Be part of eclipse history by sharing your impression with PHHS

The Parma Hilton Historical Society (PHHS) wants to make a record of living history from its residents during the solar eclipse. There will not be another total solar eclipse in Parma/Hilton until the year 2144, and while none of us will be around for the next one, we can leave a historical record of this eclipse for our descendants.

PHHS asks those who are interested in participating to answer the following questions:

enforcement has warned the Town that traffic will be especially heavy on Redman Road due to the eclipse event being held on the SUNY Brockport campus, the Town has decided to make those 100 spots available while restricting traffic through the rest of the park. The park is fully open to pedestrians; sidewalks connect the village of Brockport and SUNY Brockport populations to the park.

Finally, the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center parking lot will be closed for the day due to the narrowness of Bader’s Way and the accessibility of Royal Gardens to emergency vehicles.

Compeer Rochester using mentorship to tackle loneliness

The Surgeon General recently identified loneliness as a public health threat, declaring social connection as the solution. Here in our community, Compeer Rochester has been championing this message for over 50 years with its internationally recognized model for mental wellness through the power of mentorship.

The organization continues the battle against loneliness in our community with a strong call to action from those who live in it to become mentors. Currently, 162 individuals, including 78 adults and 84 youth, are eagerly waiting to be connected to a mentor. This is precisely the type of connection and support the Surgeon General says can extend and improve their lives.

The impact of social disconnection is profound, both physically and mentally. Social isolation is linked to anxiety, depression, a 30% increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and adverse effects on education and economic outcomes. In fact, the WHO recently announced its Commission on Social Connection to tackle loneliness as a significant health threat.

“Our 50-year journey has shown us the transformative power of mentorship in combating loneliness,” says Sara Passamonte, President/Executive Director of Compeer Rochester. “As we stand on the cusp of a new era with the WHO’s Commission on Social Connection, we urge the community to join us in making a difference. Just four hours a month can change a life and contribute to the well-being of our entire community.”

According to the WHO, one in four older people experiences social isola-

tion, while 5-15% of adolescents face loneliness, with these figures likely underestimations.

“Mentorship is an investment in the future of another person – regardless of age, mentoring is a unique relationship based on support, advice, and counsel,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. “The more we guide people and invest our time in them, the more opportunities for success our residents will have. We are fortunate that, for the past 50 years, Compeer Rochester and its dedicated volunteers have helped to address this need in our community. We encourage even more people to become mentors so no one has to experience isolation.”

Those who volunteer with Compeer Rochester receive as much as they give. In as little as four hours a month, mentors can make a tremendous impact on someone in the community who lives with mental health condition. In return, they also gain a new friend – not to mention community discounts. These volunteers are carefully matched according to mutual preferences and receive comprehensive, customized training.

As mentioned above, an additional perk to those participating in the program is that volunteers and their matches receive opportunities to enjoy free and discounted activities together at local businesses such as Strong Museum of Play, Memorial Art Gallery, West Herr Auditorium Theater, and Rochester Museum and Science Center.

Churchville-Chili Central School District names

Dr. Carmine Peluso as next superintendent

The Churchville-Chili Board of Education has selected Dr. Carmine Peluso as the next superintendent of the Churchville-Chili Central School District, pending formal appointment to the position. He will begin his new role on July 1, 2024. Dr. Peluso will succeed Dr. Lori Orologio who is retiring on June 30, 2024.

“On behalf of the Board of Education we are excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Peluso,” said Churchville-Chili School Board President Kathleen Dillon. “He brings a wide variety of experiences and a skill set that will take our district to the next level! We look forward to a smooth transition in leadership. The Board thanks Dr. Orologio for her leadership and dedication to our district. We wish her the very best as she begins a new chapter in her life.”

“I am excited to become a part of the ChurchvilleChili Central School District,” said Dr. Peluso. “I look forward to meeting the students, staff, and families in our schools and community. I am committed to working with the administrative team and Superintendent Orologio to ensure a seamless transition.”

Dr. Peluso has 25 years of experience serving students, families and school communities in various districts. He is currently superintendent of the Rochester City School District. During his time as superintendent, he helped stabilize the budget, reconfigure the district, settle collective bargaining agreements, led planning for a $475 million facilities

modernization program, and created a new strategic plan. Before serving as a superintendent, Dr. Peluso was a deputy superintendent, chief of schools, principal, assistant principal and teacher. As principal, he led Dr. Louis A. Cerulli Elementary School from the NYS Receivership list, out of “Priority School” status and into “Good Standing.” Dr. Peluso also served in Churchville-Chili Central School District as an assistant principal, Pittsford Schools as an assistant principal, East Rochester Schools as a principal, and was a teacher in Pittsford Schools and the Rochester City School District.

