Apple crops this year producing smaller, but plentiful fruit The hot, dry summer in Western New York has been tough on a lot of crops, but not to worry, there are plenty of apples for the apple harvest and Hilton Apple Fest. John Burch, who supplies about 800 pounds of Acey Mac apples for Corey’s Apple Pond, where kids can fish out an apple and win a prize, said that the hot, dry days have resulted in smaller apples. “The crops are plentiful, but the larger apples may cost more at the supermarket because there are fewer of them.” He grows about 20 varieties of apples on 110 acres between his two farms in Parma and one farm in Hamlin. “Most people think that it’s the warm, sunny days that help ripen the fruit, but you also need cool nights and that we haven’t had until now,” said Ron Zarpentine of Zarpentine Farms. Zarpentine’s is one of the apple growers that will be on hand at this year’s Apple Fest. In addition to six varieties of apples, they will be selling sweet cider, cider fry cakes, their famous apple fritters, and six kinds of bread. According to the New York Apple Association (NYAA), New York’s growers are forecast to pick 30 million cartons of apples. That’s slightly above the state’s average crop of 28.6 million cartons over the past five years. “We really are the Big Apple – we are the largest apple-producing state East of the Mississippi, and second only to Washington state nationally,” said Jim Allen, president.

In addition to producing smaller apples, the drought makes apples crunchier and sweeter, according to the NYAA. With less water content, the concentration of sugars in each apple is higher. The apples, cider and apple products, along with pies by R & K Zarpentine Bakery and Walker Fire Dept. Ladies’ Auxiliary will be conveniently located by the shuttle bus drop off and pick up so that visitors can pick up their goodies right before boarding the bus. Photo contest honors longtime volunteer Harriet Zunno The Hilton Apple Fest was practically held in Harriet Zunno’s backyard and appropriately so. Zunno, who passed away on May 2 of this year, was a longtime Hilton resident and Apple Fest volunteer helping with everything from serving as chairperson and board member, to organizing the Kids’ Korner entertainment and activities, to photographing the event and heading up the photography contest. Zunno’s love for photography and involvement in the Apple Fest prompted this year’s committee to give out a onetime Harriet Zunno Memorial Award in Photography. “Harriet gave a lot of time to the Apple Fest Committee and will be missed,” said Maureen Spindler, who now runs the contest. In addition the many hours devoted to the Hilton Apple Fest, Zunno was a respected attorney and member of the Hilton community. In addition to volunteering with the Apple Fest for the past decade, she found time to be involved with the Hilton Rotary and Chamber of Commerce, was an active member of the Hilton United Methodist church and loved singing in the choir. At home, Zunno had two beloved cats, Trouble and Bernie, and enjoyed sewing, gardening, discussing politics and reading. She also lived for baseball season and her beloved New York Yankees. Appropriately, the Apple Fest Photo Contest is turning its focus to the sky with this year’s theme being “The Sky’s the Limit.” Photographers are being asked to showcase photographs that show some aspect of the awesome splendor of the skies whether it be an early morning sunrise, mysterious moonlit skies, bright sunny skies or even a bleak winter day.

