Santii’s Dream by Barbara Burke

How does a young girl’s dream come true? The answer for eight year old Santii Patel is when her community rallies behind the dream to make it happen. Santi is a third grader at Lakeshore Elementary School in Greece. In the summer of 2019 Santii was at the community playground with her mom Becca and little brother Nikolai. She noticed a young girl in a wheelchair that was at the playground. Santii felt bad that girl was not able to use the swing like she can. “I wanted her to have fun like I was. I wanted her to feel the wind on her face and blowing her hair while she was swinging. I asked my mom if we could buy her a handicap swing,” Santii said. Santii’s mom Becca said OK how will we do this, and Santii responded, “Let’s sell cocoa, everyone loves cocoa!” So Santii made cocoa and the next day set up a stand at her home. Becca said, “She sold a cup to me and to her father and to a neighbor. She made $5 that first try. I was hoping that maybe she would make around $100 and she could donate it to a worthy cause.” The next day at school Santii told the school resource officer about what she was doing. The officer put out an email blast to the Greece Police, Fire Department and Ambulance as well as to teachers and friends about what Santii was working to achieve. “We had such a huge response, the police cars, fire trucks and ambulance workers as well as friends and neighbors all came out to support her,” Becca said. She also sold lemonade and is collecting cans in her fundraising efforts. Next to get involved with Santii’s dream was Rob Tortorella, Founder of Endless Highway. According to the Endless Highway website, “Endless Highway is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to ensuring children and young adults with physical disabilities have opportunities to

Greece News March/April 2021 5 participate in adaptive and inclusive sports, recreation, and arts. With the generous support of donors and community partners, we help youth and families leverage their talents and interests in the pursuit of inclusivity, independence, and success.” Totorella said, “I heard about Santii’s Dream through a mutual friend who called me and told me about her raising money for a wheelchair adaptable swing. Consulting with Caralie Fennessey, our Operations and Communications Director, we talked about what type of playground equipment would best meet the needs of what Santii is wanting to do. Caralie is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist with a graduate degree in Integrative Design from RIT. She combines her experience in recreation therapy and understanding of adaptive design to create solutions for unique needs related to disability.” Through their Build to Include partnership, they decided on the We-Go-Round®. The We-Go-Round®, by Landscape Structure, is a unique merry-go-round structure featuring ground-level entry and wide openings for child and adult wheelchair navigation with seating, standing, and parking areas inside. Rooftop shade, center handholds, a built-in speed control mechanism, and easily wipeable surface materials provide additional safety for all participants. Once on board, everyone faces the center of the system, so that smiles, conversations, and laughter can easily be shared while in orbit. The piece is not only accessible to those with and without disabilities, it is designed to inspire children, adults, and families of all abilities to play together. It will be the first one build in Monroe County. In January of 2020, Rob Tortorella, Greece Police Officers, School Principal James Palermo, local TV news, and many others surprised Santii during class with the announcement that Build to Include would be joining her fundraising efforts. the surprise Santii said, “I had stage fright. When I saw everyone come into the classroom and they called my name I thought I was in trouble. They gave me a microphone and I couldn’t even talk. When Rob told me what they were there for, it made me so, so happy.” That wasn’t the only surprise Santii experienced since she started to pursue her dream of accessible playground equipment. In December of 2020 Santii was visited on Skype by Kelly Clarkson during her show. Kelly received a letter from Santii’s mom regarding her mission. Kelly surprised Santii with $5,000 and a video visit from JoJo Siwa, an American dancer, singer, actress and YouTube personality. Santii is a huge fan of JoJo. About the surprise video visit from JoJo Santii said, “I was really excited to see her and she told me she was a fan of mine and to “Keep living the dream like a candy queen.” I was so happy that they are helping me to get the We-Go-Round so all the kids can play together.” The Town of Greece will also be playing a part in Santii’s Dream. With Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich, along with the Director of Parks and Recreation, Peter O’Brien, closely involved in the project, the Town of Greece will be a leader in providing an inclusive and accessible playground experience for all. The Town will provide the outdoor space for for the We-Go-Round® at their Town Hall Campus and help with the fundraising. Target date for ground breaking is early July 2021. The fundraising goal to build the We-Go-Round® on the Greece Town Campus playground is $50,000.

