Town of Greece Joins the Hellenic Republic of Greece in Celebrating the Country’s 200th Year Anniversary On April 15, 2016 the Town of Greece welcomed the Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Terence Nikolas Quick, for a diplomatic presentation ceremony honoring the people and the Town of Greece. This historic visit by Mr. Quick marked the first diplomatic visit to the Town by the nation of Greece since the Town’s inception in 1822. Mr. Quick’s visit was coordinated between the Hellenic American National Council and the nation of Greece in an attempt to honor the Town for taking the name of the Country of Greece during its struggle for

The idea of freedom and liberty was not unknown to the founders of the Town of Greece, many of whom once fought for independence and freedom during the American Revolution. That human struggle for independence was something which was admired by the founders of the Town of Greece and, as a sign of support and respect towards the people of Greece, adopted the name Greece as our own. The Ceremony on April 15, 2016 highlighted the mutual understanding of freedom and liberty.

On March 22, 1822 the New York State Senate and Assembly passed a resolution authorizing the creation of the Town of Greece which was formed out of the town of Gates. The founders of the town adopted the name after the nation of Greece who had been fighting for their independence against their Ottoman Turkish oppressors. To many in the United States at the start of the 19th Century, freedom and liberty were two common ideologies. Having fought and ultimately gaining our independence in 1781, many Americans were sympathetic to the Greek cause for freedom and liberty.

During the ceremony on April 15, 2016, the Town of Greece presented a commemorative plaque as a symbol of international friendship between the people from the Town of Greece and the Hellenic Republic to commemorate the historic visit. In return, Mr. Quick presented the town with the official flag of the Hellenic Republic of Greece, a proclamation, and a sterling silver box as a token of their appreciation. The flag that was presented to us will be flown on the Greece Town Hall Campus.

March 25, 20021 marked the Country of Greece’s 200th year of independence. In honor of this significant anniversary on Thursday, March 25, 2021, the Town of Greece set up a special display in the service mall area of Greece Town Hall. The national flag of Greece that was presented by Mr. Quick was flown on the Greece Town Hall Campus and at dusk, the sky was lit up in blue, standing in celebration alongside much of the world, which also joined in this historic recognition. There is also an exhibit in the Service Mall area of Greece Town Hall with memorabilia (including the sterling silver box) from the historic visit of 2016.

In addition, a proclamation was prepared and sent to the Prime Minister on behalf of all of the residents of the Town of Greece.

As our winter season comes to an end, I would like to remind you that our Winter Parking Ordinance is in effect through April 15, midnight – 8:00am. Until this time, please do not park on any Town roads or the grass on right-of-ways.

March 22, 2022 marks the two-hundred-year anniversary of the Town of Greece! To officially kick things off, we had a contest open to all Greece residents and businesses to create and submit a logo idea. We had many creative submissions and are in the process of choosing one that will be used on all official literature, documentation and social media relating to the Town’s plan to celebrate this historic event. In the upcoming months we will begin to organize activities and events all in honor of the Town of Greece 200th birthday celebration. There will be many opportunities for members of the community to participate in the planning and development of what we forsee will be nearly a year-long celebration which we will kick off in 2022.

This past month, the Greece Town Board Members and I hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony welcoming a new business to town. Congratulations to Connie on the grand opening of BTB Wood Fired Pizza Bar and Grill! The new restaurant is located at 134 Greece Ridge Center Drive. Check it out for a delicious meal!

In honor of the Republic of Greece’s 200th year celebration of independence, the Town of Greece celebrated in a special way. To honor the Republic of Greece’s significant anniversary, the Town of Greece exhibited a special display in the service Mall Area of Greece Town Hall.

Additional Plans for Inclusive Playground Project The Town of Greece announced that they will complete Phases 1 and 2 of an inclusive playground project, which was announced earlier this year. In February, the Town of Greece welcomed partner, Endless Highway Inc., when the non-profit announced they would be funding the We-Go Round, an inclusive playground piece designed for wheelchair users.

Building off of that enthusiasm, Supervisor Reilich has committed the efforts of his team to install five more pieces of equipment, along with surfacing and shade systems to the project.

“We are excited to bring not one but two never before seen playground pieces to our area. The We-Go-Round is a covered merry-go round type piece and will be supported by Endless Highway Inc. The We-Go Swing will be our areas first inclusive swing designed for those in wheelchairs and will be supported by the Town of Greece. The We-Go-Swing allows children and adults in wheelchairs to swing together with friends and family. I believe inclusion and inclusive play should be at the forefront of our commu-

nity. The ability for children of all ages and backgrounds to play together in a safe environment with their friends and family is important now, more than ever,” Supervisor Reilich said.