Dr. Peluso earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Distributive Education from Nazareth University, a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from St. John Fisher University, a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Leadership from Niagara University, and a Doctorate in Education from St. John Fisher University. He has been on the Rochester Business Journal Power 100 list for the 2023 and 2024 years. He earned the Distinguished Leadership Award from St. John Fisher University in 2003 and the Distinguished Leadership Alumnus Award in 2015.

Dr. Peluso’s wife, Tiffani, is an elementary school teacher, and they have two sons, Nicholas (20) and Michael (18).

Spring Break Small Animal Days at CountryMax

After its successful free events for kids in February, CountryMax is offering Small Animal Days again during spring break this year. They will be held Tuesday, April 2, and Thursday, April 4, at 10:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. at several CountryMax locations, including the Brockport and Spencerport stores.

“It’s something super-fun for kids to help break up the break-week doldrums,” says Kelly McMorrow, events coordinator at CountryMax.

Plenty of parents are looking for activities during the week away from school. So, here’s an opportunity to mix things up and meet some really interesting small animals. CountryMax is home to hamsters, ferrets, gerbils, bunnies, even snakes and lizards.

“It’s a like a free trip to the zoo,” says McMorrow, “with a chance to actually meet, pet and interact with the small animals.” But that’s not all there is to small animal days.

Kids start with coloring sheets and a craft – paper-roll chicks, butterflies or bunnies – that they can take home. Then they visit with the many cool creatures at CountryMax.

Great Fire of Hilton historic marker dedicated

When a winter storm warning was issued for March 23, it was not certain if many people would attend the planned 10 a.m. dedication ceremony of the historic marker recognizing the Great Fire of Hilton. The colossal event destroyed 80% of the Hilton’s business district on Main Street and East Avenue on Sunday, March 21, 1965.

Happily, about 68 people arrived in time for the marker’s unveiling. Sr. Fireman Ken Mullen did the honors. Seven of the original firefighters who battled the blaze as young men in 1965 were on hand to reminisce and regale members of the community with stories of what that day was like 59 years ago. It was 13 degrees F, with freezing rain, wind, snow, ice, and a raging fire.

Tom Ban, owner of the Arlington Restaurant, hosted the event. He had the firepit going on the patio and offered a special fireman’s menu of beef on weck with a small bowl of chili in the restaurant. Tops market donated coffee and donuts for the early arrivals. A few guests were even spotted having an early morning “eye-opener” at the fire pit.

Overall, it was a memorable morning for the

community to usher in a new historical marker, pay respects to its firefighters, and just enjoy being outside socializing on a cloudy Saturday.

town of Sweden enters contract to sell 133 State Street property

The Town of Sweden has entered a contract to sell 133 State Street to a local dentist. The contract includes the Village of Brockport as the owner of a small portion of the parking lot at the east end of the canal-side facility.

The former senior center has been leased to Lifetime Assistance since 2015 for use as an office building, day habilitation center, and county nutrition program site. Lifetime Assistance had already been operating the county’s nutrition program at the center since 2009 and had leased one room for use by an adult day habilitation program since 2011.

In 2019, the Town of Sweden listed the building for sale with Lifetime Assistance retaining the option to meet any offer received by the Town. After the initial throes of the pandemic, the building was shown many times to potential buyers wishing to convert it to student housing, senior housing, restaurant/banquet facilities, winery/tasting room, etc. None of those proposals came to fruition.

Joseph Gerard Harkness

Joseph Gerard Harkness, age 69, originally from Rochester, NY passed away on September 12, 2023 in Cedar Park, Texas.

Joseph was born on November 25, 1953 in Batavia, NY to Antoinette and Edward Harkness.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Virginia Porter Harkness, his two daughters, Rebecca Harkness and granddaughter Natalie Nancy Harkness of Whittier, CA and Amanda Jones and her husband Christopher of Bridgeport, Texas. He also leaves behind his sister, Mary Anne Harkness of Batavia, NY, and several extended family members. Joseph was predeceased by his parents.

