Home improvement: What’s old is new again (BPT) - Fall is a popular time for home improvement as people think about impressing their guests during the holidays. It is also a time for change, which makes the current trends in home decor so unique. Simply put, what’s old is new again. Homeowners are gravitating to classic and timeworn elements to give their home a traditional feel. Character is not something with which every home is born. Newer construction often sacrifices some of the charm or detail of older home styles that can be incorporated with strategic use of materials and furnishings. Imagination is the limit for homeowners, but here is a sampling of what can be done. Build from the ground up Install new flooring that’s inspired by the charm of vintage floors. By replicating techniques such as wire brushing and hand scraping, distressed flooring achieves the look of vintage craftsmanship.

Rustic charm of wall accents Adding a wood accent wall can create the feel of a farmhouse or even an industrial loft. Wood can add an artistic element or focal point to backsplashes and ceilings. Whatever your goal, accent wood makes a statement. Small touches: Fixtures and surfaces Don’t forget the little details: a glass doorknob, an oil-rubbed light fixture or a stained glass panel in the window. These touches go a long way to convey the look of another era in a newer home.

Mixing eras with furniture Antiques and classic period pieces mix well with more contemporary furnishings to create an eclectic style in a newer home. Mid-century modern elements - from architecture to furniture - weave their way into home decor again this season, proving their staying power. If homeowners are looking to imbue a newer home with the timeless details of tradition, there’s a project of every scale. New materials that are designed to look old will not only perform better, they’ll last for years to come. And “timeless” is always on trend.

(BPT) - Many Americans are avid sports fans, and technology has made it easier than ever for them to enjoy their favorite sporting events in the comfort of their own home. From annual events like January’s Big Game and month-long college basketball tournaments, to international competitions that draw athletes and audiences from around the world, Americans love to gather together to celebrate their favorite sporting events. If you are hosting the ultimate gameviewing party, here are five technology devices to outfit your home: •Sports apps. Leagues and sporting events of virtually every kind have free apps you can use to keep up on what’s happening with your favorite teams and athletes. •Portable projector. You can take advantage of good weather by taking the viewing party outdoors with a portable projector. The lightweight “Minibeam” LED projector from LG, for example, is easily transportable, weighing only 1.43 pounds with an embedded battery that provides up to 2.5 hours of run time, eliminating the need to plug in every time you use the device. Bluetooth connectivity means it can connect and share content between Bluetooth-enabled devices while delivering high-definition picture quality that’s clear and bright with sharp contrast and rich blacks. It can also stream content directly from premium content providers like Netflix, YouTube and Hulu, among others. •Wireless speakers. Pick up on every cheer and capture the emotion in every winner’s voice when you use wireless speakers arranged to optimize sound. Wireless speakers like Music Flow can connect to your TV, surround sound system and even your mobile devices to ensure no one misses a moment of their favorite sporting events.

•Fan Fridge. Let your guests help themselves! Many LG refrigerators feature a “door-in-door” compartment, which makes it easier for your fellow fans to quickly and easily access must-have snacks stored in the interior door compartment. Just stock the compartment with their favorites, and they can access the food and drink they want with a touch of a button - and without ever having to open the entire refrigerator. Not only is this convenient, but opening just this section of the fridge will keep cold air in to help food stay fresher for longer - most useful during those hot summer days to prevent cold air escaping from where it matters most. •A smart cooler. If you’ve decided to move your sports celebration outdoors, you’ll need a way to keep beverages and snacks cool and fresh. A smart cooler can do the trick, and some of them will even charge your cell phone. From smart coolers that are equipped with a solar panel that can charge small mobile devices, to ones that have removable blenders and built-in Bluetooth speakers, or interior lights that make night-game snacking a cinch, today’s smart coolers are a far cry from the Styrofoam boxes of your childhood! To learn more about electronics and appliances that can help you score a win during game-day entertaining, visit www. LG.com.

