Growing a Garden to Fight Hunger The number of gardeners donating produce to the Food Shelf has increased over the past seven years. Our clients love the fresh produce, and we love giving them healthy food. We have learned which items are most popular and which are easiest to include in our program. Here are some suggestions for gardener-donors: zucchini squash, yellow summer squash, tomatoes, sweet corn, peppers, onions, potatoes, berries, peaches, pears and apples.

Please remember that if you wouldn’t eat it, our clients probably wouldn’t either.

Volunteer Highlight We often get calls from high school students looking for short term volunteer opportunities, but we have had only a few students willing to make a long-term commitment. Blake Cicero, a senior at Greece Arcadia, has been helping out in the Basket Program since the fall of 2021. Each month he helps assemble the cardboard boxes and has pitched in on sorting and packing.

Blake, who plans to attend the University of Rochester this fall to major in physics, he was accepted to all five colleges he applied to, is the son of David Cicero and Marcia Dlutek.

Clothing Closet News The number of clients visiting the Closet continues to climb as we now let them inside to shop, one at a time. Our inventory is good in most categories, but we have great need of •Children’s summer clothing, sizes 3 and up – especially boy’s clothes sizes 3 to 6 •Sheets and blankets Our Back-to-School Event will be held during the month of August in memory of our Volunteer Angels, Betty Pierce, Patricia Licota, Flossie Hill. We will be distributing new socks and underwear for children and school supplies to clients coming in to shop for their monthly clothing. Please consider donating a package of new children’s underwear or socks.

AAA offers bike safety tips With more people taking advantage of cycling, there’s no better time for a refresher on safety. AAA Western and Central New York has tips for bicyclists and motorists to share the road and keep everyone safe.

According to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), 938 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2020. That’s an increase of 92 deaths over 2019. Bicyclist deaths most often occur between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., and most often in urban areas.

Males are seven times more likely than females to be fatally hit while riding a bicycle.

Bicycles are a legitimate form of transportation and bicyclists are legal drivers of vehicles. Yet a major issue is that many bicyclists feel they are not respected by motorists and must fight for their place on the road. Bicyclists and motorists can both benefit from reviewing the following safety tips.

Tips for Bicyclists: •Follow the same rules of the road as other roadway users, in-

cluding riding in the same direction as traffic and following all the same traffic signs and signals.

•Signal all turns.

•Wear a bicycle helmet every time and on every ride.

•Be visible by wearing bright colors during the day, reflective gear in low light conditions, and use head and tail lights at night.

•Remember that respect is a two-way street. Show motorists the same courtesy that you expect from them.

Tips for Drivers: •Stay alert – avoid all distractions while driving.

•Yield to bicyclists when turning.

•Make a visual check for bicyclists by scanning mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic.

•Slow down and give at least three feet of clearance when passing.

•Never honk your horn at a bicyclist – it could cause them to swerve into traffic or off the roadway and crash.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich As we enter full-blown summer mode, I am excited for all of the events and activities we have planned.

Our Annual Tree Planting Ceremony this year honored David Proud. David G. Proud was born on August 3rd, 1936. He passed away on March 15th, 2019. He was a resident of the Town of Greece for more than 50 years. He was a kind soul, always willing to lend a hand. He was known as being true to himself, his beliefs, and those he served. David was an active member of his community, including serving in the Monroe County Legislature representing the 5th district in the Town of Greece from 1988 until 2001. The tree planted in David’s memory was an Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac. This tree features dark green foliage throughout the season and produces white blossoms in early summer. The tree is located along the Greece Town Campus Walking track on the North end of campus with a monument placed at the base of the tree.

We hosted another successful shredding event this past month!

I am always happy to offer this free and confidential service to Greece residents. We will schedule another event with evening hours in the Fall Season.

The Greece American Legion Post and I were honored to once again co-host the Town of Greece Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony this Memorial Day. The Memorial Day Parade kicked off at 11:00am and featured such participants as Greece Post 468 Color Guard, local legion posts and veteran groups, the Greece Town Board, scout troops, community service departments, musical bands, and many more patriotic participants. Following the parade was the Town of Greece Remembrance Ceremony, held at the Greece Town Campus Pavilion. During the Ceremony, we recognized all those who served our country and paid the ultimate price. We also recognized all in the crowd who had their names engraved on the Gary Beikirch Veterans Memorial Wall this year.

