Grand Opening of New Greece Public Library Children’s Center On July 8, 2021, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich was joined by Deputy Supervisor Michelle Marini, Greece Town Board Members Mike Barry, Mike Bloomer, Bill Murphy, and Diana Christodaro, Greece Receiver of Taxes Andrew Conlon, State Assemblyman Joshua Jensen, Greece Public Library Director Cassie Guthrie, Assistant Director Keith Suhr, and Children’s Librarian Jen Pressier for the official Grand Opening of the new Greece Public Library Children’s Center.

Also in attendance for the Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony were members of the Library Board and members of the construction team, including Construction Manager John Radesi from Christa Construction; architects Emily Connors and Peter Wehner from Passero Associates; General Contractor, DiPasquale Construction Company; Electrical Work, Mylerson Electric, and Plumbing/ HVAC, Landry Mechanical.

This project is a culmination of several months of planning to create a new state-of-the-art space for young residents.

Between 2017 and 2019, there were over 60,000 attendees of Children’s Programs at the Library and an additional 15,000 attendees of our early literacy programs. Additionally, our Summer Reading program saw a 21% increase in enrollment. In 2019 – nearly 30% of all materials borrowed were from the Children’s Room.

These figures made it very easy to evaluate that we needed more dedicated space for our youngest patrons.

Our former Children’s space was only 3,000 sq. feet, very small when you look at the number of little readers we welcome each year. As a result of several surveys and customer input, we gathered a great deal of data that helped us know that this was the right direction to take.

With careful planning and budgeting, the entire expansion was

paid for in cash. There was no borrowing and no increased tax burdens placed on our residents.

“Our library is ever growing and ever changing as we started to track the popularity of our programs and the requests of our community. This is the road map we take, we listen to requests made and typically we survey our residents to help us decide which direction to take,” said Supervisor Reilich. “We are always looking for ways to bring new and innovative amenities to our community. This project is one of the many brought forth so the residents of Greece, both young and old, can stay close to home and enjoy all that we have to offer in Greece. I am so happy to be able to open this space to the entire community, and I know it will be enjoyed by everyone.”

The Children’s Library Expansion named “Story Garden” is located in the Greece Public Library Main Branch, 2 Vince Tofany Boulevard. The expansion includes approximately 7,000 sq. feet of additional space bringing the total space to 10,125 sq. feet dedicated to our youngest patrons. New features include a covered outdoor children’s story time patio, a rotunda play area complete with a “grocery store” checkout station, a planting garden, a play castle and a kitchen and chairs for serving up some make believe meals. The mezzanine features a life size interactive tree with a magical fairy ball delivery system and the upper level hosts a magnetic “gear” display and ball path.

The entrance boosts a life size “lite brite,” a lit up play surface, curved seating, butterfly wings for photographing our baby bugs graduates and many dedicated areas are positioned throughout for children to settle in and enjoy a good read. The entire space features energy efficient LED lighting, a fully dedicated children’s bathroom with kid sized amenities, a new story and craft room with radiant floor heating, centrally located staff offices, skylights and a new children’s librarian reference desk.

Camping reservations open for the New York State Fair Reservations for full-service camping in the Empire RV Park during the Great New York State Fair are now open. Reservations can be made via the Fair’s site at Reserve America. The Empire RV Park is a 303-space campground on the Fairgrounds next to the Midway, which includes water, sewer, and electric service. Campers need to supply their own hookups to those services. The rental price of $830 includes two 18-day admission wristbands and parking for one vehicle. A permit for a second vehicle can be purchased separately. There is a $7.25 fee added to the reservation, which covers 23 days, from Sunday, August 15 to Labor Day, September 6.

Fair Director Troy Waffner said, “People love to camp at the Fair.

They’re Fair fans, but they’re also fans of having a good time with other people who enjoy camping. Anyone interested in camping in the Empire RV Park should get a reservation quickly because space always sells out.”