A beautifully handmade decorative apple quilt could be your next family heirloom and at the same time help establish scholarships for next year’s college-bound Hilton High School graduates. This year’s scholarship winners are Samantha Barker and Richelle Mason, who each submitted essays on the Hilton community. They received their scholarships at Hilton High School’s Bravo Night in June. “Hilton has been known for being ‘The Little Village with the Big Heart’ through the love and support seen in our community through the recreation sports leagues and camps, the Hilton Apple Fest, and the activities that bring the Hilton East residents and community members closer together,” wrote Samantha Barker. “Hilton is truly a community that resembles a family, but there are always new strategies and ideas to help make our community stronger.”
Richelle Mason wrote, “I believe the best way that we can help the community is by volunteering our time and effort into helping others in need. By helping others you are able to help yourself become a better person which in turn creates a stronger community.” Last year’s quilt winner was John Fridd, Hilton High School graduate and Hilton resident. He said he’s been coming to the Apple Fest for years and enjoys the great sights, sounds and smells of this beautiful time of year. This year’s quilt was provided by Amelia’s Fabric and Yarn Shoppe in the Village of Hilton. Over 120 crafters and artisans showcase their work Arts and crafts are always a huge draw at the Hilton Apple Fest. This year, over 120 crafters will be on hand to showcase their handcrafted items with about 20 being brand new to the Apple Fest. According to Terry Quetschenbach, Apple Fest Board chair in charge of gathering artisans and developing the layout of booths, the trend is “upcycling” or giving new life to old items. Artisans must submit seven photos of their work, which the jurors use to determine the variety and quality of items to be sold. All items must be handmade by the crafter. Mike Read has been selling his wood working at the Hilton Apple Fest for the past 18 years. “I consider it a hometown show,” said the Spencerport resident. He began working with wood back in high school and now has a home workshop where he makes deacon benches, wine racks, coffee tables and nature carvings out of cherry, maple, oak and pine. Read’s impressive work won him “Best of Show” at last year’s Apple Fest. Jan Miller took home first place in the textile category last year for her handmade quilts. This is the second year that she’s sold quilts. Prior to that she sold her embroidered pieces for several years. “I enjoy the Apple Fest because it’s always busy and I always do well,” she said.
Miller took a couple of community education classes to learn quilting. “It quickly became an obsession,” she said. And, as a result, her craft has grown into a small business, which she calls Shoreline Design. Miller makes wall quilts, baby quilts and bed quilts up to queen size. “I like to match the design to the pattern in the material, and make each quilt unique.” As in previous years, judges will visit each craft booth on Saturday, October 1 beginning at 9 a.m. to award ribbons in the following categories: Clothing, Decorative Wood, Drawing/Painting, Fine Art, Floral, Glass, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Photography, Pottery/Ceramics, Special Media, Textiles, Wood, and Best of Show. Awards are presented at 4 p.m. at the Main Stage. The winner of each category does not have to be juried to be accepted into the 2016 Hilton Apple Fest and the Best of Show receives a free single booth for the following year. Each crafter is asked to participate in the Craft Raffle by donating a homemade item from their booth. Proceeds from the raffle are donated to a local non-profit organization. Last year, the Craft Raffle made it possible to donate $1,200 to the Hilton Parma Emergency Food Shelf. by Grace Griffee for the Apple Fest Committee