Freshen your home inside and out (BPT) - Looking for some easy ways to breathe new life into your home? Whether it’s the air inside or the decor itself, freshening things up can make your home look and feel more welcoming at any time of year. You don’t need a lot of time or money to reinvigorate your home; just a few simple and affordable, yet high-impact DIY projects will do the trick. Here are a few projects you can easily accomplish in a single weekend: •Paint an accent wall, trim or ceiling. Decorators often say painting is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to freshen your home’s appearance. You don’t have to redo an entire room in order to leverage the freshening power of paint. Simply painting a single accent wall for a pop of color, using paint to create graphic wall art, or repainting the trim or ceiling will create a whole new look. If you’re looking for inspiration or simple solutions to help seamlessly transform your space, Dutch Boy Paint offers unique project ideas and easy-to-follow how-tos that will make the process a breeze. Choosing the right paint for the job can also ensure the painting project is a breeze, from start to finish. Dutch Boy Refresh paint + primer with Arm & Hammer odor Eliminating Technology, eliminates the need for a separate primer. It saves time since you don’t have to take that extra step of priming first. Plus, it’s great for reducing common household odors. Refresh paint is a perfect choice for laundry rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, mudrooms and even kids rooms. It gives you added assurance that your home will smell fresh and clean. •Don’t forget about your furry family members. You may love your pets, but the truth is they can contribute to a stuffy atmosphere in your home. Wash pet bedding, litter boxes and cloth toys regularly. Contain pet clutter by placing your pup’s or kitty’s toys in a pretty basket where he or she can reach them. •Add some indoor greens. Plants not only make a room look bright and homey, their ability to filter carbon dioxide and other airborne pollutants can help make your home smell fresher, too. •Give your kitchen some TLC. Like most, you probably spend a lot of time in your kitchen. However, you don’t need to do a complete makeover to give your kitchen a fresh look. Start by decluttering countertops and dropping some lemon rinds down the garbage disposal. Next, replace dated cabinet hardware with new handles, knobs

and pulls. Adding in a faucet in a contemporary finish will go a long way too; as a focal point of the kitchen, it will help tie everything together in a subtle way. •Upgrade your entryway. The front door is one of the first things visitors notice. If yours is old, worn and outdated, replacing it with a new one can be an easy, cost-effective way to improve the appearance of your home’s exterior. Even if your door is in good shape, painting it a bright, appealing color can make your home’s facade look fresher and more inviting. Be sure to use a paint formulated for doors, such as Dutch Boy Cabinet, Door & Trim paint. Add decorative lighting fixtures like sconces or a hanging light, dress up front steps with potted flowers and wash sidelights and windows around the entry. •Some sources of stuffiness may surprise you. That old shower curtain not only makes your bathroom look shabby, it can detract from the air quality in the room as mildew builds up over time. Replace old shower curtains with something bright and appealing, and be sure to clean the grate on the bathroom vent fan. Stuffiness hides in the laundry room, too. Cleaning dryer vents and the washing machine regularly, and keeping laundry items and accessories organized can help make even a small laundry area feel fresh. Freshening around the home doesn’t have to be a seasonal project. With a few simple steps, you can create a new look and feel in and around your home at any time of year. For more on these products and inspiration for your next paint project, visit www. dutchboy.com.

(BPT) - The evolution of American families and their changing lifestyles is a popular topic these days. As family dynamics and lifestyles morph, they drive a change in home design. Aside from the enduring presence of a TV and seating, today’s living room looks and functions very differently from living rooms of just a few decades ago. “People are changing their vision of a ‘traditional home,’ “ notes Lydia Marks, co-principal of New York City-based design firm Marks & Frantz Design. “That new vision requires different design ideas, and technology is really informing design decisions in modern living rooms.” “The forces behind these changing dynamics include generational shifts in attitudes, behaviors and lifestyles as well as advancements in home technology, each informing the other,” adds Lisa Frantz, co-principal of Marks & Frantz Design. “Millennials are spending more time at home, parents are seeking memorable experiences through home entertainment, and boomers are working later in life, often multitasking across devices within their home. These shifts are helping drive the trend toward living room designs that are more adaptable.” Usable decor at the heart of today’s living room Today’s living rooms feature a multitude of state-of-the-art technology. Stunning televisions, slim speakers, ultra slim laptops and tablets are a must in today’s living room designs, and because there are so many options and colors to choose from, families can seamlessly integrate technology to enhance the function and design - even in traditional homes. “New colors like rose gold laptops and vintage orange portable speakers create new opportunities to add personalized touches, while striking new television design, like LG OLED TVs, make a stunning statement piece,” Marks says. “And it’s not just about the advanced design form,” adds Frantz. “These products are also delivering innovative performance. It’s about form and function. LG OLED TVs not only look great, but they deliver stunning picture quality and advanced access to streaming content from popular apps, internet channels and streaming content providers.” Connected devices like Smart TVs are transforming how people consume content. Advances such as the webOS Smart TV