Joseph graduated from Batavia High School in 1971 and entered the U.S. Army serving honorably from December 1972-December 1975. Upon his discharge he earned an A.A.S. degree in Computer Programming from Genesee Community College in Batavia, NY.

Joseph had a successful career, working for Eastman Kodak Company for 24 years and ITT Geospatial Systems for 6 years before retiring in July 2010.

He was an active member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Chili in Rochester, NY. He was also a member of Rochester Chapter 20 Vietnam Veterans of America and served on its board of directors for several years before moving to Texas in 2019. He was a well-respected softball umpire during the 1980’s and 1990’s for Kodak, Chili, and Gates leagues. He served as treasurer for the local leagues for some time. He was an avid jogger and swimmer. He took much pride in his physical fitness. He was kind to whomever he met, a hardworking employee, honest, dedicated and faithful.

A celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church of Chili located at 3600 Chili Avenue, Rochester, NY 14624. The service will begin at 11 a.m.

Paul Warren

Paul J. Warren, age 64, of Brockport, NY, passed away after a long illness at United Memorial Medical Center, Batavia, NY.

He was born on February 29, 2960, a son of the late Edward and Helen Warren.

Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the casino, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Dorothy Calkins; daughter, Salena Warren; siblings, Linda (Ric) Hall, Sharon Warren, Ronald (Cathy) Warren, Edward (Karen) Warren, Sandra (Rick) Faro, Ken (Michelle) Warren, Diane Warren, Bruce Warren, Valerie (Jean Guy) Warren, and Dawn Vergari; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

In death, Paul is reunited with his parents, Edward and Helen Warren, and his brother, William J. Warren.

In anticipation of the current offer from the dental practice, the Town gave Lifetime Assistance a notice of termination of lease and immediately began working with Lifetime and Monroe County’s Office of the Aging to move the senior nutrition program to the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center at 4927 Lake Road. Senior recreation programming had already moved to the Community Center in 2015 and it is seen as a natural transition to bring the lunch program to where the majority of seniors participate in a full slate of education, recreational, and social activities.

The Town, County and Lifetime are planning for a midMay opening of the lunch program at the Community Center. Seniors who use the bus for transportation to the 133 State Street site will still be able to use it for the new location. All other details of the lunch program remain the same: days of the week, times of day, suggested donation, and menu.

John (Jack) Donald Spitz

June 22, 1935 - March 22, 2024

Jack was born to John and Pearl Spitz in the Dutch town neighborhood in Rochester, NY and was predeceased by his only sibling, Margaret Michael. After graduating from Jefferson High School, Jack served proudly as a Navy Seabees in the Korean War stationed in Kwajalein Atoll. Upon return, he took advantage of the GI and attended University of Alfred for carpentry until he realized he already learned everything from working with his father. Then he met and married the love of his life, went to work with his father at Spitz & Sons carpentry for seven years, then onto Eastman Kodak for 27 years, retiring at the age of 57. Jack was admired and adored by everyone he met. He couldn’t go out to dinner without running into someone he knew. He was a skilled carpenter and always ready to help, whether it was building an apartment out of a garage or renovating homes. He spent many years volunteering his time to help others. He enjoyed his weekly Euchre games with friends and won quite a few times. He enjoyed gardening, puzzling and YouTube, his most recent hobby that allowed him to travel throughout history without leaving his favorite chair. He especially liked orchestras and anything to do with World War II. You could ask him anything about the war and he had the answer.

The main property itself has long been zoned residential even though the use of it (dating back to 1980 when the Town first built the original senior center) has been non-residential in nature. When the two municipalities entered into an agreement in August 2019 to sell the properties jointly, there was a tacit understanding that the properties would have to be rezoned; the likelihood of a purchase being made for use as a single family home was very unlikely.

The Town has begun work on an Incentive Zoning application that will be a joint application to the Village Board. The Village’s Incentive Zoning Code requires applicants to provide an amenity or amenities. In this case, not only will the Village receive 3% of the net proceeds of the sale of the properties; the properties will be returned to the tax rolls after more than 44 years. That is a benefit to taxpayers of both municipalities.

•D’Agostino, Shirley M. (McBride) died March 20, 2024 at age 83. Born October 13, 1940 in Brockport, Shirley leaves behind her sons, Robert (Lori) D’Agostino, Thomas (Teresa) D’Agostino, and James (Jodie) D’Agostino; her grandchildren, Mindi, Jimmy, Trisha, Robin, Tommy, Samantha, Michael, Nick, Kristina, Jamie, Shannon, and Katie; her seven greatgrandchildren; her five brothers-in-law; her one sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Christine McBride, and her husband, Sam D’Agostino. Shirley retired from Eastman Kodak Company where she worked in assembly. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who dearly loved her family.