Conflict names were read in remembrance of those who lost their lives serving our country. Our vocalist, Nick Novellin, performed a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem and Greece Post 468 Color Guard performed the Presentation of Colors and the Laying of Wreaths and Gun Salute.

This past month, we brought back the Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Food Truck Rodeo and Summer Concert. This year’s concert featured Zac Brown Tribute Band. Hundreds came out to enjoy the music and have a tasty meal from one of many food trucks participating. Proceeds collected at the event were donated to the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship Fund, which provides the Greece community with the opportunity to recognize a student that regularly upholds exemplary moral values, devotes time and energy into helping serve the Greece community, and consistently displays outstanding leadership skills.

As we celebrate our town’s 200th year anniversary, we have been rolling out details about the Town of Greece Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration, which will be bigger and better than ever as we recognize Greece’s milestone birthday. We will be bringing back the 5k and kids race, family activities, food trucks, concert, and fireworks. This year’s main act is featuring the nationally-renowned Three Dog Night!

Tree Planting Ceremony in Honor of David Proud Every year, in observance of Arbor Day, the Town of Greece plants a tree to both honor a member of the community, and to promote the importance of trees for our environment. The Town of Greece has been named a Tree City USA every year since 1998.

On May 24, 2022, the Town of Greece recognized Arbor Day by planting a tree in memory of David Proud.

The tree is the Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac, which features dark green foliage throughout the season and produces white blossoms in early summer. The tree is located along the Greece Town Campus Walking track on the North end of campus with a monument placed at the base of the tree.

Ingredients 1 (15-ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed 1 garlic clove, minced 1 tablespoon tahini, optional 3 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice ¼ cup water ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground cumin Instructions In a bowl, use a potato masher to mash the garbanzo beans until they are almost smooth.

Stir in the remaining ingredients and mix until well combined.

Watermelon Salsa Makes about 3 cups.

Homemade Hummus

Ingredients 3 cups seeded watermelon cubes 3 tablespoons lime juice ½ teaspoon salt Pinch of black pepper 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil 1 jalapeño, diced Instructions Place all ingredients in a bowl and stir only until well combined.

Serve with tortilla chips and enjoy!

Carrot Rice Pilaf Serves 4 to 6 as a side dish

Ingredients 1½ cups basmati rice 2 tablespoons butter ¾ cup peeled and grated carrot 3½ cups water 1 inch cinnamon stick ½ teaspoon salt Instructions Put the rice into a bowl with some cool water. Swirl the rice around and then drain the rice. Repeat this process 2 or 3 times, until the water is clear.

In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the rice and grated carrots and sauté for 2 minutes.

Add 3½ cups water, the cinnamon stick, and salt. Bring to a boil. Boil, uncovered, for 2 minutes. Reduce the heat to mediumlow and cover.

Cook the rice for about 20 minutes, until all of the liquid has been absorbed. Remove from heat. Let the rice rest for 10 minutes before serving.

No Dog in my Yard

by Barbara Burke Greece resident and author, Tricia DellAnno, released her first book on May 1, 2022. A children’s book entitled “No Dog in my Yard,” tells the true story of DellAnno’s 11 year old son Jonathan’s quest to add a dog to their family. “Our son is a real animal lover, he begged and begged for a dog for ten years. This story is about how he enlisted nine neighborhood dogs to achieve his goal of having a dog of his own,” DellAnno said.

Tricia, and husband John, resisted adding a dog to their family because they both work full time and felt it would be selfish to own a dog that would be home alone all day long, and for the fact that they loved to travel.

They also felt that Jonathan needed to be mature enough to know the responsibilities of dog ownership. Then the pandemic hit, and Tricia found herself working from home.

