.

According to René, there has been a steady influx of citizens in the last few months showing their support for the Greece Police officers. “They are going out of their way to thank us for our services,” said Sgt. René. “It’s really nice to hear it and helps the officers feel like they are being supported, especially during this challenging time.”

Chief VanBrederode of the Gates Police Department is also the President of the Monroe County Chiefs of Police.

Chief VanBrederode began his career in the Rochester Police Department. He now has over 35 years in law enforcement. He has seen some high-profile national cases throughout his career

that have cast a negative light on law enforcement and created much unrest. “When a controversy swells, we do often see an increase in kindness coming from the community,” said Chief VanBrederode. The Gates Police received many handwritten letters and emails from community members expressing their gratitude to the department. They have also received gifts of food, coffee, and sub trays, while Sonny, their Golden Lab K9, has received dog biscuits. While out on patrol, officers have

residents come up to them, thank them and buy their coffee while in line at local coffee shops. “This is a huge morale booster,” said Chief VanBrederode. The roll call room of the Gates Police Department has a wall dedicated to these expressions of appreciation. “I put the notes and letters we receive up on the wall so they can see them and be reminded that they are appreciated and know that people are supporting them.”

After the RPD incident, many concerned residents called to ask if the Gates PD would be defunded or abolished due to the protest requests. Chief VanBrederode assures that it is not even a topic being discussed in the Town of Gates. He feels that the best ideas often come at times of crisis. “It gives us an opportunity to improve humanizing our department.” In June, shortly after the Minneapolis incident, the Gates PD held a “Hot Dog with a Cop” event. With the help of Barton’s Hots, the Gates PD served almost 700 residents and allowed them to bond with the men and women in blue.

Sgt. Robert Hagen has also noticed an increase of community gratitude at the Brockport Police Department. “Residents of the community have stopped me and other officers just to say thank you, and I say thank you back to them” The Brockport PD has seen an increase in food gifts being dropped off at the station since the summer, and especially in the last month. “Cookie trays delivered by True Blue NY and food trays have been dropped off for us. It lifts our spirits to know that there are people out there who appreciate our presence and recognize what we are doing out in the community,” said Sgt. Hagen.

Chief Nenni of the Holley Police Department and the Albion Police Department has also seen a positive show of support from the communities his agencies serve. “We have been receiving a good amount of correspondence from individuals in the community showing support, including some handwritten letters expressing gratitude. That means a lot, especially when a person goes out of their way to mail us a letter.” There seems to be a general understanding that these are difficult times to be a police officer.

With almost 30 years on the job, Chief Nenni has seen an amazing change in community policing over the years.

Community policing service models create a focus on the citizens of the community as the customers. The idea in community policing was that a closer partnership between the police and residents could help reduce crime and make the community safer. According to Chief Nenni, this style policing began to take off in the 1980s and has been steadily evolving and improving since. “When we compare how much policing has improved since the fifties and sixties, we are leaps and bounds better. It is a shame that a few incidents can so quickly tarnish all the good work and reputation of policing. Despite what you might see in the media, I feel the silent majority know our job is hard and support the work we do in the community,” said Nenni.

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order called “New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative” that requires local police agencies to develop a plan based on community input by April 2021 to be eligible for future state funding. Chief Nenni says, “This is very positive. It allows us to have focus groups and discussions within our community to address issues that may not have been fully addressed yet, ranging from traffic, noise control, racial issues, and any issues that can be improved on. It helps us learn how we can better serve you.”

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Offices have also seen an uptick in expressions of gratitude from the community during

these difficult times. Captain Samuel Bell of the C Zone (Ogden Substation) said, “We would get food or baked goods occasionally in the past, but in the past month, we are receiving items from the community almost daily. We have had cookies delivered, dinners, a chicken barbecue from a local senior center, and a pizza lunch from a local church group. It puts a smile on our face during these dark times.” The MCSO has even noticed an increase in support while out on their calls with citizens sending friendly waves, saying thanks, and shaking the officer’s hand. “The cards and letters from the community are hung up in our roll call room to help remind the officers that people in the community do care and support them for the job that they do,” said Captain Bell.