Services for Shirley will be held in late June. Arrangements entrusted to the Thomas E. Burger Funeral Home, Hilton.

He leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Wanda (Kase) Spitz. Together they raised five children: Dawn (Reisinger), Terri Spitz-Schmidt (Peter), John Spitz, predeceased by daughter Karen Spitz (deceased) and their youngest, Stephen (Jill). He leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his best buddy, Muffy, a 12 year old cockapoo who loved taking naps with him every day.

Jack will always be remembered for his big heart and cheerful nature. His children will be forever grateful for all the love and help he gave through the years. His great grandchildren will remember his gentle teasing and always having some sweets to eat. Jack passed gently in his sleep and is at peace. He lived a good life and will be sadly missed. •Hennekey, Megan J., born April 21, 1979 and died unexpectedly March 16, 2024. Megan is survived by her daughter Ava Hennekey; mother Diane Hennekey; father Thomas (Stacy Lynaugh); sisters Carrie (Juan) Rodriguez, Lauren (Casey) Ault; nephews Julian, Jon, Gage, Casey; and nieces Lillian and Audriana. She had many close friends - so many to name. Megan is predeceased by her uncle, John Wais, grandparents Alan and Eva Wais, Jack and Joan Hennekey and her best friend, Mia Guzman. As a young girl, Megan was musically inclined. She could pick up any instrument and start playing. She had a love for sports and loved playing softball and soccer. Megan graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College with a degree in BSN RN. Nursing was her passion and took pride in caring for others, especially the most difficult cases. She loved the emergency room at Unity Hospital. She was beautiful inside and out and would light up a room. Megan was kind, smart, lovable and caring. These qualities made her an excellent mother, daughter, sister and nurse. Everything Megan touched was done with unconditional love. Megan’s greatest moment was the birth of her daughter, Ava. She loved her so much and showed her off to everyone. Ava was her world and her whole heart.

holley •Coates, James B., age 76, died March 22, 2024. He was born July 10, 1947, in Salisbury, NC, a son of the late Willis and Eva Nell (James) Coates and had lived in this area for 35 years. Jim served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Era and was a member of the Holley Jewell Buckman Post #529 American Legion and served many years on the Honor Guard. He was a man of many hobbies; a private sports pilot naming his plane Sweet Pea, enjoyed boating, kayaking, and motorcycling. Jim worked as a substance abuse counselor for Albion and Orleans Correctional Facility and had 41 years in AA. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Rick and his sister Kathy. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Pat; brothers John (Debbie), Bill (Angie), David (Lindsay); sister Barbara (Joe); close family members Heather (Paul) and their son Paulie; sister-in-law Kathy (John); many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Son of World War II bomber pilot shares personal stories

Keith Horn, a Greece resident, is the son of the late 1st Lieutenant Ladd L. Horn of Orchard Park. Keith knew of his dad’s military service in World War II as a B-26 pilot. Still, it was never discussed in great length, partly due to the busyness of life and his mom, Ethel’s reticence that these types of things should not be discussed.

“My Dad would occasionally share some of his WWII shenanigans with us, but the tough stories were held back for more than 75 years,” Keith said.

Keith moved to Greece in 2012 to be closer to his grandchildren. Shortly after that, Keith began spending several days a week in the Buffalo area, helping his parents, who were both in their nineties. In 2014, between driving them to medical appointments, cooking, and cleaning, Keith began asking his dad questions about his WWII experiences. “The Lord gave me a gift to have this time with my parents. I wanted to capture these memories and put them on paper so that his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and future generations would know who he was.”

With very few WWII veterans still alive, Ladd Horn was eager to share his stories. “I spent two years with my father, listening to his experiences in the war. It seemed as if he felt the need to tell the sto-

ries, even the difficult ones.” Ladd’s memory was sharp, even at 95, as he recalled flight speeds, crew members, locations, and events.