Platform offer new features like “Channel Plus” for simple access to channels including BuzzFeed, Esquire and more. And, as the first TV to support both available HDR formats - Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10 - OLED smart TV users can stream the newest HDR titles from leading content providers like Netflix, Amazon Video and VUDU. Dynamic, multi-purpose living spaces Formal living and dining rooms that are never used are a thing of the past, Marks explains. TV still remains king; Mintel reports 99 percent of American households with children younger than 18 have at least one TV in their home. However, families are using spaces like living rooms to serve multiple functions, including entertainment and work, researching and making purchasing decisions, and communicating with distant loved ones. According to a recent Mintel study, more than 67 percent have “binge watched” a TV series, ranking it as their top online TV viewing behavior. Devices such as the feather-weight LG gram 15 laptop, clocking in at a mere 2.2 pounds with a large 15.6-inch screen, make it easier than ever to transition from the office to the living room while also providing enough screen space to multitask between work deadlines, watching your favorite sporting event and late-night online shopping. A smarter home on the rise Homes are becoming as connected as the people who live in them. Today, home automation systems can control thermostat settings, lower and raise mechanized blinds, turn lights off or on, and monitor home security. “With the popularity of wireless devices and smart homes, homebuyers and real estate developers alike now have a stronger interest in creating spaces that seamlessly integrate advanced technology in ways that will enhance the space, and simplify a buyer’s life,” notes real estate trends specialist Ricardo Rodriguez of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. “Product design is so streamlined and visually appealing that consumer electronics are no longer the elephant in the room; they’re often the star. Stylish interiors are enhanced by smart technology, and that’s really having a transformational influence on modern living room design,” Marks says.

Easy ways to weatherize your home (StatePoint) Extreme temperatures -- hot or cold -- can send your energy bills through the roof while also creating an uncomfortable living space for your family. Almost two-thirds of American adults live in a home that needs weatherization, according to a recent online survey, commissioned by Duck brand, conducted by Harris Poll. To bring down energy costs and make the temperature in your home more comfortable, consider defending your home with helpful tools like Roll-On Window

Kits, Double Draft Seals, Socket Sealers and Attic Stairway Covers. You can also adjust ceiling fans, install a programmable thermostat and open or close curtains to leverage sunlight and shade. To learn more about weatherization products and ways you can make your home more comfortable and efficient, visit duckbrand.com/weatherization. Don’t resign yourself to high energy bills and an uncomfortable living space. Weatherizing is simple, affordable and effective.

Top things every renter should know (StatePoint) Renters may be free of some of the concerns and responsibilities of homeownership, but there are a few considerations they should make for financial security and greater peace of mind. Read your lease Whether you’re moving in to a new place or have been occupying your unit for some time, knowing the ins and outs of your lease is crucial. Be sure there will be no curveballs or surprises that you have not accounted for in your budget. Is your rent subject to an increase? By how much and how often? Cross-check local regulations to ensure rent increases are in accordance with the law. Read your lease in order to get a handle on what your responsibilities and rights are as a tenant. Get renters insurance Many apartment communities require renters to carry personal liability insurance to cover the property and surrounding structures as a result of damage caused by the renter. This coverage does not extend to your personal property, however. To cover your personal property, a standard renters insurance policy is recommended. Otherwise, unexpected events such as fire, theft, vandalism or other perils could mean a substantial financial loss to you. However,

the small monthly investment of renter’s insurance could save you thousands of dollars down the line. Do your research to determine what policy makes sense for you. Many insurance providers, offer free online calculators to help you take inventory and determine the level of coverage you need. Perform a careful inspection Before moving into your new rental unit or signing a lease, do a careful inspection, noting any existing damage or necessary maintenance. Communicate concerns to the 0' 0 ' ! management company or landlord in writing. Free online checklists can guide you on what to look for and record. For example, buckling floors and water stains could indicate water damage -- a condition that could lead to property damage. It’s also helpful to take photographs with a timestamp. Do these inspections periodically, as well as when you renew your lease. And remember to also photograph your belongings – or keep your receipts -- because any insurance provider will ask for proof of ownership in the event you have to file a claim. You may not own the property, but it is still your home. Staying on top of the space in which you live can offer you greater comfort and greater peace of mind.