Millie Like many other families, it seemed the perfect time to grant Jonathan’s wish for a dog. In October of 2020 Millie, a precious Goldendoodle puppy, was added to the family. The DellAnnos were told Millie would grow to be a medium size dog, the truth is that Millie has grown into a large dog, over 50 pounds of relentless energy.

In January of 2022 Tricia DellAnno left her job at Wegmans after 25 years of working in various positions that included Division Human Resource Manager, Leadership and Talent Development Manager and Talent Codie Sourcing Manager. She

holds undergraduate degrees in both Communications and Journalism. “Writing has always been a part of my life and a part of my work at Wegmans, so I have been writing all along, in one form or another. I have always been drawn to children’s literature, Sig and reading books to my son,” she said. DellAnno is now living her life as a full-time author.

“When we added Millie to our family we had no idea the sheer insanity of owning a puppy. Even when I had doubts about the challenges of dog ownership, Jonathan was always pointing out the benefits of Millie. Jonathan is loyal and devoted to her, with unconditional love, and she feels the same about him. book, “No Dog in my Yard,” came from the enthusiastic reactions of friends and family when she related the adventures of Jonathan and the neighborhood dogs.

The characters in the book are all real. The nine dogs; Sig, Lola Lu, Archie, Teddy, Rocco, Reo, Grovie, Codie and Beau are neighborhood dogs living in view outside Rocco of the DellAnno’s window.

The humans in the book are son Jonathan, Tricia and John, DellAnno’s parents Paul and Valerie Hendricks of Gates, and in-laws Cosmo and Maria DellAnno of Chili. Everyone plays a role in the rhyming story that is written to engage both children and adults in the adventures Jonathan encounters on his quest to convince his parents that a dog is the perfect fit for their family.

DellAnno graduated from Greece Olympia High School. When thinking about an illustrator for her book she called a High School friend, Mike Krummhoefener. “After college, Mike went to work at Pixar Animation Studios. When I called him to ask if he would do the illustrations he said his schedule was full, but he knew someone that would be perfect,” DellAnno said. That someone was Jim Pearson.

Pearson has worked as an Illustrator for Advertising and Editorial clients, as a Concept Artist, and an Art Director/Production Designer for animated films and games. Pearson was the Art Director/Production Designer for the animated feature Toy Story 2 and worked as a concept artist on Finding Nemo and The Ant Bully. “Mike introduced us and we immediately clicked. Jim did some sketches and he nailed my vision. His color pallete and his way of portraying the seasons are beautiful. I couldn’t be happi-

er with his work. After talking with Mike, and working with Jim, it reminded me of just how kind people are, they both really extended themselves to help me.”

“No Dog in my Yard” received a warm literary welcome including a 5 star review from Readers’ Favorite. Girl Scouts of Western New York announce Hailey Kuder, as a 2022 Gold Award Girl Scout

Hailey is a member of Troop 60631.

What Hailey said about Girl Scouts Choosing to pursue Girl Scouts was the best decision of my life.

Being part of the many hours of community service and completing my Gold Award Project has helped me to grow as a leader and understand the impact that one person can have on a community.

I will strive every day to continue to represent what the Girl Scout Promise and Law means to me.

Hailey’s Project: Greece Police Precinct #2 Memorial Garden Hailey Kuder For my Gold Award project, I wanted to do something for my community. As an active member of Greece Police Explorers, I knew I really wanted to give back to Greece Police for everything that they do to help protect and serve my community, not to mention honoring the men and women who died in the line of duty. I explored many options, but after talking to my advisor it became clear that the memorial gardens were an eyesore for the Police Officers. The project I chose was to renovate the memorial gardens at Greece Precinct #2.

I developed a plan over several months, consulting with local experts and my advisor to be sure I was hitting the areas of biggest concern. After he gave final approval of the plans, I led a team of volunteers. We removed the old brick walkway and installed a new brick path with a proper base, replaced the existing broken bench with a sustainable metal one, and replaced the broken memorial plaques with engraved stones that will last a lifetime. We also cleaned up all the garden pieces, weeded, and mulched to freshen the space. I spent weeks planning and renovating the space, during that time many community members visiting the local pantry, the park, or starting a shift stopped to encourage us and express their appreciation of the changes.