Auto Show celebrates Street Machines

For 36 years, the Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show has been drawing car enthusiasts from near and far. One of the largest shows in the area, the Apple Fest features an average of 600 vehicles each year. The show will be held on Saturday, October 1 at Village Elementary School, 100 School Lane, with registration from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. A shuttle bus will run to and from the show to the Apple Fest grounds from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The entry fee costs $15 cash per car with proceeds benefitting local charities. Goodie bags and dash plaques are given to the first 500 entries. Judging takes place from 12 to 2 p.m. and
prizes are awarded at 4 p.m. for Club Participation; Hilton Mayor’s Choice; Parma Town Supervisor’s Choice; Best Street Machine of the Show; and first, second and third place in each class. In addition to having a great time viewing some classic cars, participants can enjoy a chicken barbeque sponsored by the Clio Lodge No. 779, and hot dogs and hamburgers sold by the Hilton United Methodist Church. Apple Fest features entertainment for all ages The Hilton Apple Fest draws both community groups, like the Greece Jazz Band, Hilton Generations Band and local dance studios, as well as groups popular in the greater Rochester area. New to the Apple Fest this year are the Crawdiddies, a four-person band based in Rochester that has performed at the Lilac Festival and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. With an original, roots rock/folk music sound, they play songs about Buffalo, Canadice Lake, peppermint tea, and the like, and have their own faithful following. “As a family friendly band in the Rochester music scene, we jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the Apple Fest!” said Heather Taylor, lead singer, and flute and mandolin player for the band. “We love playing Americana/Roots music, especially in this kind of concert venue where people of all ages can celebrate the good things in life, together.” The Crawdiddies will perform on the Main Stage on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. WayWard Wynd will take to the Gazebo Stage on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Inspired by many, from Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and The Byrds, to Luke Bryan, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, and even Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet, WayWard Wynd plays popular songs they like and they know the audience will too. Their show is made up of classic style country, modern Top 40 Country - and anything in between. Recently, British classic rock was added to the set list. WayWard Wynd’s performance is more than just music - it’s full of group participation. The band will take song suggestions and loves to get to know their audience by talking to them, telling jokes and involving them in every way they can. can be seen at the Apple Fest Gazebo Stage on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. The Flock heads up Sunday’s entertainment at the Gazebo Stage from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drummer Howard “H” DeRue has 50 years of experience, as do a couple of his fellow band members, and was inducted into the NYS Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Bob Straubing and Lyle (Fud) Comstock are original Flock members from 1965. The Grove Street Band follows The Flock at the Gazebo Stage from 2 to 4:30 p.m. This three-piece band plays R&B and some classic rock. The members have over 30 years of experience playing the Rochester area. The Greece Jazz Band wraps up Sunday’s entertainment at the Main Stage from 1 to 4 p.m. Performing in the greater Rochester area since 1997, the band was created after community surveys indicated a desire to hear big band jazz. As a volunteer big band, the members have developed a varied repertoire of familiar standards, dance tunes, and modern high-energy jazz charts. The Kids’ Korner features new entertainment this year as well. All things apple celebrated at 36th Annual Hilton Apple Fest The Hilton Apple Fest will celebrate 36 years on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2 at the Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street. “Our mission is to create and produce an apple harvest celebration to benefit the entire community, and to provide the many nonprofit organizations and groups who are at the heart of the Hilton community with an opportunity to join in the celebration, while also fundraising for all of their causes,” said Matt Ulakovic, Hilton Apple Fest Board member. Apple Fest is truly a celebration of the apple and the commemorative 2016 logo conveys that message. Designed by Ben
Rockafellow, SUNY Fredonia graphic art and design student, and Hilton native, the logo is the third that Rockafellow has created for the Apple Fest. The logo is available on a variety of souvenirs, including charcoal grey T-shirts and sweatshirts, handmade mugs, children’s apparel and hats. This year’s specialty sweatshirt will be a quarter-zip instead of the lace-up variety offered last year. In addition to the 2016 logo, the Apple Fest Board has adopted a corporate logo designed by Lynn Brown, Spencerport graphic artist, who entered the logo contest for the first time this year. “They like the logo so much that they de-

The clean look emphasizes Hilton and is easily identifiable. “I wanted Hilton to stand out and for the logo to convey community pride,” she added. Items with the corporate logo also will be for sale, including a mug, tote and rain jacket. After picking up your Apple Fest souvenirs, you’ll want to be part of the time-honored tradition and line up early for a dish of hot apple crisp. The giant apple crisp is being baked each day and will be available starting at noon. Food vendors pick up on the apple theme as well. Among a huge array of food offerings, you can find apple sausage, caramel cider, deep fried apple sticks, apple cider slushies, apple fritters, candy apples and hot apple sundaes. If you’re competitive, and apple pies are your specialty, the apple pie baking contest will take place on Saturday. All pies need to

We are looking for the Best Homemade Apple Pie in New York State! We will be judging the pies on Saturday, October 1st, 2016, at the Apple Fest site, 59 Henry Street, Hilton, NY. The first place pie winner will receive $100, the second place pie winner will receive $50, and the third place pie winner will receive $25. The Youth Division is for children age 16 and under. The first place prize for youth will be $50, and the second place prize will be $25.