As the stories unfolded from father to son, they began to go through meticulously preserved photos from the WWII military enlistment. Ladd learned how to develop his own film in high school. He took pictures during his tour of duty and developed the film in improvised dark rooms built on the side of tents out in the field where he was stationed. Ladd would then send the negatives and prints back home to his family and his love, Ethel. The album was rich in photos from his firsthand experiences and encounters being part of the 95th Bombardment Squadron of the

The storytelling went on for almost two years. “Dad complained we weren’t moving fast enough, and he was right,” Keith said. Lt. Ladd Horn passed away on October 16, 2016, and the journey through his WWII memories was unfinished. The storytelling, recollections, and remembrances from this World War II veteran in his nineties had ended.

Keith’s mom passed away in 2018. After losing both beloved parents, Keith and his family were taking care of the estate when he found an incredible collection of military memorabilia from his dad’s service, including pictures, documentation, flight records, and deployments. One thing he never expected to find was a box of letters that the young bomber pilot had sent to his true love, Ethel. Ladd had written a letter nearly every day of his deployment. “I never knew these letters existed,” Keith said.

Keith then began the journey through his dad’s written words, learning of his experiences as a young man in his twenties. The daily letters to his future bride described his locations, details of events, and the war as he was experiencing it. “In his words, he shared his losses, celebrations, and even a marriage proposal. This was such a unique perspective to have after spending years getting the perspective from him as a man in his nineties,” Keith said.

Keith combed through the letters, reading his father’s words to his mother long before he and his sister were even a thought. He began piecing together the letters, pictures, and details of his tours during the war through both lenses – the eyes of a 94-year-old WWII veteran and the eyes

of a young man who enlisted during wartime and was deployed to fight in this historic war.

“I began to realize that these stories are so much different than most WWII books due to how personal it was and how it spanned the experiences of the lifetime of a B26 Bomber pilot. Having these two distinct views spanning more than 70 years and match precisely was incredibly rare and unique,” Keith said.

After thousands of hours spent journeying through his dad’s war experiences, the idea of publishing a book began to form. What was initially recorded for Ladd Horn’s children, grandchildren, and future generations was being recognized as a blessing to many.

Nearly a decade later, this idea brought Keith Horn to the publishing field for the first time. He wrote the book, Let the Kicking Mule Kick: Personal Stories from a WWII B-26 Bomber Pilot to His Family, which was published in March of 2023. The title is based on the insignia of the 95th Bombardment Squadron to which Lt. Ladd Horn was assigned. The book is written in two parts. “Part I: The War As I Heard It” features war stories told by a father to his son in his last chapter of life. “Part II: The War Through The Lens of Love” includes excerpts of letters written by a young man in his early twenties, capturing historic events and sharing them with his future bride. The book is rich, with more than 300 photographs taken during the war.

According to Keith, the book is great for all ages. A person does not need to know history to read and enjoy it. It can be a resource for homeschool families, useful to capture the attention of junior and senior high school students studying history, or for anyone interested in this

historic era. “It is a great opportunity to let young people know about a young man who was responsible for a crew, flying across the globe, no instruments, no radar, no heat in a 34,000-pound aluminum can, with several tons of bombs attached,” he said.

The book is a roller coaster of the stories of a man’s survival through a war where he had regular contact with death. Keith said, “Part of my dad’s strength lies in the fact that he had given his life to Jesus at an early age. He trusted Jesus with his life, and you will hear him talk with Jesus in the face of death, so sit back and enjoy the ride with your guide, 1st Lieutenant Ladd L. Horn, a B-26 Marauder pilot.” He added, “My Dad would want readers to know the man he was, the depth of what he went through, and just how deep his faith was, which kept him from being broken and able to tell these stories.”

Westside Challenger Tennis offering spring program

Westside Challenger Tennis will provide a spring program this year for students with special needs. Although this program is designed to ensure that students with special needs receive instruction tailored to their individual skill level, the program is integrated and all players are welcome. Westside Challenger Tennis is based on the United States Tennis Association motto that “people of all ages and abilities should have an opportunity to participate in the game of tennis.”

The spring session will be held on three Saturdays, April 13, 20, and 27, from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. at the Brockport Central School tennis courts or Brockport Middle School (if it rains). Participants should plan on attending each of the three dates. Specially trained tennis teachers will work with all partici-

pants, providing instruction tailored to a given participant’s ability. Equipment and refreshments will be provided at no cost. This program has a limited enrollment of 20 participants, accepted on a first come first serve (pardon the pun) basis. Students with special needs will be given enrollment priority. Slow Down/Move Over law expansion

A new law expanding New York’s Slow Down/Move Over requirement took effect on March 27. The expansion includes disabled vehicles on the roadside requiring drivers to exercise caution when approaching them in an effort to protect motorists.