Garden Journaling by Kristina Gabalski

A garden journal can be many things. It can be a powerful resource containing detailed information, plant observations, weather, soil conditions, and wildlife encounters. It can be a scrapbook of personal observations, drawings, and photos that document a growing season. It can be a way to engage children in the garden by regularly observing a portion of the garden over the span of a year. It can be a therapeutic creative outlet fueled by your love of growing things. The journal itself can be blank sheets of paper clipped together, a notebook, three-ring binder, scrapbook, purchased blank journal, or a digital format – whatever would be easiest for you, because you want to persist in keeping your journal throughout the entire year, and perhaps many years to come. If you would like to create a serious journal for documenting all aspects of your plants and landscape, you will want to include information about your site, seasonal factors, plants, pests, projects, and expenses, according to North Carolina State Extension. Record site characteristics, including sun and shade patterns, directions of slopes, swales, and wind direction – where do prevailing winds hit the garden? Where does flooding occur? Does frost settle in this location? A single yard can have multiple microclimates, and understanding your garden site can be vital to a successful growing season and for long-term planning. You can use graph paper or a computer program to draw your garden to scale – noting buildings, utilities, water, hardscape, and plants. Using a pencil allows you to make adjustments as plants die and new ones are planted. Documenting plants and hardscape ele-

Chamber Hosts Presentation with Lead for the COVID-19 Vaccine Hub, Dr. Nancy Bennett The Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a virtual presentation with Dr. Nancy Bennett, MD, MS, Lead for the Finger Lakes COVID-19 Vaccine Hub. The Finger Lakes COVID-19 Vaccine Hub is an organization helping to distribute the vaccine in the region. Located at University of

ments helps you to analyze how they interact, NC State Extension says. For example, are perennial flowers and shrub roots choking out your spring bulbs? A garden journal is a great place to document soil test results. You will be able to look back and see how soil amendments have helped build healthy soil as well as other changes over time. Make a note of the amendments you use, including brand names, nutrient amounts, garden location, and dates. Environmental data can be collected from year to year, allowing you to compare weather conditions over many growing seasons. Keep track of temperatures, last and first frosts, rainfall, and snowfall. This information is interesting to reference and can help you identify microclimates as well as decide when to plant tender annuals or determine if drought-tolerant plants are needed for a hot spot in your yard. You can create a calendar for seasonal chores like vegetable planting, bulb planting, fertilizing, pruning, deadheading, pest management, and more. A journal allows you to keep track of when plants bloom, pest and disease problems, and what methods proved successful against them. You can even create detailed plant profiles, including Latin and common names, when the plant was purchased, its cost, expected mature size, your observations regarding growth and bloom, problems, as well as pruning and fertilizing times. Be sure to include images in your journal. Photographs are great, but you might want to try illustrations, or press plant materials to preserve them in your journal. Take before and after photographs of garden projects. Additionally, provide information about harvests and keep track of any seed saving efforts or seed purchasing. Don’t forget to include ideas and inspiration for future garden projects. Of course, a journal can be a very personal account of your gardening year. You can include anything you feel is important about weather, diseases, plants, gardening experiences, and dreams. Taking time to sit in your garden to observe, reflect, and enjoy is therapeutic and truly connects you to your landscape. Journaling is a great way to engage children in the garden and landscape all year. Draw pictures, preserve leaf and flower samples, write a poem, and watch birds and butterflies come and go. Make your journal beautiful and an expression of your personal creativity. Garden journals help you to learn more about your garden and enjoy it more. Finally, think about the keepsake that your journal will become, making it easy and enjoyable to go back and review the highlights and challenges of a particular gardening year. Firefighters Construct Little Library You may see a new building on the property of the Ridge Road Fire District’s Stone Ridge Station. This miniature firehouse is a “Little Library” created to mirror the Stone Ridge Station. The “Little Library” is used to help provide fire safety materials and books to the children of the neighborhood. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, the Fire District’s fire prevention program has been limited to online presentations and has had to stray from in-person fire prevention instruction. Having the Little Library provides us a great way to disseminate fire prevention materials to children of all ages. The crew from Group 3 (Lt. Balok, and Firefighters Shannon, Neufeglise, Tucker, and Steves) at Stone Ridge were instrumental in preparing the site and putting the little library together. Barnes and Noble, the National Fire Academy, American Red Cross, and Staff from Radiation Oncology @ Wilmont Cancer Institute Greece provided the contents. MT ED Musical Arts Theatre moves into Historic Building by Barbara Burke On December 1, 2020, the MT ED Musical Arts Theatre moved to 4785 Lake Avenue, Charlotte, into the former home of The Penny Arcade music club. Before The Penny Arcade closed for good in 2009 it was one of the most revered and long lasting rock-music clubs in Rochester’s history. Bands like Bon Jovi, Bad Company, Joan Jett and Gregg Allman played there. Tina Crandall-Gommel of Greece is Founder and Artistic Director of MT ED, a musical education and performing arts program for students ages five to adult. MT ED was formerly located at the Bruce Music & Theatre Academy located at 75 Stutson Street in Charlotte. During the summer programs, Tina walked with her summer camp students down Lake Avenue to the beach each day to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. She said, “I walked by and noticed that The Penny Arcade building was empty, I knew it was a cool space with a stage, I used to go to teen dances there. We were outgrowing our space, so I decided to meet with the landlord to see about renting it. As soon as I saw the space I realized that it would meet our needs perfectly. When my team went through it, we all immediately saw the possibilities of what it could be.” Renovations immediately began, and are still in process. Completed renovations include complete clean up, painting, repairs to the rest rooms, new stage lighting and a new sound system. They expanded the stage. Currently it is the open box style, the future plans are to frame it so the actors can enter and exit without being seen. They have converted the former kitchen space into the chorus room, the rest of the space is the dance studio and audience seating. “The Penny Arcade building is a very historic place and it needs to be preserved. In everything we do we want to honor Greg Sullivan, the founder of The Penny Arcade. People have an attachment to their memories and to this place. The bar is famous, known as one of the longest bars in Rochester. We noticed that parents were using the bar to work on, and we decided to keep it and to use it for that purpose. In between classes the kids also use it as a work space. We are also keeping the Penny Arcade sign that is on the front of the building. It is very important to me, and to the neighborhood that we brought music and art back to the building,” Tina said.