Renovating? Why to consider a fireplace (StatePoint) When considering home renovations, it’s important to be choosy, as some projects can end up costing you a pretty penny with little return on investment. Some fast facts can provide answers to this age old consideration. Here are three compelling reasons to think fireplace. •A gas fireplace will add between 2,950 to $5,900 to a home’s value, according to the “Marshall & Swift Residential Cost Handbook.” •New homebuyers rank fireplaces as the number one most desired decorative appearance product in a new home, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

•Today, homeowners have an opportunity to differentiate their homes with a fireplace in different ways. Both traditional and modern fireplaces are now offered with innovative technologies that push the boundaries of where fire can go and how it can look. Consider brands that designers, architects, builders, and remodelers trust, such as Heat & Glo, which leads the industry in design and innovative technology. For those looking to renovate, a fireplace presents an attractive choice -- whether a sale is in the cards or you simply want to enhance appeal and comfort.

Home ideas for cozy fall living (StatePoint) With autumn comes crisp falling leaves, fresh brisk air and pumpkin spice aromas. It’s time to prepare your home to spend more time indoors, decorating it with warm, cozy accents to set the tone for the season. Make your home fall-ready with the following cozy ideas. Freshen up with soothing aromas A little “me time” is good for the soul, and sometimes you need to pamper yourself after a long day. Whether the scent is apple cinnamon, pumpkin pie or maple leaf, lighting a candle with your favorite fall fragrance creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, enhancing your sense of calm. Create a living room sanctuary Transform your living room into an at-home getaway by displaying seasonal throw pillows and blankets, and adorning the space with elements from nature, like a vase filled with leaf stems and crab apple branches. Crank up the cozy factor with homemade hot cider and a crackling fireplace. Refresh interiors with paint Give rooms a refreshing update, add color and create contrast in a space with accent walls. Deep colors like navy blue help create a relaxing retreat. Or, take a cue from the changing leaves and opt for warm colors, like mustard yellow or burnt orange. To ensure a top-notch paint job, use a premium brand painter’s tape that will deliver sharp paint lines, like FrogTape. It’s the only painter’s tape that features patented PaintBlock Technology, which reacts with the water in latex paint and instantly gels to form a micro-barrier that seals the edges of the tape to help prevent paint bleed.

Innovate with multi-functional appeal Since you’ll be spending more time inside, transform an empty space like a basement or attic into a useful area for the entire family. With a little imagination and a few tools, you can create a vibrant and playful craft room, as did FrogTape Paintover Challenge winner KariAnne Wood from the blog “Thistlewood Farms.” Wood transformed an unused upstairs space in her home into a room for her children to craft, study and hang out with friends. An exciting, multifunctional space is a great way to avoid cabin fever in the months ahead. Give guests a warm greeting Celebrity designer Taniya Nayak correctly predicted home design elements that incorporate typographic elements would be a key design trend in 2016. This trend is all about setting the tone for a space with inspirational quotes, personalization and warm greetings. Welcome guests by playing up the autumnal theme with phrases like, “Hello Fall” or “Give Thanks” on decorative wooden planks or burlap-textured fabric. Consider using various font types and sizes to achieve a different feel for each block of text. Deck out curb appeal Nothing sets a good impression like an attractive entry way and front door. Greet guests with a festive hello by decking out the porch with pumpkins and planting seasonal floral arrangements along the pathway, or creating a fall-inspired wreath to hang on the door. You can even collect a handful of colorful leaves outside to string together and post along your porch fence for extra curb appeal. Get started on your projects now, so you can kick-back, relax and fully enjoy all that the season has to offer.