About the Girl Scout Gold Award The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” A Girl Scout’s project should be something that a girl can be passionate about—in thought, deed, and action that encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. The project should also fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be on-going or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities and she can enlist in the military at a higher starting pay grade.

The Girl Scout Gold Award, the most prestigious award in the world for girls, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers.

The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. The girl then forms a team to act as a support system, including a project advisor close to the issue who is not a troop leader or family member, while she leads the project. The Girl Scout creates a plan to ensure they know what steps they must tackle while working on the project. The Girl Scout submits a proposal for her project to her local Girl Scout council. After acceptance, the girl begins to work through the steps of their plan utilizing the assistance of her support team where necessary.

Lastly, the project is used to educate and inspire others about the cause they are addressing.

Protect your heart in the heat As the temperature rises, so can your risk for suffering health issues like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Doctors recommend using good judgment when it comes to activities outside in the heat, and that you stay hydrated.

During hot weather, it’s important that you take the right precautions: •Watch the clock. It’s best to avoid the outdoors in the early afternoon (about noon to 3 p.m.) because the sun is usually at its strongest, putting you at higher risk for heat-related illnesses.

•Get off on the right foot. You probably sweat the most in your shoes, so choose well-ventilated shoes and look for socks that repel perspiration. Foot powders and antiperspirants can also help with sweat.

•Dress for the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing in breathable fabrics such as cotton, or a newer fabric that repels sweat. Add a hat and/or sunglasses. Before you get started, apply a water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 15, and reapply it every two hours.

•Drink up. Stay hydrated by drinking a few cups of water before, during, and after your exercise. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.

•Take regular breaks. Find some shade or a cool place, stop for a few minutes, hydrate, and start again •Follow the doctor’s orders. If you are a heart patient, over the age of 50, overweight, or just starting an exercise program, be sure to check with your doctor for your best exercise routine.

If you do want to be active during hot weather, doctors say it is alright if the activity is something you are used to, but it is not the time to push yourself.

It’s important to know the signs and symptoms when you may be experiencing too much heat.

Town of Greece Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony The Town of Greece, in conjunction with Greece American Legion Post Number 468, hosted a Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony on Monday, May 30, 2022.

The Memorial Day Parade featured such participants as Greece Post 468 Color Guard, local legion posts and veteran groups, Supervisor Bill Reilich and the Greece Town Council members, scout troops, community service departments, musical bands, and many more patriotic participants.

Following the parade was the Town of Greece Remembrance Ceremony, held at the Greece Town Campus Pavilion. During the Ceremony, Supervisor Bill Reilich and American Legion Post Number 468 Commander Ed Wawrzaszek gave remarks in memory of those who served our country and paid the ultimate price.

Supervisor Reilich also recognized all in the crowd who have had

their names engraved on the Gary Beikirch Veterans Memorial Wall this year. Conflict names were read in remembrance of those who lost their lives serving our country. Vocalist Nick Novellin performed a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem Singers and Greece Post 468 Color Guard performed the Presentation of Colors and the Laying of Wreaths and Gun Salute.

“Since the dedication of our Veteran’s Memorial Wall on May 31, 1999, we have added thousands of names to the wall,” said Supervisor Bill Reilich. “The Town of Greece is honored to have so many brave men and women who have fought for our freedom and our great Nation. It is my privilege to pay tribute to all Greece residents, and all of our military men and women throughout our country, who so selflessly served our nation.”

Keep your garden buzzin’

by Kristina Gabalski There’s something very special about walking through the garden on summer mornings. The bees and other pollinators are busy at work in the warm sunshine gorging themselves on nectar and moving pollen from flower to flower making things like tomatoes, summer squash, and pumpkins possible. If your garden is filled with the buzzing of bees, it is a good sign; it means that you have created a welcoming environment for them.

According to Cornell Cooperative Extension Putnam County, New York State is home to more than 450 native bee species.

Imported honeybees join native bees in pollinating your garden, agricultural crops, and wildflowers. Most gardeners are familiar with honeybees and the challenges they have faced in recent years from colony collapse disorder, as well as the potential impacts on food supply.