COVID has put some delays on the future plans for MT ED. “I have always wanted to work with the Boy and Girl Scouts on their dance/theatre merit badges. We now have the space to do that. Other future plans include a show choir, an improv troupe and an instrumental music program. Plans for the instrumental music program include having a mentor program with our pit band where a student is paired up with a professional pit musician and they work and play together during our live theatre programs,” Tina said. Tina has also been working with the Charlotte Community Association to provide opportunities for her students to do volunteer work in their community. “I think it is really important to get the kids engaged in their community. Activities like beach clean up, gardening, and visiting nursing homes. Teaching them the importance of giving back to the community, and working toward physical and mental health in the process. Everything is dependent on when we get back to our new normal after this virus. Our team is constantly brainstorming ideas to stretch the imagination of what to do to keep the kids engaged, interested and moving forward,” Tina said. Heinz Schamberger (third from right) gathered with his friends and family at the Proclamation Ceremony held by the Town of Greece.

Town Holds Proclamation Ceremony for Heinz Schamberger On February 17, 2021, The Town of Greece held a proclamation ceremony in recognition of Heinz Schamberger and his 40 years of service as a chiropractor in the Town of Greece. Present at the ceremony were Heinz’s family members and his office team. Heinz is originally from the country of Germany. He settled in Rochester, New York in 1964. He attended John Marshall High School, completed his Bachelor’s from the University of Buffalo, attended classes at Rochester Institute of Technology, and obtained his Doctor of Chiropractic degree and his Certificate of Proficiency in X-Ray from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.

In 2004, Heinz was joined in practice by his son, Nicholas. Since 2007, the practice has been located at 105 Canal Landing Boulevard. “Heinz’s vision for his life has always been to serve the Lord and his family, and he has accomplished that through his vocation as a chiropractor. Air: The overlooked ingredient to wellness by Tami Raco Health Coach & Personal Trainer

You can live weeks without food and days without water, but only minutes without air. Yet something so significant to life is something we often take for granted and rarely consider the impact it has on our health and wellbeing. Oxygen breathed through the air supports the body’s metabolic process, helping the body to oxygenate the blood, make use of energy and eliminate waste. If the air quality we breathe is poor these functions can become impaired and can adversely affect health. One of the biggest contributors to poor air quality is pollution. Pollution can come from many things such as emissions, manufacturing, and chemicals. Even the things we purchase and put in our home emit chemicals into the air when they let off gas. A high level of air pollutants can cause respiratory diseases, heart disease, increase risks to certain types of cancers, as well as reduce life expectancy. Air quality is as important to our health as what we eat and our activity level. Living in an area with a longer winter leads us to being indoors more than the summer months. We also end up keeping our windows closed, and the air in our home becomes stagnant from not having fresh air come in through windows. In the region of New York that we live, we are fortunate to typically

have excellent air quality. (See https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/34985.html). We often can go months before we spend significant time outdoors or have our homes open to be ventilated fully with fresh air. Below are some tips to help you ensure your getting fresh air. •Clean with environmentally friendly products ( www.hip2save.com). •Open your windows for 10-15 minutes every few days to ventilate your home. •Remove any mold where there is water or moisture. •Have plenty of green plants (visit this site for some suggestions (www.ecowatch.com). •Invest in a HEPA filter. •Clean vents frequently and change furnace filters often. •Install Carbon Monoxide and Radon detectors. •Turn off electronics when not in use, including turning off the WiFi when not in use. •Get outdoors as much as possible. As Spring approaches and we become extra mindful of fitting in our summer clothes and improving our health, let’s also be mindful of the health of the air that we breath. Pure air, clean water and healthy food are the cornerstones of good health! www.thewellnessministry.com
