New Greece Chief of Police - Andrew Forsythe

by Tami Raco New Greece Police Chief Andrew Forsythe grew up on Long Island and first came to this area in the late 80s to study Criminal Justice at SUNY Brockport. “I always wanted to be a police officer since I was five years old,” said Forsythe. Chief Forsythe’s Uncle was a police officer, and this is what planted the seed of his earliest desire to pursue a career in law enforcement. Upon graduating from college, Forsythe took the Monroe County Sheriff exam before returning to his hometown on Long Island where his parents, older sister and twin sister lived. In 1991, he was hired part-time by the Monroe County Sheriff Office (MCSO) as a Parks Deputy. Greece 200th Anniversary Logo Contest Announced The Town of Greece is inviting Greece Town residents to submit original renderings for the official logo to be used as preparations begin to celebrate the Town’s 200th Birthday. March 22, 2022 marks the two-hundred-year anniversary of the Town of Greece. Originally called Northampton, the town was named after the country of Greece, which was fighting a war of independence from Turkish rule. Planning for this historic bicentennial celebration has already begun, as the Town looks forward to celebrating Greece’s rich history as one of the largest municipalities in New York State. To officially kick things off, this Logo design contest opportunity is open to all Greece residents and businesses who would like to submit a logo idea which, if selected as the finalist, will be used on all official literature, documentation and social media relating to the Town’s plan to celebrate this historic event. “We are anxious to engage our community in this historic milestone. We have so many events that will delight our community as we gather together to celebrate what makes our town so unique,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said. In the upcoming months, the Town will begin to organize activities and events all in honor of the 200th birthday celebration. There will be many opportunities for members of the community to participate in the planning and development of what will be nearly a year-long celebration which will kick off in 2022. Greece residents wishing to submit their logo idea can email their design to Greece2022@greeceny.gov. Entries will be accepted until March 25th, at which time a selection will be made and the logo revealed to the community. Provided Information

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich Although we have had a relatively mild winter overall, these past few weeks have brought some real New York weather our way! Just a reminder that our Winter Parking Ordinance is in effect through April 15, midnight – 8:00am. Until this time, please do not park on any Town roads or the grass on right-ofways. This is to make plowing and salting of dedicated Town streets safer and more effective, and to cut the cost of snow removal. I am excited to announce that the Town of Greece has partnered with Endless Highway, Inc. to provide amenities and opportunities for our youth with disabilities. We are excited to help pave the way for a playground that is not only accessible, but one that is inclusive. Inclusive play is a powerful experience that impacts childhood development, family bonding, and social perspectives. Our project, Build to Include, will build something in Greece that will transform experiences for kids and families of all ages and abilities. Greece News February/March 2021 17 roe County Sheriff’s Office where he was a member from 1991 until 2017. This position included the oversight of all day-to-day operations and four bureaus within the Sheriff’s Office. This service included the handling of a $150 million budget and the oversight of approximately 1,100 employees. Prior to him serving as Undersheriff, he gained valuable experience within the Sheriff’s Office. He served as Chief Deputy of the Police Bureau, Captain of Zone C, Captain of Criminal Investigation Section, and Unit Commander of the Internal Affairs Unit. Drew’s experience with strategic partnerships, program development, tactical deployment, program innovation, and community relations will all be valuable tools that he will bring to the table as the next Chief of Police in the Town of Greece. The Town Board and I have the utmost of confidence in his ability to serve our community and to help navigate the new challenges that are being faced throughout our Country. Of Note, in December of 2017, Drew earned the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office highest honor, The Purple Heart Medal, for injuries sustained and service above and beyond the call of duty. This is the model of the selfless service that we believe personifies the individual who should lead our department. This past month, I was honored to hold a proclamation ceremony in recognition of Greece resident Carlie Cuff. On Wednesday, January 13, 2021, Carlie spent the day assisting individuals who slipped on the ice. Carlie’s neighbors, Jeff and Debbie, both slipped on the ice in their driveway that morning. Jeff hit his head and Debbie broke her wrist. They called Carlie, a former EMT, who immediately came over and helped Jeff with his head wound and put a splint on Debbie’s broken wrist. While driving both Jeff and Debbie to Urgent Care, Carlie stopped to help another individual who had slipped on the ice in their driveway. This man was in his 90’s, lived alone, and had smashed his knee falling. Carlie gave the man his coat, found a family member to call, and then called 911 and stayed with the man until the ambulance and fire truck arrived. After Jeff and Debbie were finished with Urgent Care, Carlie picked them up and drove them home. That evening, Carlie also drove Debbie to and from the doctor’s office so her wrist could be addressed. I was proud to acknowledge Carlie and recognize his outstanding compassion. Our Town is proud to have residents like Carlie, who bring more care and kindness to the world. As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other Town-related matters. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit our website. an online Letter of Intent to verify primary sources by Monday, March 1, 2021. Primary source documentation is necessary to support the text on a marker. The final application deadline is Monday, April 9, 2021. Healthy Recipes for Families Turkey Quinoa Meatloaf Ingredients 1/3 cup quinoa, rinsed 2/3 cup water or chicken stock 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 carrot, grated 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 lbs. ground turkey 2 tbsp. tomato paste 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. onion powder 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 2 eggs 2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper 2 tbsp. brown sugar 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