Law enforcement officers have also become a conduit of community service in the towns that they serve. Many agencies, especially those on the west side, have active outreach programs to help connect with citizens of all ages ranging from young children to senior citizens. The myriad of programs the officers volunteer with help forge bonds between the community, businesses, and the officers. The Greece Police Department is active with Healthy Highway, which involves mentoring grade school children to eat healthily, as well as Police Athletic League, where officers coach sports for local children. Many agencies offer Shop with a Cop where underprivileged children go Christmas shopping with an officer. Gates Police Department recently offered a Citizens Police Academy. They also welcomed students back to school with a parade and Chief VanBrederode greeting kids on their first day. In Brockport, it’s not uncommon to see an officer on foot patrol stop to shoot hoops with area youth, or hand out turkeys on routine traffic stops at Thanksgiving. These are just a few examples of the outreach many law enforcement agencies provide to support their communities. In turn, the community is supporting officers through these difficult days with an outpouring of appreciation and many acts of kindness.

On October 1, 2020 a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Greece Public Library for the new 6,575 sq. ft. addition to the Children’s Library area. The ceremony was hosted by Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich and attended by Greece Town Board Members, members of the expansion Construction Team, Project Architects, Library Board Members and Library Staff. Due to COVID-19 restrictions attendance was limited. The groundbreaking ceremony can be viewed on the Town of Greece website.

The Children’s Library expansion project was in the planning process several months before COVID-19 and the decision was made to continue forward with the project, especially since the pandemic has kept people closer to home and using community resources in a renewed way. This project is fully funded and will be paid for in cash, as a result no taxes will be raised.

The 6,575 sq. ft. expansion brings the total of the Children’s Library area to 10,125 sq. ft. Included in the project are a covered outdoor children’s story time patio, a mezzanine play area, energy efficient LED lighting, dedicated children’s bathroom, a new story and craft room, centrally located staff offices, new play area rotunda, skylights and added natural lighting, and new children’s librarian reference desk.

During the ground breaking ceremony Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said, “The Town of Greece is home to nearly 100,000 residents. Roughly more than 300,000 patrons pass through the doors of our library each year and this number is trending upward. With this expansion our Children’s Library will be state-ofthe-art and a place that provides fun, learning and growing for our families.”

Jennifer Preisser has been the Children’s Librarian in Greece for 13 years. Jennifer has two library assistants Karen Deisigner

and Laura Sidoti who work with her on programing and purchases. The pandemic has presented many challenges to the very busy Children’s Library program. “We worked at finding ways to reach families with our programs. There were challenges, it was very important to stay connected to the children and families that you love so much and enjoy being a part of,” Preisser said.

Virtual programs were scheduled and a YouTube channel and Facebook page were set up for story time and sharing.

A new program that Preisser has designed is a virtual “Baby Art” program where parents register their child, pick up a kit from the library that contains everything needed for the project and then tune in for the virtual guidance. When the children complete their project they have the ability to upload their finished art to share with all the participants. “This has been a wonderful project to do,” Preisser said.

It was also very important for Preisser to see the families face to face. “We needed to find a way to do outdoor programs. We connected with the Town and they provided space in the pavilion where we could meet, socially distanced, for storytime. It has been well received and we have a waiting list each week with families eager to connect. It is a great opportunity to continue to serve the community the best we can while keeping everyone safe,” Preisser said.

Preisser is very excited about the Children’s Library expansion project. She said, “It was an amazing opportunity to be a part of the planning process and a privilege to be able to give my opinions and suggestions. It was exciting to witness how the design team was very careful with planning and decisions. They welcomed my input about what works with different age groups and continued on page 18

what works best for all our program needs. The new Children’s Library is going to be a special space. It will be state-of-the-art for families and will attract people from far and wide.”

How a Food Pantry Can Help Kids This summer we passed the two-year anniversary of the start of the Client Choice in-person shopping at the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf. It has been one year since our new process for deliveries began. These changes have dramatically increased our ability to provide a wider range of foods and improve the nutritional value of what we give to our clients. This is especially important for the children we serve.

Various studies have shown food preferences are established early in life through what parents and caregivers give to babies

and toddlers to eat. Later, what a child eats is determined by what they see others eat and what they see advertised. That is why parental participation and modeling of good eating behaviors is so important. TV also plays a large role in what children want to eat, and it is often not a beneficial influencer.

One in three children in the United States is obese. Obesity in children leads not only to medical problems, but is associated with poor self-esteem and body image, depression, social isolation and eating disorders. Over- weight children face stigmatization as early as preschool. In school-age children it can lead to social rejection by their peers.