Complete information on full-service camping in the Empire RV Park can be found at https://nysfair.ny.gov/your-visit/plan-yourtrip/fair-rv-parking/. Reservations will not be taken after August 6.

For those seeking a shorter camping stay, the Fair offers daily camping in the Pink parking lot across from the Fairgrounds. People can purchase daily camping reservations starting July 15. Daily camping does not include electric, water, or sewer service. Campers may use their own generators, sewage dumping stations are provided, and restrooms with showers are available. The cost is $25.68 per night for a camper and vehicle and does not include admission to the Fair.

Historic Marker in Koda Vista Neighborhood Unveiled On July 15, 2021, the official unveiling ceremony of a historic marker in the Koda Vista neighborhood was held.

The Koda Vista neighborhood consists of around 250 homes in the southeast corner of Greece with a history spanning over ninety years. The original streets were planned by the Kodak Employees Realty Corporation in the mid1920s and were settled primarily by Kodak Employees. In 1928, sixty of the early residents formed Koda Vista Community Association (KVCA). The neighborhood expanded after World War II and was part of the dramatic housing and population increase experienced town-wide. The Koda Vista neighborhood is unique in its early history and the variety of architectural styles, which can still be seen today. The unveiling recognizes what the Koda Vista neighborhood represents, a rich history of strength and unity in the community.

“I was proud to unveil a historic marker recognizing the historical significance of the Koda Vista neighborhood today,” said Supervisor Bill Reilich. “Special thanks to Keith Suhr for secur-

ing the grant that helped make this historic marker installation possible and to Councilman Mike Bloomer, who represents the residents of this neighborhood.”

Rhythm Restoration and Your Health

by Tami Raco Health Coach and Personal Trainer Just as our world has seasons, our body has its own rhythm and cycles. Although many of us do not think much about the natural rhythm of our body, it is something worth understanding. Our body has genes that are called “clocked genes” that need to synchronize in the body with a rhythm. This rhythm affects everything ranging from our immune system to our organ function, liver, heart, digestion and brain health. With our hectic schedules, shift work and advanced technology keeping our body in its natural circadian rhythm can be challenging. It important to be mindful of these cycles and consider lifestyle changes to restore natural rhythm to help improve over health and well being. When we mess with mother nature by disrupting our circadian rhythm, our body gets out of sync. Some common signs of an out of sync body are elevated adrenal function, increased cholesterol and body fat and insulin resistance.

Here are a few tips to help you get your rhythm restored.

Light: It is very important to get enough natural light during your day. It affects our rhythm at the start of the day and provides a great opportunity to get the body on track. Natural light that is received through the eye sends signals to the brain that helps regulate the body’s clock. It will help improve your energy and focus, as well as help set your melatonin in sync to have a good nights sleep.

Try to get 5-10 minutes of exposure to natural light within the first 30 minutes of waking. Going out for a morning walk shortly after waking is a great way to get the light.

Food timing: When you eat has a direct impact on your daily rhythm. A great rule of thumb is to not eat when you should be sleeping. Have a routine and try to eat regularly according to your routine. Reduce your calories as the day goes on, especially avoid eating at least a few hours prior to bedtime. Stop caffeine six hours before bedtime.

Reduce light disturbances: Blue light (cell phone, laptop, tablet, tv screens) shuts down our bodies natural melatonin production.

Melatonin is a hormone that your body makes to help you feel sleepy and get healthy sleep. Melatonin disruptions cause sleep disturbances. Turn off electronics 1-2 hours before bed. Read a book or take a walk outside at dark. Limit TV in the later hours. Use blue blocker glasses if you need to use your phone in the evening.

Don’t check your phone after you go to bed. Turn off notifications.

Sleep in a cool room: The human body sleeps better in cool temperatures. If you look at nature you will see that the nights cool down and that is when most of nature sleeps. Using a cooling mat or reducing your bedroom temperature at night will help ensure a better night’s rest. Look at nature, the temperature goes down at night. Cooler rooms help the circadian rhythm so that you can sleep better. Use melatonin only if necessary. Ask for your physician to test for melatonin levels before beginning.