Directions 1. Bring the quinoa and water or chicken stock to a boil in a saucepan over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the quinoa is tender, and the water has been absorbed, about 15 to 20 minutes. Set aside to cool. 2. Heat an oven to 350° F. 3. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in the onion, carrot and bell pepper, sauté until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute; remove from heat to cool. 4. In a large bowl, stir the turkey, cooked quinoa, cooked veg-

gies, tomato paste, cayenne, onion and garlic powder, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire, eggs, salt, and pepper until well combined. The mixture will be very moist. Shape into a loaf on a parchment or foil lined rimmed baking sheet. 5. Combine the brown sugar and 2 teaspoons Worcestershire in a small bowl. Rub the paste over the top of the meatloaf. 6. Bake in the preheated oven until no longer pink in the center, about 50 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 160° F. Let the meatloaf cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Lose the Bat Wings! by Personal Trainer and Health & Nutrition Coach Tami Raco www.thewellnessministry.com One of the most common trouble spot that I hear women complain about is their “bat wings” aka the fat on the back of their arms. Due to hormones, especially as we age, women have a tendency to store more fat in common trouble spot areas, one of those areas is the upper arm. Genetics and hormones can play a big part in storing fat in the upper arms. To change the composition of the arms and lose the bat wings we need to drop body fat AND increase lean muscle tissue with weight training. First: Change your diet! Reduce your carbs especially the processed ones. Eliminate added sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Increase your protein and add some healthy fats like avocado and olive oil. Focus on filling your plate with a healthy array of plant-based foods, some protein and healthy fats. Lastly do not starve yourself! Second: Exercise with Weights! As much as you might want to only focus on your trouble areas (like the flabby arms) it is important you train your entire body. Increasing lean muscle tissue will increase your metabolism and help keep your body fat in a healthy range. Here are two exercises that you can add to your full body weight training workout to really target those bat wings and help turn them into sculpted arms: Tricep Dips- from a bench position your hands shoulder width apart behind you on the bench. Slide your butt off the bench, with legs extended in front of you and feet on the floor. Slowly lower yourself towards the ground until your elbows are bent to a 90-degree angle. Pause for a second then push yourself back up to a straighter arm. Give the triceps a squeeze at the top of the movement. Repeat 12-15 times and do this twice. Overhead Triceps Extension- Standing feet shoulder width apart, grasp a dumbbell with both hands. (Start with 5 lbs. and work your way up according to your strength). Raise the dumbbell straight up over your head with arms straight up towards the ceiling. Slowly lower the dumbbell behind your head until your elbows are bent to a 90-degree angle. Hold for a second and return to the starting position. Repeat 12-15 times and do this twice. Always check with your physician before you begin a diet or an exercise program.