The completed application, with a non-refundable entry fee of $2.00, must be mailed to Hilton Apple Fest Apple Pie Contest, P.O. Box 1, Hilton, NY 14468 by Wednesday, September 28, 2016. 4. Your homemade pie will need to be delivered to the Ingham Room of the Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street, between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM on Saturday, October 1, 2016. All cars need to be removed from Henry Street by 9:00 AM or will be towed at owner’s expense. 5. Each participant will submit one freshly baked homemade apple pie in an 8-inch (approximately) non-returnable pie pan. The pie becomes the property of the Hilton Apple Fest. 6. Each entry will be recorded and a number assigned to the contestant. The number will be placed on the bottom of the pan. No other identifying marks may be made on the pie or the pan. Only the Apple Pie Contest Committee will know the identity of the baker. 7. All pies must be made of New York State grown apples and the name of the apples needs to be recorded at the time the pie is submitted. 8. The pies will be judged according to 1) appearance, 2) taste, and 3) texture. 9. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded on the Main Stage at 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 1, 2016.

Tops Pharmacy providing flu shots The Hilton Apple Fest Committee has teamed up with Tops Pharmacy Immunization Team to offer flu shots both days of the Apple Fest in the Hilton Community Center Senior Lounge located on the first floor near the north entrance. Those interested in receiving a shot should bring their health insurance card.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine every year by the end of October. So the Apple Fest is the perfect time to get vaccinated to reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits, and missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations. by Grace Griffee for the Apple Fest Committee
Rachelle Dillio, Miss Upstate New York’s Outstanding Teen, at Apple Fest Miss Upstate New York’s Outstanding Teen Rachelle Dillio has added the Hilton Apple Fest to her busy schedule as a senior at Aquinas Institute. In addition to announcing the winners of the arts and crafts awards, Photo Contest, Apple Pie Contest and Quilt Raffle, she will be available for pictures with children at the Kids’ Korner. “Growing up, I have always loved performing and being in the spotlight,” said Rachelle. She has been dancing and performing on stage since she was four years old and started modeling with Mary Therese Friel, LLC in August 2014. “I had always wanted to learn more about pageants and really see what it is like to dress up and compete,” Rachelle added. “Since my modeling agency also trains beauty queens, I had encountered friends that have won state and local titles. They encouraged me to try it out (and) it’s not like I could lose anything from the experience!” Miss Upstate New York’s Outstanding Teen, part of the Miss America Organization, was only the second pageant in which Rachelle has competed. The competition is
scored on talent, an interview, an on-stage question and, of course, formal wear. “Every girl who holds a title with a crown and sash has a platform for their year of service. A platform is a social issue that we chose to spread awareness about and work on in the community,” Rachelle explained. Her platform for this year is “MIA- Mental Illness Awareness.” “I have chosen this as my platform because I have had a personal struggle with social anxiety and I am still working through it every day,” she said. “My goal is to educate the community by targeting issues on how to help someone with a mental illness and how to get help. Mental health is just as important as physical health!” Once Rachelle graduates Aquinas Institute next year, she plans to study fashion marketing in California and stay connected with modeling and pageantry. “Other than that I hope to become an inspirational person as others have inspired me,” she added. by Grace Griffee for the Apple Fest Committee