A June 2021 opening is expected.

Year of the Hyacinth

By Kristina Gabalski The National Garden Bureau has designated 2021 the Year of the Hyacinth, making this a great time to celebrate and enjoy this beautiful and beautifully scented spring-blooming bulb.

According to the National Garden Bureau, hyacinths were first cultivated over 400 years ago and by the 18th century had become the most popular spring bulbs in the world. Remarkably, at that time, there were 2,000 named cultivars offered by Dutch growers. Today there are less than 50 cultivars in commercial production, but hyacinths continue to be a favorite part of spring bulb displays and early spring decor.

Hyacinths are native to Turkey, Syria, and other parts of the eastern Mediterranean, and today’s hyacinths are hybrids of a single species (Hyacinthus orientalis). The show-stopping flowers of today, which come in a wide range of vivid colors – from royal blue, to violet-blue, to burgundy, white, peach, and more – do not look much like the original species, which have single florets widely spaced along the stem. In addition to stunning colors, today’s hyacinths have taller flower spikes with large, mostly double florets tightly packed along the stem.

Like other spring-blooming bulbs, hyacinths are planted in autumn before the ground freezes. The National Garden Bureau suggests that they be planted near a doorway, at the front of a garden border, or along a garden path where their fragrance can be easily enjoyed. They do best in full sun and in well-drained soil that does not get soggy. Plant them in groups of five or more, buried four to five inches deep. Similar to tulips, hyacinths will look their best the first spring after planting. To help promote another season or two of beautiful bloom, cut the flower stalks after the blossoms fade and let the foliage grow and naturally die back by early summer.

Hyacinth bulbs contain oxalic acid, which the National Garden Bureau points out is unappealing to chipmunks, voles, and deer.

The blooms do well as a cut flower, so consider planting some in your vegetable garden to harvest for springtime cut-floral displays. The bulbs can cause mild skin irritation; wear gloves when planting or handling the bulbs and wash your hands afterward.

ter. Pot up bulbs in containers about six inches deep with drainage holes. Use a moist growing mix and plant bulbs two inches apart with the top of the bulb about one inch below the surface.

After watering lightly, chill the bulbs for at least ten weeks in temperatures of 40 to 45 degrees. An unheated garage is good, as long as bulbs do not freeze. You can place them in a refrigerator as long as it does not contain ripening fruit, which the National Garden Bureau says can damage the bulbs. After chilling, move them to a sunny window, where they will grow and bloom.

Many people ask if it is possible to plant forced bulbs outside to bloom in the following springs. According to Ask Extension, yes, you can plant the bulbs outside, but realize future blooms will not be optimal as the forcing process takes a lot of energy out of the bulb. For best results, remove spent flowers and let the bulbs go naturally dormant in their pots through the spring and summer. Do not remove foliage. Plant outside in the fall. Ask Extension also notes the bulbs may take two years of re-building the bulb to bloom again.

Helping Kids to Thrive

by Tami Raco As many parents know, our children need socialization to thrive, it is an important part of their development and happiness. With the onset of the pandemic, socialization was severely restricted. Children could not see their friends, teachers, coaches and even some family members.

Loneliness caused by the pandemic is particularly tough on children, they have a harder time communicating their feelings and are unable to rely on familiar coping strategies such as visiting with friends. Loneliness in children and adolescents is also worrisome because it can have long-term effects. Research shows that loneliness in kids, especially over extended periods, is linked with mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety in the following years. Due to heightened stress and reduced access to health care, the COVID-19 pandemic also might worsen children’s existing mental health conditions.

Social distancing measures also prevent kids from spending time with their peers during an important period of growth and social development. Friendships with other children can give kids crucial support, build a sense of belonging and help them to develop personal identities.

In children around the age of ten, socialization takes on an increased significance according to Dr. Ronald Dahl from the Center for Developing Adolescent at UC Berkley. According to Dr. Dahl, social skills are crucial to children at this age and cannot be taught by Zoom lessons. This is even more important in the teenage years when kids are finding their niche and opportunities to shine.

Dr. Kelly Newby, a Clinical Psychologist, saw the weight of social isolation on children and felt passionately that she had to do something. “After seeing six and seven year olds with suicidal thoughts I could not sit and do nothing,” she said. Newby decided it was time to take action. She and her staff of licensed therapists began to create a Therapetic Day Camp called Thrive.