All 50 states have a form of the Slow Down/Move Over law that requires drivers to slow down and change lanes, if safely possible, when they encounter a vehicle with flashing lights stopped at the roadside. New York’s law has existed since 2010 – it is expanding to cover disabled vehicles along with police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks and road construction/maintenance vehicles. This expanded law is now in effect in 22 states.

of AAA Western and Central New York, cites new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, which shows that 84% of roadside crashes occur in good weather without precipitation or slippery road conditions. “Many of these crashes can be avoided if drivers focus on driving and observe the law by slowing down and moving over when they see a disabled vehicle or any roadside activity for that matter,” he said. “AAA reminds drivers to give space to anyone on the roadside. It’s imperative to save innocent lives.”

National Vietnam War Veterans Day

Friday, March 29, was National Vietnam War Veterans Day. This day is set aside to honor those who bravely served and sacrificed and their families. Nearly 10% of their generation served during the Vietnam War era. The Vietnam War is arguably one of the most controversial and divisive conflicts in American history. Television brought home to American living rooms the hardships of serving and the trauma of war. Despite this, members of the military continued to carry out their missions with bravery and resolve. Grunts continued to hump through dark, torturous jungles and swamps; pilots continued to fly support and resupplies through enemy fire; nurses, doctors, and med-

ics continued to heal young warriors. Defending democracy at home and fighting for a foreign country’s right to self-govern left scars on the returning veterans. Nightmares of war and post-traumatic stress were common and compounded by the lack of respect of a nation that seemed ungrateful for their service. Often times it seemed they were blamed for a war they didn’t start and denigrated by the community they sought to serve. The National Vietnam War Veterans Day is our opportunity to celebrate the veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice.

Learn about growing potatoes during virtual workshop

Growing potatoes can be a fun, rewarding activity. Homegrown potatoes, fresh from the garden, taste better than those from a long storage. They are nutrient-dense, offering fiber, vitamin C, B6, and potassium.

Cornell Extension of Monroe County, in collaboration with Fraser’s Garlic Farm, is hosting the “Growing Potatoes 101 Virtual Workshop” on Thursday, April 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Community garden members, school garden educators, urban and suburban backyard gardeners, aspiring gardeners, and homesteaders who want to try something different are all invited to join. Expert presenter, farmer and local grower Ed Fraser, will cover key steps to successful potato growing from planting, care, pest, and disease prevention to harvesting and storage.

The cost of the workshop is $15 per person. Participants can also purchase a Potato Medley at registration. It includes four interesting and unusual varieties:

•Upstate Abundance – bright white skin and flesh, round, creamy, great in soups, stews, roasting, boiling, mashing, chips, steamer bags, and salt potatoes. As creamers, kids love to pop them straight into their mouths.

•Soraya – yellow skin and yellow flesh, disease resistant, good for organic growing

•AmaRosa Fingerling – smooth red skin with creamy red flesh that resists fading during cooking, a high-yielding variety that is great fried, roasted, boiled, steamed, or as pink chips

•Magic Molly – purple skin and unique dark purple flesh fingerling, great for roasting

Genesee Community College’s Kristen Schuth has been named National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Athletics Director of the Year (ADOY). The award spans seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior College/Community Colleges). Kristen, who serves as the Administrator in Charge for Student and Enrollment Services and Director of Athletics at GCC, has been recognized for her commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, GCC, and the surrounding communities. Winners will be recognized in conjunction with the 59th Annual NACDA & Affiliates Convention at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada on Tuesday, June 11.

Kristen was appointed as GCC’s Director of Athletics in 2013. Under her leadership, the college has achieved incredible success, capturing many regional and conference titles and two national championships. The athletic department has produced numerous All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, and placed in the Daktronics Cup for the first time ever in school history, a testament to Schuth’s dedication to both athletics and academics.

Beyond her contributions to GCC, Kristen is involved at the regional and national levels, serving as the NJCAA Region 3 Women’s Director, Region 3 Board of Regents Representative and Board of Regents Secretary. She is the NATYCAA secretary and executive committee member, and chairs several NJCAA Division III committees, including the D3

Oversight Committee, putting her at the forefront of decision-making processes that influence the direction of D3 athletics. She also played a crucial role in hosting several regional and national championship events at GCC. Schuth is a two-time recipient of the Region 3 Athletic Director of the Year award and was previously named the NACDA Athletics Director of the Year in 2021. In 2023, Kristen was the recipient of the prestigious NJCAA George Killian Award of Excellence for her outstanding commitment to voluntarism, service, leadership and excellence.