Sandy Creek Mining Sluice now open at Brightly’s Farm Market

by Tami Raco The Brightlys had their first experience mining for gems and fool’s gold when they took their grandchildren to the Perry Drive-In. The family had so much fun together, and Betsy Brightly loved how interactive it was for both the children and adults. “What a great family activity it was to do together,” she said. This experience prompted the Brightlys to look into having a Sandy Creek Mining Sluice at their farm market in Hamlin.

The Christian, family-owned business located in Ohio builds and supplies the mining equipment and provides the panning supplies. Although it was an investment, Dean and Betsy Brightly felt it was a worthwhile addition to be able to provide this rewarding opportunity where families can have a fun, enriching activity to do and enjoy their time together, especially after such a challenging and isolating time during the pandemic.

The Mining Sluice, designed to look like an old farm water tower, arrived at Brightly’s Farm Market at the end of June, and they held a grand opening of the attraction on July 3. It is great for children and adults of all ages. The cost starts at $6 for a bag of sand that the child takes to the sluice. They use a wooden screen and shake it into the water, searching for all sorts of treasures. More than 50 items can be mined for, including fool’s gold,

gemstones, shark’s teeth, and fossils, which can be collected or made into jewelry. In addition to the sluice, Brightly’s serves homemade lunches, has a playground, a bakery, ice cream, and slushies.

Adults can even enjoy a wine slushy from the Hunt Country tasting room located at the farm.

The grand opening brought hundreds of people from across the region. “There was not one unhappy face,” Betsy A young girl examines the treasures she said. When she looked at found. the crowd, she knew she made the right decision in bringing this to the area. “It’s the simple things in life we can appreciate, like seeing families enjoying their time together.”

Betsy said, “We are planning to offer birthday parties, special event packages, and homeschool opportunities in the future.”

Diagnosing vegetable garden problems

Gardeners need expert observation skills. As the growing season progresses, gardeners should watch their plants closely every day. Disease and insect issues constantly arise, and being able to diagnose common problems yourself as soon as possible can help fight the spread of disease and insect damage and ensure a bountiful harvest.

According to Cornell Cooperative Extension, the first important step in plant diagnostics is to know what is normal for the plants you grow. Be familiar with the typical appearance of the plant as well as the potential insects and diseases that can affect it. Symptoms of disease and insect damage are defined as changes in plant growth or appearance in response to one or more damaging factors.

Symptoms include such things as stunting, malformation of leaves, failure of fruits and flowers to develop, shoot or leaf blights, leaf spots, wilts, dieback of the entire plant, and mosaic patterns of light and dark green on leaves, or altered coloration in leaves and flowers.

If symptoms are occurring in 100 percent of your plants, you may have poor soil conditions or adverse climatic factors such as cold or drought. If you notice a damage pattern that is uniform on an individual plant or over an affected area, it is usually due to abiotic or non-living factors like the improper use of herbicides.

Other abiotic environmental factors include things like rain, hail, and prevailing winds.

If you see symptoms that start in one area of the plant and then spread slowly to other areas of the plant, and the severity of the symptoms changes over time, the problem is likely caused by biotic (living factors) such as disease, insects, or mammals.

Symptoms are considered to be either primary or secondary.

As an example, Cornell Cooperative Extension explains that decayed roots on a tree may be a primary symptom, while a secondary symptom may be the tree toppling over.

Keep a close eye on your vegetable garden and know the threats to your crops so that you can maintain the health of plants and effectively fight disease and insect problems. Photo by Kristina Gabalski

Distinct from symptoms, signs are evidence of the damaging factor. For example, you may be able to see fungal spores causing the disease on your plants or the actual insects or mite webbing that are causing plant damage. Once a plant problem is diagnosed, you are ready to begin recommended treatments.