This Day Camp presented an opportunity for all ages to engage

Greece News April/May 2021 17 in a socialization movement. The camp began in September of 2020 at Manitou Hill Farms as a full day camp that met in person.

The owner of the horse farm, Jane Gebhardt, generously opened her facility to the Thrive Day Camp on Wednesdays. Dr. Newby brought in extra shelters to create more indoor space and room to break into smaller groups. The staff at Dr. Newby’s office began to create day-long programs to get kids together in a safe, therapeutic and educational venue.

The staff provided a structured trauma informed hands on learning approach. In addition to the staff at Dr. Newby’s office, Teresa Sheffield joined the team as the lead equine instructor.

Teresa is a Trauma Informed Riding Instructor who not only specializes in riding but also in PTSD, anxiety and trauma. The Thrive Camp staff used the great outdoors as the primary setting with plenty of fresh air and nature. Activities range from horseback riding, creative arts, music, yoga - sometimes with a donkey, sports, gardening and community service projects. “We created an opportunity for adolescents and adults to be empowered, teach, support and provide valuable mentorship to one another,” said Dr. Newby.

Thrive Therapeutic Day Camp averages approximately 50 children and teens with 12 staff including therapists, group facilitators, riding instructor, psychologist, interns and volunteers.

“The camp is structured to help encourage children and teens to engage in social connectedness, team building and hands on learning,” said Dr. Newby. The interactiveness of the program is purposefully designed to help combat the issues children are experiencing in this past year of social isolation. The participants also work on community service projects to give an added level of purpose. The camp has performed service projects for veterans on Veteran’s Day, helped at a homeless shelter at Christmas time and worked with the ongoing Colorful Hugs program which brings smiles to residents at local nursing homes. According to Dr. Newby, “The goal of the camp is to normalize mental health, provide alternative socialization, therapeutic educational opportunities, and support to tackle typical conflicts while improving

social communication skills.”

Dr. Newby encourages all parents to check in with their children regularly by asking how they are doing and by supporting their emotions. She finds that sometimes parents are afraid to ask, fearing that they might validate possible negative behavior.

“How is this affecting you? is a great question to ask your child,” Dr. Newby said. Validating your child’s emotions is what helps get them to the other side. As the pandemic restrictions slowly return, work towards a semi-normal climate. Dr. Newby sees the light shining through but she also sees some clouds as the focus shifts from the physical concerns of the virus to the emotional damage caused by the long term social isolation. “Carrying respect for both physiology and psychology, with humble leadership and common sense in our pockets, it is time to open our doors, hold hands again, and resume humanity. If we take the initiative, expecting the mental health consequences rather than ignore them we can come out of this stronger together,” she said. The Greece Police Department offers children’s programs at no charge to residents of the town. The Police Athletic League is winding down their bowling season and now beginning to take registrations for their summer softball program where children of all ages can learn how to play softball with the help of volun-

teer police officers. Greece Recreation is offering many fun and safe programs for children of all ages. Local churches offer a wonderful opportunity for children to safely socialize while their parents are attending service and summer camps. First Bible Baptist, Lake Shore Community Church and Hope Lutheran are just a few of the active local churches that offer in-person enriching children’s programs at no charge.

Summer Bible Camps are also beginning registration very soon at many area churches which gives children a chance to socialize in a faith based community.

While the Covid-19 virus is typically benign in children, the implications of the pandemic could have lasting impacts on our youngest community members. Maintaining common sense precautions and providing children essential opportunities to have social interaction is the key to balancing both physical and mental health for children and families. Although their world may not return to what it once was, it is important that parents and caregivers acknowledge how this affects the younger generations and find ways to help them thrive.

Grants available for Legends & Lore Marker Program The newest grant round of the William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s Legends & Lore Marker Grant Program opened on March 22. The program was developed to help local communities commemorate their unique legends and folklore and to promote cultural tourism with roadside markers.

“Legends & Lore markers create opportunities for meaningful conversations and community awareness surrounding their folklore and legends,” said Deryn Pomeroy, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Pomeroy Foundation. “They help educate the public, encourage pride of place and promote economic activity.”

Legends & Lore marker grants are available to 501(c)(3) organizations, nonprofit academic institutions, and local, state and federal government entities in 11 states, including New York.

Legends & Lore grant funding includes the full cost of a marker, pole, and shipping. The grant application deadline is Monday, May 3, 2021.

A food journal helps you improve your diet

No is the likely answer. The same holds true for trying to improve your diet and not seeing where you are going.