Increasing the availability of fresh foods, especially fruits and vegetables, to low socio-economic groups is key to preventing the development of poor eating habits. Carbohydrates are typically cheaper foods (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes) while high nutritional value foods are more expensive.

Parents can’t model good eating habits if they struggle to put food on the table. It’s tough to maintain a healthy weight when your meals are heavy on the carbohydrates.

Over the past two years the Food Shelf has made great strides towards helping parents get children on the path to healthy eating. We hope this will have life-long impact on people in our community.

Kiwanis Club donates to Girl Scouts Kiwanis Club of Greece made a $250 donation to the Girl Scouts of Western New York. The presentation was made virtually, the check was mailed.

The funds will be allocated for ten girls to receive a scholarship for a one year membership in Girl Scouts for the upcoming year, October 1, 2020-September 30, 2021.

With so many families facing financial difficulties, this will make sure that more girls will still be able to participate in Girl Scouts.

There’s nothing like colorful annual climbing and flowering vines to add charm to your garden and landscape. They add an almost magical quality to your plantings and grow rapidly, yet are not a long-term commitment.

Annual vines are a great way to add a vertical dimension to your landscape, even in your vegetable garden or in containers. You can use vines to hide or camouflage spots in your yard that are not attractive. Annual vines can be used to create warm-weather privacy screens and help elements like fence posts and mailbox posts appear more natural and less dominant.

According to Iowa State University Extension, annual vines are easy to grow and are relatively free of pest problems. Here is a selection of several of the annual vines that you can grow.

Hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus) grows 10 to 30 feet in a growing season and can completely cover a fence or trellis with its twining stems. The large, six-inch green leaves feature burgundy veins, and the stems are also a burgundy color. Vines produce clusters of purple or white flowers beginning in mid-summer right through fall. The bean pods are flat and burgundy colored. Hyacinth bean needs full sun and well-drained soil. Iowa State recommends soaking the seeds in warm water a day or two before planting directly into the garden. You can eat hyacinth bean pods if you harvest when they are young and tender.

Morning glory vines (Ipomoea purpurea) grow best in full sun to partial shade. To help germination, nick the seed coat with a file or soak the seeds in warm water before planting. You can direct-seed morning glories or start indoors four to six weeks before planting outside (although I cannot recommend starting them inside near lace curtains as I did years ago. I’m sure your imagination will easily envision what a disaster that was). Morning glory vines begin to bloom in mid-to-late summer, and as their name indicates, their bright and cheerful blooms will often close in the afternoon on sunny days.

Sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) are an old-fashioned flower grown for their fragrance. They rapidly reach up to six feet tall with flowers appearing in early summer in colors from blue and lavender to salmon and red. Tendrils will make their way easily up a trellis or fence. Soak seeds overnight in warm water before seeding and sow in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked.

Scarlet runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus) climb 10 to 20 feet.

The bright green leaves contrast strikingly with the multiple sprays of flaming-red, pea-like flowers. Plant in early May in a protected, sunny location (I have direct-sown in early June and they do fine – just flower a bit later). Pods can be eaten when they are small; if left on the vine, they can grow to a foot long and will turn black, mottled with purple. Another great perk – the flowers are edible – use them for garnishes, in salads, or maybe to decorate cakes!

These are just a few of the many annual flowering vines that can add so much to your garden, and don’t forget about other bean varieties that vine and even cucumbers and gourds that can be trained over trellises and arbors.

Most gyms throughout our area have reopened and are following new protocols to ensure a sanitary environment. You will find that the sanitation of surfaces is occurring more frequently by the fitness center’s staff. Equipment is also spaced out to allow a healthy distance between members. The mask requirement is also still in effect in New York State.

Here are some tips to help you get to the gym for your workouts and stay healthy: Be time and space conscious - Most facilities are limiting the number of members that can enter. Try to schedule your workouts when its naturally less crowded. Peak workout hours are usually before work or in the evening. If you are of high risk and concerned, perhaps a smaller gym would help limit the number of people you would be potentially exposed to. The less time you spend in the gym the less exposure you will have. So, get in and get your workout done and get out.

Sanitize sanitize sanitize - Although the fitness center takes care of the equipment, I suggest you take control of your personal sanitation. Start by using hand cleaner after you put your mask on before entering the gym. Rewash you hands a few times during the work out and on your way out.

Bring your own supplies, hand cleaner and disinfectant wipes.