“Receiving the NACDA Athletics Director of the Year award is a tremendous honor, not just for me personally, but for the entire Genesee Community College family. The eclipse will be spectacular – but watch your eyes

As you may know by now, a rare total solar eclipse will happen Monday, April 8, 2024, and the Western New York region is one of the best places to experience it. Our region is in the path of totality – a narrow band of area across Earth where the moon briefly covers all but a thin disk of sunlight around its edges. The excitement begins at 2:07 p.m., when the moon begins to cover the sun. At 3:20 p.m., the total eclipse will begin and last for about three minutes. It is a spectacular moment to witness as day turns into night in a matter of seconds and the stars begin to shine.

The dark side of looking at the sun

The only safe way to view the event is with special solar viewing glasses. They are made with filters that block Ultraviolet – or UV – light. And it is best to plan to wear special viewing glasses for the entire event rather than risk any exposure.

UV sunlight can burn your eyes’ retinas in less than a minute or two. Even a partially concealed sun is unsafe to view with the naked eye. Even though daylight will begin to dim, the ultraviolet rays will still be just as strong. The same is true when it is cloudy or you’re wearing sunglasses or looking through your home’s or vehicle’s windows.

in their offices starting April 2. They are appropriate for adults and children. Limited supply is available and there is no cost.

You can also find places to purchase special eclipse viewing glasses by Googling The American Astronomical Society, a trusted organization, or see if your local library has them available, as the organization StarNet Libraries has distributed millions of the special viewing glasses to libraries around the U.S.

Precautions about other devices

If you are taking photos with your phone or camera, you still need to wear your viewing glasses. But there are certain devices that are unsafe to view the eclipse through even if you are wearing your viewing glasses: telescopes and binoculars. This is because such devices use magnifying lenses that will ruin the protective structure of the viewing glasses and damage your eyes anyway.

Watching out for kids

As for young children, remember to protect their eyes as well as your own. Providing them with viewing glasses can still be risky unless you control every second of your children’s behavior. So, the safest way for children to view an eclipse is indoors, on a television or computer screen, to be sure their eyes are never exposed to harmful rays. If your children are a bit older – teenagers – and want to experience the eclipse outdoors, just make sure they know to wear those special viewing

What to do about accidental exposure

Brockport native recognized as Navy and Marine Corps Force Health Protection Command Civilian of the Year

Bishop works for the Navy and Marine Corps Force Health Protection Command (NMCFHPC) in Portsmouth Regional Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia, as the Deputy Director of Laboratory Services and Deputy Navy Drug Testing Program Manager.

Bishop said he contributes to the NMCFHPC overall mission through program management and support for the Navy’s Drug Testing Program, primarily over both Navy Drug Screening Laboratories in Great Lakes, Illinois, and Jacksonville, Florida, as well as Directorate oversight for the Navy Bloodborne Infection Management Center and the Naval Dosimetry Center.

“I also provide support for the Office of Drug Demand Reduction, which provides oversight for each of the military branches drug testing programs,” he said. His efforts support numerous contracts such as laboratory reagents, consumable, maintenance support and scientific instrumentation procurement for the six Department of Defense (DOD) drug labs.

Bishop was awarded the Civilian Service Achievement Medal for his superior performance of his duties while serving as deputy director of Laboratory Services, NMCFHPC, Portsmouth, Virginia, from October 2022 to September 2023.

NMCFHPC develops and shapes public health for the U.S. Navy and Marines Corps through health surveillance, epidemiology and analysis, disease and injury prevention, and public health consultation.

“My organization’s overall mission is force health protection,” said Bishop. “Through laboratory services, I provide scientific guidance and oversight to four field activity units that are carrying out scientific analysis conducted to protect military members from infectious disease, illicit drugs, and exposure.”

Bishop is also a member of the command’s Biochemistry Toxicology Advisory Board.

Bishop started Government service as a civilian employee in 2022. “Prior to entering Government Service, I was a faculty member of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, Section on Molecular Medicine,” he said. Before entering academia, he completed his postdoctoral training at the Cleveland Clinic and Texas Biomedical Research Institute related to pulmonary injury due to chemical exposures.