Non-profit organizations serve up more than just tasty food Did you know that the Hilton Apple Fest Committee only allows not-for-profit organizations to sell food at the festival? That is because it is the Apple Fest’s mission to give not-for-profit organizations, who are at the heart of the Hilton community, an opportunity to join in the celebration, while also fundraising for all of their causes. St. George’s Episcopal Church on Wilder Road began participating in the Apple Fest around 1993 after longtime parishioner Bob Strong attended the event and suggested that the church should join in. Now visitors make a point of stopping by St. George’s booth to buy their famous apple sausage sandwiches. In fact, the church sells about 3,000 sausage sandwiches and 400 one-pound packages over the course of the weekend. “The apple sausage is made locally just for us and through the years we have tastetested it to make sure it is just the way we want it,” said Tammy Maier, parishioner and organizer. About 20 volunteers work the booth while most of the church members get involved in any way that they are able, whether it’s setting up or cleaning up. The money raised helps to support the church’s mission and outreach programs, including the community garden, which provides fresh vegetables to the Hilton Parma Emergency Food Shelf. “Our church believes in being part of this great community,” said Maier. “We have a lot of fun and always look forward to seeing a lot of longtime friends who come to buy their apple sausage every year.” Another group that benefits greatly from the Apple Fest is the Hilton High School Winter Drumline. This is the fourth year they’ve participated as part of the Hilton School District Music Boosters. Visitors look forward to their funnel cakes every year, but this is the first year they will be selling Tater Tot Poutine. “We wanted to offer something that is popular right now, that the public will like and at the same time keep the Apple Fest trendy,” said Charlie Martella, chairperson in charge of the Apple Fest. “And secondly, we are hoping it sells well!”

Both parents and students, around 40 in all, volunteer to work the booth, help to set up and take down, transport food, and clean up. “It is always good for the kids to participate in helping to raise the funds necessary for extracurricular activities,” said Martella. “It gives them a much greater appreciation for what it takes to do such a thing, and it also gives each one of them a sense of ownership and being a part of something.” The money raised varies depending on the weather, but the goal is to raise a couple thousand dollars, which goes toward the many costs associated with a drumline, such as costumes, sets, equipment and travel. “Kids that are part of a drumline become very tight, spend a lot of time together, work toward a common goal and compete, and it forms a special bond between them that is unmatched in some respects,” said Martella. by Grace Griffee for the Apple Fest Committee

The Hilton Apple Fest supports the Hilton Parma Emergency Food Shelf through monetary donations and by asking those who attend to bring donations of non-perishable food or paper products. The donation drop box will be located at the Community Center where the shuttle buses drop off visitors, so that visitors don’t have to carry their donations while enjoying the festival. In 2015, the Emergency Food Shelf received 819 requests for help. Seventy Thanksgiving baskets and 127 Christmas baskets were distributed to families in need, and a total of 434 families were served throughout the year. The Emergency Food Shelf is staffed by volunteers with most of the food staples collected through donations and contributions. The Emergency Food Shelf is located on the second floor of the Hilton