Exciting things are happening at the Greece Public Library Main Branch! This past month, we held a ground breaking ceremony for the Children’s Area Expansion Project.

This project is a culmination of several months of planning to create a new state-of-the-art space for our young residents. The new features included in the additional 6,575 square feet include a covered outdoor children’s story time patio, a mezzanine play area, energy efficient LED lighting, dedicated children’s bathroom, a new story and craft room, centrally located staff offices, new play area rotunda, skylights and added natural lighting, and new children’s librarian reference desk.

I am pleased to announce that Greece Town Judge Brett Granville has been appointed to Acting Administrative Judge for the Greece Town Court. Judge Granville is known to be fair-minded and professional at all times. He exhibits patience and compassion and carefully listens to all sides of a case when rendering a decision. Mask up - Most people can perform regular workouts while wearing a face mask. Although it might not be as comfortable it helps you avoid touching your face after touching gym surfaces as well as reduce breathing in some one else’s germs. Slowly acclimate to doing cardio with a mask. Increase time and intensity gradually. If you feel dizzy at all take a rest and step outside for some fresh air.

Bring your own water and shower at home - Due to the policies issued by the state, water fountains are closed. Be sure to bring your own water if your gym does not sell water. Showers are also required to be closed so plan accordingly. Although the safety protocols might seem inconvenient at first, it is important to remember that one of the best ways to improve your immune system and fight all viruses including COVID - 19 is to exercise regularly, eat a healthy balanced diet and maintain a healthy body weight. As we have learned from the past six months of a pandemic, our health is our greatest wealth!

Arbor Day Foundation Names the Town of Greece Tree City USA

The Town of Greece was named a 2019 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the United States Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

The Town of Greece achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements which include a tree board, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

“The Arbor Day Foundation has once again congratulated the Town of Greece on earning recognition as a 2019 Tree City USA. The Tree Council, our Greece Town Board, and I are committed to attaining this goal every year. Preserving our town’s natural beauty is a very important mission. Participants sought for Alzheimer’s study The first infusion of an investigational drug that aims to delay or help to prevent the earliest memory loss due to Alzheimer’s disease took place in September at Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Japanese drug manufacturer Eisai Inc., the AHEAD Study is the first Alzheimer’s disease trial to recruit people as young as 55 years old who are at risk of developing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease as they get older. It introduces a personalized medicine approach that will tailor treatment dose levels to a participant’s particular risk of memory loss related to Alzheimer’s disease.

“We know that changes in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease begin up to 20 years before a person notices symptoms, but until now most clinical trials have included older patients who already have symptoms,” said Reisa Sperling, MD, director of the Center for Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and coprincipal investigator for the AHEAD Study. “By inviting younger participants, we hope to help individuals who are at higher risk – such as people with family history – get ahead of the disease with early intervention. We also want to reach diverse communities to learn more about why people of color may be at higher risk of cognitive decline.”

The AHEAD Study consists of two different clinical trials testing the same investigational drug (known as BAN2401). Participants are enrolled in one of the two trials based on the level of amyloid in their brain. Amyloid is a protein that builds up in people who can go on to have memory problems and develop Alzheimer’s disease. The trial is led by experts at the University of Southern California’s Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Research Institute, the Alzheimer’s Clinical Trials Consortium, Brigham and Women’s Hos-

pital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard Medical School.

“The personalized approach for people years before memory loss has begun has the potential to be a breakthrough in Alzheimer’s prevention,” said Stephen Salloway, MD, MS, and director of the Memory and Aging Program at Butler Hospital. “This new tailored approach can potentially serve as a model to improve clinical trials in Alzheimer’s research and other diseases.”

The sixth leading cause of death in the United States, Alzheimer’s is the only disease among the top 10 causes of death that cannot be prevented, cured, or slowed. Currently, 5.6 million Americans 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s and this number is expected to nearly triple by 2050. Communities of color experience higher incidence of the disease than white communities, yet they remain underrepresented in clinical research.

“Both of my parents were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

I can’t run away from that, but I can help find a potential treatment,” said Dave Kalberer, recipient of the first AHEAD infusion at Butler Hospital. “I’m proud to be at the front of the line for this exciting opportunity and am hopeful this trial can change not just my life but millions more.”

The AHEAD Study seeks 1,165 participants from North America. The study has more than 100 study locations worldwide, including Rochester. For more information on eligibility requirements or to find a trial site location, visit AHEADstudy.org.