“I was a lead on DoD-level projects in collaboration with other faculty at Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine, on a Health and Human Services, Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority sponsored project, studying chlorine gas exposure,” he said. “Following the end of this project, an opportunity came my way to apply for a government position that utilized many of the scientific and project management skills I had mastered over the past fifteen years.”

When asked about some of the important lines of efforts he supported during two years in Federal service, Bishop shared a time when there was an increased need for testing outside of the routine testing at one of the Navy drug labs. “This required the need for both contracting and logistical support, to include a whole new contract, while at the same time significantly increasing testing,” he said. “These challenges were overcome by implementing process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce unnecessary procedures burdening the laboratory.”

Another effort Bishop was involved in was getting more than 10 million dollars of scientific instrumentation to support of the life cycling of aging

instruments across all six drug labs. Bishop stated, “The major challenge was standing up two new contracts with two different vendors but also the logistics in delivering numerous systems to the laboratories as well as completing installation without impacting the laboratories daily production statistics.”

“What I have learned since starting Federal service is there are numerous jobs requiring a wide range of expertise you wouldn’t know could impact the military until you are exposed to the military culture and functions,” said Bishop.

“Applying the knowledge and expertise I’ve gained outside of the military over the last fifteen years strengthens my opinion that you can enter federal service to support the mission at any time of your career. You will continue to learn, and gain experience. And doing the tasks with a group that is driven towards the same goals is very rewarding.”

Extending the life of Easter plants

If you are celebrating Easter this weekend, you may have lovely spring plants decorating your home for the holiday. Many of the potted plants and bulbs sold in stores and garden centers for Easter can be planted outside later in the season or even kept in pots and forced for a second indoor bloom.

Penn State Extension says Easter lilies will bloom as an outdoor plant or can be forced again inside – although they are not as easy to force as other spring bulbs.

Display the plant indoors in a bright location away from direct sunlight and remove the flowers from the plant as soon as they die. After flowering, reduce watering. After the lily turns brown, cut it off at the soil line. It can be planted outside in May after the danger of frost has passed. The bulbs will be happy in a sunny, warm location, planted four to six inches deep in the soil. In the fall, after the ground freezes, mulch the area. In the spring, when new growth begins, remove the mulch, a bit at a time. If you want to try forcing it again inside, Penn State says you should remove the bulb from the container after the plant has turned brown. Store it in a cool, moist place, such as a basement. Repot in a six-inch container in fresh potting mix a few weeks before Christmas. Place in a cool, sunny window until it blooms.

back and plant them right in the garden. They bloom again in the fall and I use them for cut flowers. I treat them as an annual as they do not survive the winter cold, but the autumn flush of blooms is very pretty and welcome for late season bouquets.

Chrysanthemums sold as potted plants at Easter can be re-bloomed later in the season. The University of Missouri Extension recommends separating any plants potted together after blooming and repot in five- or six-inch pots. Water well and keep at temperatures around 60 degrees. When new shoots appear, move them to full sun and water well. In the summer, sink the pots into a sunny area outside where you can water and fertilize. Encourage bushy plants by pinching out the tip of each new shoot when it reaches about five inches long. Do not pinch the plants again after early July.

If you keep them in pots, bring the plants indoors when freezing weather threatens in the fall. Place in a sunny south window. Chrysanthemums need short days and long nights to flower. If keeping inside, keep them away from interior lights at night. Once flowering, light at night will not affect them.

Azaleas should be watered frequently when they are blooming and growing. Mist leaves to help prevent them from shedding, Penn State Extension says, and remove flowers as soon as they have faded. Keep your potted azalea pinched back and in a bright location out of direct sunlight until it is warm enough to place it outside. If you keep it potted and want to bring it back in during the fall, place it in a cool location – 45 to 50 degrees F, and reduce watering, until you see buds starting to swell. You need cool temperatures for bud development and light to prevent leaf drop until you see buds. After the buds start to open, move the plant to a bright, slightly warmer room and continue to water moderately, not allowing the potting mix to dry out.

Potted bulbs which have been forced into bloom, should be placed in a cool spot with temperatures at night are around 60 degrees F. Keep plants out of direct sun and moist, but not standing in water. Move bulbs to the garden for blooming next spring. Pick a sunny location and provide water while the leaves mature and dry. Remove dry foliage. You can plant the bulbs in the late spring, or store in a dry place until fall for planting at that time.
