The Brockport Arts Festival - a community tradition The Brockport Arts Festival has something for everyone, food and drink to please any palate, art and entertainment for all ages and strong community involvement for this popular annual event. For the last 22 years, BISCO (Brockport Integrated Service Clubs Organization) has presented the Brockport Arts Festival. With each decade this event has grown to be one of largest festivals on the west side of Monroe County. The 2016 Brockport Arts Festival will be held on Saturday, August 13 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday, August 14 from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. This year’s festival will be held in the heart of the business district in the Village of Brockport.
Art Appleby, President of BISCO and Brockport Arts Festival Chair, noted how the festival is true community collaboration. “The Brockport Arts Festival is not just an arts festival, it’s a community event. All of the downtown businesses support the festival and we could not put this event together without their commitment. Almost 20,000 people visit our village during this weekend and it’s our hope that they come back to explore all the amenities that our village offers,” Appleby said. The festival weekend is chocked full of events and activities. Almost 150 vendors will showcase their best work, goods and services. Arts and crafts vendors include hand-blown glass creations;

an artist who creates wood sculptures using a chainsaw and many other new vendors including some from as far away as Florida. Entertainment will take place at two stages throughout the weekend - one at Sagawa Park and another at the Morgan Manning House. Such familiar favorites as Allan Hopkins and the Golden Eagle String Band will perform along with a full schedule of family entertainment. New this year is a string band called Old Skedaddalink. The final schedule of musicians and performers can be found on the website at brockportartsfestival.com. Four area wineries, Victorianbourg Wine Estate, Thousand Island Winery, Gust of Sun, and Lakeland Winery will offer tastings at the Wine Tasting Tent in Sagawa Park. The tent is open during normal festival hours. Admission costs $5 and open to anyone ages 21 and older. Admission includes free tastings from each winery. A classic car cruise-in sponsored by the Rochester Mopar Club will take place on Saturday. Take a stroll down College Street and check out the hot rods and roadsters. Cruise-in participants are encouraged to enter from Utica Street, west of Main Street. Prizes and drawings will be held throughout the day. For more information about the cruise-in, contact Gary at voleshen@aol.com. Shuttle busses compliments of Brockport Central Schools are available during the festival weekend. Parking is limited within the Village of Brockport so festivalgoers are encouraged to take advantage of this courtesy shuttle bus
service. Bus service begins at Sweden Plaza located just south of the Route 19-31 intersection. Shuttle service starts each day at 9:30 a.m. and runs every 20 minutes. “We are very grateful to Brockport Central Schools for providing the busses and drivers. This service is free of charge to riders and at no cost to the festival,” Appleby said. With temperatures expected to be in the 70s and 80s during the arts festival, the committee reminds pet owners to exercise good judgment when it comes to protecting their pets from the summer heat and leave pets at home. Local farmers will offer their summer harvests at the Farmers’ Market on Sunday, August 12 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Market Street. Stop in early to get the cream of the crop including a variety of homemade food items. Village of Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman echoed Appleby’s thoughts. “Over the years, I’ve watched the arts festival evolve. This is a great event that is extremely well organized and very well attended. The arts festival is our signature summer event that showcases all that our area offers,” Blackman said. Quack, quack - the Duck Derby race is on! The annual Duck Derby race is on! After weeks of communicating with the New York State Gaming Commission to ensure that proper gaming laws were being followed, it was noted on July 15 that the race would go on as originally planned. The Duck Derby is set for Sunday, August 14 at 3:30 p.m., when thousands of yellow ducks will be set afloat in the Erie Canal. This popular competition is the culmination to the Brockport Arts Festival and draws thousands who cheer on the ducks to watch to see which duck will cross the finish line first. “Many thanks to our elected representatives, Senator Orrt and Representative
Hawley, and also to our friends in the media who helped by spreading the word. Finally, thanks to Governor Cuomo for taking action,” said Art Appleby, BISCO President and Brockport Arts Festival Chair. Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman also expressed her thanks and appreciation, “We are so grateful for this wonderful news. I’ve never seen government work so quickly,” Blackman said. The proceeds from the Duck Derby benefit the many worthwhile Brockport Integrated Service Clubs Organization (BISCO) community projects. Duck tickets may be purchased before the festival from any member of the

uted this year including a $1,000 Wegmans gift card for first and last place duck that crosses the finish line. BISCO makes community wishes come to life For the last 22 years, BISCO has presented the Brockport Arts Festival. Those who live in the Brockport-Sweden area are familiar with the good works of this community group. Over the years, this organization has provided funding for many area community projects, such as construction of community playgrounds; funded the purchase of an eight-person cycle and storage facilities for Camp Abilities; provided funding for equipment and furnishings for the Youth Area at Seymour Library and much more. Most recently, BISCO has made a funding commitment to construct a boathouse in Corbett Park for the Brockport Rowing Club. Margaret Blackman, Mayor of the Village of Brockport, considers BISCO to be a valuable resource for the community. “BISCO funds so many worthwhile
projects that benefit the children of our community,” said Mayor Blackman. BISCO is an acronym that stands for Brockport Integrated Service Clubs Organization. This association consists of members from a variety of communitybased organizations such as the Rotary, Elks, Kiwanis, Lions Clubs as well as Fire Department and members from other civic groups. The mission of this group is to support community projects, which benefit children within the western area of Monroe County. Membership is open to any person who is affiliated with any organization that can deliver the mission of BISCO. Interested in learning more? The Brockport Arts Festival a boost to the local economy The Brockport Arts Festival is an annual event that many local folks look forward to. It’s an event that the community supports for many reasons. The proceeds from the Duck Derby fund many worthwhile community projects. The festival draws tens of thousands of people to the Brockport area. And to area business owners, this is an opportunity to bring awareness to all the community offers. Robin Waller, President of the Greater Brockport Chamber of Commerce, noted why the Brockport Arts Festival is so important to local businesses. “The arts festival brings many people to the area and gives people the chance to see all the different businesses and all that the area has to offer. It’s a great stimulus,” Waller said. Dorothy Daniels, owner of Dollinger’s Inn and Suites, noted how the festival is a boost to her business. “The festival brings visitors who wish to stay and
vendors who need overnight accommodations. It’s definitely a boost to the local economy especially the hospitality industry,” Dollinger said. Village of Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman noted how this event provides an opportunity to promote the village. “The arts festival is a great economic driver for the area, it gives our businesses the opportunity to promote their goods and services. I’m so happy that the festival is back on Main Street in the heart of downtown Brockport where the businesses can be involved. I extend an invitation to people to spend time at the festival and visit our local businesses,” Blackman said. Many businesses offer specials and promotions during the Brockport Arts Festival.