There are many ways to help manage disease in your vegetable garden. Crop rotation helps to fight pathogen buildup and insect infestation that can happen when the same crop is continuously planted in the same location. The same type of vegetable or close relative should only be grown in the same soil once every three to five years. Look for disease-resistant varieties when purchasing seeds or transplants. Seed catalogs typically list the resistant traits of vegetable varieties.

Water properly to keep your plants healthy. Constantly wet soils and water on foliage contribute to foliar diseases. Encourage a healthy root system by watering deeply less frequently. A layer of mulch will help to maintain uniform soil moisture and reduce problems like blossom end rot in tomatoes and peppers.

I was very excited to bring back our beloved Town of Greece Old Fashioned 4th of July Event this year! The day kicked off with the Town of Greece Freedom Run 5k and Super Hero Sprint for kids. Evening festivities picked up with the opening several food trucks. Familyfriendly and children’s activities were in full swing as kids enjoyed inflatables, games, and were treated to a free book from the Library Book Mobile “Free Books for Kids” Cart! We had two bands perform: Nik and the Nice Guys and Gary Lewis and Playboys. Both bands drew a great crowd, with people singing along and dancing to the music! The huge celebration ended with a bang – literally!

This past month, we officially opened the much-anticipated new Greece Public Library Children’s Center! This project is a culmination of several months of planning to create a new state-ofthe-art space for our young residents. Our library is ever growing and ever changing as we started to track the popularity of our programs and the requests of our community. This is the road map we take, we listen to requests made and typically we survey our residents to help us decide which direction to take. We are

This project is one of the many that my team and I have brought forth so the residents of Greece, both young and old, can stay close to home and enjoy all that we have to offer in Greece. The Children’s Library Expansion named the “Story Garden” is located in the Greece Public Library Main Branch at 2 Vince Tofany Boulevard, and includes approximately 7,000 square feet of expanded space, bringing the total space to 10,125 square feet dedicated to our youngest patrons. New features include a covered outdoor children’s story time patio, a rotunda play area complete with a “grocery store” checkout station, a planting garden, a play castle and a kitchen and chairs for serving up some make believe meals. The mezzazine features a life size interactive tree with a magical fairy ball delivery system and the upper level hosts a magnetic “gear” display and ball path. The entrance boosts a life size “lite brite” a lit up play surface, curved seating, butterfly wings for photographing our baby bugs graduates and many dedicated areas are positioned throughout for children to settle in and enjoy a good read. The entire space features energy efficient LED lighting, a fully dedicated children’s bathroom with kid sized amenities, a new story and craft room with radiant floor heating, centrally located staff offices, skylights and a new children’s librarian reference desk.

St. George’s hosting Flea Market and Apple Sausage Sale On Saturday, August 14, St. George’s Episcopal Church, located at 635 Old Wilder Road in Hilton, will be hosting a Flea Market and selling their famous Apple Sausage sandwiches. “This is a perfect time to serve the community with an event as well as host a fundraising opportunity,” said Reverend Greg Kremer.

Lewis lives in suburban Rochester and said he “became domestic” during his time at home. “I spent all my time at home. We didn’t go anywhere. I became very domestic, doing laundry, chopping wood and cutting the grass.

There was nothing you could do about it. I just accepted the fact that we couldn’t work, and knew that it wouldn’t last forever,” Lewis said.

Since Lewis couldn’t rehearse with the band they met occasionally over Zoom. Gary Lewis and the Playboys performed their first concert after the pandemic on June 25 in Las Vegas. “The audience was great. We all just couldn’t wait for music to happen again. It was an almost full house and we had great fun,” Lewis said.

“During the pandemic I just did what I had to do.

I am lucky because I have royalties coming in, and that got us through. There is a reason why the pandemic happened, and there is a reason why it is over, and everything will be OK,” Lewis said.