New York State has established an interagency task force on pollinators, and one of its goals is enhancing pollinator habitat in our state. If you would like to encourage and support an abundance of pollinators and species diversity in your habitat, there are many things you can do.

Just like you, pollinators need shelter. Native bees do not live in hives and need places like dead wood and access to soil for a home. Brush piles, woodpiles, and some exposed undisturbed soil can create a refuge for native bees, CCE Putnam says.

If you would like something more aesthetically pleasing, you can make a decorative wattle fence of bent twigs. Rustic arbors and split rail fences can also provide shelter. You want something

that will persist through the season. Varying the types of structures can attract a diversity of species to your garden.

Create an assorted buffet for the bees. That means flowers of varying sizes. Plants in the mint family and dill, for example, produce many small flowers with lots of nectar.

Finally, be knowledgable about using pesticides. Flowers are a food source for bees and other pollinators, and you don’t want to serve them poison. Use pesticides wisely. CCE Putnam advises to refrain from spraying flowering plants. If you have to spray, use a low-residual pesticide and spray when bees are not active.

Know the lifecycle of the pest so that you can time treatment effectively. Choose the least toxic pesticide with the shortest residual activity to get the job done. If you are using pesticides with systemic or long residual action, you may want to remove blooms from plants, and remember some systematic pesticides may be active in a plant for years.

Free web-based support platform being provided for family caregivers in NYS The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) and Association on Aging in New York (AgingNY) have partnered with Trualta to offer Trualta’s web-based caregiver education and support platform at no cost to any unpaid caregiver in New York State.

Funding for this initiative is supported in the Fiscal Year 2023 state budget through NYSOFA programs to address social isolation and expand caregiver supports.

Trualta’s evidence-based caregiver training and support platform helps families build skills to manage care at home for loved ones of any age. It also connects to local resources and support services by delivering personalized education, training, and information links.

New Yorkers can access the service at https://newyork-caregivers.com. Once registered, caregivers can select personalized training and track their progress on topics like self-care, stroke recovery, dementia care, medication management, and more. Users can log-in from any computer, tablet, or smartphone.

There are an estimated 4.1 million caregivers in New York State who provide 2.68 billion hours of unpaid care. Sixty-one percent worry about caring for a loved one and 70 percent reported at least one mental health symptom during the pandemic. Trualta teaches critical skills to reduce caregiver stress levels and increase confidence in one’s caregiving abilities.

A 2021 study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease Reports found a high rate of retention and engagement among caregiv-

ers who used the Trualta platform to support their care for loved ones with dementia: 84 percent of participants reported using at least one skill they learned from Trualta. More than half of the caregivers (56 percent) reported allocating more time for selfcare after using Trualta. Caregiver burden scores also appeared to decrease after using Trualta for 30 days.

NYSOFA Director Greg Olsen said, “Family, friends and neighbors provide a range of unpaid supports for loved ones at home, including often complex or intensive tasks for family members who have chronic conditions like dementia or diabetes. This labor of love can be all-consuming, but you are not alone. Our partnership with Trualta offers an evidence-based support platform statewide, empowering unpaid caregivers with the knowledge and skills training necessary to reduce anxiety and stress while improving outcomes in the care of loved ones. Equally important is the connection it provides to local programs and services for help if needed.”

He added, “NYSOFA, our county office for aging partners, and their networks deliver many community-based services to help individuals age in place, including support groups, respite, social adult day programs, and more. On-demand platforms like Trualta help extend our reach, bringing vital information and guidance into the homes of more New Yorkers so that nobody faces the struggle of caregiving alone.”

Kids Tree Planting Program The Kiwanis Club of Greece sponsored the K-Kids at English Village Elementary. This latest 6-week session was led by Kiwanians Karen Mager, Ron Keiser, Georgie Donnelly and Tina Warren.

The session ended with a tree planting. The tree was donated by Kiwanis Club of Greece, with each child being able to also plant flowers in a pot and take them home to give to a loved one. The