In the past 16 years of working with clients in weight loss the most successful people in losing weight were the ones who used food journals. Keeping a food journal is a tried-and-true strategy. Logging everything you eat and drink into a journal or an app will give you incredible insight on where you are spending your calories and more importantly how your carbs, proteins and fats look on a daily basis, helping you reach your goals.

Research shows that it takes than 15 minutes to journal your daily intake and once you get the hang of it and it becomes a habit, it will likely be closer to 10 minutes a day. Here are a few time saving tips so that you can incorporate this incredibly beneficial habit into your wellness journey.

Use an app: There are many free apps available to download which will help you keep track of your diet. Some popular ones are MyFitnessPal, Ate Food Diary, and Lose It, as well as diet specific type apps.

Plan your meals: If you plan your meals in advance you can enter your food in at the start of the day. This gives you a great idea of how your day is going to shape up at the start of it. It also gives some valuable insight on if you are going to have room for that dessert or not later in the day!

Save recipes: If you eat a meal often or a certain prepared meal regularly, save the recipe in your paper journal or add it into the app

and store it. That makes it much easier to select it once it is there and ready for you.

Scan the bar code: One of the most convenient parts of using a food diary app is the ability to scan many items. No need to record or enter. Simply scan and the nutritional info automatically fills into your diary.

Although food journaling can be time consuming when you first begin, with some planning and patience you can make the process a regular part of your day and it will add so much insight and value to your efforts in reaching your health goals.

Young Photographer Works to Shift Autism ‘Awareness’ to ‘Acceptance’ What’s in a name? A lot, for local Greece photographer Sam Maloney. As a member of the autism community himself, Maloney, 20, knows that mainstream awareness isn’t always enough.

That’s why he’s launching a national campaign to shift language from ‘awareness’ to ‘acceptance.’

“Are they going to hire me?” Sam explains. “Are they going to accept me, work with me, put my differences aside?”

He was scheduled to start a cross-country tour last March, spreading his message and meeting others in the autism community to share his story and listen to theirs. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic put those plans on hold.

ing to fundraise for the trip and their National Campaign, Autism on US Routes 11 and 20 through an extensive can and bottle drive. So far, they’ve collected 28,000 cans - and they’re still at it.

Town-Sponsored DMV-Approved Defensive Driving 2021 Spring Course Registration Now Available to Greece Residents The Town-Sponsored DMV-Approved Defensive Driving Courses have been scheduled for the months of April, May, and June.

Each course will be held in two separate session (6:00pm – 9:00pm) on weeknights.

You must attend both sessions in order to complete the course.

Greece Residents who are interested in attending Defensive Driving Courses may sign up via the Town of Greece website.

Visit the Town of Greece website at www. greeceny.gov, click the “Residents” tab on the upper right hand corner of the home page, select “Defensive Driving Course,” and follow the link to submit the online registration form. You may also access the registration link directly by clicking here: https://greeceparksandrec.greeceny.gov/ wbwsc/webtrac.wsc/splash.html. Please note that the online registration form is submitted through the Town of Greece Community Center. This means that a few of the registration questions may be irrelevant, but are nonetheless mandatory that you answer in order to complete the online registration process. A year-long wait is finally over for residents of assisted living communities The patience of thousands of New York seniors and their families has finally been rewarded with relaxed visitation and communal activities now being authorized by the New York State Department of Health, the regulating agency.

The Department of Health’s new guidelines, issued on March 25, have essentially opened the doors again for over 50,000 residents who call an assisted living community their home. This long-awaited guidance is based on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMC) guidelines and allows for visitation more widely and for residents to go on outings without the burden of having to quarantine for 14 days upon return.

“Assisted living residents, family members, providers, and staff have been through an extraordinarily difficult year. For providers, keeping COVID-19 out of buildings has been the core focus, but the human and emotional costs cannot be overstated,” said Lisa Newcomb, Executive Director, Empire State Association of Assisted Living. “The new guidance will allow more frequent

and meaningful interactions between residents and their loved ones.”

Newcomb makes note of some particularly significant changes that the new guidance makes, including that visitation and other activities will no longer need to be shut down for 14 days for all residents if there is a new positive resident or staff case. In addition, standards for group activities and communal dining have been relaxed. These changes mean that residents will be able to enjoy time with their fellow residents and enjoy all the amenities and activities provided by their assisted living community.

“The vaccine is the game changer. The overwhelming majority of our residents are fully vaccinated. Due to the pronounced efficacy of the vaccines in preventing COVID-19, the NYS Department of Health has given residents and providers the muchneeded green light to re-open their doors and provide for a more active lifestyle for the seniors in our care,” added Newcomb.