Cove, a once-in-a-lifetime dog

They say you only get one great dog in your lifetime, and in my case, that is true.

I’ve owned over a dozen hunting dogs in my life, and none could hold a dog biscuit to my ol’ yellow Lab, Cove. He is our oncein-a-lifetime dog, named after my cardiologist, Doctor Christopher Cove, who, along with some amazing EMTs, saved my life one hot July 4th. It was 12 years ago that the doctor placed a stent in my left anterior descending artery after I’d gone into full cardiac arrest while washing my truck on a rare 4th at home. It only took five minutes for the Henrietta Ambulance EMTs to arrive. One week earlier, I had been fishing in the Thousand Islands. Had it hit me then, I would have ended up deader than a bloated skunk on the side of 490. There is no doubt in my mind my fishing buddies would have waited until the bass stopped biting before taking me to shore and then emptying my tackle box of all my good lures before calling 911.

My sister Betsy drove to Wildrose Kennels in Mississippi to pick up Cove only a few weeks after my “widow maker.” For some reason, my wife would not let me leave home to make the 14-hour drive.

Cove showed up at our doorstep at eight weeks of age, full of curiosity and zero fear. He was cuter than a baby panda sneezing, as only a yellow Lab pup can be.

From that minute on, Cove and I have been closer than two coats of paint. He is co-founder of my business T&C Goose Wrangler (the C standing for Cove, of course), where we worked together for ten years chasing geese off golf courses and school sports fields before dysplasia of both front elbows kept him from climbing in and out of the backseat of my truck. Against his wishes, he had to retire.

Cove’s love of chasing geese was almost too strong as, on one occasion, he swam out of sight on Chaumont Bay chasing a wounded goose. My son Joel and I had been goose hunting on the bay and shot a goose that appeared lifeless, floating on the water. When Cove swam up to the goose, his head popped up, and he started swimming away with Cove so close that we could not make a safe finishing shot. We yelled and shot the guns in the air, hoping to turn Cove around, but he was just too close to that bird to care about anything else but catching that goose. All we had was a canoe, and by the time Joel dragged it out of the cattails where we had hidden it, Cove was already out of sight. You talk about panic; it was as if one of my grandkids was swimming out of sight. It was by a minor miracle that I had some friends up there fishing, and I was able to call them. They responded quickly and soon found Cove swimming out in the middle of the large bay, the goose nowhere to be seen. They hoisted him into the boat and brought him back. He was no worse for wear, but I was a nervous wreck. I’m sure he would not have drowned – dogs rarely do, especially Labs – but where he would have made it to shore is anybody’s guess.

On our many long drives to Saskatchewan on hunting trips, my buddies riding with me would often ask, “Is Cove still alive

back there?” as he lay in the backseat, not making a peep for hours. That was until the guns came out, then he knew it was game time!

He is by far the smartest dog I have ever owned, needing little training to do what he did naturally. I could count on two hands how many times I have had to raise my voice at my ol’ buddy, and after I did, I always felt worse for it. I could go on for hours talking about the hundreds of great waterfowl retrieves he has made over the years, some of his best in Lake Ontario in fourfoot waves in late November.

Cove is now twelve years old and shuffles around like the old gentleman he is. His front elbows are in such bad shape that even a visit to Cornell University couldn’t help. Still, you never hear a groan out of him. His stoic nature is constantly commented on by the various veterinarians who have analyzed him over the years.

Although getting around is now a struggle, his eyes are clear, and his appetite is still as ferocious as a grizzly. When the grandkids are here and eating anything, he shadows their every step, knowing something tasty will drop at any minute. Because of his rusty joints, he plops down in the worst spots possible such as the middle of the kitchen or dining room, creating this large yellow fur-shedding roadblock. We all step around him or, in the case of the grandkids, literally crawl right over him, knowing it would take him five minutes to get to his feet and move. He just wags his tail, glad that his family is so close.