Take the Big Apple Salad Challenge NYAA invites apple fans who want to eat more healthfully to take the Big Apple Salad Challenge this fall, by eating at least one salad a day that includes apples. Fans who take the Big Apple Salad Challenge are invited to try NYAA’s salad recipes, and to send pictures of their own apple salads to NYAA – the association will share fan photos on its website and Facebook page. “Whatever your health goal – eating cleaner, feeling better, losing weight – salads are a deliciously easy way to eat better without sacrificing flavor or satisfaction,” says NYAA Registered Dietitian Linda Quinn. “Apples add crunch, texture and flavor – as well as nutrients and fiberrelated fullness – to any salad. New York Apple Slaw Salad with Sweet and Sour Cider Dressing Ingredients for 6 servings 2 cups sliced, finely chopped green cabbage 1 cup sliced, finely chopped red cabbage 1 medium red apple, sliced thin and cut into small matchsticks 1 medium green apple, sliced thin and cut into small matchsticks 1 cup grated carrot 1/4 cup shelled, roasted pistachios Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Topping 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1/2 teaspoon country dijon mustard (such as Grey Poupon) 1 tablespoon honey 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon celery seed 2 tablespoons apple cider Directions In a cruet or jar, combine dressing ingredients and shake well. Set aside. Combine cabbage, carrot and apples into a large bowl. Chop pistachios with a knife or use a chopper. Add chopped pistachios to the bowl. Add dressing, salt and pepper to taste, and stir well. Refrigerate for at least 20 minutes; stir again before serving.
New York Apple-cado Salad Ingredients for 4 servings 2 ripe avocados, peeled, pitted and cut into 1/2-inch chunks 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1 red apple, cored and sliced thinly 1 medium red apple, cored, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch chunks 1/2 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced 1 green apple, cored and sliced thinly 1/4 cup diced red onion 1 teaspoon minced cilantro (optional) 1/2 lime, juiced 2 large green leaf lettuce leaves
This is a very colorful, festive salad, thanks to use of both red and green New York State apples, and a healthy amount of romaine lettuce hearts. The herb apple cider vinaigrette nicely blends herbs, spices, and olive oil, with just a touch of apple cider vinegar. Ingredients for 4 servings
4 Romaine hearts, washed, trimmed, top inch chopped off, root end left intact 1 medium red apple, cored and cut into 6-8 wedges 1 green medium apple, cored and cut into 6-8 wedges 8 walnuts, halved 1/2 medium red onion, sliced into disks 2 slices pumpernickel bread, cut into cubes 2 ounces shaved parmesan cheese 2 large hardboiled eggs, sliced Topping 1 tablespoon(s) apple cider 6 tablespoon(s) olive oil 2 tablespoon(s) apple cider vinegar 1/4 teaspoon(s) sea salt 1 teaspoon(s) each chopped fresh oregano and thyme, OR 1 teaspoon of dried herb mix Ground black pepper to taste Directions Combine all vinaigrette ingredients in a cruet or lidded jar; shake vigorously to combine. Prepare grill by lining it with foil or using a grill pan to keep smaller pieces of food from falling through the grill grate. Preheat grill on high temperature. Use a basting brush to paint romaine hearts, apple wedges, red onion, and walnut halves with vinaigrette. Saturate bread cubes in remaining vinaigrette. Place romaine and apple wedges on grill. Add onion, bread cubes and walnuts to grill. Grill on high until all ingredients are lightly browned, turning as needed to brown uniformly – approximately 5-10 minutes for the romaine, 20 minutes for apples and other ingredients. Remove grilled items from heat and arrange on four plates, placing grilled romaine on each plate first and then topping romaine evenly with other grilled ingredients. Top with shaved parmesan and boiled egg slices. Serve promptly.
New York Apple BYO Salad wth Apple Cider Drizzle
It’s a salad that combines healthy with delicious by including a great mix of greens, carrots, red cabbage, chick peas, dates and more – plus a red and green New York apple. It’s topped off with a tasty apple cider drizzle providing just the right amount of flavorful zest. Ingredients for 4 servings 4 cups mixed greens 1 15.5-ounce can chick peas (aka garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed 1/2 cup red cabbage, thinly sliced and chopped 1 cup carrot, peeled and grated 4 Medjool dates, halved, pitted and chopped 4 ounces aged cheddar cheese, thinly shaved 1 medium red apple, such as Empire, cored and chopped 1 medium green apple, such as Crispin, cored and chopped 16 shelled pistachio nuts, toasted and chopped Topping 2 tablespoons apple cider 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/8 teaspoon fresh-ground black pepper Combine all ingredients in a lidded jar and shake vigorously until blended and smooth. Shake again prior to serving. Directions Wash and spin the mixed greens in a salad spinner. Set aside to dry. Make the Apple Cider Drizzle and set aside while preparing salad. Prepare the remaining salad ingredients, from chick peas through pistachios, and set aside. Once greens are dry, add them to salad serving bowl or arrange on four plates. Festival parking is available at Hilton High School, 400 East Avenue. Free shuttle service to the Apple Fest Grounds is available 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Handicap Access parking and shuttle are also available at the high school, free of charge. If walking, the Apple Fest Grounds are located at 59 Henry St. There is ABSOLUTELY NO PARKING OR DROP-OFF at the Apple Fest grounds, or adjacent village streets.Violators will be towed at vehicle owner’s expense.