NYS Canal Corporation issues opening statement The New York State Canal system has been, and continues to be, a significant driver of economic development for upstate communities and a valuable resource for recreation. As the 2021 navigation season approaches, the Canal Corporation is actively engaging with a wide range of local stakeholders across New York who rely on the waterway to identify their needs. The Canal Corporation is also assessing and addressing portions of the system’s aging infrastructure. These projects include undertaking efforts to optimize operation of the locks and lift bridges based on usage data when the Canal system opens this spring. As in previous years, the Canal system is projected to operate mid-May through mid-October and no changes are expected to the normal hours of operation. In addition, New York State’s iconic Erie Canal is not being renamed. The Erie Canal will remain the Erie Canal just as it has been for two centuries. Gardening for the birds by Kristina Gabalski February is here, and that means the Great Backyard Bird Count. This year’s event, hosted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada, took place from February 12 through 15. People all over the world participated, watching and counting as many birds as they could find and reported them to Cornell. The Great Backyard Bird Count began in 1998 and was the first online citizen science project to collect data on wild birds and display results in near real-time, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology says. If you enjoy watching and feeding birds, there are many ways to encourage them to take up residence near your home. Birds are amazing creatures, and their presence in your landscape is a sign that your garden is a healthy place. Songbirds provide beautiful music during the summer months and help to brighten the long winter months with their activity. Bird-friendly habitat is in short supply, particularly in urban areas. Still, by creating bird-friendly gardens wherever you live, you can provide a welcome space for these creatures and increase the number of bird varieties you see in your yard. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, birds have three basic necessities to survive and thrive – food, water, and shelter. All three things must be taken into account in your landscape. A bird-feeding station can help feathered friends find nourishment year-round and is a great way to see and learn about birds up-close. However, there are also many plants that provide vital food sources for birds. The greater the variety of bird-friendly plants you offer, the greater variety of birds will make a home in your yard. Birds need a source of fruits, berries, and seeds. Trees and plants attractive to birds include mulberries, which produce fruit in mid-to-late summer; serviceberries, which also produce fruits in summer; crab apples (my sargent crab attracts northern mockingbirds, cedar waxwings, and more), and dogwood. Dogwoods produce red fruits that persist into autumn. These are another favorite of the northern mockingbirds, as well as other birds. Staghorn sumac, which is brilliant red in the fall, produces clusters of hairy red fruit that birds can eat into the winter months. If you have space, wild vines like grapes and Virginia Creeper produce fruit that is loved by birds.

Greece News February/March 2021 23

Additionally, birds need insects in the warm months; nesting birds, in particular, need a source of caterpillars to feed their hungry young. Planting natives such as white oak can help provide this high-protein food. Insects tunneling under the bark of dead trees also provide a source of nourishment, particularly for woodpeckers. Sunflowers are a fantastic annual crop that can be left in the garden as a food source for birds through late fall. Birds also need shelter – places to nest, roost, and hide from predators. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology advises that meandering lines where shrubs and lawn meet are great places for birds. A mix of native shrubs and evergreens, including conifers, provide protection and food year-round. You may also want to consider placing nest boxes in your yard, especially helpful to our state bird, the Bluebird. Finally, a source of water is important. Birds are especially drawn to moving water, but a simple raised birdbath is appreciated by birds in the summer months. There are products available to heat your birdbath and keep water unfrozen during the winter if you want to invest in them. For more information on the Great Backyard Bird Count, go to www.birdcount.org.

Postal Service asks customers to clear snow and ice Postal officials are asking for the public’s cooperation in keeping mailboxes, steps, and sidewalks clear of snow and ice so letter carriers are able to provide the safest, most efficient delivery service possible. The Postal Service is asking customers to help keep their letter carrier safe this winter through the following actions: •Clear enough snow from curbside boxes to allow mail trucks to approach the box, deliver the mail, and to drive away from the box without danger of the need for backing. •Walkways should be cleared of snow and ice and allow enough traction to avoid slips, trips, or falls. •Steps should also be kept clear of ice and snow and in good repair so as not to cause injury to the letter carriers or others

who visit the customer’s home. •Overhangs should be clear and free of snow and ice to avoid injury. Residents who receive delivery to roadside mailboxes also must keep the approach to, and exit from, the mailbox clear of snow or any other obstacles, like trash cans and other vehicles. The carrier needs to get in and then out without leaving the vehicle or backing up. Customers with questions or comments about their mail service can call toll-free 1800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777). The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations. Provided information
