Two from Spencerport win highest award Two Spencerport residents were honored with the highest award presented to adult leaders in scouting. Donald Leisten, Ogden-Parma Townline Road and Juanita Ashman, of Coleman Avenue, were among 11 Monroe County scouting leaders who received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award. The awards were presented by Otetiana Council-Boy Scouts of America at the 1981 Leadership Recognition Dinner. Each year Otetiana Council recognizes outstanding Juanita Ashman scouting volunteers with the presentation of the Silver Beaver Award. The award is based on leadership, guidance and devotion to the ideals of scouting and is the highest bestowed on adult scouters. The cub scout leader training chairman for the North Star District, Ashman had served as den leader, den leader coach, unit commissioner and a member of the district’s Cub Scout daycamp staff. She had received the Cub Scout Leaders Training Award, Cub Scout Woodbadge Beads and the District Award of Donald Leisten Merit. Leisten had served as assistant scoutmaster, scoutmaster and troop committeeman with Troop 86 in Brockport. He served as commissioner of the North Star District and had been an active member and advisor in the Order of the Arrow and a leader of four Council Philmont expeditions. Westside News file photos. Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Explorer Scouts from Chili, North Chili, Ogden and Brockport. Some 150 boys had their first Spring Jamboree in Northampton Park. At the end of the two day campout they had a bon fire and gave out awards and put on comedy skits. Westside News file photo by Scott Zarnstorff. Originally appeared May 13, 1980.

Cub Scouts earn religious awards - Seventeen Cub and Webelo Scouts from Packs 275 and 292 in the Chili and Churchville area earned their Religious Emblem Award for Scouting. The Parvuli Dei (Children of God) Emblem is given in special recognition by the Catholic Church to a Cub or Webelo scout for the advancement in religious knowledge and spiritual growth. These cub scouts were from different Catholic churches in the Chili and Churchville area, yet they formed a group to encourage each other in working toward their Religion Emblem for cub scouting. The boys had to do a service project for the church, community or a needy individual. Some of the scouts decided to help clean up the church after mass by picking up misselettes, and depositing trash in the paper container. Other boys worked serving food during a turkey fest for Thanksgiving. Some cub scouts decided to work at a clothing drive for the homeless and needy.