As much as I hate to think about it, I know his days are numbered. I wanted to write this now while Cove is still with us for a couple of reasons. The first one being that I know once he goes, I will be emotionally unable to even spell his name for a long time.

The second is to let him know while he’s here how much we love him and to thank him for bringing his unconditional love into our lives, and I believe possibly saving mine.

I hope when Cove reads this online or possibly in print over his morning scoop of Blue Buffalo, he will know how much we love the one-and-only greatest dog of our lives.

Celebrating the Town of Greece Bicentennial To celebrate the upcoming Bicentennial of the Town of Greece in 2022, the Greece Historical Society (GHS) is planning to honor the pioneer families who settled in Greece and have called it home for generations.

GHS plans to publish a series of books with stories written by the descendants of the pioneer families who settled here during the first fifty years, 1822-1872.

This Bicentennial project will be published in November 2021.

The deadline for submissions is July 31, 2021. Subsequent volumes may be added and published so as to include as many families as can be documented.

The publication will include biographical stories and photos featuring not only the more familiar families, but also those who are less well known or who have never been featured in past publications. Each family vignette will feature a photo and story highlighting their contributions to Town history.

Whether you are just starting out or you already are our family’s historian, help the Greece Historical Society to preserve your family’s legacy for future generations. Every family has a story to tell and we want to hear yours. The story of the town also includes early Charlotte which was incorporated as a Village in the Town of Greece in 1869. Greece was part of the Town of Gates which was in Northampton, which in 1820 had only 420 house-holds. By 1870, the number of inhabitants in the Town of Greece had increased to 4,314 individuals!

The Ridge Road Fire District Awarded International Accreditation Status for Fourth Cycle

The Ridge Road Fire District, Greece, NY, has received Accredited Agency status from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) for meeting the criteria established through the CFAI’s voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program.

The Ridge Road Fire District is only one of approximately 250 fire departments in the world to achieve Internationally Accredited Agency status with the CFAI and the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Inc. (CPSE). This is the district’s fourth time achieving accreditation status. The district first achieved Accreditation status in 2004, becoming the first agency in New York State. Currently, the district is one of only three departments in New York State to have achieved accreditation status.

CFAI is dedicated to assisting the fire and emergency service agencies throughout the world in achieving excellence through self-assessment and accreditation in order to provide continuous quality improvement and the enhancement of service delivery to their communities. The CFAI process is voluntary and provides an agency with an improvement model to assess their service delivery and performance internally and then works with a team of peers from other agencies to evaluate their completed selfassessment.

Commissioner Eric Stoerger, Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners for the Ridge Road Fire District stated that the agency’s achievement of Accredited Agency status “demonstrates the commitment of our agency to provide the highest quality of service to our community.”

Commissioner Stoerger added, “We have also been able to use the Commission on Fire Accreditation International’s process as a proactive mechanism to plan for the future of this agency and locate areas where we can improve on the quality of the services we provide.”

Chief Steve Johnson, Chief of the Ridge Road Fire District stated, “Being awarded accreditation status is the culmination of 5 years of hard work and reflects the district’s commitment to continuous improvement as well as assuring our community that we are providing the best and safest response to all emergencies.”

The Chief added, “Our Community Outreach Programs were specifically cited as a best practice and received strong praise from the CFAI Peer Team Assessors.”

The Ridge Road Fire District is an Internationally Accredited, Insurance Service (ISO) Class 2 agency that protects approximately 16 square miles in the southern portion of the Town of Greece, NY. The district responds to more than 6,000 calls a year providing fire, rescue, emergency medical, and hazardous material responses. In addition to responding to emergencies, the district provides community outreach and public education programs including CPR, fire prevention, and child passenger safety programs.

Arbor Day Foundation Names the Town of Greece Tree City USA The Town of Greece was named a 2020 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the United States Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

The Town of Greece achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements which include a tree board, a treecare ordinance, an annual community forestry budget and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
